[Produced with Grammy-winner Nathan Chapman at iconic Blackbird Studios in Nashville. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear have garnered international acclaim, and new fans from all over the world. They signed with Glassnote Records and recorded their debut full length album in Nashville with acclaimed producer Jim Abiss. They performed their debut single “Silent Movies” on The Late Show with David Letterman, they’ve toured across the United States, and Europe, more than once. They were featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NBC’s The Today Show, and “Later With Jools Holland and played Bonnaroo, Pilgramage, and the Newport Folk Festival, and the Ryman Theatre, in Nashville. Ruth Ward has continually performed throughout her life, mostly in coffee shops and open mics, for over 30 years, even recording a solo record. In the midst of this she got married and became a mom, and was busy raising a family. Madisen Ward was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother, where Madisen grew up watching his mom perform at local coffee shops. Eventually he began to learn to play the guitar, and poured his talent for writing into the music to create original songs. They began playing Madisen’s original songs along with the occassional cover of a classic track reinterpreted in their own incredibly beautiful performance of two voices and two guitars in harmony and orchestration. Their debut album, The Skeleton Crew, was released May 9, 2015 and was our most played record that year and was #1 on WMM’s The 115 Best Recordings of 2015. 4. Black Belt Eagle Scout – “Scorpio Moon”

[Released in September of 2018, Mother of My Children was the debut album from Black Belt Eagle Scout, the recording project of Katherine Paul. Heralded as a favorite new musician of 2018 by the likes of NPR Music, Stereogum, and Paste, the album was also named as a “Best Rock Album of 2018” by Pitchfork, and garnered further end-of-year praise from FADER, Under The Radar and more. // Arriving just a year after that debut record, At the Party With My Brown Friends is a brand new full-length recording from Black Belt Eagle Scout. Where that first record was a snapshot of loss and landscape and of KP’s standing as a radical indigenous queer feminist, this new chapter finds its power in love, desire and friendship. // At the Party With My Brown Friends is a profound and understated forward step. The squalling guitar anthems that shaped its predecessor are replaced by delicate vocals and soft keys, sentiments spoken and unspoken, presenting something shadowy and unsettling; a stirring of the waters. // The end result presents a captivating about-face that redefines KP’s beautifully singular artistic vision. At the Party With My Brown Friends is introduced in greater detail here via a new statement by the artist. // ARTIST’S STATEMENT: My name is Katherine Paul and I am Black Belt Eagle Scout. // I grew up on the Swinomish Indian Reservation in NW Washington state, learning to play piano, guitar and drums in my adolescent years. The very first form of music that I can remember experiencing was the sound of my dad singing native chants to coo me to sleep as a baby. I grew up around powwows and the songs my grandfather and grandmother sang with my family in their drum group. This is what shapes how I create music: with passion and from the heart. // After the release of Mother of My Children, I felt awake and desperately wanted to put new music out into the world. I had no real intent behind At the Party With My Brown Friends except creating songs around what was going on in my life. In the past few years, the reciprocal love I experienced within friendships is what has been keeping me going. A lot of what is in this album deals with love, desire and friendship. // The lead single, “At the Party,” starts off with a quintessential BBES guitar lick, heading into booming and abundant drums and vocals. The lines ‘How is it real? We will always sing’ came out of me one evening when I was crafting the song in my bedroom. Within my conscious self, there is always a sense of questioning the legitimacy of the world when you grow up on an Indian reservation. We are all at the party (the world), trying to navigate ourselves within a good or bad situation. I happen to be at the party with my brown friends- Indigenous, Black, POC who always have my back while we walk throughout this event called life. // I started writing “My Heart Dreams” the summer after I initially put out MOMC, writing the guitar chords in a friend’s apartment on Ohlone land. I had been in a transitional part of my life, leaving one love and wanting to find another so much so that I felt like my heart was dreaming about it along with my brain at night. I have an obsession with dreams, mainly because I cannot remember most of mine and often times that leaves me frustrated not knowing that part of myself. I would wake up and be overcome with anxiety about not knowing what had gone down in my brain so much so that I started feeling like my heart dreamt more than my mind, thus becoming the line, my heart dreams. // I wrote “Going To The Beach With Haley” one day when I was out on a coastal trip with my friend Haley Heynderickx. We loaded up her car with our blankets and instruments and drove straight to a beach where we sat and listened to the waves and young families with their babies on the beach. I had brought my mini casio keyboard that had an array of beats I used when writing songs. The beat that’s on the song just stuck there along with the main guitar part. Initially written on an old acoustic guitar my mom bought me, the song really transformed in the studio where I added drums and other melodies to create the song. // Throughout the course of my writing and playing around this record, most of these songs deal with relationships I have either with loved ones or friends. I think it low key has to do with my anthropology degree, but also the fact that writing and playing guitar in my bedroom just makes everything feel better for me. For the longest time, I wanted to convey my feelings around coming out to my family. It had been a good experience for me and while I know it is not always that way when kids decide to tell their family, I think that we can open our hearts more for that. I would watch youtube videos of moms being proud of their kids surrounding their sexuality and gender identity and I really wanted to raise my voice to say, ‘my family too!’ What started with trying to sound so literal in this song ended up turning into a song about how much I love my mom and how our connection is eternal. “You’re Me and I’m You” is about being one with your mother, since we all were a part of their bodies at one point. It’s me trying to explore who she is and who I am with my love for people.]

