Lauren then formed her own band and released her debut EP “Do & Hope” in August 2014. Lauren Anderson is the 2015 Female Vocalist of the Year from Midwest Music Awards. Lauren Anderson released her critically acclaimed debut, full length album, Truly Me, on August 23, 2015.]

[Singer songwriters, Madisen Ward and Ruth Ward, both play guitar, and sing, harmonizing as son and mom. For most songs, Madisen sings lead and Mama Bear harmonizes, however for this Fleetwood Mac classic from Stevie Nicks, Ruth Ward sings lead with Madisen singing the high harmonies. Madisen Ward told Paste Magazine: “This is a timeless song that I feel can translate over multiple generations,” said Madisen. “Fleetwood Mac’s music definitely spoke to me at a very early age. It was an honor to cover a song by such an inspirational band.” “I love the song for it’s depth and emotion,” added Ruth Ward. In the past 3 years they have garnered national acclaimed after an appearance at the 2014 Americana Music Fest, they signed with Glassnote Records and recorded their debut full-length album in Nashville with acclaimed producer Jim Abbiss. They released their first single, “Silent Movies,” the same night they performed the song on The Late Show with David Letterman on CBS Television. They launched a big tour across the United States and traveled to Europe for multiple shows in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, and ten did it all again. They sang and played on the influential British television show, “Later With Jools Holland.” They were featured on CBS Sunday Morning, and the Today Show, and have visited many radio stations. [This 7″ was recorded December 2014 by Isaac Flynn at Element Studio in Lawrence Kansas. Both tracks were mixed and mastered by Jim Barnes. J. Evan Herd sings lead vocals and plays guitar on Stranger. He also sings backing vocals on Starve. Tanner Spreer plays guitar on both tracks and keys on Stranger. Sam Boatright sings lead vocals on Starve and plays bass and keys as well. Sam also plays guitar and sings backing vocals on Stranger. Rick Barkosky plays drums and percussion on both tracks. Taryn Blake Miller plays keys and sings backing vocals on “Starve.”]

13. (2.) Kristie Stremel – “Orlando (Keep Dancing)”

[2016 has been a difficult year. On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old security guard, killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in a hate crime inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Pulse was hosting Latin Night and most of the victims were Latino. About 320 people were inside the club, which was serving last call drinks at around 2:00 a.m. After arriving at the club by van, Omar Mateen approached the building on foot, armed with a SIG Sauer MCX semi-automatic rifle and a 9mm Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol and bypassed security and began shooting and taking hostages. After a three-hour standoff, he was shot and killed by Orlando Police Department officers. It was both the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter and the deadliest incident of violence against LGBT people in United States history. It was also the deadliest terrorist attack in the US since the 9 /11 attacks in 2001. This song was written by Kristie Stremel in response to this tragedy. This song was recorded and mixed by Paul Malinowski at Massive Sound. Mastered by John Hobson. Kristie Stremel on vocals & guitar, Anna Cook on cello & backround vocals, Ryan McCall on piano & background vocals. Described as “Joan Jett & Tom Petty’s love child,” and armed with her guitar, fueled by coffee, and over 75 published songs, singer, songwriter, producer, rock & roll mom. In October, 2013 Kristie and her partner, Lori Isabell, welcomed their adopted baby son, Charlie, into their family. In April 2014 Kristie released her 6th solo record, and the 9th full-length release of her musical career of over 20 years. Released on her own label, Stremeltone, it was Kristie’s first self-produced album. Stremeltone Records, was created in her home in Lawrence. The last track, “It’s Enough” was released early, as a video, featuring photos of couples in partnerships, relationships, marriages, unions, families. The video was Kristie’s response the the KS House of Representatives passing HD 2453 allowing business the right to refuse service to LGBT customers. In 2015 Kristie released, Wildflowers, her book of song and poems for children with accompanying CD recording with contributions from Victor & Penny, Kelley Hunt, Ron Megee, Kasey Rausch and more.]

Michelle Bacon works as a freelance writer and has written for The Kansas City Star, The Deli Magazine KC, and Folk Alliance International. Michelle also volunteers for Midwest Music Foundation. Michelle plays bass, in The Philistines, and she plays drums in Chris Meck and The Guilty Birds. Both of these bands have released critically acclaimed albums in 2016. Watch what you’re doing: We are all peripheral characters in the Novel of the Galaxy. Wherein Betse Ellis makes the Kansas and Mahavishnu Orchestra dreams of those who have such things come true. That’s the main melody there in the acoustic intro, reharmonized a fifth lower. We know you people love reharmonization. The melody at 1:54 originated as sort of a guitar placeholder, then took on a most macabre flavor when doubled by Betse. The song is in 7/8, but contains exactly one measure of 8/8. Can you spot it? Sondra Freeman is Director of Promotions and Artist Relations for Midwest Music Foundation, a nonprofit created to support music and musicians in Kansas City and the surrounding areas, founded in 2008 by a collective of musicians and music lovers. The Midwest Music Foundation (MMF) unites and empowers the greater Kansas City music community by providing programs and resources to area musicians through outreach, support, education, and health care opportunities. Sondra is instrumental in MMF’s annual events: Apocalypse Meow, MidCoast Takeover and the MidCoast Takeover fundraiser shows, as well as many other collaborative musical events and fundraisers.

