RuPaul has on occasion performed as a man in a number of roles, usually billed as RuPaul Charles. RuPaul is noted among famous drag queens for his indifference towards the gender-specific pronouns used to address him—both “he” and “she” have been deemed acceptable. “You can call me he. You can call me she. You can call me Regis and Kathie Lee; I don’t care! 13. Jim Nabors – “It Takes All Kinds To Make The World Go Round”
from: Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. / Sony / 1965
[Jan. 29, 2013, Hawaii News Now reported that Jim Nabors married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, at Seattle, Washington’s Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Jan. 15, a month after same-sex marriage became legal in Washington. An urban legend maintains that Nabors married Rock Hudson in the early ’70s, shortly before Nabors began his relationship with Cadwallader. At least publicly, the two were never more than friends. According to Hudson, the legend originated with a group of “middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach” who sent out joke invitations for their annual get-together. One year, the group invited its members to witness “the marriage of Rock Hudson & Jim Nabors,” at which Hudson would take the surname of Nabors’ most famous character, Gomer Pyle, becoming “Rock Pyle.” Those who failed to get the joke spread the rumor. Hudson was also gay but closeted, and because of the fear that one or both of them might be outed, Nabors & Hudson never spoke to each other again.]

14. Paul Lynde, Maureen Stapleton, Dick Van Dyke, Bryan Russell -“Kids”
from: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to Bye Bye Birdy / RCA-BMG / 1960 [Paul Lynde’s sexual orientation was an open secret in Hollywood, although, in keeping with the prejudices of the time, it was not acknowledged or discussed in public. In a 2013 radio interview, Dick Van Dyke recalled the wrap party for Bye Bye Birdie. A series of men gave short speeches, each one praising Ann-Margret and predicting success and stardom for the young actress. When it was Paul Lynde’s turn to speak, he began, “Well, I guess I’m the only one here who doesn’t want to fuck Ann-Margret.” In 1965, Lynde was involved in an accident in which a young actor, reputed to be his lover, fell to his death from the window of their hotel room in San Francisco’s Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The two had been drinking for hours before 24-year-old James “Bing” Davidson slipped and fell eight stories, an event witnessed by two policemen, yet the event was largely kept out of the press, thus saving Lynde’s career. Despite his campy television persona, Lynde never publicly came out as gay and the press generally refrained from commenting about it. In 1976, a People magazine article on Lynde featured him and Stan Finesmith; the latter was dubbed Lynde’s “suite mate” and “chauffeur-bodyguard.” In the 1970s, this was as close as the press would come to hinting at his sexuality.]

The band performed “TVC 15”, “The Man Who Sold the World”, and “Boys Keep Swinging”. During the performance of “TVC 15”, Nomi and Arias dragged around a large prop pink poodle with a television screen in its mouth. Nomi was so impressed with the plastic quasi-tuxedo suit that Bowie wore during “The Man Who Sold the World” that he commissioned one to be made for himself. Nomi can be seen wearing the suit on the cover of his self-titled album, as well as during a number of his music videos. Nomi wore his variant of the outfit, in monochromatic black-and-white with spandex and makeup to match, until the last few months of his life. 11:30 – Tribute to Larry Kramer.

If you believe theatre can change the world, it may be because you know of Larry Kramer.

American playwright, author, public health advocate, and LGBT rights activist, Larry Kramer was born June 25, 1935. He began his career rewriting scripts for Columbia Pictures, which led him to London where he worked with United Artists and earned an Academy Award nomination for the screenplay of “Women in Love” in 1969.

In 1980 and 1981 Larry Kramer began to witness many his friends becoming sick and dying from the spread of an unknown disease, that became known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). He co-founded the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, which has become the largest private organization to assist people living with AIDS in the world.

Larry Kramer co-founded the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) in 1987, a direct action, multi-faceted, protest organization credited with changing public health policy and perception of people living with AIDS, HIV and AIDS-related diseases.

