24 year old Calvin Arsenia returns to Wednesday MidDay Medley after most recently joining us in March. His 2014 EP, Moments, was in our Top Ten, of The 114 Best Recordings of 2014. Calvin Arsenia recently came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland. Standing at 6 foot 5 inches, Arsenia’s powerful vocals span a 3.5 octave range, while playing piano, guitar and harp. Calvin Arsenia has written, arranged and produced 5 EPs including Prose, his new 9-song collection, released February 3, 2015. Calvin Arsenia plays The Riot Room, August 17, at 8:00pm. Calvin Arsenia has been very busy, releasing a new EP, graduating from the the Artist Inc. program, playing piano in Christian Hankel’s Silver: A Noir Ballet, for KC Fringe Fest.

Last time Calvin was on the show, in March, he performed his song “Cardiac” live in our 90.1 FM Studios. Since then he haa been working on this song as a new recording, collaborating with Jamie Searle of My Brothers & Sisters, who has created new arrangements for the recording.

Last year, Mark Titus joined us to share music from the Pembroke Hill Glee Club of 1968, DMZ a Boston based punk band, and the KC Chorale in Kirkwood Hall. Mark Titus returns today to share musical selections inspired by a July 11, 2013, KC Star Preview feature written by Robert Trussell showcasing seven female performers of musical theatre.

Mark Titus has been involved in the video industry for more than 20 years. What started as videotaping family events led to the creation of Titus Video in 1985. Gradually Mark has expanded his focus to include performance art archiving, training videos, coach and highlight DVDs for high school, college, and professional sports.

Bill Sundahl is a musician and singer and songwriter who was part of the Pitch Music Award winning band It’s Over, the critically acclaimed band The Columns, he toured with The Gaslights, and he currently plays in the KC supergroup: The Starhaven Rounders. Bill Sundahl is the founder of Spice of Life Productions, creator of “The Donkey Show,” and founder and organizer of The Crossroads Music Festival, now in it’s 9th year. For 9 years Bill has joined us in September, on the Wednesday MidDay Medley to talk about the Crossroads Music Festival, and the great bands that are participating.

[Jamie Searle won critical acclaim as lead vocalist and songwriter for the band It’s Over who won a Pitch Music Award for Best Live Act. He left It’s Over to concentrate on his music education as a student of UMKC’s Conservatory of Music where he has immersed himself in musical theory, composition, harmonic structure, melody. Now out of school, Jamie is in the process of recording a full length release of material he has composed for a large ensemble of musicians. [Originally recorded and written by Depeche Mode from their 1982 release “Violator.” This was from Cash’s 4th album in the American series, (and his 87th overall) This is the last album released before his death in 2003. Produced by Rick Rubin who asked ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante to re-work an acoustic version of Martin Gore’s song, which featured a simple acoustic riff that stripped down the song to a blues style. With backing vocal assistance from: Fiona Apple, Nick Cave, and Don Henley. American IV was the final Cash album released during his lifetime. It was also his first non-compilation album to go gold (selling over 500,000 copies) in thirty years. Additionally, the album won “Album of the Year” award at the 2003 CMA Awards. It was certified Gold on 4/24/2003 and Platinum on 11/21/2003 by the R.I.A.A.]

For this recording the band is accompanied by a horn section consisting of Sex Mob’s Steven Bernstein, Jeff Coffin (of Dave Matthews and Bela Fleck fame), Mark Southerland (Snuff Jazz, Malachy Papers), Peter Apfelbaum, and former JFJO member Matt Leland. The album is dedicated to the victims of the 1921 Tulsa race riot, the largest race riot in United States history.
