Their sound has been described as “earnest folk-influenced indie rock with touches of noise and dream pop”. Wasner sings lead vocals and plays electric or acoustic guitar, while Stack plays both drums and keyboards, playing the drums with his feet and right hand, and the bass line with his left hand. The band was formed as Monarch in mid-2006, before changing their name to Wye Oak, a reference to the former state tree of their home state of Maryland. 4. Glynis Johns & Harold Hastings – “Send In the Clowns”
from: The Best of Broadway: The American Musical (Remastered) / UMG / October 5, 2004
[Original 1973 Recording. “Send in the Clowns” is a song written by Stephen Sondheim for the 1973 musical A Little Night Music. Sondheim wrote the song specifically for the actress Glynis Johns, who created the role of Desirée on Broadway. The song is structured with four verses and a bridge, and uses a complex compound meter. It became Sondheim’s most popular song after Frank Sinatra recorded it in 1973 and Judy Collins’ version charted in 1975 and 1977. Subsequently, Sarah Vaughan, Judi Dench, Grace Jones, Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Zarah Leander, Tiger Lillies, Ray Conniff, Glenn Close, Cher and many other artists recorded the song and it became a jazz standard.]

10:35 – Interview with Andy Parkhurst and Lauren Braton

Spinning Tree Theatre’s production of “A Little Night Music” just opened to critical acclaim and is up and running through May 24, at the Off Center Theatre, in Crown Center, 2450 Grand, Kansas City, MO. Set in 1900 Sweden and inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film “Smiles of a Summer Night.” The “Send in the Clowns” musical, was the winner of the 1973 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical. Joining us in our 90.1 FM studios are: Lauren Braton (Countess Charlotte Malcolm in A Little Night Music) and Andy Parkhurst (Choreographer, Producer, Managing Director).

Lauren’s voice was featured on the show, last year Mark Titus was our guest and he shared a recording of lauren singing – “Holding To The Ground from (Falsettoland)” from: Take The Stage / The Unicorn Theatre 40th Anniversary Gala / August 11, 2013.

Lauren Braton plays Countess Charlotte Malcolm. This is her Spinning Tree: Debut. Her local credits: Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Coterie Theatre, Starlight Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, Unicorn Theatre, Quality Hill Playhouse, Musical Theater Heritage, Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre and Kansas City Civic Opera. Regional: Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, Seagle Music Colony New York. She also stays busy with commercial and film work, and teaches private voice at Kansas City Young Audiences. Up next: Jazz in the Woods at Corporate Woods in June. http://www.laurenbraton.com

From Pitch review: “Lauren Braton is exceptional as the caustic Charlotte, who relies on wry humor to mask her wounds. Braton has some of the show’s sharpest comic timing, but she’s also a rich mezzo whose range powers the stirring “Every Day a Little Death.” Vigthor Zophoniasson is imposing as Count Malcolm, and Liz Golson lends her strong voice and keen edge to Petra, a maid who attempts to seduce Fredrik’s brooding son, Henrik (played by Daniel Beeman).”

Cast: Melinda MacDonald, Charles Fugate, Lauren Braton, Molly Denninghoff, Liz Clark Golson, Cathy Wood, and Vigthor Zophoniasson.

From Pitch review: “Director Michael Grayman elevates a formidable cast to new heights with a few smart adjustments, such as shaving the five-person chorus to four. It’s the right call for this space, where subtlety and intimacy help emotions cut deep. And each performer makes a sizable impression.”

From Pitch review: “Melinda MacDonald portrays the aging Desiree with confidence, and her husky lower register has a resonance in which we can splash around. Her talent is on full display in an expressive “Send in the Clowns,” a cabaret mainstay that she makes her own.”

The orchestra, is directed by Angie Benson. Kaytee Dietrich and Andy Johnson, on reeds and French horn.

It consists of singer Yukimi Nagano (vocals, percussion) and her close high school friends Erik Bodin (drums), Fredrik Källgren Wallin (bass) and Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards). The band’s name was inspired by the “Little Dragon” nickname Nagano earned due to the “fuming tantrums” she used to throw while recording in the studio. “It’s a little exaggerated but there is some truth in it”, Nagano said. “But we’ve grown up a bit and I realised you can’t have a fit every day because otherwise you won’t be able to stand each other.”]

