10:15 – Interview with Sarah Beth Mundy

Sarah Beth Mundy

Sarah Beth Mundy‘s writing is a blend of the intimate and the confessional. She is most known for the two years she devoted to KC’s Dear Diary series, where she performed for audiences her most cringe-inducing teenage diaries. Sarah Beth has also given spoken-word performance across multimedia collaborations, including the 2015 Art Sounds series event “As I See You,” and a multi-artist album currently in production titled “Muses and Mavericks,” curated by Kansas City musician Mark Lauer. Sarah Beth was also one of the writer/performers in our Wednesday MidDay Medley, live stage show at the recordBar, called: “A Story in A Song.” Sarah Beth is a part-time instructor in the English Department at UMKC, where she received her M.A. in English Literature in 2014.

Sarah Beth Mundy joins us to talk about her new monthly series, Hymen In Hysterics – Meditations on Mental Disorder, at The Outburst KC, 1715 Wyandotte, KCMO.

I first encountered Sarah Beth Mundy at Dear Diary, at The Fishtank Theatre space at 1715 Wyandotte, which is now called The Outburst KC and owned by Susanna Lee Lucky Deluxe. Sarah talked about feeling comfortable being back in the space where she first bravely shared her intimate and teenage diary entries to a room full of audience members. The intimacy of the space is often a good match for the intimacy of the material.

Sarah Beth Mundy, Thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Sarah Beth Mundy’s new monthly series, Hymen In Hysterics – Meditations on Mental Disorder, continues at The Outburst KC, 1715 Wyandotte, KCMO. The next showcase is Thursday, May 25, at 8:00 PM, featuring comedy, performance art, poetry, and storytelling, from Moe A. Barria, Laura Fred Michael, and Heath Poland.

7. John Moreland – “Lies I Chose To Believe”
from: Big Bad Luv / 4AD / May 5, 2017
[Tulsa, Oklahoma based singer-songwriter John Moreland was born June 22, 1985 in Longview, Texas. The son of Robert Lloyd Moreland and Connie May, Moreland’s father worked for Sunoco as an electrical engineer, and because of this job the family moved a lot. When he was a baby they moved to Northern Kentucky, across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio. Moreland credits his love for Cincinnati Reds to this time in Kentucky. When Moreland was 10 years old Moreland’s family moved from Boone County, Kentucky to Tulsa, Oklahoma and with the help of his father, started playing the guitar. When he was 12 he played with a kid he went to church with who wrote songs and inspired him to start writing songs “that made sense.” John grew up in a conservative Southern Baptist family. “From the time I was born up until about age 16, my entire worldview and all my opinions were pretty much solely influenced by the evangelical church. All the years since then have sort of been this slow process of figuring out where I stand now that I’m not an impressionable kid anymore. I feel like I’m done with that at this point, but it keeps showing up in songs. I guess that stuff stays in your psyche forever.” His “High on Tulsa Heat” was in our 115 Best Recordings of 2015.]

The band draws their influences from the origins of their families: Santiago, Panama, and Kansas City, Missouri, and Guadalajara, Mexico. The band is also involved in a music camp they created as a service to the neighborhood that inspired songs. One of the band’s key collaborators on the camp is Clint Velasquez, a gifted music educator with a huge heart for the community. He created a non-profit in Kansas City called Base Academy of Music (B.A.M.) in order to provide quality music education in the inner city at a fraction of the cost of what it would be elsewhere. (B.A.M.) makes starting to learn a musical instrument accessible and affordable for urban youth. The organization believes music education is a reason and a means to succeed and collaborates with local schools and community centers to offer both private lessons and afterschool group programs.]

10. Samantha Fish – “Chills & Fever”
from: Chills & Fever / Ruf Records / March 24, 2017
[Growing up in Kansas City, Samantha Fish switched from drums to guitar at the tender age of 15. She spent much of her time in local watering holes listening to visiting blues bands. Samantha caught the attention of Ruf Records who released her album, Girls with Guitars, which found her co-billed with Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde. That led to her forming her own trio and recording three more albums, Runaway (2011), Black Wind Howlin’ (2013) and Wild Heart (2015). She was awarded, Best Artist Debut at the 2012 Blues Music Awards in Memphis. For Chills & Fever, Fish traveled to Detroit to collaborate with members of the Detroit Cobras, a band popular in the Midwest punk/blues scene. The collaboration included Joe Mazzola on guitar, Steve Nawara on bass, Kenny Tudrick with Bob Mervak on keys, and Mark Levron and Travis Blotsky on trumpet and saxophone. The band covers songs from Jackie DeShannon, Jerry Ragavoy, Bert Berns and Allen Toussaint while also revisiting some earlier demos she cut along with producer Bobby Harlow.]

