2. (5.) Lizzy Mercier Descloux – “Fire”
from: Press Color / Light in The Attic Records / 2015 (1979 Ze Records)
[Debut album of French no wave singer, Lizzy Mercier Descloux. Although largely forgotten the album has received some critical acclaim, being called “the real thing” by Uncut magazine. Martine-Elisabeth “Lizzy” Mercier Descloux was born December 16, 1956 and died April 29, 2004. She was a French musician, singer-songwriter, composer, actress, writer and painter. Mercier Descloux grew up in Lyon, France, but returned to her native Paris in her teens to attend art school. With her partner, Michel Esteban, she helped establish the store Harry Cover, temple of the punk movement in France, and the new wave magazine Rock News. She struck up friendships with Patti Smith and Richard Hell when visiting New York in 1975, and both contributed material to her first book, Desiderata. She and Esteban moved to New York in 1977, meeting Michael Zilkha, with whom Esteban formed Ze Records.]

3. (4.) Death And Vanilla – “Follow the Light”
from: To Where the Wild Things Are / Fire Records / May 4, 2015
[Experimental-psychedelic-dream-pop trio formed in Malmö, Sweden, by Marleen Nilsson and Anders Hansson. Death and Vanilla utilise vintage musical equipment such as vibraphone, organ, mellotron, tremolo guitar and moog, to emulate the sounds of 60s/70s soundtracks, library music, German Krautrock, French Ye-ye pop and 60s psych. They revel in the warmth of older analogue instruments to create a more organic sound, each loose wire and off-kilter noise adding to the rich atmosphere. The band recorded the new album themselves in their rehearsal space, using just one microphone – a 70’s Sennheiser – which they bought at a flea market for a tenner. It is this unconventional recording process that gives Death and Vanilla their unique personality; using a trial and error approach to recording has rewarded the album with a strangeness that would not have otherwise been achievable.]

4. (3.) Stanislas Tohon – “Dja, Dja, Dja”
from: Dans le Tchink Système / Hot Casa Records / December 12, 2014
[From Hot Casa Records: Afro-Soul holy grail by the “Soul Brother From Benin“, featuring the famous “Vis à Vis” band from Ghana and recorded in Kumasi in 1979. Stanislas Tohon aka Papy Grande was born in the “ Country of the kings ” (Benin), in Abomey 1955. He’s “Chevalier de la legion d’honneur” in Benin for his brilliant musical career. The famous soul singer from Cotonou started his musical career at the age of 9 , played with the greatest such as Gnonnas Pedro and recorded almost 35 albums. Influenced by the traditional “Tchingoume “ music , he invented his own rhythm called “Tchink Système”, a mix of soul and Beninese traditional rhythm . “Dans le Tchink Système” is a four track album recorded in Ghana on 24 analog tracks channel with the incredible “Vis à Vis Band”, included a rare version of his first 7 inch “Africa “ that he recorded a year before with “Les Satelites” from Cotonou. Sang in Fon, his native language from Benin, this album is a soulful call for peace and unity in Africa, a real definition of Afro Soul music ! This extremely scarce and obscure record is now remastered and stricltly limited to 1000 copies.]

5.(2.) Darondo – “Luscious Lady”
from: Listen To My Song: The Music City Sessions / Big Beat Records / 2015
[10-track LP on brown translucent vinyl, limited to 1200 copies and features Darondo’s most well-known songs, “Didn’t I” and “Listen To My Song” and previously unissued songs from the 1973-74 sessions. William Daron Pulliam (October 5, 1946 – June 9, 2013), who performed in the 1970s under the name Darondo, was a funk and soul singer from the San Francisco Bay Area. Although he is not widely recognized today, serious enthusiasts of the soul genre consistently rate him in high regard. The mythology surrounding Darondo describes him as a pimp, although he has denied this claim. His performing name is said to have originated as a compliment from a waitress who was fond of his generous tipping habits. Darondo has received more attention in recent years thanks to London DJ Gilles Peterson playing his 1973 single, “Didn’t I” on his BBC Radio 1 program. Recordings of Darondo are available from Luv N Haight, an imprint label of Ubiquity Records. Other works can be purchased from Omnivore Recordings. He also hosted a public broadcasting music video program where he did comedy skits and gave love advice in a segment called “Penthouse Letters” which can be found on YouTube. He died of heart failure in 2013.]

