About Mark Manning

For 19 years Mark Manning has served as Coordinator of the KCK Organic Teaching Gardens, an Initiative of The University of Kansas School of Medicine, Office of Cultural Enhancement and Diversity, Health Careers Pathways Program, K-12. Each year Mark works with 1000 to 2000 students, between K through 8th grades, with organic, "raised bed" gardens built directly on the school grounds of three Middle Schools and four Elementary Schools in the inner city of the Kansas City, Kansas school district. Mark conducts over 440 workshops annually in classrooms at these schools. He started the project under the guidance of Marcia Pomeroy, in 1999, after working in a literacy program. The KCK Organic Teaching Gardens has been financially supported through grants from The Kauffman Foundation, and The University of Kansas Medical Center. The project has been recognized locally and nationally by The National Gardening Association, The Kansas City Star, The Kansas City Community Gardens, The Green Bliss Festival, The Urban Farm & Garden Tour, and on the PBS television program America's Harvest. Mark learned about gardening from his grandmother Edna Jacobsen on the family's McCool Junction, Nebraska farm. His grandmother raised a huge garden, chickens, sheep and cattle. She preserved apples, wild berry jams, and beets and virtually everything she grew was canned for consumption in winter months. Edna raised seven children with no running water and as a child lived in a sod house. His passion for the school gardening program has been fueled by the fact that he doesn't see the lessons he learned from his grandmother passed down to kids today. Kids need to know where their food comes from, especially with the rise of diabetes, and over weight Americans. We can all learn from our gardens how to treat ourselves and the world better.

10:15 – Interview with Robert Gibby Brand & Michael Reiser

Robert Gibby Brand & Michael Reiser for Spinning Tree Theatre's production of Amadeus (May 4, 2016 on Wednesday MidDay Medley)

Robert Gibby Brand & Michael Reiser for Spinning Tree Theatre’s production of Amadeus (May 4, 2016 on Wednesday MidDay Medley)

Kansas City based actor, Michael Reiser is making his professional theatre debut, in the role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, for Spinning Tree Theatre‘s production of Amadeus, by Peter Shaffer. This Tony Award-winning play, which became an Oscar-winning movie, opened last weekend and is running Wednesdays through Sundays, through May 15, at The Arts Asylum, 1000 East 9th Street, (9th and Harrison), Kansas City, Missouri.

Joining us is Michael Reiser who plays Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Michael recently returned to KC after completing his BFA in Acting at Missouri State University.

Also with us is acclaimed actor, Robert Gibby Brand who plays, Antonio Salieri in the play, Amadeus. He was recently seen in “A Soldier’s Tale” with Owen/Cox Dance Ensemble, and in “The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail” for Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre. He has worked at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre, The Unicorn, The Coterie, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, Bach Aria Soloists, The KC Public Library, The Lyric Opera, Quality Hill Playhouse and New Theatre Restaurant. And will be seen in I Do, I Do at the Chestnut Fine Arts Theatre and in The Pirates of Penzance at the Lyric Opera of KC.

Robert Gibby Brand, was with us, in August 2014, to discuss “Ghost-Writer,” with Spinning Tree, and now he is in the celebrated role of Antonio Salieri for Spinning Tree Theatre’s Amadeus. Sir Ian McKellen won a Tony Award for his portrayal pf this character, and F. Murray Abraham won and Oscar for his interpretation of this role, Robert talked about the adventure of playing Salieri.

Mozart continues to influence popular music today. One of our local record labels The Record Machine just put out a compilation of area bands that include a new song from the Milwaukee band, Light Music called, “Amadeus.” In the way that Peter Shaffer tells the story you could almost say that to Salieri, Amadeus Mozart looked and lived like punk rocker. The composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died on Dec 5, 1791 at the age of 35.

Antonio Salieri was born Aug 18, 1750 and died May 7, 1825. He was an Italian classical composer, conductor, and teacher. 18th century Vienna, court composer Antonio Salieri is highly admired…until Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart arrives. This play pits blazing human ambition against heavenly genius.

Amadeus is a play by Peter Shaffer, which gives a highly fictionalized account of the lives of the composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. First performed in 1979. Significant use is made of the music of Mozart, Salieri and composers of the period. The premieres of Mozart’s operas The Abduction from the Seraglio, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute are each the setting for key scenes of the play. Amadeus won 1981 Tony Award for Best Play & 1984 Academy Award for Best Film.