12. Marva Whitney – “Daddy Don’t Know About Sugar Bear” (Vinyl)
from: 45 / Forte / 1972
[Included in Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label / Numero Group – Cleanteen Records / Sept. 3, 2013. Born Marva Ann Manning, May 1, 1944 in Kansas City, Kansas. Whitney’s performing career started as early as three years old while touring with her family’s gospel group, the Manning Gospel Singers. In 1960, when she was 16, she joined a Kansas gospel group, the Alma Whitney Singers, and ended up marrying Harry Whitney, the brother-in-law of the group’s leader. Ever since, she has gone by her married name, Marva Whitney. Marva Whitney is well known as a funk vocalist. Singing with James Brown in the late 1960s, she was able to make a name for herself with powerful songs like “I’m Tired, I’m Tired, I’m Tired (Things Better Change Before Its Too Late)” and “If You Don’t Work (You Can’t Eat).” Her recording of “It’s My Thing (You Can’t Tell Me Who to Sock It To)” reached the R&B Top 20. Her song “Unwind Yourself” has been sampled numerous times, most recognisably by DJ Mark the 45 King on his 1987 track “The 900 Number”, which was then sampled by DJ Chad Jackson on his 1990 hit single “Hear the Drummer (Get Wicked)” (UK #3 in July 1990), by DJ Kool on his 1996 hit “Let Me Clear My Throat” (UK #6 in March 1997), Sway on his 2009 track Mercedes Benz and Mac Miller on his 2011 track Party On Fifth Ave. In 2006, Marva Whitney collaborated with German born DJ/collector/manager DJ Pari and Japanese funk orchestra Osaka Monaurail to produce a new single, “I Am What I Am”. Osaka Monaurail style themselves on the James Brown sound and the single was produced in the fashion of an authentic release of the recordings she produced with Brown in 1969. Two successful tours of Japan and a full length album release followed, also entitled “I Am What I Am”. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, the tour was also brought to Europe. In December 2009, Whitney collapsed on stage in front of thousands of fans in Lorne, Australia, while performing with The Transatlantics at Falls Festival. She was immediately rushed to Geelong Hospital, where doctors diagnosed a stroke. The remaining dates of her tour had to be canceled, but Whitney made a recovery and performed again in 2010. In December 2012, Whitney died from complications of pneumonia at her home. She was 68.]

14. PRETTY – “Mustache In Your Face” (Vinyl)
from: 7″ / Independent / 1969/1970
(never officially released until Numero reissued it in 2013)
[The Numero Group’s 700 series kicks off with three ferociously rockin’ double seven-inch dispatches from the American Midwest. Hailing from Kansas City, Pretty were more famously known as the Fabulous Four, a local beat combo that ground their way through the K.C. club scene from 1959 to 1976. In 1969, they buried themselves in a hole in a Missouri hillside, known as the Cavern Recording Studio, alongside Electric Prunes drummer Michael “Quint” Weakley. Together, they churned out eight tracks as Pretty — earthy, grooving hard rock pushed to the hilt with stuttering, psychedelic Wurlitzer work and some supremely heeeeeavy fuzzed-out electric guitar riffs. The title track, “Mustache in Your Face,” is the pick of this litter, featuring hilariously incongruous lyrics about “a girl/yeah yeah,” “the devil and the monkeys are comin’ upstairs,” and “what a lie, what a lie/mustache in your face.” Don’t bother trying to parse out the sentiments, just keep these psychedelic scorchers on rotation; all the b-sides are killers in their own rights. -Michael Stasiak (January 25, 2013) Bob Theen told Garage Hangover: “To my knowledge the record was not distributed at all. After the sessions, Weekly took off for California to try and sell them to someone. Don’t think he had any luck, and we didn’t see much of him after that.” On March 22, 2008, The Fabulous Four Band (Bob Theen – Jeff Mann – Mike Myers – Mark Higbee & original drummer Alex Love) was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall Of Fame.]

15. Dirty Projectors – “Two Doves”
from: Bitte Orca / Domino / 2009
[7th release from Brooklyn-based, experimental band, released June 9. The word “bitte” is a German word for “please,” and “orca” is another name for a killer whale. This was one of our 100 best recordings of 2009]

16. Dead Rider – “Blank Screen”
from: Chills On Glass / Drag City / 2014
[Dead Rider, formerly known as D. Rider, is an experimental rock band from Chicago, formed by 2009. It features: Todd Rittman (guitar, lead vocals), Noah Tabakin (saxophone), Andrea Faught (keyboard, trumpet), Matt Espy (drums) – who replaced former member Theo Katsaounis (drums) in 2010.]

