[According to Will Toledo “This is a song about not murdering people.” Originally a started as a solo recording project by 24 year old, Will Toledo, in Leesburg, Virginia. Toledo chose the name “Car Seat Headrest” after recording the vocals of his first albums in the back seat of his car, for privacy. Car Seat Headrest released 12 albums on Bandcamp. Toledo’s production has gradually grown less lo-fi, but he still remains an effective example of the DIY ethic. Toledo saw a large influx of new fans with his 2011 release Twin Fantasy, which has become the most popular of his self-released albums. In September 2015, Car Seat Headrest announced on his Facebook page that he had signed an album deal with Matador Records. In October 2015, Car Seat Headrest released the compilation album, Teens of Style under the label. This was his first album that was not self-released via Bandcamp. His 2016 album, Teens of Denial, was created with traditional studio processes. Car Seat Headrest are currently on tour as a full band.]

Matt Clibanoff of All Things Go Music writes: “Kansas City alternative trio, The Slowdown has just released a new single off their forthcoming album. Gorgeous, though drenched despair, “Look Older” plunges into the solipsistic trench at the heart of the human condition. Guitars and synth dance in annular swirls as a voice skates across the frozen backdrop and breathily delivers the bad news: we’re all painfully and irrevocably lonely. [Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard’s latest project, is a song-for-song cover of Teenage Fanclub’s entire 1991 album, Bandwagonesque. “It’s my favorite record by my favorite band of all time,” Gibbard said in a press release. “It came along at a pivotal time in my musical life and I’ve loved it for over 25 years. It’s been such a blast taking these songs apart to see how they work and then putting them back together again.”]

5. Krystle Warren – “Thanks and Praise”

[Produced by Krystle Warren and Ben Kane (D’Angelo, Emily King, PJ Morton). Recorded, engineered, and mixed by Ben Kane. Written & performed by Krystle Warre. Mixed at The Garden, Brooklyn. Mastered & cut by Alex DeTurk at Masterdisk. Last year in Krystle Warren premiered this song and her other new songs from this album at the Middle of the Map Fest in a packed room at Californos in Westport and later at The Polsky Theatre for the Performing Arts Series of Johnsons County Community College. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” On the radio show last year Krystle shared inspirations for this record, early gospel recordings, that crossed over into Jazz from Pharoah Sanders, Edwin Hawkins, and The Swan Silvertones. Originally from KC, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label, Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs: A Time You May Embrace” a recording from a 13-day session in Brooklyn, where she recorded 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections.]

6. Broken Social Scene – “Protest Song”

[Hug of Thunder is the 5th studio album by Toronto, Ontario based, indie rock musical collective Broken Social Scene that was formed in 1999 and continues 15 members. Most of its members play in various other groups and solo projects, mainly in the city of Toronto. These associated acts include Metric, Feist, Stars, Apostle of Hustle, Do Make Say Think, KC Accidental, Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton, Amy Millan, and Jason Collett. The group’s sound combines elements of all of its members’ respective musical projects, and is occasionally considered baroque pop. It includes grand orchestrations featuring guitars, horns, woodwinds, and violins, unusual song structures, and an experimental, and sometimes chaotic production style from David Newfeld, who produced the second and third albums.After declaring a hiatus in September 2011, Broken Social Scene performed at the Field Trip Arts & Crafts Music Festival in 2013 and a couple of festivals in 2015, the latter of which prompted band members Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Charles Spearin, Justin Peroff, and Andrew Whiteman to discuss recording new material. “When we’re working, we understand that there will be a lot more input, so we leave space in the music as we’re writing it,” Spearin said. “We would send out invitations for all the usual crew, and say, ‘Hey, we’re doing this again. Would you be interested in being part of this?'” In the end, 18 musicians were credited on Hug of Thunder. During sessions for the album, Leslie Feist conceived the idea for the title track, her first lead vocal on a Broken Social Scene song since 2006.[3] Drew explained that the title represents “exactly who we are. That is our show. We’re trying to create that hug of thunder. That sound. That embrace amongst the chaos.]

Patrick Keizer, born February 2, 1994, 23 years, is from Lawrence, Kansas. He graduated from Blue Valley North High School. Patrick studied Special Education at University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.

Josiah Hunter is originally from the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area. While Patrick Keizer was going to University of North Texas he met Josiah and they started creating music together. Josiah eventually moved to Kansas City. He works at Westport Cafe.

Davy Langerak, born April 30, 1991. He plays bass. He is originally from Arvada, Colorado.

Bennett Jones, born December 10, 1992, plays drums. He works at Voltaire, 1617 Genessee St. with Wes Gartner.

Johnny Hamil and Marco Pascolini are original members of Mr. Marco’s V7 a band that was formed in the 1990s and released their debut record, “Cowtown Ballroom Sessions” in 1997. That record is now out of print, however the original lineup will reunite for a special “Cocktail Hour” performance on Saturday, August 26, 7:00 PM at Davey’s Uptown Rambler’s Club, 3402 Main St, KCMO, where the band first performed live in the early 90s. Marco Pascolini, Johnny Hamil, Chris Fugitt, and Clark Wyatt formed the original band and will be playing material from this era. Mark Southerland will join the band as a special guest, just as he did on the album before he officially joined the band. Chad Meise will be running the sound and spinning tiki lounge tracks when the band isn’t performing.

Johnny Hamil, and Marco Pascolini, thanks for being with us on WMM.

