Wednesday MidDay Medley is taking to the stage for a LIVE SHOW on Tuesday, July 10 at the recordBar, 1020 Westport Road, when we present “A Story in A Song” LIVE at the recordBar. 7 Kansas City Writers including Lisa Cordes, David Wayne Reed, Meghan Whelan, Sarah Beth Mundy, tell a story about a song that changed their life in some way, then we’ll hear the song performed LIVE on stage by members of the Dead Voices band, Tiny Horse and Betse Ellis of the Wilders. 7 stories, 7 songs. After A Story in A Song at 10:00 we present a Post Story Dance Party with: Molly Picture Club, The B’Dinas, and Red Kate. 10 bucks at the door gets you into both shows. A Benefit for 90.1 FM KKFI.

This 6-piece Lawrence based band includes: Austen Malone, Noah Compo, Wayne Zimmerman, Josh Landau, Brook Partain, and Danny Bowersox. The band was formed in 2010 in Lawrence? “Mother Mountain” is the band’s self-released 5-song [EP] and was part of our 111 Best Recordings of 2011, The EP received critical acclaim.

Fullbloods is a rock and roll band pulling inspiration from all corners and time periods of the genre. The band consists of four trained audio engineers who pay respect to conventional rock and roll and aren’t afraid to beg borrow or steal, consulting a smattering of western and surf music along the way.

EVERYDAY/EVERYNIGHT8:00 – 8:30

Everyday/Everynight introduced themselves in the fall of 2009 with a lush, introspective debut record, Moon Phases, and have since continued to turn out mentally and emotionally stimulating indie rock. As the name implies, Everyday/Everynight explore a cycle of human existence; moments of wonder balanced by fits of chaos… From glowing anthems to raging art-punk the sound is nothing short of striking.

COWBOY INDIAN BEAR – 8:45 – 9:15

Members CJ Calhoun, Beau Bruns and Marty Hillard have opened for Peter Bjorn and John, The Appleseed Cast, Murder by Death, and The Republic Tigers. After signing to Kansas City label The Record Machine in early 2010, the band released their full-length debut album “Each Other All The Time.”

THE EMPTY SPACES – 9:30 – 10:00

Formed from a studio band that recorded Mat Shoare’s solo album by the same name The Empty Spaces have been interpreting Shoare’s song writing since early 2010. Eventually the three piece began to collaborate more with song arrangements and stylistic choices yielding a kind of “retro-punk rock” that is fronted with an energetic, yelping vocal style.

SOFT REEDS – 10:15 – 11:00

Soft Reeds is the brainchild of Ben Grimes (formerly of Astralwerks’ The Golden Republic), a Chicago native whose roots grip firmly in the ’77 Berlin sounds of Brian Eno, David Bowie and Iggy Pop, while embracing the richness of American indie rock. Originally started in 2007 as Grimes’ post-TGR solo project, Soft Reeds became a full band in 2009, and released the critically acclaimed ‘Soft Reeds are Bastards’ in 2010.

All tracks produced by Manuel who also records solo under the name Chad Valley. Part of Oxford’s Blessing Force collective, Jonquil, alongside Pet Moon, Trophy Wife, Fixers, Rhosyn, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Chad Valley, represent the musically creative output of today’s Oxford.]

4. Sam Billen – “Heartbeat of the City”
from: Tokyo Sessions / The Record Machine / 2009
[From Lawrence, Kansas, In 2009, Sam Billen released Headphones & Cellphones with The Record Machine. It was his first his first solo record in 5 years since leaving Northern Records who also released his decade-long band, The Billions, who disbanded in 2008. After the break up of the Billions, Sam took some time to focus on making his own music and starting a family. Sam works full time at the University of Kansas, and rstarted a new business, BillenSounds, LLC.]

6. Mission of Burma – “Academy Fight Song”
from: Signals, Calls and Marches / Matador / (August 1981) Remastered by by Matador in 2008
[American post-punk band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1979. The band was formed by Roger Miller (guitar), Clint Conley (bass), Peter Prescott (drums) and Martin Swope (tape manipulator/sound engineer). Miller, Conley and Prescott share singing and songwriting duties. In early years the band’s recordings were all released on the small Boston-based record label Ace of Hearts. Despite initial success, Mission of Burma disbanded in 1983 due to Miller’s development of tinnitus caused by the volume of the band’s live performances. The band released only one album in its original lineup, Vs.. Mission of Burma reformed in 2002, with Bob Weston replacing Swope, and has since recorded three more albums, ONoffON, The Obliterati, and The Sound The Speed The Light.]

