They recorded Courage with Memphis-based engineer Doug Easley who has worked with Pavement, Sonic Youth, and Cat Power.]

3. Sara Swenson – “Welcome To The Family”

[Critically acclaimed singer songwriter Sara Swenson has released some of our most played and favorite recordings of the last 10 years. Her self titled debut ended up at the top of our list of The 100 Best Recordings of 2009. In 2010 Sara Swenson released her second full length recording, “All Things Big and Small” again working with Don Chaffer in Nashville who added new layers to Sara’s great songs and voice. In November of 2011, Sara released her 5 song EP called “Never Left My Mind,” featuring her band at the time, The Pearl Snaps. In that time frame, she also had picked up two Kansas City Singer-Songwriter of the Year awards, performed with Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair, and placed a song on the season finale of ABC’s “Private Practice.” Then after the school year ended in 2012, Sara Swenson left her job as a High School English and Journalism Teacher in Platte County High School, and left the Kansas City music scene, and she flew off to the United Kingdom, where she got married. In the Spring of 2014, Sara returned to Kansas City and performed for the Folk Alliance International Conference. Runway Lights is Sara’s fourth studio album that captures snapshots of her 18-month experience of living abroad, moving from dating to marriage and sorting through the accompanying transitions and emotions. 4. Calvin Arsenia – “Constellation”

[Calvin Arsenia premiered these songs in a live show at recordBar last November. Since Calvin Arsenia came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, he has released his EP, Moments, in 2014, and his EP Prose in 2015, and his Folk Alliance exclusive EP Catastrophe in 2016. He has played Folk Alliance International, Kansas City Fringe Fest, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, The Kauffman Center For The Performing Arts. Standing at 6 foot 5 inches, Arsenia’s powerful vocals span a 3.5 octave range, while playing piano, banjo, guitar and harp Calvin teaches music to elementary students. Calvin is also a graduate of Artist INC.]

On the phone we have Milwaukee based singer/songwriter Roxi Copland, who plays the Kansas City area on Tuesday, July 11, at 7:30 at InterUrban ArtHouse, 8001 Newton Street, Overland Park, Kansas.

Also joining us is Wolfe Brack Director of Operations at InterUrban ArtHouse, and Joy Baker a multi-media artist and owner of Createful Studios, LLC. Joy is a full time artist who has studio space at InterUrban ArtHouse.

Since 2008 Roxi Copland has released two EPs, two singles, a collaborative live album, a solo acoustic LP and two full-band LPs.

Roxi Copland grew up in Aberdeen Washington, but came to the midwest to go to school at Grinnell college near Des Moines, Iowa. Roxi Copland currently lives in Milwaukee.

InterUrban ArtHouse was founded in 2011 by local artist Nicole Emanuel, with 10 artist studios and a programming space.

Its mission has been to provide affordable work space to artists, as well as arts business classes, while bringing arts and cultural events to the Johnson County area.

InterUrban ArtHouse recently purchased the post office at 8001 Newton St (across from the former church basement they’ve been using) and renovated its 2000 square feet of space to expand their artist studios from 10 to 29, with over 40 artists and create a large gallery. We also have indoor and outdoor performance spaces for musicians and performers.

With their recent expansion, InterUrban ArtHouse now has two locations (across the street form one another at 8001 Newton Street and 8001 Conser Street) in Historic Downtown Overland Park.

InterUrban ArtHouse is looking to work with local & traveling musicians and performers of all sorts and get a live music series up and running. They also have a children’s and teen art camp that started last week, and we’ll also be offering art and writing classes to the public in the near future.

Along with the Tuesday, July 11 show with Roxi Copland, InterUrban ArtHouse is also hosting a grand opening of their newly expanded facility at 8001 Newton St in downtown OPKS on July 21 that will feature artwork from our 40 studio artists! Exhibition, studio tours (both at Newton and Conser Street locations) and live entertainment by local jazz duo A La Mode.

InterUrban ArtHouse operates 5 core programs:

Their ArtSmart program provided after school programming to at risk 5th & 6th graders. They also worked in grades K-6 in six schools. The summer months provided a no cost art opportunity each Wednesday to over 1350 children at the OP Farmer’s Market. In total, InterUrban ArtHouse served over 4,200 children!

Their entrepreneurial program, ArtWorks, hosted over 28 of classes to 277 small creative business owners, helping them advance their businesses.

ArtMatters continues to grow, offering a place for artists to teach as well as learn. The ArtHouse hosted 42 classes that were attended by over 370 seeking advancement in their creative practice.

Bringing art to the community, ArtsConnect reached large audiences through art exhibitions in Johnson County public libraries , stages at Overland Park’s Fall Fest, and each month on Local Life 3rd Fridays in our studios.

The InterUrban ArtHouse – Art Therapy program continues to provide an important alternative to traditional therapeutic options, in 2016 ArtHeals facilitated 26 events for our community.

