Since 2014 we have been celebrating the music of Calvin Arsenia who came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, and released the EPs, Moments, Prose. Last year Calvin released his full length debut, Catastrophe, and a LIVE recording from Greenwood Social Hall. This year he released the EP Caviar to special guests who attended his show at Wickstock West in West Bottoms. Standing at 6 foot 6 inches, Arsenia’s powerful vocals span a 3.5 octave range, while playing piano, banjo, guitar and harp. Calvin has played Folk Alliance International, Kansas City Fringe Fest, Apocalypse Meow, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, The Kauffman Center For The Performing Arts, The Middle of the Map Fest., The Folly Theatre. Last year he undertook a three month US/European Outlyre Tour where he has played San Francisco, Portland, Vancouver, NYC, Boston, Edinburgh, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Switzerland, Lyon and Paris. Calvin was our most played artist of 2017, and his release Castastrophe was in our Top Three of WMM’s The 117 Best Recordings of 2017.

Calvin has been traveling a lot this year. He participated in Escape to Create in Seaside Florida during the month of January. He has traveled to Australia, Gothenburg Sweden, Edinburgh Scotland. Calvin has spent time in Los Angeles recording songs for a new vinyl EP called “The L.A. Sessions,” that will be coming out on Bullseye Records sometime next year.

Calvin has also been working on his new full length album, Cantaloupe, and a special KC Release on September 15.

And Calvin And Simon Huntley are getting ready to go back on tour to Edinburgh, to Fringe By the Sea.

This year Calvin Arsenia was signed to the new Kansas City based music label, Bullseye Records started by Jim Andrews and Patrick Sprehe.

Calvin Arsenia performing a harp instrumental of a piece that was originally improvised from a show in Edinburg that Calvin recorded o his cell phone and later transposed for a friend this year who asked him to recreate the piece for a performance.

Calvin Arsenia recently performed in a staged musical called “After Persephone” that was part of the KC Fringe Festival and was performed at Arts Asylum. All of the performances were sold out.

Janovy currently oversees digital content for 89.3 FM KCUR, Kansas City’s NPR affiliate, where C.J, has also reported on arts and culture. C.J. Janovy also served as Editor of The Pitch Weekly for over a decade. C.J. Janovy received her English Degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and her Masters Degree in creative writing from Boston University.

Full disclosure: I’ve known C.J, Janovy since 1990 when she wrote a piece about Big Bang Buffet and The Spoken Word at Cafe Lulu for The New Times, one of Kansas City’s weekly newspapers of the 1990s. Many of the writers of The New Times migrated to The Pitch Weekly where C.J. served as Editor for over a decade. At one point The Pitch was owned by The Village Voice Media, and specialized in advocacy journalism.

No Place Like Home – Lessons in Activism from LGBT Kansas

This book, No Place Like Home – Lessons in Activism from LGBT Kansas, is a gift. A gift to all of the people who have fought for equality in Kansas.

C.J. Janovy writes that this project began on June 26, 2013. The day of the U.S. Supreme Court ruled by a 5-to-4 vote that the U.S. Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage.

C.J. Janovy spent over 3 years doing research for this book.

In her forward, C.J. mentions other books written about struggles for LGBTQIA Equality, in other states, realizing that the story of Kansas LGBTQIA activists needed to be told.

C.J. also refers to Frank L. Baum’s the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, published in 1900. The 1939 film version, starring Judy Garland has become a huge metaphor and symbolic piece for Gay folk everywhere.

Traveling through the story of LGBTQIA Equality in Kansas, C.J. shares the story of how Kansas has become more socially conservative from the mid 1970s to today.

This book comes out the same year as the Austin Williams documentary film, The Ordinance Project, which tells the story of how, “at the height of the AIDS crisis, the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri debated whether or not to amend its Civil Rights Ordinance to prevent discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and people with HIV/AIDS. It quickly became the most highly contested piece of legislation in Kansas City’s history, galvanizing both supporters and opponents while exposing a social divide that is still felt today.” It eventually passed in 1993, after a three year struggle. That story parallels the stories in No Place Like Home, with similar ordinances eventually passing in Manhattan, Salina and Hutchinson, Kansas.

Since May of 2014 Bill Sundahl has served as 90.1 FM KKFI’s Special Events, Volunteer, Underwriting Coordinator. Prior to that he was owner of Spice of Life Productions. For more than a decade he has produced the Crossroads Music Fest, the Spring Dance, The Donkey Show, and many more great Kansas City events. He is also a working musician, playing bass and singing in the Starhaven Rounders. Bill was honored with Urban Hero Award from the Kansas City Downtown Council in 2007 and has won two Pitch Music Awards. He’s also on the Advisory Board of the Midwest Music Foundation. Bill joins us today to share details about KKFI Collaborations, Friday June 30, at 8:00 PM at The Folly Theatre.