Since original run, Shaffer has extensively revised play, including changes to plot details. At the opening, Salieri is an old man, having long outlived his fame. Speaking directly to the audience, he claims to have used poison to assassinate Mozart, and promises to explain himself.

KC based, HMPH! is a math-rock band infusing drums, guitar, looping pedal and effects, to create a huge booming beautiful, complex sound of patterns and riffs and melody. Their debut full-length “Headrush” was released on limited edition cassette in April, 2015. The band’s debut was recorded by Dedric Moore of Monta at Odds. Nanci Lee Ayala Rush designed their album cover. More information at: http://www.haymakerrecords.net/hmph

Ryan Lee Toms is also known for his musical recordings as RLT, an experimental / Dance / Electronic Band consisting of Ryan Lee Toms and John Bersuch, recording on RUSTY RECORDS with: Loop heavy electronic psych-rock with intense rhythmic backgrounds. RLT relies heavily on spastic electronic loops and intense drum rhythm. At times it can sound swirly and fun and others dark and gritty, all while driving a complex under rhythm that can change frantically. RLT is a long ever changing project.

4. Iris DeMent – “Listening To Singing”
from: The Trackless Woods / FlariElla / August 7, 2015
[6th studio album from Grammy nominated Iris DeMent who NPR said was considered “one of the great voices in contemporary popular music.” The Trackless Woods sets 18 poems by acclaimed 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova to life. Hailed as one of Russia’s finest poets, Akhmatova survived the Bolshevik Revolution, both World Wars and Stalin. She lost family, friends and fellow writers to political killings and labor in the gulags. When Iris randomly stumbled upon Akhmatova’s work in a book of poetry a friend sent as a gift, she was immediately taken by the sorrow and burden of the poems, juxtaposed with Akhmatova’s lightness and transcendence in the face of inhumanity. “Anna’s gift of song is so strong, about alI I had to do was get really quiet and listen,” says Iris. After reading that first poem the melodies began pouring out of her, and before she even fully understood what was driving her, Iris was gathering musicians and friends, including co-producer Richard Bennett (Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Steve Earle), to record ‘The Trackless Woods’ in her living room over a five-day period. The result is a breathtaking pairing of piano and voice in Iris’ style with timeless melodies that are deeply rooted in the American South. The project also fulfilled a long yearned-for desire to connect with her adopted daughter’s culture and history. Iris and her husband Greg Brown adopted their daughter from Siberia in 2005, when she was 6, and she says “I’d never have made this record were it not for her.”]

Stephonne and Jamie Searle

Stephonne and Jamie Searle

Calling himself the lovechild of Prince and Billie Holiday, 29 year old singer-songwriter Stephonne Singleton was born in Kansas City and grew up in the inner-city, of Wyandotte County going to High School at Bishop Ward. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Bendictine College and his Masters in Entertainment Business from Full Sail University. He worked as a musician and actor in Kansas City and joins us to share music from his upcoming album, “Caged Bird Sings Songs About Red Beard” to be released this summer. Stephonne will perform new songs from the album at The #FREECAGEDBIRD Show, Friday, April 22, at 7:00 pm, at Prohibition Hall, 1118 McGee St, KCMO, where Stephonne will be joined by Wick & The Tricks, Ivory Black, and DJ Joc Max.

Also joining us is musician, composer, arranger, band leader and producer, Jamie Searle, member of the band My Brothers & Sisters.

Stephonne Singleton and Jamie Searle, were last on the show together, back on November 4.

Stephonne grew up listening to Anita Baker, Luther Vandross, and Patti Labelle to Barbara Streisand, The Beatles and Marvin Gaye.” The young singer, from age 6 on, sang in choirs and read album liner notes, and was fascinated by all the players, writers, producers and lyrics he found.

Stephonne started writing songs at 10 but didn’t learn to read music until high school.

“I always had a notepad and a full ink pen and I would just write. I heard every instrument and note in my head. I had such a love for melody because it was the way I remembered those songs. Even when I knew notes and chords I still wrote it all in my
The genres of Jazz, Blues, R&B, Pop, Rock, Folk and Funk all collided together.”

