1. PRETTY – “Mustache In Your Face” (Vinyl)
from Local Customs: Cavern Sounds / Numero Group / October 24
[In 1967 you could rent Cavern Studios for $40.00 per hour, and you could have your sessions mastered and pressed into 500, 45-rpm, 7-inch records for $175.00. Cavern Studios were located underground in a former limestone mine in Independence, Missouri. Numero Group, the label that serve as musical achealogists digging up and preserving forgotten and lost recordings, and music scenes from the past, and who last year brought us a collection from Kansas City’s Forte Records, and have just released: Local Custom: Cavern Sound, featuring 24 songs from 18 different acts who cut records at Cavern.]

[“Hailing from Kansas City, Pretty were more famously known as the Fabulous Four, a local beat combo that ground their way through the K.C. club scene from 1959 to 1976. In 1969, they buried themselves in a hole in a Missouri hillside, known as the Cavern Recording Studio, alongside Electric Prunes drummer Michael “Quint” Weakley. Together, they churned out eight tracks as Pretty — earthy, grooving hard rock pushed to the hilt with stuttering, psychedelic Wurlitzer work and some supremely heeeeeavy fuzzed-out electric guitar riffs. The title track, “Mustache in Your Face,” is the pick of this litter, featuring hilariously incongruous lyrics about “a girl/yeah yeah,” “the devil and the monkeys are comin’ upstairs,” and “what a lie, what a lie/mustache in your face.” Don’t bother trying to parse out the sentiments, just keep these psychedelic scorchers on rotation; all the b-sides are killers in their own rights. -Michael Stasiak (January 25, 2013)]

[Bob Theen told Garage Hangover: “To my knowledge the record was not distributed at all. After the sessions, Weekly took off for California to try and sell them to someone. Don’t think he had any luck, and we didn’t see much of him after that.” ]

[Bob Theen, Jeff Mann, Mike Myers, Mark Higbee, & original drummer Alex Love On were inducted into the Kansas Music Hall Of Fame on March 22, 2008, as The Fabulous Four Band]

2. King Tuff – “Eyes of the Muse”
from: Black Spell Moon / Sub Pop Records / September 23, 2014
[5th studio release of King Tuff who is Kyle Thomas, who also records with Burger Records and is currently on tour in Europe.]

10:10 – Underwriting

3. Steve Grand – “Stay (Radio Edit)”
from: Stay (Radio Edit) – Single / Grand Nation / September 4, 2013
[Born Feb. 28, 1990, Steve Grand is a musician and singer-songwriter from Lemont, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. He became an overnight internet celebrity and was acclaimed by some to be the first openly gay male country musician to attract mainstream attention in the United States. The music video of his first hit “All-American Boy” went viral on YouTube in less than a week in July 2013. This attention landed Grand on “Good Morning America,” CNN and other national media. Buzzfeed ranked the video on its list of the “24 Most Brilliant Music Videos from 2013,” and Out magazine named Grand to its annual “Out100” list of the year’s most compelling LGBT people. In addition to being a musician, Grand has become an active figure in the LGBT equality movement.]

10:15 – Interview with Chely Wright

Last week in an interview with Rollingstone.com Chely Wright reported that her recent 45-day Kickstarter campaign “… was the sixth most successful music campaign in Kickstarter’s history and the Number One most successful campaign in country music in Kickstarter history. ”

The Rolling Stone article reported that “with about half of the record already written, Wright looks to mid-2015 as the potential release date for the new project. And in spite of her having moved to New York City and becoming a wife, mother and prominent activist for the LGBT community, the record will remain rooted in country music.”

We talked with Chely about her last release, “Lifted Off The Ground” where she wrote almost all of the songs on that album, that was produced by music legend Rodney Crowell.

Chely Wright married Sony Music Entertainment’s Director of Marketing, Lauren Blitzer in 2011 and gave birth to their twin sons in 2013.

[Kristie Stremel, with partner Lori Isabell, adopted baby son, Charlie. Kristie told Tim Finn in the KC Star, “The weight of bringing a new, little creature home was a little overwhelming at first,” she said. “But it has been everything I wanted it to be. I’ve always wanted to have a child. Sometimes, desire is all it takes. If you desire it, it will come to you.” “I have a different perspective now that I have a kid, and maybe it will change. But I can’t see giving up music for anything.” Stremeltone Records, was created in her home in Lawrence. The last track, “It’s Enough” was released early, as a video, featuring photos of couples in partenerships, relationships, marriages, unions, families. The video was your own response the the Kansas House of Representatives passing HD 2453 allowing business the right to refuse srevice to LGBT customers. The bill eventually died in the Kansas Senate.]

