2. Prince & The Revolution– “America”
   from: Around The World In A Day / NPG Records / April 22, 1985
   [Around the World in a Day is the seventh studio album by American recording artist Prince, and the second release on which his backing band the Revolution is billed. It was released on April 22, 1985, by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records. Departing somewhat from the commercial sound of his previous release, the massively successful Purple Rain (1984), the album instead saw Prince experimenting with psychedelic styles and more opulent textures. In compliance with Prince’s wishes, the record company released the album with minimal publicity, withholding accompanying singles until almost a month after the album’s release. // Around the World in a Day was released to mixed reception among crossover audiences after the success of Purple Rain, though it nonetheless sold relatively well and became Prince and the Revolution’s second number-one album on the Billboard 200. Two of its four singles reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100: “Raspberry Beret” and “Pop Life”. Following Prince’s death, “Raspberry Beret” re-charted on the Billboard Hot 100 as a top 40 hit, reaching number 33. Around the World in a Day was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on July 2, 1985. // Recording for Around the World in a Day was begun in sessions dating back before that of Purple Rain. Following six months of touring behind that bestselling album, Prince returned to recording. An initial inspiration for the album’s sound came in the form of a demo, recorded by David Coleman, the brother of Revolution band member Lisa Coleman, which would ultimately become the title track. // The album pursued a dense, psychedelic style that made use of unconventional instruments and cryptic lyrics. Its sound and album cover painting by Doug Henders (artist) drew numerous comparisons to the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Prince spoke in an interview about the album’s sound and cover, denying inspiration from the Beatles: // “The influence wasn’t the Beatles. They were great for what they did, but I don’t know how that would hang today. The cover art came about because I thought people were tired of looking at me. Who wants another picture of him? I would only want so many pictures of my woman, then I would want the real thing. What would be a little more happening than just another picture would be if there was some way I could materialize in people’s cribs when they play the record. I don’t mind [the album being called psychedelic], because that was the only period in recent history that delivered songs and colors. Led Zeppelin, for example, would make you feel differently on each song.” // Despite the muted promotion and its less commercial sound, the album still had two American top 10 hits, and went double platinum. Initial critical reception was mixed, but retrospective reviews are positive. // According to Prince, George Clinton was a fan of the album. ” Greg Tate of Spin wrote, “Perhaps it’s inevitable, given a career built as much on calculated mindfucking as mindblowing music, that Prince would choose to follow the best album of his career with the most bewildering, if not the worst.” // In a positive retrospective review for Pitchfork, Alan Light described the album as “a brave and deeply personal project, exploring sounds and ideas that were almost shocking coming from a pop icon at his peak.” Simon Price wrote for The Guardian that the album “always sounds better than you think it will, when you revisit.”]

