2. Ernest James Zydeco – “Pearlie Pearl”

[Hailing from KC Missouri, the band lineup has been constant since 2008: Ernest James on accordion and vocals, Barry Barnes on washboard, Jaisson Taylor on drums, Mike Stover on bass guitar, and Tony LaCroix on guitar. This album also includes 4 songs featuring KC’s own Betse Ellis (of The Wilders). Recorded and mixed in KC at Markosa Studios, with Mark Thies. The album was mastered by Collin Jordan at The Boiler Room in Chicago. Ernest James and Jaisson Taylor co-wrote and co-produced the songs.]

3. Alt-J – “Fitzpleasure”
from: An Awesome Wave / Infectious Records / September, 2012
[Debut. Winner of the 2012 British Mercury Prize. Pronounced “alt-J”, the delta sign is created when you hold down the alt key on your computer keyboard and punch ‘J’ on a Mac computer. The symbol has a deeper meaning, the band explains that, “in mathematical equations it’s used to show change.” Gwil, Joe Newman [guitar/vocals], Gus Unger-Hamilton [keyboards] and Thom Green [drums] met at Leeds University in 2007.]

4. Organic Proof – “Follow Your Heart”
from: Johan [EP] / Independent / February 21, 2012
[Acoustic song-writing project of multi-instrumentalist Brandon Draper, along with Barclay Martin and Rick Willoughby. Johan was inspired by the writings of Brandon’s 4th great grandfather Johan Augustin Pihl, a Swedish Immigrant that settled in the Kansas Plains in 1860. On Nov. 12 Organic Proof released a new single track called “Simple” at organicproof.bandcamp.com.]

[Brandon Draper and Barclay Martin have created the Grassroots Concert Series at KC Academy at 7933 Main St., a 3-evening event, and fundraiser for the Academy, a not-for-profit school. 5. Helen Gillet – “Carolina”

[A familiar face in New Orleans’ experimental jazz scene. Her first New Orleans-recorded album, “Running of the Bells,” was released last year. Helen Gillet’s new album has been compared to intensity and grace of John Cale and the recordings of the Velvet Underground and Nick Drake.]

6. Sarah Jaffe – “Mannequin Woman”

[2nd full length release. Produced by John Congleton, showing another side of the amazing, 26 year old singer-songwriter from Denton, Texas. Very different from last year’s “Suburban Nature,” the new release shows the part of her that liked to dance and listen to hip-hop and cover Robyn songs live. “Glorified High.” Sarah Jaffe been on tour with Norah Jones and Blitzen Trapper in June and July.]

B.J. and Tod have been playing music together for 30 years.

At one time B.J. and Tod performed as “Lobster Boy and Shrimp Girl.”

Tod Davis and Bj McArthur moved to Kansas City from Pensacola Florida. Once in KC they changed their band’s name to: Two Headed Cow, for a more regional appeal.

Paleface was mentored in songwriting from Daniel Johnston in 1989, in New York City, where he was a friend and roommate of Beck who credits Paleface as an early influence. In 1990 Danny Fields (manager of The Stooges, The Ramones, MC5, and The Doors) discovered Paleface at a NYC open mic, and signed on as his manager. Paleface has released 17 albums, and toured with Crash Test Dummies, Billy Bragg, The Breeders and performed with: The Moldy Peaches, Langhorne Slim, Regina Spektor, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and The Avett Brothers. currently on tour as high-energy three piece band with his darling drummer Mo and Grey Revell, in support of his Ramseur Records follow up One Big Party, Paleface plays Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club, 3402 Main St., Wed. Nov. 14, at 9:00 PM, w/ Schwervon! and Folkicide.

Paleface has been making music, and touring, and writing so many songs since the late 1980s. he has seen the music business from the inside out, and back again. Paleface talked with us about when he knew that music would be central in his life.

In 1990 Danny Fields (manager of The Stooges, The Ramones, MC5, and The Doors) discovered Paleface at a NYC open mic, and signed on as manager for 8 years.

We talked with Paleface about the anti-folk scene in NYC.