6. (1.) Television – “Little Johnny Jewel”
from: Ork Records: New York, New York / Numero Group / October 30, 2015
[Television was formed in NYC in 1973 and considered influential in the development of punk and alternative music. Television was an early fixture of CBGB and the 1970s New York rock scene. Although they recorded in a stripped-down, guitar-based manner similar to their punk contemporaries, the band’s music was by comparison clean, improvisational, and technically proficient, drawing influence from avant-garde jazz and 1960s rock. The group’s debut album, Marquee Moon, is often considered one of the defining releases of the punk era. Television’s roots can be traced to the teenage friendship between Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell. The duo met at Sanford School in Hockessin, Delaware, from which they ran away. Both moved to New York, separately, in the early 1970s, aspiring to be poets. Their first group together was the Neon Boys, consisting of Verlaine on guitar and vocals, Hell on bass and vocals and Billy Ficca on drums. The group lasted from late 1972 to late 1973. In late 1973 the group reformed, calling themselves Television and recruiting Richard Lloyd as a second guitarist. Their first gig was at the Townhouse Theatre, on March 2, 1974. Their manager, Terry Ork, persuaded CBGB owner Hilly Kristal to give the band a regular gig at his club, where they reportedly constructed their first stage. After playing several gigs at CBGB in early 1974, they played at Max’s Kansas City and other clubs, returning to CBGB in January 1975, where they established a significant cult following. Television made their vinyl debut in 1975 with “Little Johnny Jewel” (Parts One and Two), a 7-inch single on the independent label Ork Records, owned by their manager, Terry Ork. William Terry Ork was an American band manager and record producer for the new wave/punk music scene in New York City in the mid 1970s. Ork is associated with the success of the club CBGB as manager for punk band Television and musician Richard Hell. Ork arrived in New York City in 1968 to help Andy Warhol with Warhol’s movies. While working as the manager of a film bookstore called Cinemabilia, Ork met Billy Ficca, Tom Verlaine and Hell of the Neon Boys and introduced them to Richard Lloyd. Ork began managing the new band when they reformed as Television. In 1975, he founded Ork Records which released Television’s Little Johnny Jewel (1975), Richard Hell’s Blank Generation, The Marbles’ Red Light (1979) and Mick Farren’s Lost Johnny, among other recordings. Farren said, “Terry Ork was an idealist, as true to the punk ethic as you could be, which means that when it all started getting slick, and the bands were getting deals, Terry was left behind.” He died in San Diego on October 20, 2004. In the 2013 film CBGB, Ork was portrayed by Johnny Galecki.]

from: Glitter / Bell Records / March 3, 1972

On Thursday, September 17, at The Kansas City Chiefs, “home opener” against the Denver Broncos, for the first time in a long long long time, the crowd heard something different when the team scored a touchdown. Instead of Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll Part 2.”

Chiefs management finally decided to go with something new, and part of that included a contest where fans voted on three different songs. On September 16, the team announced via Twitter that David George & A Crooked Mile’s “Hey, Kansas City!” had been selected as the new Chiefs touchdown song.

“Much of the feedback we received from Chiefs fans was that they wanted to retain the feeling and intimidation factor that comes when 75,000-plus fans chant in unison,” Chiefs president Mark Donovan said. “Because the fan chant is not part of the Gary Glitter song and was added by Chiefs fans, we asked David George to incorporate that element in the beat of the new song. We think this addition to the new touchdown song will deliver that traditional aspect of Arrowhead touchdowns that our fans love.”

10:05 – Interview with Madisen Ward and Ruth Ward

We we’re thrilled to welcome back to the show, for their 5th appearance on Wednesday MidDay Medley, Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear. In the past 14 months they have garnered national acclaimed after an appearance at the 2014 Americana Music Fest, they signed with Glassnote Records and recorded their debut full length album in Nashville with acclaimed producer Jim Abbiss, they released their first single, “Silent Movies,” the same night they performed the song on The Late Show with David Letterman on CBS Television. They launched a big tour across the United States and traveled to Europe for multiple shows in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, and ten did it all again. They sang and played on the influential British television show, “Later With Jools Holland” They were featured on CBS Sunday Morning, and visited many radio stations. They performed on tour with Sufjan Stevens, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, played Bonnaroo, Pilgramage, and the Newport Folk Festival, and many many others. In 2015 they have been representing Kansas City all over the world, and are back home for a few days, and join us to talk about their favorite holiday recipes, meeting Robert Plant, and their upcoming appearance on NBC Television’s Today Show, on Monday, November 23, and their shows through December that end their year performing back at at the Ryman Theatre, in Nashville, on December 30th and 31st.