3. Janelle Monáe – “Turntables”

   [All In: The Fight for Democracy is a 2020 American documentary film directed and produced by Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés. The film revolves around voter suppression. Stacey Abrams worked with Garbus and Cortés on the film. It was released in a limited theatrical release on September 9, 2020, followed by digital streaming on Prime Video on September 18, 2020, by Amazon Studios. Originally, Abrams, a Georgia state representative, did not intend to be part of the film; eventually she agreed to include her gubernatorial race as part of the story. // Janelle Monáe Robinson was born on December 1, 1985 in Kansas City, Kansas and was raised in a working-class community of Kansas City, Quindaro. Her mother, Janet, worked as a janitor and a hotel maid. Her father, Michael Robinson Summers, was a truck driver. Monáe’s parents separated when Monáe was a toddler and her mother later married a postal worker. Monáe has a younger sister, Kimmy, from their mother’s remarriage. // Monáe was raised Baptist and learned to sing at a local church. Her family members were musicians and performers at the local AME church, the Baptist church, and the Church of God in Christ. Monáe dreamed of being a singer and a performer from a very young age, and has cited the fictional character of Dorothy Gale from The Wizard of Oz as a musical influence. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which Monáe bought two copies of with her first check, was another source of inspiration. She performed songs from the album on Juneteenth talent shows, winning three years in a row. // As a teenager, Monáe was enrolled in the Coterie Theater’s Young Playwrights’ Round Table, which began writing musicals. One musical, completed when she was around the age of 12, was inspired by the 1979 Stevie Wonder album Journey Through “The Secret Life of Plants”. // Monáe attended F. L. Schlagle High School, and after high school, moved to New York City to study musical theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where she was the only black woman in her class. Monáe enjoyed the experience, but feared that she might lose her edge and “sound, or look or feel like anybody else”. In a 2010 interview Monáe explained, “I felt like that was a home but I wanted to write my own musicals. I didn’t want to have to live vicariously through a character that had been played thousands of times – in a line with everybody wanting to play the same person.” // After a year and a half, Monáe dropped out of the academy and relocated to Atlanta, enrolling in Perimeter College at Georgia State University. She began writing her own music and performing around the campus. In 2003, Monáe self-released a demo album titled The Audition, which she sold out of the trunk of a Mitsubishi Galant. During this period, Monáe became acquainted with songwriters and producers Chuck Lightning and Nate Wonder. The three would eventually form the Wondaland Arts Collective. She worked at an Office Depot but was fired for answering a fan’s e-mail using a company computer, an incident that inspired the song “Lettin’ Go”, which in turn attracted the attention of Big Boi. // Janelle Monáe Robinson (/moʊˈneɪ/; born December 1, 1985) is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, actress, and record producer. Monáe is signed to Atlantic Records, as well as to her own imprint, the Wondaland Arts Society. Monáe has received eight Grammy Award nominations. Monáe won an MTV Video Music Award and the ASCAP Vanguard Award in 2010. Monáe was also honored with the Billboard Women in Music Rising Star Award in 2015 and the Trailblazer of the Year Award in 2018. In 2012, Monáe became a CoverGirl spokesperson. Boston City Council named October 16, 2013 “Janelle Monáe Day” in the city of Boston, Massachusetts, in recognition of her artistry and social leadership. // Monáe’s musical career began in 2003 upon releasing a demo album titled The Audition. In 2007, Monáe publicly debuted with a conceptual EP titled Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase). It peaked at number two on the US Top Heatseekers chart, and in 2010, through Bad Boy Records, Monáe released a first full-length studio album, The ArchAndroid, a concept album and sequel to her first EP. In 2011, Monáe was featured as a guest vocalist on fun.’s single “We Are Young”, which achieved major commercial success, topping the charts of more than ten countries and garnering Monáe a wider audience. Her second studio album, The Electric Lady, was released in 2013 and debuted at number five on the Billboard 200, serving as the fourth and fifth installments of the seven-part Metropolis concept series. // In 2016, Monáe made her theatrical film debut in two high-profile productions; Monáe starred in Hidden Figures as NASA mathematician and aerospace engineer Mary Jackson, and also starred in Moonlight. Hidden Figures was a box office success, while Moonlight won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 89th annual ceremony. Monáe’s third studio album, Dirty Computer, also described as a concept album, was released in 2018 to widespread critical acclaim; it was chosen as the best album of the year by several publications and earned Monáe two nominations at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. The album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 and was further promoted by Monáe’s Dirty Computer Tour, which lasted from June to August 2018.]

Blackstarkids then released, Surf Basement Demos on Dirty Hit Records on March 5, 2020. On October 29, 2020, Blackstarkids released Whatever, Man on Dirty Hit Records, their third album release of 2020. Gabe, of Blackstarkids recently described the KC Music community to an interviewer, “The music scene here is really nice. There are a lot of bands who are super talented and do all types of genres. The jazz music here is really great as well. Kansas City is honestly a hidden gem when it comes to music. I feel like you can meet an artist anywhere and anyplace in this city.” Deiondre added, “The music scene here is getting cool now, there’s a lot of jazz musicians that go to school for music here too but you can find people from different scenes all over if around the city.” Ty wrote, “The Kansas City scene is great, the community here is so supportive and genuine. This is a really prideful city here and I think they’re finally getting the musicians they deserve.”]