11. Big Freedia – “I Heard”
from: I Heard – Single / Queen Diva Music / February 23, 206
[Raised on Josephine Street in uptown New Orleans, Big Freedia, born Freddie Ross, was raised by his mother, a hairdresser, and stepfather, a truck driver for Coca-Cola. When Freddie was 15, the family moved to a more upscale neighborhood in New Orleans. Freddie, along with his brother Adam and sister Crystal Ross, were immersed in music at home by their mother, who often sang along to her Gladys Knight and Patty LaBelle records around the house. But it was the Baptist church choir where a young Freddie flourished. ”My mother made sure I never missed practice,” recalls Freedia. It’s no wonder that by the time he was 18, Freedia moved from member to director of the choir. Big Freedia is known as the Queen of Bounce, at the forefront of the Bounce rap movement (a subgenre of hip-hop born out of New Orleans and known for its call and response style and lightening speed booty-shaking dance). Though gay and proud, Big Freedia asserts that her (Freedia is a he but uses the feminine pronoun for her stage persona) sexuality has little to do with her music and rejects the term Sissy Bounce (the queer brand of Bounce). “All Bounce is Bounce,” he insists. “There’s no need to separate it out. All types of people—gay, straight, rich, poor, black, white come to my shows. People just wanna get out and shake their azzzz and have a good time!” And therein lies the beauty of Big Freedia: She can rock a pair of dangling gold earrings and light up a blunt and chop it up with the hardest rapper around. She’s not a gay artist, but rather an artist who happens to be gay. Big Freedia has gone from a local New Orleans phenomenon to a national one after appearing on the HBO series ‘Treme’ [as herself] and in 2010, she released her debut EP on Scion A/V Presents: Big Freedia, produced by NOLA producer BlaqNmilD. The EP featured notables “Excuse” and “Almost Famous; other fan-favorites include “Gin in my System” “Azz Everwhere” and “Y’all Get Back Now.” Shefollowed that up by releasing “Nah Who Mad” and “Booty Whop,” and she was featured on Spank Rock’s “Everything is Boring and Everyone is a Fucking Liar” LP, on the track “Nasty.” She was also featured on “Peanut Butter” with RuPaul. Freedia made her network television network debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! She appeared on “Last Call with Carson Daly,” FADERTV, PITCHFORK TV and has been lauded in press outlets such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Fader, RollingStone.com, SPIN, OffBeat, Chicago Tribune.]

[Big Freedia plays, recordBar, 1520 Grand, on Saturday, May 20, at 9:00 with Childish Adults.]

11:04 – Interview with Lovergurl

The Kansas City based 4-piece band, Lovergurl caught our ear with their synth pop sound and lyrics reflecting social and political messages with hip hop and punk elements. Band members include: Stephanie Bankston on keyboards & vocals, Brook Worlledge on drums & vocals, Heather Andrews on guitar & vocals, and Adam Speer on bass.

The band is getting ready to release their debut EP recording, “The President is A Sex Offender” and will play a special EP release show, this Friday, May 19, at 8:00 PM at recordBar, 1520 Grand, with The Bad Ideas and La Guerre.

Stephanie Bankston, Brook Worlledge, Heather Andrews, thanks for being on WMM

Lovergurl keyboardist and vocalist, Stephanie Bankston was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. She is a graduate of The University of Missouri. She moved abroad in her 20s, and lived in Seoul, Korea, where she played in a mostly female band called BaekMa (“White Horse”). Stephanie returned to Kansas City in the Fall 2015. She has been playing piano since she was 5 years old, and writing music since her teenge year. Stephanie has also been in various bands since college including” Stephanie’s musical influences include: M83, Passion Pit, Washed Out, LCD Soundsystem, and STRFKR.

Brook Worlledge, is 25 years old and is a Kansas City native. She is the band’s drummer and she sings and writes songs for the band. Brook is a defender of the proletariat. (The workers, working-class people, wage earners, the working classes, the common people, the lower classes, the masses, the rank and file, the third estate, the plebeians.) Brook’s influences range from the B52s, The Velvet Underground, The Brian Jonestown Massacre

Lovergurl guitarist and vocalist, Heather Andrews is also 25. She was born and raised in Rhode Island, and moved to Kansas City in 2011 and fell in love with the city. Heather Andrews influences include: Le Tigre, Best Coast, and Wolf Alice.

The band formed in 2016

Ron Knox of The Pitch wrote about the band in the August 16, 2016 edition saying, “Lovergurl takes aim at institutions, social structures and music scenes built by and seemingly for those who undeservedly wield power and privilege — men, rich people, white folks. It’s not rare subject matter; songs laser-focused on real-world issues are commonplace in hip-hop and punk. What’s unusual here is that Lovergurl leans on a sound that borders on straight-ahead pop. “Colorado Springs” couches its call for women’s safety, in the wake of the Planned Parenthood shootings in that city, within moody synths and a crooning vocal line. Another song, the yet-to-be-recorded “Prospect,” points out the irony in the name of the thoroughfare that runs through KC’s marginalized East Side, doing so with ease rather than by brute force.”