“Silent Movies” was the first single off their debut album, SKELETON CREW. We all watched as Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear played this song on the CBS Television program, The Late Show With David Letterman. Ruth talked about she liked to wear colorful socks and that night all of her friends were wearing their colorful socks in support. She spoke about how they felt that all of Kansas City was pulling for them.

KC fans were all taking pictures of their televisions, myself included. It was emotional. Like when the Royals won the World Series!

We talked with Madisen and Ruth about a documentary short film showing their rise as a band, and in the film Ruth talks about how there was a time when she thought perhaps she would wake up a it would all be a dream.

Glassnote Entertainment Group LLC is a record label that was launched by music executive, Daniel Glass, in 2007. The label primarily has a lineup of indie rock and alternative rock artists: Mumford & Sons, Phoenix and has also has released music from Childish Gambino and Secondhand Serenade. Madisen and Ruth talked about how Daniel Glass flew to Kansas City to meet them, where they had a lunch and performance at The Midland Theatre to let Daniel Glass see them perform live. Then at the end of the business day, Daniel Glass flew back home.

Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear recorded “Skeleton Crew” in Nashville at Oceanway Studios and Sound Kitchen Studios, working with British music producer, Jim Abbiss, known for his work on records with Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Sneaker Pimps, and both of Adele’s albums 19 and 21. Through the process they attempted to work on an individual song each day. Ruth was impressed that Jim Abbiss was so collaborative and listened to Madisen’s ideas, and didn’t try to make the sound like another band, but allowed them to be authentic to who they are as people and artists. When Jim came to Kansas City to meet with them, after the meeting he went out to see a movie with Madisen

Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear have been touring a lot, and as unofficial ambassadors of the entire Kansas City Area, we wanted to know what are people’s perceptions of Kansas City from other parts of the country and from across the Atlantic? Madisen and Ruth mentioned that almost everywhere they go there is someone from Kansas City. That there was generally goodwill toward them and KC, and many folks were interested in the KC Royals chase for the crown.

We talked with Madisen and Ruth about how they’ve added a rhythm section with Tom Hudson on drums, and Brent Kastler on bass.

Madison and Ruth also talked about David “DJ” Lee who is their Tour Manager, and has had a lifetime of experience touring with bands, and with his own band, Scratch Track.

We talked with Madisen and Ruth about Kenneth Ward, (Madisen’s father, Ruth’s husband) and how as things transition from his employment, he will be able to join then more on the road.

At Bonnaroo they met Robert Plant, through their touring they’ve met David Beckham, Liv Tyler, James Taylor, and many others. We asked them what has been their most exciting “brush with celebrity” meeting? Ruth said for her it was meeting Janis Ian, who contacted Ruth and the two went for lunch. Janis Ian was an early influence on Ruth as a musician and singer-songwriter.

This fall Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear played in support of Sufjan Stevens for shows in the UK, Ireland and Paris. Madison had posted on facebook that he and Ruth had met incredible people during those shows and Madisen talked about meeting Sufjan and complimenting his latest release “Carrie & Lowell.”

10:36 – Interview with Andrew Foshee with Brian James & Phil Spencer

Kansas City based singer-songwriter, Andrew Foshee joined us to play live in our 90.1 FM Studios. Andrew Foshee’s 2013 release, “Headphones Required” was one of Wednesday MidDay Medley’s “113 Best Recordings of 2013.” Andrew Foshee is currently working on a new record with Joel Nanos at Element Recording. Andrew Foshee and his Gosh Darn Band play The Tank Room, 1813 Grand BLVD, on December 5, at 9:00 pm opening for The Grisly Hand.

Andrew is currently playing live as a trio under the ‘Gosh Darn Band’ that consists of Andrew on guitar and vocals, Brian James on bass and harmonies, and Phil Spencer on drums.

Andrew Foshee is a singer/songwriter based out of Kansas City, MO. He describes his music as, “An unholy union between 70’s crooner folk, post-modern country and psychedelic blues-rock.”

Andrew admits that this description is a bit tongue-in-cheek, as are most of his lyrics.
Andrew wrote,”You could very well just call it ‘pop music’, however this EP certainly falls within the vein of ‘alt-country’ or simply ‘country music’, which stylistically is how I’ve always kind of imagined both my songs and vocal timbre.”

