[Formed in Lawrence, Kansas in 1997 by Josh Berwanger, James David, Christian Jankowski, Adrianne Verhoeven and Justin Roelofs. The Anniversary was the solidification of a line-up that had been in flux for a year. After two years of playing shows across with the Midwest with bands that included The Get Up Kids, Braid and Superchunk, The Anniversary signed to Vagrant Records. Originally perceived as a poppy, keyboard-driven emo band with the release of their debut album Designing a Nervous Breakdown in 2000, they developed a stronger, classic rock-influenced sound with the release of a split CD with Superdrag in 2001 and their second full length, 2002’s Your Majesty. After touring heavily throughout 2002 and 2003, The Anniversary began demoing tracks for what would be their third full length. But four years of constant touring and personal strains within the group led to the band’s demise in early 2004.

Barclay Martin and Rabbi Moti Rieber join us to discuss the Concert Against Campus Carry, at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, Kansas, on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 7:00 PM. Performers include: Victor & Penny, Barclay Martin Ensemble, and Minimal Animal. Proceeds to benefit Kansans Against Campus Carry. This event is presented by Kansans Against Campus Carry, and Kansas Interfaith Action.

Rabbi Moti Rieber is Executive Director of Kansas Interfaith Action.

“CONCERT AGAINST CAMPUS CARRY” at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, Kansas, on September 25, 2016, at 7:30 PM is Part of National “Concert Across America” Against Gun Violence

On Sunday, September 25, 2016, Kansans Against Campus Carry will be hosting a “Concert Against Campus Carry” at Liberty Hall in Lawrence. This concert is a kickoff to our statewide campaign to prevent “campus carry” (the conceal carry of firearms on public college and university campuses in Kansas) from coming into effect, as scheduled, on July 1, 2017.

This concert is also part of a national Concert Across America to End Gun Violence on that same day, which is the Congressionally designated day of Remembrance of Murder Victims. There are over 600 concert events scheduled, and you can see them (and ours) listed at concertacrossamerica.org.

The Lawrence Concert Against Campus Carry is intended to raise awareness of the issue of campus carry, and of our campaign against it. It is also a benefit concert, with proceeds to go for the #failcampuscarry efforts throughout the state.

The concert will feature three musical performers:

Victor & Penny—since 2010, this ukulele-and-guitar duo have been delighting audiences nationally with their deft blend of originals, hot jazz and offbeat pop standards. V&P infuse their music with a strong sense of swing rooted in the riff-driven style of Kansas City jazz to create their own distinctive style.

Barclay Martin Ensemble— A blend of singer/songwriter folk, pop, and world music, Barclay Martin’s songs are a celebration of culture that could only come through traveling the world. Through his love of music and the gift of travel, Martin realized the role that music has to play in celebrating work that uplifts us all. Music can serve as photographs of who we are as people—it can also serve as a reminder of how connected we are.

Minimal Animal—Minimal Animal is a local Lawrence band with a strong student following. Folksy, bluesy, indie rock rich with harmonies – their music is familiar enough to feel comfortable but with enough turns to keep the listener engaged.

Nate Bowman of the band Attic Light, on the August 24, 2016 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley

Nate Bowman of the band Attic Light, on the August 24, 2016 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley

Nate Bowman, is the founder and lead singer of the Kansas City based 4-piece band, Attic Light, who just recently finished several weeks of Midwest tour dates in support of their second EP, The EXILE, recorded in Nashville and released on March 18. Attic Light is Nate Bowman on vocals & guitar, Michael Pittman on guitar, Patrick Rippeto on bass, and Joseph Dillman on drums. Attic Light just released a new single called, “Hot in Kansas City.” Attic Light will play Springfield, Missouri on Friday, August 26, for Deitra Magazine, Attic Light also play Santa Cali Gon on Friday, September 2.

Nate Bowman, thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley.