8. Paris Williams & The Human – “Alien Luv” (radio edit)

   [Paris Williams is a 24-year old artist from Muskegon, Michigan in the midst of redefining the bedroom pop label. Employing his own sound that he’s dubbed, “bittersweet,” Williams never shuts away from his DIY aesthetic – producing his own work to maintain full creative flexibility. Premiering in December of 2019 with his debut album, DROP DEAD GORGEOUS, Paris is a believer in hitting the ground running and then just never letting off the gas. This mentality was shaped by the inspiration he’s pulled from other famously out-of-the-box artists: such as Kanye West, Pharrell, and Toro y Moi. // Fueled by the multi-faceted artists, Williams believes heavily in pulling from all creative mediums as a way to add layers and texture to his music. This approach has led to Williams seeing support from larger than life musical pillars, like Iggy Pop himself – who showed love to Williams’ song of the same name by spinning it on his BBC radio show in 2018. 9. Cibo Matto – “Black (H)ole Sun” (Vinyl 7” Single)

   [“Black Hole Sun” is a song by American rock band Soundgarden. Written by frontman Chris Cornell, the song was released in 1994 by A&M Records as the third single from the band’s fourth studio album, Superunknown (1994). Considered to be the band’s signature song, it topped the US Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart, where it spent a total of seven weeks at number one. Despite peaking at number two on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, “Black Hole Sun” finished as the number-one track of 1994 for that listing. Worldwide, the single reached the top 10 in Australia, Canada, France, and Ireland, while in Iceland, it reached number one. // “Black Hole Sun” was included on Soundgarden’s 1997 greatest hits album A-Sides and also appeared on the 2010 compilation album Telephantasm. // Cibo Matto (pronounced [ˈtʃiːbo ˈmatto], Italian for “crazy food”) was an American alternative rock band formed by Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori in New York City in 1994. Their first album, Viva! La Woman (1996), had lyrics primarily concerned with food. For their second album, Stereo Type A (1999), they expanded into broader subject matter and recruited Sean Lennon, Timo Ellis, and Duma Love. // Honda and Hatori are Japanese expatriates. Their first album sold 40,000 copies in Japan, but was more successful in the U.S., with over 74,000 copies sold. Over time, their following in Japan grew, which resulted in their signing to Japanese record label Commmons in 2014. // After an almost decade-long hiatus, Honda and Hatori reunited in 2011, playing a series of concerts and recording new material. They released their third and final studio album, Hotel Valentine, in 2014. It reached number 168 on the Billboard 200. Cibo Matto announced their split in December 2017. // After working together in the noise rock band Leitoh Lychee, Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda formed Cibo Matto in 1994 with Honda as the instrumentalist and Hatori as the vocalist (although occasionally Honda sang and Hatori contributed instrumentally). In 1995, Cibo Matto released a self titled EP on El Diablo Records. The EP caught the attention of Warner Bros. Records, which signed Cibo Matto later in the year. Through Warner Bros., the duo released its first major album, Viva! La Woman. Cibo Matto is an Italian phrase that translates to “Crazy Food” and many of the tracks from Viva! La Woman, which was produced by Mitchell Froom, featured lyrics related to food, including “Know Your Chicken”, “Apple”, and “Birthday Cake”. The album’s first single, “Sugar Water”, was a modest college radio and dance hit. The song was accompanied by an innovative split screen music video that was directed by Michel Gondry, where each side showed the same footage—one side going forward, and one backward, meeting mid-song. After the music videos for “Know Your Chicken” and “Sugar