2. The xx – “Sunset”

[English indie pop band, formed in London in 2008. The group released their debut album, xx in August 2009. In 2010, the band won the Mercury Music Prize for their debut album. The band met while studying at Elliott School, the same school that produced Hot Chip, and Four Tet. Oliver Sim and Romy Madley-Croft started the band as a duo when they were 15. Guitarist Baria Qureshi joined once they began performing in 2005, with Jamie Smith joining a year after.]

3. Xiu Xiu – “Beauty Towne”

[originally from San Jose, California. The band is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart, who has been its only constant member since its inception in 2002. His current bandmate is Angela Seo. The band’s name is taken from the 1998 Chinese film Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl.]

4. The Hearts of Darkness – “Standing On The Corner”

[The 15 piece ensemble welcomed 6 additional musicians to record “Shelf Life” their 2nd full-length release, 2 years in the making. Recorded live at the Cooler Studio in Kansas City, Kansas, with Chad Meise, and mastered by Collin Jordan at the Boiler Room in Chicago, using both vintage analog and modern digital technologies. The album will be released on CD and as a limited edition collectible vinyl LP at local music stores, and also available on iTunes. [Based on their hit musical, “ELECTILE DYSFUNCTION: THE KINSEY SICKS FOR PRESIDENT,” The Kinsey Sicks were formed in 1993, by original members: Ben Schatz (“Rachel”) is a Harvard-trained civil rights lawyer, former Director of the national Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, and one-time presidential advisor on HIV issues, who created the first national AIDS legal project and authored Clinton’s HIV policy during the 1992 presidential campaign, and Irwin Keller (“Winnie”) is a University of Chicago-trained lawyer and linguist and former director of the AIDS Legal Referral Panel of the San Francisco Bay Area, who authored Chicago’s gay rights ordinance, passed into law in 1989. In 2004, the Kinsey Sicks were joined by actor/singer/designer Jeff Manabat, who is responsible for Trixie’s inordinate glamour and soaring counter-tenor, as well as the entire group’s hot couture. Beginning in October of 2008, the Kinsey Sicks are joined by the hilarious and talented Spencer Brown (“Trampolina”), a Kansas City-based actor and singer, already known for his drag character Daisy Buckët (pronounced, of course, “bouquet”).]

[Schwervon! is a two piece rock band. Nan plays drums and Matt plays guitar and they both sing. They lived in NYC for 15 years and have just relocated to Kansas City. Last year they opened for both The Vaselines and Belle & Sebastian. They recently recorded with Memphis-based engineer Doug Easley (Pavement, Sonic Youth, Cat Power) their new release: “Courage” will be released September 28.]

[Mentored by the great Bobby Watson at the UMKC, trumpeter Hermon Mehari, saxophonist William Sanders, pianist John Brewer, bassist Ben Leifer, and drummer Ryan Lee were the winners of the 2008 Origin Records / Gene Harris Jazz Festival Competition, beating out 10 other very original groups from across the country, the quintet opened for Roy Haynes’ ‘Birds of a Feather’ band at the Gene Harris Jazz Festival and were awarded a deal to record this album of original music. The DIVERSE Trio consisting of Hermon Mehari (trumpet), Ryan Lee (drums), and Ben Leifer (bass) plays all over KC playing a mix of original music and standards, as well as other types of music that have inspired us in the past year. The Midwest Music Foundation presents the release of Midwestern Audio Vol. 1, September 23rd. This is a two-CD collection of musicians from Kansas City and surrounding areas. The compilation was assembled by Brenton Cook of Midwest Music Foundation. The compilation will first be available to the public on Sunday, September 23rd, 7pm, at recordBar (1020 Westport Road, KCMO). The recordBar will be hosting the CD release party, which will feature six artists appearing on the compilation. The lineup includes Gemini Revolution, Reach (with jazz act Diverse), Grand Marquis, Antennas Up, and Everyday/Everynight. Brenton Cook joins us Live from Montreal where he is attending the Pop Montreal Festival.

