from: Jack Moon Sessions / Independent / , 2013
[Two years ago while John was visiting the famous Sun Studios in Memphis, TN where Presley, Cash, Howlin’ Wolf, Jerry Lee Lewis, and so many others have recorded John decided to produce a single at the legendary studio and a session being booked. He originally only booked 2 hours thinking that would be plenty of time to get several takes of “Die with Me”, his most recent song. 2 hours turned into 4, and 8 tracks were recorded with 3 takes of each song. This “live” album was brought back to KC and discussed with Brent Jamison & Chappy Felkins of Dreamwolfanimalbear Productions, with the intention of adding more instrumentation to it, to bring out a full band sound that John had planned for most of the songs. John’s friends Betse Ellis; Elaine McMillan; Megan Zander & Chris Taddy of Dream Wolf; Clint Hoffmeier of Ned Ludd and Vehicle; and Hume Man were asked to sit in on the Chappy Road sessions and create the sound John was hearing in his head.]

In the 1990s he performed with Iris Dement and Howard Eisberg. Said to be 30 years in the making, Scott Hrabko released his new album, “Gone Places” in November of 2013. In the December 31, 2013, KC Pitch weekly, Music Editor Natalie Gallagher wrote a feature about Scott Hrabko, who is quoted as saying, “My musical career has been a textbook example of bad timing, missed connections, stops and starts and detours.” You even had second thoughts about releasing the CD, you thought it might get lost in the shuffle.”

Scott Hrabko has been making music in Kansas City since the mid 1980s as part of the indie rock scene. He went to school at The Kansas City Art Institute in the 1980s.

In the Pitch article, Natalie Gallagher writes that Scott Hrabko’s “debut sounds like a record belonging in rotation between Buck Owens and Willie Nelson. It feels familiar, the way a classic country album would.”

Scott brought along guitarist Kirk Scott, who some of us recently heard playing with Elaine McMilian, at the Money Wold Music Showcase, in room 701, at 2:00 in the morning, at the Westin Crown Center, for the Folk Alliance International Conference, with Jeff Harshbarger playing bass.

Maria The Mexican is influenced by traditional Mariachi music, the band calls their sound “a hybrid of Mexican folklore and Rock.” Your grandmother Maria Teresa Alonzo Cuevas was is a pioneer in the Hispanic musical community. In 1970, she formed one of the first all female mariachi bands in the country, Marachi Estrella. Marachi Estrella flourished in the 1980s but was struck by tragedy when four of the seven members were killed in the Hyatt Skywalk collapse in 1981. It was after this tragedy, and after Teresa recovered, that she began teaching her grandchildren Mariachi music.

For 12 years, Tess and Maria Elena Cuevas performed with Marachi Estrella. Both started playing in second grade. Tess is a classically trained vocalist and violinist, Maria is classically trained on vihuela, guitar, piano and vocals.

Both graduated from the University of Kansas with degrees in Communications and minors in Latin American studies.

In 2000 Tess and Maria began exploring other genres of music while simultaneously co-directing Mariachi Estrella.

Maria the Mexican began as a band in 2011, in Chicago, when vocalists Maria and Tess Cuevas hired blues/funk musician Garrett Nordstrom to play Mariachi guitar. Undeterred, Berwanger put together a country-rock outfit called The Only Children–and released (2004’s Change of Living and 2007’s Keeper of Youth) before pulling the plug on that project and taking a job doing the next most logical thing possible– coaching high school basketball in Lawrence, Kansas. For Strange Stains, Berwanger joined forces with (original drummer for The Anniversary) Michael Hutcherson, who brought brought the rhythm to the record. “Josh and I met in 1996 while playing in local KC pop punk bands,” recalls Hutcherson, “I am honored to be making music with Josh again. HARRISHAM

Long before The Voice or American Idol there was Star Search, a show that launched the career of Sam Harris who was the Male Vocalist Champion of the first season. Signed to Motown Records, his debut release “Sam Harris” and the follow up “Sam-I-Am” both contained Top 40 hits. Along with multi-platinum record sales, nine full length studio releases, and many years of touring, Sam is also a star of Broadway. He received a Drama Desk nomination for his role in the Tommy Tune-directed revival of GREASE. He was also nominated for a Drama League Award, a Tony Award, an Outer Critic’s Circle Award and a Drama Desk Award for his work in Cy Coleman’s THE LIFE. He’s also appeared on Broadway in Mel Brooks’ THE PRODUCERS, in the national tour of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT and in the musicals JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, CABARET, HAIR and PIPPIN. Currently, Sam is preparing for the long-awaited production of THE BROADWAY MAN, in which he stars as the darkly complex and charismatic Al Jolson. Sam has also worked extensively in television. At the request of Elizabeth Taylor, Sam became one of the first celebrities to lead the fight against AIDS. Sam has performed in countless benefits and personally collected funds in every major theatre in the country for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. He has also worked to raise funds and awareness for a number of children’s health organizations and continues to fight for equal rights and campaign for fair-minded politicians. Sam Harris will be on stage at The Folly Theatre, tomorrow night, Thurs., Feb. 13, at 7:30 pm, with a ‘Liter-Usical’ show that contains musical songs and literary selections from his new memoir, “Ham: Slices of a Life,” which was released in January, from Simon & Schuster.

“Ham” starts off with a short story about Sam Harris growing up in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. He left home at the early age of 15, to start working professionally as an actor. His first real job was Six Flags Over Mid-America in St. Louis in a show called “Ramblin’ Thru Missou.”

Sam knew what you wanted to do with his life at an early age, but he just had to fight to find the opportunities to do what you loved. His very first productions were in his family’s basement in a show called “An Evening of Music & Bowling.”

The turntable and vinyl records were a huge part of his early journey of discovery.

“Ham” tell stories from Sam’s life. The book is filled with wonderful characters who weave in and out of the stories. His father, a High School Band Director, is prominent throughout the book.

In 1983, Star Search introduced Sam to 25 million viewers each week, next came Motown Records, television appearances, world tours, Carnegie Hall, The Apollo. Motown embraced Sam for his incredible vocal abilities.

Sam became famous in an time when pop music was embracing a new British invasion of New Wave, androgynous singers, and gay artists who weren’t openly gay. Like many LGBT artists of the time, many of us knew and identified with Sam.

“Ham” tells the story of your Sam’s personal observations of wedding guests at Liza Minelli’s wedding with the “Man Whose Name Shall Go Unmentioned.” He specifically writes about Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor, two superstars who crossed Sam’s path and factored into his life. Sam has been friends with Liza for many years.

In “Ham” Sam writes about his husband and partner, Danny Jacobsen who he met while on the national tour of “Joesph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” He has been with Danny for 20 years and is now married and they have adopted a son, Cooper Atticus Harris-Jacobsen, born April 7, 2008.

Sam Harris has been an advocate for Gay marriage, fighting against Prop 8 in California. His most recent recording “Reclamation” deals directly with this civil rights matter.

On Sam’s debut, and in a Motown Apollo television special, and countless other variety and talk shows, he has performed “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” a song that has become one of his signatures. This past year, Sam performed the song beautifully on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.”

There are many celebrities in “Ham slices of a life,” as there should be.

Jerry Blatt
Tommy Tune
Aretha Franklin
Donny Osmond
Lucille Ball
Frank Langella