Water” enjoyed success on MTV, Cibo Matto made appearances on various television shows such as Oddville, Viva Variety, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. “Birthday Cake” was heavily featured in the video game Jet Set Radio Future. In 1996, Cibo Matto contributed “Águas De Março (Waters of March)” to the AIDS benefit album Silencio=Muerte: Red Hot + Latin, which was produced by the Red Hot Organization. // In 1997, Cibo Matto released a new EP entitled Super Relax,[1] which would complete the line-up by introducing new members Sean Lennon and Timo Ellis with Duma Love joining soon thereafter. In 1998 Lennon released his debut solo album Into the Sun, which featured Hatori (“Into the Sun”, “Sean’s Theme”) and Ellis (“Mystery Juice”, “Home”, “Spaceship”). Into the Sun was produced and inspired by Honda (whom Lennon was dating at the time). Honda, Hatori, Ellis and Love appeared in the closing scene of the video for Lennon’s single “Home”. Cibo Matto went on to release its second album Stereo Type A in 1999. Although it was a departure from the familiar sound of Viva! La Woman, Stereo Type A was well received by music critics. That year the band performed with Luscious Jackson at The Opera House in Toronto. // Cibo Matto continued to play live and tour until disbanding in 2002. Honda said: “We felt the need to move to the next step. It was a healthy decision, though it was sad at the same time. Things just need to grow out of things sometimes.” All of the members of Cibo Matto went on to release solo material. A compilation entitled Pom Pom: The Essential Cibo Matto was released in 2007. // Cibo Matto announced its reunion on March 18, 2011, to perform as part of a benefit concert for victims of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The concert, which took place on March 27 at Columbia University in New York City, also included Yoko Ono, John Zorn, Sonic Youth, and Mike Patton. Following the success of this show, a second was added, this time featuring the Plastic Ono Band and Patti Smith along with Cibo Matto. // The group appeared at the Hollywood Bowl on June 26, 2011, for another benefit, alongside Yellow Magic Orchestra. // On May 16, 2011, Cibo Matto announced its US reunion tour titled “Yeah, Basically Cibo Matto” with a tour Web site and promotional video. During the concerts, the band reportedly spoke about a new studio album that was to be released in 2012. On July 17, 2012, the band announced it would be opening for Wilco at one of its shows. The band included Yuko Araki on drums during this time. // On June 15, 2013, the band played the Meltdown Festival in London and announced that its new album would be released in 2014. While the performance also featured Yoko Ono on “Know Your Chicken”, the group also played new songs titled “MFN”, “Check In”, and “Tenth Floor Ghost Girl”. On December 11, Pitchfork reported that Hotel Valentine would be released on February 14, 2014 (Valentine’s Day), and that Cibo Matto had shared its music video for “MFN”. Hotel Valentine peaked at number 168 on the Billboard 200. // In 2014, the band signed with Japanese label Commmons. This new relationship resulted in several live dates in Japan including Summer Sonic Festival 2014 and shows at Blue Note Jazz Club Nagoya and Blue Note Jazz Club Tokyo. // In September 2014, Cibo Matto released a teaser video announcing their Fall Flavor Tour and a new music video. Rioux opened for multiple US shows. Nels Cline (of Wilco) also performed with the group on tour. The music video for “Déjà Vu” was released on September 18, 2014 in collaboration with New York City-based director Jean Claude Billmaier and creative house Marabigo. Pitchfork identified the video as “a colorful, datamosh-y new video”, and Spin as a “stylish bubblegum pop-meets-digital-disaster (intentional)”. // Cibo Matto completed two small tours in 2015; an “Avocado Tour” of Japan and a “Banana Split Tour” across the eastern US and Canada. 10. Hole – “Violet”

