7. Thom Hoskins – “Still Feeling Bronze”

Thom Hoskins has been a fixture in the Kansas City music scene for 10 years. He is the former lead singer and guitarist for The Buffalo Saints and Black Pool Lights. As a solo artist Thom played Ink’s Middle of The Map Fest in April and this year he released his new EP, “Still Feeling Bronze.” Thom joined us to talk about his music and perform LIVE in our 90.1 FM Studios.

Thom Hoskins started playing & writing music with his brothers, when he was 13. Piano, organ, guitar, bass, drums were some of the first instruments Hoskins picked up.

In 2005 the band Buffalo Saints in which Hoskins was the primary singer and songwriter released their first and only record the (Walking the dead E.P.) It took over a year to record and release, after a short tour and no label the band decided to go their separate ways.

Thom met Chris Tolle of The Belles. Both songwriters were reciprocal in helping the other perform and at one time both musician’s were a member of the other’s band.

After having met Chris, Hoskins was introduced to Jim Suptic guitarist of The Get Up Kids. The Get Up Kids had just broken up and Suptic’s new band Blackpool Lights were without a lead guitar player and were looking to tour on there new record. Hoskins obliged.

After a summer of touring with Blackpool Lights Hoskins called it quits wanting to focus on his own music career.

After losing his father no more than a couple of years before joining Blackpool lights and meeting his future wife in addition to having two children Hoskins has been through some major life changes, which could be felt by listening to his new release, “Still Feeling Bronze.”

Hoskins is due to release another record this year, a split E.P. with songwriter Doby Watson.

On Tuesday, July 10, 2012, 90.1 FM’s Wednesday MidDay Medley presents, “A Story in A Song,” a signature piece of the radio show, presented LIVE onstage at the recordBar as a benefit for KKFI, Kansas City Community Radio.

At 7:00 Tiny Horse (Abigail Henderson & Chris Meck), start things off with their amazing songs and performance.

At 7:30, The Ukulele Fight Club, (Maria Vaquez Boyd, Joe Frogge, Patrick Fedo, Kim Rausch McLaws, Kent Turpin, Ruth Noland, and Don Hall) takes the stage to perform.

At 8:00 we present, “A Story in A Song,” with original stories from: David Wayne Reed, Meghan Whelan, Lisa Cordes, Sarah Beth Mundy, Maria Vasquez Boyd, Mark Manning, and Natasha Derakhshanian. These KC based writers each share a story, about a song, that changed their life in some significant way, and then we’ll hear the song…performed LIVE

The songs will be interpreted by members of the Dead Voices band: Mike Stover, Jason Beers, Marco Pascolini, & Matt Richey, with Abigail Henderson & Chris Meck of Tiny Horse, and Betse Ellis of The Wilders. This incredible collective of some of Kansas City very best musicians will give their interpretation of songs from: Velvet Underground, The Kinks, Regina Spector, David Bowie, The Carpenters, The Beatles, and Harry Chapin.

At 10:00, we’ll shake our asses with a Post “Story” Dance Party! featuring three of Kansas City’s best party bands: Molly Picture Club at 10:00, The B’Dinas at 11:00, and Red Kate at 12:00.

Tickets are only $10.00, at the door and are good for both the early show and the late show. Proceeds from the door benefit 90.1 FM KKFI, Kansas City Community Radio. The recordBar is located at 1020 Westport Rd.

Wednesday MidDay Medley airs every Wednesday, 10 to Noon, on 90.1 FM. The show is hosted and produced by Mark Manning, and features new & local releases, and information on KC’s diverse music, performance and arts scenes.

The band consists of four trained audio engineers who pay respect to conventional rock and roll and aren’t afraid to beg borrow or steal, consulting a smattering of western and surf music along the way.