Johnny Hamil grew up in KCK. Johnny has also played in the bands Pamper the Madman, Malachy Papers and with many collaborations. Johnny is a teacher and organizes the Kansas City Bass Camp

Marco Pascolini grew up in a family of artists. His parents were both artists at Hallmark. Marco has played in the bands The Naughty Pines, Scott Hrabko and the Rabbits, Folkicide, Dead Voices, Mr. Marco’s V7, Expassionates, the Brannock Device, Snakebite Orphans, The Country Duo, and Fred Wickham

Mr. Marco’s V7 was titled after Johnny’s determination to put Marco’s name in the title of the band and Marco’s randomly looking at a hair tonic’s bottle’s secret formula (V7).

Johnny Hamil’s notes:

The three V7 songs we are playing on the radio show today are more in the genre of “exotic lounge” but early V7 also had a lot of rockabilly stuff on that first record. We were a short lived rockabilly band called the Rod Knockers, this was before Marco and I started the V7. In the first incarnation of the band, members merged together styles and genre that were not normally mixed together. Marcos and I didn’t accept classifications so easily. The music wasn’t forced in any specific way, we just went where we wanted to go. Truly my favorite part of our music is the trust we all have in each other. It brought out the uniqueness of the music.

The first band/album highlighted Marco Pascolini’s compositions the most. The record really highlights his unique playing style (really unlike any other guitar player). So to some extent, the first album is the most unique out of all our records (all are based on taking some left turn and very worked out compositions until we found a new sound). So, no V7 record sounds the same on purpose. However the first one is so darn happy!

We will be trying to re-issue the first V7 record, “Cowtown Ballroom Sessions” later this year. The packaging won some design awards since Marco is an amazing graphic designer as well as musician (his whole family are well known artists, mostly his father and mother who helped put Hallmark on the map). His father is from a small town near Florence, Italy so art has been in his family for a longtime. Marco Pascolini’s flyers and artwork are on everything we’ve done.

V7 — Mr. Marco’s V7, that is — tops all of this column’s area alphabetical representatives in numerous categories: best packaging (a round-edged screw-fashioned cardboard concoction); best song titles (“The Yin & Yang of a Killing Device … in Homage to My Mother’s Wooden Spoon”), and, last but not least, best music. Recorded live at El Torreon in 1997, well before the venue’s resurgence as a punk club, Cowtown Ballroom Sessions captures one of the area’s sharpest instrumental ensembles at its freewheeling best, with the fascinating interaction between lead guitarist Marco Pascolini and Fender Rhodes player Clarke Wyatt fueling the group’s sometimes funky, often jazzy, invariably engaging explorations.

Their music is “an expression of imperfect love through jagged rock minimalism.” Their casual interactions on stage, combined with a love of dance and poetry, result in some unique live show experiences. Schwervon! is a two piece American band born on the Lower East Side of New York City. Their band name is taken from the warped abbreviation of an urban slang, meaning: “to do something well in one’s own way or in a unique manner, usually involving members of the opposite sex.”

Schwervon! have been described as Antifolk, Minimalist Rock, Noise Pop, DIY, and even 90’s Indie Revivalist. Their longish career spans five albums and three seven inches. Schwervon! are a perpetual experiment between a drumset, a guitar, a couple and a song. But a particular reaction to their music has remained consistent, as David Gedge of The Wedding Present so eloquently put it: “I’m not sure how just two people manage to make such a big sound!”

Live Schwervon! performance intermissions occasionally involve Matt reciting original poetry while Nan improv dances amongst the audience.

Schwervon’s album Courage was recorded in Memphis, Tennessee, with Doug Easley (Cat Power, Pavement, Breeders). Guest artists included Frances McKee (The Vaselines, Sunny Moon) and Dave Shouse (Grifters, Those Bastard Souls).

[In 1967, two teenage friends, Bobby Nunn and Eugene Copland, were the stars of Mo Do Records, a Buffalo, New York, independent record label run by Bobby’s dad, William Nunn. As BOB & GENE they recorded several sides for the label along with other local gospel and soul artists and the dozen or so 45s on Mo Do. William Nunn’s dream of a Bob & Gene album would never be realized in his lifetime. 40 years later, Daptone Records pulled together these recordings into an album called BOB & GENE’S IF THIS WORLD WERE MINE, released in February 2007 on vinyl, and sold out quickly and has remained out-of-print ever since. It’s stature has grown over the years and is, these days, a desirable but hard-to-find record for fans of sweet soul. A decade later Daptone records is reissuing this record on vinyl, this time with TWO bonus cuts.]

6. Noname – “Casket Pretty”

[Noname was born Fatimah Warner on September 18, 1991. She is a poet and hip hop recording artist from the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. She has been rapping and performing slam poetry in Chicago since 2010. In 2013 she gained wider recognition and acclaim following her appearance on the track “Lost” from Chance the Rapper’s mixtape Acid Rap. Telefone is centered around important telephone conversations that Noname has had over the years. Her rap speaks of black women’s pain and also highlights the struggles of growing up in Chicago. On December 18, she appeared with Chance the Rapper on Saturday Night Live.Chicago based Noname was recently featured on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series.

[Noname is currently on tour and plays St. Louis, Missouri, for Loufest, Sunday, Sept 10.]