We fell in love with Rachel Mallin‘s September 2014, solo EP release, The Persistence of Vision, that she recorded, mixed, and produced in the basement of her mom’s house in Gladstone, MO when she was 19. Rachel Mallin was sitting in a University of Missouri lecture hall scrambling to complete the last final exam of her sophomore year when she received a text in ALL CAPS from longtime friend and bassist Justin Walker, announcing that her song, “Razorback” was being broadcast on a radio station in her hometown, KC. Then her song “Something Wicked” was included in the compilation series How To Keep Dreaming Volume 1, from The Record Machine released in 2015. This summer, on July 30, Rachel’s 5 piece band, Rachel Mallin and The Wild Type released their debut EP, Degenerate Matters.

Standing at 6 foot 5 inches, Arsenia’s powerful vocals span a 3.5 octave range, while playing piano, bango, guitar and harp. Calvin teaches music to elementary students. 10. Maria The Mexican – “Carried Away”

[Second album from Kansas City based band formed by Maria Elena Cuevas, Tess Cuevas, Garrett Nordstrom. Influenced by traditional Mariachi music, Maria The Mexican is a hybrid of Mexican folklore and Rock. For ten years, Teresa and Maria Elena Cuevas performed with Mariachi Estrella founded by their grandmother Teresa Cuevas in 1970. As one of the first all female mariachi bands in the country, Maria Teresa Alonzo Cuevas is a pioneer in the Hispanic musical community. Her band flourished in the 80s but was struck by tragedy when four of the seven members were killed in the Hyatt Skywalk collapse in 1981. Once Teresa recovered she began teaching her grandchildren Mariachi music. In 2000, Teresa and Maria began exploring other genres of music while simultaneously co-directing Mariachi Estrella. Today the fusion of Maria The Mexican is mixed with a touch of blues, soul, funk, and rock n’ roll enhanced by the musical knowledge and sounds of Garrett Nordstrom. With Mattie Rhodes Jenny in instrumental in organizing the 18th Annual Dia De Los Muertos Exhibition & Festival that is currently at Mattie Rhodes through November 12. Jenny Mendez and Maria Vasquez Boyd have collaborated together on many projects though out the years, and together they have been involved in helping to build and create the Day of The Dead altar piece, for The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art.

[ Helen of Troy is the sixth studio album by Welsh musician John Cale, released in 1975 by record label Island, his last of three albums for the label. During the sessions Cale cut three other songs: the unreleased covers “Willow Weep for Me” and “God Only Knows”. Another unused track, “Mary Lou”, was released on the compilation album Guts. The album features a cover of “Pablo Picasso” by The Modern Lovers, a song which Cale had produced for the band’s debut album. Helen of Troy was released in November 1975 by Island. Even though the other Island albums were issued in the US (June 1, 1974, Fear, Slow Dazzle, Guts), Helen of Troy was not. It was commonly sold as a UK import all over the US. No singles were released from the album. This album came out without the consent of Cale, who considered that the tapes were not finished. Cale was touring when the album was released. For the spring 1975 tour of Slow Dazzle, he assembled guitarist Chris Spedding alongside Sandy Denny’s previous rhythm section of Pat Donaldson (bass) and Timi Donald (drums). Later that autumn, he toured again with this same line-up for twice as many dates. After shipping the first pressings Island Records replaced the track “Leaving It Up to You” with “Coral Moon”, because the former song mentioned Sharon Tate, wife of film director Roman Polanski, who was murdered in 1969 by the Charles Manson gang (Island never updated the cover or label). Things turned sour, and Cale and Island went their separate ways. The CD version contains both tracks. John Cale explained: “It could have been a great album. I came back from finishing Patti Smith’s Horses and had three days to finish Helen of Troy before I went on Italian tour. I was spending eighteen hours a day in the studio. When I got back, I found the record company had gone ahead and released what amounted to demo tapes. The trouble was that Island had their own ideas of what that album should sound like. They wanted to include songs I don’t particularly like, but it was also an impertinent assumption on my part that I was capable of managing myself. My determination to have Helen of Troy the way I did was not really fair to Island or my management, especially at a time when Island was losing its percentage of the market, which was making everybody very paranoid.”]