5. Hand Habits – “can’t calm down”

[Meg Duffy grew up in a small town in Upstate New York and they cut their teeth as a session guitarist and touring member of Kevin Morby’s band. The Hand Habits project emerged after Meg moved to Los Angeles; it started as a private songwriting outlet but soon evolved into a fully-fledged band with Meg at the helm. Hand Habits’ debut album, Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void), was released by Woodsist Records in 2017. The LP was entirely self-produced and recorded in Meg’s home during spare moments when they weren’t touring. Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void) is a lush, homespun collection of folk songs that found Meg in an exploratory state as an artist moving out on their own for the first time. Two years later, Hand Habits has returned with their sophomore album, placeholder. To make this album, Meg chose to work in a studio and bring in collaborators, entrusting them with what had previously been a very personal creative process. Over the course of 12 tracks, Meg emerges with new confidence as both a bandleader and singer. This album is as tender and immediate as anything Meg’s ever written, but it’s also intensely focused and refined, the work of a meticulous musician ready to share their singular vision with the world. The name placeholder stems from Meg’s fascination with the undefinable. Their songs serve as openings — carved-out spaces waiting to be endowed with meaning. As a lyricist, Meg is drawn to the in-between, and the songs on this new album primarily confront the ways in which certain experiences can serve as a stepping stone on the road to self-discovery. “A big aspect of my songwriting and the way I move through the world depends on my relationships with people. The songs on placeholder are about accountability and forgiveness,” Meg says. “These are all real stories. I don’t fictionalize much.” Meg describes these songs as their most direct to date, crafted with clear intention, and unlike Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void), placeholder doesn’t meander. “It’s less of a submerged landscape and more a concise series of thoughts,” Meg explains. Instrumentally, placeholder can be situated alongside some of Meg’s folk-adjacent contemporaries like Angel Olsen or Big Thief, and the guitar work on this album proves that Meg continues to be one of the finest young musicians working today. placeholder is another entry in the Hand Habits songbook, but it’s also a valuable testament of our time. While placeholder inspires a sense of ease, simple questions rarely beget easy answers and Meg honors the indescribable joy and profound sorrow that comes with figuring things out, one step at a time.]

6. Bon Iver – “Hey, Ma”

[Bon Iver is an American indie folk band founded in 2006 by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. Vernon released Bon Iver’s debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago, independently in July 2007. The majority of that album was recorded while Vernon spent three months isolated in a cabin in northwestern Wisconsin. The band later won in 2012 the Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album for their album Bon Iver, Bon Iver. They released their third album 22, A Million to critical acclaim in 2016, which was followed by their fourth album i,i in 2019.The name “Bon Iver” derives from the French phrase bon hiver (French pronunciation: ​[bɔn‿ivɛːʁ]) (“good winter”), taken from a greeting on Northern Exposure.]