Attic Light started back in 2012 with Nate and bassist and friend, Patrick Rippeto. They started playing shows and released an EP called Different Shades of Black in 2014. The band found their current drummer Joseph Dillman and guitarist Michael Pittman, and started writing the Exile EP.

Their new single “Hot In Kansas City” was recorded with Joel Nanos at Element Recording in Kansas City.

Along with being a singer and guitarist and songwriter with Attic Light, Nate also works as an Instructor at Park University, and a Stage Carpenter at Kansas City Repertory Theatre, and he is working on his PhD at Kansas University.

Nate Bowman graduated from Excelsior Springs High in 2007.

He studied Theatre and Philosophy at Northwest Missouri State University where he graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy.

Nate focused on Religious Studies at The University of Kansas from August 2013 to May 2015 where he received his Master Degree.

Nate is currently pursuing his PhD in Theatre, at Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas.

Since July 21, 2012, Nathan has been married to Elizabeth Bettendorf Bowman who is originally from Wahoo Nebraska.

In a May 10, 2016 interview with The Pitch Kansas City, Music Editor Natalie Gallagher asked Nate, “Is it hard to stay ambitious with so many obligations?” Nate answered, “With regard to ambition, I think you just have to get out there. We’re not making any money on music sales — any income we have as a band comes from playing shows. So in terms of keeping the band financed, it comes from touring and traveling, and it gets the music out there. I don’t think any of us would say that what we’re doing as a hobby.” Nate continued, “We’re very ambitious, at least from my point of view. It’s not a hobby for us. What little free time I have from my job is spent on the band, because we’re also independent, so I also manage the band. Outside of actually playing and writing and rehearsing, I spend 20 hours a week maintaining our website and social-media presence.”

Attic Light’s second EP, The EXILE, recorded in Nashville contains the song, “Whiskey Love,” the lead single from The EXILE that was also made into a music-video that caught the attention of Paste Magazine, who included it in their May 24, 2016 edition. The video was created in collaboration with by J. Rieger and Co.

Of Montreal’s musical style has evolved from vaudeville and Beatles-influenced psychedelic twee pop to a mixture of electronica, funk, glam, and afrobeat music influenced by Prince and David Bowie. Kevin Barnes has described this album by stating, “Forever I’ve been detached from current music. I got into this bubble of only being in some other time period. 11:00 – Interview with IVØRY BLACK and Keenan Franklin

IVØRY BLACK and Keenan Franklin on the August 17, 2016 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley.

IVØRY BLACK and Keenan Franklin on the August 17, 2016 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley.

Singer, songwriter, rock & roller, IVØRY BLACK was born in 1986 in Peoria Illinois. Given up for adopted at the age of four, it was difficult to find trust in people after living with eight different foster families, before running away at 15, moving from Indiana to Oklahoma and eventually ending up in Seattle. In 2011, after a friend sent a plane ticket, Ivory landed in the Kansas City area, and has became a part of new family. Over the past several years Ivory has been performing in singer-songwriter showcases and area venues and on June 23, 2015, Ivory released the debut EP, Ready Get Set.

IVØRY is playing the Crossroads Music Fest, September 10. IVØRY BLACK will play Davey’s Uptown 3402 Main St, Saturday, August 20, with American Slim, and The Fade.

IVØRY BLACK, thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley.

IVØRY brought along Keenan Franklin who plays bass in her band.

Since we last talked with IVØRY on the radio her music is being played on other radio stations, including The Bridge. IVØRY has been playing regularly in area music venues, including Middle of The Map Fest, UMKC LGBTQIA Prom, Briarfest, The Susan G Komen Run for the Cure Race and the upcoming Crossroads Music Fest.

IVORY BLACK is currently involved in a name change to IVØRY BLACK. Another artist named Ivory Black, from California, owns the trademark on the name. IVØRY BLACK with the Ø, is the new name. The California based Ivory Black’s attorney is also her father. IVØRY and her manager Klaartje received a “cease and desist” letter giving them a limited time to change their name. IVØRY BLACK is the new name. IVØRY’s manager Klaartje had to delete the EP from their site and iTUNES, and had to change all publishing and social media sites.