11:21 – Interview with Kathryn Golden of Porchfest KC

The 4th Annual PorchFest KC, is scheduled for Saturday, October 14, in Midtown, KCMO, from Noon to 5:00 PM. Today on the show we’re playing music from three participating musical artists in this year’s festival, and we just heard KC based Keaton Conrad, who is signed up to play this year’s PorchFest. Registration is now open for bands wanting to apply. All genre welcomed.

Joining us to share details of Porchfest KC is Kathryn Golden who grew up in rural north-central Missouri. After college, she moved to the east coast on a whim to be an au paire. She spent her off days wandering the streets of New York City, plotting how she might permanently live in an urban area without it being in a cardboard box or having twenty roommates. When her job in NYC ended, she moved to Kansas City, where she landed her first and only truly corporate job — she taught a 30-day mutual fund program to customer service and tech workers. Eventually she moved to St Louis, where she was introduced to non-technical opportunities in tech companies. After a business trip to San Francisco, she decided she needed to live there. Over the next 14 years, she worked for a number of tech startups in project management, as well as a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley. In addition, she co-founded a non-profit, all-ages jazz performance space in Berkeley, where kids could jam with, and open for, adult acts. She also owned a neighborhood grocery market. and her final role before returning to Kansas City was in helping develop demonstratives (graphics) for large white-collar crime trials. While there, she also partnered with the Oakland School District to create a dozen libraries in Oakland’s elementary schools. Since returning to Kansas City, Kathryn has launched a wintertime storytelling series at the Pilgrim Chapel, and most notably launched a unique music festival in Midtown. She is the founder of PorchFestKC, a community music festival that takes place from front porches. This October 14th will mark the fourth year for the event.

For PorchFest KC – All performances are 60 minute sets. Performances are acoustic or near-acoustic. The goal is to be heard to the sidewalk, not down the street. This is an all-ages, alcohol free event. Registration is now open at http://www.porchfestkc.com.

16. The Host Country – “Deep Down”

[The Host Country was born while Ty Wistrand on guitar & vocals and Diana Weishaar on keyboards & vocals were both attending the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. They shared a passion for similar artists and styles of writing that led them to begin collaborating together . They officially began playing under the name ‘The Host Country’ shortly after Ty moved to Des Moines in early 2011 and started playing proper venues both there and in Cedar Falls shortly thereafter. In May 2011 they recorded an EP at the Sonic Factory Studios in Des Moines which displays the folk and rock roots they built their sound on, then in 2014 they released a full length album recorded at Midday Studios in Des Moines, Iowa from February 2013 through March 2014, with bass, drums, strings, organ, and an overall bigger sound. Tom Rue on bass) and Ethan Weishaar on drums are now permanent and essential members of the evolving Host Country music where you can now hear a bit of everything, from folk to rock, Americana, blues, and beyond.]

This is open to ALL genres, as long as their volume is appropriate. Kathryn would love to get more world music from a wide mix of communities, She would love more chamber and classical music

17. Cameron Johnson – “On My Own”

[Rogers, Arkansas based singer songwriter and Ten ’til Two Music artist, Cameron Johnson, released his debut single, Crooked Bangs, in November of 2015. After the success of the single he went back into the studio with producer, Brad Benge, to record his debut EP. Stack Your Stones features five new songs and a re-mastered version of Crooked Bangs. All six songs were written by Cameron and his father, veteran songwriter, Bruce Johnson.]

Traditional & future folk inspired by explorers Lewis & Clark showing how Betse & Clarke are trailblazers of sound & vision. “River Still Rise,” is a collection of originals and reworked traditional compositions that are presented “to be enjoyed as a musical adventure, much like the river exploration of the famous duo Lewis & Clark, an inspiration for the band’s name.” Betse Ellis writes in the extended liner notes: “The phrase River Still Rise appears in the journals of Meriwether Lewis, and to me, most notably when the Corps of Discovery readied their boats and supplies for the beginning of their river journey. Documenting all the details of the excursion included aspects of the weather, the general demeanor or specific behavior of the crew, and most certainly the level of the river. The river needed to be high enough to be navigable, and in that way, Clarke and I have been putting together our gear and supplies, building our boat, and watching the weather signs for about a year and a half at this point. The process of recording RSR took several months, beginning in early 2016. We made this recording at home with the best gear we could acquire at this point, and with Clarke’s long-built engineering and producing knowledge.”]

Since May of 2014 Bill Sundahl has served as 90.1 FM KKFI’s Special Events, Volunteer, Underwriting Coordinator. Prior to that he was owner of Spice of Life Productions. For more than a decade he has produced the Crossroads Music Fest, the Spring Dance, The Donkey Show, and many more great Kansas City events. He is also a working musician, playing bass and singing in the Starhaven Rounders. Bill was honored with Urban Hero Award from the Kansas City Downtown Council in 2007 and has won two Pitch Music Awards. He’s also on the Advisory Board of the Midwest Music Foundation. Bill joins us today to share details about KKFI Collaborations, Friday June 30, at 8:00 PM at The Folly Theatre.

