Kasey Rausch – Guitar in Hand
+ MidCoastal and New Releases
+ Guest DJ Tim Willis

Tim Willis joined us as “Guest DJ” in our first hour. For more than 30 years Tim has worked for a large KC-based law firm. Tim Willis grew up in St. Joseph, MO, and was dazzled as a child by the eclectic mid-60s music scene. He worked part-time in a record store for 8 years. Tim has never lost his life long passion for music and for record stores, and public and community radio.

1. The Starkweathers – “Danny Taylor”
from: 5-Song [EP] / Faye Records / 1994
[“Though largely unknown, Kansas City’s Starkweathers were among the best ND bands around. As fans of both Merle Haggard and Joe Strummer, frontman Rich Smith and bassist Mike Ireland sang unironically, in gorgeous Louvin Brothers-styled harmonies, about the lives and loves of America’s dispossessed. At their finest – Ireland’s mournful “Danny Taylor” from their Faye Records 5-Song EP – the Starkweathers combined a lefty vision with an unabashedly twangy rock ‘n’ roll.” – David Cantwell, No Depression Spring 1996. With drummer Paul Lemon and guitarist Mike Lemon.]

2. Donny Hathaway – “What’s Going On”
from: Donny Hathaway Live at the Bitter End / Rhino Records / 2014 (orig. 1972)
[Recorded Aug. 24-30, 1971 at The Troubadour in Hollywood & Oct. 1971 at The Bitter End in NYC. Produced by Arif Mardin (side 1) and Jerry Wexler & Arif Mardin (side 2). Donny Edward Hathaway was born Oct. 1, 1945. He was a jazz, blues, soul, & gospel vocalist & musician. Hathaway contracted w/ Atlantic Records in 1969 and with his 1st single for the Atco label, “The Ghetto, Part I” in early 1970, Rolling Stone magazine “marked him as a major new force in soul music.” His collaborations w/ Roberta Flack scored high on the charts and won him a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for the duet, “Where Is the Love” in 1973. At the height of his career Hathaway was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was known to not take his prescribed medication regularly enough to properly control his symptoms. On January 13, 1979, Hathaway’s body was found outside the luxury hotel Essex House in NYC; his death was ruled a suicide.]

3. Stew – “Reeling”
from: Naked Dutch Painter / Smile Records / 2002
[Mark Stewart (born August 16, 1961), known by his stage name Stew, is a singer-songwriter and playwright from Los Angeles, California. In the early 1990s, he formed a band called The Negro Problem and later went on to release albums under his own name. His 2000 release Guest Host was named Album of the Year by Entertainment Weekly and his 2002 album, The Naked Dutch Painter and Other Songs, repeated that feat. He toured in support of Love’s Arthur Lee in 2002 and in 2003 he was invited to take part in the Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series of concerts. Starting in 2004, he began writing the book, lyrics and music (with Heidi Rodewald) for his semi-autobiographical rock musical Passing Strange, produced with the support of the Sundance Institute and The Public Theater, which won him the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics. Passing Strange had successful runs at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in Berkeley, California, in the fall of 2006, and off-Broadway at The Public Theater in New York City during the spring of 2007. It received critical praise from both the New York Times and Variety and opened on Broadway at the Belasco Theatre in February 2008 under the aegis of producer Liz McCann and the Shubert Organization. The play garnered seven Tony nominations in 2008, with Stew receiving four nominations and winning the award for Best Book. The play closed in July 2008, with Spike Lee filming the final performances for a feature film which screened at the Sundance Festival in Jan. 2009.]