Based on his own struggles, in the early years of the AIDS crisis, Larry Kramer wrote about his frustrations with our government’s lethargic response, to do anything to help. Larry Kramer was also frustrated by the gay community itself, criticizing gay men who he felt were in denial of what was killing them. From all of this came Larry Kramer’s nearly auto-biographical play, “The Normal Heart” that focused on the rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City between 1981 and 1984, as seen through the eyes of writer/activist Ned Weeks, a gay Jewish-American founder of a prominent HIV advocacy group. Ned was known and disliked for his loud, angry, public confrontations, in contrast to the calmer, more private strategies favored by his associates, friends, and closeted lover Felix Turner.

The Normal Heart was produced by Joesph Papp at The Public Theater in NYC in 1985, in a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run that starred Brad Davis in the role of Ned Weeks.

In Kansas City, no professional theatre would do this show. The Normal Heart was produced independently in the Summer of 1991, as the very first production of Actors & Artists Against AIDS, Directed by John McCrite, staged with a cast of professional actors, in the basement of Unity Temple on The Plaza, the production earned critical acclaim and $10,000.00 in ticket sales from 8 performances, all to benefit The Good Samaritan Project.

Later, the play was revived in Los Angeles and London and again Off-Broadway in 2004. The Normal Heart made it’s Broadway debut, in April 2011, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. This year The Normal Heart premiered as a feature film on HBO with Julia Roberts, Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer and Mark Ruffalo as Ned Weeks. The film of THE NORMAL HEART was directed and produced by Ryan Murphy, best known for creating the TV shows GLEE, The New Normal, and American Horror Story. Larry Kramer wrote the screenplay.

from: Purple Heart / Significant Other / 1988
[In partnership with Oscar winner Peter Allen and Marsha Melamet, Michael Callen wrote his most famous song, “Love Don’t Need a Reason”, which he sang frequently at gay pride and AIDS-related events around the country. Michael Callen (b. April 11, 1955) was a singer, songwriter, composer, author, and AIDS activist. He was a significant architect of the response to the AIDS crisis in the United States. First diagnosed with “Gay related immune deficiency” (GRID) in 1982, Callen quickly became a leader in the response to the epidemic. He was a founding member of the People With AIDS Self-Empowerment Movement among other organizations, and he testified before the President’s Commission on AIDS and both houses of the United States Congress. He was a founding member of the gay male a cappella singing group The Flirtations, with whom he recorded two albums. He also had a solo album, Purple Heart, which a review in The Advocate called “the most remarkable gay independent release of the past decade.” During the last year of his life, Callen recorded over 40 songs. Chambers is a 4 piece band with: Piper Johnson – Synths, Lead vocals, backing vocals; Chase Johnson – drums, samples, Backing vocals; Daniel Pelletier – Bass, backing vocals.

Early the band members realized that they had strong but very different voices and instead of trying to conform their different styles to each other, made it into their strength. What has come out of this process is a collection of songs that features 3 different singers, complex arrangements of harmonies, and a variety of instruments and styles.

Judson said in an interview that making “Inner room” “taught us to respect each other and ourselves as creators.”

In just under two years the band has already played with: Grimes, Cold War kids, Efterklang, Chelsea Wolfe, Tennis, Torres, Frontier Ruckus, and toured with Seryn.

They call their music: neanderthal punk noise rock sludge from Kansas City. The band BUMMER, is Matt Perrin who sings and plays guitar, Mike Gustafson who plays bass, and Thomas Williams on drums. Bummer plays The Riot Room, Friday May 30, 8:00 pm with The Runaway Sons, The Sluts, and Scruffy & the Janitors. Bummer digitally released their EP – MILK, on October 23, 2013. The band will be releasing a physical CD release of MILK on Friday, May 30.

The duo of Perrin, and drummer Thomas Williams first came together under the name Vestibule. When Williams left the band in summer 2012, bassist Mike Gustafson and Perrin found another drummer, Sam Hunter, and formed Bummer. In April, 2013, they released “Young Ben Franklin,” a three-song EP. In July, Hunter left the band and Thomas Williams came back on board. In October, they released “Milk,” a four-song EP

Bummer’s influences are in hard rock. Heavy. Raw.

Members of Bummer told Tim Finn in an Ink Magazine article from February 18, 2014, about their influences.

Mike Gustafson, 21, likes Queens of the Stone Age. “I love stuff that’s heavy & dark,” he said. “I like pop-song structures, stuff that gets stuck in your head. But it has to be heavy.”