Seven sets of arts organizations will perform a series of original, spectacular, and unique collaborative artistic creations, live on the world famous Folly Theater stage. KKFI will also record the performances and for an Audio CD to use in future fundraising efforts.

The night begins with a VIP Reception in the Folly Board Room with appetizers and cocktails between 6pm and 7pm. The On-Stage portion of the night will begin at 7pm with a panel discussion on the nature of collaboration in todays artistic world. Desmond has worked at Park University, and the American Jazz Museum. Desmond is a versatile performer and composer, who desribes his music as “firmly rooted in KC Kazz, R & B, gospel, and hip-hop music and strives to be something that the audience can feel in their spirit.”

Derick Cunigan is a singer, songwriter who is originally from St. Louis, Missouri. He studied broadcasting at Northwest Missouri State University. He has worked for KMBC Channel 9, Steel City Media and KBEQ, KFKF, and KCTV Channel 5.

Singer songwriter Ivøry Black has been busy this year playing Crossroads Music festival, The Middle of the Map Festival, The Westport Roots Festival, the KCPT Screening of “Real Boy” at The Kansas City Publlic Library. Ivøry Black plays the Kauffman Stadium, July 1, before the 1:15pm Royals home game. Born in 1986 in Peoria Illinois, and given up for adoption at the age of four, it was difficult to find trust in people after living with eight different foster families. Running away at 15, Ivøry moved from Indiana to Oklahoma and eventually ended up in Seattle. In 2011 Ivøry moved to Kansas City, and has became a part of new family. On June 23, 2015, Ivory released the debut EP, “Ready Get Set.” Ivøry is now currently in the process of writng and recording a debut full-length album, to be released in early 2018. Ivøry Black joins us to share new songs including, “Family Tables” that will be released as a single in August. Ivøry Black plays Revolution Records, on Friday July 7. The new album is being recorded in Ivøry’s home studio, a dream made possible by the management skills of Klaartje Van Lue, who took the opportunity to guide Ivory’s career.

Anna Selle is a very busy person. She is staff Photographer at Playlistplay, she works for for The Record Machine, and currently serves as Program Associate at The Literacy Lab. She has worked for the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in the educational department and volunteered with Americorps, Anna Selle grew up in Kansas City and studied English at Truman State University. Anna Selle is the co-founder Editor at HearQueer, a new print + digital publication featuring interviews, reviews, stories about queer identifying musicians with portions of proceeds going to local organizations working to protect and advocate for the queer community.

Anna has brought along her friend and co-founder of HearQueer, Bill Dickey who serves as Managing Editor of Hear Queer. HearQueer launches on June 30, at Mills Record Company featuring Erica Joy and Rachel Mallin & the Wild Type.

[The Kansas City based 4-piece band, Lovergurl caught our ear with their synth pop sound and lyrics reflecting social and political messages with hip hop and punk elements. Keyboardist and vocalist, Stephanie Bankston was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. She is a graduate of The University of Missouri. She moved abroad in her 20s, and lived in Seoul, Korea, where she played in a mostly female band called BaekMa (“White Horse”). Stephanie returned to Kansas City in the Fall 2015. Brook Worlledge, is 25 years old and is a Kansas City native. She is the band’s drummer and she sings and writes songs for the band. Brook is a defender of the proletariat. Brook’s influences range from the B52s, The Velvet Underground, The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Lovergurl guitarist and vocalist, Heather Andrews is also 25. She was born and raised in Rhode Island, and moved to Kansas City in 2011 and fell in love with the city.]

7. Pageant Boys – “Ease Me”
from: Shadowboxing EP / The Record Machine / May 19, 2017
[On what was originally slated to be a short trip to Istanbul, Alex Sheppard started recording music with his girlfriend’s laptop and a bluetooth headphone mic. None of Sheppard’s previous musical efforts incorporated electronics in a major way; “It was born of necessity,” says Sheppard. The songs on his new EP, Shadowboxing, came out of those original sessions. The songs are a sensual and almost effervescent approach that combine R&B elements with electronic and processed instrumentation. While in Istanbul, Sheppard established a routine in collaborating with a close friend and poet. He said they developed a fairly specific daily routine for working on music, with the intent of finishing songs, regardless of their quality. “I would wake up at 8 in the morning and start the song and get the chord structure. And then at 10, he would wake up and I would show him what I had. I’d make breakfast, and then I’d show him the melody I wanted for the vocal line. He’d go down and start writing the lyrics, we’d eat breakfast, and he’d have the lyrics written after we got done with breakfast. At 1, I’d start recording the vocals. It was a good schedule.” Sheppard has been writing and recording for the last decade even though he is just in 20’s. Before Sheppard started performing and recording as Pageant Boys he released several albums as Alexandre. Shadowboxing is the maturation of Sheppard’s artistic vision and introduction to a larger audience.]