Klaartje Van Lue is IVØRY BLACK’s manager and she was the one who helped her find her way to KC.

Born in 1986 Peoria Illinois, IVØRY BLACK is formerly known as Devin James Miclette, set forth on a journey that inspired years of material built by the experiences of their past.

Growing up in a world where music was a way of self expressing oneself and turning to in times of trouble, it was inevitable that IVØRY would turn to it when waters were the roughest. “My parents listened to a lot of classics such as Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, The Rolling Stones, and Tom Petty just to name a few”, IVØRY has said. One of which, when a child, IVØRY almost burned out a Robbie Dupree single “Steal Away’’ due to the catchy rhythms and melody of the song. “I wasn’t really allowed to listen to newer things, ultimately cause of how conventional my parents really were.”

11:07

11. IVØRY BLACK – “Third Degree” (Live)
also available on: Ready Get Set EP / Independent / June 23, 2015

IVØRY is playing the Crossroads Music Fest, September 10.

IVØRY BLACK will play Davey’s Uptown 3402 Main St, August 20, with American Slim, and The Fade.

Even though being independent has proven difficult for some musicians to be discovered, Ivory sees no competition but an opportunity to be a part of the underground music scene, and continue to grow and move forward gaining new confidence, and working to get the music out to new listeners.

IVØRY BLACK is currently working on a new album

10:23

12. IVØRY BLACK – “Raging Reality” (Live)
(One of IVØRY’s older songs, written 8 years ago.)

IVØRY BLACK is currently working on a complete revamp of how the shows will be performed. The band is now a 4-piece with a keyboardist/guitarist/back vocalist, drummer, and bass player.

IVØRY BLACK is working to touring next year.

IVØRY BLACK was part of the Ryan Wilks Art exhibition “Gender Treason” at Leedy Voulkos Gallery

IVØRY BLACK will be seen in new series about music and cocktails on The Bridge 90.9

13. Charlie Parker – “Yardbird Suite”
from: The Complete Savoy & Dial Master Takes / Independent / Sept 24, 2002
[In March of 1946, Parker composed and recorded “Yardbird Suite” for Dial with a septet that included: Charlie Parker on alto saxophone, Miles Davis on trumpet, tenor saxophonist Lucky Thompson, one of bebop’s greatest pianists, Dodo Marmarosa, Arvin Garrison on rhythm guitar, bassist Vic McMillan, and Roy Porter on drums. “Yardbird Suite” is a bebop standard. The title derives from Parker’s nickname “Bird”, respectively “Yardbird”. Far from being a suite, the song follows an AABA form. The “graceful, hip melody, became something of an anthem for beboppers.” There are only three known recordings of Parker himself playing the tune. The first two were recorded with a septet at Radio Recorders in Hollywood on March 28, 1946. The session was supervised & produced by Ross Russell for his Dial Records label. The last take of the tune of originally 4 became the master (takes 2 and 3 are lost), released as 78 shellac single.]