4. Moondog and the London Saxophonic
– “1st movement from Toot Suite No. 1 in F Major”
from: Sax Pax for a Sax / Atlantic Records / 1994
[Born Louis Thomas Hardin (May 26, 1916 – September 8, 1999). Moondog was a composer, musician, poet and inventor of several musical instruments. He was blind from the age of 16. In New York from the late 1940s until he left in 1972, he could often be found on 6th Avenue between 52nd and 55th Street wearing a cloak and Viking-style helmet, sometimes busking or selling music, but often just standing silent and still. He was widely recognized as “the Viking of 6th Avenue” by thousands of passersby and residents who had no idea that this seemingly homeless eccentric standing on “Moondog’s corner” was a respected and recorded composer and musician. He was not homeless however, or at least not often; he maintained an apartment in upper Manhattan and had a country retreat in Candor, NY, to which he moved in 1972. He partially supported himself by selling copies of his poetry and his musical philosophy. In addition to his music and poetry, he was also known for the distinctive fanciful “Viking” cloak that he wore. Already bearded and long-haired, he added a Viking-style horned helmet to avoid the occasional comparisons of his appearance with that of Christ or a monk, as he had rejected Christianity in his late teens. He developed a lifelong interest in Nordic mythology, and maintained an altar to Thor in his country home in Candor. In 1947 Hardin had adopted the pen name “Moondog” in honor of a dog “who used to howl at the moon more than any dog I knew of.” In 1949 he traveled to a Blackfoot Sun Dance in Idaho where he performed on percussion and flute, returning to the Native American music he first came in contact with as a child. It was this Native music, along with contemporary jazz and classical, mixed with the ambient sounds from his environment (city traffic, ocean waves, babies crying, etc.) that created the foundation of Moondog’s music. In 1954, he won a case in the New York State Supreme Court against disc jockey Alan Freed, who had branded his radio show, “The Moondog Rock and Roll Matinee”, around the name “Moondog”, using “Moondog’s Symphony” (the first record that Moondog ever cut) as his “calling card”. Moondog believed he would not have won the case had it not been for the help of musicians such as Benny Goodman and Arturo Toscanini, who testified that he was a serious composer. Freed had to apologize and stop using the nickname “Moondog” on air, on the basis that Hardin was known by the name long before Freed began using it.]

5. Amanda Shires – “Look Like a Bird”
from: Down Fell the Doves / Lightning Rod Records / 2013
[From her 5th solo release. Amanda Shires (born March 5, 1982) is an American singer-songwriter and violin player. She has performed as a member of the Texas Playboys, Thrift Store Cowboys and Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, in a duo with Rod Picott, and has released four solo albums. Following her parents’ divorce, Shires’ childhood was divided between the Texas cities of Lubbock and Mineral Wells. She acquired her first violin at the age of ten from a pawn shop in Mineral Wells. At the age of 15 she joined the Texas Playboys, the former backing band for Western swing legend Bob Wills.]

7. Sam Baker – “Angel Hair”
from Cotton / Music Road Records / 2012
[Sam Baker was born in 1954 in Itasca, Texas. He attended Itasca High School, where he played varsity football. In 1986, Baker was traveling by train to Machu Picchu in Peru when a bomb placed on a luggage rack above his head by the Shining Path guerrilla group exploded, killing seven other passengers including the three people who had been sitting with him. Baker was left with numerous injuries, including brain damage, a cut artery, and blown-in eardrums. His injuries required 17 reconstructive surgeries. He has a constant case of tinnitus and the fingers of his left hand were left gnarled. He did retain enough dexterity to grasp a guitar pick and over time, re-taught himself to play his guitar left-handed. Previous to the bombing, Baker had worked as a bank examiner and whitewater river guide.]

8. Willie Wright – “Nantucket Island”
from: Telling the Truth / self-released / 1977 (rereleased by Numero / 2011)
[Born William C. Gathright, July 7, 1939, a soul singer and songwriter. He was born in Belen, Mississippi. In his teens he sang with friends George Bragg and Harry Jensen in a Harlem, New York City doo-wop group, The Persuaders. Later, the three formed the Willie Wright Trio. Wright then began performing as a solo singer and songwriter in clubs in Greenwich Village, and also played flute with The Three Degrees. He turned down offers to sign with a major label, and according to his current record label “deliberately chose artistic freedom over the sharecropper’s existence to which many of the best artists of his generation were subjected.” He moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he continued to sing in clubs, setting up his own label, Hotel Records, in 1969, and releasing a single. In the early 1970s, he released his first album, Lack of Education, which mostly contained cover versions of other musicians’ songs, including Curtis Mayfield’s “Right On For The Darkness”. In 1976 he began performing for tourists and vacationers at Nantucket. He decided to move there, and started to write more songs. The following year he recorded a second album, Telling the Truth, in New York. The album was described by Allmusic as “a deeply personal set that delved into Wright’s attitudes about his life, his relationships with women, and the children he’d fathered but left behind”, and featured “spare, intimate arrangements…[and] austere production… dictated by the fact it was recorded in a single day.” He again released the album himself, and mainly sold it at performances. In the early 1990s he moved to Providence, Rhode Island, where he continued to perform. He retired from live performance in 2002, after recording and releasing a live album, Brother Bill. “Right On For The Darkness” was included on several compilation albums of rare soul music, and was recognised as a highly collectible record, but Wright remained a relatively obscure figure until 2011, when Telling the Truth was reissued on CD by the Numero Group. The interest that this generated led Wright, despite the onset of Parkinson’s disease, to record a new album, This Is Not A Dream, in Burlington, Vermont. The album was issued by Green Coil Records in 2012.]

