[Texas-born Dear moved to Michigan as a teenager, where he was inspired by the sound of Detroit Techno. Dear met Sam Valenti IV at a party while attending the University of Michigan, after which the two started the record label, Ghostly International, based on a shared love of electronic music.]

3. Deerhoof – “Zero Seconds Pause”
from: Breakup Song / Polyvinyl / September 4, 2012
[the 12th self-produced albums from the unpredictable noise band originally from San Francisco. Formed in 1994, Deerhoof has maintained that they never knew what kind of music they would create next, nor that they even had any idea what they were doing when they created it. The members of Deerhoof are: Satomi Matsuzaki, John Dieterich, Ed Rodriguez and Greg Saunier.]

4. The xx – “Angels”

[English indie pop band, formed in London in 2008. The group released their debut album, xx in August 2009. In 2010, the band won the Mercury Music Prize for their debut album. The band met while studying at Elliott School, the same school that produced Hot Chip, and Four Tet. Oliver Sim and Romy Madley-Croft started the band as a duo when they were 15. Guitarist Baria Qureshi joined once they began performing in 2005, with Jamie Smith joining a year after.]

6. Johnny Cash – “Personal Jesus”
from: American IV: The Man Comes Around / American Recordings – Universal / Nov 5, 2002
[Originally recorded and written by Depeche Mode from their 1982 release “Violator.” This was from Cash’s 4th album in the American series, (and his 87th overall) This is the last album released before his death in 2003. Produced by Rick Rubin who asked ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante to re-work an acoustic version of Martin Gore’s song, which featured a simple acoustic riff that stripped down the song to a blues style. With backing vocal assistance from: Fiona Apple, Nick Cave, and Don Henley. American IV was the final Cash album released during his lifetime. It was also his first non-compilation album to go gold (selling over 500,000 copies) in thirty years. Additionally, the album won “Album of the Year” award at the 2003 CMA Awards. It was certified Gold on 4/24/2003 and Platinum on 11/21/2003 by the R.I.A.A.]

Lawrence, Kansas, based writer, Kelly Barth was a fiction fellow in the University of Montana’s creative writing program and has received fellowships from the Missouri Arts Council and the Kansas Arts Commission. Her work has been published most recently by Coal City Review and Muse & Stone. Kelly Barth joins us today to discuss her funny and heartbreaking new memoir, “My Almost Certainly Real Imaginary Jesus,” from Arktoi Books, an imprint of Red Hen Press.

Bill Sundahl is a musician and singer and songwriter who was part of the Pitch Music Award winning band It’s Over, and the critically acclaimed The Columns, and he also plays in the KC supergroup: The Starhaven Rounders. Bill Sundahl is the founder of Spice of Life Productions, creator of “The Donkey Show,” and founder and organizer of The Crossroads Music Festival, now in it’s 8th year. For 8 years now Bill has joined us in September, on the Wednesday MidDay Medley to talk about the Festival, the Crossroads, and the great bands from kansas City, Lawrence, Chicago and Wisconsin, that are participating.

Recorded live at the Cooler Studio in Kansas City, Kansas, with Chad Meise, and mastered by Collin Jordan at the Boiler Room in Chicago, using both vintage analog and modern digital technologies. The album will be released on CD and as a limited edition collectible vinyl LP at local music stores, and also available on iTunes.
