Wednesday MidDay Medley gets a little bit country.

1. Wussy – “Teenage Wasteland”
from: Attica / Shake It Records / May 27, 2014
[Fifth studio album from Cincinnati, Ohio, indie rock band formed in 2001. The 11 songs on Attica! were recorded at Ultrasuede Studios in Cincinnati, which is owned by former Afghan Whigs bassist John Curley. The album also saw the return of a member of one of Wussy frontman Chuck Cleaver’s former bands–Ass Ponys guitarist John Erhardt performed on Attica! as Wussy’s fifth member. Attica!’s opening track, “Teenage Wasteland”, describes singer Lisa Walker’s memories of listening to the Who, especially the song “Baba O’Riley”, and includes shoutouts to several of its members. The song also contains a guitar part that closely resembles that on Baba O’Riley. The album’s title track also references Dog Day Afternoon, portraying it as a tale of romantic desperation.]

[Wussy plays the recordBar, Thursday, July 3, with Schwervon!, and Admiral of the Red.]

2. Loose Park – “Good As Life”
from: Monstrous / Independent / June 4, 2013
[Brand new music from Kansas City based band formed in June 2013 with Matthew Dunehoo on guitar, vocals; Beckie Trost on Bass guitar; and Mike Myers on Drums . This trio are also members/former members of Doris Henson/Baby Teardrops/Ecstatics, The String & Return/In The Pines/Spacesuit, and Soft Reeds.] [Notes from Matt Dunehoo: Two men and a lady present: Loose Park’s “MONSTROUS: A Recorded Album of Sacred Music.” We had initially thought we’d record this on our own at home, but fate led elsewhere and basic tracking occurred January 9th 2014 at Element Studios with the generous Joel Nanos in Kansas City, Missouri, the day after our first show. The album was then mixed by me, Matthew Dunehoo, alone at home using a seven-and-a-half-gallon stainless steel brew kettle and a my first Sony thinking-compewtur, between January and May, 2014. But seriously, the album had to take this long as it’s still coming together this very night and I have so much appreciated my first chance to produce the imperfect album now in your ears, thank you Beckie and Mike. Finally mastered mercifully (tomorrow) by Jason Carter at Atomic Disc, Salem, OR. Loose Park began when I moved home in a fog from NYC in June 2013 and began writing music upon landing with my longtime friend and drummer Mike Myers. We invited new longtime friend Beckie Trost into the fold to bass it up and never looked back. Loose Park, the park, has always been a sanctuary of magical possibility for me over the years. I remember one summer in particular when I was often in odd spots of heart I’d head there regularly to listen to the Cocteau Twins and walk around and try to come back to Earth a bit more pleasantly than how I’d left it. Loose Park the band has been a sort of sanctuary for me as well and possibly I think for Beckie and Mike, though you’d have to ask them to be sure. Mike’s basement is filled with friendly spiders and candles and gummy bears and guitarin’ good times, exactly the way a midwest basement should be. Mike said early on that he thought the songs in this set of 12 were “manic.” So here you are, 12 manic spazzings from Loose Park, the modern day indie def leppard. Thanks for listening to this album and for being a part of it with us. Special thanks to Alissa Myers for being so patiently accommodating, to Robert Rodriguez for the beautiful artwork and everyone who supports what we and all the artists in KC and everywhere else do to try and approach the weirdness with Love. Sincerely, Matthew, May 27 2014 (May 28 with this last revision…)]

[Loose Park play Czar Bar, July 18 with Molehill, Kangaroo Knife Fight, and Scott Schumann]

3. Cibo Matto – “10th Floor Ghost Girl”
from: Hotel Valentine / Chimera Music / February 14, 2014

10:14 – Underwriting

10:15 – a little bit country

4. Ruddy Swain – “Treasure of Love”
from: Ruddy Swain [EP] / Independent / November 13, 2011
[Ruddy Swain is David Regnier of Dead Voices and Lauren Krum of The Grisly Hand.]