10:32 – Interview with Kristie Stremel

Described as “Joan Jett & Tom Petty’s love child,” and armed with her guitar, fueled by coffee, and over 75 published songs, singer, songwriter, producer, rock & roll mom, Kristie Stremel has had a very busy year. Last October, 2013 Kristie and her partner, Lori Isabell, welcomed their adopted baby son, Charlie, into their family. In April, Kristie released her 6th solo record, and the 9th full-length release of her musical career of over 20 years. Released on her own label, Stremeltone, it was Kristie’s first self-produced album. This summer Kristie went to work producing a new full length CD and book called “Wildflowers,” a compilation of 14 original songs & 5 poems for and about children, illustrated by Blue Haas. Kristie also recently released a new single “Love Makes A Family” with read-along book for the song she wrote for her son Charlie in an effort to explain the importance of family and to help celebrate the diversity in families today.

Kristie Stremel’s solo release “Songwriter,” was her first self produced record that was mixed by Lou Whitney famed musician and producer who in 2001 produced her first solo full-length, “All I Really Want,” for Slewfoot Records. It was just a month ago that we lost Lou, who was 72 and was battling cancer, but still playing in his band Outland through 2013. Kristie has said that Lou Whitney was… “my mentor, a father figure,”

About Kristie, Lou told Tim Finn in the KC Star: “I thought she had all the ingredients,” he said. “The songs were poppy efforts to write songs that might actually do something. She was writing personal stuff but couching it in this rock-pop way.”

Chris Meck, who played lead guitar on the 2001, release, “All I Really Want” joined in on “Songwriter” and helped with “Wildflowers.” Chris and Kristie hadn’t played together in over 10 years.

Chris Meck is known for the bands: The Gaslights, Atlantic Fadeout, and Tiny Horse, with Abigail Henderson.

His new band is: Chris Meck and The Guilty Birds.

Stremeltone Records, with studios created in Kristie’s home in Lawrence, gives her the flexibility to work from home, and is also part of the musical evolution where musicians are their own agents, producers, labels, marketing, tour managers. Working from home, multi-tasking, taking care of a growing baby boy, while also recording a record, was all part of the evolution that led Kristie to make “Wildflowers.”

After touring with Steve Earle in 2009, Pug was signed by Nashville indie label Lightning Rod Records and released Messenger in 2010. After moving to Austin, Pug released The Great Despiser in 2012. In 2010 Sara Swenson released her second full length recording, “All Things Big and Small” again working with Don Chaffer in Nashville who added new layers to Sara’s great songs and voice. In Novenber of 2011, Sara released her 5 song EP called “Never Left My Mind,” featuring her band, The Pearl Snaps. In that time frame, she also had picked up two Kansas City Singer-Songwriter of the Year awards, performed with Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair, and placed a song on the season finale of ABC’s “Private Practice.” Then after the school year ended in 2012, Sara Swenson left her job as a High School English and Journalism Teacher in Platte County High School, and flew off to the United Kingdom, where she ended up getting married to her husband. 7. M. Hederos & M. Hellberg – “Been Smoking Too Long”
from: M. Hederos M. Hellberg / Gravitation Recordings / 2003
[This piano and vocal duo was born on New Years Day 2001. They both used to play in a band called Nyphet Noodlers and they were supposed to have a reunion in a studio but the others didn’t show up. To pass time while waiting for the others, they played some songs they loved. The engineer pressed the record button and the result was a record with interpretations of rock classics that stunned the audience. It is not often a cover version will give an old song such a new meaning, but with Martin Hederos sensitive and fondling hands over the keyboard and Mattias husky voice they create a sense of melancholy gospel and soul. They recorded a second album “Together in the darkness” and by then they had developed their own songwriting that well holds the standard. The recording is made in Silence Studio with Micke Herrström as producer. The recordings started of course on a New Years Day after a great party the night before together with friends and beloved. They played all over Scandinavia, Germany and France, went on tour with Ryan Adams and was support for Van Morrison. They were so popular they had to quit in 2002/2003 to have time for their ordinary lives! Martin Hederos is a member of The Soundtrack Of Our Lives and Tonbruket. Mattias have been playing guitar with The Hellacopters and Håkan Hellström and is a member of Nationalteatern.]