[Bassist and lead vocalist L. Ron Drunkard, Andrew Whelan – Drums/Vocals, Brad Huhmann – Guitar, Desmond Poirier – guitar/vocals. The band writes, “With the election of an authoritarian narcissist to the White House and white supremacy again on the rise, this hard, fast and angry polemic on the current state of affairs has turned out to be unfortunately prescient.” The KC based Punk Rock and Roll band, Red Kate has been rocking venues since 2007. In the review of their debut EP, The Pitch wrote, “Bassist and lead vocalist L. Ron Drunkard, (aka Shawn Saving) is a socialist activist by day, bellows like an Appalachian Roger Daltrey.”The band’s first full-length album, “When the Troubles Come” was released on Replay Records in 2013. Last year the band released their follow up full – length record, “unamerican activities,” on Kansas City’s coop record label, Black Site. Both releases were recorded and engineered by Duane Trower at Weights and Measures Soundlab. Red Kate includes bassist and lead vocalist L. 11. Krystle Warren – “Get A Load”

[Krystle Warren was born June 13, 1981 in Kansas City, Missouri. She now lives in Paris. Krystle released the first single “Thanks and Praise” from her new album on May 22. She shared with us a few other tracks we could play. Last year in Krystle Warren premiered this song and her other new songs from this album at the Middle of the Map Fest in a packed room at Californos in Westport and later at The Polsky Theatre for the Performing arts Series of Johnsons County Community College. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and do all of the vocals and back up vocals. Krystle was on the show several times last year where she shared the inspirations for this record, early gospel recordings, that crossed over into Jazz fro Pharoah Sanders, Edwin Hawkins, The Swan Silvertones and more. Krystle Warren is originally from Kansas City. Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to The Beatles albums Rubber Soul and Revolver. Krystle Warren graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in Kansas City and collaborating with local jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and New York City, Krystle was signed to a French recording label, Because Music, and moved to Paris and released her album “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played numerous French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world, touring with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs: A Time you May Embrace” a recording from a 13 day session in Brooklyn, where she recorded 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections. 12. Kemet the Phantom – “After My Money”

[Produced, mixed and mastered by Kemet the Phantom who wrote about this recording, “Two years ago my uncle was turned up missing from his home in Chicago. My family would have never believed the news we received on April 11, 2017, the day before his birthday. We were informed that his DNA matched that of a body that was found shortly after he was reported missing. This is my attempt to grapple with the reality that I will never see my beloved and genius uncle again. Released just a month after the release of, The Invisible Man. Kemet The Phantom’s other full length release on Center of Attention Records. Kemet Coleman is Kemet the Phantom, a Kansas City based musicians who calls himself a rap Artist, actor, and Urbanist. Kemet is a member of the Hip-Hop duo COA (Center of Attention) and is the lead singer of the 8-member Funk/Rap/Soul band The Phantastics. Kemet, shines as a complete showman embracing a James Brown-esque persona via syncopated vocals, rhythmic dance moves and dapper costume style. Kemet the Phantom is a two time Pitch Music Award nominee for “Best Hip-Hop Act.” Kemet created the first ever Kansas City mayoral candidate rap song for the Sly James for Mayor campaign in 2010. A University of Missouri – Kansas City alumnus, Kemet, created “Gold and Blue” for UMKC’s sports teams, which has garnered thousands of plays on YouTube and has been featured on prime-time television commercials for the university. Broken Arrows got together to play a Neil Young Tribute at Davey’s Uptown in 2015. They received such a positive reaction and enjoyed playing together so they decided to continue as a band. [Debut solo release from Kansas City based jazz trumpeter. Hermon Mehari featuring Logan Richardson on saxophone, Aaron Parks on piano, Peter Schlamb on vibraphone, Rick Rosato on bass, Ryan J. Lee on drums, and a guest appearance by Kevin M. Johnson on vocals. Hermon Mehari grew up in Jefferson City, Missouri, home of Lincoln University. He is a 2010 graduate of the University of Missouri – Kansas City Music Conservatory. In 2015 he finished first, at the prestigious Carmine Carusa International Jazz Trumpet Competition at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville Texas. Hermon was a semifinalist in the 2014 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. In 2014 he released the CD “Our Journey” with Diverse, which was recorded in Paris featuring Logan Richardson on alto saxophone. Hermon was also the winner of the 2008 National Trumpet Competiton and placed second in the International Trumpet Guild competition in Sydney, Australia. He splits his time between touring and playing all over the world and creative projects in Kansas City. Hermon has collaborated with Cat Mahari on BAM! the Workshop, he is also a founding member of Diverse Jazz, Diverse Trio, and The Buhs. He also plays with Peter Schlamb, Making Movies, John Velghe & the Prodigal Sons. Hermon was featured on the world-renowned saxophonist Bobby Watson’s 2013 release, “Check Cashing Day”. [New EP from Jametatone, the solo project of J. Ashley Miller who also records with his band as Metatone. J. Ashley Miller is the The 2016 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Award Fellow. J. Ashley Miller is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. His genre-bending trans-modern work has been performed everywhere from YJ’s to the Kauffman Performing Arts Center to the MoMa PS1 in NYC. Ashley utilizes a diverse range of technologies, techniques, and collaborators to access obscure facets of the human emotional landscape. Jametatone opened all four shows last Friday and Saturday night at The Outburst KC, where Calvin Arsenia performed his 2017 Release Catastrophe Unplugged with guest musicians Beau Bledsoe, Fritz Hutchinson, Mark Southerland, and artist & vocalist Seth M. For 13 years she has been sharing her musical discoveries and information from her encyclopedic brain on Wednesday MidDay Medley. Nico Gray has been placing the needle on the record before he was able to read and turn pages of a book. [Kansas City based five-piece band formed in 2007 by Jeremy Chugg on lead vocals & guitar, Jonny Wooddell on steel guitar, Josh Orwig on guitar, Dave Dalbey on drums, and Nick Welsch on bass. This group of friends and roommates were all single when the band began, but now ten years later, in 2017 the band are in their late 20s and early 30s, and they’ve all gotten married, and babies are being born, and they are becoming rock and roll daddies. 5. Julian Davis And The Hay-Burners – “Kansas Plains”

