The Kansas City based, 5-piece band, Rachel Mallin and The Wild Type who join us to share new music from their debut EP, Degenerate Matters to be released on July 30, 2016. This indie synthpop band includes: Rachel Mallin on lead vocals & guitar, Justin Walker on bass, Austin Edmisten on drums & back-up vocals, Jesse Bartmess on synthesizers & keyboards, Matt Kosinski on lead guitar.

Rachel Mallin and The Wild Type play recordBar, Friday, July 29, with Pink Royal, and Spirit is The Spirit.

Rachel Mallin, Justin Walker, Jesse Bartmess, Matt Kosinski, Thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley. (Austin Edmisten couldn’t make it.)

We fell in love with Rachel Mallin’s September 12, 2014, 4-track solo EP release, The Persistence of Vision, that she recorded during the summer of 2014, at the age of 19. Rachel Mallin wrote recorded, mixed, and produced the songs in the basement of her mom’s house in Gladstone, MO. The EP was co-mixed by Michael Kessler, and mastered by William Reeves at Centro Cellar Studio.

Just over one year ago, founder Rachel Mallin was sitting in a University of Missouri lecture hall scrambling to complete the last final exam of her sophomore year when she received a text from Justin Walker, close friend and bassist for The Wild Type. The then 20-year-old coed had spent a chaotic year taking classes, working, and composing soundtracks for indie filmmakers, while working on lyrics and music for a new band. Walker’s text announced in ALL CAPS that her recently self-produced, original song, “Razorback” was broadcasting live on an alternative radio station in her hometown, KC.

Rachel Mallin & The Wild Type also revealed a new song: “Something Wicked” on the compilation series How To Keep Dreaming Volume 1, from The Record Machine released September 10, 2015. More info at: http://www.HowToKeepDreaming.com.

Rachel Mallin’s songs “Razorback” and “Noise of the Night” were broadcast by on radio stations in Kansas City and nationally.

In 2015 Rachel formed a band called The Wild Type

11:42

17. Rachel Mallin & The Wild Type – “13” (LIVE)
A cover of the Big Star song with Rachel Mallin on vocals and guitar, Justin Walker on acoustic bass, Jesse Bartmess on keys, Matt Kosinski on harmony vocals.

Degenerate Matters was recorded, produced, and mastered by Joel Nanos at Element Recording Studios.

Musical Arrangements written and performed by Rachel Mallin, Justin Walker, Austin Edmisten, Jesse Bartmess, and Matt Kosinski and lyrics written by Rachel Mallin.

At Element Recording Studios, audio engineer Joel Nanos (Madisen Ward & The Mama Bear, Radkey and Republic Tigers) recorded and produced the band’s first collaborative project, Degenerate Matters, a four track EP which includes original songs: “Cash4Gold”, “Dance Card”, “Dropout”, and “White Girls”.

Mallin’s vocals, which lazily drift alongside Edmisten’s harmonic accompaniment with charming sarcasm and quips of disdain, are a lyric & rhythmic reflection of the generational culture of collegiate discontent. In perfect complement, the sonic textures of Kosinski’s guitar arrangements and Bartmess’ atmospheric synth lines float on the surface of Walker’s soul-biased bass licks to uniquely recreate a pop-surf vibe nostalgic of 50’s/60’s doo-wop. The songs have been previewed to critical acclaim at SXSW Music Festival, Ink’s Middle of the Map Fest, and top performance venues across the Midwest.

Jesse Bartmess who also records as Sinple has been a frequent contributor to Wednesday MidDay Medley.

Rachel Mallin, Justin Walker, Jesse Bartmess, Matt Kosinski, Thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley.

11:30 – Interview with Diane Hightower

Diane Hightower is someone I’ve known since 1990 when we both were part of a group of performers and artists and activists known as Big Bang Buffet. I’ve known Diane as a friend, a photographer, and a documentary film maker, as an animal rescuer, as a human rights activist, as a mom, a wife, a survivor, and now as a playwright. Diane Hightower joins us to share information about her new original play that will be featured at the 2016 KC Fringe Festival, The Last Michigan, takes place in August 2015, during the last year of the 40-year running, Michigan Women’s Music Festival. Diane Hightower’s show runs July 22 through July 30, at The Buffalo Room. More information at: http://www.kcfringe.org

We just heard Toshi Reagan who played the 40th annual Michican Women’s Music Festival, August 7, 2015, ”The Last Michigan.”

Diane Hightower was at The Last Michigan.

