Since Calvin Arsenia came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, he has released his EP, Moments, in 2014, and his EP Prose in 2015, and his Folk Alliance exclusive EP Catastrophe in 2016. He has played Folk Alliance International, Kansas City Fringe Fest, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, The Kauffman Center For The Performing Arts. Standing at 6 foot 5 inches, Arsenia’s powerful vocals span a 3.5 octave range, while playing piano, bango, guitar and harp Calvin teaches music to elementary students. Since May of 2014 Bill Sundahl has served as 90.1 FM KKFI’s Special Events, Volunteer, Underwriting Coordinator. Prior to that he was owner of Spice of Life Productions. For more than a decade he has produced the Crossroads Music Fest, the Spring Dance, The Donkey Show, and many more great Kansas City events. He is also a working musician, playing bass and singing in the Starhaven Rounders. Bill was honored with Urban Hero Award from the Kansas City Downtown Council in 2007 and has won two Pitch Music Awards. He’s also on the Advisory Board of the Midwest Music Foundation. Bill joins us today to share details about KKFI Collaborations, Friday June 30, at 8:00 PM at The Folly Theatre.

A night of innovative original music, film, and dance. A genuine theatrical experience. Seven sets of arts organizations will perform a series of original, spectacular, and unique collaborative artistic creations, live on the world famous Folly Theater stage. KKFI will also record the performances and for an Audio CD to use in future fundraising efforts.

The night begins with a VIP Reception in the Folly Board Room with appetizers and cocktails between 6pm and 7pm. The On-Stage portion of the night will begin at 7pm with a panel discussion on the nature of collaboration in todays artistic world. Collaborative Artist Performances between 8pm to 10pm with an Intermission at 9pm.

Kansas City based producer, and musician and keyboard player, Desmond Mason is originally from Los Angeles. He went to Southeast High school and studied History and Higher Education at UMKC. Desmond has worked at Park University, and the American Jazz Museum. Desmond is a versatile performer and composer, who desribes his music as “firmly rooted in KC Kazz, R & B, gospel, and hip-hop music and strives to be something that the audience can feel in their spirit.”

Derick Cunigan is a singer, songwriter who is originally from St. Louis, Missouri. He studied broadcasting at Northwest Missouri State University. He has worked for KMBC Channel 9, Steel City Media and KBEQ, KFKF, and KCTV Channel 5.

Together Desmond and Derick are Soul Revival an R&B/Soul duo based in Kansas City. Their debut EP, Back To Love was just released on June 2, 2017. More information at http://www.soulrevivalmusic.com

Singer songwriter Ivøry Black has been busy this year playing Crossroads Music festival, The Middle of the Map Festival, The Westport Roots Festival, the KCPT Screening of “Real Boy” at The Kansas City Publlic Library. Ivøry Black plays the Kauffman Stadium, July 1, before the 1:15pm Royals home game. Born in 1986 in Peoria Illinois, and given up for adoption at the age of four, it was difficult to find trust in people after living with eight different foster families. Running away at 15, Ivøry moved from Indiana to Oklahoma and eventually ended up in Seattle. In 2011 Ivøry moved to Kansas City, and has became a part of new family. On June 23, 2015, Ivory released the debut EP, “Ready Get Set.” Ivøry is now currently in the process of writng and recording a debut full-length album, to be released in early 2018. Ivøry Black joins us to share new songs including, “Family Tables” that will be released as a single in August. Ivøry Black plays Revolution Records, on Friday July 7. Ivøry Black played the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library, on June 10th taking the stage for the KCPT screening of a documentary called “Real Boy” about a young man’s transition from female to male. The subject of the film, 19 year old Bennett Wallace is a talented musician and finds his voice and comfort in music.

Ivøry Black’s debut EP, Ready Get Set was released in June 2015, recorded and mastered by Larry Gann of Awestruck studios. Micah Burdick on guitar, Craig Kew on bass, and Lester Estelle, drummer for Kelly Clarkson, on drums for Ivory ‘s EP.

The new album is being recorded in Ivøry’s home studio, a dream made possible by the management skills of Klaartje Van Lue, who took the opportunity to guide Ivory’s career.

Klaartje Van Lue is Ivory’s manager and she was the one who helped IVØRY find her way to KC.

Anna Selle is a very busy person. She is staff Photographer at Playlistplay, she works for for The Record Machine, and currently serves as Program Associate at The Literacy Lab. She has worked for the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in the educational department and volunteered with Americorps, Anna Selle grew up in Kansas City and studied English at Truman State University. Anna Selle is the co-founder Editor at HearQueer, a new print + digital publication featuring interviews, reviews, stories about queer identifying musicians with portions of proceeds going to local organizations working to protect and advocate for the queer community.

Anna has brought along her friend and co-founder of HearQueer, Bill Dickey who serves as Managing Editor of Hear Queer. HearQueer launches on June 30, at Mills Record Company featuring Erica Joy and Rachel Mallin & the Wild Type.

Anna Selle (editor-in-chief), Kevin Briody (art director), and Bill Dickey (managing editor). wanted to have the first issue of Hear Queer launched during “Pride Month.”

Kevin Briody, is the guitarist for emo-rock band Mess.