Lovergurl’s Electronic Press Kit contains this quote, “Lovergurl are a unique four-piece band whose music meets at the intersection pf Depache Mode and Salem 66 with a stop sign and crossing guard provided by Bikini Kill” – A dude on Facebook

Last year we fell in love with their song. “Colorado Springs” that the band put out as a single track, with three other songs, on the band’s Bandcamp page: http://www.lovergurl.bandcamp.com. This song was inspired by the real life event shooting and 6-hour siege at a Planned Parenthood Clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado, that left 3 people dead including a 44 year old policeman, and on Friday, November 27, 2015. This is one of 4 singles the band digitally released in 2016. Words and Music by Lovergurl.

None of the single tracks put out last year are on the new EP, which include 4 new songs.

“The President is A Sex Offender” is the name of their new EP.

The new songs contain lyrics about the personal and political, with great melodies and harmonies.

From their Press Kit:

“Kansas City based Lovergurl is the merciless political band you don’t know you needed.”

“Draped in tropical prints and pop melodies, the band have perfected their take-no-prisoners approach with a seamless blend of pop, surf-rock, and punk.”

“Armed with dance-enducing synth lines, moody guitar, and chorus like harmonies Lovergurl render your ears hard, and averting your eyes impossible.”

13. Lovergurl – “My Body”

Lovergurl keyboardist and vocalist, Stephanie Bankston told the Pitch, “I know we just want it to be fun, and also important,” she says. “The unifying thing is the message, it’s our attitude. I don’t know if we belong in the punk scene. We like to scream. We like to confront people. But I don’t know if we belong in that scene. I don’t know if we belong anywhere.”

But then I realized that moving to a new city and starting a new life takes time. And it was weird, because usually I just write, record, and put it out; no problem. But this time, I wrote them and they sat. When that happens, you really get to know the songs. [“Love Capture” features a duet with Alexis Taylor of the band Hot Chip. Lætitia Sadier was born May 6, 1968. She is a French musician best known as the singer of the band Stereolab. One of our mot favorite bands of all-time. Sadier was working as a nanny when she met guitarist Tim Gane at a gig in Paris during the late 1980s. Sadier was disillusioned with the rock scene in France, and soon moved to London to be with Gane and to pursue her career. She contributed vocals to Tim Gane’s band, McCarthy’s final albums and when McCarthy broke up in 1990, she and Gane immediately formed Stereolab. For the first incarnation of the band, they enlisted ex-Chills bassist Martin Kean, drummer Joe Dilworth and Gina Morris on backing vocals. Tim Gane has written the bulk of the music in Stereolab, Sadier is the main contributor of lyrics, written in both English and French. Sadier also plays keyboards, percussion, guitar and trombone. Stereo lab released 10 studio albums between 1992 and 2010 and released 7 special compilation albums. 10:30 – Interview with Johnny Hamil, Marco Pascolini, and Chad Meise

The last time we had a mini-reunion of members of the famous long-time Kansas City band Mr. Marco’s V7 on this radio show was on February 16, 2011 when Johnny Hamil, Marco Pascolini, Kent Burnham and Mike Stover joined us on to talk about the band’s new release, Sparkin’ Your Mama. It was later that year, in 2011, that classically trained bassist Johnny Hamil, who dreams his musical compositions in his sleep, noticed something revolutionary for his creative process when Johnny’s dream compositions included lyrics for the first time, and this set him on a new path to create, the GAWD project, which is not Mr. Marco’s V7 proper, but it is members of the Mr.Marco’s V7 from throughout the long history of the the band. The concept was to collaborate a vocal version of a composition with musical friends and then have various lineups of the V7 family interpret the material in different ways: CartoonNoirJazz, PunkFunkPolka, and FreeExoticaMiddleEastern. Add to this a new vinyl release from Mr. Marco’s V7 called, Man Of Action! II Vol. 1 Motion Picture Soundtrack, the band’s first vinyl release in their 20 year history, that includes several songs for their past recordings.

Johnny Hamil’s Mr. Marco’s V7 bandmates, Marco Pascolini and Chad Meise are also with us to discuss the whole Mr. Marcos V7 spectrum and how all these new and different GAV7D recordings fit together.

Last Tuesday night GAV7D with Kyle Dahlquist, Jeff Freling, Kent Burnham, & Christine Brebes on violin, played The Ship.

This Saturday, May 13, GAV7D with Mark Southerland, Kyle Dahlquist, Amado Espinosa, Charles Simms, & Christine Brebes on violin, will play recordBar, 1520 Grand Avenue, with Hi-Lux, and Gramps The Vamp.