[Produced by Krystle Warren and Ben Kane (D’Angelo, Emily King, PJ Morton). Recorded, engineered, and mixed by Ben Kane. Written & performed by Krystle Warre. Mixed at The Garden, Brooklyn. Mastered & cut by Alex DeTurk at Masterdisk. Last year in Krystle Warren premiered this song and her other new songs from this album at the Middle of the Map Fest in a packed room at Californos in Westport and later at The Polsky Theatre for the Performing Arts Series of Johnsons County Community College. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” On the radio show last year Krystle shared inspirations for this record, early gospel recordings, that crossed over into Jazz from Pharoah Sanders, Edwin Hawkins, and The Swan Silvertones. Originally from KC, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label, Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs: A Time You May Embrace” a recording from a 13-day session in Brooklyn, where she recorded 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections.]

Kansas City based vocalist Erin Keller is originally from Waukee, Iowa. She was born in August, in 1980. Erin has been singing on a professional level for 25 years. Erin sang with the internationally competitive Des Moines Children’s Choir for 5 years, and 3 years in All-State choir in high school, which helped her earn a voice performance degree from the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, in 2002. Erin peforms with the Grammy-Award winning Kansas City Chorale. Erin has also worked as a featured soloist with Owen Cox Dance Ensemble, New Ear, KC jazz musicians, the big band at University of Colorado, a West African Highlife Ensemble, the Balkan brass band Gora Gora Orkestar. Erin also has experience writing her own music, singing in rock, folk, and free improv settings and she more recently earned a Master’s in Music Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder. In Colorado she worked for two years in public schools teaching music and moved back to KC to continue her career as musician and educator. In April Erin released her new album, “Distracted,” and has been playing live shows while also being upfront and honest about her recent cancer diagnosis where she has received multiple rounds of chemo treatments.

We just heard Distracted the title track of Erin’s debut solo album that came out this Spring. The song “Distracted” was written by Erin Keller.

Distracted was produced by Chad Meise.

After the album was released Erin was diagnosed with cancer and began treatments.

UMKC Conservatory of Music brought Erin to Kansas City, where she made friends and built collaborations with KC Civic Opera, KC Choral, New Ear, Own Cox Dance Ensemble.

Erin decided to get her Masters Degree and left KC for The University of Colorado at Boulder, and then later Denver, where she worked in public schools.

While in Colorado Erin studied Ethno musicology and sang with a High Life Ensemble, and also with the Balkan brass band Gora Gora Orkestar.

[“The Tea Leaf Prophecy (Lay Down Your Arms)” was written by Joni Mitchell and recorded for her 1988 album, Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm. Cris Williamson, a huge fan of Joni Mitchell, brought the song into the recording sessions for Cris & Holly. This album was the very first time Holly Near and Cris Williamson had recorded together after 30 years in the music business, specifically in Women’s Music. Originally undertaken to create a souvenir CD for sale at Near & Williamson’s joint concerts Originally the album was be a greatest hits package, but along the way they created several new songs and new covers with John Bucchino’s accompaniment on piano. Produced by Cris Williamson & Holly Near. Recorded at Skywalker Sound, Nicasio, CA. Cris Williamson was born in 1947 in Deadwood, South Dakota. She has released 25 studio albums, 1 reissue, 2 greatest hits collections, and 2 live albums. During a radio interview in Washington, D.C. in 1973, Williamson suggested that a record label aimed at gay women would be a good idea. The independent label Olivia Records was founded the next day. Olivia Records released Williamson’s The Changer and the Changed in 1975, which became one of the best-selling independent releases of all time. As William Ruhlmann of AllMusic writes: “The Changer and the Changed was to women’s music what Michael Jackson’s Thriller was to the music industry in general in the mid-’80s, an album that sold far beyond the perceived size of the market, more than 100,000 copies in its first year of release. Eventually, it reportedly sold more than 500,000 copies, which would make it a gold album. Williamson went on to record more than a dozen more albums with Olivia Records, then after its demise formed her own label, Wolf Moon Records. This helped to set the pace for other recording artists who found it difficult to work with the major record labels. Cris Williamson’s 25 studio album, Motherland will be released October 5, on Harvest Moon Records. Holly Near was born June 6, 1949 in Ukiah, California. She is an American singer-songwriter, actress, teacher, and activist. After starting high school in 1963, Holly Near began singing with the Freedom Singers, a folk group modeled on The Weavers. In 1968, she enrolled in the Theatre Arts program at UCLA; that year, she attended her first Vietnam War peace vigil and joined Another Mother for Peace. Holly Near’s professional career began in 1969 with a part on the television show The Mod Squad, which was followed by appearances in other shows, such as Room 222, All in the Family, and The Partridge Family. She also appeared in Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five, and Minnie and Moskowitz, and had a prominent role in the 1991 film Dogfight. In 1970, Near was a cast member of the Broadway musical Hair. Following the Kent State shootings in May of that year, the entire cast staged a silent vigil in protest. The song, “It Could Have Been Me” (which was released on A Live Album, 1974), was her heartfelt response to the shootings. In 1971, she joined the FTA (Free The Army) Tour, an anti-Vietnam War road show of music, comedy, and plays, organized by antiwar activist Fred Gardner and actors Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland. In 1972, Near founded an independent record label called Redwood Records (now defunct) to produce and promote music by “politically conscious artists from around the world”. During her long career in folk and protest music, Holly Near has worked with Ronnie Gilbert, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Meg Christian, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, and Harry Belafonte. Holly Near has been recognized many times for her work for social change, including honors from the ACLU, the National Lawyers Guild, the National Organization for Women, NARAS, Ms. Magazine (Woman of the Year), and the Legends of Women’s Music Award. Near continues an active tour schedule and has a discography of 29 albums.]