[“Treasure Of Love” was written by J.p. Richardson, and George Jones. It was released as a single by George Jones on Mercury Records in 1958.]

[In 1968 country superstar George Jones witnessed a fight between Tammy Wynette and her husband Don Chapel. At Jones’s urging, Wynette and her daughters drove away with him. Wynette and Jones married Feb. 16, 1969, and Wynette’s 4th daughter, Georgette, was born in 1970. Jones and Wynette, were nicknamed the “President and First Lady” of country music, and they recorded a string of hit duets that seemed drawn directly from their volatile relationship, which resulted in their divorcing in 1975. Their classic recordings included “Two Story House,” “Golden Ring,” and the humorous “(We’re Not) The Jet Set” written by Bobby Braddock.]

5. George Jones and Tammy Wynette – “Something To Brag About”
from: George Jones and Tammy Wynette – Super Hits / Sony – BMG / April 23, 1995
[Originally from their November 13, 1971 release “We Go Together” on Epic records. It was Jones first record with Epic and his first with his new wife. The song was written by Bobby Braddock, and first recorded by Charlie Louvin and Melba Montgomery. Melba Montgomery recorded several country duets with George Jones in the 1960s.]

6. John Prine w/ Melba Montgomery – “Milwaukee Here I Come”
from: In Spite Of Ourselves / Oh Boy / 1999
[A big fan of George Jones, and country duets, John Prine re-recorded “(We’re Not) The Jet Set” with Iris Dement, for his 1999 Release In Spite of Ourselves, and invited one of George’s former duet partners, Melba Montgomery, to join him on another George Jones hit single written by Lee Fykes. Originally released in 1968, as a 7 inch vinyl release on Musicor Records, from George Jones & Brenda Carter. It became part of George and Tammy Wynette’s live shows.]

7. John Statz with Josh Harty – “Paradise”
from: 12 August / Money Wolf Music / February 18, 2014
[Written by John Prine. Recorded unrehearsed, live, with no edits, at Silo Sounds on the south side of Denver, on a free day between shows. John and Josh had played Denver the night before, and only had to drive as far as Fort Collins the next. Josh Harty is originally from North Dakota and John Statz is from Wisconsin.]

Bobby Womack died on June 27, 2014 at age 70. His passing was announced by a publicist at XL Recordings. Though the cause of his death is currently unknown, he suffered diabetes, prostate cancer, heart diseases, colon cancer, pneumonia and Alzheimer’s disease. Bobby Wopmack, was a singer songwriter musician who had a musical career that spanned over 50 years, working with Sam Cooke and Mos Def and Gorillaz. Womack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, long after he’d lost his fortune and his career to addiction.

According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website, Womack was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and sang gospel music at a young age, performing with his brothers in The Womack Brothers. Under the influence of gospel and R&B legend Sam Cooke, who signed the group to his personal label, Womack moved into secular music. In the early 1960s his group recorded “It’s All Over Now,” which was covered and by the Stones and became the band’s first number-one hit.

His songs have been recorded by multiple artists, and he played as a session musician in Memphis in the 1960s.

Musician, singer-songwriter and record producer, frontman of Blur and co-founder, vocalist and principal songwriter of Gorillaz, Damon Albarn and XL Recordings president Richard Russell helped Womack regain his career with 2012 comeback album “The Bravest Man in the Universe.” The album was a departure for Womack, full of electronic music and beats. But it was lauded by critics for a simple reason: That distinctive voice of his still brought chills.

“I don’t think he ever really thought that he would do anything again,” Albarn said of Womack in March. “Watching his rehabilitation and watching his ability to confront new material and new challenges was nothing short of miraculous at the time, and he still today continues to battle his demons and his illness. But he’s a beautiful person and when he opens his mouth and that voice comes out, it is something that is somehow touched by God.”