Sunday, May 21, The GAV7D Project play The Dubliner.

Mr. Marco’s V7 was titled after Johnny Hamil’s determination to put Marco Pascolini’s name in the title of the band name and Marco’s randomly looking at a hair tonic’s bottle’s secret formula (V7).

Marco Pascolini is one half of The Country Duo, with Kasey Rausch, and off shoot of theor band The Naughty Pines, he also plays with The Dead Voices, Expassionates, The Brannock Device, and more.

Chad Meise is a master of sound and the studio and stage producing and engineering records for Mr. Marco’s V7, Hearts of Darkness, Expassionates, Rex Hobart, Mike Dillon, The Gaslights, Atlantic Fadeout, and The Country Duo, to name a few.

He re-adopted the name Black Francis in 2007. Frank Black’s third album with backing group the Catholics, was released by the Cooking Vinyl record label in 2001, and was produced by Nick Vincent. The album was generally met with favorable reviews. Though retaining the live-to-two-track method of recording of the previous two albums, this album found the band branching away from purely electric rock to incorporate acoustic guitar, pedal steel, and Rhodes Piano and Wurlitzer organ into the sonic template. The album was initially released by the What Are Records? label in 2001, and was reissued by SpinART in 2003.]

12. L7 – “Monster”
from: Bricks Are Heavy / Slash Records / April 14, 1992
[Los Angeles, California, based band, active from 1985 to 2001, and reunited in 2014. Due to their sound and image, they are often associated with the grunge movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s. L7 influenced many of the “riot grrrl” bands of the 1990s. L7 were formed by Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner in 1985. A year prior, Gardner had performed backing vocals on the Black Flag song “Slip It In”. The punk rock duo were joined by Jennifer Finch on bass guitar and Roy Koutsky on drums. Koutsky left shortly after and was briefly replaced by Anne Anderson in 1988. After Anderson quit the band, Demetra “Dee” Plakas became the permanent drummer. The band’s name derives from a 1950s slang phrase meaning “square”. The expression “L7” can be heard in the Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs song “Wooly Bully” (“Let’s not be L7, come and learn to dance…”), in the Rick James song “Bustin’ Out” (“L7- just a little too damn straight…”), in the Paul McCartney song “C Moon” (“I could be L7 and I’ll never get to heaven if I fill my head with glue”) and the Sex Pistols song “I Wanna Be Me” (“Don’t wanna be L7 I’ve had enough of this”).In 1991, the band formed Rock for Choice, a Pro-Choice women’s rights group that was supported by other prominent bands of that era including Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, and Rage Against the Machine. They left Y for Arista Records for 1984’s Jam Science, also recruiting drummer Martyn Barker. The album reached number 85 on the UK Albums Chart, and the single “Hand on my Heart” charted in the Top 60 in the UK. They recorded the 1985 album Oil & Gold on Arista (released on Island Records in the USA). Marsh left Shriekback during the recording of Oil & Gold and was replaced on guitar by Mike Cozzi, with Andrews taking over lead vocals. Shriekback also left Arista and signed to Island Records for whom they recorded the 1986 album Big Night Music, after which Allen left to rejoin Gang of Four, and Shriekback remained a collaborative centred on Andrews. Allen would also go on to play in King Swamp and The Elastic Purejoy. Marsh was also in the band Happyhead. After a further album in 1988, Go Bang!, the band split up. Andrews continued working on other projects before re-forming Shriekback in 1992, although after the single “The Bastard Sons of Enoch” and album Sacred City, there would be no further releases until 2000’s Naked Apes & Pond Life album. Both Allen and Marsh returned to the studio to contribute to the recording of Shriekback’s 2003 release Having a Moment. Since Having a Moment, Andrews has recorded three albums for Malicious Damage (Killing Joke’s original label) under the Shriekback moniker. from: When The Morning Greets You / Rad Cat Records / February 10, 2017
[Organ-led psych-pop band from Los Angeles with a trippy, lo-fi sound. Mr. Elevator and the Brain Hotel take their name from a Donovan lyric, and their melding of ’60s psych-pop and contemporary lo-fi underground made them a natural fit for California D.I.Y. empire Burger Records, who signed them in 2013. Their debut album, Nico and Her Psychedelic Subconscious, pitted trippy organ-led jams against tuneful pop in a way similar to ’60s-referencing West Coast acts like Foxygen and the Allah-Las.][Mr. Elevator & The Brain Hotel play Riot Room, 4048 Broadway at 11:30 pm for MOTM.]