Background on Michigan Women’s Michigan Festival:

Michigan Women’s Music Festival, called “the Original Womyn’s Woodstock” and often referred to as MWMF or Michfest, was an international feminist music festival held every August from 1976 to 2015 in Oceana County, Michigan, USA, near Hart Township, in a small wooded area known as “The Land.” The event was completely built, staffed, run and attended by women. The 40th Festival, in August 2015, was the last one.

As a private, women-only camping event, the Michigan festival was founded in 1976 by 19-year-old Lisa Vogel, who, with sister Kristie Vogel and friend Mary Kindig, planned an event along the lines of the recent Boston Women’s Music Festival and the Midwest Women’s Festival. Attendance ranges from 3,000 to 10,000.

Women build all of the stages, run the lighting and sound systems, make the trash collection rounds, serve as electricians, mechanics, security, medical and psychological support, cook meals for thousands over open fire pits, provide childcare, and facilitate workshops covering various topics of interest to the attendees, who are referred to as “festies”. Hundreds of women spend upwards of a month out on the land building the festival from the ground up because every year the festival is torn down, leaving the land as close to how it was found as possible

Diane Hightower’s play The Last Michigan is fictional piece, but she does bring themes from her real life into the story. In the play, The characters of Annie and Michelle are in a longtime relationship. Michelle a cancer survivor. Diane is a four time survivor of cancer and is also in a long term relationship with her wife and they have two sons.

Synopsis: Annie is driven to the edge by her cravings for physical touch; Michelle struggles to feel more confident about her cancer-ravaged body. What starts out as a carefree journey to the annual women’s music festival of Michigan turns into unanswered questions about what makes a relationship work. Come along for the journey as this new play follows two lesbians into a secret forest full of feminists.

Starring Wendy Buchheit, Stephanie Spalding, Rebecca Ralstin, and Anita Davis.

Directed by Emerson Rapp. 60m R (adult language, simulated sex scene)

The Last Michigan at Buffalo Room, 817 Westport Rd, KCMO.

16. Betse & Clarke – “In This World”
from: River Still Rise / Independent / July 1, 2016
[Full-length debutalbum, from traditional and future folk duo, Betse & Clarke Betse Ellis on fiddles, violins, viola & vocals and Clarke Wyatt on banjos and cello. Recorded during the Winter-Spring of 2016. Produced by Clarke Wyatt and Betse Ellis. Recorded and mixed by Clarke Wyatt/ Final mix assistance from Chad Meise at Massive Sound. “River Still Rise,” is a collection of originals and reworked traditional compositions that are presented “to be enjoyed as a musical adventure, much like the river exploration of the famous duo Lewis & Clark, an inspiration for the band’s name.” Betse Ellis writes in the extended liner notes: “The phrase River Still Rise appears in the journals of Meriwether Lewis, and to me, most notably when the Corps of Discovery readied their boats and supplies for the beginning of their river journey. Documenting all the details of the excursion included aspects of the weather, the general demeanor or specific behavior of the crew, and most certainly the level of the river. The river needed to be high enough to be navigable, and in that way, Clarke and I have been putting together our gear and supplies, building our boat, and watching the weather signs for about a year and a half at this point. The process of recording RSR took several months, beginning in early 2016. We made this recording at home with the best gear we could acquire at this point, and with Clarke’s long-built engineering and producing knowledge.”]

[Betse & Clarke play the Jackson Hotel in Paola Kansas, Saturday, July 23, at 7:00 PM]

[In August and September Betse & Clarke will tour the United Kingdom, and Ireland]

9. Bobby Watson & The I Have a Dream Project – “My Song ” [feat. Glenn North]
from: Check Cashing Day / Lafiya Music / Aug. 28, 2013
[Watson chose to concentrate on the reason why over 300,000 people, black and white, gathered in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963. Dr. King spoke of coming to Washington to cash a 100 year old check, a moral check that the founding fathers wrote into the Declaration of Independence, but to this day, the check keeps coming back marked ‘insufficient funds.’ Introducing poet and spoken word artist Glenn North from KCMO, Check Cashing Day is a concept recording with 15 tracks portrayed in the vein of musical theatre. “I asked Glenn to put some poetry, from his perspective, to several of my compositions” comments Watson. “It was my desire with this project to produce poetry that would in some ways cleanse the soul,” notes North. In addition, Watson’s release features trumpeter Hermon Mehari, pianist Richard Johnson, drummer Eric Kennedy, flutist Horace Washington, and trombonist Karita Carter.]