10:40

5. Andrew Foshee – “Fishing” (LIVE)
[Andrew on guitar and vocals, Brian James on harmonies]

Andrew wrote: “Over the last year I’ve made a conscious decision to really open things up lyrically and start saying, in a more direct way, what’s on my mind, instead of always worrying if it’s ‘poetic’ or if it rhymes. Sometimes I’m lucky though and I achieve both. I am somewhat of a crass, honest, and eternally sarcastic person, so this all bleeds into my most current writings. Three dominating themes that continue to surface are Women, Drugs & Philosophy, so I’m currently flirting with that as an album title.”

The ‘Gosh Darn Band’ is: Andrew on guitar and vocals, Brian James on bass and harmonies, and Phil Spencer on drums. Mike Stover and Dan Loftus from The Grisly Hand played lap-steel and keys respectively on the EP, and they’re adding some fiddle at the next recording session.

Andrew told us he’d really like to find a lead guitar player to join the band. Know any?

10:51

6. Andrew Foshee – “Cheese & Rice” aka “Jesus Christ, When Did I Become Such a Loser” (LIVE)
[Andrew on guitar and vocals, Brian James on harmonies]

Right now Andrew is currently recording a 5-song ‘Debut EP’ with Joel Nanos at Element Recording.

Andrew wrote, ”I call it a ‘Debut EP’ for various reasons, one being that this will be my first project working in a real studio with other musicians and ‘letting go’. The EP should be done by mid-December with a release date in early 2016. And then it’s back to the studio to record more songs for the full album I have envisioned, unless I run out of money and am forced to live in my van.”

5. Pieta Brown – “Mercury”
from: Mercury / Red House / September 27, 2011

[Pieta Brown plays Knuckleheads, on Friday, November 20, with Iris DeMent]

11:15 – Interview with Iris DeMent

In his review for WHYY’s Fresh Air, Entertainment Weekly Music Editor – Ken Tucker wrote: “Iris DeMent possesses one of the great voices in contemporary popular music: powerfully, ringingly clear, capable of both heartbreaking fragility and blow-your-ears-back power. Had she been making country albums in the ’70s and ’80s and had more commercial ambition, she’d probably now be considered right up there with Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Instead, she’s lived a contemporary life, a somewhat private life. As she recently told an interviewer, “There’s a lot that goes into life besides songwriting.”

Iris DeMent released her debut album “Infamous Angel” in 1992, on Warner Brothers records, a collection of instant classic songs including “Let The Mystery Be.” These were songs she first wrote and performed in coffeehouses and small clubs here in Kansas City, along with other up and coming singer songwriters: Howard Iceberg and Scott Hrabko. Since then Iris has released six full length recordings, was nominated for a Grammy twice, has had her songs used in multiple films and television shows, appeared as an actress in the film, Song Catcher, appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, Latenight with Conan O’Brien, toured all over the world, has been a frequent contributor to Prairie Home Companion, collaborated on recorded with John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Nancy Griffith, Steve Earle, and so many others.

On November 21, 2002, Iris married acclaimed singer-songwriter Greg Brown, in a private ceremony in the office of Rev. Sam Mann of St. Mark Church in Kansas City.

After living in both Iowa and Kansas City, Iris ended up moving to Iowa.

In the liner notes for Iris DeMent’s new album, “The Trackless Woods” Iris writes about how she and husband Greg Brown brought their daughter to the United States from Siberia in 2005, when she was just shy of 6 years old.

“The Trackless Woods” is a collection of 18 new song where Iris has set to music, poems by acclaimed 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova.

Iris DeMent returns to Kansas City, to play Knuckleheads, on Friday, November 20, with Pieta Brown.

9. Iris DeMent – “Listening To Singing”
from: The Trackless Woods / FlariElla / August 7, 2015
[6th studio album from Grammy nominated Iris DeMent who NPR said was considered ”one of the great voices in contemporary popular music.” The Trackless Woods sets 18 poems by acclaimed 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova to life. Hailed as one of Russia’s finest poets, Akhmatova survived the Bolshevik Revolution, both World Wars and Stalin. She lost family, friends and fellow writers to political killings and labor in the gulags. When Iris randomly stumbled upon Akhmatova’s work in a book of poetry a friend sent as a gift, she was immediately taken by the sorrow and burden of the poems, juxtaposed with Akhmatova’s lightness and transcendence in the face of inhumanity. ”Anna’s gift of song is so strong, about alI I had to do was get really quiet and listen,” says Iris. After reading that first poem the melodies began pouring out of her, and before she even fully understood what was driving her, Iris was gathering musicians and friends, including co-producer Richard Bennett (Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Steve Earle), to record ‘The Trackless Woods’ in her living room over a five-day period. The result is a breathtaking pairing of piano and voice in Iris’ style with timeless melodies that are deeply rooted in the American South. The project also fulfilled a long yearned-for desire to connect with her adopted daughter’s culture and history. Iris and her husband Greg Brown adopted their daughter from Siberia in 2005, when she was 6, and she says ”I’d never have made this record were it not for her.’]

