10:15 – Interview with Walter Coppage and Nedra Dixon

IMG_7304_2

Spinning Tree Theatre is presenting the Kansas City premiere of “Black Pearl Sings,” on stage through March 22, at Just Off Broadway Theatre, 3051 Penn Valley Drive, KCMO. Written by Frank Higgins, directed by Walter Coppage, this acclaimed play features Nedra Dixon as Pearl, an African-American woman with a powerful voice in a Texas prison, and Vanessa Severo as Susannah, an ambitious song collector for the Library of Congress. More info at: http://www.spinningtreetheatre.com

Walter Coppage has appeared with The Steppenwolf Theatre Company, The Studio Theatre in Washington, DC, The Kansas City Repertory Theatre, The St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre, The Coterie, KC Actors Theatre and The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, and has played principal roles in feature films and television. He is a founding member of KC Actors Theatre, an Advisory Board member for The KC FilmFest and KC Jubilee and is The Unicorn Theatre’s Actor Ambassador for the National New Play Network. You may recognize his voice from his broadcasting and voice over work.

Nedra Dixon is a professional actress, and singer who has performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and Madison Square Garden, on Broadway, Off Broadway, national tours, regional theaters, and in Kansas City at The Unicorn, The Coterie, American Heartland Theatre, and many others. She is a featured vocalist on 12th Street Jump, the locally-produced jazz radio show that is broadcast on 110 NPR stations nationwide, and is a proud member of the Kansas City vocal jazz trio, Book of Gaia, with Angela Hagenbach and Pamela Baskin-Watson.

“Black Pearl Sings” has been produced all over, Washington DC, Portland, San Jose, Chicago, bit this is the Kansas City premiere of a play written by Kansas City based playwright Frank Higgins, perhaps Kansas City’s most famous playwright, this seems like perfect choice for Spinning Tree Theatre, one of KC newest Equity Theatres.

Walter Coppage talked about how he learned about this play and how it became the show where he made his directorial debut.

Nedra Dixon plays Alberta “Pearl” Johnson, described in one review as, “doing hard time in a Texas prison after visiting Lorena Bobbitt–style vengeance on a man with the devil in his hands.”

This is not a musical, by definition, however there are a lot of songs in this show, making it a play with music.

“Playwright Frank Higgins was inspired by the real-life relationship between legendary singer/guitarist Huddie William Ledbetter, Lead Belly) and Harvard folk musicologist John Lomax, who helped petition for Ledbetter’s release from prison, and later became his manager. Lomax figured, rightly, that African Americans in prison were more likely to be unaffected by popular music of the time, thus retaining early musical influences.”

Vanessa Severo plays Susannah, a song collector for the Library of Congress. “People with good voices tend to know a lot of songs,” Susannah observes, hoping Pearl will offer up an unknown song to help further her academic career. Pearl makes the decision to share her songs and voice when Susannah offers to help search for Pearl’s 22-year-old daughter, who is missing from her Houston neighborhood.

So much about this play depends on the two actress, who alone bring this play and these characters to life each night on stage.

Spinning Tree Theatre presents the KC premiere of “Black Pearl Sings,” on stage through March 22, at Just Off Broadway Theatre, 3051 Penn Valley Drive, KCMO. Written by Frank Higgins, directed by Walter Coppage, this acclaimed play features Nedra Dixon as Pearl, and Vanessa Severo as Susannah. More info at: http://www.spinningtreetheatre.com

The dedication and ferociousness with which he performs is worth the price of admission alone, but then there are the songs… His songs tell tales of deceased mothers, down-on-their-luck working men, drunks and encounters with strangers. Nicholas’ sound is one-part gypsy and one-part blues while honoring and expanding on the genre Americana. …and he helped me push my stalled Toyota Land Cruiser out of the middle of Main Street and into a parking lot nearby.]

11:22 – Interview with Katlyn Conroy

La Guerre

La Guerre

Musician, singer and songwriter, Katlyn Conroy, is a Lawrence, Kansas native. She was a member of the acclaimed and popular band, Cowboy Indian Bear. Katlyn has been releasing and performing music for over 10 years. Katlyn was the winner of a 2013 Pitch Music Award for Best Singer/Songwriter. More info at: http://www.katlynconroy.bandcamp.com.

Katlyn starting playing the piano at the age of 7, and started singing around that time also. Her mother was an opera singer and her family encouraged her musical endeavors. When she was 15 years old she began performing out with her original material.

Sapphires was produced, and engineered by Joshua Browning who also played bass. Joshua has worked with Katlyn on most all of her recording projects. Several members of Cowboy Indian Bear came in to help play on her recording. Percussion: Beau Bruns, Chris Brower. Guitar/Additional Vox: Charles Calhoun, Gavin Snider; Trombone: Joshua Landau; Additional Vox: Will Weinstein.

