About Mark Manning

For 19 years Mark Manning has served as Coordinator of the KCK Organic Teaching Gardens, an Initiative of The University of Kansas School of Medicine, Office of Cultural Enhancement and Diversity, Health Careers Pathways Program, K-12. Each year Mark works with 1000 to 2000 students, between K through 8th grades, with organic, "raised bed" gardens built directly on the school grounds of three Middle Schools and four Elementary Schools in the inner city of the Kansas City, Kansas school district. Mark conducts over 440 workshops annually in classrooms at these schools. He started the project under the guidance of Marcia Pomeroy, in 1999, after working in a literacy program. The KCK Organic Teaching Gardens has been financially supported through grants from The Kauffman Foundation, and The University of Kansas Medical Center. The project has been recognized locally and nationally by The National Gardening Association, The Kansas City Star, The Kansas City Community Gardens, The Green Bliss Festival, The Urban Farm & Garden Tour, and on the PBS television program America's Harvest. Mark learned about gardening from his grandmother Edna Jacobsen on the family's McCool Junction, Nebraska farm. His grandmother raised a huge garden, chickens, sheep and cattle. She preserved apples, wild berry jams, and beets and virtually everything she grew was canned for consumption in winter months. Edna raised seven children with no running water and as a child lived in a sod house. His passion for the school gardening program has been fueled by the fact that he doesn't see the lessons he learned from his grandmother passed down to kids today. Kids need to know where their food comes from, especially with the rise of diabetes, and over weight Americans. We can all learn from our gardens how to treat ourselves and the world better.

21. Barbara Lewis – “Hello Stranger”
from: Moonlight (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack / Independent / October 21, 2016
[Originally released as a single in March 1973. Barbara Lewis (born February 9, 1943) is an American singer and songwriter whose smooth style influenced rhythm and blues. Lewis was born in Salem (Salem Township is a general law township of Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan, located northeast of Ann Arbor). She was writing and recording by her teens with record producer Ollie McLaughlin, a black DJ at Ann Arbor radio station WHRV, now WAAM. Lewis’ first single release in 1962, the uptempo “My Heart Went Do Dat Da,” did not chart nationally, but was a local hit in the Detroit, Michigan area. She wrote all of the songs on her debut LP, including the hit “Hello Stranger” which reached #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, and featured extensive use of the Hammond organ. Lewis had moderate follow-up hits with “Straighten Up Your Heart” (#43) and her original “Puppy Love” (#38) before Bert Berns produced her million-seller “Baby I’m Yours” (U.S. #11), written by Van McCoy. Berns also produced the followup “Make Me Your Baby” (U.S. #11) which had originally been recorded by the Pixies Three, and Lewis’ final Top 40 hit “Make Me Belong to You” (#28 in 1966), written by Chip Taylor and Billy Vera. At the end of the decade, she released a grittier-sounding album on Stax Records. Over the next decade, a number of other artists had success with Lewis’ songs. Her own composition “Hello Stranger” — which had been remade in 1966 by the Capitols — was a regional hit in 1973 as remade by Fire & Rain and in 1977 Yvonne Elliman’s version reached the US Top 20 and the UK Singles Chart Top 30: Elliman’s version also topped the US Easy Listening chart for four weeks. In 1985 Carrie Lucas’ remake of “Hello Stranger” was a Top 20 R&B hit and in 2004 Queen Latifah remade “Hello Stranger” for her The Dana Owens Album. “Baby I’m Yours” charted in versions by country singer Jody Miller and Debby Boone (the B-side of her single “God Knows”). In Canada, Suzanne Stevens had a hit in 1975 with a disco version of “Make Me Your Baby”. Cover versions of her songs continue into the new millennium with the Arctic Monkeys including a version of “Baby I’m Yours” as a B-side to their 2006 single “Leave Before the Lights Come On”. In 1995, Lewis’ “Baby I’m Yours” was featured on the soundtrack for the film The Bridges of Madison County, and in 2016 “Hello Stranger” was featured on the soundtrack for the film Moonlight. She received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1999.]