13. Laurie Anderson – “Lola Goes Blind”
from: Heart of a Dog / Nonesuch / October 23, 2015
[The complete soundtrack recording of Laurie Anderson’s newest film, Heart of a Dog. Anderson was recently commissioned by the European TV network Arte to create a feature film — her first in 30 years. Her response was a personal essay entitled Heart of a Dog, a work encompassing joy and heartbreak and remembering and forgetting, at the heart of which is a lament for her late beloved piano-playing and finger-painting dog Lolabelle. Scenes range from realistic footage from the animal’s life to imagined scenes of Lolabelle’s passage through the bardo. It also includes other reflections on life and death including Anderson’s experiences in life in downtown New York after 9/11. The Nonesuch album is the full audio recording of the film, including all music and spoken text. Heart of a Dog has been shown at the Telluride, Venice, and Toronto Film Festivals to critical praise, with the New York Times calling it a “philosophically astute, emotionally charged meditation on death, love, art and dogs.” The movie will be screened at the New York Film Festival on October 8, before opening theatrically at New York’s Film Forum October 21. It also will be shown on HBO in early 2016. ]

11:30 – Interview with Jerry Harrington

Jerry Harrington is the man behind the local treasure known as The Tivoli Theatres, established in 1983 as Kansas City’s original, art house, bringing audiences the best in independent cinema, now at 4050 Pennsylvania, KCMO. Jerry Harrington joined us on Wednesday MidDay Medley to talk about the critically acclaimed new film, written, directed, produced and scored, by Laurie Anderson, HEART OF A DOG opens at The Tivoli Theatres on Friday, November 13. More information at: http://www.tivolikc.com

Laurie Anderson was our guest for a live interview on Wednesday MidDay Medley on October 5, 2011, prior to her October 9, 2011, performance at The Kauffman Center For The Performing Arts. In that show she performed “In The Air” one of the stories featured in HEART OF A DOG that deals with her beloved rat terrier, Lolabelle. The story related to hawks flying from the sky, attempting to take Lolabelle as prey, but in this story it is clear that Laurie Anderson is exploring several themes, including the event of 9-11 in New York City with the Twin Towers coming down, and our post 911 world. This beautiful film is not just about Laurie’s dog Lolabelle.

Lolabelle, dogs, death, family, mother, government surveillance,

68 year old Laurie Anderson is know as a pioneer in electronic music, and in multimedia performance art, however show began he career as a film maker.

In 2010 Laurie Anderson released her First studio recording in over 10 years Homeland on Nonesuch Records. Most of the songs had been road tested over the past two years while on tour. Co-Produced by Roma Baran and husband Lou Reed who plays electric guitar on a few songs.

When we lost Lou Reed on October 27, 2013, his wife Laurie Anderson, wrote eloquently about the final moments of Lou’s life. One of the things many of us learned, if we hadn’t already, was that Laurie and Lou were/are practicing buddhists. HEART OF A DOG deals with many elements of buddhism including “the bardo” where after death according to the Tibethan Book of The Dead, all creatures spend 49 day in the bardo, which is not really a place but rather a process.

“Acclaimed musician & performance artist Laurie Anderson presents her meditation on love and death in this playful, lucid and heartbreaking nonfiction feature dedicated to Anderson’s late husband Lou Reed. Anderson draws upon her childhood experiences, Buddhist principles and her political beliefs as she lovingly tries to help her beloved terrier Lolabelle.”

We are playing selected tracks from the complete soundtrack recording of HEART OF A DOG available from Nonesuch Records.

The Tivoli and Records With Merritt, 1614 Westport Road, are teaming up to give one lucky Laurie Anderson fan the opportunity to win an autographed film poster of HEART OF A DOG.

The Tivoli Theatres, Kansas City’s original, art house, bringing audiences the best in independent cinema, at 4050 Pennsylvania, KCMO, as been simulcasting live broadcasts, and presenting films about Art Museums and Art Exhibits, as well as special Opera performances, concerts, and plays.

The Tivoli is also the home of several film festivals, including Out Here Now – The Kansas City Lesbian & Gay Film Festival.