[Charles Parker, Jr. was born in Kansas City, Kansas, August 29, 1920, and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, the only child of Adelaide “Addie” (Bailey) and Charles Parker. He attended Lincoln High School in September 1934, but withdrew in December 1935, just before joining the local musicians’ union. Parker began playing the saxophone at age 11, and at age 14 he joined his school’s band using a rented school instrument. His father, Charles, was often absent but provided some musical influence; he was a pianist, dancer and singer on the T.O.B.A. circuit. He later became a Pullman waiter or chef on the railways. Parker’s mother Addie worked nights at the local Western Union office. Bands led by Count Basie and Bennie Moten certainly influenced Parker. He played with local bands in jazz clubs around Kansas City, Missouri, where he perfected his technique, with the assistance of Buster Smith, whose dynamic transitions to double and triple time influenced Parker’s developing style. In 1937, Parker played at a jam session at the Reno Club in Kansas City. His attempt to improvise failed when he lost the tune. This prompted Jo Jones, the drummer for Count Basie’s Orchestra, to contemptuously throw a cymbal at his feet as a signal to leave the stage. However, rather than discouraging Parker, the incident caused him to vow to practice harder, and turned out to be a seminal moment in the young musician’s career when he returned as a new man a year later. In 1938 Parker joined pianist Jay McShann’s territory band. The band toured nightclubs and other venues of the southwest, as well as Chicago and New York City. Parker made his professional recording debut with McShann’s band. As a teenager, Parker developed a morphine addiction while hospitalized after an automobile accident, and subsequently became addicted to heroin. He continued using heroin throughout his life, and it ultimately contributed to his death.Parker was a highly influential jazz soloist and a leading figure in the development of bebop, a form of jazz characterized by fast tempos, virtuosic technique and advanced harmonies. Parker was a blazingly fast virtuoso, and he introduced revolutionary harmonic ideas including rapid passing chords, new variants of altered chords, and chord substitutions. His tone ranged from clean and penetrating to sweet and somber. Parker acquired the nickname “Yardbird” early in his career. This, and the shortened form “Bird”, continued to be used for the rest of his life, inspiring the titles of a number of Parker compositions, such as “Yardbird Suite”, “Ornithology”, “Bird Gets the Worm”, and “Bird of Paradise”. Parker was an icon for the hipster subculture and later the Beat Generation, personifying the jazz musician as an uncompromising artist and intellectual rather than just an entertainer. Parker died on March 12, 1955. The official causes of death were lobar pneumonia and a bleeding ulcer, but Parker also had an advanced case of cirrhosis and had suffered a heart attack. The coroner who performed his autopsy mistakenly estimated Parker’s 34-year-old body to be between 50 and 60 years of age. Since 1950, Parker had been living with Chan Berg, the mother of his son Baird (who lived until 2014) and his daughter Pree (who died as an infant of cystic fibrosis). He considered Chan his wife although he never married her, nor did he divorce his previous wife, Doris, whom he had married in 1948. His marital status complicated the settling of Parker’s estate and would ultimately serve to frustrate his wish to be quietly interred in New York City. Parker wished never to return to Kansas City, even in death. He had told Chan that he wanted to be buried in New York, the city he considered his home. Dizzy Gillespie paid for the funeral arrangements and organized a lying-in-state, a Harlem procession officiated by Congressman and Reverend Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., as well as a memorial concert. Parker’s body was flown back to Missouri, in accordance with his mother’s wishes. Parker’s widow criticized the dead man’s family for giving him a Christian funeral even though they knew he was a confirmed atheist. Parker was buried at Lincoln Cemetery in Missouri, in a hamlet known as Blue Summit, located close to I-435 and East Truman Road. Parker’s estate is managed by CMG Worldwide.]

John Nobles and John Scott, Thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Parker was born in 1920 in Kansas City, Kan., and moved in 1927 to Kansas City, Mo.—where jazz was flourishing and the city was one of several ports instrumental in ushering in the musical improvisation style of Bebop, that is so identified with Parker.

Parker’s early music lessons occurred in the KC public schools. He began playing alto sax at age 13 and worked occasionally with semi-professional groups before leaving school at age 15 and becoming a full-time musician. For the next four years he would perform primarily in KC with a variety of local blues and jazz groups. His craft was developed mostly through practical experience and listening to older jazz performers. He began traveling to other cities in the late 1930s. He joined Jay McShann’s band, began touring, performed solo in many of McShann’s recordings and soon prominence followed.

from: Fear of Life / Run For Cover Records / August 5, 2016
[Creative Adult’s sophomore full-length Fear of Life finds the band peeling back some of their chaotic, fuzzed out psychdelia in favor of a newfound sense of melody. Taking cues from The Smiths and Oasis, jangly and melodic guitar lines weave their way through smoky, atmospheric west coast post punk. Recorded with Jack Shirley at his Atomic Garden studio, Fear of Life is Creative Adult at its best with just the right amount of polish to help guide through the hypnotic layers of sonic haze. Punk and alternative San Francisco based band formed in 2012, with Scott Phillips, RJ Phillips, Michael Bingham, James Rogers, Michael Fenton, and Anthony Anzaldo.]