Chris Haghirian is a 12 year veteran of The KC Star and helped launch INK in 2008. For the past 3 years Chris has heroically served a one of the primary organizers of MidCoast Takeover SXSW, recognized nationally by USA Today. For the past two years Chris has helped organize and cultivate The Middle of The Map Festival. Chris is also a regular contributor to The Mailbox, a weekly radio podcast produced & hosted by Michael Byars, available at midwestmusicfound.org.

Nathan Ruesch is co-founder and manager of The Record Machine, an Independent KC based record label, founded in 2003, Nathan Ruesch also djays at The Union, on a semi regular basis with Dan Eaton, who is one of the 30 plus artists & bands in The Record Machine family. With Chris, Nathan is the co-mastermind, of The Middle of The Map Festival.

BOB BERKEBILE is a founding principal of BNIM and has contributed over four decades to the architectural profession. Bob and his firm are setting new standards for regenerative design & resource efficiency at the building & community scales. Thru their involvement, energy, materials & human resources efficiency strategies are being implemented on a broad range of projects across the country.

PORTER ARNEILL, KC Municipal Art Commission. Porter Arneill holds a Master’s degree in fine art from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. He has served as the Director of Education and Adjunct Curator at Laumeier Sculpture Park and Museum and as the Director of Public Art and Education for the Regional Arts Commission, both in St. Louis. He has been the Director/Public Art Administrator for the Kansas City, Missouri Municipal Art Commission since 2002.

PETER WITTE, Dean of the Conservatory of Music and Dance and Professor of Conducting at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (appointed in August, 2008.) During this time, the Conservatory has partnered w/ the Kansas City Symphony, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Friends of Chamber Music, the KC Ballet, the Greater KC Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Council, the Crossroads Arts District, the Arts Council of Kansas City, and the American Jazz Museum. Mr. Witte serves on the Mayor’s Task Force for the Arts in Kansas City.

JULIÁN ZUGAZAGOITIA, Director of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and took his post September 1, 2010. Since arriving at the Museum, he has shown a high interest in reaching out to the community and in making the Nelson-Atkins more open and accessible to all visitors. Born in Mexico and educated at the Sorbonne Paris IV in France, Zugazagoitia speaks six languages and has worked at institutions in the Americas and Europe. Before moving to Kansas City.

KC based musician John Velghe has just returned from the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas, where his band The Prodigal Sons, were featured in Alejandro Escovedo’s annual SXSW Party, held at The Continental Club, on Sunday Night, March 19, and where John performed on the same stage as Lenny Kaye of The Patti Smith Band, Garland Jeffreys, Tommy Stinson of The Replacements, and Peter Buck and Mike Mills of R.E.M. For over 20 years now John Velghe has been creating music and touring in bands including: The Daybirds, Saint Jude, famous fm, and Mendoza Lie. As a composer John Velghe has scored feature-length documentaries and short films. In 2010 John released his first solo EP and last week his new, full length album, “Don’t Let Me Stay,” was released on vinyl from Lakeshore Records. John Velghe & The Prodigal Sons will be concert this Saturday, March 24, at the recordBar, 1020 Westport Rd, in a special recording release show that will include an 11-piece ensemble, including string players and a horn section.

[Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Ric Ocasek, lead singer and bassist Benjamin Orr, guitarist Elliot Easton, keyboardist Greg Hawkes and drummer David Robinson formed The Cars in Boston, Mass, and were signed to Elektra Records in 1977. The Cars were at the forefront in merging 1970s guitar-oriented rock with the new synth-oriented pop. The band broke up in 1988. Bassist Benjamin Orr died in 2000 from pancreatic cancer. The surviving original members reunited in 2010 to record a new album, titled Move Like This, which was released May 10, 2011, and toured to support the album. Sonic Spectrum presents a tribute to The Cars featuring members of Minden, White Girl, Be/Non, Deco Auto, Lazy, The Sexy Accident and more. March 25 at 7:00 PM at the recordBar. Gregory Russell Clark

I met Greg Clark though my friend April Fletcher. Greg & April were young students together at UMKC, just starting out in the world. Gregory Russell Clark had went to Bishop Hogan High School and eventually graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the UMKC Conservatory of Music in 1991.

Greg worked professionally in NYC as a singer, arranger, producer, coach, and contractor. His vocals can be heard on the NBC Television show “Smash” where he worked with composer Marc Shaiman. Greg sang with so many of the most successful artists in the business, including: The Roots, Queen Latifah, Dolly Parton, the list goes on forever. Greg sang all over the world, in venues including Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Carnegie Hall. Greg’s voice can be heard in numerous television on a radio commercials, singing back up for superstar vocalists and producers in the studio, and touring with many many artists and bands. Oleta Adams gave Greg his first big break in the music business.