    [Live Through This is the second studio album by the American alternative rock band Hole, released on April 12, 1994, by DGC Records. Recorded in late 1993, it departed from the band’s unpolished hardcore aesthetics to more refined melodies and song structure. Frontwoman Courtney Love said that she wanted the record to be “shocking to the people who think that we don’t have a soft edge”, but maintain a harsh sensibility. The album was produced by Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie and mixed by Scott Litt and J Mascis. The lyrics and packaging reflect Love’s thematic preoccupations with beauty, and motifs of milk, motherhood, anti-elitism, and violence against women, while Love derived the album title from a quote in Gone with the Wind (1939). // Live Through This was met with critical acclaim, and charted in nine countries before going multi-platinum in the US in December 1994. Despite this, it was also the subject of some public discussion regarding unsubstantiated rumors that Love’s husband, Kurt Cobain—who died by suicide one week before the album’s release—helped ghostwrite the album. This claim has been disputed by the band members, producers, as well as music biographers, though the band confirmed that Cobain sang additional backing vocals on two tracks during a visit to the studio. It was also the only Hole album to feature bassist Kristen Pfaff, and the final album to be released during her lifetime, as she died two months after the album’s release. // In critical circles, Live Through This is considered a contemporary classic, and was included in Rolling Stone’s 2020 updated list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time at number 106. As of 2010, it has sold over 1.6 million copies in the US. // Hole released their debut studio album, Pretty on the Inside, in 1991. Despite moderate sales, the album was a critical success among English and American press. In March 1992, following the album tour, drummer Caroline Rue and bassist Jill Emery left the band due to artistic differences.[10] In April 1992, vocalist Courtney Love and guitarist Eric Erlandson arranged auditions for a drummer at the Jabberjaw in Los Angeles and recruited drummer Patty Schemel. Following the 1992 Rodney King riots in Los Angeles, Love, Erlandson, and Schemel relocated to a Carnation, Washington home owned by Love and her husband, the Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, and began rehearsing and writing new material. “We had been going more pop, less journal-entry noise stuff,” said Erlandson. Love said: “I was very competitive with Kurt because I wanted more melody. During breaks in Nirvana’s session, Love and Schemel recorded a number of songs later featured on Live Through This, including “Miss World”, “She Walks on Me”, “I Think That I Would Die” and “Softer, Softest”. // In 1993, the band recruited former Janitor Joe bassist Kristen Pfaff, an accomplished cellist and classically trained musician who brought a new level of professionalism to the group. Katie has appeared on almost every stage in KC. She is a member of the UMKC Conservatory Alumni Board, the AIDS Service Foundation Steering Committee, Artistic Director of KC Strips, and sings with Lost Wax. Beat as the third and final single from their debut album, Dummy (1994). It samples “Ike’s Rap II” by Isaac Hayes and peaked at number 13 on the UK Singles Chart. Additionally, the song was a top 10 hit in Iceland, while entering the top 20 in France, Ireland and Scotland. Beth Gibbons has said it is a misinterpretation to see the lyrics as a demand for a return to more traditional masculine and feminine roles. She has said “The key line in the song really is “Move over and give us some room” because I do think that women are very much taken for granted. // On June 23 2023 Calvin released his 14 track album Paraduise. Flight Attendant’s previous singles, “Therapy Couch,” and “Anime,” have both received rotation on KC stations, 90.9 The Bridge and KKFI 90.1FM – and now she’d love to see her hometown title track “KC Hot Mess,” get some love.     [Yola Young began writing her own songs at age 11. She attended the Brit School (famed alumni including Adele, Amy Winehouse, Loyle Carner and Raye) after which she briefly attempted a “proper” job, working at an ice cream shop. She built a following through open mic nights, small London pubs and venues, where labels began showing up. Signed to Island aged 18 and has released a succession of singles and EPs, including a couple songs in collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Paul Epworth (Adele, Florence and the Machine). Her songs a reflection of the often-wonky Gen Z experience, a world of weed, booze, infidelity, job insecurity, self-loathing, mental health struggles, the hazards of the digital era and a bit more weed.]