10:00 – Remembering Anne Winter

from: Eulogies / Dangerbird Records / September 11, 2007

2. Mark Manning – “On meeting Anne Winter”

I met Anne Winter in February 1989. I asked her for items from her window that I could use as props at The Unicorn Theatre, she gladly started handing me things. My path crossed with Anne’s on the issues of censorship and free speech. The Greater Kansas City Coalition Against Censorship, sprang from Anne’s relationship with Richard & Linda Rostenberg, and so many others, and Anne created Culture Under Fire usually in April, lasting 10 days or so, involving lots of bands and music venues and performance artists and writers and teen poets, and zine editors, and activists and artists, all celebrating culture and free speech.

Anne Winter made a BIG difference, in my life, and in so many lives, and in our community. She connected people, cultivated events, nudged her friends closer to their dreams, making realities happen. I remember when she picked me up in her van, and drove me to Sandstone, put a wrist band on my arm and pushed me into the Spoken Word tent at Lolapalooza, or when she asked me to be Stage Manager for a show at The Uptown featuring Michael Moore, Iris DeMent and The Wilders. Anne was so staggering in her service to humankind, that it feels like she is still conducting her work, even after passing from this physical world. Is she collaborating with the higher frequencies?

I know I’m not alone, when I confess, that there are times when I feel her gentle encouragement or her beneficial honesty offered during a difficult decision. I hear her suggestion on the playlist, “can you include Calexico?” I see the relationships and connections she fostered, and all of us, who love her, are connected. I witness the meaningfulness of her beautiful life, in a world where it all goes… really fast.

I recently saw her son Max at YJ’s. David said, “look, there’s Max.” He has grown taller. He and his sister Eva, they love their mother so very much. And they have a beautiful father… Kurt von Schlemmer we love you, and send our best wishes to you and your family.

Today we start our show by remembering Anne Winter, with six songs from: The Pixies, Talking Heads, Calexico, The Flaming Lips, Loose Cannon Brass Band, and Iris DeMent, and intermingled with the music, are words from four friends: Lisa Cordes, Tim Kearns, Billy Smith, and Iris DeMent, and even a little bit of Anne herself.

These are excerpts from our 100th show, March 22, 2006 – a Tribute to Recycled Sounds.

We observe that on this day, in this moment, it has been five years.

We miss you Anne!

The accompanying booklet is particularly meaty, as band members Mac McCaughan, Jim Wilbur, Laura Ballance and Jon Wurster weigh in with what they remember (or don’t remember) about the songs. The song “Does Your Hometown Care?” was on the soundtrack to the 1997 film Suburbia.]

26. David Bowie – “Five Years”
from: Stage [Live] / RCA / September 8, 1978
[Stage is David Bowie’s second live album, recorded on the Isolar II world tour, and released by RCA Records in 1978. First UK pressings were on translucent yellow vinyl and some European pressings were also available on blue vinyl. Though it was rumored at the time that this would be his final outing with the label, following dissatisfaction over the promotion of Low and “Heroes”, Bowie would in fact remain with RCA until 1982. The recording was culled from concerts in Philadelphia, Providence and Boston, USA. It primarily included material from Bowie’s most recent studio albums to that date, Station to Station, Low and “Heroes” but, in a surprise show of nostalgia, also featured five songs from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Aside from Bowie’s core team of Carlos Alomar, Dennis Davis and George Murray, band members included ex-Frank Zappa sideman Adrian Belew on guitar, Simon House from Hawkwind on electric violin, Roger Powell, best known for his work with Todd Rundgren in the group Utopia, on keyboards and Sean Mayes on piano, string ensemble and backup vocals. All would reunite the following year on Bowie’s next studio LP, Lodger. Generally considered more relaxed than Bowie’s previous live album, David Live (1974), Stage was praised on its initial vinyl release for the fidelity with which the band was able to emulate in concert the electronic and effects-filled numbers from Low and “Heroes”, as well as for the singer’s vocal performance. However, it was criticized for lacking a ‘live’ atmosphere, thanks to the recording being largely taken from direct instrument and microphone feeds which increased sound quality but minimized crowd noise. The original concert running order was also changed, with fades between tracks similar to a studio album.]

Amy Farrand talked about setting up for tonight’s Weirdo Wednesday Supper Club, the work involved, and how after 5 years she was ready to move on to new experiments.

Originally Amy did the Weirdo Wednesday show every week, and then after a hiatus she brought it back as a monthly event, and now after nearly 5 years she is getting ready to end the series.

Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club is a venue where Amy has played live music since she was 15 years old, in her first bands.