17. Mr. Bungle – “The Air-Conditioned Nightmare”
from: California / Warner Brothers / July 2, 1999
[Experimental band from Eureka, California. The band was formed in 1985 while the members were still in high school, and was named after a children’s educational film regarding bad habits which was featured in a Pee-wee Herman HBO special in the early ’80s. Mr. Bungle released four demo tapes in the mid to late 1980s before being signed to Warner Bros. Records and releasing three full-length studio albums between 1991 and 1999. The band toured in 2000 to support their last album but in 2004 they disbanded. Although Mr. Bungle went through several line up changes early in their career, the longest-serving members were vocalist Mike Patton, guitarist Trey Spruance, bassist Trevor Dunn, saxophonist Clinton “Bär” McKinnon and drummer Danny Heifetz. Mr. Bungle was known for its distinctive musical traits, often cycling through several musical genres within the course of a single song. Many of its songs had an unconventional structure and utilized a wide array of instruments and samples. Live shows often featured members dressing up and an array of cover songs. An ongoing feud with Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis escalated in the late 1990s, with Kiedis removing Mr. Bungle from a number of large music festivals in Europe.]

I had been producing and hosting a public affairs program called The Tenth Voice, since 2001. There was a lot of music we wanted to play. Very quickly Wednesday MidDay Medley established itself as a place to hear new and local releases.

Marion Merritt joined us for the entire show, as our special guest co-host. Marion made her first appearance on WMM on July 29, 2004. Marion has been a regular contributor, sharing her musical discoveries and info from her encyclopedic brain. For 18 years Marion was the manager of the music department at Barnes & Noble on The Plaza, until she left in January to start her own independent record store, specializing in vinyl. 7. PedalJets – “Burgandy”
from: What’s In Between / Oxblood Records / November 2007
[When asked to contribute a track for the Oxblood Records compilation “First Blood,” members of the band began tinkering with tracks from their their 1989 second release, a CD that came out just before the band broke up. Inspired by the results of the re-working of “Burgandy” the band started looking at the entire record. With parts re-recorded, the entire recording was redone, remastered, remixed, the band re-released their second record again, as a do-over. Original members Mike Allmayer, Mat Kesler, Rob Morrow, and Phil Wade reunited to perform together for the first time in 17 years at The Brick, December 21, 2007, to perform the songs. 9. The Brian Jonestown Massacre – “Who?”
from: Tepid Peppermint Wonderland: A Retrospective / a Records / November 2, 2004
[The band began as a shoe gazing group in San Francisco in 1988. After their debut and sophomore albums, the group quickly turned to a broader style of psychedelic rock incorporating folk, blues, raga, and later, electronica influences. The name “Brian Jonestown Massacre” is a portmanteau of The Rolling Stones’ founder and guitarist Brian Jones and the infamous mass cult suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. They have gained media notoriety for their tumultuous working relationships and the drug addiction of their leader, Anton Newcombe. Originally released on “Take It from the Man!” from 1996 their third album. It was the first of three critically acclaimed albums, preceding Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request and Thank God for Mental Illness. It was another change of style for the band, with a large influence being 1960s garage rock, particularly the early work of The Rolling Stones.]

14. Fela Ransome Kuti –“Open & Close”
from: Open & Close / Independent / Originally released January 1, 1971
[Review by John Dougan: Another long-thought-lost gem from the Fela Anikulapo Kuti archives, Open & Close was originally released in 1971 and, in the manner of He Miss Road and Fela’s London Scene, is a total groove-fest loaded to the gills with raucous horn blowing, ferocious percussion (once again, Tony Allen take a bow), and song lengths over ten minutes. By this point, Fela could do no wrong when it came to recording; Afro-beat dissenters will claim that there is a trance-inducing similarity to much of Fela’s ’70s recorded output, that the grooves aren’t enough to make the songs distinctive enough on their own. That’s true of some of his later recordings (like in the mid- to late ’80s), but at this point he was still breathing fire and the band was in top form. Perhaps the distinguishing factors of records like Open & Close and some of Fela’s other ’70s releases are that as much as he liked to ride a groove, he also liked to disrupt it, twist it and turn it, reshape it, only to bring it back to its original shape. There was less of that later in his career.]