Summer first joined us on Wednesday MidDay Medley on October 2, 2013. Since then she has been touring all over, including the National Women’s Music Festival.

Mark first met Summer at the HRC Battle of the bands in 2011 where she blew away the judges & the crowd with her powerful stage presence and performance.

Summer started singing at the age of 4 when her mom, a teacher, encouraged her onto the stage. Summer Osborne lists her Mother, Carol Osborne as her biggest influence.

Summer plays guitar, and piano and keyboards, among other instruments, and has released a nine full length albums.

Summer Osborne used to work in education with middle school students.

Since deciding to focus on her musical career (performing and writing) full time in 2009, Summer has remained on tour, doing shows at venues and festivals far and wide. Summer played at National Women’s Music Festival in 2012 and 2014, and SXSW in 2012 and 2013. She has played music at Pridefests all over the Mid-West US & Canada, including: Pridefest St. Louis; Phoenix Pride – Phoenix, AZ; Fairbanks Pride – Fairbanks, AL; Tacoma Pride – Tacoma, WA; Vancouver Pride – British Columbia, Canada; Mid-MO Pride – Columbia, MO; Halifax Pride – Nova Scotia, Canada; Mid-South Pride – Memphis, TN; Springfield Pride – Springfield, MO; Kentuckiana Pride – Lexington, KY; and Metro East Pride – Belleville, IL.

[Singer songwriter Ivøry Black has played Crossroads Music Fest, The Middle of the Map Fest, The Westport Roots Fest, the KCPT Screening of “Real Boy” at The Kansas City Publlic Library, and Kauffman Stadium. Born in 1986, in Peoria Illinois, and given up for adoption at the age of four, it was difficult to find trust in people, after living with eight different foster families. Running away at 15, Ivøry moved from Indiana to Oklahoma and eventually ended up in Seattle. In 2011 Ivøry moved to Kansas City, and has became a part of new family. Ivøry is now currently in the process of writng and recording a debut full-length album, to be released in early 2018. Including a new single, “Family Tables” that will be released in August. [“She’s Got You” is a pop song written by Hank Cochran and was first recorded (in December 1961) and released (in 1962) as a single by Patsy Cline. Originally from Leuven, Belgium and now based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Globe Trotting, multi-faceted, jazz-based cellist, singer, composer and improviser Helen Gillet is a “mixed bag” of musical influence. Downbeat Magazine recently nominated her a Rising Star in the 61st Annual Critic’s Poll. She believes music to be an expression of the honest human condition; performing an eclectic mix of French pop, Avant Garde Jazz, North Indian, Folk and Classical styles.]

[The Kansas City based 4-piece band, Lovergurl caught our ear with their synth pop sound and lyrics reflecting social and political messages with hip hop and punk elements. Keyboardist and vocalist, Stephanie Bankston was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. She is a graduate of The University of Missouri. She moved abroad in her 20s, and lived in Seoul, Korea, where she played in a mostly female band called BaekMa (“White Horse”). Stephanie returned to Kansas City in the Fall 2015. Brook Worlledge, is 25 years old and is a Kansas City native. She is the band’s drummer and she sings and writes songs for the band. Brook is a defender of the proletariat. Brook’s influences range from the B52s, The Velvet Underground, The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Lovergurl guitarist and vocalist, Heather Andrews is also 25. She was born and raised in Rhode Island, and moved to Kansas City in 2011 and fell in love with the city.]

12. Herbie Hancock – “The Jungle Line (feat. Leonard Cohen)”

[A tribute album, featuring covers of songs originally written and performed by singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. It is Hancock’s 47th studio album. Hancock is a longtime friend of Mitchell’s, and both he and saxophonist Wayne Shorter, who plays throughout the album, had previously collaborated with Mitchell on her 1979 album Mingus, and both continued to work with her on occasion ever since. Guest vocalists on River include Leonard Cohen, Tina Turner, Norah Jones, Corinne Bailey Rae, Luciana Souza and Mitchell herself. In 2008 The album won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and Best Contemporary Jazz Album at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards. The Album of the Year award surprised the music world; Hancock had faced competition from major-selling artists Kanye West, Foo Fighters, Amy Winehouse, and Vince Gill. River was only the second jazz album to win Album of the Year in the award’s history, the first being Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz and João Gilberto in 1965. It peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200 after enjoying a huge post-Grammy sales boost.]

Nico is a theatre actor, performance artist, writer, and is currently a marketing and advertising consultant. Nico Gray recently performed an original piece at the Big Bang Buffet – “Black Sheep Rising” show at The Buffalo Room in April, as a benefit for 90.1 FM KKFI. Nico has also been a frequent co-host for our on-air-fund drives. Rooted in KC, Nico grew up with radio. Nico writes that, “Music has always served as the ‘passport’ through spiritual journeys that have transplanted him to the brownstones of Chicago, the rooftops of Paris, the sea-side of Marseille and the balconies of NYC. ”

15. Prince & The New Power Generation – “Willing And Able”

[13th studio album by Prince, and the first with his band The New Power Generation. . The album produced several hit singles, including “Gett Off”, “Cream”, “Money Don’t Matter 2 Night”, “Insatiable”, and the title track. Dancers Lori Werner (then dancing under the stage name of Lori Elle) and Robia LaMorte, known as “Diamond” and “Pearl” respectively, appeared on the holographic cover. Diamond and Pearl also appeared in the music videos for “Cream”, “Strollin'”, “Gett Off”, and the title track, and also participated in Prince’s Diamonds and Pearls Tour. Diamonds and Pearls contains a hybrid of music styles, from the funk of “Daddy Pop”, “Jughead”, and first single “Gett Off”, to some of the more mainstream pop/rock songs Prince had recorded in some time, such as “Cream”, “Money Don’t Matter 2 Night” and the title song. “Willing and Able” was used in a video montage during the closing credits of CBS coverage of Super Bowl XXVI.]

16. Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood – “Jackson”

[Nancy & Lee is a collaboration album by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood. It was produced in 1968 by Reprise Records. Billy Strange was responsible for the arrangements and conducting. “Jackson” is a song written in 1963 by Billy Edd Wheeler and Jerry Leiber and first recorded by Wheeler. It is best known from two 1967 releases: a pop hit single by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood, which reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and a country hit single by Johnny Cash and June Carter, which reached number two on the Billboard Country Singles chart and has become more appreciated by non-country audiences in recent years as a result of Cash’s continued popularity and its use in the 2011 film The Help. The song is about a married couple who find (according to the lyrics) that the “fire” has gone out of their relationship. The song relates the desire of both partners to travel to Jackson where they each expect to be welcomed as someone far better suited to the city’s lively night life than the other is. Actress Gaby Rodgers is cited as co-author of “Jackson”, because Leiber used his then-wife’s name as a pseudonym in writing the song with Wheeler.

[New version of Ono’s 1985 song released in honor of her 82nd birthday. “I Love You, Earth”, was originally on her 1985 album Starpeace. Proceeds from Antony & Yoko will benefit the Rain Forest Trust. Yoko Ono (born February 18, 1933) is a Japanese multimedia artist, singer, songwriter, and peace activist who is also known for her work in performance art and filmmaking.[2] She performs in both English and Japanese. She was the second wife and widow of singer-songwriter John Lennon of the Beatles.]

[3rd studio album from Atlas Sound, the musical solo project of Bradford James Cox (born May 15, 1982) an American singer-songwriter and musician, best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the indie rock band Deerhunter. Cox has described himself as gay, though he previously has stated that he leads a non-sexual/asexual lifestyle. However, in a 2011 interview with Rolling Stone, Cox said that he no longer identifies as asexual but rather as queer: “For a long time I just said I was asexual, but now I just realized that… I’m still, I guess… I mean, I’m queer. I just sort of, don’t really have a very big self-esteem, so asexuality is sort of like a comfort zone where you don’t get rejected.”Cox stated in an October 19, 2016 radio interview: “There’s so many types of sexuality, but one that I think is overlooked is to be asexual. I am absolutely asexual. I am a virgin at 34 years old.”]

[Divine’s 2nd Single and his first to chart on the Dutch Singles Chart. It debuted at #37 before climbing to and peaking at #28 in its second week. The song spent a total of 11 weeks on the chart. “Native Love (Step By Step)” remains Divine’s highest charting song on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Songs, where it peaked at #21. Harris Glenn Milstead, better known by his stage name Divine (October 19, 1945 – March 7, 1988), was an American actor, singer and drag queen. Closely associated with the independent filmmaker John Waters, Divine was a character actor, usually performing female roles in cinematic and theatrical appearances, and adopted a female drag persona for his music career.]

23. Perfume Genius – “Normal Song”

[2nd album from Perfume Genius, the stage name for Seattle-based solo artist Mike Hadreas who was born in the suburbs of Seattle, Washington. Hadreas studied painting in school and took piano lessons as a child. His mother was a special education teacher,and is now an assistant principal at a middle school. His parents divorced when he was a teenager. Growing up, Hadreas was the only openly gay student at his school, and he received death threats which were not addressed by the administration. He dropped out of high school during his senior year. Two years after dropping out, he was attacked by several young men in his neighborhood. He moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn and worked as a doorman for a club in the East Village. In 2005, Hadreas returned home to Seattle and began recording music. In 2008, Hadreas set up a MySpace page under the name Perfume Genius, and thus began his music career. Hadreas’s music explores topics including sexuality, his personal struggle with Crohn’s disease, domestic abuse, and the dangers faced by gay men in contemporary society. His newest album, No Shape was released May 5, 2017 and was produced by Blake Mills (Fiona Apple. John Legend, Alabama Shakes). The album was praised by critics. Pitchfork awarded it an 8.8 and named it “Best New Album”, deeming it “his most realized album yet, a tender and transcendental protest record of love and devotion.” The Guardian commented that “No Shape sounds like a unique talent coming into full bloom.” Hadreas will embark on a headline tour in the U.S. and Canada this spring and summer. He will also be performing at a number of the major European and British music festivals this summer.]

