[Recorded by ET in Greenpoint Brooklyn. Mixed at Olive Juice Studios, NYC. Kansas City based 2 piece rock band, that tours all over the USA and Europe. Nan plays drums and Matt plays guitar and they both sing. They lived in NYC for 15 years before moving to KC. Their music and their live shows are exceptional. Generally at their live shows at one point in the show, Matt will read an original poem, written for the evening, while Nan steps out from behind the drums to performs an interpretive dance inspired, in the moment, by Matt’s poem. Matt also performs and records as Major Matt Mason USA , Nan also performs and records as, Nan and The One Nite Stands. Easily this is one of my all time favorite bands!!!]

3. Japanese Breakfast – “Road Head”

[Japanese Breakfast is the solo musical project of Michelle Zauner of Little Big League. Under the alias, Zauner has released two studio albums: Psychopomp (2016) and Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017). Prior to her solo project, Michelle Zauner fronted Post Post, an indie pop band with students from Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges, then started the Philadelphian emo band Little Big League. Zauner fronted the band between 2011 and 2014, before returning to her hometown of Eugene, Oregon in 2013. Zauner made the trek back home in the wake of her mother being diagnosed with cancer.While at home, tending her family in Oregon, Zauner began recording solo music. Zauner described the project as having much more to say following Tropical Jinx, the 2014 studio album by Little Big League. Originally, Zauner had begun to record early samples of music as a self-meditative and “instant-gratification” feeling.[3] Two years later, the solo project itself eventually became the work of Psychopomp the debut album by Japanese Breakfast. The name of the band, according to Zauner is a juxtaposition of Asian exoticism and American culture. Despite the name, Zauner is not of Japanese descent, but Korean descent.Zauner described the debut album as quite “dark and heavy-handed”, although she had a desire to make the music, urgent and “sonically upbeat.” On June 23, 2016, the Japanese Breakfast project was signed to the Dead Oceans label.]

[18 year old Kansas native, Keaton Conrad mixes indie rock, house, jazz, and hip-hop. Conrad spent two years as the lead singer & keyboardist in the cover band ChangeUp, performing around KC. In 2015 he released an original 5-song EP, Panic & Blame. In 2016 he recorded his first full-length LP entitled “Waves.” ]

Chase the Hoarseman plays Bottleneck in Lawrence on Friday, August 18, at 8:00 pm.

Recently Chase finished working on the debut album from Kwame Boateng.

KD Kuro is the musical project of Kwame Boateng, a Kansas City based rapper. He was born in Arlington, Virginia, and graduated from Olathe South High School in 2008. After attending Coffeyville Community College Kwame as KD Kuro started his rap career in 2012 and has been cultivating and refining his sound over the course of the last 5 years. Kwame grew up with musical influences like N.E.R.D and Missy Elliot that helped to mold the music he creates. His debut album is called “Good/Luck” and it was just released yesterday, August 1, and was co-produced by Chase the Horseman and Nathan “Geesace” Gisecke. “Good/Luck” was years in the making and Kwame is ready for Kansas City and hopefully the world to hear what he is all about.

Additional recording at The Wormhole, Goodwin House, and Cat Parrie’s apartment by Pat Goodwin and Dylan Hanwright. Mixed by John Goodmanson. Mastered by Paul Gold of Salt Mastering. Great Grandpa began in Seattle in 2014 when guitarist & vocalist Patrick Goodwin recruited bassist Carrie Miller, drummer Cam LaFlam, and vocalist Alex Menne to form a humble rock band. Inspired by the pop-sensible alternative rock of the 90’s, and offset by a mutual love for noise and math rock, the group set forth to write and record their first EP. During recording, guitarist Dylan Hanwright joined the group, solidifying the lineup. Great Grandpa began performing in the Seattle area in late 2014, frequenting the city’s DIY venues. In March of 2015, their debut EP Can Opener was released on Broken World Media. [Cracked Actor (Live Los Angeles ’74) is a live album by David Bowie. It was released posthumously as a Record Store Day release on 22 April 2017 through Parlophone record label. Produced by Bowie and mixed by Tony Visconti, it was recorded on the Diamond Dogs Tour in September 1974, some material from which appeared in the BBC documentary Cracked Actor.The full show spans across five sides of vinyl, with the sixth featuring an etching of Bowie. The album differs from the first Bowie live album, David Live, recorded on the same tour. It features a different and more R&B-oriented lineup, including long time collaborators Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar, as well as, backing singer Luther Vandross. The setlist also includes material recorded for The Gouster, an album which later would turn into Young Americans.] Pitchfork wrote: “This live album is culled from a show late in David’s Bowie’s 1974 tour. It’s heavy on material from Diamond Dogs and Aladdin Sane and finds a drug-addled Bowie in a moment of transition.”]