18. Sister Gertrude Morgan – “Let Us Make A Record”
from: Lets Make A Record / Ropeadope / June 27, 2004
[Sister Gertrude Morgan (1900-1980) was a preacher, missionary, artist, musician, and poet who worked in New Orleans in the 1960s and ’70s, notable primarily for her folk art. She was born in 1900 in Lafayette, Alabama, and moved to Columbus, Georgia at the age of eighteen. She was married to Will Morgan in 1928, but at the age of 38 thought she heard a voice from God telling her to become a street evangelist. She left her family and husband to move to New Orleans, where she organized an orphanage with two other missionaries. She believed God told her to begin painting in 1956, and in 1957 thought she heard a voice telling her that she was the Bride of Christ. Thus she adopted a white habit and moved out of the orphanage to establish “The Everlasting Gospel Mission” in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Music was one of the tools of her ministry, and in the early 1970s, Let’s Make A Record was recorded in order to capture Morgan singing and playing her tambourine. She painted in order to create visual aids for her preaching, and her paintings use a colorful religious iconography. Some of her favorite subjects are the Book of Revelation and her and Jesus flying in an airplane, this last accompanied by the poem “Jesus is my air Plane.” She painted on whatever was at hand, including styrofoam trays, window shades and even toilet paper rolls. Her art brought her fame and notoriety, and in 1974 she announced that the Lord had ordered her to cease painting in order to concentrate on her preaching and poetry. She died in 1980. In 2005, the New Orleans Museum of Art presented the first comprehensive collection of her art. Also in 2005, the Ropeadope label released King Britt presents Sister Gertrude Morgan, which took the a cappella/tambourine recordings of Let’s Make A Record and added contemporary beat programming and instrumentation. The album received rave reviews and created a new, young audience for Sister Gertrude Morgan. The album artwork featured her paintings.]

20. Nina Simone -“I Can’t See Nobody (Daniel Y. Remix)”
from: Remixed & Reimagined / BMG / October 31, 2006
[The first album in the Legacy Remixed series released by Sony BMG. This is a collection of songs by Nina Simone, remixed by several club DJ’s. All original songs come from her albums released by RCA records. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon; February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003) was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist widely associated with jazz music. Simone aspired to become a classical pianist while working in a broad range of styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Born the sixth child of a preacher’s family in North Carolina, Simone aspired to be a concert pianist. Her musical path changed direction after she was denied a scholarship to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, despite a well-received audition. Simone was later told by someone working at Curtis that she was rejected because she was black. When she began playing in a small club in Philadelphia to fund her continuing musical education and become a classical pianist she was required to sing as well. She was approached for a recording by Bethlehem Records, and her rendering of “I Loves You, Porgy” was a hit in the United States in 1958. Over the length of her career Simone recorded more than 40 albums, mostly between 1958—when she made her debut with Little Girl Blue—and 1974. Her musical style arose from a fusion of gospel and pop songs with classical music, in particular with influences from her first inspiration, Johann Sebastian Bach, and accompanied with her expressive jazz-like singing in her characteristic contralto. She injected as much of her classical background into her music as possible to give it more depth and quality, as she felt that pop music was inferior to classical. Her intuitive grasp on the audience–performer relationship was gained from a unique background of playing piano accompaniment for church revivals and sermons regularly from the early age of six years old. In the early 1960s, she became involved in the civil rights movement and the direction of her life shifted once again. Simone’s music was highly influential in the fight for equal rights in the United States. In later years, she lived abroad, finally settling in France in 1992. She received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2000 and was a fifteen-time Grammy Award nominee over the course of her career.]

For her new record, Kristie reunited with Kansas City based guitar hero – Chris Meck, who played on her 2001, debut solo release, “All I Really Want.” Kristie has called Chris her sidekick and friend, but the two hadn’t played together in over 10 years.

Chris went on to form The Gaslights with Abigail Henderson. Chris is currently performing as Chris Meck and The Guilty Birds.

In the KC Star piece about you Tim Finn interviewed famed musician and producer Lou Whitney who in 2001 produced Kristie Stremel’s first solo full-length, “All I Really Want,” for Slewfoot Records. You said that Lou Whitney was… “my mentor, a father figure,”

In the KC Star piece Lou Whitney said, “…when he saw she you were coming to play a gig in Springfield, (he) went over to watch.” What he saw and heard, he said, was raw but promising.

“I thought she had all the ingredients,” he said. “The songs were poppy efforts to write songs that might actually do something. She was writing personal stuff but couching it in this rock-pop way.”

Kristie has always written about the personal stuff, love, the heart, desire, family.