Chato Villalobos is a poet, and father, and 15 year veteran of the Kansas City Missouri Police Department. He has spent his last 9 years on the impact squad doing community policing at the Westside CAN Center. Chato was recently recognized with a proclamation from the mayor regarding the work he does with the Westside and immigrant community through community policing. His work has been featured in Al Jazeer America and the New York Times. Chato is a member of the Latino Writers Collective, the Union Cultura Mexicana, and just finished serving his 7th year on the board of directors of the Guadalupe Education Systems.

[Frank Skinner was a composer & arranger born in Meredosia, Illinois on Dec. 31, 1897. He died in Beverly Hills, California, Oct. 9, 1968. A graduate of the Chicago Musical College (now the Chicago Conservatory of Music), 16-year-old Frank found employment in vaudeville and began playing in local areas with his brother Carl on drums billed as the Skinner Brothers dance band. He began writing and arranging music for dance bands in New York, from 1925 to 1935, arranging 2000 popular songs for Robbins Publishing. After a short period at MGM, working on musical settings for The Great Ziegfeld (1936), Skinner was hired by Universal Studios. Over the course of his 30 years there, he composed music for more than 200 films earning five Academy Award nominations (1938–43). His distinctive approach to scoring horror films, such as Son of Frankenstein (1939) and The Wolf Man (1941), has been characterized as a ‘passion for chromatic lines … mirrored contours … [and] restrained, yet ominously mythical orchestrations’ (Marcello). He gained new recognition in the 1950s for his lush romantic scores, including those for such Douglas Sirk films as Magnificent Obsession (1954) and Written on the Wind (1956). Despite many changes in the film industry, his book Underscore (1950) has survived as an excellent introduction to film music composition. The Wolf Man is a 1941 American drama horror film written by Curt Siodmak and produced and directed by George Waggner. The film stars Lon Chaney, Jr. as a werewolf named “The Wolf Man” and features Claude Rains, Evelyn Ankers, Ralph Bellamy, Patric Knowles, Béla Lugosi, and Maria Ouspenskaya in supporting roles. The title character has had a great deal of influence on Hollywood’s depictions of the legend of the werewolf. The film is the second Universal Pictures werewolf film, preceded six years earlier by the less commercially successful Werewolf of London (1935). Lon Chaney, Jr. would reprise his classic role as “The Wolf Man” in four sequels, beginning with Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man in 1943.]

Son of Frankenstein the 1939, horror monster film, and is the 3d film in Universal Studios’ Frankenstein series and the last to feature Boris Karloff as the Monster as well as the first to feature Bela Lugosi as Ygor. The picture is a sequel to James Whale’s Bride of Frankenstein directed by Rowland V. Lee and starring Basil Rathbone, Boris Karloff and Béla Lugosi. The film was a reaction to the very popular re-releases of Dracula with Lugosi and Frankenstein with Karloff as a double-feature in 1938. Universal’s declining horror output was revitalized with the enormously successful Son of Frankenstein, in which the studio cast both Karloff and Lugosi.]

Michael is the star of the new Mile Deep Films short film, “Corvalo” directed by Anthony Ladesich, playing the Kansas International Film Festival, November 10, at The Glenwood Arts Theatre.

Produced by Clarke Wyatt and Betse Ellis. Recorded and mixed by Clarke Wyatt. Final mix assistance from Chad Meise at Massive Sound. “River Still Rise,” is a collection of originals and reworked traditional compositions that are presented “to be enjoyed as a musical adventure, much like the river exploration of the famous duo Lewis & Clark, an inspiration for the band’s name.” Betse Ellis writes in the extended liner notes: “The phrase River Still Rise appears in the journals of Meriwether Lewis, and to me, most notably when the Corps of Discovery readied their boats and supplies for the beginning of their river journey. Documenting all the details of the excursion included aspects of the weather, the general demeanor or specific behavior of the crew, and most certainly the level of the river. The river needed to be high enough to be navigable, and in that way, Clarke and I have been putting together our gear and supplies, building our boat, and watching the weather signs for about a year and a half at this point. We made this recording at home with the best gear we could acquire, and with Clarke’s long-built engineering and producing knowledge.”]