Vice’s debut EP, Christflow, contains the hurried flows and slick production made popular by artists like Skepta and Jme.” Aron also wrote in Shuttlecock Muaic Magazine: “Iddy Vice is a problem. The young and highly capable Kansas City rapper released a small handful of impressive singles over the course of 2016, but without much warning, just dropped his EP in its final days. “Christflow” is six songs long and not one is worth skipping.”

3. Sara Swenson – “Welcome To The Family”

[Critically acclaimed singer songwriter Sara Swenson has released some of our most played and favorite recordings of the last 10 years. Her self titled debut ended up at the top of our list of The 100 Best Recordings of 2009. In 2010 Sara Swenson released her second full length recording, “All Things Big and Small” again working with Don Chaffer in Nashville who added new layers to Sara’s great songs and voice. In November of 2011, Sara released her 5 song EP called “Never Left My Mind,” featuring her band at the time, The Pearl Snaps. In that time frame, she also had picked up two Kansas City Singer-Songwriter of the Year awards, performed with Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair, and placed a song on the season finale of ABC’s “Private Practice.” Then after the school year ended in 2012, Sara Swenson left her job as a High School English and Journalism Teacher in Platte County High School, and left the Kansas City music scene, and she flew off to the United Kingdom, where she got married. In the Spring of 2014, Sara returned to Kansas City and performed for the Folk Alliance International Conference. Runway Lights is Sara’s fourth studio album that captures snapshots of her 18-month experience of living abroad, moving from dating to marriage and sorting through the accompanying transitions and emotions. On the phone we have Milwaukee based singer/songwriter Roxi Copland, who plays the Kansas City area on Tuesday, July 11, at 7:30 at InterUrban ArtHouse, 8001 Newton Street, Overland Park, Kansas.

Also joining us is Wolfe Brack Director of Operations at InterUrban ArtHouse, and Joy Baker a multi-media artist and owner of Createful Studios, LLC. Joy is a full time artist who has studio space at InterUrban ArtHouse.

Since 2008 Roxi Copland has released two EPs, two singles, a collaborative live album, a solo acoustic LP and two full-band LPs.

Roxi Copland grew up in Aberdeen Washington, but came to the midwest to go to school at Grinnell college near Des Moines, Iowa. Roxi Copland currently lives in Milwaukee.

InterUrban ArtHouse was founded in 2011 by local artist Nicole Emanuel, with 10 artist studios and a programming space.

Its mission has been to provide affordable work space to artists, as well as arts business classes, while bringing arts and cultural events to the Johnson County area.

InterUrban ArtHouse recently purchased the post office at 8001 Newton St (across from the former church basement they’ve been using) and renovated its 2000 square feet of space to expand their artist studios from 10 to 29, with over 40 artists and create a large gallery. We also have indoor and outdoor performance spaces for musicians and performers.

With their recent expansion, InterUrban ArtHouse now has two locations (across the street form one another at 8001 Newton Street and 8001 Conser Street) in Historic Downtown Overland Park.

InterUrban ArtHouse is looking to work with local & traveling musicians and performers of all sorts and get a live music series up and running. They also have a children’s and teen art camp that started last week, and we’ll also be offering art and writing classes to the public in the near future.

Along with the Tuesday, July 11 show with Roxi Copland, InterUrban ArtHouse is also hosting a grand opening of their newly expanded facility at 8001 Newton St in downtown OPKS on July 21 that will feature artwork from our 40 studio artists! Exhibition, studio tours (both at Newton and Conser Street locations) and live entertainment by local jazz duo A La Mode.

Their ArtSmart program provided after school programming to at risk 5th & 6th graders. They also worked in grades K-6 in six schools. The summer months provided a no cost art opportunity each Wednesday to over 1350 children at the OP Farmer’s Market. In total, InterUrban ArtHouse served over 4,200 children!

Their entrepreneurial program, ArtWorks, hosted over 28 of classes to 277 small creative business owners, helping them advance their businesses.

ArtMatters continues to grow, offering a place for artists to teach as well as learn. The ArtHouse hosted 42 classes that were attended by over 370 seeking advancement in their creative practice.

Bringing art to the community, ArtsConnect reached large audiences through art exhibitions in Johnson County public libraries , stages at Overland Park’s Fall Fest, and each month on Local Life 3rd Fridays in our studios.

The InterUrban ArtHouse – Art Therapy program continues to provide an important alternative to traditional therapeutic options, in 2016 ArtHeals facilitated 26 events for our community.