5. Strand of Oaks – “Heal”
from: Goshen ’97 / Dead Oceans / June 24, 2014
[Strand of Oaks, is a project by songwriter and producer Timothy Showalter. Originally from Indiana, he currently resides in Philadelphia. His music classifies with the genres rock and folk music, or folk rock. After high school, Showalter moved from Indiana to Pennsylvania. While Showalter was on tour, his wife had an affair. Escaping his detrimental relationship, he moved back to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 2003. A couple months later, he came home to find his house burned down. Showalter spent his nights in hotels and on park benches with a borrowed guitar while working at an orthodox Jewish day school. Despite the turmoil, he was able to find inspiration to continue writing music that would later be released. Showalter’s first album Leave Ruin was released in 2009 on the Pennsylvania label La Société Expéditionnaire while touring and collaborating with Lou Rogai (Lewis & Clarke). Pope Killdragon is a self-released album by Showalter. The album was produced by audio engineer, Ben Vehorn. While holding onto Strand of Oak’s folky sound, Vehorn added in synthesizers and effects pedals to create an album with a sound that was unexplored territory for Showalter. In between tours, Showalter wrote music for what would become Dark Shores. He recorded this album with John Vanderslice who produced the songs. “Dark Shores” (2012) is the 2nd album self-released by Showalter. Once Showalter returned from tour, he got to work recording about 30 demos in three weeks. He wrote and recorded songs in his home studio which led to his last album, HEAL (2014). This was the first album Showalter released on Dead Oceans. On Christmas Day in 2013, Showalter and Sue were driving back to Philadelphia from Indiana when they hit a patch of ice and crashed into two semi trucks. Showalter suffered a concussion and broke every rib on his right side. The near-death experience gave Showalter a boldness during mixing sessions while creating HEAL with John Congleton, just days after the crash. Since being released, “HEAL” has received much acclaim being named one of the best albums released in 2014. Showalter has toured extensively in support of the album and opened for Jason Isbell, Iron and Wine, and Ryan Adams. Strand of Oaks made their television debut in 2014 appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers][Strand of Oaks play the 7th annual Middle of the Map Fest, Friday, May 5, at The Uptown Theatre, at 8:00 PM, opening for Grammy Award winner, Jason Isbell.]

6. Jason Isbell – “Stockholm”
from: Southeastern / Southeastern Records / June 11, 2013
[4th studio album by singer-songwriter Jason Isbell. Produced by David Cobb, the album was released to widespread critical acclaim. Initially set to be produced by Isbell’s friend and touring companion Ryan Adams, the album was recorded following a stint in rehab, with Isbell noting, “This time I want to remember it all.” The album was recorded without the full participation of Jason Isbell’s regular backing band The 400 Unit, with Isbell noting: “It really came to the nature of the songs more than anything else. It’s a very personal record for me. And I had gone into the studio with the intention of making more of a solo, acoustic album. But Dave [Cobb], the producer, and I both sort of got bored with that idea and we decided to bring a band in for some things.” The 400 Unit band members Chad Gamble and Derry deBorja appear on drums and keyboards, respectively.][Jason Isbell plays Middle of the Map, Friday, May 5, at The Uptown Theatre, at 9:15 PM.]

[Singer-songwriter-vaudeville-folk-troubadour, Nicholas St. James released his critically acclaimed debut album THEATRES in 2016. His music is described as “more of a throwback to Vaudeville than the Dust Bowl.” Music Blogger Brian Clifton wrote, “Nicholas St. James blends together old and new to create a sound as distinct as its stage show. St. James mixes folk, blues, vaudevillian drama, and country together.” Based in Lawrence, Kansas, by way of St. Louis, Missouri, Nicholas is an authentic Midwestern folk musician, and credits Tom Waits as an inspiration. Ed Danger, of American Roots Magazine, wrote, ”If Bob Dylan and Tom Waits were the same person, they’d write songs like Nicholas St. James. This guy can work a room as one man and a guitar better than many full bands. If you’re a fan of performance, soul and genuine subject content, you’ll love his set. You probably won’t be dancing as much as you’ll be captivated.” More information at: http://www.nicholasstjames.com]

[Nicholas St. James plays the Wednesday MidDay Medley 90.1 FM KKFI Day Party at Middle of The Map Fest, Saturday, May 6, at 2:00 PM, at The Brick, 1727 McGee, KCMO Crossroads.]

9. Ivory Black – “Tidal Waves” (Live)

IVØRY BLACK’s debut EP, Ready Get Set was released in June 2015, recorded and mastered by Larry Gann of Awestruck studios. Micah Burdick on guitar, Craig Kew on bass, and Lester Estelle, drummer for Kelly Clarkson, on drums.

Klaartje Van Lue is Ivory’s manager and she was the one who helped IVØRY find her way to KC. IVØRY has said that she saved her life.

Born in Peoria Illinois, in 1986, IVØRY BLACK, was Devin James Miclette, and has lived through many experiences in a journey that finds it’s way into the lyrics of IVØRY’s songs.