The compilation will also be available for digital download after Monday, September 24th at 12:00pm at: music.midwestmusicfound.org

10:15 – Interview with Philip Hooser & Heidi Van

“The Woman Performance” is being presented at The Fishtank Performance Studio, Friday, June 1 thru Monday, June 4. The show was conceived and performed by Philip blue owl Hooser who portrays nearly 100 characters, all women, with the help of quite a few hats. Heidi Van, winner of the 2012 Charlotte Street Performative Fellowship Award, serves as Director of this one man tribute to the original 1939 film, “The Women,”

Philip’s show was originally staged at Late Night Theatre in 2004. Philip talked about when he first discovered the film and first decided to interpret and pay tribute to this film.

The TCM one-line synopsis of the original 1939 film, “The Women” – A happily married woman lets her catty friends talk her into divorce when her husband strays.

The film was directed by George Cukor and based on Clare Boothe Luce’s play of the same name, and continued the play’s all-female tradition with the entire cast of more than 130 speaking roles as female. Set in the glamorous Manhattan apartments of high society.

The film was a success. It starred Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine, Butterfly McQueen, and Hedda Hopper. Crawford has one of her best roles as bitchy homewrecker.

Since releasing their EP last year, Spirit is The Spirit, has been busy working on new music, making a video and planning to tour. This 6-piece band includes: Austen Malone, Noah Compo, Wayne Zimmerman, Josh Landau, Brook Partain, and Danny Bowersox are just hours away from their Kickstarter campaign to acquire a van to begin to tour across the country, and outer space!

The band was formed in 2010 in Lawrence, formerly known as Seafarer

“Mother Mountain” is the band’s self-released 5-song [EP] and was part of our 111 Best Recordings of 2011, The EP received critical acclaim from all of the local music press.

Their music has been described as ethereal, lavish, dreamy, supernal, soothing, radiant.

The band is currently working to release a debut full length recording later this year through The Record Machine. “Pillows” is one of the new songs.

[6th studio album from Russian–American alternative singer-songwriter Regina Spektor. On November 21, 2011, recorded in Los Angeles during the summer of 2011 the album is a collection of new material along with the very first studio recordings of several of Spektor’s older live songs. The album’s second single, “Don’t Leave Me (Ne me quitte pas)” is a song originally from Spektor’s 2002 album Songs.]

[The single from their 2nd full length released of the Denver based band was produced by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys for the indie pop band from Denver made up of husband-and-wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley. The couple met each other while studying philosophy in college, and started the band after they got back from a seven-month sailing expedition down the Eastern Atlantic Seaboard.]

10. Caul – “A Clear Eye Loves The Shadows As Well”
from: Let The Stars Assume The Whole of The Night / Hypnos / March 29 2012
[the 12th full length album from Caul aka Brett Smith, a prolific musician based in Baldwin City, Kansas, who has been releasing music since 1996 on various electronica labels. Caul began in 1993, while he was playing guitar in John Bergin’s band Trust Obey. This release came out this year and Caul is already working on his next two releases. Caul’s music is used in the film “My Friend Mott-ly.”]

11:15 – Interview with Chris Snipes

Chris Snipes is Director of the film, “My Friend Mott-ly” which is making its premiere, Saturday, June 2, at 6:30 pm, at The Screenland Crossroads, 1656 Washington, in KCMO. “My Friend Mott-ly” is a testament about the life of KC artist Lee Tisdale, a.k.a. Mott-ly. The film chronicles his life and the impact he had on those who knew him, in the Kansas City art/punk scene in the late 80s/early 90s, and as an art pioneer who opened one of the first galleries in the Crossroads.

Chris Snipes talked about how he started to actually make this film.

Grafitti: “Mott-ly has one leg” was for many years, spray painted on the building that is now the home of the Bloch Art Space of the Art Institute near 43rd and Walnut.