Kansas City based producer, and musician and keyboard player, Desmond Mason is originally from Los Angeles. He went to Southeast High school and studied History and Higher Education at UMKC. Desmond has worked at Park University, and the American Jazz Museum. Desmond is a versatile performer and composer, who desribes his music as “firmly rooted in KC Kazz, R & B, gospel, and hip-hop music and strives to be something that the audience can feel in their spirit.”

Derick Cunigan is a singer, songwriter who is originally from St. Louis, Missouri. He studied broadcasting at Northwest Missouri State University. He has worked for KMBC Channel 9, Steel City Media and KBEQ, KFKF, and KCTV Channel 5.

Together Desmond and Derick are Soul Revival an R&B/Soul duo based in Kansas City. Their debut EP, Back To Love was just released on June 2, 2017. More information at http://www.soulrevivalmusic.com

Singer songwriter Ivøry Black has been busy this year playing Crossroads Music festival, The Middle of the Map Festival, The Westport Roots Festival, the KCPT Screening of “Real Boy” at The Kansas City Publlic Library. Ivøry Black plays the Kauffman Stadium, July 1, before the 1:15pm Royals home game. Born in 1986 in Peoria Illinois, and given up for adoption at the age of four, it was difficult to find trust in people after living with eight different foster families. Running away at 15, Ivøry moved from Indiana to Oklahoma and eventually ended up in Seattle. In 2011 Ivøry moved to Kansas City, and has became a part of new family. On June 23, 2015, Ivory released the debut EP, “Ready Get Set.” Ivøry is now currently in the process of writng and recording a debut full-length album, to be released in early 2018. Ivøry Black joins us to share new songs including, “Family Tables” that will be released as a single in August. Ivøry Black plays Revolution Records, on Friday July 7. Ivøry Black played the June 9th Charity concert to raise funds for Cross-Lines.

Ivøry Black played the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library, on June 10th taking the stage for the KCPT screening of a documentary called “Real Boy” about a young man’s transition from female to male. The subject of the film, 19 year old Bennett Wallace is a talented musician and finds his voice and comfort in music.

Ivøry Black’s debut EP, Ready Get Set was released in June 2015, recorded and mastered by Larry Gann of Awestruck studios. Micah Burdick on guitar, Craig Kew on bass, and Lester Estelle, drummer for Kelly Clarkson, on drums for Ivory ‘s EP.

The new album is being recorded in Ivøry’s home studio, a dream made possible by the management skills of Klaartje Van Lue, who took the opportunity to guide Ivory’s career.

Klaartje Van Lue is Ivory’s manager and she was the one who helped IVØRY find her way to KC.

[Rachel Mallin is from Kansas City, MO. At the age of 19 she released her self produced 4-song, EP The Persistence of Vision. The songs were written and created by Rachel in her mother’s basement during the summer of 2014, and recorded, mixed, and produced by Rachel Mallin in September. “Listener’s are immersed into Rachel’s writing and production as each song musically transcends the discord of human emotion into a harmonious wave of expression.” Co-mixed by Michael Kessler. Mastered by William Reeves at Centro Cellar Studio. In less than a year following her four-track EP’s release, her songs “Razorback” and “Noise of the Night” were broadcast on radio stations in Kansas City and nationally. In 2015 Rachel formed a band called The Wild Type. Anna Selle is a very busy person. She is staff Photographer at Playlistplay, she works for for The Record Machine, and currently serves as Program Associate at The Literacy Lab. She has worked for the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in the educational department and volunteered with Americorps, Anna Selle grew up in Kansas City and studied English at Truman State University. Anna Selle is the co-founder Editor at HearQueer, a new print + digital publication featuring interviews, reviews, stories about queer identifying musicians with portions of proceeds going to local organizations working to protect and advocate for the queer community.

Anna has brought along her friend and co-founder of HearQueer, Bill Dickey who serves as Managing Editor of Hear Queer. HearQueer launches on June 30, at Mills Record Company featuring Erica Joy and Rachel Mallin & the Wild Type.

Anna Selle (editor-in-chief), Kevin Briody (art director), and Bill Dickey (managing editor). wanted to have the first issue of Hear Queer launched during “Pride Month.”

Kevin Briody, is the guitarist for emo-rock band Mess.

The first issue will benefit KC Anti Violence Project

HearQueer is named in the spirit of the LGBTQIA protest chant: “We’re Here, We’re Queer, Get Used to It.”

My friend Amy Farrand, who is the leader of the band Amy Farrand and The Like, and also plays drums for Sister Mary Rotten Crotch, and I have talked on this radio show about how, as LGBT people, we feel more accepted in the Kansas City Music Community than in the Kansas City Gay Community. Kansas City has an incredible diverse LGBTQIA Community, that lives all over the metro region, and is served by a fairly Gay friendly community, of gay bars, welcoming churches, and music and arts and theatre scene, with openly gay people being elected to our State Senate and House of Representatives and City Council.”