The songs for “Caged Bird Sings Songs about Red Beard” were all birthed in the last 5 years, a time Stephonne describes as a dark time of heartbreak, identity crisis, and depression and healing. “Without music I would truly be dead. All of these thoughts and emotions coursed through my soul and body as bad blood and getting it out on paper and recording it was my only salvation. So much came out but these songs, the survivors, are the ones that never went away. These songs demanded to be heard and hit me like a brick every time I sang through a melody of them.”

Stephonne wrote that “The stars aligned when you met, Jamie Searle, of My Brothers & Sisters who is serving as producer and arranger for the new album.

Stephen writes, “He is the first person that could hear exactly what was in my head. Even with a music degree I could never bring the songs what they needed and he is such a true servant of music it blows my mind every day.”

3. David Bowie – “Black Country Rock”
from: The Man Who Sold The World / RCA – (Rykodisk – Virgin – Sony – EMI – Columbia ISO) / November 4, 1970
[Written by David Bowie in 1970 for the album The Man Who Sold the World, which was released in November 1970 in the U.S. and April 1971 in the UK. (It was also issued as the B-side to Bowie’s January 1971 “Holy Holy” single.) An upbeat blues-rock number, “Black Country Rock” has been described as a “respite” from the musical and thematical heaviness of the remainder of the album. Its style has been compared to Marc Bolan’s contemporary Tyrannosaurus Rex, down to Bowie’s imitative vibrato in the final verse. According to producer Tony Visconti, Bowie had the music ready by the start of the sessions but the words were a last-minute addition in the studio, the singer doing his Bolan impression “spontaneously … because he ran out of lyrics … we all thought it was cool, so it stayed.”]

[Holy Holy is the name of a new concert show celebrating David Bowie’s early songs, and featuring Woody Woodmansey, legendary Spider from Mars and David Bowie’s drummer from 1970-1973 and Tony Visconti, Bowie’s longtime producer, friend and bass player on The Man Who Sold The World, along with Glen Gregory of Heaven 17 on vocals, James Stevenson of The Alarm and The Cult on guitar; Paul Cudderford who worked with Ian Hunter and Bob Geldof on guitars & backing vocals; Berenice Scott of Heaven 17 on keyboards; Terry Edwards who worked with PJ Harvey and The Blockheads on saxophone, guitar, percussion & backing vocals; nd Jessica Lee Morgan on backing vocals. Kristina Ning & Jen Appell are Not Sisters

Not Sisters are an indie-acoustic-folk-cabaret duo consisting of Jen Appell on guitar & vocals, and Kristina Ning on upright bass.

Kristina Ning grew up in the South Kansas City, Missouri neighborhood of Orchard Heights. She graduated from Center High School in 1990. Music is in her DNA as her father Mike Ning is part of Kansas City Jazz History. Since 1998 Kristina has helped keep people healed, warmed up, and ready to go, with her Certified Massage Therapy, in Swedish and Thai techniques with over 500 hours of service. Kristina also makes handcrafted soaps and is huge supporter of the local music scene. Kristina is a mom to 5 year old Isobelle with her husband Tim Whipple. Kristina Ning is a true renaissance woman who started taking bass classes from Johnny Hamil before forming Not Sisters with her friend Jen Appell.

Jen Appell is originally from The Bronx, New York City. She studied at Kansas State University and has worked in Kansas City as an actress, musician, singer, composer and writer, Box Office Manager, and restaurant manager. Jen once hosted an amazing traditional Passover Seder in my house, complete with the bitter herb, and we’ve also spent Thanksgiving morning together, roasting a bourbon turkey, for our chosen family of friends. Jen’s creative spirit has been channeled into art, music, performance and more recently a series of children’s books and stories that she is developing. Jen Appell is mom to twin daughters, nine year old, Nora and Peyton. Jen Appell is also the new host of the Uptown Sirens Collective, presented on the second Thursday of every month at Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club. The next Uptown Sirens Collective is Thursday, April 14, at 7:30 pm featuring Not Sisters, Mirina Landry, and Andara.

Not Sisters started when Jen decided to go out and perform her songs live at Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club at an open mic and made connections the led to her hosting The Uptown Sirens Collective, and creating a musical collaboration with her friend Kristina Ning.

Not Sisters are both moms of young daughters under 10, and during rehearsals their children play together.

Chase has also recorded his original compositions as Towers where he wrote, performed, produced, and engineered the recording, “For Whatever We Were & What Will Never Be” as Towers.
