Enrique Chi, the leader and songwriter of Making Movies, will discuss and showcase work from his Art As Mentorship project, a program that will take twenty young songwriters through a year of artistic development. For six years Making Movies has hosted an inner-city music camp through the Mattie Rhodes Center. The students and experiences from the camp became the inspiration for the Art As Mentorship program. The band’s story and community efforts were just featured on a beautiful NPR piece.

11.Pageant Boys – “Last Rites”

[On what was originally slated to be a short trip to Istanbul, Alex Sheppard started recording music with his girlfriend’s laptop and a bluetooth headphone mic. None of Sheppard’s previous musical efforts incorporated electronics in a major way; “It was born of necessity,” says Sheppard. The songs on his new EP, Shadowboxing, came out of those original sessions. The songs are a sensual and almost effervescent approach that combine R&B elements with electronic and processed instrumentation. While in Istanbul, Sheppard established a routine in collaborating with a close friend and poet. He said they developed a fairly specific daily routine for working on music, with the intent of finishing songs, regardless of their quality. “I would wake up at 8 in the morning and start the song and get the chord structure. And then at 10, he would wake up and I would show him what I had. I’d make breakfast, and then I’d show him the melody I wanted for the vocal line. He’d go down and start writing the lyrics, we’d eat breakfast, and he’d have the lyrics written after we got done with breakfast. At 1, I’d start recording the vocals. It was a good schedule.” Sheppard has been writing and recording for the last decade even though he is just in 20’s. Before Sheppard started performing and recording as Pageant Boys he released several albums as Alexandre. Shadowboxing is the maturation of Sheppard’s artistic vision and introduction to a larger audience.]

[Debut recording from Lawrence, Kansas band, Nick Carswell, Jason Slote, Dan Hines, Austin Quick. Nick Carswell is a founding member of InterUrban ArtHouse. Silly Goose Records (SGR) was originally founded in Ireland in 2010, by Irish musician and songwriter Nick Carswell. The label released several records and supported bands, coordinating national tours, media and television appearances and PR campaigns. Carswell relocated to Kansas in 2011 and began working with local musicians through the Barrel House piano bar in downtown Lawrence. In January 2013, Silly Goose Records was re-imagined as an independent collective, where artists could collaborate and come together to share experience and resources. Within their first year, bands in the collective have released several EPs, produced and recorded online videos, recorded full-length albums and even incorporated as LLCs. [Kansas City based Jazz vocalist Lisa Henry has played all over the world including South Africa, Argentina, Mozambique, Mumbai India. Lisa began her early singing career in the Baptist Church at the age of 6. By age 12, she had been exposed to the music of Billie Holiday and Miles Davis. Having heard the improvisational magic of Billie and Miles, Lisa turned to jazz, and has been a narrator of the art form ever since. Her professional jazz career began in the nightclubs of Kansas City at age 17. She was mentored by the great Hammond B-3 player, Everette Devan, and cut her big band “teeth”, performing with the Vince Bilardo Big Band and Steve Miller Orchestra. Lisa Henry is an artist of vast accomplishments, both in and outside the realm of performance. These accomplishments include the recently televised PBS Special: In Performance at the White House, First runner-up in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition, International Jazz Ambassador to Africa, CD recordings, BET documentaries, and recognition as an international clinician and adjudicator. “She’s just fantastic!