11:21 – Interview with Kathryn Golden of Porchfest KC

The 4th Annual PorchFest KC, is scheduled for Saturday, October 14, in Midtown, KCMO, from Noon to 5:00 PM. Today on the show we’re playing music from three participating musical artists in this year’s festival, and we just heard KC based Keaton Conrad, who is signed up to play this year’s PorchFest. Registration is now open for bands wanting to apply. All genre welcomed.

Joining us to share details of Porchfest KC is Kathryn Golden who grew up in rural north-central Missouri. After college, she moved to the east coast on a whim to be an au paire. She spent her off days wandering the streets of New York City, plotting how she might permanently live in an urban area without it being in a cardboard box or having twenty roommates. When her job in NYC ended, she moved to Kansas City, where she landed her first and only truly corporate job — she taught a 30-day mutual fund program to customer service and tech workers. Eventually she moved to St Louis, where she was introduced to non-technical opportunities in tech companies. After a business trip to San Francisco, she decided she needed to live there. Over the next 14 years, she worked for a number of tech startups in project management, as well as a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley. In addition, she co-founded a non-profit, all-ages jazz performance space in Berkeley, where kids could jam with, and open for, adult acts. She also owned a neighborhood grocery market. and her final role before returning to Kansas City was in helping develop demonstratives (graphics) for large white-collar crime trials. While there, she also partnered with the Oakland School District to create a dozen libraries in Oakland’s elementary schools. Since returning to Kansas City, Kathryn has launched a wintertime storytelling series at the Pilgrim Chapel, and most notably launched a unique music festival in Midtown. She is the founder of PorchFestKC, a community music festival that takes place from front porches. This October 14th will mark the fourth year for the event.

For PorchFest KC – All performances are 60 minute sets. Performances are acoustic or near-acoustic. The goal is to be heard to the sidewalk, not down the street. This is an all-ages, alcohol free event. Registration is now open at http://www.porchfestkc.com.

16. The Host Country – “Deep Down”

[The Host Country was born while Ty Wistrand on guitar & vocals and Diana Weishaar on keyboards & vocals were both attending the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. They shared a passion for similar artists and styles of writing that led them to begin collaborating together . They officially began playing under the name ‘The Host Country’ shortly after Ty moved to Des Moines in early 2011 and started playing proper venues both there and in Cedar Falls shortly thereafter. In May 2011 they recorded an EP at the Sonic Factory Studios in Des Moines which displays the folk and rock roots they built their sound on, then in 2014 they released a full length album recorded at Midday Studios in Des Moines, Iowa from February 2013 through March 2014, with bass, drums, strings, organ, and an overall bigger sound. Tom Rue on bass) and Ethan Weishaar on drums are now permanent and essential members of the evolving Host Country music where you can now hear a bit of everything, from folk to rock, Americana, blues, and beyond.]

Traditional & future folk inspired by explorers Lewis & Clark showing how Betse & Clarke are trailblazers of sound & vision. “River Still Rise,” is a collection of originals and reworked traditional compositions that are presented “to be enjoyed as a musical adventure, much like the river exploration of the famous duo Lewis & Clark, an inspiration for the band’s name.” Betse Ellis writes in the extended liner notes: “The phrase River Still Rise appears in the journals of Meriwether Lewis, and to me, most notably when the Corps of Discovery readied their boats and supplies for the beginning of their river journey. Documenting all the details of the excursion included aspects of the weather, the general demeanor or specific behavior of the crew, and most certainly the level of the river. The river needed to be high enough to be navigable, and in that way, Clarke and I have been putting together our gear and supplies, building our boat, and watching the weather signs for about a year and a half at this point. The process of recording RSR took several months, beginning in early 2016. We made this recording at home with the best gear we could acquire at this point, and with Clarke’s long-built engineering and producing knowledge.”]

Next week, on July 12, we celebrate the 6th Annual Lawrence Field Day Fest, July 13-15 in Downtown Lawrence. At 10:15 members of the band Instant Karma join us to share music from their new EP, Trying to Find My Mind, to be released July 22. Instant Karma play Lawrence Field Day Fest, Thursday July 13, at 8:45 PM at Jackpot Lounge. Also joining us is the new KC based, 4-piece band, She Said, made up of Jennie Ferguson on vocals & guitar, Scott Mize on guitar, Doug Hitchcock on drums, and Matt Kesler on bass & vocals. She Said play Lawrence Field Day Fest, Friday, July 14, at 8:00 PM at The Granada Theatre Outdoor Stage. In our second hour, Fally Afani, the founder of I Heart Local Music, joins us to take over the show and play music from artists playing Lawrence Field Day Fest, July 13-15 all over downtown Lawrence with nearly 100 bands, at 8 venues.