24. The Cure – “Halo”

[4-disc set of B-sides and rarities, JOIN THE DOTS serves as a sort of alternate history for the Cure, one of the world’s most beloved post-punk/alt-rock bands. Painstakingly compiled by Cure frontman (and the group’s only constant member) Robert Smith, DOTS provides dozens of glimpses into the literal flip-side of their singles by collecting many long-lost tracks, including the classic songs previously featured only on the cassette version of STARING AT THE SEA: THE SINGLES. Disc one begins in the late 1970s and consists of early tracks that show the Cure in a wildly adventurous mode–tearing into the punky “Pillbox Tales”, drifting through the gloomy “Descent”, and bouncing along to the oddly danceable “Throw Your Foot”. By disc two, Smith and the lads have become college-rock heroes, and despite their goth looks, they move steadily into popier territory on songs such as the synth-laden “Breathe” and the upbeat “Hey You!!!”,eventually settling into their dreamy post-DISINTEGRATION era on “This Twilight Garden”, “Halo”, and “Home” on the third and fourth discs. Prior to her solo project, Michelle Zauner fronted Post Post, an indie pop band with students from Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges, then started the Philadelphian emo band Little Big League. Zauner fronted the band between 2011 and 2014, before returning to her hometown of Eugene, Oregon in 2013. Zauner made the trek back home in the wake of her mother being diagnosed with cancer.While at home, tending her family in Oregon, Zauner began recording solo music. Zauner described the project as having much more to say following Tropical Jinx, the 2014 studio album by Little Big League. Originally, Zauner had begun to record early samples of music as a self-meditative and “instant-gratification” feeling.[3] Two years later, the solo project itself eventually became the work of Psychopomp the debut album by Japanese Breakfast. The name of the band, according to Zauner is a juxtaposition of Asian exoticism and American culture. Despite the name, Zauner is not of Japanese descent, but Korean descent.Zauner described the debut album as quite “dark and heavy-handed”, although she had a desire to make the music, urgent and “sonically upbeat.” On June 23, 2016, the Japanese Breakfast project was signed to the Dead Oceans label.]

Recently Chase finished working on the debut album from Kwame Boateng.

KD Kuro is the musical project of Kwame Boateng, a Kansas City based rapper. He was born in Arlington, Virginia, and graduated from Olathe South High School in 2008. After attending Coffeyville Community College Kwame as KD Kuro started his rap career in 2012 and has been cultivating and refining his sound over the course of the last 5 years. Kwame grew up with musical influences like N.E.R.D and Missy Elliot that helped to mold the music he creates. His debut album is called “Good/Luck” and it was just released yesterday, August 1, and was co-produced by Chase the Horseman and Nathan “Geesace” Gisecke. “Good/Luck” was years in the making and Kwame is ready for Kansas City and hopefully the world to hear what he is all about.

[Formed in 2014 in Montmartre area of Paris. Joon Moon is the meeting of House producer Julien Decoret, drummer Raphael Chassin and American expat and singer/song writer extraordinaire Krystle Warren. The Tiger EP comes after the release of 2 critically acclaimed EP’s, “Chess” and “Call Me”, and serves as another foreshadowing into their upcoming album “Moonshine Corner”, which will be released in September. After ten years of touring the world playing double bass with Marc Collin’s Nouvelle Vague ensemble, alongside excursions into house music on the Yellow Productions Art of Disco compilations, not to mention co-producing Florent Marchet’s Bamby Galaxy album, it was time for songwriter/producer/renaissance man Julien Decoret to dedicate his heart and soul to a new challenge. With Raphaël Chassin, (Hugh Coltman, Vanessa Paradis, Pauline Croze) on drums, helping out with the production and arrangements, and Sébastien Trouvé as sound engineer, Decoret set out on his retro-modern Joon Moon mission, laying out the contours of a world where trip-hop, jazz, soul and electronic music live side by side, sharing their joys and sorrows. The only missing element was that one last bit of magic, a voice that could take the project to ever-loftier heights. Enter Krystle Warren. She had worked with Rufus Wainwright, and Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside, and had made forays into house music herself by providing vocals to two cuts off Hercules and Love Affair’s, The Feast of the Broken Heart. That’s not even mentioning her own band, Krystle Warren and The Faculty – and its three albums – which display her impressive grasp of soul music, folk, blues…With Tiger, the band’s social concerns are brought to the forefront. A timely piece from a Franco-American band about the need to question authority and the power structure of society. Tiger sees its tension build up like an ominmous populist, and turns into defiance. Art and love combining in a movement towards emancipation.]

[Written by Cody Critcheloe, produced by J. Ashley Miller. SSION was formed in 1996, in Kansas City, by multi-talented vocalist, visual artist, musician, performance artist, music video director, Cody Critcheloe. SSION, have been known for their extravagant live shows and amazingly creative videos. SSION has toured with Gossip, Fischerspooner, CSS, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Cody Critcheloe has created and directed music videos for: Perfume Genius, Katy Perry, Santigold, CSS, Peaches, Gossip, and Tilly and the Wall.]

10:30 – Interview with Jen Appell

Jen Appell joins us to share music and details about her show “Arc of Joan.” In the wake of 9/11, Jen Appell co-created the original rock musical Joan the Maid (now performed as Arc of Joan). Informed by the political and social climate, the production envisioned what Joan of Arc’s life would have looked like under the microscope of modern media, reality television and the national obsession with cult of personality. In this re-envisioned workshop/production of the song cycle enhanced with slick video elements, Jen Appell and The Saints perform a minimalistic version of the musical to examine the heroine’s path of discovery, power, loss and acceptance.

Jen Appell on the July 26, 2017 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley on KKFI 90.1 FM.

Jen hosts and curates The Uptown Sirens Collective at Davey’s Uptown Rambler’s Club. The Uptown Sirens Collective features acts fronted and driven by women who write and perform original music. The Uptown Sirens Collective is currently on hiatus with performances resuming in September. The Uptown Sirens Collective occurs on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 3402 Main Street in Kansas City.

Jen is project manager and co-collaborator for Redlined, a creative interpretation of the HEAT report for Community Health Council of Wyandotte County.

