With the Archive Series, Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) will be gathering otherwise unreleased home recordings, covers, and live sets from his entire career and releasing them on his own label, Black Cricket Recording Co. The songs on Volume No. 1 came to life at the same time as those selected for The Creek Drank the Cradle. The songs on Creek were only 11 of the many performed and recorded by Iron & Wine at home on a 4-track cassette. While some of this material has been widely bootlegged, it has never received a widespread or proper release until now.]

6. PUJOL – “Circles”
from: Kludge / Saddle Creek Records / May 20, 2014
[Daniel Pujol is based in Nashville, Tennessee. Originally from Tullahoma, Tennessee. A kludge is: “A clumsy or inelegant solution to a problem.” “An ill assorted collection of poorly matching parts, forming a distressing whole.” “A crock that works.”In February of 2013, Daniel Pujol set out to write and record the follow-up to his debut album, 2012’s UNITED STATES OF BEING. Pujol and producer Doni Shroader set up shop in Mt. Juliet, TN at The Place: a suicide-prevention center for teens located in a strip mall. They used largely borrowed and donated gear, recording every day from 5pm until 6am, all the while breaking down and setting up the temporary studio every day between office hours. Mixing took place during the building of Battletapes, a two car garage that was in the midst of being converted into an acoustically treated, professional grade tracking room; building permit, construction workers, and all. Following four months of vampiric living and working around conflicting schedules/eccentricities (the band, the engineers, the sun), Daniel, Doni, and Battletapes had finished the album they had been working towards. Recording and mixing happened in a “non-location” where things were being built or set up, in order to work on the album, working around the obstacles the location presented. 21. The Republic Tigers – “Made Concrete”
from: Keep Color / Chop Shop Records – Atlantic / February 19, 208
[Formed in Kansas City, Missouri by Kenn Jankowski A pastor’s son, who moved all over the US, and ended up in the Springfield, Missouri suburb of Republic. In 1999, he moved to KC where he began playing guitar in The People, a band that later changed their name to The Golden Republic. When the Golden Republic split in early 2006, Jankowski reached out to his friend Adam McGil and a new band was born. Jankowski explains on the Chopshop website that “‘The Republic Tiger’ was my high-school mascot,” “… I don’t like band names very much and I don’t like thinking about them either, so I just took something that I knew was timeless to me, and big enough that we could color it with our music and create its meaning with our songs.” guitarist/pianist Ryan Pinkston, bassist Marc Pepperman, and drummer Justin Tricomi all brought their multi-instrumentalist talents to the band who were the first act to sign with Chop Shop Records (an imprint of Atlantic Records). The song The Infidel was also featured on the Grey’s Anatomy Vol. 4 Soundtrack.]

11:17 – Interview with Steve Tulipana

Steve Tulipana has been a part of multiple influential Kansas City based bands: Season To Risk, Pornhuskers, Unknown Pleasures, Roman Numerals, and Thee Water MoccaSins. Steve is also the creator and co-owner of recordBar and miniBar. For Sie Lieben Maschinen, Steve has reunited with his Season To Risk band mate, Josh Newton to release an experimental recording project. Sie Lieben Maschinen will play Middle of The Map Fest, Saturday, April 25, at 7:45 at Ernie Biggs.

Sie Lieben Maschinen is an experimental record Steve recently completed with Josh Newton (Shiner, Season to Risk, Everytime I Die, Them Damned Things, With Knives etc. )

Sending tracks back and forth – Josh Newton on guitar, bass, synth; Chris Bolig on drums. Recorded & mixed by Scott Evans at Sharkbite Studios & Antisleep Audio, Oakland, CA.

Vocals for “The Man Laughs”, “Postcards” and “Public Image” recorded by John Bersuch at Innerhorse. All other vocals recorded by Duane Trower at Weights & Measures Sound Lab in Kansas City, MO.

“It is a project we’ve worked on for a over a year, sending tracks back and forth.” “It’s pretty heavy stuff. It is a pretty mental ride.” – Steve Tulipana

“Inspired by old Season to Risk journals, the film Holy Motors, German Expressionist films, Eno’s Oblique Strategies, the woman who took my virginity and chaos theory. Basically, a lot of hoo-ha!” – Steve Tulipana

From Middle of The Map.com: “Steve Tulipana and Josh Newton have been in many bands. Sometimes simultaneously. This is one of those times. Mining the well of their collective experience in bands such as Glazed Baby, Season to Risk, Shiner, Every Time I Die, Roman Numerals and more, this experimental recording project has finally become a full fledged live visceral noise making machine. You love machines, you know you do.”