Tonight’s Weirdo Wednesday Supper Club features The Silver Maggies fronted by lead singer/songwriters – Patrick Deveny and Terrence Moore (American Catastrophe, The Black Water). Founding members include Felix Dukes on electric guitar, Jonathan Knecht on drums and Steve Tubbert (Zoom) on bass. Amy Farrand (American Catastrophe, Atlantic Fadeout, EIO) on vocals and additional instrumentation.

The Murder Ballad Ball was where Amy became a member of The Silver Maggies.

Amy also is doing more shows with Sister Mary Rotten Crotch

Being a drummer and bassist gives the opportunity to see a band from a special perspective.

In 2012 Amy released her solo EP, “Amy Farrand (Loves) You,” to critical acclaim. It was on our list of The 112 Best Recordings of 2012. One of our favorite songs from that release is “How You Feelin'” a song that features Ernie Locke on harmonica.

Both artists performed on “My Pale Horse” and joined the band for a raucous set at the 2012 Murder Ballad Ball in Kansas City. The album was recorded over the last year by Chris Cosgrove at Black Lodge, Cosgrove Audio, WaveLab and Element Recording. Mixing was done in Tuscon, AZ at WaveLab by veteran producer/engineer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Neko Case, DeVotchKa).]

10. Goat – “Hide From The Sun”
from: Commune / Sub Pop / September 23, 2014
[Goat is a Swedish alternative and experimental fusion music group. Currently based out of Gothenburg, they claim to hail from Korpilombolo in Sweden which, according to the band’s own publicity, has a history of voodoo worship after a witch doctor came and lived there. Supposedly, when Christian crusaders came and destroyed the village the surviving people fled and placed a curse on the town. This has been described as “a lovely story, if possibly not entirely rooted in reality.” The band started playing music when they were children, as part of a local community tradition, and there have been many incarnations of Goat who have recorded over the last “30 or 40 years”. There are now three original “core” members of the band, from Korpilombolo, but in live concerts they are augmented by four other performers from Gothenburg.]

Fela Kuti was born October 15, 1938 and died August 2, 1997. He was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, human rights activist, and political maverick. Afrobeat, a style he largely created is a complex fusion of Jazz, Funk, Ghanaian/Nigerian High-life, psychedelic rock, and traditional West African chants and rhythms. Afrobeat also borrows heavily from the native “tinker pan” African-style percussion that Kuti acquired while studying in Ghana with Hugh Masekela. The importance of the input of Tony Allen (Fela’s drummer of twenty years) in the creation of Afrobeat cannot be overstated. Fela once famously stated that “without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat”. Afrobeat is characterized by a fairly large band with many instruments, vocals, and a musical structure featuring jazzy, funky horn sections. A riff-based “endless groove” is used, in which a base rhythm of drums, muted West African-style guitar, and melodic bass guitar riffs are repeated throughout the song.

11. Fela Kuti – “Mr. Follow Follow”
from: The Underground Spitual Game / Quannum Projects / Sept. 7, 2004 [From Knitting Factory Records: “Over a decade after his death, vindication has come to Fela Kuti, Africa’s musical genius. AfroBeat, his gift to the world, is now an international staple on his own uncompromising terms, social content intact. Throughout his life, Fela contended that AfroBeat was a modern form of danceable, African classical music with an urgent message for the planet’s denizens. Created out of a cross-breeding of Funk, Jazz, Salsa and Calypso with Juju, Highlife and African percussive patterns, it was to him a political weapon. Fela refused to bow to the music industry’s preference for 3-minute tracks, nor did he buckle under entreaties to moderate his overwhelmingly political lyrics. He went down in 1997 still railing against the consumerist gimmicks that taint pop music, with the aim, he felt, of promoting and imposing homogeneous aesthetic standards worldwide, thereby inducing passivity. The fact that AfroBeat is today globally winning hearts in its original form – lengthy, ably crafted, earthy compositions laced with explicitly political lyrics – suggests that Fela’s purgatory on earth may have served to awaken a sensibility in people to appreciate authenticity and substance.”]

Writer Brian Clifton in reviewing My Oh My! for http://www.MillsRecordCompany.com wrote: “My Oh My jangles and twangs its way right into your heart. With harmonies so chillingly beautiful they give goosebumps (at least to me), the band creates a sonic barrage of acoustic instruments and heartfelt lyrics. Balancing on a tightrope between country and piano rock, My Oh My blazes off into their songs without hesitation.”

Natalie Gallagher, Music Editor of The Pitch wrote, “Lead singer A.M. Merker has a certain booze-drenched roughness to his voice, the kind that always sounds so good when paired with a rollicking piano and some driving guitar chords.”