Emily and Graham strive for originality in their songwriting, incorporating cello, guitar and mandolin in their songs. The duo share a unique affinity in their vocal harmonies, while Graham’s cello is “percussive as a drum, grounded as a bass or sweet as a fiddle” (Alan Morrison, The Herald)

After meeting in the inspiring setting of Edinburgh, Emily & Graham found a love for playing music with each other, staying up into the wee hours making home recordings.

Busking in the streets of their home city during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, they created quite an impact when they made their debut at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival. When in-demand playing partners Emily Kelly and Graham Coe released their full-length album, it won a huge amount of radio exposure, and reviewers unanimously agreed that something totally appealing had come on to the scene. The Sunday Herald (Scotland) made it one of their Top Albums of The Year while Maverick magazine described them as “fascinating” and said they demonstrated “originality by the bucket-load”. “Heartily recommended” by Folking.com, Acoustic magazine told readers they “kick up a heck of a storm,” while The Daily Express called the duo “a match made in heaven”.

Nico Gray has been placing the needle on the record before he was able to
read and turn pages of a book. His musical interests come from a wide variety of influences, and from learning to communicate through the sound of music and the usage of lyrical expression. Rooted in Kansas City, and growing up in front of a radio, he is a former theatre actor, performance artist, writer, and is currently a marketing and advertising consultant, where he serve Union Station. Nico is an avid concert goer, his search for his own “Original Music Soundtrack” to his life has transplanted him to the brownstones of Chicago, the rooftops of Paris, the sea-side of Marseille and the balconies of New York City. Music has served as the ‘passport’ throughout his spiritual journeys.

While the spirit of this station is kept alive by hundreds of volunteers who passionately donate their time and abilities to keep the transmission of our 100,000-watt-signal alive. We are a operated by a not-for-profit organization, incorporated over 35 years ago, called The MidCoast Radio Project. We’re non-profit, but we still have to pay the electric bill, the rent on our fully accessible production studios and offices, the insurance, and for our small staff. Even though we have hundreds of committed volunteers, who donate thousands of hours every year, producing radio shows, answering phones, creating websites, producing benefits, rewiring the board, setting up our computer system, we still need YOU, our listener, to donate to keep us alive!

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / 1980
[WMM’s theme song]

2. Boss Hog – “Save Our Souls”
from: Battle Hymns / Quasi / January 20, 2017
[Boss Hog is: Cristina Martinez on vocals, Jon Spencer on guitar, Mickey Finn on synthesizer, with Sam Coomes on organ, Janet Weiss on drums. Written by Martinez, Spencer, Finn (Madam’s Organ Music, BMI) Mixed by Alap Momin and Boss Hogg at Uptown Mixers, Harlem NY. Boss Hog was formed in 1989, as something of an accidental side project, when Cristina Martinez and Jon Spencer were told of a last minute vacancy on the bill at the influential New York punk club CBGB’s. The pair put together a group of musicians from members of The Honeymoon Killers and Unsane, along with Kurt Wolf from Pussy Galore. The gig is reported to have been an underground sensation in New York, not least because Jon performed the whole show naked. In their 27-year history the band’s releases have been relatively sporadic, but comprised four full-length albums, a mini-album, three EP’s and several singles. Between 2008 and 2010 the band played live and toured Europe and the US. Boss Hog officially announced their return in May 2016 with details of US tour dates along with an EP, Brood Star, released by In the Red Records in July 2016.[2] A new song, “17”, was released in January 2017 to herald the band’s first full-length album in 17 years – Brood X, to be released in March. Jon Spencer’s other bands include Pussy Galore, of which Martinez became a peripheral member, and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion both of which existed in parallel to Boss Hog. Battle Hymns is a compilation album created in direct response to the current political situation in the U.S.A – it is a protest record! Released digitally on inauguration day in opposition to the new administration. More information at: http://www.quasiband.com with all proceeds divided equally between Planned Parenthood, The ACLU and 350.org. Battle Hymns features new unreleased music by Doug Martsch, Stephen Malkmus, Cristina Martinez, Jon Spencer, Mickey Finn, Mac McCaughan, Ash Bowie, Carrie Brownstein, Katie Harkin, Sean Croghan, Drew Grow, Mary Timony, Carl Newman, Corin Tucker, Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey, Bill Rieflin, Kurt Bloch, Kathy Foster, Rebecca Gates, Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss, with art by Chris Johanson and Johanna Jackson. The collaboration was spearheaded and assembled by Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss of Quasi (who also serve as the backing band for some songs.) Participants generously donated their music, studios, art and time.]