[17-year-old, Julian Davis grew up in Pittsburg Kansas. He is a flatpicking phenomenon, singer and songwriter who walks, talks, and sings like he’s time-traveled here from the 1940s or early 1950s. Julian Davis and the Hay-Burners, are a 3-piece band formed with Julian Davis on guitar, & vocals, Seth Campbell on upright bass, and Shannon O’Shea on fiddle. The band was featured on season 11 of America’s Got Talent, and they flew to LA a few times for the production. Julian himself left home at an early age to play music on the road, traveling to cities all over the country. He currently calls the Lawrence and KC area home. At 16 years old, Julian won first place in the Kansas State Flatpicking Championship and Mandolin Championship. Julian also won first place in the Hillberry Arkansas 2016 flatpicking and mandolin competitions. Their unique brand of folk music is led by singer songwriter, Nicole Springer with powerful vocals & acoustic guitar, Shannon O’Shea on violin & background vocals, Anna Cook on cello & background vocals, and Aaron Derington on percussion. 7. Nicholas St. James – “Sewer Service”

[Singer-songwriter-vaudeville-folk-troubadour, Nicholas St. James released his critically acclaimed debut album THEATRES in 2016. His music is described as “more of a throwback to Vaudeville than the Dust Bowl.” Music Blogger Brian Clifton wrote, “Nicholas St. James blends together old and new to create a sound as distinct as its stage show. St. James mixes folk, blues, vaudevillian drama, and country together.” Based in Lawrence, Kansas, by way of St. Louis, Missouri, Nicholas is an authentic Midwestern folk musician, and credits Tom Waits as an inspiration. 8. Utah Carol – “The Golden West”

[The indie rock group Utah Carol, taking their name from a traditional cowboy song, are a duo consisting of husband and wife Grant Birkenbeuel and JinJa Davis. They began writing songs together in 1995 and launched the band in Chicago in 1997. The first Utah Carol album, Wonderwheel, was released by Orchard Records in June 1999. “My Fear,” a song from it, was chosen for inclusion in The Rough Guide to Americana, while another track, “Mabel Custer,” was featured in the film All the Real Girls. Comfort for the Traveler, Utah Carol’s second album, produced by Van Dyke Parks, was released April 22, 2002, on the group’s own Stomping Ground label. Rodeo Queen, their third album, appeared on May 15, 2007, anticipating the release of two more films using the band’s music, Kabluey and Love and Mary.]

IVØRY BLACK plays Middle of The Map Fest, Friday, May 5, at 9:45 PM, at The Westport Saloon. Born in 1986 in Peoria Illinois, and given up for adoption at the age of four, it was difficult to find trust in people after living with eight different foster families. Running away at 15, IVØRY moved from Indiana to Oklahoma and eventually ended up in Seattle. In 2011 IVØRY moved to Kansas City, and has became a part of new family. On June 23, 2015, Ivory released the debut EP, “Ready Get Set,” and is now finishing up work on a debut full-length album, to be released this Summer. Along with Middle of The Map, IVØRY BLACK is will play The Westport Roots Festival on May 27; Kansas City Public Library – Plaza Branch on June 10, for the KCPT screening of a documentary “Real Boy” about a young man’s transition from female to male; and the LIKEME LikeHouse – Teen Prom on May 12. IVØRY BLACK plays the LIKEME LikeHouse Teen Prom, May 12, from 6:30PM till 10:30PM. This is the second year that LIKEME LikeHouse puts together a Teen Prom for the LGBTQA Community. IVØRY BLACK donated her time and talent in support of this event last year and is doing so again this year. If anyone would like to attend, they can do so by getting their tickets at http://www.likemelighthouse.org. The event is free and parents are welcome to attend and meet with other parents.