My friend Amy Farrand, who is the leader of the band Amy Farrand and The Like, and also plays drums for Sister Mary Rotten Crotch, and I have talked on this radio show about how, as LGBT people, we feel more accepted in the Kansas City Music Community than in the Kansas City Gay Community. Kansas City has an incredible diverse LGBTQIA Community, that lives all over the metro region, and is served by a fairly Gay friendly community, of gay bars, welcoming churches, and music and arts and theatre scene, with openly gay people being elected to our State Senate and House of Representatives and City Council.”

[Tulsa, Oklahoma based singer-songwriter John Moreland was born June 22, 1985 in Longview, Texas. The son of Robert Lloyd Moreland and Connie May, Moreland’s father worked for Sunoco as an electrical engineer, and because of this job the family moved a lot. When he was a baby they moved to Northern Kentucky, across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio. Moreland credits his love for Cincinnati Reds to this time in Kentucky. When Moreland was 10 years old Moreland’s family moved from Boone County, Kentucky to Tulsa, Oklahoma and, with the help of his father, started playing the guitar. When he was 12 he started playing with a kid he went to church with who wrote songs and inspired him to start writing songs “that made sense.” Moreland grew up in a conservative Southern Baptist family. “From the time I was born up until about age 16, my entire worldview and all my opinions were pretty much solely influenced by the evangelical church. All the years since then have sort of been this slow process of figuring out where I stand now that I’m not an impressionable kid anymore. I feel like I’m done with that at this point, but it keeps showing up in songs. I guess that stuff stays in your psyche forever.”]

Stage & screen actor, Michael McQuary a master impressionist, joined us to share his unique take on the legendary monsters of film and the brightest stars of Hollywood’s golden age. Michael is the creator of the award winning one-man shows in New York City including: Matinee Idol, Man of 1001 Faces, Crystal Allan Strikes Back, My Own Space and most recently, for last year’s KC Fringe Festival “I’m Hollywood.” Michael McQuary is also a visual artist of personal portraits and life captures done with china ink that are collected internationally and he is the founder and designer for YourPowerSign.com where he creates art works of metal. Currently Michael is seen in multiple film shorts promoting the OM Film Festival and he is the star of the upcoming Mile Deep Films short film, “Corvalo.”

Michael McQuary was born and raised in Portland, Oregon in the 1960s.

Michael told us that, as a child, he had to “learn the world sideways.” “Movies took care of him, as a child.”

Michael remembers, at the age of 4, spellbound by Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula. “Look how he holds his cape!” he told his mother, and from then on, Michael’s childhood was focused on his own creative world.

Michael would do imitations of, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Katherine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, and Cab Calloway

Arriving in New York at the age of 18, Michael was enrolled in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Michael found himself drawn to the burgeoning downtown and nightclub scene, performing at the legendary Boy Bar, Bon Soir and Trocadero.

It was there that he conceived and developed Matinee Idol, a one-man cinematic collage of classic films ranging from Sunset Boulevard to Clash of the Titans.

Veteran New York cabaret impresario Erv Raible invited McQuary to bring his show to Eighty-Eights, where Michael worked his magic for five years, Playing dozens of characters and earning two 1988 Back Stage Bistro Awards for Outstanding Cabaret Debut and Best Characterization Show. This was followed by four consecutive MAC nominations.

Access cable icon Miss Sybil Bruncheon (a/k/a John Burke) invited McQuary to perform in his stage show Café Berlin, where Michael’s roles ranged from Marlene Dietrich to Cab Calloway and Bela Lugosi.

Michael’s cabaret shows also played at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theatre, the Duplex, and Judy’s Chelsea.

Michael was an acting student at the famous HB Studio in NYC, founded by Herbert Berghof in 1945 and located in Greenwich Village, New York City. In 1948, Uta Hagen joined the Studio as Berghof’s artistic partner, and the two wed ten years later. Her master classes led to the writing of her books Respect for Acting and A Challenge for the Actor.

It was at the HB Studio where Michael was discovered and cast in the revival of “The Royal Hunt of The Sun.”

After spending much of his career bringing movies to life on stage, Michael began working in film bringing his theatrical style to film.

Director Marc Briatack of Dynamarc Films saw Michael perform at the Public and began photographing him in many of his elaborate disguises. They were excited with the results and began to plan an internet serial: Fu Manchu’s Weapon of Evil.

Michael’s life in NYC gave him the opportunity to meet many people in show business including: Fred Schneider of the B-52s, Catherine Deneuve, Sonny Bono, Rachel Welch.

Michael’s NYC apartment was filmed by CNN and was styled like a mysterious residence in a forbidden city. Part living space part movie set.

Michael moved to Kansas City a couple of Halloweens ago. Last year he brought his one man show, “I’m Hollywood” to the KC Fringe Festival.

Michael has been embraced by the area film community, appearing in multiple short promotional pieces to the OM film festival.

Michael has been part of photographic shoots with Ron Megee, and Philip Hooser.

Michael is also the star of the upcoming Mile Deep Films short film, “Corvalo,” directed by Anthony Ladeish.

Michael McQuary is also a visual artist of personal portraits and life captures done with china ink that are collected internationally.

Michael is also and the founder and designer for YourPowerSign.com where he creates real jewelry from precious metals that are one of a kind works of art.

Michael will also be seen on KSHB TV with Joel Nichols, Saturday, August 8, at Midnight, in an interview.

Riala is three piece Kansas City based band was formed in May of 2013 by Nicholas Turner on voice & guitar, Kalo Hoyle on bass, and Morgan Greenwood on drums. The band’s debut EP, Be Here | Be There, was recorded, mixed and mastered by Joel Nanos at Element Recording Studios.