3. Arcade Fire – “I Give You Power (feat. Mavis Staples)”
from: I Give You Power (feat. Mavis Staples) [Broken Speaker Mix] – Single / Infinite Content / January 27, 2017
[Released just a day before the inauguration of Donald Trump as Presidential. The song features guest vocals from singer Mavis Staples. Proceeds will be donated to ACLU. The band Tweeted a promo for the song, saying, “It’s never been more important that we stick together and take care of each other,” “I Give You Power” never mentions the president by name. It does, however, repeat: “I give you power / I can take it away / Watch me,” in an eerie call-and-response mantra. The band’s upcoming fifth album will be out in 2017. Arcade Fire is a Canadian indie rock band based in Montreal, Quebec, consisting of husband and wife Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, along with Win’s younger brother William Butler, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara. The band’s current touring line-up also includes former core member Sarah Neufeld, frequent collaborator Owen Pallett, two additional percussionists, Diol Edmond and Tiwill Duprate, and saxophonists Matt Bauder and Stuart Bogie. Founded in 2001 by friends and classmates Win Butler and Josh Deu, the band came to prominence in 2004 with the release of their critically acclaimed debut album Funeral. Their second studio album, Neon Bible, won them the 2008 Meteor Music Award for Best International Album and the 2008 Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year. Their third studio album, The Suburbs, was released in 2010 to critical acclaim and commercial success. It was the 2011 Grammy for Album of the Year, the 2011 Juno Award for Album of the Year, and the 2011 Brit Award for Best International Album. In 2013, Arcade Fire released their fourth album, Reflektor. All four of their studio albums have received nominations for the Best Alternative Music Album Grammy. 4. Billy Bragg – “I Ain’t Got No Home”
from: Tooth & Nail / Cooking Vinyl / May 17, 2013
[This song was made popular by Woody Guthrie. It was based on the old gospel song known variously as “Can’t Feel at Home” or “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore,” a version of which was recorded by the Carter Family in 1931. Recorded in five days at the home studio of musician/producer Joe Henry in South Pasadena. Tooth & Nail features 11 original songs, including one written for the Bush Theatre and this Woody Guthrie cover. Stylistically, it continued to explore genres of Americana and Alternative country, a natural progression since Mermaid Avenue Stephen William “Billy” Bragg (born 20 December 1957) is an English singer, songwriter and left-wing activist. His music blends elements of folk music, punk rock and protest songs, with lyrics that mostly span political or romantic themes. His music is heavily centered on bringing about change and getting the younger generation involved in activist causes.]

[Billy Bragg is the Keynote Speaker at this year’s Folk Alliance International Conference, Speaking on Saturday, February 18, at 4:00 pm in Century C, at Westin Crown Center.]

[Billy Bragg plays the Kansas City Folk Music Festival, Sunday, February 19, at 4:00 pm in Century C, at Westin Crown Center.]

6. Betse & Clarke – “Calico”
from: River Still Rise / Independent / July 1, 2016
[Full-length debut album, from folk duo, Betse & Clarke. Betse Ellis on fiddles, violins, viola & vocals and Clarke Wyatt on banjos and cello. Recorded during the Winter-Spring of 2016. Produced by Clarke Wyatt and Betse Ellis. Recorded and mixed by Clarke Wyatt. Final mix assistance from Chad Meise at Massive Sound. “River Still Rise,” is a collection of originals and reworked traditional compositions that are presented “to be enjoyed as a musical adventure, much like the river exploration of the famous duo Lewis & Clark, an inspiration for the band’s name.” Betse Ellis writes in the extended liner notes: “The phrase River Still Rise appears in the journals of Meriwether Lewis, and to me, most notably when the Corps of Discovery readied their boats and supplies for the beginning of their river journey. Documenting all the details of the excursion included aspects of the weather, the general demeanor or specific behavior of the crew, and most certainly the level of the river. The river needed to be high enough to be navigable, and in that way, Clarke and I have been putting together our gear and supplies, building our boat, and watching the weather signs for about a year and a half at this point. We made this recording at home with the best gear we could acquire, and with Clarke’s long-built engineering and producing knowledge.”]