Mott-ly was known for his amazing Zines like: “Corn Rage”

Tom Deatherage of The Late Show is one of the people in your film telling their stories about Mott-Ly, along with family members and close friends.

12. John Velghe – “Always a Friend”
from: Bindle Songs / released 27 April 2011
[This is the 1st of a few recordings John is doong called “Bindle Songs” (songs played on tiny instruments). Not all toy instruments, but small instruments that you can carry on your person, in your backpack or in a bindle. John recently got a ukelele and learned three-and-a-half chords on it. He wanted to learn a little bit more about how to record it so I recorded this version of “Always a Friend” by his friend Alejandro Escovedo. Written by Alejandro Escovedo and Chuck Prophet. All proceeds from the digital sales at mountwittenbergorca.com go to the National Geographic Society for the project of creating international marine protected areas. Mount Wittenberg is located at Point Reyes National Seashore in California. The inspiration for the EP came when Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors saw a pod of whales off the coast while hiking at that spot.]

Escovedo began performing in the punk band The Nuns. In 2003, after having lived with Hepatitis-C for many years, Escovedo fell critically ill. Last year when Heidi Van, David Wayne Reed and Bess Wallerstein joined heir comedic forces to create the new play, “White Nose Christmas” it ended up winning them a “Best of Kansas City Award” as Best Stocking Stuffer from The Pitch. The show was a hilarious send up, of reality TV personalities that told the story of Brindsay Cardilton, “a coke snorting celebrity, famous for being famous.” This year the three actor, producer, directors have joined forces once again to deliver their newest collaborative holiday show called “Bump” which continues the journey of Brindsay, just out of jail and rehab, who finds herself pregnant. In real life Heidi Van is 8 months pregnant and due to have her baby in just a few weeks. Grammy Nominated Greg Brown is one of the most repected singer songwriters working in music today. He started singing professionally at the age of 18 organizing early folk concerts in New York City. Portland, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In the 1980s, he worked nd toured extensively wiht A Prairie Home Companion. He also founded his own record label, named Red House Records after a home in which he lived in Iowa.

Greg Brown has release over 30 recordings and has allowed much of his music to be used to raise funds and awareness for environmental and social causes. His songs have been performed by Willie Nelson, Jack Johnson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Iris DeMent and Joan Baez.

Greg Brown will be in concert in a rare KC performance with his wife Iris deMent, on Friday night, 11-11-11 at The Folly Theatre to honor and benefit United Inner City Services home of St. Mark Child and Family Development Center. Also with us was Rev. Sam Mann, who last year retired after 40 years of serving as pastor of St. Mark Church at 1101 Euclid Avenue, in Kansas City’s East Side. Rev. Mann grew up in Alabama and came to Kansas City in the late 1960s. He has spent his lifetime working for civil rights and social justice issues. Rev. Mann is a father and grand father and friend to so many who have been inspired by his words and his work. He has dedicated his life to make the world a better place for children and families, working tirelessly to feed the hungry, house the poor, offer education and training, and help minority entrepreneurs open businesses. He helped organize the first National Urban Peace and Justice Summit to address gang violence. In 2004 the state-of -the art St. Mark Early Childhood and development Cents was completed at the cost of 5 Million dollars and in retirement sam continues to organize benefits to retire the mortgage on this amazing facility created to serve children and families in need.

In the 2002 Greg and Iris did a benefit concert for The Friends of Community Radio at Unity Temple on The Plaza. Later that year, on November 21, 2002 Greg married the singer-songwriter Iris DeMent in a private ceremony in the office of Rev. Sam Mann of St. Mark Church here in KC.

Greg Brown’s mother played electric guitar, his grandfather played banjo, and his father was an electrician who became a Pentecostal minister in Earlville, Iowa, and later converted to the Baha’i Faith.

Greg has three children: Constance, Zoe, and Pieta, from his first marriage, who are also musicians. Pieta Brown, has released several albums of her own and tours actively as of 2007.
