11:41 – Jamie’s influences

Jamie Searle played four songs, in sequential order, that represent some of his musical influences.

16. Duke Ellington – “The Mooche”
from: Best of Duke Ellington / X5 Music Group / July 22, 2008
[“The Mooche,” made in 1928, is a piece that reflected Ellington’s love of New Orleans and had been played in many versions by 1952. (Ellington constantly remade his pieces, and they are thus examples of how an inventive jazz composer works. He personally wrote or co-wrote new arrangements, commissioned new arrangements, or, upon listening to the improvisations of his players, found fresh material that could enrich or reinterpret a familiar part of his repertoire.) On “The Mooche,” we hear the two colors that were essential to Ellington’s sound. There’s the clarinet, which Ellington never abandoned even though jazz orchestras usually set the instrument aside after the emergence of Charlie Parker in the middle ’40s. Then there is the equally important plunger-muted brass (trumpet, on this track) that also remained a fundamental element of his style. (From Slate.com By Stanley Crouch January 12, 2005, The Late Show).]

17. The Impressions – “Fool for You”

[4 piece Mood Rock band from Denton, Texas, made up of: Judson Valdez- Lead guitars, Lead vocals, backing vocals; Piper Johnson – Synths, Lead vocals, backing vocals; Chase Johnson – drums, samples, Backing vocals; Daniel Pelletier – Bass, backing vocals. When Judson Valdez and Chase Johnson started working together in October of 2012, they were playing as backing musicians for a mutual friend’s project. After only a couple of months playing together, they quickly realized that they shared creative similarities and decided to try writing music together. Along the way of writing the songs that would eventually become Chambers first album, they recruited Johnson’s sister Piper, stole their sound engineer, Daniel Pelletier, away to play bass to round out the band and became Chambers. Early on they realized that they all had strong but very different voices and instead of trying to conform their different styles to each other, made it into their strength. What has come out of this process is a collection of songs that features 3 different lead singers, complex arrangements of harmonies, and a variety of instruments and styles. Chambers has played with: Grimes, Cold War kids, Efterklang, Chelsea Wolfe, Tennis, Torres, Frontier Ruckus, and toured with Seryn.]

He was a gospel blues singer and guitarist. While the lyrics of his songs were usually religious, his music drew from both sacred and blues traditions and is distinguished by his slide guitar accompaniment and gravelly false-bass voice, with occasional use of a tenor voice.