IVØRY BLACK plays Westport Roots Festival May 27th, at Westport Saloon

IVØRY BLACK plays the June 9th Charity concert to raise funds for Cross-Lines. The concert will be with the Smoke Out Hunger barbeque contest. Cross-Lines is a foundation that offers help to homeless people by providing food, shelter and mental support. The event is from 6pm to 10pm.

IVØRY BLACK plays the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library, June 10th at 2:00 PM. IVØRY BLACK will be taking the stage for the KCPT screening of a documentary called “Real Boy” about a young man’s transition from female to male. The subject of the film, 19 year old Bennett Wallace is a talented musician and finds his voice and comfort in music.

IVØRY BLACK’s debut EP, Ready Get Set was released in June 2015, recorded and mastered by Larry Gann of Awestruck studios. Micah Burdick on guitar, Craig Kew on bass, and Lester Estelle, drummer for Kelly Clarkson, on drums.

Klaartje Van Lue is Ivory’s manager and she was the one who helped IVØRY find her way to KC. IVØRY has said that she saved her life.

Born in Peoria Illinois, in 1986, IVØRY BLACK, was Devin James Miclette, and has lived through many experiences in a journey that finds it’s way into the lyrics of IVØRY’s songs.

From IVØRY’s press materials: Growing up in a world where music was a way of self expressing oneself and turning to in times of trouble, it was inevitable that IVØRY would turn to it when waters were the roughest. “My parents listened to a lot of classics such as Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, The Rolling Stones, and Tom Petty just to name a few”, Ivory has said. One of which, when a child, Ivory almost burned out a Robbie Dupree single “Steal Away’’ due to the catchy rhythms and melody of the song. “I wasn’t really allowed to listen to newer things, ultimately cause of how conventional my parents really were.”

From The Kinsey Sicks press materials: Humble Beginnings. The Kinsey Sicks began in 1993 as a group of friends who went to a Bette Midler concert in San Francisco dressed as the Andrews Sisters. Assuming they’d be among many drag queens, they found themselves to be the only ones (other than Bette, of course). They were approached that night to perform at an upcoming event. Their reply – “we don’t sing” – was quickly disproved when they realized that all of them had musical backgrounds. They began singing and harmonizing that night, and the seed for the Kinsey Sicks was planted.

It has been nearly 11 years since Spencer Brown first premiered his alter ego Daisy Buckët at Bar Natasha. Since then Daisy Buckët has helped to usher in a new generation of drag in Kansas City.

The Kinsey Sicks were formed in 1993, by original members: Ben Schatz (“Rachel”) is a Harvard-trained civil rights lawyer, former Director of the national Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, and one-time presidential advisor on HIV issues, who created the first national AIDS legal project and authored Clinton’s HIV policy during the 1992 presidential campaign, and Irwin Keller (“Winnie”) is a University of Chicago-trained lawyer and linguist and former director of the AIDS Legal Referral Panel of the San Francisco Bay Area, who authored Chicago’s gay rights ordinance, passed into law in 1989. In 2004, the Kinsey Sicks were joined by actor/singer/designer Jeff Manabat, who is responsible for Trixie’s inordinate glamour and soaring counter-tenor, as well as the entire group’s hot couture. Beginning in October of 2008, the Kinsey Sicks are joined by the hilarious and talented Spencer Brown (“Trampolina”), a Kansas City-based actor and singer, already known for his drag character Daisy Buckët (pronounced, of course, “bouquet”)

24 year old Calvin Arsenia returns to Wednesday MidDay Medley after most recently joining us in March. His 2014 EP, Moments, was in our Top Ten, of The 114 Best Recordings of 2014. Calvin Arsenia recently came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland. Standing at 6 foot 5 inches, Arsenia’s powerful vocals span a 3.5 octave range, while playing piano, guitar and harp. Calvin Arsenia has been very busy, releasing a new EP, graduating from the the Artist Inc. program, playing piano in Christian Hankel’s Silver: A Noir Ballet, for KC Fringe Fest.

Last time Calvin was on the show, in March, he performed his song “Cardiac” live in our 90.1 FM Studios. Since then he haa been working on this song as a new recording, collaborating with Jamie Searle of My Brothers & Sisters, who has created new arrangements for the recording.

[Born in Dallas, Texas, in 1977 his mother remarried and moved the family to the Pacific Northwest in 1991. Alienated by his southern roots, the isolation led him to focus all of his attention on learning to play guitar and writing songs. In 1996, Votolato, started playing under the name Waxwing. The band signed with Second Nature Recordings out of Kansas City, MO. The band then released three full-length albums. In 1999, Votolato branched out as a solo artist touring with Damien Jurado, Small Brown Bike, The Get Up Kids, The New Amsterdams, Owen and The Casket Lottery, members of the latter having provided assistance as backing musicians on occasion. He has been married to his wife, April Votolato, for over 10 years, and they live in Seattle with their two children.]