From IVØRY’s press materials: Growing up in a world where music was a way of self expressing oneself and turning to in times of trouble, it was inevitable that IVØRY would turn to it when waters were the roughest. “My parents listened to a lot of classics such as Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, The Rolling Stones, and Tom Petty just to name a few”, Ivory has said. One of which, when a child, Ivory almost burned out a Robbie Dupree single “Steal Away’’ due to the catchy rhythms and melody of the song. “I wasn’t really allowed to listen to newer things, ultimately cause of how conventional my parents really were.”

Spencer Brown, welcome back to Wednesday MidDay Medley

Rachel, Winnie, Trixie and Trampolina

From The Kinsey Sicks press materials: Humble Beginnings. The Kinsey Sicks began in 1993 as a group of friends who went to a Bette Midler concert in San Francisco dressed as the Andrews Sisters. Assuming they’d be among many drag queens, they found themselves to be the only ones (other than Bette, of course). They were approached that night to perform at an upcoming event. Their reply – “we don’t sing” – was quickly disproved when they realized that all of them had musical backgrounds. They began singing and harmonizing that night, and the seed for the Kinsey Sicks was planted.

It has been nearly 11 years since Spencer Brown first premiered his alter ego Daisy Buckët at Bar Natasha. Since then Daisy Buckët has helped to usher in a new generation of drag in Kansas City.

The Kinsey Sicks were formed in 1993, by original members: Ben Schatz (“Rachel”) is a Harvard-trained civil rights lawyer, former Director of the national Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, and one-time presidential advisor on HIV issues, who created the first national AIDS legal project and authored Clinton’s HIV policy during the 1992 presidential campaign, and Irwin Keller (“Winnie”) is a University of Chicago-trained lawyer and linguist and former director of the AIDS Legal Referral Panel of the San Francisco Bay Area, who authored Chicago’s gay rights ordinance, passed into law in 1989. In 2004, the Kinsey Sicks were joined by actor/singer/designer Jeff Manabat, who is responsible for Trixie’s inordinate glamour and soaring counter-tenor, as well as the entire group’s hot couture. Beginning in October of 2008, the Kinsey Sicks are joined by the hilarious and talented Spencer Brown (“Trampolina”), a Kansas City-based actor and singer, already known for his drag character Daisy Buckët (pronounced, of course, “bouquet”)

3. The Sleazebeats – “Smile” (LIVE)
from: The Sleazebeats – The Sleazebeats / Independent / Jan. 1, 2012

10:10 – Interview Beth Marshall and Nico Gray

One of the big reasons Big Bang Buffet show happened last night, was because of the tragic massacre at the gay night club Pulse, in Orlando Florida, June 12, where 49 people were murdered and 53 others were wounded, by one man, armed with a SIG Sauer MMCX semi-automatic rifle, and a 9mm Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol, all easy to obtain in a country that worships guns more greatly than they worship Jesus. The Orlando massacre shook the entire country, but for LGBTQIA folk, we were devastated. Especially because from 1990 to 1996 Big Bang Buffet produced hundreds of hours of programming, in a gay bar. So many of us “came out” at gay bars. Late Night Theatre currently is presented at a Gay Bar. We all know what a crowed gay bar, at 2:00 in the morning, looks like, and feels like.

Beth Marshall lives in Orlando. She knew people who were in Pulse that night. She has produced shows at Pulse. As the news of this tragedy filtered out, it was social media that connected us. On Facebook we shared our shock, and grief, and sadness In the hours following of this tragedy, one of our facebook threads, started with Beth and Amy Britain, who lives in Rochester Minnesota, with her wife, Dr. Sara Hocker who works at The Mayo Clinic. The thread was saying we should all get together and do a Big Bang Buffet show again, a reunion of sorts, Ron Megee jumped into the thread and encouraged the conversation. From that thread, last night happened. Our intention made real, just like every other Big Bang Buffet Show.

Beth Marshall (Core Member of Big Bang Buffett from 92-95) known for Hosting, Performance Art and her portrayal of Laurie Anne Normal in Big Bang Buffett World News Report is thrilled to be back for BlackSheep Rising. Beth is the Producing Artistic Director/CEO of her 10 year old theatre company in Orlando Florida- Beth Marshall Presents, the recent recipient of Orlando Weekly’s Top 14 People We Love and Orlando Sentinel’s Top 5 Most Fascinating People In Central Florida. Beth’s body of work includes Fringe Festivals Globally, Serving as The Producing Artistic Director of Orlando Fringe, National New Play Network Ambassador, The VP of Canadian Association of Fringe Fests and actor from award wining indy films like Sunlight Jr to cheesy reality tv like South Beach Tow- her award winning stage credits range from top regional AEA theaters to the divest of gay bars! KCMO forever has a piece of her heart!