[Betse & Clarke play an Official Showcase at this year’s Folk Alliance International Conference, Wednesday, February 15, at 8:15 pm, at Westin Crown Cwenter in Benton’s 20th Floor.]

10:35 – Interview with Jennifer McCartney

Jennifer McCartney, is a retired professional boxer, and single mom, and the founder of Kansas City Heroes, a group she formed in 2015, with her daughter, to advocate for single parents, disabled folk, and the disadvantaged. Jennifer and her 13 year old daughter Autumn recently traveled to Washington DC to participate in the Women’s March on Washington, on January 21, with over 500,000 people, and millions more, in sister marches, in over 600 cities around the world, all marching for the protection of civil rights, affordable health care, public education, equality, the environment, women’s safety.

Jennifer and Autumn went to the Woman’s March on Washington to show our new government leaders that we will not tolerate any kind of hate for our fellow countrymen and women. They say they “will stand and fight.”

500,000 to a million people at Women’s March on Washington, combined with huge marches in Denver, New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and 600 other cities around the world, have led to almost daily protests.

The rhetoric of the past election cycle has insulted, demonized, and threatened many women, immigrants of all statuses, those with diverse religious faiths particularly Muslim, people who identify as LGBTQIA, Native and Indigenous people, Black and Brown people, people with disabilities, the economically impoverished and survivors of sexual assault. The

The March was designed to send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world, that women’s rights are human rights.

Jennifer McCartney, is a retired professional boxer, who now works as IT/Database Specialist. Jennifer started the group, Kansas City Heroes, with her daughter Autumn, in 2015, to advocate for single parents, disabled folk, and the disadvantaged. Kansas City Heroes provides furnishings, food, and essentials to people in need. They have cleaned houses, mowed yards, and provided helpful acts of compassion.

Autumn McCartney, is Jennifer’s 13 year old daughter, and co-founder of KC Heroes. Autumn is an 8th grader at Grain Valley North Middle School, in Grain Valley, Missouri.

Jennifer McCartney currently works as a Data and Quality Improvement Specialist at Rainbow Services Inc

Jennifer McCartney has said that, “I always wanted to help others in need but I never had the money to do it so I came up with Kansas City Heroes.”

Jennifer told us, “You don’t have to have money to do the things we do for people.”

Jennifer has experienced prejudice and homophobia being a lesbian, and single mom has been rough and with all the hateful politics lately it has gotten rougher.

Jennifer told us that Kansas City Heroes treats everyone with respect and compassion and we are growing quickly. My motto is “ Be blessed by blessing others.” They are currently working to create a not-for-profit status for the organization.

Kansas City Heroes is on Facebook. For ongoing information about Women’s March on Washington you can visit: http://www.womensmarch.com

