11:15 – Interview with Marc Shipley

Marc Shipley, son of Tom Shipley of the musical folk-rock duo: Brewer & Shipley. Marc Shipley joins us to discuss Occupy KC which was inspired by Occupy Wall Street is an ongoing series of demonstrations in New York City, based in Zuccotti Park on Wall Street. These protests were inspired by the Arab Spring movement, especially Cairo’s Tahrir Square protests. Occupiers are protesting social and economic inequality, corporate greed, as well as the power and influence of corporations, particularly from the financial service sector, and lobbyists over government. in under 2 months, hundreds of thousands of people have demonstrated in over 900 cities. Occupy KC set up their site, on Sept. 27, 2011, at 1 Memorial Drive near the Federal Reserve Bank of KC, just south of Liberty Memorial.

Occupy KC!

The Occupy Wall Street protests seem to have entered a new phase as officials in several cities have moved in to clear camp sites and ban tents.

In New York City, the Occupy Wall Street headquarters at Zuccotti Park thinned considerably overnight after a judge ruled that the ejected protesters could return but without their camping equipment and tarps. Police even stopped people from bringing blankets into the lower Manhattan park. About 25 protesters stayed in the park overnight, but they were outnumbered by police and sanitation workers, WABC-TV reported.

Oakland and Berkeley, Calif., officials have enforced similar bans on overnight stays.

How did you get involved in OccupyKC?

The organizational structure: horizontal, transparent, consensus-based process during our General Assemblies, and you are encouraged to participate. The Occupiers are quick to note that this is a movement with no official leaders or titles. The is a community, consensus approach to decision making, planning.

GENERAL ASSEMBLIES (GAs) are held every night at 6:30pm. Everyone is welcome. Times for other events are on the Calendar. The group has joined with labor leaders, and activists and community members from a wide range.

November 17th is a national day of action against policies that have enriched the 1% while impoverishing the 99%.

Occupy KC askes, How can we continue to bail out the rich and prop up corrupt corporations when we have 30 million unemployed and underemployed Americans? Our roads are crumbling. Our sewers are rotting. Our schools are falling apart! How can we afford to keep blowing up infrastructure in overseas wars of aggression, and spend $44.6 billion in taxpayer funds on rebuilding Iraq, when so much work needs to be done here at home?

On November 17th Occupy KC will declare an Economic Emergency for the 99%. People in KC and in 35 other cities across the country will gather at structurally unsound bridges and other decaying infrastructure sites to demand that America stop enriching the 1% at the expense of basic needs that benefit all. It’s time to get America back to work. We call on Congress to create job growth, cut foreign spending, and make Wall Street pay.

In this new production, Heidi, David and Bess continue the romp, poking fun at their hybrid celebrity character who is equal parts: Kim Kardashians, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and Britney Spears. “Bump” opens last Friday night and continues through Nov. 14 at the Fishtank Performance Studio, 1715 Wyandotte St. For more info you can visit: fishtanktheater.com.

Judy Ancel is Director of the Institute for Labor Studies and Host and producer of The Heartland Labor Forum, heard every Thursday Evening at 6:00 PM on 90.1 FM KKFI.

The movement known as “Occupy Wall Street” has spread far beyond its starting point in lower Manhattan and now has offshoots in 25 cities nationwide, from D.C. to Alabama to Portland, to Topeka. Demonstrators are protesting everything from corporate greed to joblessness to economic inequality. Occupy KC has set up a site at 1 Memorial Drive, in an amazing location just south of Liberty Memorial, just West of The Federal Reserve Bank, and just east of the public art installation, created by artist, John Salvest that is titled IOU/USA.

Occupy Wall Street began as a call to march against economic policy in the U.S., particularly in regard to Big Business collusion with government and funding in politics. The failure elected leaders to bring to justice those who are responsible for the economic crisis. The Occupy Wall Street movement stands behind a call to the 99%, those of us who are not among the wealthiest 1% of our nation who wield political and financial power in the U.S, are now standing and demanding to be heard.