Beth is here with Nico Gray who was the guest producer of last week’s Wednesday MidDay Medley, which seems like longer than a week ago.

Nico, last night you performed on stage for the first time in 20 years, you started the show, and you started with a very strong piece. Thank you for you brave and beautiful and difficult piece. How do you feel about last night?

Beth Marshall introduced the piece: I REMEMBER I’M A RAINBOW By Aradhana Tiwari, that show Directed for After Orlando: PlayFest: After Pulse

4. Kristie Stremel – “Orlando (Keep Dancing)”
from: Orlando (Keep Dancing) – Single / Stremeltone / June 16, 2016
[Written by: Kristie Stremel. 2016 was a difficult year. On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old security guard, killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in a hate crime inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Pulse was hosting Latin Night and most of the victims were Latino. About 320 people were inside the club, which was serving last call drinks at around 2:00 a.m. After arriving at the club by van, Omar Mateen approached the building on foot, armed with a SIG Sauer MCX semi-automatic rifle and a 9mm Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol and bypassed security and began shooting and taking hostages. After a three-hour standoff, he was shot and killed by Orlando Police Department officers. It was both the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter and the deadliest incident of violence against LGBT people in United States history. It was also the deadliest terrorist attack in the US since the 9 /11 attacks in 2001. Recorded and Mixed by Paul Malinowski at Massive Sound. Mastered by John Hobson. Kristie Stremel on vocals & guitar, Anna Cook on cello & backround vocals, Ryan McCall on piano & background vocals. Described as “Joan Jett & Tom Petty’s love child,” and armed with her guitar, fueled by coffee, and over 75 published songs, singer, songwriter, producer, rock & roll mom. The last track, “It’s Enough” was released early, as a video, featuring photos of couples in partnerships, relationships, marriages, unions, families. The video was Kristie’s response the the KS House of Representatives passing HD 2453 allowing business the right to refuse service to LGBT customers. In 2015 Kristie released, Wildflowers, her childrens book of song and poems with accompanying CD recording with contributions from Victor & Penny, Kelley Hunt, Ron Megee, Kasey Rausch and more.]

The KC based Punk Rock and Roll band, Red Kate has been rocking venues since 2007. In the review of their debut EP, The Pitch wrote, “Bassist and lead vocalist L. Ron Drunkard, (aka Shawn Saving) is a socialist activist by day, bellows like an Appalachian Roger Daltrey.”The band’s first full-length album, “When the Troubles Come” was released on Replay Records in 2013. Last year the band released their follow up full – length record, unamerican activities, on Kansas City’s coop record label, Black Site. Both releases were recorded and engineered by Duane Trower at Weights and Measures Soundlab. Red Kate includes bassist and lead vocalist L. Ron Drunkard, Andrew Whelan on drums, & vocals, Desmond Poirier on guitar & vocals, and most recently added Shaun Hamontree to the band on rhythm guitar.

Stiff Middle Fingers were formed in 2010 as a classic punk cover band playing songs by Black Flag, Minutemen, Ramones, Sex Pistols, and more. The band started writing their own songs and have shared the stage with Bomb the Music Industry!, Joyce Manor, Agent Orange, Peelander-Z, Radkey, and have earned a reputation as one of the midwest’s must-see punk bands. Lead vocalist TurdKing (aka Travis Arey) fronts the band with “the passion for achieving unity through the common self-loathing and anxiety of all people.” Travis is known for climbing all over the venue, working the entire room, and sometimes street, with his 75-foot mic cord. Stiff Middle Fingers include guitarist Aaron “Barry” Swenson (Podstar, Many Moods of Dad), drummer George Valyer (The Primetime Heroes), and bassist Doug Griffin (The Dead Sevens, Chris Aytes & the Good Ambition).

Red Kate and Stiff Middle Fingers are releasing a new split single containing 4 new songs. L. “Stiff Middle Fingers harness the angst and energy of early punk and the irreverent intelligence of early aughts Saddle Creek. The combination of these two elements makes their songs part-snarl and part-snark. Perfect for summertime skanking in the daytime or shaking the walls of any dive bar at night, Stiff Middle Fingers take all the frenetic energy of being dissatisfied with life after a few pots of coffee and directs at a single goal: making music that burns through the veins of their listeners.”

Red Kate and the Stiff Middle Fingers have joined forces to release a new Split 7″ Single.

Engineered by Duane Trower at Weights and Measures Soundlab in Kansas City.

The split 7″ is a follow-up to the band’s critically acclaimed sophomore LP, unamerican activities, released in 2016 on their coop label, Black Site.

With the election of an authoritarian narcissist to the White House and white supremacy again on the rise, this hard, fast and angry polemic on the current state of affairs has turned out to be unfortunately prescient.