Steve Tulipana Band History:

SEASON TO RISK (1989 – Present)
From band’s website http://www.robotswin.com: Kansas City Noise Rock. Shortly after getting together at school in 1989, they won a ‘Battle of the Bands’ which brought them into the studio for the first time. The only copy of the resulting demo tape that was actually mailed out ended up at Red Decibel records in Minneapolis, MN, who as luck would have it, were starting to work in conjunction with Colombia records. Before they knew what hit them, the band was signed to Columbia records, recording more demos at Sony Studios in NYC, and then living in Chicago, IL to record their self-titled first album at Soundworks Studio.

The band spent years constantly touring throughout North America; returning briefly to their hometown of Kansas City, MO for a few days or weeks, sometimes on the road 8 – 10 months out of the year. Odds are high when you spend most of your time driving that vehicles will break down day after day, wheels will fall off or blow-out, drivers will fall asleep, engines (and people) will crack or burst into flames. The van once flipped over on a frozen highway in Minnesota. The 22-foot RV rolled backwards with no brakes down a hill in Seattle. They broke down all over the country, including on the Golden Gate bridge, and left a trail of dead vehicles in their wake.

They lived at Bisi Studios, NYC for the Summer of 1994 recording their 2nd album, In a Perfect World. The music was a darker, more complex collection of songs, and the album was received with rave reviews from fans, and puzzled looks from the people at Colombia. There was no place on the radio for music like this yet, and exactly what category in the music store was this CD supposed to be displayed in? By chance, someone at Sony was looking for a band to play during a scene in the film ‘Strange Days’ and within days, the band was in Hollywood, playing the song ‘Undone’ over and over again… For the next year, the band was in a different city every night, which led to total exhaustion by the end of a summer 1995 arena tour w/ Corrosion of Conformity and Monster Magnet, resulting in the cancellation of their European tour w/ CIV for the Winter of 1996. The band was dropped from Columbia. And bass player Paul Malinowski quit to join the KC band Shiner.

The band quickly took on bass player Josh Newton and got busy writing music. Pooling resources, they spent the next 2 years building Trainwreck Sound Studios in KCMO. As floors, walls & ceilings were built, new Season To Risk songs were written, members worked with their other bands, and recording started at Trainwreck, with Casket Lottery, The Farewell Bend, Dirtnap, Iron Rite Mangle, Gunfighter and the Pornhuskers. They built their dream studio from the ground up: a 15 x 20 control room, equipped with a 1974 24-channel Auditronics console and a 2-inch tape machine, a 30 x 50 foot tracking room with antique oak floors, and a huge apartment/rehearsal studio upstairs on the 2nd floor. In Oct 1998, shortly after the studio officially opened to the public, a sudden flash flood of the Missouri river totalled everything in the neighborhood in 15 minutes, destroying the building, their tour RV in the parking lot, their bank account and almost everything else. They’re lucky no one was killed, except then Josh Newton was also lost to Shiner.

Fortunately, the third album was finished prior to the flood, and the band was able to wade through the five-foot deep, freezing, flood waters in total darkness out of the building to safety. Unfortunately, they discovered that the album Men Are Monkeys, Robots Win (Thick Records) was printed ‘out-of-phase’, making the songs sound hollowed-out. The label never re-released the printed CD, but the corrected mix is available on iTunes.

Legendary punk rock drummer/producer Bill Stevenson (Black Flag, Decendents) has always been a friend to Season To Risk, and has brought the band on tour with ALL several times. This led to the recording of the album, The Shattering, in 2000 with Jason Livermore and Bill Stevenson at the Blasting Room in Ft. Collins, CO, and its release on Owned & Operated records in 2001. The addition of the third and final bass player of S2R, Billy Smith of the band Dirtnap, brought the band full circle. The Shattering album is more diverse than ever, fusing elements from all of the band’s previous work and some new experimentation into twelve heavy, melodic songs.