Everyday/Everynight introduced themselves in the fall of 2009 with a lush, introspective debut record, Moon Phases, and have since continued to turn out mentally and emotionally stimulating indie rock. As the name implies, Everyday/Everynight explore a cycle of human existence; moments of wonder balanced by fits of chaos… From glowing anthems to raging art-punk the sound is nothing short of striking.

Members CJ Calhoun, Beau Bruns and Marty Hillard have opened for Peter Bjorn and John, The Appleseed Cast, Murder by Death, and The Republic Tigers. After signing to Kansas City label The Record Machine in early 2010, the band released their full-length debut album “Each Other All The Time.”

THE EMPTY SPACES – 9:30 – 10:00

Formed from a studio band that recorded Mat Shoare’s solo album by the same name The Empty Spaces have been interpreting Shoare’s song writing since early 2010. Eventually the three piece began to collaborate more with song arrangements and stylistic choices yielding a kind of “retro-punk rock” that is fronted with an energetic, yelping vocal style.

SOFT REEDS – 10:15 – 11:00

Soft Reeds is the brainchild of Ben Grimes (formerly of Astralwerks’ The Golden Republic), a Chicago native whose roots grip firmly in the ’77 Berlin sounds of Brian Eno, David Bowie and Iggy Pop, while embracing the richness of American indie rock. Originally started in 2007 as Grimes’ post-TGR solo project, Soft Reeds became a full band in 2009, and released the critically acclaimed ‘Soft Reeds are Bastards’ in 2010.

The band is getting ready to release their new album, “Into The Witness Chamber,” and will be participating in the Sonic Spectrum Tribute to the Minutemen, Sunday, June 24, at 8:00 PM, at the recordBar, 1020 Westport Road, KCMO, with Troy Meiss, Uft!, Robot Monkey Madman, Jorge Arena Trio, and Chad Rex.

Jason Beers, along with his work as a soloist, playing the saw at the Folly with The New Century Follies, or The Fishtank, or the recent Beatles tribute, or his work with other bands, has kept this band alive for nearly 20 years, having formed the band in 1994 with guitarist Jeremy Schutte and Bernie Dugan.

Jason Beers and Marco Pascolini also play together in the band Dead Voices with Mike Stover, Matt Richey and David Regnier. We’ll be hearing from David Regnier in our second hour when we play Ruddy Swain. Marco Pascolini also plays in the band Mr. Marco’s V7 with Mike Stover, Johnny Hamil, Kent Burnham, and Kyle Dahlquist. Marco Pascolini also played in the band Expassionates with Scott Easterday, Sam Platt and our guest in the second hour, Richard Burgess.

Bernie Dugan also plays in the band The Quivers, and in the band, Cher UK with Mike McCoy & Mark Reynolds. Cher UK and The Quivers will both be putting out a new music soon.

Richard Burgess played live on our show, several years ago, as bass player with the beloved KC band Expassionates. Richard joined us today to discuss his new solo release, “Midwestern Wind,” and to play LIVE in our 90.1 FM Studios.

Richard Burgess will be in concert, Saturday, June 23 at 7:00 PM in a special CD Release Party at the recordBar, 1020 Westport Road.

Pendergast frontman, and film maker Tony Ladesich wrote that Richard Burgess is, “the best bass player ever, seriously, Rich “tennis racket” Burgess. Rich has, to my calculations, never EVER played a note that didn’t need to be played. He is a master of economy and soul. Always in search of a deeper truth musically and never afraid to lay down the law.”

Richard spent 15 years playing with the band Hadacol.

Richard grew up here in the midwest, graduated from Raytown High, graduated from Rockhurst University, the 12 songs on Richard’s new recording were all written by him, and seem timeless.

[Kansas City’s very own: Krystle Warren, a Paseo Arts Academy Graduate was signed to a French Record Label and is touring Europe opening for Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle Warren’s new album came from a 13 day recording session in Brooklyn, where she recorded the songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections. Krystle wrote the songs, and produced the double vinyl release. ]