7. Iggy & The Stooges – “Gimme Danger”
from: Raw Power / Columbia / February 7, 1973
[3rd studio album from Ann Arbor, Michigan band, first active from 1967 to 1974, and later reformed in 2003. The Stooges were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. After their first two albums, The Stooges (1969) and Fun House (1970) were released to little commercial success, The Stooges were in disarray: they had officially broken up, bassist Dave Alexander was fighting alcoholism, and singer Iggy Pop’s heroin addiction was escalating prior to the intervention of David Bowie. Pop later recalled, “Very few people recognized the quality of the Stooges’ songwriting, it was really meticulous. And to his credit, the only person I’d ever known of in print to notice it, among my peers of professional musicians, was Bowie.” Pop relocated to London, having signed on as a solo artist to MainMan Management, who also handled Bowie. Pop said that Columbia executives insisted on two ballads “Gimme Danger” and “I Need Somebody”. The album was recorded in London’s CBS Studios, from Sept. 10 to Oct. 6, 1972. Pop produced and mixed the album by himself; unfortunately, his botched first attempt mixed most of the instruments into one stereo channel and the vocals into the other, with little regard for balance or tone quality. Tony DeFries, the head of MainMan, informed Pop that the album would be remixed by Bowie. Pop agreed to this, claiming that “the other choice was I wasn’t going to get my album out. I think DeFries told me that CBS refused to release it like that, I don’t know”, but insisted that his own mix for “Search and Destroy” be retained. Due to budgetary constraints, Bowie remixed 7 songs in one day in an inexpensive LA studio, Western Sound Recorders, in October 1972.]

The band recently reunited for new shows and a tour this year. Berwanger was also in the band, The Only Children, and released, 2004’s Change of Living & 2007’s Keeper of Youth. When Keeper of Touth ended Josh Berwanger took a break and became a high school basketball coach. In the 2012 Josh formed the Josh Berwanger band. Berwanger released their EP Demonios November 11, 2016.]

Beth Byrd is Artistic-Director of Byrd Productions Physical Theater, founded in 1995. With over 30 years of profession work as a mime, clown, physical theater artist, producer of physical theater and teacher, Beth has toured the country as a solo artist for schools and libraries. Beth has appeared in television and film and commercials, and has collaborated with Kansas City Renaissance Festival, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, City in Motion Dance Theatre, The Folly Theatre, the Reynolds Family Circus, Dance in The Park, KC Fringe Fest. Beth was an original board member of the Just Off Broadway Theatre. Beth studied at The Goldstone & Johnson School for Mime with Marcel Marceau and is a 2014 Charlotte Street Foundation Urban Culture Project Studio Resident.

Janet Henry has appeared professionally in the Kansas City premieres of the plays: “Cups” produced by Theatre League at The Unicorn Theatre, and “Arts or Crafts” produced by One Time Productions at the Bloch Artspace. Janet was recently an actor in the One Minute Play Festival at The Fishtank Theatre. She has collaborated with actor and designer Brad Shaw on several productions. Her collaborations with Beth Byrd Physical Theatre led to her recent studies in Barcelona, Spain. Janet Henry has worked in stage and film. She is a mom, a former track star, and recently adopted

9. Ed Wood – “Plan 9 From Outer Space (Trailer)”

[Plan 9 from Outer Space (originally titled Grave Robbers from Outer Space) is a 1959 American B & W science fiction horror film. The film was written, produced, directed and edited by Ed Wood, and stars Gregory Walcott, Mona McKinnon, Tor Johnson, Vampira and posthumously bills Bela Lugosi. Shortly after Lugosi’s death the story and screenplay for Grave Robbers from Outer Space were written and finalized, with Wood planning to use the unconnected, unrelated footage of Lugosi as a means of putting a credit for him on the picture. Wood used the Lugosi footage as a means of attracting actors to the picture, by saying to them that he was making “Bela Lugosi’s last movie.” Though Wood’s actions were driven in part by the desire to give his film a ‘star name’ and attract horror fans, the Lugosi cameo was also meant as a loving tribute and farewell to the actor, who had become fast friends with Wood in the last three years of Lugosi’s life. Wood hired his wife’s chiropractor, Tom Mason, as a stand-in for Lugosi, even though Mason was taller than Lugosi and bore no resemblance to him, making him one of the earliest “fake Shemps”. Narration from Criswell was also employed in an attempt to better link Lugosi’s footage with the rest of Plan 9. Every last scrap of material Wood had of Lugosi was utilized in the theatrical cut of the film, including what are minor sprocket discolorations, film trims that would in a normal film be discarded as unusable. Cuts of the film on VHS during the 80s and 90s, the vast majority unauthorized bootleg dupes, varied drastically not only in quality but also in the amount of Lugosi material retained.]

Before leaving NYC, Michael McQuary’s NYC apartment was filmed by CNN as a interesting real estate challenge. Michael’s long-time apartment was styled like a mysterious residence in a forbidden city, part living space, part movie set.

Michael McQuary moved to Kansas City three halloweens ago.

