After moving to Atlanta, GA, where she met OutKast’s Big Boi, Monáe founded the Wondaland Arts Society with like-minded young artists and madeappearances on Outcast’s Idlewild, where Janelle is featured on the songs “Call The Law” and “In Your Dreams”. In 2007, Monáe released her first solo work, titled Metropolis. A few months later she wassigned to Sean “Diddy” Combs’ label, Bad Boy Records.]

We first met The Clementines as a duo Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer when they played LIVE on our show last year on April 25. Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO, and studied Special Education with Music at Metropolitan MO CC, in KCMO. Tim Jenkins grew up in KC. Studied at UMKC. He has been playing music for over 10 years. Last year veteran drummer Stephanie Williams joined the band onDrums, along with Travis Earnshaw who joined the band on Bass.

1. David Bowie – “Dancing Out In Space”

[Bowie’s first new music in 10 years. In the works for over 2 years, Bowie is collaborated with longtime producer Tony Visconti who told the BBC that they worked on the new album at a very slow pace. “We never spent more than two to three weeks at a time recording,” Visconti said. “And then we’d take off as much as two months. We’d usually work on one or two songs in an afternoon and we’d whip them up to shape where they’d sound like great rock tracks. At that point there wouldn’t be any final vocals or lyrics. This is the same way I’d been working with him since The Man Who Sold the World. He hasn’t really changed in his approach.” Toward the end of Bowie’s 2004 tour in Europe the singer underwent emergency heart surgery for a blocked artery. There were rumors about Bowie’s health. Visconti told the BBC “He’s a very healthy man… I couldn’t explain how I know that, but I worked with a very healthy David Bowie in the studio and a very happy David Bowie in the studio.”]

Since 2009 Tommy Donoho has been a singer guitarist songwriter for the band Dollar Fox. In 2010 he also became the lead guitarist for The Hillary Watts Riot. In 2011 he co-founded Money Wolf Music a new Kansas City record label that has released music from alacartoona, The Rumblejetts, Hillary Watts Riot, The Peculiar Pretzelmen, and more. Tommy also performs as a solo artist.

Christian Hankel has been a guest on this radio show representing his early 1990s band Mongol Beach Party and his current bands alacartoona, and Hillary Watts Riot. Christian is a composer, singer, bassist, actor, playwright, producer, programmer, dad, and organizer. Christian has been a co-creator of original theatrical performance pieces “The Oil Boiler” staged at The Living Room, and the 2009 film “The Night is the Mirror.” Christian was seen in last year’s Fringe Festival in Sexing Hitler, and is a founder of the performance collective The Monocle.

On day 1 of The HomeGuard Festival, on Thursday, March 14, singer/songwriter Sam Baker will be playing a special intimate house concert. Christian discussed how it was his girlfriend Catherine Tronnes who introduced him to the music of Sam Baker. Catherine then called Sam Baker on the phone to ask him if he would come to KC.

Sam Baker is working on a new full-length recording to be released this year.

Christian talked about how the Folk Alliance International is relocating to Kansas City. and The Pitch?

Tommy discussed how Money Wolf Music came to be, and how this year they will be releasing their 20th recording.

In the last 5 years we’ve seen the development of The Record Machine, Golden Sound Records, Money Wolf Music, Sharp County Records, Saunders Street Records, High Dive Records. Area bands are taking control of their own destiny. It is a whole new world.

Tommy discussed the upcoming Money Wolf Music MWR014 vinyl release series. The Peculiar Pretzelmen, Jason Beers, The Hillary Watts Riot, Kevin Seconds, Dead Ven. There will probably be less than 20 of any of these albums pressed and then they’re gone for good.

18. Paul Draper Band – “I’m Coming Home”

[Paul Draper makes his debut as a leader on this recording. He spent his life as a sideman on countless recordings and tours beginning in 1964 playing Farfisa keyboard with the show/review band the Shampells. This record was produced by his son, professional Kansas City-based musician, Brandon Draper. The two have been sharing the stage since Brandon was 9 years old. Paul has been stealing the spotlight for years with his Hammond Organ skills and stage presence, AKA “The Wildman” as he was aptly named years ago for his energy and spirit. This recording features a vast array of styles of funk, blues, R&B, soul, country, and jazz, all with uplifting lyrical content. The instruments used were all vintage and there was no cutting corners on getting the right sounds spending 5 years to complete.]