Kate Hall is General Manager, of Afterword Tavern and Shelves. She Grew up in Southern California. Kate moved to northwest Missouri in 2004 and became a Northwest Missouri English graduate in 2009. Kate moved to Kansas City in 2014 and worked in the industry of manufacturing food. Kate went to Afterword for a fun second job in 2022. She started as a barback, then a bartender. When her General Manager decided to transition Kate left her corporate management job to manage Afterword.

Destiny Atkinson is Assistant Manager of Afterword Tavern and Shelves. She is 23 and loves reading and any time she is off work you can find her snuggled up with her cat or dog reading a book or hanging out with her fiance. Destiny has been at Afterword a little over two years now. She writes that “it feels like coming home. The environment as a guest or as a staff member is cozy, welcoming, and fun. I’ve always enjoyed mixing drinks so when I became a bar manager this felt like the perfect place. I mean, books and booze? There’s nothing better. I love being at a place where I can be fully creative and mentor others who enjoy it as well.}

17. Leon Bridges – “Laredo”

    [Leon is the fourth studio album by American singer Leon Bridges. It was released on October 4, 2024, by Columbia Records. Centered around his upbringing in Fort Worth, Texas, he primarily recorded the album in Mexico City and worked with producers Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian. The album was preceded by three singles: “Peaceful Place”, “Laredo”, and “That’s What I Love”. It received generally positive reviews from music critics. // Leon Bridges wrote the album about his experience growing up in Fort Worth, Texas, whose music scene he credited with inspiring the folk and country music influences on the album. Several songs on Leon were written during the production of his 2021 album Gold-Diggers Sound. He spent “almost five years” working on the album in Los Angeles and Nashville before moving production to Mexico City,[4] where he spent the last few months of 2023 recording the album at El Desierto studio.[6] During a session in Los Angeles, Bridges began streaming on Instagram Live and was contacted by American musician John Mayer, who invited Bridges to his studio where they collaborated on “When a Man Cries”. // Bridges cited Roy C and Van Morrison (specifically his 1968 album Astral Weeks) as influences on the album’s sound and lyricism. // Leon received generally positive reviews from music critics.    [Kat writes: “Living Room formed out of a guitar melody that Derek sent me in a voice recording. It was in the early stages of living with a partner for the first time where you have to figure out how to navigate your independence while cohabitating because you realize the joy in having someone to leave early with or to just stay home with. There was an evening when she was out of town and I was sitting in our living room having a crisis because I was feeling the heaviness of the injustices in the world and I didn’t want to leave the house but I also didn’t want to be home alone. These were feelings I’d navigated before as a single person but it was hitting in such a different way. As someone who had always operated from a state of FOMO, it felt so out of character to choose staying home instead of going to find something to do. It’s silly but in that moment it felt like I wasn’t the same person that I was before living together, so naturally I grabbed my guitar to try and work through that feeling. I knew I wanted to revisit that guitar recording Derek sent me because of its nostalgic sound and I ended up writing the entire song that evening. When I showed the band we restructured the song, jumping right into the chorus instead of the classic verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure it was initially. John also wrote this beautiful melodic bass line that acts as a counter melody throughout which I think gives it such an interesting instrumental story arc.    [This is first single off Leah Sproul’s upcoming solo album, WILD HEART QUEEN. // Coming from a family of European opera stars, suburban church organists, flower child Reggae guitarists, and breezy Western campfire pickers, Leah was bound to have an eclectic sound and set of influences. She has a voracious interest in music of all genres, having earned a doctorate in music composition from UMKC conservatory. But her mother tongue, the voice where she’s at her most vulnerable and honest, is that of the achy-breaky, belting balladeer. It’s found in country, folk, and those genres that give equal weight to words and music. 10:11 – Interview with Cameron Thomas