Occupy Kansas City stands in Solidarity with those Occupying in NYC at Liberty Park. The diversity of those occupying is the strength. We are all the 99%. We are proud to come together to voice our dissatisfaction and demand accountability, no matter the difference of our political backgrounds, heritage, and personal choices. As individuals we come together, for our strength is in our numbers.

The unemployment rate in the U.S. is at 9.1% and in Kansas City it is 8.5%. (http://bls.gov/web/metro/laummtrk.htm)

10:35 – Interview with Sean Starowitz and Joy Costa

Originally from Louisville Kentucky, Sean Starowitz, is a recent graduate of The Kansas City Art Institute, and founder of BREAD! KC, an art project he conceived in 2010 that creates funding for local artists by hosting a dinner, where for a $10 donation, diners are served a bowl of fresh soup, fresh baked bread, and a ballot. Three different creative projects are presented, and diners vote for one to receive the money collected from the evening. In under a year, BREAD! KC has awarded over $3000.00 in micro-grants to area writers, gardeners, bands and artists. Joining us in the conversation was Joy Costa who along with Andrew Erdrich became partners with Sean to continue creating BREAD! KC events.

Sean, talked about how moving to KC, going to art school, during the recession, meant that some of his Community Art Projects were motivated by hunger, including his “Wheels for Meals project.” Another early project that Sean was a part of was the “S’Mores Cart” with Kurt Flecksing, and “No Show Thursdays.”

Food and Art seem to always go together, with Culinary Artists working to make our food into art. Kansas City is know for many great restaurants, and many great art spaces too, and often they come together, like Cafe Sebastienne at The Kemper Museum of Modern Art. BREAD! KC seems to celebrate a more basic element, that we all need to eat, and why not find a creative, community art project, to share the feast and make new connections.

Joy has had the opportunity to work in many of KC’s finest kitchens and currently works for Bistro Kids. Sean was offered a job working for Farm to Market Bakery, through his work with BREAD! KC. Door to Door Organics and Farm to Market have been a big help to BREAD! KC. BREAD! KC events have raised over $3000.00 in under a year for worthy projects.

Andy Erdrich, Erin Alm Shipman, Winifred Wright are part of BREAD! KC Team and are currently looking to find a venue for your September 25th BREAD! KC Event. In October the BREAD! KC event will be at the Kansas City Art Institute. More info at breadkc.wordpress.com

18. Stephin Merritt – “The Sun and the Sea and the Sky”

from: Obscurities / Merge Records / August 30, 2011

[In 1999, The Magnetic Fields’ three-CD collection 69 Love Songs established Stephin Merritt as one of this generation’s most talented songwriters. The Los Angeles Times hails Merritt as “one of indie-rock’s most acclaimed figures.” For those who’ve wondered if the Magnetic Fields had a spare, 70th love song in the cupboard back in 1999, the answer is yes: “The Sun and the Sea and the Sky,” which skewers songwriting clichés about the natural world even as Mr. Merritt beckons his lover to frolic in the great outdoors. Stephin Merritt writes that “this song didn’t go on 69 Love Songs because it wasn’t actually about romantic love. Now it sounds like a Germanic hymn to nature, as directed by Leni Riefenstahl.” This previously unreleased track is part of Stephin Merritt release, Obscurities, in his return to Merge Records. This is a collection of Merritt’s hard-to-find recordings dating back to his time on Merge (1994 1999) and prior, as well as five previously unreleased tracks. The Magnetic Fields will be releasing their new album on Merge in early 2012.]

19. Death Cab For Cutie – “Underneath the Sycamore”

from: Codes and Keys / Atlantic Records / May 27, 2011

[7th studio album was recorded in studios up and down the West Coast, in short bursts over a period of seven months. Lead singer and band lyricist, Ben Gibbard stated, “I feel like if there is a theme of home throughout the record, it has as much to do because of the changes that have happened in my life,” Gibbard says. “I’ve moved from Seattle to Los Angeles, I’ve gotten married, I’ve rediscovered what the definition of home is.”.]