While working on Redlined, Jen discovered the rich history of the Quindaro neighborhood in Wyandotte County, KS. Jen is currently working with Justin Border, Meghan Rowswell and Jillian Youngbird on Weaving the River, an immersive art installation that sheds light on the often untold story of this fascinating community.

Willi Carlisle is an “Ozark renaissance folklorist” who writes “brilliant, slice of life Americana.” (Sing Out!Magazine) A theatre artist, folksinger, poet, and square-dance caller, Willi received a BA from Knox College in Creative Writing and Performance Studies, and an MFA in Poetry at the University of Arkansas. His work has appeared in The Journal of American Folklore, The Midwest Review, and elsewhere. Willi is a co-leader of the Fayetteville Old-time Music and Dance Society and a company member with the Artist’s Laboratory Theater. Joseph Fletcher is a director, producer, and stage manager. Past directing credits include Purim-Schmitz, China the Whole Enchilada (NYC), The New Now, Las Posadas, Alley 38, War of the Worlds, The Plowman, Candide, and The Sunshine Boys (Regional). In various capacities he has worked with the Walnut Street Theatre, Cirque Du Soleil, the National Tour of Chicago the Musical, The Signature Theatre, Prospect Theatre Company, Target Margin Theatre, Hippodrome State Theater, and Orlando Shakespeare Theatre and Orlando Opera. He is a founding member and artistic producer for the Artist’s Laboratory Theatre a nonprofit community based devised theatre company in Fayetteville, AR. He has a BFA in Theatre from University of Central Florida.

Joesph Fletcher, thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

During his last performance, a dying folksinger faces the life he has led, the legacy he will leave behind, and death itself with five instruments, square-dance calls, and enough dirty jokes to make a beaver blush. The medication-addled musician relives lost love, his experience of the Vietnam War, years of political activism, and adventures into the American wilderness in this haunting, heartfelt hootenanny. The Orlando weekly describes it as “A poetic celebration of America’s original art form that is simultaneously ancient and avant-garde.”

Developed in a collaboration with award-winning “Ozark renaissance folklorist” Willi Carlisle and director Joseph Fletcher, the play is the product of five years of research, down-home poetry, field recordings, music-mentorship, and folklore amidst the misty mountains of the Arkansas Ozarks.

21. Val Bennett – “The Russians Are Coming”

[From 1968, a cover of “Take Five” by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, which would later go on to be used as the theme tune to the British television series The Secret Life of Machines in the late-1980s. Val Bennett was born Lovall Bennett. His birthdate is unknown. He died in 1991. Val Bennett was a Jamaican tenor saxophonist and jazz and roots reggae musician who began his career in the 1940s. He made a number of releases on the Island Records and Crab Records labels. In the late 1940s, Bennett led his own band, the Val Bennett Orchestra. Artists that played in Bennett’s band included Jah Jerry Haynes, Lloyd Knibb, and Ernest Ranglin, whose first professional experience was with this band. The Val Bennett Orchestra performed regularly at the Colony Club, performing mainly for foreign visitors to Jamaica. The band also toured abroad, performing in countries including Haiti, where they picked up merengue and played it on their return to Jamaica. In the early to mid-1960s, Bennett was a regular member of Prince Buster’s band, playing on many of the singer’s best-known recordings, including “Al Capone”. Bennett was also a regular studio session musician, appearing on many releases from artists including Theophilus Beckford, Pat Kelly, Barrington Levy, and Delroy Wilson. Bennett’s session work included saxophone, horn, and trombone. In the late 1960s, Bennett joined Bunny Lee’s “All Stars”. Notable tracks by Bennett include “The Russians Are Coming” and “Tons Of Gold” (1970), with the Harry J Allstars, a version of their track “The Liquidator”. Bennett also worked for producer Lee “Scratch” Perry, and his spaghetti western-inspired “Return of Django”, recorded with Perry’s studio band The Upsetters was a major UK hit in 1969. His track “Baby Baby” was also included on The Upsetters’ album Eastwood Rides Again. Perry was the only producer to get Bennett to perform vocals, “Baby Baby” being one of these examples, the other being “Barbara”.]

[Sleep Well Beast is the upcoming seventh studio album by The National, an American indie rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio, formed in 1999. Currently based in Brooklyn, the band consists of Matt Berninger (vocals), Aaron Dessner (guitar, keyboards), Bryce Dessner (guitar), Scott Devendorf (bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums). Founded by Berninger, Aaron Dessner, and Scott and Bryan Devendorf, The National released their self-titled debut album, The National (2001), on Brassland Records, an independent record label founded by Dessner and his twin brother, Bryce Dessner. Bryce, who had assisted in recording the album, soon joined the band, participating as a full member in the recording of its follow-up, Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers (2003). Leaving behind their day jobs, the National signed with Beggars Banquet Records and released their third studio album, Alligator (2005), to widespread critical acclaim. Kansas City based playwright, Cynthia Hardeman joins us to share details about her new play, Sun Of The Revolution, co-written with hip hop artist Storm, for this year’s KC Fringe Festival, with performances running July 21 through July 29 at Phosphor Studio in Kansas City. This play explores the generational gap between today’s style of hip hop in comparisons to the Golden Era. When a young man disturbs an older gentleman’s peace on a train ride, a battle of will and wit ensues.