19. Denison Witmer – “Keep Moving Brother, Keep Moving Sister”

[Ninth release from the singwr songwriter who has been recording for 15 years now. Hoping to print a hundred or so copies of his first CD, Safe Away (1998), a teenaged Denison found himself stuck with ten times that many, and went on his first tour in an attempt to keep the extras from going to waste. He sold the whole thousand, including one copy that found its way into the hands of the Burnt Toast Vinyl label, and a recording project intended for a tiny audience turned into a full-fledged album release.]

[Originally from Kansas City, Missouri and now based in Nashville, Tennessee. In his twenties Black began performing at Blayney’s, where he also worked as a bouncer. Soon Black began touring and eventually relocated to Nashville, Tennessee where he met, among others, Iris DeMent (Black lends some backing vocals on DeMent’s 1992 debut album, Infamous Angel). His writings have been described as “impressionistic songs that are smart without forgetting the emotional undercurrent.” His songs have been covered by Waylon Jennings, Sam Bush and BlackHawk. BlackHawk’s cover of Black’s song, “That’s Just About Right,” was a Top 10 Country single in 1994. Since then Black has released many of his own solo albums and tours widely. He also maintains his own free weekly podcast, Black Tuesdays.]

[written by Cody Critcheloe, produced by J. Ashley Miller, this new bonus track versions release features 4 additional remixes. SSION, (pronounced “shun”) was formed in 1996, in Kansas City, by multi-talented vocalist, visual artist, musician, performance artist, music video director, Cody Critcheloe. SSION, have been known for their extravagant live shows and amazingly creative and hilarious videos. SSION has toured with Gossip, Fischerspooner, CSS, and yeah yeah yeahs. Cody Critcheloe has served as Music Video Director music videos from Santigold, CSS, Peaches, Gossip, and Tilly and the Wall. SSION is currently on tour. They played Portland last night, they;ll be in San Francisco on Thursday, L.A. on Saturday, then they go to: Arizona, Texas, New Orleans, Atlanta, DC, Baltimore and Brooklyn.]

2. The ACB’s – “Ocean”

[Konnor Ervin on lead vocals, Andrew Connor on Guitar, Bryan McGuire on Bass, Kyle Rausch on Drums. David Hudnall of The Pitch wrote, “Nobody in the city is writing sharper or more inventive melodies than Ervin, who has honed his craft the old-fashioned way: working a part-time job, living in a (crappy) apartment and practicing music all the time.” One of glimpses into their new songs came from the band’s Daytrotter Sessions, in the Horseshack studios, in Rockford, Illinois. This new song is from their new recordings and is also featured in their new music video.]

[The Amazing is a collective headed by Reine Fiske of the band Dungen and singer-songwriter Christoffer Gunrup. Recorded in Stockholm, Sweden. One music writer described their music as: “elegantly constructed record of moody psychedelic majesty; it comes with a great dose of CSNY-style Laurel Canyon bliss. Between the natural melodies and soulful vocals, Gentle Stream is a feeling, an organic consequence of something that effortlessly came together.”]

5. Black Moth Super Rainbow – “Windshield Smasher”
from: Cobra Juicy / Rad Cult / October 22, 2012
[The fifth, and some say the finest, album to date from the psychedelic-electronic-experimental band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Their distinctive sound is characterized by analog electronic instruments including the vocoder, Rhodes piano and Novatron. Little is known about the band’s members who’re are all something of an enigma, keeping their true identities hidden behind monikers like:. Tobacco, Bullsmear, The Seven Fields of Aphelion Fields. One critic described their music this way: “Imagine that disco put on a blonde wig, a denim jacket, and roller-skates; then proceeded to do a considerable quantity of acid and dance around in the abandoned roller rink in your hometown.”]