Michael is an artist, in make up, costume, stage settings, props for film and stage. Micheal is also a visual artist of personal portraits, “life captures”with china ink that are collected internationally. Michael designs for YourPowerSign.com where he creates personal art works of metal.

Michael has been embraced by the area film community, appearing in multiple short promotional pieces to the OM film festival.

Michael also stars of the new Mile Deep Films short film, “Corvalo” directed by Anthony Ladesich, playing the Kansas International Film Festival, November 10, at The Glenwood Arts Theatre.

11:00 – Guest Producer – Nico Gray & Haunted Tracks from The Limelight

Our friend, Nico Gray, joined us as “Guest Producer” for our second hour. Nico is a former theatre actor, performance artist, writer, and is currently a marketing and advertising consultant. Rooted in KC, Nico grew up with radio. Nico writes that, “Music has always served as the ‘passport’ through spiritual journeys that have transplanted him to the brownstones of Chicago, the rooftops of Paris, the sea-side of Marseille and the balconies of NYC. ”

Nico shared haunted tracks inspired by his move to Chicago, 30 years ago, when he worked at The Limelight. The Limelight opened July 31, 1985 and closed New Year’s Eve, December 31, 1988. Nico writes “Halloween was an everyday lifestyle that we lived and emulated at Limelight.” Nico will play representative songs of these moments and memories, and the holiday that perpetuated the Chicago 1980’s underground nightclub lifestyle.

The Limelight

The Former Chicago Historical Society Building is a historic landmark located at 632 N. Dearborn Street on the northwest corner of Dearborn and Ontario streets in downtown Chicago. Built in 1892, the granite-clad building is a prime example of Henry Ives Cobb’s Romanesque Revival architecture; the pair of large winged Gothic gargoyles at the entrance were a more recent addition. The building was the home of the Chicago Historical Society after its original headquarters burned down in the Great Chicago Fire, and prior to its relocation to Lincoln Park in 1931. Afterwards, the building housed a magazine publisher, the Works Progress Administration, the Loyal Order of Moose, the Chicago Institute of Design (1946–1956), and recording studios (1950s and 1960s). Since 1985 it has been the location of a series of nightclubs. From 1985 to 1989, nightclub entrepreneur Peter Gatien operated The Limelight nightclub in the building, one of his chain of nightclubs under that name; at some point he bought the building. In January 1989, Gatien sold the building to Fred Hoffman for $3.5 million. Peter Gatien was born August 8, 1952, and is a Canadian club owner and party promoter. He is best known as the former owner of several New York nightclubs, including The Limelight, Palladium, Club USA, and Tunnel. He was once dubbed as the “King of New York Clubs”, during his time in New York City.

[Australian musical project formed in 1981 in Melbourne by Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry. The band relocated to London, England, in May 1982. Australian music historian Ian McFarlane described Dead Can Dance’s style as “constructed soundscapes of mesmerising grandeur and solemn beauty; African polyrhythms, Gaelic folk, Gregorian chant, Middle Eastern mantras and art rock.” Having disbanded in 1998, they reunited briefly in 2005 for a world tour and reformed in 2011, releasing a new album (Anastasis) and embarking on several tours.]

[American electronic industrial rock band originally based in Chicago, Illinois and founded by Groovie Mann (born Frankie Nardiello) and Buzz McCoy (born Marston Daley). They became known in the 1980s as pioneers of the industrial music genre – although by the early 1990s they had changed to a more disco-oriented sound – and as a frequent target of censorship groups, including the PMRC, which objected to the band’s humorous and satirical references to Satan, Jesus and sex in their song lyrics and stage shows. During the early 1990s, Thrill Kill Kult had several hits on the U.S. dance club and alternative charts. They also contributed songs to several movie soundtracks and appeared in the 1994 film The Crow. The band has continued to record and tour with a rotating lineup in addition to core members Mann and McCoy. In 2012, the band celebrated its 25th anniversary.]

16. Jerry Goldsmith – “Ave Satani”
from: The Omen (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) / Tattoo Records / 1976
[Theme song to the film The Omen (1976) composed by Jerry Goldsmith. The Omen won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, with Ave Satani nominated for Best Original Song, one of the few foreign language (Latin) songs ever to be nominated. The Latin title of Ave Satani translates to “Hail Satan” in English. In an interview, Goldsmith says that his idea was to create a kind of Satanic version of a Gregorian chant and came up with ideas while talking with the London choir-master of the orchestra who was helping him. He decided to create something like a Black Mass, inverting Latin phrases from the Latin Mass. The choir-master, according to Goldsmith, was an expert in Latin and helped him come up with phrases; instead of saying “Hail Mary”, they decided on “Hail Satan”, and so on. The song contains various Latin phrases inverting Christ and the Mass, such as “Ave Versus Christi”, meaning “Hail Anti-Christ”, and “Corpus Satani”, an inversion of “Corpus Christi”, the body of Christ. The resulting lyrics are an inversion of the Roman Catholic rite of the consecration and elevation of the body and blood of Christ during the Mass (see Eucharist in the Catholic Church).]