9. Suba – “Felicidade”
from Sao Paulo Confessions / Ziriguiboom / Nov. 1, 1999 [Six Degrees Records / 2001 / US]
[São Paulo Confessions is an album by the Serbian-born musician Suba—his musical account of life in that humid, foggy, and manic megalopolis. Core musicians on the album are then 21-year-old vocalist Cibelle, and veteran percussionist João Parahyba; additional musicians include mangue band Mestre Ambrósio, and guitarists Roberto Frejat, Edgar Scandurra, and Andre Geraissatti, and vocalists Katia B., Taciana, Joana Jones and Arnaldo Antunes. Suba died just a few days after the release of his album São Paulo Confessions, and shortly before the completion of Bebel Gilberto’s acclaimed Tanto Tempo, the biggest selling Brazilian album outside Brazil.]

The album reached #26 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart. The group often features guest vocalists, including Denise Brown, Katie Jackson, and Malcolm Kirby.]

Undeterred, Berwanger put together a new band—a country-rock outfit called The Only Children–and would go on to release two criminally underrated records (2004’s Change of Living and 2007’s Keeper of Youth) before pulling the plug on that project and taking a job doing the next most logical thing possible– coaching high school basketball in Lawrence.]

What is Synesthesia?

from wikipedia: Synesthesia (also spelled synæsthesia or synaesthesia; from the Ancient Greek σύν syn, “together”, and αἴσθησις aisthēsis, “sensation”) is a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. People who report such experiences are known as synesthetes.

In one common form of synesthesia, known as grapheme → color synesthesia or color-graphemic synesthesia, letters or numbers are perceived as inherently colored. In spatial-sequence, or number form synesthesia, numbers, months of the year, and/or days of the week elicit precise locations in space (for example, 1980 may be “farther away” than 1990), or may appear as a three-dimensional map (clockwise or counterclockwise).

Sondra Freeman and Kristie Stremel on the November 5, 2014 Wednesday MidDay Medley

1. PRETTY – “Mustache In Your Face” (Vinyl)
from Local Customs: Cavern Sounds / Numero Group / October 24
[In 1967 you could rent Cavern Studios for $40.00 per hour, and you could have your sessions mastered and pressed into 500, 45-rpm, 7-inch records for $175.00. Cavern Studios were located underground in a former limestone mine in Independence, Missouri. Numero Group, the label that serve as musical achealogists digging up and preserving forgotten and lost recordings, and music scenes from the past, and who last year brought us a collection from Kansas City’s Forte Records, and have just released: Local Custom: Cavern Sound, featuring 24 songs from 18 different acts who cut records at Cavern.]

[“Hailing from Kansas City, Pretty were more famously known as the Fabulous Four, a local beat combo that ground their way through the K.C. club scene from 1959 to 1976. In 1969, they buried themselves in a hole in a Missouri hillside, known as the Cavern Recording Studio, alongside Electric Prunes drummer Michael “Quint” Weakley. Together, they churned out eight tracks as Pretty — earthy, grooving hard rock pushed to the hilt with stuttering, psychedelic Wurlitzer work and some supremely heeeeeavy fuzzed-out electric guitar riffs. The title track, “Mustache in Your Face,” is the pick of this litter, featuring hilariously incongruous lyrics about “a girl/yeah yeah,” “the devil and the monkeys are comin’ upstairs,” and “what a lie, what a lie/mustache in your face.” Don’t bother trying to parse out the sentiments, just keep these psychedelic scorchers on rotation; all the b-sides are killers in their own rights. -Michael Stasiak (January 25, 2013)]

[Bob Theen told Garage Hangover: “To my knowledge the record was not distributed at all. After the sessions, Weekly took off for California to try and sell them to someone. Don’t think he had any luck, and we didn’t see much of him after that.” ]

[Bob Theen, Jeff Mann, Mike Myers, Mark Higbee, & original drummer Alex Love On were inducted into the Kansas Music Hall Of Fame on March 22, 2008, as The Fabulous Four Band]

[5th studio release of King Tuff who is Kyle Thomas, who also records with Burger Records and is currently on tour in Europe.]

3. Steve Grand – “Stay (Radio Edit)”
from: Stay (Radio Edit) – Single / Grand Nation / September 4, 2013
[Born Feb. 28, 1990, Steve Grand is a musician and singer-songwriter from Lemont, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. He became an overnight internet celebrity and was acclaimed by some to be the first openly gay male country musician to attract mainstream attention in the United States. Kristie told Tim Finn in the KC Star, “The weight of bringing a new, little creature home was a little overwhelming at first,” she said. “But it has been everything I wanted it to be. But I can’t see giving up music for anything.” Stremeltone Records, was created in her home in Lawrence. The last track, “It’s Enough” was released early, as a video, featuring photos of couples in partenerships, relationships, marriages, unions, families. The bill eventually died in the Kansas Senate.]