Katlyn Conroy is a prolific songwriter. In a short period of time she has released several full-length recordings and EPs. Recently Katlyn Conroy was featured in the Lawrence Journal-World for her Valentine’s Day Project where she wrote over 35 personalized tunes and recorded them for customers, to give to their loved ones or friends, all for 20 dollars, a song. She spent hours making each song original and specially customized for each valentine.

Katlyn Conroy’s project La Guerre has been called “brutally honest and emotional… She doesn’t hold back.” Katlyn told us about how her songs all start with the lyrics and then she builds the melody around the words.

La Guerre is the French word for “war.” The name was inspired from a 10-minute, French song, performed by her high school acapella choir, where they reenacted a war with vocals.

Katlyn Conroy told the Lawrence Journal-World tha, La Guerre is… “something much bigger than any other solo project she’s pursued in the past.”

Katlyn’s recordings with La Guerre overlapped with the recordings and touring of Cowboy Indian Bear. Katlyn became the fourth member of Cowboy Indian Bear after the release of their debut full-length. Cowboy Indian Bear released their last recording, Vandeventer, in May, 2014. it was an album of songs written and inspired after their van broke down in St. Louis. The line-up of Cowboy Indian Bear included: Beau Bruns, CJ Calhoun, Danny Bowersox, Katlyn Conroy, and Martinez Hillard.

These are recording notes from the band’s release, Vandeventer: “Back in the fall, on our way east for a run of shows, our faithful van finally kicked the bucket in Saint Louis. We were there in STL for a few days and figured we would use the time to make something positive out of a less than ideal situation. Those are the songs that make up this EP, named after a street a couple blocks from where our van decided it had done all it could.”

Katlyn Conroy shared a new song…

11:29

16. La Guerre – “Happy to be Here” (LIVE)
[a new song]

Katlyn Conroy released her first solo record, I Think I’ll Stay inside, in 2009. She has also played in the bands: Another Holiday, Katlyn Conroy & The Wild & Wooly, One More Cheerful Action, The Ultraviolets, as well as Cowboy Indian Bear.

As a musician and songwriter, Katlyn is a big fan of Conor Oberst. She has seen Bright Eyes in concert 21 times. Her other influences include: St. Vincent, and Regina Spektor.

Playing sometimes solo, and also as a 4-piece band, Katlyn Conroy told the Lawrence Journal World that La Guerre… “ is my chance to take everything I’ve worked so hard on and really show people what they’ve been missing.”

Katlyn Conroy shared another new song…

10:34 – Interview with Johnny Hamil

Musician and composer Johnny Hamil is a teacher, a bass player who collaborates with jazz combos, theatre productions, The Malachy Papers, and many musicians in Kansas City. Johnny is one of the founding members of the band Mr. Marco’s V7, a band that has reinvented themselves with each new release, and changed and evolved with different line-ups. Known for their experimental, instrumental music, Johnny told us that for ALL of the music he has composed for the band came to him in his dreams. 4 years ago Johnny’s dream compositions included lyrics for the first time, and this set him on a new path to create, the GAWD project, which is not Mr. Marco’s V7 proper, but it is members of the V7 from throughout the long history of the the band. The concept was to collaborate a vocal version of a composition with musical friends and then have various lineups of the V7 family interpret the material in different ways. Selections from the GAWD project that will premiere at the Folk Alliance International – Kick Off Party, Feb. 18, at 8:00 pm in the Penn Valley Room, at The Westin Kansas City at Crown Center, TONIGHT!

The Blackbird Revue will also play the 5th Annual Middle of The Map Fest, April 22-25.

In the spring of 2007, with degree in hand, and a nearly finished solo album, Jacob moved to Kansas City, by the end of 2008 The Blackbird Revue was formed with Danielle. Jacob and Danielle talked about how they met, and began collaborating.

From Bio info at TheBlackbirdRevue.com:
Danielle was in the midst of making plans to record her own album. And suddenly everything changed. Almost as soon as they met, Jacob and Danielle realized that they would be better together – as singers, musicians, people. They quickly became romantically and musically inseparable, and in the fall of 2008 officially formed The Blackbird Revue, a collaborative musical effort, reflecting both Danielle’s melodic pop-rock sensibilities, and Jacob’s folk/americana roots. It remains a project truly born of a deep, shared love.

Danielle and Jacob recently celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary by leaving their day jobs and committing to full-time pursuit of this beautiful, musical dream. A leap of faith, made with high hopes, grounded in true love.