17. Iggy Pop – “Fun Time”

[Debut solo album by American rock singer Iggy Pop. It was the first of two LPs released in 1977 which Pop wrote and recorded in collaboration with David Bowie. Although issued after Low, the opening installment of Bowie’s so-called “Berlin Trilogy”, the pair began writing and recording songs for The Idiot in mid-1976, before Bowie started work on his own album. As such, The Idiot has been claimed as heralding the unofficial beginning of Bowie’s “Berlin” period, and is a departure from the hard rock of Pop’s former band the Stooges, being compared particularly to Low and Heroes in its electronic effects, treated instrument sounds and introspective atmosphere. The album is regarded by critics as one of Pop’s best works, but is not generally considered representative of his output. Its title was inspired by Dostoyevsky’s novel The Idiot, three of the participants in the recording—Bowie, Pop and Tony Visconti—being familiar with the book. The album has been characterized as a major influence on subsequent post-punk, electronic, and industrial artists.]

[Vincent Pierre Claude Belorgey was born July 31, 1975, and is known as Kavinsky, is a French house artist whose production style is very reminiscent of the electro pop film soundtracks of the 1980s. Kavinsky claimed that his music is inspired by thousands of movies he watched as a young boy and that he has cherry-picked the best parts from them, consolidating them into one concept. Kavinsky has been compared to many similar French house artists including Daft Punk and Danger. He achieved greater mainstream recognition after his track “Nightcall” was featured in the 2011 film Drive.]

19. Michel Rubini & Denny Jaeger – “Sarah’s Panic”

[The Hunger is a 1983 British-American erotic horror film directed by Tony Scott, and starring Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie, and Susan Sarandon. It is the story of a love triangle between a doctor who specialises in sleep and aging research and a vampire couple. The film is a loose adaptation of the 1981 novel of the same name by Whitley Strieber, with a screenplay by Ivan Davis and Michael Thomas, and is Scott’s feature directorial debut.]

[Wings of Desire (German: Der Himmel über Berlin, “The Sky/Heaven Over Berlin”) is a 1987 Franco-German romantic fantasy film directed by Wim Wenders. The film is about invisible, immortal angels who populate Berlin and listen to the thoughts of the human inhabitants and comfort those who are in distress. Even though the city is densely populated, many of the people are isolated or estranged from their loved ones. One of the angels, played by Bruno Ganz, falls in love with a beautiful, lonely trapeze artist. The angel chooses to become human so that he can experience the human sensory pleasures, ranging from enjoying food to touching a loved one, and so that he can experience human love with the trapeze artist. The film is shot in both a rich, sepia-toned black-and-white and color, with the former being used to represent the world as experienced by the angels. Wim Wenders won best director award both at Cannes film festival and European film Awards for the film. The film was selected as the West German entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy award and BAFTA award, and was accepted as a nominee for the latter. The film has cult status and is included in Criterion Collection since 2009.]

21. The Cult – “Brother Wolf Sister Moon”

[British rock band formed in 1983. Before settling on their current moniker in January 1984, the band performed under the names Southern Death Cult and Death Cult. They gained a dedicated following in the UK in the mid-1980s as a post-punk/gothic rock band, with singles such as “She Sells Sanctuary”, before breaking mainstream in the United States in the late 1980s as a hard rock band with singles such as “Love Removal Machine” and “Fire Woman”. The band fuse a “heavy metal revivalist” sound with the “pseudo-mysticism … of the Doors [and] the guitar-orchestrations of Led Zeppelin … while adding touches of post-punk goth rock”. Since their initial form in Bradford during 1981, the band have had various line-ups; the longest-serving members are vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, the band’s two songwriters. After moving to London, the band released the album Love in 1985, which charted at No. 4 in the UK, and which included singles such as “She Sells Sanctuary” and “Rain”. In the late 1980s, the band supplemented their post-punk sound with hard rock in their third album, Electric; the polish on this new sound was facilitated by Rick Rubin, who produced the record. Their fourth album, Sonic Temple, proceeded in a similar vein, and these two albums enabled them to break into the North American market. By the early 1990s, the band were fraying behind the scenes, due to alcohol abuse and off-stage tensions, leading to a break-up in 1995.[1] The band reunited in 1999 and recorded the album Beyond Good and Evil, and they reissued all of their albums in Asia and Eastern Europe in 2003 and Japan in 2004. In 2006, the band reformed again to perform a series of worldwide tours. In October 2007, the band released the album Born into This, on the Roadrunner Records label. In July 2009, Astbury announced that the Cult would not record or produce any more studio albums, focusing on EPs and digital releases instead for new material, though he subsequently changed his mind and declared that there would be another album in the near future. The band have since released two more studio albums: Choice of Weapon (2012) and Hidden City (2016).]