[According to Li, the album is the final installment in a trilogy chronicling “a woman in her twenties and her search for love and herself”, which began with her first two albums, Youth Novels (2008) and Wounded Rhymes (2011). After experiencing “the biggest breakup of her life”, Li moved from Sweden to Los Angeles, where she spent two-and-a-half years in writing I Never Learn. “I made no such plans to make an album. My first instinct was just to try to heal myself and to come back to some sort of life. And then I was so emotionally broken that I just started to write… I love writing, and it was so amazing to get lost in the process. I didn’t think that someone would ever hear it”, she told Billboard. During much of her time in California, Li listened to Van Morrison’s 1968 album Astral Weeks, Harry Nilsson demos, The Band and Dennis Wilson. She described I Never Learn as a collection of “power ballads for the broken”, adding that the album is “about me and the guilt and the shame and the hurt and the pride and the confusion of being a woman.]

A New Comedy/Musical – Midwest Premiere
WAITING IN THE WINGS
THUR JUNE 26 | 7:00PM
This star-studded romantic comedy and musical is one of the most delightful and charming films of the year. Two entertainers destined for the big time are mistakenly mismatched in a casting office and end up in two VERY different shows. Tony (Adam Huss), a beefy male stripper from New York, is erroneously cast in an Off-Broadway musical and needs to trade in his tear-away briefs for a tux and tap shoes…while Anthony (Jeffrey A. Johns), a naive musical theatre enthusiast from Montana, is cast in an All-Male Strip Show and forced to decide if he can put modesty aside to pay the rent. Hilarity ensues as they realize that “to make it” they need to learn some new tricks. Two dancers and two dreams makes for one very mixed up musical. Featuring Lee Meriwether, Shirley Jones, Sally Struthers & Christopher Atkins. It’s a treat for anyone who has ever dared to step on the stage. (You should go watch the trailer now!) Meet Writer/Producer/Actor Jeffrey A. Johns who will be in attendance at this premiere screening celebrating the courage to follow your dreams. An audience Q&A with Jeffrey follows.

TO BE TAKEI
FRI JUNE 27 | 7:00PM
A star’s trek for life, liberty and love. George Takei doesn’t shy away from digging into his remarkable career and personal life in this delightful and incisive biography. As a child forced into Japanese-American internment camps, the actor-turned-activist reveals the ways that racism affected him well into his early acting career. Even after landing the iconic role of Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek, Takei’s sharp eye, coupled with his wicked sense of humor, continued to challenge the status quo. Now at 76, Takei and his husband, have become the poster couple for marriage equality, highlighting homophobia through TV interviews and hilarious skits, many of which have gone viral and garnered widespread attention. Whether dishing on William Shatner or parodying comments of notable homophobes, Takei proves time and again why his presence in popular culture remains as fresh and necessary as ever.

THE 10 YEAR PLAN
SAT JUNE 28 | 7:00PM
Following on the success of his previous hits, IS IT JUST ME? and eCUPID, director J.C. Calciano is back with another sexy romantic comedy you’re sure to enjoy! Myles (Jack Turner) and Brody (Michael Adam Hamilton) are best friends with two very different ways of finding love. Check out the film’s trailer at our website then come out for a night of fun.

FIRST PERIOD
SAT JUNE 28 | 9:15PM
If John Waters were to direct a John Hughes film using the cast of “Strangers With Candy,” you’d get this hilariously twisted take on an 80’s high school movie. New girl Cassie and school outcast Maggie are easily the most unpopular girls at their high school. Together, they decide the way to win the hearts of cute boys and popular girls is to enter– and win–the annual Talent Show. But rivals Heather, Other Heather, and their popular boyfriends Dirk and Brett will stop at nothing to keep Cassie and Maggie the laughing stock of the school. It’s going to take courage, a make over, and maybe even a rap battle to beat them in true 80s style. It’s a fun, smart cast brimming with zany charm plus special appearances by camp classic favorites Cassandra Peterson and Judy Tenuta. This fun-filled, late night screening will hosted by some of Kansas City’s favorite local entertainers. See who’s coming at our website.