“Well Alright” is one of the songs about Kristie and her partner Lori Isabell.

“Oh, you are a stubborn girl, wrapped up in a corporate world / And I’m an indie child, with a streak of wild / They gave us looks and they had their doubts / We were set to figure it out / I said ‘We’re different songs,’ you said, ‘Won’t it be fun?’ / Well, alright.”

Rocker mom Kristie Stremel joined us to talk about her new record, Songwriter, on Kristie’s own label Stremeltone.

Kristie Stremel, with her partner Lori Isabell, welcomed adopted baby son, Charlie, into their family 6 months ago.

Kristie told Tim Finn in the KC Star Article published last week, “The weight of bringing a new, little creature home was a little overwhelming at first,” she said. “But it has been everything I wanted it to be. I’ve always wanted to have a child. Sometimes, desire is all it takes. If you desire it, it will come to you.”

“I’ve met a lot of musicians, mostly guys, who had to quit music because they started families,” she said. “I could kind of get that in my head, but I couldn’t understand why they had to quit completely when they were so good at it.

“I have a different perspective now that I have a kid, and maybe it will change. But I can’t see giving up music for anything.”

[Quotes from KC Star article written by Tim Finn, April 24, 2014]

Stremeltone Records, with studios created in Kristie’s own home in Lawrence, give this is the flexibility to work from home, and are also part of the musical evolution where musicians are their own agents, producers, labels, marketing, tour managers. Being a 21st century musician requires multiple skills in addition to writing and playing.

The new century also brings huge changes in how our society defines family. You have been an out and proud open lesbian rock and roller from the very beginning. Kristie has done countless benefits for LGBT charities and The LikeMe Lighthouse. Her generation has forged new equality for same-sex marriage, recognized now in 17 states.

The last track on “It’s Enough” was released early, as a video, featuring photos of couples in partnerships, relationships, marriages, unions, families. The video was Kristie’s response the the Kansas House of Representatives passing HD 2453 allowing business the right to refuse service to LGBT customers. The bill eventually died in the Kansas Senate.

11:19 – Interview with Nick Carswell & Don Simon

Nick Carswell is a busy guy. He is a founding member of the Lawrence based band Carswell & Hope, Silly Goose Records, and InterUrban ArtHouse joins us to discuss Silly Goose Records MXM2014 Mix/Master, Saturday, May 3, 2014 at The Bottleneck, 737 New Hampshire St. A day of music workshops, panel discussion and info sessions, followed by a live showcase concert featuring: The Phantastics, Sunu, Pink Royal, Carswell & Hope, Forrester, F.A.I.T.H. Carswell & Hope play the recordBar, tonight, April 30, with Wells The Traveler, and Kasey Rausch.

Also joining us was Don Simon of Kansas City Volunteer Lawyers & Accountants for the Arts.

Silly Goose Records (SGR) was originally founded in Ireland in 2010, by Irish musician and songwriter Nick Carswell. The label released several records and supported bands, coordinating national tours, media and television appearances and PR campaigns.

Carswell relocated to Kansas in 2011 and began working with local musicians through the Barrel House piano bar in downtown Lawrence. In January 2013, Silly Goose Records was re-imagined as an independent collective, where artists could collaborate and come together to share experience and resources. Within their first year, bands in the collective have released several EPs, produced and recorded online videos, recorded full-length albums and incorporated as LLCs. More info at http://www.sillygooserecords.org

Nick works for the not-for-profit organization: InterUrban ArtHouse.

On Saturday May 3rd, 2014 local independent music collective Silly Goose Records will present a day of music workshops, panel discussion and info sessions, followed by a live showcase concert at The Bottleneck , 737 New Hampshire St. The event, named MXM2014.

Mix/Master is an opportunity for local musicians, bands and songwriters to connect with industry experts, pick up useful tips to help advance their careers, and to support and celebrate the local music scene. The program is presented in partnership with regional arts non-profits Midwest Music Foundation, Kansas City Volunteer Lawyers & Accountants for the Arts and InterUrban ArtHouse.

The event is sponsored by Ingredient Restaurants, Five Bar & Tables, KJHK 90.7, Ink Magazine and Mass Street Music and is supported by a Community Arts Grant from the Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission.

Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission awards funding to new locally-organized music industry event Silly Goose Records MXM2014 Mix/Master

The day program (from 12 noon to 5pm) will include a presentation on the legal aspects of the music industry, from contracts and copyright, to publishing and revenue streams.