6. The Ramones – “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend”
from: Ramones / Sire / April 23, 1976
[In early 1975 Lisa Robinson, an editor of Hit Parader and Rock Scene, saw the Ramones performing at the New York-based club CBGB. Robinson wrote about the band in several issues of the magazines she edited. Robinson contacted Danny Fields and asked him to manage the band, which he agreed to in November 1975. A Marty Thau-produced demo album was recorded at 914 Sound Studios and included “Judy Is a Punk” and “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” was written by their drummer, Tommy Ramone.]

13. Ross Brown – “Isn’t That Better”

[We first met Ross Brown on our February 15, WMM. He is co founder of Golden Sound Records, lead singer of the band Fullbloods, and drummer for The Empty Spaces. Ross started playing trumpet in junior high school band and continued through high school playing euphonium, guitar and bass in jazz band, and singing in choir. Music classes were all I took from “public school” during high school. He started writing music when he picked up guitar around 12 years old. Ross went to DeSoto high school for a year and home-schooled the rest. After that I took a two-year audio engineering course at BRC Audio Productions, where he met Jerad Tomasino and everyone in Fullbloods.]

[From Lawrence, Kansas, In 2009, Sam Billen released Headphones & Cellphones with The Record Machine. It was his first his first solo record in 5 years since leaving Northern Records who also released his decade-long band, The Billions, who disbanded in 2008. After the break up of the Billions, Sam took some time to focus on making his own music and starting a family. Sam works full time at the University of Kansas, and started a new business, Primary Colors Music. Sam Billen & The Billions played The Middle of The Map Fest. in April 7. 15. Laura Spiegel – “A Folk Study”
from: The Expanding Universe / Unseen Worlds / 1980
[Chicago born composer. She has worked at Bell Laboratories, in computer graphics, and is known primarily for her electronic-music compositions and her algorithmic composition software Music Mouse. Spiegel was seen by some as a pioneer of the New York new-music scene. Spiegel’s piece “Sediment” was used in the “cornucopia scene” of the 2012 movie The Hunger Games.]

16. Marco Benevento – “Limbs on a Pine”

[The man behind GRMLN, Yoodoo Park, is only nineteen years old. Wednesday MidDay Medley participated in 90.1 FM’s biggest band auction ever, with more than 100 area bands. Listeners can called to place bids. The highest bidder at the end of each segment received a 2-hour concert for their upcoming birthday, anniversary, block party, Quinceanera, company picnic, or bar mitzvah. The band auction supports 90.1 FM.

10:30 – Interview with Scott Cordes, Jan Chapman, Bill Christie and Alan Tilson

The Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre Company‘s production of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest,” begins public performances tonight, March 7, and runs through March 25. Adapted for the stage by Dale Wasserman from Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel. The play was first produced on Broadway in 1963. In 1975 Ken Kesey’s novel was adapted into an Academy Award winning film directed by Milos Forman. The Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre’s production of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” features: Jan Chapman as Nurse Ratched, Scott Cordes as McMurphy, and is directed By Bill Christie. Scott Cordes, Bill Christie, Jan Chapman and Alan Tilson, from The Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre joined us on Wednesday MidDay Medley.

Scott Cordes plays McMurphy, one of those special roles of the theatre and film, originally played by Kirk Douglas in 1963, Jack Nicholson in the 1975 film version that was based on the novel (and not the play), and Gary Sinese of the Steppenwolf Theatre’s production, that ran on Broadway, and won a Tony for Best Play Revival. Scott has been able to play many many roles, but this character seems to bring him back to those roles he has become famous for playing, from the very beginning of his professional career. Scott told us how it feels bringing McMurphy to life on stage.

Jan Chapman, is a core company member of The Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre. Jan is playing Nurse Ratched, one of the most interesting characters of the theatre and film. This role seems like a tightrope walk for the actress.

Alan Tilson, is a core company member of The Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre. He is playing Dale Harding, President of the Patients Council. Alan told us about his role, and the rehearsal process for this production.

Bill Christie has been working in KC Theatre for over 25 years and an Actor, Stage Manager, Production Manager and Director. He spends most of his time at The American Heartland Theatre. After seeing “39 Steps” last year at The American Heartland, MET founder Karen Paisley asked Bill to come direct for the MET. Bill suggested they produce this show.