Steve Tulipana studied video, fine arts & painting at UMKC, where he graduated in 1991. A constant collaborator, Steve is a founding member of influential KC bands: Season To Risk, Pornhuskers, Unknown Pleasures, Sie Lieben Maschinen, Roman Numerals, and Thee Water MoccaSins. With Shawn Sherrill, he is co-owner of recordBar and miniBar. After a series of sold out shows packed with loyal patrons who had found a home at this special neighborhood venue, recordBar closed Jan. 2, after 10 years at 1020 Westport Rd. recordBar began presenting pop-up shows at their new location, 1520 Grand, for Middle of The Map Fest, special shows this summer, Crossroads Music Fest, and the Outer Reaches Fest this weekend.

Brenton Cook had already produced 3 volumes of area band compilations for the Midwest Music Foundation called Midwestern Audio, before he formed the Kansas City independent music label, Haymaker Records in January 2014. Since then the label has released 9 full length albums, 2 EP releases, and one 7-inch single, all on vinyl. For the last 4 years, Haymaker Records has also been a co-sponsor & planner of the KC Psych Fest with Dedric Moore of, Monta At Odds and Mysterious Clouds. In this, the 5th year of the Fest, Dedric and Brenton have rebranded Psych Fest with it’s new name: Outer Reaches, with the idea of being more incorporating of music outside of the “psych” genre, that is still pushing the boundaries of music.

Outer Reaches, rebranded from KC Psych Fest this year, emphasizes musical acts experimenting and pushing boundaries within a variety of musical genres. The fest aims to showcase the ‘out there,’ left-of-center, under-the-radar musical acts.

Zachary Van Benthusen is a musician, actor, model, filmmaker, playwright, scene maker and producer. Fascinated by his dad’s Kiss records hanging on the walls when he was in 1st grade, he dressed up like Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley for halloween. In 2nd grade Zachary dropped out of school as part of an “unschooling” movement. He took guitar lessons with “Fast” Johnny Ricker, and at 9 he served as a guest DJ on 90.1 FM playing The Doors, and Pink Floyd. As a 12 year old he started working with Paul Mesner Puppets while also starting a photography business. When Zach was 16 he was modeling underwear for Late Night Theatre, and at 17 was writing plays with The Coterie Theatre’s Young Playwrights Roundtable. Zachary has worked in film & video. He has collaborated on music & videos for Ssion, with musician & director Cody Critcheloe. Zachary has been a collaborator with Whoop Dee Doo and has worked with the band Nature Boys. For five years Zachary played music with the band, Lazy and produced videos for the band.

Lazy has released music on multiple record labels, including Chicago’s Moniker Records, the same label that is currently releasing the music of the legendary band ONO.

ONO was formed January 5th, 1980. The band’s 36 year adventure in music have taken them from one of Chicago’s respected pioneers of punk & noise rock in the 1980s, to being recognized by a whole new generation of music lovers, and art students in the new millennium who are searching for original and authentic voices.

Robert Cole Manis founder of Moniker Records said, “ONO transcends the norm: a group who has undergone two periods of activity, first in the ’80’s, and now in the new millennium,” he says “Who does that and achieves notoriety the second time around? It is because ONO is unlike any other act that has graced the staged or hit the record button in the studio. Their mixture of gospel, noise, industrial, performance art, and beautiful madness has never been imitated or copied—they stand alone in a massive world of make-believe art.”

With encouragement from Moniker Records, in 2012 ONO released their first new album of music since 1986. “Albino” was release October 31, 2012, followed by “Diegesis” on March 11, 2014, and “Spooks” on October 30, 2015.

Since their 2007 resurgence, the band has gone on two cross-country tours, and are currently on tour with Buck Gooter, playing Kansas City tonight, before traveling to Texas.

ONO co-founder and composer P. Michael has assembled a beautiful band that conjure up their groves with rich bass lines, electric guitar textures, melodica feedback, and beautiful keyboard playing that would make John Cale proud. The band possesses steadfast and powerful percussion and drums, riffing and jamming, driving the beat, filling the room, giving sonic landscape to Travis and his testimonials in song and spectacle. Travis moves about the band, and into the audience, like an actor in a performance piece, in total control of each onstage costume change. He adorns this band with an elegant beauty, while staying true to punk and performance art pushing and questioning and hugging and flirting with his audience, turning the room into a dance floor-church service-classroom-fashion show. P. Micheal and the ONO band enjoy playing together, creating these amazing pieces that transition from song to song with samples and mixes, in a never ending delivery of sounds and rhythm.