from: Teens of Denial / Matador / May 20, 2016

Toledo chose the name “Car Seat Headrest” after recording the vocals of his first albums in the back seat of his car, for privacy. Car Seat Headrest released 12 albums on Bandcamp. Toledo’s production has gradually grown less lo-fi, but he still remains an effective example of the DIY ethic. Toledo saw a large influx of new fans with his 2011 release Twin Fantasy, which has become the most popular of his self-released albums. In September 2015, Car Seat Headrest announced on his Facebook page that he had signed an album deal with Matador Records. In October 2015, Car Seat Headrest released the compilation album, Teens of Style under the label. This was his first album that was not self-released via Bandcamp. Ruth Acuff on lead vocals, Mike Danger on guitar & vocals, Diggy Splash on drums, Josh Wrong on bass & vocals. Aarik Danielsen, of the Columbia Daily Tribune writes, “The members of The Royal Furs, who have been heard in other contexts, clearly are having a blast together. The band’s sound has a libertine glee to it that is true to the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll. What’s more, Acuff’s strong presence and the sheer musicality of her bandmates provides something fresh and energizing to find in each listen. This is woozy, rousing fun.”]

4. Wild Beasts – “Big Cat”

5. Tidy Hippy – “Death Accesssory”
from: Tidy Hippy EP / Independent / January 15, 2016
[Written, recorded, and produced by Hannah Copeland and Matthew Dunehoo. Tidy Hippy is a Kansas City based band formed by Hannah Copeland of KCUR 89.3 FM, and Matthew Dunehoo of Doris Henson, Baby Teardrops, and Loose Park. Hannah Copeland told Bryan Voell of the Johnson County Library, “Our songs usually start with a Matt playing a lick on his guitar at band practice. I will add a beat, and if the beat and melody feel right, we’ll keep jamming until we have made parts to a complete song. We usually add lyrics after we write our songs. My lyrics are mostly narrative, and Matt uses lots of wordplay with subtle themes. I wrote the lyrics to “Death Accessory,” an anthem calling lawmakers to allow Midwestern cities to make their own gun laws that fit the needs of their city, not their mostly rural state.. We sing together, separately, and in harmony.” Matthew Dunehoo added, in this same Johnson County Library website piece written by Btyan Voell, “Getting to practice in Hannah’s parents’ home has been an incredible luxury, especially after living in NYC and practicing in overpriced inhospitable 3’x3′ ovens. There’s always TP and her mom is an awesome cook. I always want to just crank tunes out willy-nilly without condemning them to death too soon. Hannah seems mostly on board.”]

[Tidy Hippy play The Bottleneck, TONIGHT, Wednesday, Aug 10, with Quiet Oaks, and Varma Cross]

8. Michaela Anne – “Won’t Go Down”
from: Bright Lights and the Fame / Kingswood Records / May 13, 2016
[Recorded at Farmland Studio in Nashville, the follow up to her 2014 album, Ease My Mind singer-songwriter Michaela Anne recently relocated from Brooklyn to Nashville, Bright Lights and the Fame was produced by Dan Knobler, a guitarist who’d often performed live with Michaela Anne. He had run the successful Mason Jar Music audio-video company in Brooklyn before opening his Gooseland Palace studio in Nashville, where the album was mixed. When it was time to start recording, Michaela Anne and her band mates worked together in one room, cutting basic tracks live at Farmland. Michaela Anne told writer Michael Hill,“I was in New York for ten years and I still feel like a New Yorker in many ways,” Michaela Anne admits, “but a lot of things about New York were stressful for me. A lot of my more introspective, self-reflecting songs probably dominated my records because that was what was dominating my mind. Moving to Nashville was kind of a dream experience, almost like I was experiencing my younger days. It’s such a vibrant, intimate and creative community. People actually want to get together and play music together every day and write songs. You go out and see the same friends you saw the night before. You start to get to know people. You go to a local bar and see the songwriters who wrote George Strait’s biggest hits or you run into Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. You can’t help but be inspired and changed.”]