Paleface credits a show organized by New Jersey singer/songwriter Nicole Atkins at Lach’s Antihoot in NYC, featuring: Regina Spektor, Langhorne Slim, Jaymay and the Avett Brothers all in one room—as a night that changed his life.

In 2005 PALEFACE he was invited by The Avett Brothers to their studio to join in the making of Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions. Thirty-one songs were recorded, including five written by Paleface. “Dancin Daze” was chosen for the final release. Later that year Multi-bean Vol.2 was compiled and released.

In 2007, Paleface and girlfriend-drummer Monica “Mo” Samalot left NYC and relocated to North Carolina in order to tour on a full-time basis as an Indie folk duo.

They are both featured on The Avett Brothers record Emotionalism.

A Different Story (2008) was released next. It features guest performances by The Avett Brothers. Paleface continued to tour with Monica “Mo” Samalot. They performed at festivals such as Floyd Fest, Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival, and Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion.
In 2009, the duo released their full length Ramseur Records debut The Show Is On The Road”. Produced by Grey Revell and Paleface, The record features guest performances by Seth Avett, Bob Crawford and Joe Kwon of The Avett Brothers.

Paleface and drummer Mo spent the next year touring from coast to coast in support of the album, including performances at festivals such as Pickathon (Portland, OR), Riverbend (Chattanooga TN) and Bristol Rhythm And Roots (Bristol, VA-TN), as well as showcases such as Tennessee Shines @ Bijou Theatre (WDVX Knoxville TN), Non-com (WXPN & World Cafe Live, Philadelphia PA), and South By Southwest Festival (Austin, TX). And right after SXSW Festival, The Denver Post featured Paleface as one of the “Top 10 Standout SXSW bands of 2010”!

On April 2010 Paleface released his Ramseur Records full length follow-up “One Big Party”, which features girlfriend Monica “Mo” Samalot on drums and vocals, among other friends. The record was produced by Paul ‘Ena’ Kostabi (Cults, The Willowz, Dee Dee Ramone).

The duo celebrated the release with a special guest-performance alongside friends The Avett Brothers at the Avett’s sold out Radio City Music Hall show Oct 13th 2010, followed by an US and Europe tours.

We talked with Paleface about his paintings.

On November 21, 2011, Paleface released: Multibean Vol.3,” at: paleface.bandcamp.com, features 16 tracks carefully selected (and sequenced) by PF….from an extended collection of rough demos, raw home tape recordings, live show performances, and album outtakes from 1990’s to 2008.

18. The Avett Brothers – “Die Die Die”

[Paleface contributed to the 5th full length release, and the album that launched The Avett Brothers into the national spotlight, catching the eye of producer Rick Rubin who signed on to produce their 2009 release “I And Love And You.” This folk rock band from Concord, North Carolina is made up of two brothers, Scott Avett, playing the banjo and Seth Avett, playing the guitar, and Bob Crawford who plays the stand-up bass, with Joe Kwon, cello, and Jacob Edwards, drums. The band’s 7th studio release, “The Carpenter” came out this year on September 11, also produced by Rick Rubin.]

19. Joni Mitchell – “Dime Store in Des Moines”
from: Mingus / Asylum / 1979
[10th studio album by Joni Mitchell, and a collaboration with jazz musician Charles Mingus. Recorded in the months before his death, it would be Mingus’s final musical project; the album is wholly dedicated to him. All of the lyrics are by Mitchell, while the music for four of the songs was composed by Mingus, three being new tunes, a fourth being his tribute to saxophonist Lester Young from his 1959 classic Mingus Ah Um, “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”, for which Mitchell wrote a set of lyrics. As with the release preceding, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter, Mitchell hired personnel from jazz fusion group Weather Report to play on the sessions. Mingus would also mark the first reunion of saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Herbie Hancock in the studio since recording together on Shorter’s seminal Native Dancer album, featuring Milton Nascimento, released in September 1974.”God Must Be a Boogie Man” was the only song Mingus was unable to hear, having taken shape two days after his death. The artwork features paintings by Mitchell of Mingus. It peaked at #17 on Billboard Pop Albums chart.]