In her profile on ONO for Fields Magazine, writer and photographer Sarah Jane Quillin, wrote about how ONO is fronted by queer Black Vietnam War veteran, punk poet and performance artist, Travis, who was originally from rural Mississippi. She writes: “His performance in ONO serves as catharsis, a way to process past trauma, both his own and that of American historical travesties like Tuskegee and Vietnam, gun violence in present-day Chicago, gender and sexuality issues. To Travis, making noise is as conceptual as it is aesthetic.” Travis told Sarah Jane Quillin, “Travis is not performing, I saw what Black bodies went through in Vietnam, and I live on the south side of Chicago and see what all the people live with there. To America, as a Black body, I am noise.”

[Since Calvin Arsenia came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, he has released his EP, Moments, in 2014, and his EP Prose in 2015, and his Folk Alliance exclusive EP Catastrophe in 2016. He has played all over town, including showcases at Folk Alliance International, Kansas City Fringe Fest, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, and collaborations with bands like My Brothers and Sisters. Kansas City based singer/songwriter, Crystal Clayton has been performing since she was 7 years old. She wrote her first song when she was 15. Versatile in multiple genres of music Crystal has performed in Musical Theatre for The New Theatre in Overland Park and for The Lyric Opera of Kansas City, as well as singing on tracks for hip hop artists Prozak and Ces Cru who are part of Tech N9ne’s label, Strange Music. Finding her own sound in an evergrowing pool of area singer songwriters, Crystal Clayton has just released her debut EP on June 3. She reports that has a new band that will make their live performance debut together at The Plaza Art Fair, INK Live! Stage, on Saturday, September 24, at 11:00 am.

Crystal originally recorded her songs using protools and then the songs were recorded and mastered at Chapman Recording Studios.

Legendary Kansas City Singer Songwriter – Howard Iceberg is one of the most prolific and poetic songwriters of the Kansas City music scene. He has written hundreds, possibly thousands of songs. Howard has done all of this while also leading a distinguished career as an immigration attorney, and he has donated much of his time and music to valuable projects that serve our community. Howard Iceberg began performing in coffeehouses in the late 1970s with fellow area independent songwriters Scott Hrabko and Iris DeMent. Over the past three to four decades he has released countless CDs, and recorded multiple collections of songs. In 2011, Howard Iceberg & The Titanics released a seven CD, box set, of 106 new songs, all instant classics. In 2014 he shared with us 13 songs in a collection called Spring 2014, and last year on his birthday May 9, 2015 he released, Smooth Sailing which included 13 new songs, captured on CD, from the many songs he has written and recorded in his ongoing recording project with musician and producer Pat Tomek.

Howard Iceberg joined us to talk about his new double album (2 CD Set) recording of 26 new tracks called, “Kansas City Songs.” Howard Iceberg will play a CD Release Show at The Brick, 1727 McGee, KCMO, on Monday, September 26, at 6:00 to 9:00, with the Rural Grit Happy Hour show. All proceeds from Howard’s release will benefit Rural Grit for upgrades to their equipment.

The 26 new songs written by Howard Iceberg. 17 of these songs were recorded by Phil Wade (of The Wilders) at his Alluvial Fan Studios, over a three day period, with a core group of musicians that included: Howard Iceberg, Betse Ellis, Clarke Wyatt, Chad Brothers, Brett Hodges, Chad Rex, and Phil Wade. The group ate together and spent 3 intense days recording these songs

Nine other songs were recorded by Pat Tomek at Largely Studios.

All songs were mixed by Pat Tomek at Largely Studios.

Pat Tomek, is a longtime member of The Titanics, drummer and member of legendary band The Rainmakers, and drummer in the band Deco Auto. Pat Tomek is also a recording engineer and producer who has worked with countless area bands and musicians and has been a primary partner and caretaker in the recording and production of Howard’s recording project of songs.

Howard Iceberg, has lived in The West Side neighborhood, and worked as an immigration attorney for 30+ years. We talked with Howard about the neighborhood’s history as a home for immigrant workers and their families, from Latino Americans, to the earlier years of Irish Americans. We talked with Howard about the current political presidential race and how some candidates are appealing to the absolute worst fears in voters.

We also talked with Howard about his 30+ year perspective on KC’s music scene and his observations of the changes in the scene. Howard said that he has observed the biggest changes starting 8 years ago, with a new energy in the music community. Howard said that if Kansas City was located in Brooklyn, everybody would know about these bands. We talked with Howard about the diversity in genre and styles that exist in Kansas City.