Several tours followed after The Shattering CD release, and the band spent a few years resting, recouping, and regrouping – working on many other projects, musical and otherwise. 1989 – 2009, 20-Year Anniversary.

THEE WATER MOCCASINS (2011 – Present)
Started as a lark – a challenge to create a completely new band in 4 days and perform live on the 5th. Originally conceived as a semi-improvised free-for-all over backing electro tracks, built and performed on iPhone apps and old 505′s, Thee Water MoccaSins honed their improvisations into concrete and dynamic electro-psych songs that the band refers to as fractal-pop.

DROP A GRAND (2012 – Present)
One of the best surprises of Middle Of The Map Fest occurred when I wandered into the Riot Room midway through Canadian Agit-punk group Drop A Grand’s set. Their live show is energetic and playful, capped off by several eccentric outfits, a couple luchador-style masks and plenty of odd stage banter. – Mills Record Company

SIE LIBEN MASCHINEN (2014-Present)
One of the inspirations was: Holy Motors, a 2012 Franco-German fantasy drama film written and directed by Leos Carax, starring Denis Lavant and Édith Scob. Lavant plays Mr. Oscar, a man not unlike an actor who inhabits several roles, but there are no apparent cameras filming the man’s performances. It is Carax’s first feature film since 1999. The film competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

We talked with Steve about RecordBar, 1020 Westport Road, that opened nearly 10 years ago, and the restaurant’s new sibling: miniBar.

In the fall of 2012, RecordBar owners Steve Tulipana and Shawn Sherrill bought the space occupied by the Gusto lounge at 38th Street and Broadway, renovated the place, and turned it into a club with a retro/travel theme.

Originally the club had no live music, but eventually began featuring KC’s best DJs and more LIVE shows.

We recently featured Steven Tulipana’s voice on recordings for Johnny Hamil’s GaV7d project.

Sie Lieben Maschinen new release June Gloom ends with a perfect cover of Public Image Limited song “Public Image” from PiL’s debut record.

Sie Lieben Maschinen will play Middle of The Map Fest, Saturday, April 25, at 7:45 at Ernie Biggs.

17. Fleetwood Mac – “Over My Head (Single Version)”
from: The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac (Remastered) / Reprise / May 31, 2013
[Written by group keyboardist/vocalist Christine McVie. In September 1975, “Over My Head” was released as the lead single from the LP album entitled Fleetwood Mac. It was the band’s first song ever to achieve ‘hit’ status in the United States by appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart (#20 in early 1976). Its success helped the group’s eponymous 1975 album to sell 8 million copies. The 45 RPM single version of the song—released for radio airplay—was a remixed, edited version that differed noticeably from the version on the Fleetwood Mac album. Fleetwood Mac is a British-American rock band formed in July 1967, in London. The band have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. In 1998, selected members of Fleetwood Mac were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The two most successful periods for the band were during the late 1960s British blues boom, when they were led by guitarist Peter Green and achieved a UK number one with “Albatross”; and from 1975 to 1987, as a more pop-oriented act, featuring Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Fleetwood Mac’s second album after the incorporation of Buckingham and Nicks, 1977’s Rumours, produced four U.S. Top 10 singles (including Nicks’ song “Dreams”), and remained at No.1 on the American albums chart for 31 weeks, as well as reaching the top spot in various countries around the world. To date the album has sold over 45 million copies worldwide, making it the sixth-highest-selling album of all time. Due to numerous lineup changes, the only original member present in the band is drummer Mick Fleetwood. Although band founder Green named the group by combining the surnames of two of his former bandmates (Fleetwood and McVie) from John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, bassist John McVie played neither on their first single nor at their first concerts, as he initially decided to stay with Mayall. Keyboardist Christine McVie, who joined the band in 1970 while married to John McVie, has appeared on every album except the debut album, either as a member or as a session musician. She left the band in 1998 but returned in 2014. McVie is currently on a world wide tour with Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood.]

Gamelan Genta Kasturi, premiered a large scale collaborative work in 2011 featuring his Patrick Alonzo Conway’s original composition Angels & Demons at Play through Urban Culture Project and ArtSounds. Shortly thereafter, Gamelan Genta Kasturi was awarded Studio Space through the Charlotte Street/Urban Culture Project Studio Residency Program.