Cameron Thomas began his dance training in his hometown of Rochester, NY. In 2013, he began performing regularly with the Rochester City Ballet. In 2015, Cameron received a full scholarship to attend the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre. He then joined Kansas City Ballet II for the 2016-2017 season and was promoted to the company the following season. Now in his eighth season with Kansas City Ballet, Cameron has performed soloist and principal roles in Jiri Kylian’s Petit Mort, Alexander Ekman’s Cacti, Mark Morris’ Sandpaper Ballet, William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, Septime Webre’s The Wizard of Oz, Michael Pink’s Dracula, Lila York’s Celts, Val Caniparoli’s Lady of the Camellias, and Devon Carney’s Cinderella, Giselle, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. In October of 2023, Cameron performed in the North American premiere of Val Caniparoli’s Jekyll and Hyde as Mr. Hyde. As a choreographer, Cameron has created work for Kansas City Ballet, Kansas City Ballet II, Youth American Grand Prix, and Creative Intersections.

In addition to being a dancer, Cameron is a ballet pianist and has accompanied for the Kansas City Ballet School, Oklahoma City Ballet School, Williams Henry Contemporary Dance, and the Worldwide Ballet Zoom classes.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cameron co-founded Creative Intersections, an outdoor performance project, with James Kirby Rogers to bring live dance back in a time when theaters were shut down. Creative Intersections partnered with Owen Cox Dance Group to present outdoor programs directed by Cameron every summer, 2020-2024.

This annual outdoor performance is directed by Cameron Thomas, and features new works by Julia Gundzik, Elaine Kimble, Kristopher Estes-Brown, Olivia Emert, Christopher Ruud, and Jennifer Owen.

Big Fat Cow is a post-country band delivering cowpoke fuzz since 2022.

Big Fat Cow’s first endeavor was a folk album (Glutton for Punishment) written and recorded by Noah Cassity and mastered and digitized by Kole Waters. Wanting to perform the songs live, Noah recruited the help of Kole on lead guitar alongside childhood friend Alex May to play the bass. Kole was able to bring in Matt Chipman to play drums and finish out the band.

Big Fat Cow has made themselves a household name in the Kansas City music scene, leaving an impression on everyone who comes out to see them play. With songs you can dance to and songs that will make you cry in the basement of a DIY show, Big Fat Cow is sure to leave their mark.

Scott Easterday is a musician, singer, and composer. He has been playing for 35 as a musician in the Kansas City scene, playing bass in the Mongol Beach Party, playing guitar singing and songwriting for his mid 1990s band Easterday, performing for several years as a member of Howard Iceberg and The Titanics, and as the founder and lead singer for the Expassionates. Scott has written reviews and interviews about local performing artists for KC Metropolis, and has volunteered and served as a Board Member and treasurer of Midwest Music Foundation. Worked as a Cataloging Assistant specializing in Western Languages at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art–Spencer Art Reference Library.

Writer and musician Elaine McMilian graduating from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1991 with a Creative Writing degree. Elaine McMilian has performed in and around KC for over 30 years as a solo artist and in the bands: Swingin’ 6, Easterday, Bonnys’ McGill, Toy Box, Sugar Plums, and The Brannock Device, singing American ballads, folk, alternative, rock and punk. She has collaborated and recorded with many of Kansas City’s very best song writers and musicians including: Erin McGrane, Jason Beers, Marco Pascolini, Scott Easterday, Christian Hankel and Howard Iceberg. Kyle Dahlquist is a keyboardist, guitarist, he also plays accordion, and trombone and sings. He was a member of Mongol Beach Party bandmate with Scott. He learned to play accordian when he joined Alacartoona. He plays with The Band That Fell to Earth KC – the David Bowie Tribute band, and Men of Men a super group that thrills audiences with every concert they play, Kyle has also played with Amy Farrand and The Like, and many other bands.

This retrospective concert will feature 11 other musicians that have performed with Scott over the years. There will be 3 acts for the evening that will include songs from the bands Expassionates, the easterday band, The Roosevelts and one from Mongol Beach Party.