Matt Perrin, 19, admits he had a Nirvana/Kurt Cobain dependency as a young teen but has since moved on to bands like the Melvins, Unsane, Young Widows and Pissed Jeans. “Those were all turning points,” he said. “It’s all really raw, aggressive stuff.”

Thomas Williams said initially he was more of a pop-punk fan. “I was the odd one,” he said. “I was more into Blink 182 and My Chemical Romance. But once I started hanging out with these guys, it became more Nirvana and Foo Fighters.”

1. Phil Neal & the Wornalls – “I’ll Be There”
from: Lonely Tonight / Phil Neal / December 15, 2012
[Veteran singer songwriter, and rock and roller, Phil Neal’s early eighties band, The Artists, had a video in rotation on MTV, critical acclaim, and national management. When the band fell apart, Phil continued on, writing songs, and playing for over three decades, with several different bands, all while raising a family, and making a home, here in Kansas City. The songwriter has written dozens, of what he calls “Midwestern Rock” numbers. The Wornalls are the band Phil wanted, to bring his songs to life. Doug Gunn on drums, Danko Loftus on bass, Gary Paredes on guitar, Ben Eisiminger on keyboard, and Bruce Sidener on guitar, they are more than a band to Phil, they’re old friends.]

2. Billy Joe Shaver – “If The Trailer’s Rockin’ Don’t Come Knockin’”
from: The Real Deal / Compadre / September 20, 2004
[18th release of 22 from Billy Joe Shaver, born August 16, 1939, in Corsicana, Texas. He is a Texas country music singer and songwriter. Shaver’s 1973 album “Old Five and Dimers Like Me” is a classic in the outlaw country genre. Upon his discharge, from the Navy he worked a series of dead-end jobs, including trying to be a rodeo cowboy. About this time, Shaver met and married Brenda Joyce Tindell. They had one son, John Edwin, known as Eddy, who was born in 1962. The two divorced and remarried several times. Shaver took a job at a lumber mill to make ends meet. One day his right hand (his dominant hand) became caught in the machinery, and he lost the better part of two fingers and contracted a serious infection. He eventually recovered, and taught himself to play the guitar without those missing fingers. Shaver set out to hitchhike to LA and ended up just outside of Memphis, Tennessee. and then Nashville, where he found a job as a songwriter for $50 a week. His work came to the attention of Waylon Jennings, who filled most of his album Honky Tonk Heroes with Shaver’s songs. Other artists, including Elvis Presley and Kris Kristofferson, began to record Shaver’s music. This led to his own record deal. After losing his wife, Brenda, and his mother to cancer in 1999, Shaver lost his son and longtime guitarist Eddy, who died at age 38 of a heroin overdose on December 31, 2000. Shaver nearly died himself the following year when he had a heart attack on stage during an Independence Day show in Texas. After successful heart surgery, Shaver came back to release Freedom’s Child in 2002. In 1999, Shaver performed at the Grand Ole Opry. In November 2005, he performed on the CMT Outlaws 2005. In 2006, Shaver was inducted in the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. He recently served as spiritual advisor to Texas independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman. For his efforts, the Americana Music Convention awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting. He currently lives in Waco, Texas. Bob Dylan mentioned Shaver in his song “I Feel a Change Comin’ On” (Bob Dylan and Robert Hunter) on the album, Together Through Life (2009) – “I’m listening to Billy Joe Shaver, And I’m reading James Joyce”. Police in Lorena, Texas, issued arrest warrants for Shaver April 2, 2007 on charges of aggravated assault and possessing a firearm in a prohibited place. This was in connection with an incident outside a tavern, Papa Joe’s Texas Saloon in Lorena on March 31, 2007, in which Shaver shot a man, Billy Bryant Coker, in the face with a handgun. Coker’s injuries were reported as not life-threatening. Witnesses interviewed by police report hearing Shaver saying “where do you want it?” and then, after the shot was fired, “Tell me you are sorry” and “No one tells me to shut up.” Coker told police the attack was unprovoked. Shaver’s attorney declared that Shaver had shot Coker “in self-defense” after Coker threatened Shaver with a knife. After unsuccessfully attempting to surrender to police in Austin, TX, who were unaware of the warrant, Shaver turned himself in at McLennan County Jail in Waco, TX on Tuesday, April 3. He was released after an hour on $50,000 bond and gave his scheduled performance at Waterloo Records in Austin that evening, where he reportedly told fans, “Don’t forget to pray for me, and tell your kids to pray for me, too.” He was acquitted in a Waco court on April 9, 2010 after testifying that he acted in self-defense. The Texas based country musician, Dale Watson, wrote a song about the incident titled “Where Do You Want It?” The song has been recorded by Whitey Morgan and the 78’s and appears on their second album, Whitey Morgan and the 78’s, on Bloodshot Records.]