CJ Wilson, Todd Rainey, and Steve Gardels joined us live on Wednesday MidDay Medley. (Cody Blanchard was unable to be with us.)

The Uncouth are a modern American Oi! band, Oi! is an often misunderstood genre but is a passionate, working class music inspired by bands like The Clash and Blitz. The music is part of the variety of Punk sounds and scenes.

In the press materials for Jonesy’s War, it is written that “The Uncouth don’t play into genre cliches” and “with ringing guitar solos and songs about real life, they are a far cry from the tired march-a-longs and tough guy fairytales” that has watered-down the scene.

The Uncouth have been a band since 2010, and are part of Kansas City’s multiple Punk rock scenes.

The Uncouth made these recordings w/ Joel Nanos at Element Recording during fall 2015.

The record was produced by Johnny Starke, who is also the owner of Teenage Heart Records and serves as the band’s manager, and is a lover of music and this genre of music.

Song by song Reviews by Jerry at Oi! Of America blog

“Madness On The Streets.”
– “rioting, chaos, and, well, madness occupying our streets with increasing frequency. Sonically, this song is a riot. Its full of machine gun drums, rocking rhythms, and sing-a-long choruses.

“Same Old Story.”
– “A song hitting kind of close to home. We all get older and at some point we find ourselves stuck in the rat race. After a while we all start to reminisce about days gone by. You may be stuck working your 5 day, 40 hour week, but your memories of the past won’t fade. They’re an oasis in the ominous desert of growing up.”

“Jonesy’s War,”
– “rounds out the first half of the record. A tune that tells the tale of a marine who is unable to forget his service and the war that he internalizes. For being a somewhat heavy song, it’s still rocking and packed with sing-a-long choruses. ”

“Got Me Wrong” and “Stand Up”
– “continue to showcase The Uncouth in all their street rock n roll glory.”

“Living Wage.”
– “thematically, something every working man or woman can fully understand. An ode to be being underpaid and the struggle that comes trying to make ends meet. Relatable in 2016 where the fashion of the day is to shit on the middle and working classes. How do you connect with an audience? Write heartfelt, genuine songs to which everyone can easily relate.”

The Uncouth’s first release was the 7″ single, “KC United”, part of the Too Much Rock Single Series.

Too Much Rock, a music blog site created by Sid Sowder in 1997, where he shares his photos & videos & comments of the live music shows he attends. Sid also posts podcasts! 4. PWR BTTM – “Projection”
from: Projection – Single / Father/Daughter Records / July 21, 2016
[PWR BTTM is an American queer punk duo composed of Liv Bruce and Ben Hopkins, who met in 2013, while they were both attending Bard College in New York. The band was originally a trio, which played many shows at Bard College. They spent several months working together and developing their skills as a pair before playing their first show or releasing their first demo, Cinderella Beauty Shop (2014). The duo’s name is an alternative to the term “power bottom”, which is described by Fusion writer John Walker in a September 2015 article as “a receptive partner who eschews submission to play a dominant role during sex”, meaning that while someone is “bottoming”, they maintain the dominant power in a sexual interaction. Bruce and Hopkins both felt the name suited the group as a label of empowerment. “Projection is a song about feeling unqualified to be the way you see yourself because of the way other people see you, and how other people’s perception of your identity can warp your sense of self. It’s about being exhausted with the pressure of fitting in and throwing a shiny, glorious middle finger to those who doubt you.” – Ben Hopkins, PWR BTTM.]

The term satyagraha was coined and developed by Mahatma Gandhi. He deployed satyagraha in the Indian independence movement.