Greg’s voice was rich with a beautiful range. He could sing as deep as Barry White and seamlessly climb to his beautiful falsetto.

In the early hours of Tuesday, March 20, Gregory Russell Clark, passed away, in his NYC apartment, leaving friends & musical comrades in shock. We just cannot believe he is gone.

Greg’s voice was so very big, and so was his heart, and his soul, and his loyalty to friends, and his sense of justice, and his unforgettable laugh. I once asked Greg to be a part of a performance art piece I performed in the early 1990’s, about North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms. Greg played the part of Mr. Rogers, and even though he was a little nervous, he played the part with honesty, and with his beautiful heart and voice shining through.

Steffani Bennett, gave me permission to play a song that Greg recorded as a demo. The song is called “This Love Won’t Wait.”

Gregory Russell Clark was a man who followed his dreams and lived them, we’ll miss his voice & heart, Gregory Russell Clark, we love you.

“The Midcoast Takeover Benefit shows are created to raise funds specifically for the expense of two full days (and night) of the showcase in Austin, Texas, at The SXSW Music Festival. Renting a venue in a prime area is expensive. Unlike a lot of other showcases, the Kansas City organizers invest in top notch production for sound and lights, which are transported to Austin and back home. In addition, there are advertising costs, website design and maintenance, printing costs for posters and handbills. The showcase in Austin is free to the public, so organisers raise all the funds in advance. Everyone involved works to ensure that our Kansas City bands have the best production and best support that organisers can manage.”

MidCoast Takeover was born from The Midwest Music Foundation a not-for-profit organization that has the amazing mission of supporting and helping to create a safety net for our amazing, hard working, local musical artists. Ross Brown grew up in West rural Olathe. His band Fullbloods will be in concert this Sat, Feb 18, at 10:00 PM at The Brick, 1727 MCGEE, w/ Richard the Lionhearted from Columbia and Millions of Boys from Omaha, w/ an acoustic set by Jerad Tomasino.

Jerad Tomasino moved around a lot growing up but spent some of his high school years living in Omaha. Jerad has released solo recordings and his also a member of the critically acclaimed band, Everyday/Everynight. Jerad and Ross join us today to talk about Golden Sound Records, their involvement in the Midcoast Takeover 2012, The Middle of The Map Festival and the Kansas City Music Scene.

Ross grew up in west rural Olathe.

Jerad came from a Military family, and moved around alot, but claims Omaha as a hometown.

Ross Brown started playing trumpet in junior high school band and continued through high school playing euphonium, guitar and bass in jazz band, and singing in choir. Music classes were all he took from “public school” during high school. He started writing music when he picked up guitar around 12 years old. He picked up bass and drums shortly afterwards to accompany myself on recordings. Singing wasn’t really his thing until after high school.

Jerad told us that he was one of those kids who always sang along to the radio in the car. He picked up the guitar around 7 years old. He took up acting for most of his childhood, but spent countless hours with his ears full of radio and his eyes glued to MTV. He was addicted to studying pop music. Singing was his primary form of music making until Christmas of 2000 when he got his first electric guitar. He wrote his first riff/song, “Stuff” when he was 11 and played around until he moved to Omaha. At 13 he performed his first original song, “Chocolate Warfare”, at a local talent show and got hooked. He ditched acting and set his sights on music.

Ross Brown went to DeSoto high school for a year and home-schooled the rest. After that he took a two-year audio engineering course at BRC Audio Productions, where he met Jerad and everyone in his band Fullbloods.

Jerad Tomasino went to Bellevue West, in Bellevue, Nebraska for 2 years, then he attended Lee’s Summit West for 2 years. After high school Jerad started attending classes at BRC Audio Productions where he double majored in Music Ed. and Music Therapy at The Conservatory. He had a mental breakdown, changed majors and started EverydayEverynight. Jerad will graduate from the University of Missouri at Kansas City this year majoring in Music Composition with a minor in Entrepreneurship.

Jerad met Ross at BRC, and connected with Mat Shoare and Evan Ashby while in choir at The Conservatory at UMKC. Mat Shoare is also a founding member of Everyday/Everynight and a founding partner in Golden Sound Records.

Why start a record label?

Ross Brown told us about how he and Jerad and Mat, wanted a platform for their own music and an organized body to support and encourage others to continue making music. Golden Sound Records keeps them involved in, and accountable to their craft.