10:15 – Interview with Valarie Vogel

On June 11, 2001, the Jackson County Sheriff arrested Bryon Case and charged him with the murder of Anastasia WitbolsFeugen, who had been found dead, three years earlier, on October 22, 1997. Byron Case was convicted by jury trial, on May 2, 2002 of Murder in the First Degree and of Armed Criminal Action. He received a sentence of Life in Prison Without Chance of Parole. He exhausted his last appeal in 2010, when the Supreme Court of the United States denied his petition to consider his habeas corpus appeal. Through the trials and 13 years in prison, Byron and his family, have maintained his innocence.

Valarie Vogel is originally from Pittsburgh, PA. She currently lives in LA, and works as a police dispatcher in Southern California. Valarie learned about Byron Case through a friend and began doing research in Byron Case’s Murder trial. Valarie joined us to share information about Byron’s first book, THE PARIAH’S SYNTAX, Notes From An Innocent Man, published by Red Bat Books.

Much of the case rested on the testimony of Byron Case’s ex-girlfriend Kelly Moffett who had started dating the 18 year old Case when she was still in Middle School and 14 years of age. Kelly changed her story from what she reported to the investigating Sheriff immediately after the Anastasia was found dead. Kelly ended up testifying against Byron. She received immunity for her testimony.

Byron Case the writer. Byron’s work has appeared in magazines and literary journals as well as best selling anthologies, Requiem for a Paper Bag (Fireside, 2009) and The Moment (Harper Perennial, 2012).

5. The Lucky – “Gay Night (for the Straight Kids)”
from: Swimming Invisible / Independent / May 24, 2014
[Recorded at Massive Sound Studio by Paul Malinowski]

10:35 – Interview with Camilla Camille, Iason Mac Ai

The Kansas City based rock and roll band, The Lucky celebrates the release of their furst full length release, Swimming Invisible, with release party and show, Friday, May 23 at 9:00pm, at the recordBar, 1020 Westport Rd, Kansas City, Missouri, with NowHere, and Sextonic Plates. Joining us in the studio are two of the four members of The Lucky, Camilla Camille, and Iason Mac Ai.

Igniting a post-punk-riot explosion, The Lucky combines the intellect, sensuality, and fire-and-powder energy of Camilla Camille and Iason Mac Ai. Together they create dirty garage rock with a literary edge and a beat you can dance to.

Camille and Iason became fast friends over coffee and guitar riffs in the summer of 2011. In the heat of their collaboration, new songs took shape and old songs were reborn.

Sharing vocals, they mixed a punk and riot girl recipe for rock-n-roll. They named the band The Lucky, added a drummer and began performing shows in June 2012.

The Lucky recorded with Paul Malinowski at Massive Sound Studio and released a four-song demo in February 2013.

After going through a Spinal Tap-like procession of drummers, Dustin Mott joined the band with bassist Calandra Rene in July 2013. Camille, who previously played guitar, switched solely to vocals, adding her enthusiastic choreography to the live show.

Camille is sometimes sweet, like Kathleen Hannah, and other times primal, like Donita Sparks. Iason is reminiscent of Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, while his guitar solos weave a haunting melody of divine frosting.

Drawing on musical influences throughout the history of rock-n-roll as well as literary idols such as Lord Byron and Emily Dickinson, The Lucky forges a powerful post-punk-riot fusion that begs to be turned up a little louder.

Camilla Camille on vocals, guitar, octave pedal; Iason Mac Ai on vocals, lead guitar; Calandra Rene on bass; Dustin Mott on drums.