SUNDAY, June 29 – CENTERPIECE SUNDAY

DUAL
SUN JUNE 29 | 5:00PM
A charming story of an encounter between a lost tourist and a female bus driver late one night on the way from the airport. This colorful, funny and insightful film feels like a lesbian equivalent of “Before Sunset” as two young women wander the warm nighttime streets, talking, having fun and gradually coming under each other’s spell. As the pair talk more deeply about what they want from life. But despite that fact that they seem very similar, one is hiding a secret and the other is simply trying to find her place in the world. The charisma of two leads make DUAL so watchable. Beautifully shot, the perfectly fitting soundtrack by Danish female duo Monkey Cup Dress, whose song “Cold Heart” is lip-synched by the cast at the start of the film, helps set up the warm, whimsical and romantic nature of the film. The perfect choice for this year’s OUT HERE NOW Women’s Centerpiece Screening.

MY STRAIGHT SON
SUN JUNE 29 | 7:30PM
Diego, a young and successful photographer, lives in the glamorous but shallow and excessive world of fashion. A tragic accident turns his world upside down; his partner Fabrizio is now in a coma. Unexpectedly, and right at this inopportune time, Diego’s estranged son Armando shows up. Now, both of them have to adapt to each other; Armando to the unknown, homosexual world of his father, and Diego to the closed attitude of his teenage son. One father, one son. Both of them will need to fix their differences and everything depends on how you look at it. This remarkable Venezuelan film with its critically acclaimed script and the many notably funny and touching supporting acting performances – was the recent winner of the 2014 Goya Award for Best Spanish Language Foreign Film and our choice as this year’s Men’s Centerpiece Screening.

MONDAY, June 30

POWER EROTIC
MON JUNE 30 | 5:45PM

Thought provoking and controversial, sometimes unsettling, yet brutally honest in its approach, this film dares to shatter illusions and raise complex issues regarding gay male sexuality. With interviews from influential academics to sex symbols and everyone in between, we gain a range of perspectives into the maze of conflicting attitudes regarding masculinity, power and sexual behavior. The director encounters 15 gay men whose sexuality revolves around power, dominance and control. The camera voyeuristically captures their sexual interactions providing insightful conversations, some of which are captured after actual sexual encounters allowing unusual access to the deeper, psychological aspects of sexuality.

According to Hudson, the legend originated with a group of “middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach” who sent out joke invitations for their annual get-together. One year, the group invited its members to witness “the marriage of Rock Hudson & Jim Nabors,” at which Hudson would take the surname of Nabors’ most famous character, Gomer Pyle, becoming “Rock Pyle.” Those who failed to get the joke spread the rumor. Hudson was also gay but closeted, and because of the fear that one or both of them might be outed, Nabors & Hudson never spoke to each other again.]

A series of men gave short speeches, each one praising Ann-Margret and predicting success and stardom for the young actress. When it was Paul Lynde’s turn to speak, he began, “Well, I guess I’m the only one here who doesn’t want to fuck Ann-Margret.” In 1965, Lynde was involved in an accident in which a young actor, reputed to be his lover, fell to his death from the window of their hotel room in San Francisco’s Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The two had been drinking for hours before 24-year-old James “Bing” Davidson slipped and fell eight stories, an event witnessed by two policemen, yet the event was largely kept out of the press, thus saving Lynde’s career. Despite his campy television persona, Lynde never publicly came out as gay and the press generally refrained from commenting about it. In 1976, a People magazine article on Lynde featured him and Stan Finesmith; the latter was dubbed Lynde’s “suite mate” and “chauffeur-bodyguard.” In the 1970s, this was as close as the press would come to hinting at his sexuality.]

11:30 – Tribute to Larry Kramer.

If you believe theatre can change the world, it may be because you know of Larry Kramer.

American playwright, author, public health advocate, and LGBT rights activist, Larry Kramer was born June 25, 1935. He began his career rewriting scripts for Columbia Pictures, which led him to London where he worked with United Artists and earned an Academy Award nomination for the screenplay of “Women in Love” in 1969.

In 1980 and 1981 Larry Kramer began to witness many his friends becoming sick and dying from the spread of an unknown disease, that became known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). He co-founded the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, which has become the largest private organization to assist people living with AIDS in the world.