7. case/lang/veirs – “People Have the Power”
from: People Have The Power – Single / case-lang-veirs / January 20, 2017
[The supergroup of Neko Case, k.d. lang, and Laura Veirs have been performing their version of Patti Smith’s “People Have the Power” since last summer. The trio have decided to release a live version in support of the Women’s March on Washington. “We hope Patti’s message resonates with you as you march in solidarity this weekend, and during the next 4 years,” they explained in a message. The song’s cover art adopts the logo of the Women’s March on Washington with their own likenesses in the layered silhouette profiles. The band released the song through their Instagram account. Several years ago k.d. lang sent an email to Neko Case and Laura Veirs on a whim. It read simply, “I think we should make a record together.” Though the three musicians were barely more than acquaintances “Laura and I both responded immediately,” recalls Case. “There was no question.” ‘case/lang/veirs,’ was released June 14m 2016 from Anti- Records. This new album by three phenomenal, self-driven artists was released with an extensive tour. ‘case/lang/veirs’ features 14 new, original songs written by the artists over a period of two-and-a-half years. It was recorded in Portland, OR where lang and Veirs both live, and produced by Tucker Martine with the group. Sessions commenced in lang’s loft with a view of Mount St. Helens, and in Veirs’ dining room and backyard studio. ‘case/lang/veirs’ draws inspiration from alluring, mysterious subjects: a supermoon, the tumbledown story of 70s singer Judee Sill, and the “best kept secret” in Silver Lake, to name but three.]

11:48 – 90.1 is my comfort, my special companion

KKFI offers 24-7 programming, and YOU (the listener), basically get all of this amazing programming for “free.” I, for one, love that I can turn on my radio, or computer device, and tune into the 90.1 FM’s 100,000 watt, crystal-clear signal, and hear the music, information, news, entertainment, events, and stories, that I really cannot find anywhere else. 90.1 is my comfort, my special companion, my diverse friend, introducing me to all kinds of new & local music, as well as the news & information without the intrusion of commercials. It is radio brought to YOU by real people, who create these shows out of love, and are guided by KKFI’s noble mission that “seeks to stimulate, educate and entertain our audience, to reflect the diversity of the local and world community, and to provide a channel for individuals and groups, issues and music that have been overlooked, suppressed or under-represented by other media.”

Driving in your car, at the office, at the gym, in your garage, in your cubicle, in your art space, on your iPod, at your construction site, in your kitchen, in your barn, YOU can take 90.1 with you, as your companion. 90.1 FM is generally a good date. Good for a few laughs, fun to dance with, always interested in good conversation. Isn’t 90.1 FM KKFI worth a few dollars a day, or a week? So many people tune in to kkfi.org everyday, but studies show, that less than 10 percent actually donate to keep this miracle of broadcasting alive. Your support means that you will help bring this programming to folks who could not donate at this time, for whatever the reason.

This is your chance to put your money where your ears are. Please help keep, at least this part of our public airwaves, alive for our public to enjoy, free from commercials, free from religious sermonizing, free from extremely conservative and slanted right wing “talk radio” and free from corporately “owned and cloned” robotic affiliates that play the same 15 songs everyday at the same time. YOU deserve better. YOU deserve radio that really reflects our great city, and tells the story of our great music scene, and performing arts scene, and labor rights, and women’s issues, and LBGT information, and programming specifically produced for Latinos and African Americans, working people, Jazz lovers. Support the free-form spirit that is 90.1 FM KKFI!

Thank you to everyone who called in!

William Onyeabor was born on March 26, 1946, and last week on January 16, 2017, he passed away at the age of 70. Luaka Bop records spent sevral years researching and reaching out tho him and eventually gaine the rights to reissure all of his recordins, Here is Luaka Bop’s obit: “It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we have to announce that the great Nigerian business leader and mythic music pioneer William Onyeabor has passed away at the age of 70. He died peacefully in his sleep following a brief illness, at his home in Enugu, Nigeria. An extraordinary artist, businessman and visionary, Mr. Onyeabor composed and self-released 9 brilliant albums of groundbreaking electronic-funk from 1977-1985, which he recorded, pressed and printed at Wilfilms Limited—his personal pressing plant in southeast Nigeria.” According to the Luaka Bop, after Onyeabor “self-released eight albums between 1977 and 1985 he then became a born-again Christian, refusing to ever speak about himself or his music again.” The label reported that through attempting to speak with Onyeabor himself, and by talking to people who seem to have firsthand knowledge, it tried to construct an accurate biography of him for 18 months, without success. In December 2014, William Onyeabor made his first radio appearance on the Lauren Laverne Show on BBC 6 Music, where he stated “I only create music that will help the world,” whilst also admitting that he had never played live, and announcing that he had plans to release new material.