11:15 – Interview with Judy Mills

After paying her dues and building a successful resume in corporate retail, Judy Mills took the leap of faith that Kansas City needed a record store to buy new vinyl and she opened Mills Record Company on May 3, 2013. During these past three years the store has expanded into the space next door, doubling their size and giving them the opportunity to bring in used records too, and expand their stage for in-store performances. Now in just the last week Mills Record Company has moved from their original Westport Rd. location, just around the corner to their new home, 4045 Broadway, giving them even more square footage to add thoudsands more records, a bigger, more dedicated live stage performance area, and Mills will host 6 nights of in-store, Moving Celebrations starting: Friday, July 8, with Real Adults, Thunderclaps, Conductor Williams & Weaver, and Not A Planet; and Saturday, July 9, featuring The Shuttlecock Showcase, with Deaton Chris Anthony, Kye Colors, Explicit Content, and Narc Parade.

The State of vinyl. Since Mills opened on May 3, 2013, several other record stores have newly opened including: Revolution Records, Josey Records, Records With Merritt, Brothers Music, joining the previously established: Vinyl Underground at Seventh Heaven, It’s A Beautiful Day and Renaissance Records in Overland Park. Many retail outlets like Half priced Books and Barnes & Noble are now selling new vinyl, it would appear that our community of music lovers is able to support all of these outlets, where just 9 years ago all of our record store were dying. What happened?

17. Esperanza Spalding – “One”
from: Emily’s D+Evolution (Deluxe Edition) / Concord Music Group / March 4, 2016
[5th album from an American jazz bassist, cellist and singer, Esperanza Emily Spalding, born October 18, 1984, who draws upon many genres in her own compositions. A concept album revolving around a central character named Emily (Spalding’s middle name), Emily’s D+Evolution is not a jazz album — though jazz does inform much of the music here. Instead, Spalding — who also co-produced the album alongside legendary producer Tony Visconti (David Bowie) — builds the release largely around angular, electric guitar-rich prog rock, kinetic, rhythmically rich jazz fusion, and lyrically poetic pop. Spalding was raised in Portland, Oregon and was a musical prodigy, playing violin in the Chamber Music Society of Oregon at age five. She was later both self-taught and trained on a number of instruments, including guitar and bass. Her proficiency earned her scholarships to Portland State University and the Berklee College of Music. She has won four Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Award for Best New Artist at the 53rd Grammy Awards, making her the first jazz artist to win the award. Of her new album Pitchfork writes, “These are exuberant, confrontational songs, amplified in the same sort of rock/funk hybrid style that brings Prince and Janelle Monae to mind. Gone is the Afro, replaced with long braids, wide-rimmed glasses, and ornate outfits.”.]

18. case/lang/veirs – “1000 Miles Away”
from: case/lang/veirs / Anti- Records / June 14, 2016
[Several years ago k.d. lang sent an email to Neko Case and Laura Veirs on a whim. It read simply, “I think we should make a record together.” Though the three musicians were barely more than acquaintances “Laura and I both responded immediately,” recalls Case. “There was no question.” ‘case/lang/veirs,’ is a new album by three phenomenal, self-driven artists was released with an extensive tour to follow. ‘case/lang/veirs’ features fourteen new, original songs written by the artists over a period of two-and-a-half years. It was recorded in Portland, OR where lang and Veirs both live, and produced by Tucker Martine with the group. Sessions commenced in lang’s loft with a view of Mount St. Helens, and in Veirs’ dining room and backyard studio. ‘case/lang/veirs’ draws inspiration from alluring, mysterious subjects: a supermoon, the tumbledown story of 70s singer Judee Sill, and the “best kept secret” in Silver Lake, to name but three.]

Michael Eugene Archer was born February 11, 1974, better known as D’Angelo. Born in Richmond, Virginia, the son of a Pentecostal minister, he began teaching himself piano as a very young child, and at age 18 he won the amateur talent competition at Harlem’s Apollo Theater three weeks in a row. After briefly being a member of a hip-hop group called I.D.U., his first major success came in 1994 as the co-writer and co-producer of “U Will Know”. His debut solo album, Brown Sugar, released in July 1995, received rave reviews and sold over two million copies. Along with artists like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, and collaborator Angie Stone, D’Angelo became part of the Neo soul movement. D’Angelo became more uncomfortable with his growing status as a sex symbol. This was followed by numerous personal struggles including alcoholism, and a fourteen-year musical hiatus. ]