Patrick Alonzo Conway is a Kansas City based composer, performer, educator, and independent musician. He holds a Masters in Music Composition from the UMKC Conservatory of Music. He was a founding member of newEar, and he works with Terrestrial Consort, Peoples Liberation Big Band of Greater Kansas City, Own/Cox Dance Group, Mambo DeLeon, Chris Hazelton’s Boogaloo 7, and BCR. He is a 2012 recipient of the Charlotte Street Foundation Generative Performing Artist Fellow Award. Patrick Alonzo Conway is also the Director of Gamelan Genta Kasturi.

Mr. Asnawa will lead the group; his wife Putu Oka Mardiani and two daughters Yunirika and Yonitika will perform several dance numbers. Featured works include three of his original compositions: “Sekar Taman” Dance (Flowers in the Garden), “Gita Genta Kasturi” (written for the group) and “Gilak Walipraja” along with three other Balinese classics: “Siwa Natha” (King Shiva), “Baris Tunggal” Dance depicting a solo warrior, “Margapati” Dance depicting a sleeping lion and “Oleg Tamulilingan” Dance which portrays the interaction of male and female bumblebees. Also included on the program will be current ensemble director Patrick Alonzo Conway’s gamelan arrangement of Sun Ra’s “Angels & Demons at Play”.

Mr. Asnawa has been faculty at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in conjunction with the Robert E. Brown Center For World Music since leaving Kansas City in 2006. He and his family maintain an active schedule performing, teaching and promoting Balinese Cultural Arts.

Gamelan Genta Kasturi, premiered a large scale collaborative work in 2011 featuring his Patrick Alonzo Conway’s original composition Angels & Demons at Play through Urban Culture Project and ArtSounds. Shortly thereafter, Gamelan Genta Kasturi was awarded Studio Space through the Charlotte Street/Urban Culture Project Studio Residency Program.

A gamelan is a traditional musical ensemble from Indonesia, typically from the islands of Java and Bali, featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, kendang (drums) & gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed & plucked strings. Vocalists may also be included. For most Indonesians, gamelan music is an integral part of Indonesian culture.

The term refers more to the set of instruments than to the players of those instruments. A gamelan is a set of instruments as a distinct entity, built and tuned to stay together – instruments from different gamelan are generally not interchangeable.

Patrick Alonzo Conway plays with other bands including: Chris Hazelton’s Boogaloo 7, newEar, BCR, and The People’s Liberation Big Band of Greater Kansas City who have been named as headliners for the 2015 Wichita Jazz Fest.

Matt Kesler is part of the rock and roll foundation of the Kansas City Music Scene. He is one of the founding members of The PedalJets, a band that formed in Lawrence, Kansas in 1984. The Pedaljets 2013 release What’s In Between, was #1 on our The 113 Best Recordings of 2013. What’s In Between also won a Pitch Music Award for Album of the Year. 24 year old Calvin Arsenia returns to Wednesday MidDay Medley after most recently joining us on October 22, 2014. His 2014 EP, Moments, was in the Top Ten, of our 114 Best Recordings of 2014. Calvin Arsenia recently came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland. Standing at 6 foot 5 inches, Arsenia’s powerful vocals span a 3.5 octave range, while playing piano, guitar and harp. Calvin Arsenia has written, arranged and produced 5 EPs including Prose, his new 9-song collection, released February 3, 2015. Recorded over the course of three live sessions at Edinburgh’s Napier University.

Their 2011 release “Synchronized Sleeping” was one of our favorite releases of 2011. The band is back with a brand new release, “Rainbow Records” this time on Golden Sound Records. JOining us is the bands co-founder and songwriter, Richard Gintowt, thank you for being with us on WMM.

Richard Gintowt told us about how Hidden Pictures was formed in 2008 when he met Michelle Gaume Saunders at the recordBar, while performing with his previous band OK Jones. Michelle brought her harmonies and glockenspiel to the mix.

In Tim Finn’s article for The Star last week you said, “Things really changed having Cameron (Hawk) (of The Dead Girls) on drums with Erik (Voeks) on bass.” “They’re really driving the songs. I guess more like the power pop angle I always wanted to have but didn’t have the personnel for. So once I started playing with them it inspired my songwriting to go in the direction of their personalities.”

Jade Osborne, Nate Bogert, and Calvin Arsenia, represent the collaborating team of the new theatrical multimedia performance called: “Lucid” presented by Voler – Thieves of Flight, collaborating with TR1B3, and running through July 27, at the Todd Bolender Center for Dance & Creativity, KC Ballet, 500 West Pershing Road, KCMO, as part of the KC Fringe Festival. Lucid features aerial and floor movements, live painting, video, an original score, and audience interaction. Shows continue: this Thursday, July 26 at 7:30 pm, and Friday, July 27, at 11:00 pm.