Panelists from the industry will then discuss independent radio, booking, promotions and management, and there will be an opportunity for new bands to get direct feedback on their music in the Demo Dip panel, where their demo may be critiqued live!

At 7:00 pm, the Bottleneck gets back to what it does best with a live music showcase from the artists involved in the Silly Goose collective: The Phantastics, Sunu, Pink Royal, Carswell & Hope , Forrester , F.A.I.T.H. These are just a selection of some of the best talent Lawrence has to offer, to round off the event.

“Lawrence has a fantastic, vibrant music scene, with a huge variety of performers, bands, songwriters and musicians,” says Silly Goose founder and Creative Director, Nick Carswell. “However, the music industry can be tricky and complicated, and it’s hard for bands to know what that next step is for them, in order to keep going with their music. This event is a chance for us to come together, share some experience and knowledge, and help us each figure out what those next steps are, as well as learning how to make the most out of the industry that we already support.”

The bands playing the showcase include:

The Phantastics – Ambassadors of Phunk, Rap, Rock, and Soul. The Phantastics is a seven member musical ensemble that specializes in genre- blending hip-hop. Expect to hear rock, rap, dance, funk, jazz and soul in our music. Formed in December of 2010 They’ve been trying to save live music ever since. http://www.facebook.com/thephantastics

SUNU – a wall of drums, horns and funk. Formed in 2007 in Lawrence, KS this 9 member ensemble mixes afrobeat, jazz, funk, New Orleans street beats and West African dance drumming to create a tasty brew of shake your ass music. http://www.sunumusic.com

Carswell & Hope – vintage rock sounds and sensibilities together with big harmonies, carefully crafted textures and inventive songwriting. The tone is a blend of psychedelic, Pink Floyd interrupting Motown, channeling Van Morrison and Wilco. Think Mumford & Sons meets Sigur Ros, and Glen Hansard shows them around town. http://www.carswellandhope.com

Forrester – From the same family of experimental post-rock as Tortoise, Mogwai and Deerhunter comes Forrester, five piece guitar and sample factory from Lawrence, KS. Sprawling soundscapes, pulsing beats and frenetic energy bubble beneath the surface of Forrester’s sound. http://forrester.bandcamp.com/

Pink Royal – sounds that blend ambient rock, electronica, indie synth-pop and all kinds of musical sexiness. Imagine Muse, MGMT, and Radiohead had a steamy musical orgy with Stevie Wonder, and Pink Royal was born 9 months later. Guthrie on lead vocals is an electrifying performer, and is perfectly tuned to the complexity of the songs that belies their outright funkiness and dance groovability. https://www.facebook.com/pinkroyalmusic

11:51 – In Memory of Beth

I met Beth in 1990 when she was a regular contributor to The Spoken Word, a weekly live show I produced at Cafe Lulu on West 39th st., near where Beth lived with her girlfriend at that time, Joan. Beth was already a local force, writing & producing her own songs. She had lived in Lawrence and was an early pioneer of the DIY music scene.

Beth Scalet was a fearless performer, lover, renegade, folk singer, survivor, guitarist, scenester, storyteller, neighbor, sister, girlfriend, poet, pioneer, songwriter, collaborator, producer, visionary. Our hearts goes out to Stephanie, Beth’s family, and all of Beth’s friends who loved here and her music.

Elizabeth “Beth” Scalet, was 65 when passed away, on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Kansas City Hospice House. Beth was born Sept. 17, 1948, in Ottawa, Kan., the daughter of Walter L. and Jessie M. Tucker Butler. She was a graduate of Ottawa High School and received an MA in English Literature from the University of Kansas. Beth was a technical writer and editor for Continental Health Care and DST Systems. She was a recognized and popular guitar player, singer, songwriter and harmonica player. Beth issued six albums and CDs through her own music company, Marais des Cygnes Music. She was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Rex. Beth is survived by her partner, Stephanie LaSalle, and her brothers, Walter “Bill” Butler and Robert “Bob” Butler. [KC Star Obituary]

A Beth Scalet Musical Memorial & Celebration of Her Life, will be held Sunday, May 4, at 5:00 pm, at All Soul’s Unitarian Universalist Church, 4501 Walnut, Kansas City. The Music memorial will be held from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., followed by food and fellowship from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Organizers have added an 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. “open mic” for those many musicians who would like to play a tune to honor Beth Scalet.
