“Small but perfectly formed…My Ukulele”

Maria Vasquez Boyd returned as Guest Producer and Guest Co-Host for a special program that celebrates the culture, music, and the popularity of the small but perfectly formed ukulele. Ukulele roughly translates as “jumping flea” and originated in the 19th century as an Hawaiian interpretation of a small guitar.

Joe Frogge talked about the formation of Ukulele Fight Club and helped to teach Mark how to play the Ukulele. Mark could play a C and a G chord, but his fingers were sore rom pulling weeds and he has never played a string instrument before in his life.

Dia de los Muertos / Day of the Dead.

In most regions of Mexico, November 2, Día de los Muertos or “Day of the Dead” remembers adults who have passed on, with the building of private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. This Mexican holiday is filled with joy and celebration, colorful flowers, candles, photographs, food, and music. Folks honor and celebrate their deceased friends and family who return to earth on this day, Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead.

Judy Kock is Director of Education and Interpretive Programs at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in collaboration with The Consulate of Mexico, Guadalupe Centers, Inc., and the Mattie Rhodes Center, present, Day of the Dead Festival, Sunday, Nov. 6, 1:00 – 4:00 PM, in Kirkwood Hall. At 1:00 PM –there will be the Blessing of the Altar. At 2:15 PM, Students in Day of the Dead costumes will parade through Kirkwood Hall with percussion instruments. All afternoon live mariachi music and folk dancing, will be happening along with art projects, and sugar-skull and paper-cutting demonstration.

Paula Crawford is a singer-songwriter who grew up in Independence, Missouri listening to her dad’s music collection of Charley Pride and Charlie Rich. Paula performs as a solo artist and as a duo with Jason Vivone. She also sings back up with The Billy Bats. Paula’s debut solo record “Pretty Pretend” was recorded in early 2010 and includes 10 of her original songs.

Jason Vivone is the former Kansas City Blues Society’s International Blues Challenge solo winner. His band the Billy Bats were crowned KINGS OF THE ROOTS at the showdown at the Blue Note in Columbia, Missouri. In an annual event held by the Missouri Lottery and the Roots and BBQ fest, the Billy Bats beat out three other bands with their soulful, energetic live show. In January, Jason Vivone’s new solo CD “MY ROARING TWENTIES” was released to acclaim and terrific on-line sales. In March the new line up of the Billy Bats opened for Fishbone and also performed at the SXSW Festival in Austin.

Jason Vivone was recently in a car accident that injured his head, back, and neck. He is still recovering.

A concert to help Jason will happen this Friday, November 4 at CODA, at 1744 Broadway in Kansas City. This show will include a huge line-up of local talent including: Heather Thornton, Stovepipe Perkins, Woo, Karen Baum and Tom Tipton, Paula Crawford, Ben Hoppes, Michael Vande, Michael Aloysius Lefever-Vargas, Pam Minthorn, Kyle Wallen, and The Billy Bats.