Cynthia Hardeman currently serves as Playwright and Program Director for Drama Time (Children’s Theatre Program) at Just Off Broadway Theatre. She is a Parent Aide and Family Support Specialist with MO Div. of Family Services. And, Cynthia is an avid supporter and volunteer for KC MeltingPot Theatre.

Freddie Freshman is a 2017 graduate of Paseo Academy of Performing Arts. He is also a hip hop artist, new on the scene in KC. He’s has also been cast in the play “Grapes Vine” to be presented in August, at Just Off Broadway Theatre.

Writers:

Cynthia Hardeman has written over 20 plays and has had 7 of them produced. She worked in the Air Force for over 8 years, and later served as Broadcast Designer for KSHB TV. After graduating from UMKC Cynthia jumped head first into being a playwright. She is currently working on a new play called, “Truth Stands” a collaboration with dancer James Clark.

Storm is a Kansas City based MC, poet, and writer. Born Laneshia Shanay Neely, Storm graduated from Lee’s Summit Senior High and graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree from Metropolitan Missouri Community College. She stands 5’ 3” and weighs 120 pounds, but has a giant stage presence and voice when she grabs the mic. In a male dominated field, she commands respect. She lists her inspirations as: KRS-One to Queen Latifah. Since 2010 Storm has worked with the collaborative production company, NUWAYV Order with Khajewel, A.N.T.H.E.M., and Eveready.

The band has performed as a trio, including singer, guitarist and songwriter Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie, and four drummers: Victor DeLorenzo (1980–1993, 2002–2009 and 2013), Guy Hoffman (1993–2002), Brian Viglione (2013–2016), and John Sparrow (2016-present). Violent Femmes have released 9 studio albums and 15 singles during the course of their career. The band found immediate success with the release of their self-titled debut album in early 1983. Violent Femmes became the band’s biggest-selling album and was eventually certified platinum.Violent Femmes went on to become one of the most successful alt rock bands of the 1980s, selling over 9 million albums by 2005.]

Steve Gardels is a member of the band The Philistines, where he plays drums and contributes his design talents to the band’s promotional art. Steve also plays bass for The Uncouth. Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Steve studied Digital Filmmaking and Photography/New Media at the Kansas City Art Institute, where he now currently works in the Media Center. Steve has also played in the bands Appropriate Grammar, and Panic Addicts. Steve has collaborated as a musician, designer, video & filmmaker with many arts and theatre groups in Kansas City.

[The band included: Knapp on drums & backing vocals, Cody Blanchard on rhythm guitar & vocals, CJ Wilson on lead guitar & front vocals, and Jason Schelp on bass & backing vocals. King City Thieves formed after vocalist and lead guitarist CJ Wilson collaborated on a project in late 2006 with bassist Dave Blank. CJ and Dave immediately found themselves on the same page musically and quickly became friends, but, as tensions and creative differences grew, that band soon ran it’s course. CJ and Dave decided to continue on with a new band and were joined a flashy, energetic drummer by the name of Boogie. In late 2008, King City Thieves were born. In a relaxed upper floor on US Highway 69, King City Thieves were busy writing an undeniable tapestry of punk rock n’ roll. After perfecting a sets worth of material, King City Thieves decided to call on long time friend of everyone in the band Chris Masochist to step in on rhythm guitar and vocals to make the sound fuller and well, louder. In the summer of 2009, King City Thieves recorded their debut EP titled “Whirlwind EP” that has sparked a fire in the punk rock and rock n’ roll community in the greater Kansas City area and even garnered some attention overseas. Unfortunately, Boogie had to part ways with the band though they all still remain great friends and supporters of each other. Knapp, another long time friend of the band came in and took up the drummer position and thickening up the backing vocals. Since the full lineup’s conception, King City Thieves have played in and drew crowds in all of Kansas City’s premier bars, clubs, hotspots, and basements. King City Thieves are a rowdy and resilient group of musicians that no matter what have each others backs and have established rock hard common ground musically. ]

18. Hopeless Destroyers – “Both Feet”

[A KC Punk band that managed to make it through 10 years of lineup changes and hardship. Defined by their breakneck chord changes and singer Josh Betterton’s rapid vocal delivery, Hopeless Destroyers hit you with intense songs about life, love, loss and kicking vampires in the nuts. Once described as “[…] bar punk with a lot of ‘woahs’, but better than a lot of that other bullshit” by Maximum Rock N Roll Magazine.] “Both Feet” is from an unfinished LP. The track was recovered from a session with Duane Trower at Weights and Measures Soundlabs in KCMO. On this recording: Josh Betterton on vocals; Smiley on backup vocals and lead guitar; Matt Klein on backup vocals & guitar; Brittain Lawless on bass; and Kriss Ward on drums. Editor’s note: The Destroyers were Steve Gardels first punk show in KC and I was their final drummer. Guitarist Matt Klein and vocalist Josh Betterton both passed away due to complications from drug addiction. They are greatly missed.)

[Cosmic Rock from the plains. Parker Mays on bass guitar and vocals; Matthew Ray on guitar; Luke Pierce on organ and keyboards; Taylor McClure on drums. Stone Grower does its homework. This band has managed to condense their favorite parts of psych rock into tight compositions that feature every players’ unique ability while serving the song itself. Sabbath, Sleep, 13th Floor Elevators and Yes [but in a good way] come to mind. Though they pull from the greats, Stone Grower keeps things fresh as they worship the riffs they summon. Big drums, loads of guitar, a thunderous low end and the tasteful layering of keyboards expands their sound and brings something new to the potentially jaded psych listener.]