10:32 – Interview with Kristie Stremel

Described as “Joan Jett & Tom Petty’s love child,” and armed with her guitar, fueled by coffee, and over 75 published songs, singer, songwriter, producer, rock & roll mom, Kristie Stremel has had a very busy year. Last October, 2013 Kristie and her partner, Lori Isabell, welcomed their adopted baby son, Charlie, into their family. In April, Kristie released her 6th solo record, and the 9th full-length release of her musical career of over 20 years. Released on her own label, Stremeltone, it was Kristie’s first self-produced album. This summer Kristie went to work producing a new full length CD and book called “Wildflowers,” a compilation of 14 original songs & 5 poems for and about children, illustrated by Blue Haas. Kristie also recently released a new single “Love Makes A Family” with read-along book for the song she wrote for her son Charlie in an effort to explain the importance of family and to help celebrate the diversity in families today.

Kristie Stremel’s solo release “Songwriter,” was her first self produced record that was mixed by Lou Whitney famed musician and producer who in 2001 produced her first solo full-length, “All I Really Want,” for Slewfoot Records. It was just a month ago that we lost Lou, who was 72 and was battling cancer, but still playing in his band Outland through 2013. Kristie has said that Lou Whitney was… “my mentor, a father figure,”

About Kristie, Lou told Tim Finn in the KC Star: “I thought she had all the ingredients,” he said. “The songs were poppy efforts to write songs that might actually do something. She was writing personal stuff but couching it in this rock-pop way.”

Chris Meck, who played lead guitar on the 2001, release, “All I Really Want” joined in on “Songwriter” and helped with “Wildflowers.” Chris and Kristie hadn’t played together in over 10 years.

Chris Meck is known for the bands: The Gaslights, Atlantic Fadeout, and Tiny Horse, with Abigail Henderson.

His new band is: Chris Meck and The Guilty Birds.

Stremeltone Records, with studios created in Kristie’s home in Lawrence, gives her the flexibility to work from home, and is also part of the musical evolution where musicians are their own agents, producers, labels, marketing, tour managers. Working from home, multi-tasking, taking care of a growing baby boy, while also recording a record, was all part of the evolution that led Kristie to make “Wildflowers.”

One week before she was set to duet her new band and two weeks before opening her bar in Strawberry Hill called Barcadia, Anna fell 6 feet through an open cellar door to her basement, fracturing a vertebrae in her lower back. He has released two EPs, as well as the albums Messenger and The Great Despiser. While working as a carpenter in Chicago after dropping out of the University of North Carolina, Pug wrote and recorded what would eventually become his debut EP, Nation of Heat. Its literate lyrics received widespread acclaim and Pug’s unorthodox promotional strategy of distributing free CDs to anyone interested in sharing his music resulted in the EP selling over 20,000 copies. After touring with Steve Earle in 2009, Pug was signed by Nashville indie label Lightning Rod Records and released Messenger in 2010. After moving to Austin, Pug released The Great Despiser in 2012. Pug’s acclaimed narrative songwriting has led critics to omparie him to John Prine and Bob Dylan. ]

19. Sara Swenson – “Darling Dear”
from: Runway Lights / Independent / July 18, 2014
[Critically acclaimed singer songwriter Sara Swenson has released some of our most played and favorite recordings of the last 7 years. Her self titled debut recording was originally released in 2008 and was at the top of our list of The 100 Best Recordings of 2009. In 2010 Sara Swenson released her second full length recording, “All Things Big and Small” again working with Don Chaffer in Nashville who added new layers to Sara’s great songs and voice. In Novenber of 2011, Sara released her 5 song EP called “Never Left My Mind,” featuring her band, The Pearl Snaps. In that time frame, she also had picked up two Kansas City Singer-Songwriter of the Year awards, performed with Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair, and placed a song on the season finale of ABC’s “Private Practice.” Then after the school year ended in 2012, Sara Swenson left her job as a High School English and Journalism Teacher in Platte County High School, and flew off to the United Kingdom, where she ended up getting married to her husband. This spring, Sara returned to Kansas City and performed for the Folk Alliance International Conference. This summer she released her fourth studio album that captures snapshots of her 18-month experience of living abroad, moving from dating to marriage and sorting through the accompanying transitions and emotions.