Scott Cordes talked about the large cast including: Tim Ahlenius, Ari Bavel, Donette Coleman, Kyle Dyck, Dan Hillaker, Donovan Kidd, Kristin Leathers, Matt Leonard, Tyler Miller, Priest Hughes, Chris Roady, Kenzie West, Samn Wright. (Scott Cordes, Jan Chapman and Alan Tilson).

Kenneth Elton “Ken” Kesey was born in Sept. 17, 1935 – and passed on November 10, 2001. He was best known for his 1962 novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” But for many of us it was Tom Wolfe’s “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test” published in 1968 that told the story of Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters driving across the country in a psychedelic painted school bus dubbed “Further”. Kesey considered himself a link between the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the hippies of the 1960s. “I was too young to be a beatnik, and too old to be a hippie.” While based in Kesey’s counter culture P.O.V. “Cuckoo’s Nest” seems to have a universal appeal in regard to how our society deals with the extraordinary, non-conformist. Jan Chapman talked about how this play remains relevant in 2012, 50 years after it was first published.

The Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre Company along with The Living Room Theatre, are two of the newest theatre companies to emerge in the last few years. There seems to be a growth of many new theatre companies in Kansas City. Bill Christie talked about what these new companies mean for actors and theatre craftspeople, and also for audiences.

Jan and Scott and Alan have worked together in previous show at The MET and at other theatre, they talked bout what it means to be a core member of the MET Company.

The MET seems to be focused on bringing to life classic theatre. The company is not afraid of large casts and challenging musicals. Alan Tilson discussed what the MET brings to the theatre scene.

We didn’t have time to talk with Scott about his “Directing” credits which are as impressive as his “Acting” credits.

The Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre’s production of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” runs March 7 through March 25.

11:15 – Interview with Cody Wyoming, Mitch Brian, Bryan Moses, & Forrest Attaway.

Kansas City based musician, actor, director Cody Wyoming has made a name for himself as a central force behind live musical reinterpretations of musical masterpieces like: Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” and The Rolling Stones “Exile on Main Street” Cody has also become part of the theatre scene working in David Wayne Reed’s “Mother Trucker 2″ and The Oil Boiler” produced at The Living Room Theatre. Cody has reassembled many of his friends from “The Oil Boiler” along with playwright Mitch Brian to create The Living Room Theatre‘s newest production, “Bucket of Blood” a new play directed by Cody Wyoming, and adapted by Mitch Brian from the Roger Corman 1959 film.

“Bucket of Blood” opens March 22 and runs through April 1, at The Living Room, 1818 McGee, in Kansas City, MO. For more info: thelivingroomkc.com

Cody Wyoming, Mitch Brian, Bryan Moses, & Forrest Attaway joined us to talk about “Bucket of Blood.”

Cody talked about his love of the film and how he shared the movie with his girlfriend, actress Kimberely Queen, who urged him to produce a theatrical event based on the film.

Mitch Brian has written screenplays and teleplays for major Hollywood studios, television networks and independent producers. He co-created and wrote episodes for Batman: The Animated Series and co-wrote the NBC miniseries The ’70s. He has written screenplays for directors Chris Columbus, Oliver Stone and Robert Schwentke. He teaches screenwriting and film studies at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

The Coterie Theatre’s “Maul of the Dead” was Mitch Brian’s first play. Followed by “Sorority House of the Dead.” Cody had worked with Mitch and asked him to get involved in creating a script from the Roger Corman film.

Mitch talked about the challenges in bringing “Bucket of Blood” to life on stage.

The play features Matt Weiss, Kimberely Queen, Forrest Attaway, Damian Blake, Meredith Wolfe, Kelly Main, Brian Stubler, Emma Taylor, Matt Anderson, Coleman Crenshaw, and Bryan Moses.

Providing the music for the show: Johnny Hamil, Jeff Freling, Kent Burnham, Christian Hankel, and Katie Gilchrist.

Bryan Moses has worked at The Living Room Theatre as an Actor, Director, playwright and producer.

Bryan gave us the big news that The Kansas City Rep would be re-mounting The Living Room Theatre’s production of “Carousel” for their 2012-2013 Season on the Helen F. Spencer stage.