BLACK SITE is a record label cooperative created by Kansas City musicians interested in supporting regional punk and rock bands release their recordings on a physical medium. With the world around us becoming a deluge of digital 1’s and 0’s, transient as a trust fund crust punk on a cross country excursion, tangible art is critical to maintaining connections to our past, our sense of place, and who we are as a people. Only WE can create the world we want to live in. Reciprocity and solidarity are the cornerstones of building long lasting, self-sustaining community power that pushes back against the commodification of culture. Music is not a business; Punk is not a brand, and DIY is not a lifestyle to be consumed. This is a way of life, and if we don’t hang together, we’ll surely hang alone.

Red Kate has been rocking venues since 2007. The band is bassist and lead vocalist L. Ron Drunkard, Andrew Whelan on drums, vocals; Desmond Poirier on guitar, vocals, and Shaun Hamontree on rhythm guitar.

Stiff Miffle Fingers feature lead vocalist TurdKing (Travis Arey), guitarist Aaron “Barry” Swenson (Podstar, Many Moods of Dad), drummer George Valyer (The Primetime Heroes), and bassist Doug Griffin (The Dead Sevens, Chris Aytes & the Good Ambition),

Brian Clifton, of Mills Record Company.com writes, “SMF as a live band is bristling and precise, while still maintaining an off-the-cuff quality, often marathoning through 15-song sets in under 30 minutes. ”

12. Radiohead — “House of Cards”
from: In Rainbows / XL Recordings / October 10, 2007
[English rock band from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, formed in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments), Ed O’Brien (guitar, backing vocals), Colin Greenwood (bass), and Phil Selway (drums, percussion, backing vocals). They have worked with producer Nigel Godrich and cover artist Stanley Donwood since 1994. After signing to EMI in 1991, Radiohead released their debut single “Creep” in 1992. It became a worldwide hit after the release of their debut album, Pablo Honey (1993). Their popularity and critical standing rose in the United Kingdom with the release of their second album, The Bends (1995). Radiohead’s third album, OK Computer (1997), propelled them to international fame; noted for its complex production and themes of modern alienation, it is often acclaimed as a landmark record of the 1990s and one of the best albums in popular music. The group’s next albums Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001), recorded simultaneously, marked a dramatic change in style, incorporating influences from experimental electronic music, 20th-century classical music, krautrock, and jazz. Despite initially dividing listeners, Kid A was later named the best album of the decade by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and the Times. Radiohead’s sixth album, Hail to the Thief (2003), mixed rock and electronic music with lyrics inspired by the War on Terror, and was the band’s final album for EMI. Their subsequent releases have pioneered alternative release platforms such as pay-what-you-want and BitTorrent. Radiohead self-released their seventh album, In Rainbows (2007), as a download for which customers could set their own price, to critical and chart success. Their eighth album, The King of Limbs (2011), an exploration of rhythm, was developed using extensive looping and sampling. Their ninth album, A Moon Shaped Pool (2016), prominently featured Jonny Greenwood’s orchestral arrangements.]

Nico is a former theatre actor, performance artist, writer, and is currently a marketing and advertising consultant. Rooted in KC, Nico grew up with radio. Nico Gray will also be featured in Big Bang Buffet’s “Black Sheep Rising,” Tuesday, April 11, at 8:00 at The Buffalo Room. 13. Roxy Music – “Grey Lagoons”
from: For Your Pleaure / Atco – Reprise / May 23, 1980
[the 2nd album by the English rock band Roxy Music, released by Island Records in 1973. It was their last to feature synthesiser and sound specialist Brian Eno, who would later gain acclaim as a solo artist and producer. The group was able to spend more studio time on this album than on their debut, combining strong song material by Bryan Ferry with more elaborate production treatments. For example, the song “In Every Dream Home a Heartache” (Ferry’s sinister ode to a blow-up doll) fades out in its closing section, only to fade back in again with all the instruments subjected to a pronounced phasing treatment. The title track fades out in an elaborate blend of tape loop effects. Brian Eno remarked that the eerie “The Bogus Man”, with lyrics about a sexual stalker, displayed similarities with contemporary material by the krautrock group Can. Of the more upbeat numbers on the album, “Do the Strand” and “Editions of You” were both based around insistent rhythms in the tradition of the band’s first single “Virginia Plain”. “Do the Strand” has been called the archetypal Roxy Music anthem, whilst “Editions of You” was notable for a series of ear-catching solos by Andy Mackay (sax), Eno (VCS3), and Phil Manzanera (guitar). Eno is very present in the final song from the album, “For Your Pleasure” making it unlike any other song on the album. The song ends with the voice of Judi Dench saying “You don’t ask. You don’t ask why” amid tapes of the opening vocals (‘Well, how are you?’) from “Chance Meeting” from the first Roxy Music album. A live recording of the song has been used in 1975 as a B-side to “Both Ends Burning”..]