A gamelan is a traditional musical ensemble from Indonesia, typically from the islands of Java and Bali, featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, kendang (drums) & gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed & plucked strings. Vocalists may also be included. For most Indonesians, gamelan music is an integral part of Indonesian culture.

10:15 – Interview with Walter Coppage and Nedra Dixon

IMG_7304_2

Spinning Tree Theatre is presenting the Kansas City premiere of “Black Pearl Sings,” on stage through March 22, at Just Off Broadway Theatre, 3051 Penn Valley Drive, KCMO. Written by Frank Higgins, directed by Walter Coppage, this acclaimed play features Nedra Dixon as Pearl, an African-American woman with a powerful voice in a Texas prison, and Vanessa Severo as Susannah, an ambitious song collector for the Library of Congress. More info at: http://www.spinningtreetheatre.com

Walter Coppage has appeared with The Steppenwolf Theatre Company, The Studio Theatre in Washington, DC, The Kansas City Repertory Theatre, The St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre, The Coterie, KC Actors Theatre and The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, and has played principal roles in feature films and television. He is a founding member of KC Actors Theatre, an Advisory Board member for The KC FilmFest and KC Jubilee and is The Unicorn Theatre’s Actor Ambassador for the National New Play Network. You may recognize his voice from his broadcasting and voice over work.

Nedra Dixon is a professional actress, and singer who has performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and Madison Square Garden, on Broadway, Off Broadway, national tours, regional theaters, and in Kansas City at The Unicorn, The Coterie, American Heartland Theatre, and many others. She is a featured vocalist on 12th Street Jump, the locally-produced jazz radio show that is broadcast on 110 NPR stations nationwide, and is a proud member of the Kansas City vocal jazz trio, Book of Gaia, with Angela Hagenbach and Pamela Baskin-Watson.

“Black Pearl Sings” has been produced all over, Washington DC, Portland, San Jose, Chicago, bit this is the Kansas City premiere of a play written by Kansas City based playwright Frank Higgins, perhaps Kansas City’s most famous playwright, this seems like perfect choice for Spinning Tree Theatre, one of KC newest Equity Theatres.

Walter Coppage talked about how he learned about this play and how it became the show where he made his directorial debut.

Nedra Dixon plays Alberta “Pearl” Johnson, described in one review as, “doing hard time in a Texas prison after visiting Lorena Bobbitt–style vengeance on a man with the devil in his hands.”

This is not a musical, by definition, however there are a lot of songs in this show, making it a play with music.

“Playwright Frank Higgins was inspired by the real-life relationship between legendary singer/guitarist Huddie William Ledbetter, Lead Belly) and Harvard folk musicologist John Lomax, who helped petition for Ledbetter’s release from prison, and later became his manager. Lomax figured, rightly, that African Americans in prison were more likely to be unaffected by popular music of the time, thus retaining early musical influences.”

Vanessa Severo plays Susannah, a song collector for the Library of Congress. “People with good voices tend to know a lot of songs,” Susannah observes, hoping Pearl will offer up an unknown song to help further her academic career. Pearl makes the decision to share her songs and voice when Susannah offers to help search for Pearl’s 22-year-old daughter, who is missing from her Houston neighborhood.

So much about this play depends on the two actress, who alone bring this play and these characters to life each night on stage.

Spinning Tree Theatre presents the KC premiere of “Black Pearl Sings,” on stage through March 22, at Just Off Broadway Theatre, 3051 Penn Valley Drive, KCMO. Written by Frank Higgins, directed by Walter Coppage, this acclaimed play features Nedra Dixon as Pearl, and Vanessa Severo as Susannah. More info at: http://www.spinningtreetheatre.com

from: Honeysuckle / Independent / July 26, 2014
[Bio from www:nicholasstjames.com: Nicholas St. James is a folk troubadour who is more a throwback to Vaudeville than the Dust Bowl; a master of both acoustic and electric performance. The dedication and ferociousness with which he performs is worth the price of admission alone, but then there are the songs… His songs tell tales of deceased mothers, down-on-their-luck working men, drunks and encounters with strangers. Nicholas’ sound is one-part gypsy and one-part blues while honoring and expanding on the genre Americana. …and he helped me push my stalled Toyota Land Cruiser out of the middle of Main Street and into a parking lot nearby.]