Larry Kramer co-founded the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) in 1987, a direct action, multi-faceted, protest organization credited with changing public health policy and perception of people living with AIDS, HIV and AIDS-related diseases.

Based on his own struggles, in the early years of the AIDS crisis, Larry Kramer wrote about his frustrations with our government’s lethargic response, to do anything to help. Larry Kramer was also frustrated by the gay community itself, criticizing gay men who he felt were in denial of what was killing them. From all of this came Larry Kramer’s nearly auto-biographical play, “The Normal Heart” that focused on the rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City between 1981 and 1984, as seen through the eyes of writer/activist Ned Weeks, a gay Jewish-American founder of a prominent HIV advocacy group. Ned was known and disliked for his loud, angry, public confrontations, in contrast to the calmer, more private strategies favored by his associates, friends, and closeted lover Felix Turner.

The Normal Heart was produced by Joesph Papp at The Public Theater in NYC in 1985, in a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run that starred Brad Davis in the role of Ned Weeks.

In Kansas City, no professional theatre would do this show. The Normal Heart was produced independently in the Summer of 1991, as the very first production of Actors & Artists Against AIDS, Directed by John McCrite, staged with a cast of professional actors, in the basement of Unity Temple on The Plaza, the production earned critical acclaim and $10,000.00 in ticket sales from 8 performances, all to benefit The Good Samaritan Project.

Later, the play was revived in Los Angeles and London and again Off-Broadway in 2004. The Normal Heart made it’s Broadway debut, in April 2011, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. This year The Normal Heart premiered as a feature film on HBO with Julia Roberts, Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer and Mark Ruffalo as Ned Weeks. The film of THE NORMAL HEART was directed and produced by Ryan Murphy, best known for creating the TV shows GLEE, The New Normal, and American Horror Story. Larry Kramer wrote the screenplay.

from: Purple Heart / Significant Other / 1988
[In partnership with Oscar winner Peter Allen and Marsha Melamet, Michael Callen wrote his most famous song, “Love Don’t Need a Reason”, which he sang frequently at gay pride and AIDS-related events around the country. Michael Callen (b. April 11, 1955) was a singer, songwriter, composer, author, and AIDS activist. He was a significant architect of the response to the AIDS crisis in the United States. First diagnosed with “Gay related immune deficiency” (GRID) in 1982, Callen quickly became a leader in the response to the epidemic. He was a founding member of the People With AIDS Self-Empowerment Movement among other organizations, and he testified before the President’s Commission on AIDS and both houses of the United States Congress. He was a founding member of the gay male a cappella singing group The Flirtations, with whom he recorded two albums. He also had a solo album, Purple Heart, which a review in The Advocate called “the most remarkable gay independent release of the past decade.” During the last year of his life, Callen recorded over 40 songs. On December 27, 1993, Michael Callen died of AIDS-related complications in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 38.]

from: Too Much Rock Single Series No. 003 / Too Much Rock / June 3, 2014

From Berwangermusic.com: “Josh Berwanger made a name for himself as a member of The Anniversary, a Kansas band that released two albums (2000’s Designing a Nervous Breakdown and 2002’s Your Majesty) and selling over 100,000 records before imploding in a breakup of Fleetwood Mac-style proportions while attempting to tour Japan. Undeterred, Berwanger put together a new band—a country-rock outfit called The Only Children–and would go on to release two criminally underrated records (2004’s Change of Living and 2007’s Keeper of Youth) before pulling the plug on that project and taking a job doing the next most logical thing possible– coaching high school basketball in Lawrence. For his 2013 release Strange Stains, Berwanger joined forces with old pal and original drummer for The Anniversary, Michael Hutcherson. “Josh and I met in 1996 while playing in local KC pop punk bands,” recalls Hutcherson, “I am honored to be making music with Josh again. For all that’s changed in our lives over the years, we’ve still got a symbiotic musical relationship. No questions, no egos, just rock & roll.”]