Jerad told us about how music is always about more than yourself. Even the music that we personally create (as a necessity) must bounce off of other people to truly resonate. So, for Jerad, the idea of a label is an extension of his artistic output; fostering ideas and projects into realization. It makes him a stronger musician and more fulfilled person to touch and be touched by the records and artists he works with. On a logistical front, this label centralizes their efforts, and gives context to the art that is deemed as cool and lets Golden Sound Records present it in a specific way.

Coleen Shaw-Voeks is originally from Colorado and has been working in record stores for over 15 years. She was formerly the owner of Need More Discs with her husband, musician Erik Voeks. Need More Discs operated for 6 years in Shawnee, Kansas before closing in August of 2009. Coleen is currently the manager at Vinyl Renaissance on West 39th Street in Kansas City. Bess Wallerstein comes to us from the Kauffman Center for The Performing Arts. Bess has worked in the KC Theatre as an artist, administrator, producer & teacher. She has worked for The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival and for Theatre League. In 2005, she founded One Time Productions with KC visual artist, Johnny Naugahyde. In 2008, she directed True West by Sam Shepard in an airstream trailer outside in a backyard in Brookside. In 2009 she directed the KC Premiere of Arts or Crafts, at the Bloch Art Center, in collaboration with The Kansas City Art Institute. She is the founder of CounterClockwise Comedy, an experimental comedy group which performs comedy shows and live comedy movie roasts at Screenland Theatre. Last winter Bess also was a performer in “A White Nose Christmas” a show she created with David Wayne Reed and Heidi Van for The Fishtank Performance Space. The trio will be creating a new show this fall called: “Baby Bump.”

Philip ‘blue owl’ Hooser is an actor, playwright, director, and dramaturgical speaker, a published poet, columnist, and sometimes theatrical reviewer. He recently directed “Jet Propulsion” on the Unicorn Theatre’s Jerome Stage, for the KC Fringe Festival. Philip’s writing was included in the “America Now & Here” Exhibit at the Leedy Art Space. Philip’s plays include: Loving Lucy, Coyote Mischief Tales, and Dottie: A Story of Dorothy Parker. He has appeared onstage in over 100 shows working at the Coterie Theatre, Late Night Theatre, Gorilla Theatre, Mystery Train Theatre, Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre, The Unicorn Theatre and The Fishtank where he recently performed as an actor in the new plays: “Discernment” and “Prop 8 On Trial.” He has worked as a Teaching Artist for Coterie Theatre, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. Philip is a regular speaker for the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival and a regular host of the Mid America Freedom Band Concerts. And he has been an integral voice performer on WMM’s special presentations of: “The He Touched Me Gospel Hour.” Philip ‘blue owl’ Hooser is also creator and curator of “Eat Their Words,” a series that is presented regularly at The Fishtank Performance Space and Prospero’s Books. On Friday, October 22, Eat Their Words returns to The Fishtank for another show.

Bill Sundahl is the founder of Spice of Life Productions which has presented multiple vaudvillian-variety performances billed as “The Donkey Show.” He is also the founder of The Crossroads Music Festival that celebrates and gives venue to the many incredible Kansas City, Lawrence and area bands. Bill Sundahl a musician and singer and songwriter who was part of the Pitch Music Award winning band It’s Over that ended in 2009. His new band The Columns have become part of the local music scene with many local performances and the release of their 2010 EP “The Columns.” The Columns are currently working on a new full-length release and will be in concert, as a three piece, on Friday, October 21 at The Record bar at 7:00 PM.

The movement known as “Occupy Wall Street” has spread far beyond its starting point in lower Manhattan and now has offshoots in 25 cities nationwide, from D.C. to Alabama to Portland, to Topeka. Demonstrators are protesting everything from corporate greed to joblessness to economic inequality. Occupy KC has set up a site at 1 Memorial Drive, in an amazing location just south of Liberty Memorial, just West of The Federal Reserve Bank, and just east of the public art installation, created by artist, John Salvest that is titled IOU/USA.

Occupy Wall Street began as a call to march against economic policy in the U.S., particularly in regard to Big Business collusion with government and funding in politics. The failure elected leaders to bring to justice those who are responsible for the economic crisis. The Occupy Wall Street movement stands behind a call to the 99%, those of us who are not among the wealthiest 1% of our nation who wield political and financial power in the U.S, are now standing and demanding to be heard.

Occupy Kansas City stands in Solidarity with those Occupying in NYC at Liberty Park. The diversity of those occupying is the strength. We are all the 99%. We are proud to come together to voice our dissatisfaction and demand accountability, no matter the difference of our political backgrounds, heritage, and personal choices.