The music we just heard was created by Calvin Arsenia, and Britton Kilmer in collaboration with the entire company.

Nate Bogert has been collaborating with Voler from almost the very beginning, and with Jade is also part of the collective called TR1B3. Nate explained his process of creating sculptural moving photographic projections that he brings to the performance.

“Lucid” is running through July 27, at the Todd Bolender Center for Dance & Creativity, KC Ballet, 500 West Pershing Road, KCMO, as part of the KC Fringe Festival. Tell us about this new performance space?

Patrick Alexander is a multidisciplinary artist who incorporates collage, painting and drawing with original sound compositions, developed organically, and often exhibited as a site-specific installations. His work has been exhibited in LA, at The Telephone Booth Gallery, Next Space, Fahrenheit, H&R Block Artspace, Leedy-Voulkos, to name a few. As a curator he was owner operator of Locus Solis Art Gallery, and served as Art Gallery and Theatre Director the YWCA of Greater Kansas City Kansas. Since 1997 he has operated a mobile sound system for special events and clubs and has DJ’d (under the alias Fat Sal) locally and nationally. He specializes in rare vinyl recordings of soul, funk, Dub, reggae, latin, jazz, early hip hop and dance music.

As Facilities Manager for the Charlotte Street Foundation, Pat is responsible for the day to day management, operation, and maintenance of Urban Culture Project exhibition and performance spaces and Studio Residency Program facilities.

The KC Fringe Experimental Music Showcase is a new music festival produced in collaboration with the Kansas City Electronic Music Alliance (KCeMA) and Charlotte Street Foundation. Charlotte Street is excited to share the work of composers and groups creating ‘music on the fringe’ with a broader audience.

[Born Marva Ann Manning, May 1, 1944 in Kansas City, Kansas. Whitney’s performing career started as early as three years old while touring with her family’s gospel group, the Manning Gospel Singers. In 1960, when she was 16, she joined a Kansas gospel group, the Alma Whitney Singers, and ended up marrying Harry Whitney, the brother-in-law of the group’s leader. Ever since, she has gone by her married name, Marva Whitney. Marva Whitney is well known as a funk vocalist. Singing with James Brown in the late 1960s, she was able to make a name for herself with powerful songs like “I’m Tired, I’m Tired, I’m Tired (Things Better Change Before Its Too Late)” and “If You Don’t Work (You Can’t Eat).” Her recording of “It’s My Thing (You Can’t Tell Me Who to Sock It To)” reached the R&B Top 20. Her song “Unwind Yourself” has been sampled numerous times, most recognisably by DJ Mark the 45 King on his 1987 track “The 900 Number”, which was then sampled by DJ Chad Jackson on his 1990 hit single “Hear the Drummer (Get Wicked)” (UK #3 in July 1990), by DJ Kool on his 1996 hit “Let Me Clear My Throat” (UK #6 in March 1997), Sway on his 2009 track Mercedes Benz and Mac Miller on his 2011 track Party On Fifth Ave. In 2006, Marva Whitney collaborated with German born DJ/collector/manager DJ Pari and Japanese funk orchestra Osaka Monaurail to produce a new single, “I Am What I Am”. Osaka Monaurail style themselves on the James Brown sound and the single was produced in the fashion of an authentic release of the recordings she produced with Brown in 1969. Two successful tours of Japan and a full length album release followed, also entitled “I Am What I Am”. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, the tour was also brought to Europe. In December 2009, Marva Whitney collapsed on stage in front of thousands of fans in Lorne, Australia, while performing with The Transatlantics at Falls Festival. She was immediately rushed to Geelong Hospital, where doctors diagnosed a stroke. The remaining dates of her tour had to be canceled, but Whitney made an amazing recovery and is expected to perform again in 2010.]

[The Louis Chachere single was first issued on the tiny MJC imprint, followed by a Forte issue and finally winding up as a national release on Paula. Amazing Hammond Organ funk player.]

20. Trinikas – “Black is Beautiful” (45” Vinyl)

[Fantastic uptempo soulful funk, sung by a high school girl band named The Trinikas. There is some history behind I’ll try to sort out. Debbie Sheffield, Georgetta Dixon, Lenise Morgan and Marsha Bratton studied at the Douglass High School of Oklahoma City, very commited socially, which provided us a bunch of good young funky bands they compiled it on several LPs. Back in 1970 the Trinikas had an own penned song “black is beautiful” (Georgetta Dixon and Debbie Sheffield) and went to recorded it live for the self titled LP (being other compilations “black out” and “black experience”). Shortly after the song was issued on local Century label on 45, as Debbie Sheffield and the Trinikas. Then suddenly Marsha Britton died, just when they started to gain some fame. They were called to release the record again, under the production of hammond maestro Louis Chachere. They went to Kansas City area, releasing it on Independence, Missouri label Pearce. That was back in 1972.]