The first band will perform some songs from Scott’s first CD album from 1998, Expassionates:Verse, Chorus, Bridge.

The band has Matt Richey on drums who recently performed at the Grizly Hand Farewell Jubilee and also drums for Mikal Shapiro’s The Musical.

Bryan Hicks on bass who can be seen at The Quality Hill Playhouse and in jazz clubs all over town.

Nate Hofer on pedal steel, also an award winning photographer, will start the show with experimental-ambient music like that on his 2024 EP, Decommissioned.

Kayle Dahlquist on keyboard, guitar, accordion, trombone and vocals, is one man from Men of Men and was a Mongol Beach Party bandmate with Scott.

Richard Alwyn is on harmonica, guitar and vocals and will also be featured later in the next act.

The original recording of Verse, Chorus, Bridge was done at the El Torreon Ballroom (also known as the Cowtown Ballroom) and at the studio of recording engineer Chad Miese in 1998.

Scott began his professional music career playing bass with The Mongol Beach Party in 1989 and this group will resurrect one of Scott’s songs from that period.

The second act of the evening is the easterday band featuring Elaine McMilian on vocals, Jon Niccum on bass and Mark Acuff on drums.

They will perform songs from their CD easterday: 1993-1995, indicating the years they were active, recorded at Red House Studios by Ed Rose and released in 2004. They have had a couple reunions since then and are taking advantage of this occasion to have another.

Mark plays drums in Promise Breakers. Jon was the creator of The Worst Gig [worstgig.com] and Elaine just published her first book of poetry, Copper and Other Precious Metals.

This group will also be joined by Richard Alwyn for a couple songs from the time predating the easterday band when he and Scott had a band together called The Roosevelts. One of those songs, Cyclone, was on Scott’s first ever demo cassette from 1992 recorded at Westend Recording Studios by Bart Biechele. Cyclone was on the easterday band’s debut cassette Sucker from 1991 and enjoyed some local chart time on Lawerence’s The Lazer, 105.9 FM.

Richard Alwyn’s band in the 90s was Big Red Fish. Scott joined the band and they later reformed The Roosevelts together. Richard moved to Raleigh, NC where he founded The Love Hangover, an annual music showcase of love songs held on the day after Valentine’s Day in 5 cities. Scott was the Kansas City Chapter host of The Love Hangover from 1989 until 2022 when he handed it over to Steve Tulipana at the recordBar. Richard eventually moved to Brooklyn, NY, set up The Love Hangover there, and has been there for 20 years. During that time he has written and performed with the bands King Canutes, The Winter Drinks and Gramercy Arms.

THe final act of the night are Exapassionates. Scott and guitarist Marco Pascolini played duo shows after the recording Verse, Chorus, Bridge until they added the happy bass player Richard Burgess and drummer Sam Platt in 2006. The Happy Bass Player is a book of lessons on happiness written by Richard. Sam holds court on weekends in various ensembles at the Green Lady Lounge, the Orion Room and Black Dolphin.

They will be performing songs from the second Expassionates CD album Landscapes, released in 2008, recorded by Sam Platt and Chad Miese. They will also throw in a new song.

The performance will begin at 7 PM (doors at 6) and is $15, Sunday, August 4 at the recordBar, 1520 Grand, advance tickets available at therecordbar.com.

Also with us is Arick “T.A. RELL” Ridgell who is a songwriter/producer/artist based out of Kansas City, MO. The 33 year old musician has been writing and producing music since the age of 18. While he picked up the itch to make music later than most, his heavy arsenal of musical influences are what have elevated his quality of work. T.A.’s influences range from the late great Ray Charles, gospel Icon John P. Kee, Brandy, to the current groundbreakers like PJ Morton and Jon Bellion. T.A. tries not to trap himself in the box on genres but tries to use his love for all music to unlock the hearts and souls of listeners around the world.