7. Calvin Arsenia – “Back To You (Paul Brown Mix)”

[1st single from L.A. Sessions released August 16. Produced by Tony Braunagel (he also delivers exquisite percussion on LA Sessions) with Paul Brown on guitar, Mike Finnigan on keyboards, Freddie Washington on bass, and David Garfield on piano. Between them, the five musicians have worked with some of music’s most iconic names, including Jimi Hendrix, George Benson, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Leonard Cohen, Bonnie Raitt, Chuck Loeb, Rickie Lee Jones, Buddy Guy, The Neville Brothers From Center Cut Record Press Release: “It was a thrill for me to work with such legendary players,” says Calvin. “Not only were they incredibly talented, but I got off a plane straight from Australia, hit the studio, and they were more than ready to get to that place where you honor the songs, leaving their egos at the door and honoring what the muses tell them. It was one of the best recording experiences I ever had.” Calvin’s production M.O. on previous recordings was to piece together songs “like pieces of a puzzle” and “layer them over several sessions.” He believes the immediacy of the LA Sessions, and having the instrumentation all happening in the “same emotional space together as a band,” powerfully served the intimacy of the album, particularly on the reflective “Back To You.” “It’s one of the most vulnerable songs on the album, and it always plays that way in my live set, and the guys were able to help me capture that,” he says. “The song is a very heartfelt admission of guilt, I think. But it’s done in a way people usually don’t want to talk about. Breakup songs are usually angry and lashing out and this is a very sober-minded take on it. It’s not something we usually want to admit, surrendering or admitting defeat in a relationship, because everyone thinks you’re always going to make it through, and this is saying ‘no we didn’t…but it’s OK.’” Born in Orlando, Florida, his creative journey really began when he moved to the KC suburb of Olathe, teaching himself the guitar, and eventually the harp. He learned his signature instrument at the age of 20 after he couldn’t find a harpist as determined as him to meld folk, rock, classical, rap and R&B into the irresistible fusion which has become his calling card in the Kansas City music scene and beyond. His passion for stretching the boundaries of musical expression saw him transform a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland’s Fringe Festival early in his career into a life-changing music mission, with an Edinburgh church offering him a role as musical liaison between the church and the city that would change his life. Two years and 300 shows later, Calvin returned to Kansas City reborn as a humanistic songwriter/performer whose impassioned and conceptual stage shows (regularly sold-out in Kansas City, currently catching fire on the West Coast with a diverse following across Europe), are collaborative, costumed-culture-bridging spectacles which In KC Magazine has hailed as ‘equal parts opera, symphony, musical theatre, rock show, all built around its creator: a charismatic 6-foot-7-inch harpist with a natural stage command and knack for gilding gold and painting lilies.’ Calvin’s 2018 national debut, Cantaloupe (Center Cut Records), has been acclaimed for melding diverse textures into an alluring signature sound for the adventurous artist. Most recently, Calvin performed live at L.A.’s The Mint, showcasing the songs on LA Sessions with the musicians who collaborated with him on the album. Says Calvin: “It’s such a special experience to play with them. To be able to perform these songs in front of an audience and do this for a living – to have made a career out of something I love is so amazing – it is an honor that I never take for granted.” On September 15, 2018 Calvin released Cantaloupe on Center Cut Records. Calvin released Honeydew on June 28, an EP including a remix of three of the songs from Cantaloupe.]

Dwight Frizzell is a Professor at KCAI, and is an internationally recognized artist whose work combines video, performance, installation, music, audio art, and writing. Frizzell’s work about his boyhood neighbor, Harry S. Truman, was featured in the Peabody-awarded “Lost and Found Sound” series broadcast on National Public Radio. Frizzell has produced an opera based on the life of Charles Darwin. In addition to his B.F.A. degree from KCAI, he holds a terminal fine arts degree in Sound Design from the UMKC. Dwight Frizzell, is a founder of the “groovy polyphonic jazz/dance” band, Black Crack Revue, now in their 37th year. Dwight Frizzell is also a founding member of the newEar contemporary chamber ensemble, and is host & producer of “From Arc To Microchip” heard Wednesdays at 11:30 PM on 90.1 FM.

Also with us is Leo Wetherill, who has been supporting artists, creating venues, and producing performance and musical productions in Kansas City since the late 1980s. He is one of the founders of the Human Observation Lab, and early pioneer space in downtown Kansas City offering performance art space for the early concerts of The Cocktails, and early productions of Gorilla Theatre, Eyes Wide Open, nationally recognized visual artist and DJ Nick Cave, and many other area bands and and performance groups and DJs.

Last time Dwight & Leo were on the show was on June 12 just prior to their midday Solstice concert-June 21, at KC Art Institute’s Vanderslice Reception Patio (behind historically restored Vanderslice Hall), 4415 Warwick Blvd., KC, MO. Heliophonie (Sun Sound) was performed in-sync to the sun’s harmonic tones. The solar sphere oscillates like a bell ringing every 4 minutes 48 seconds (as heard on a large gong). Overtones pulse in quadra-pole rotation (realized by the instruments & electronics). Solar storms moving vigorously through the resonating convection-zone are performed by instrumental duets.

“Bridges are expressions of our social-spiritual evolution and impulse toward transcendence.” –Rev. Dwight Frizzell

Bridges are living, resonant beings activated by our crossing formidable passageways now made passé. Crossing Liberty Bend Bridge, our concert’s featured instrument, takes a mere 14 seconds. We invite you to hang with the bridge a moment longer, entertain its own perspective, listen inside its metal structure, and hear its rhythms and singing tones as recorded and mixed by Dwight Frizzell with live performance engineer Leo Wetherill. The bridge’s harmonic sound world is joined and orchestrated by an ensemble of Tibetan Singing Bowls directed by Steve Donofrio, Balinese gamelan instruments directed by Patrick Conway, long-hose zwoomists and Bill Dye’s lap steel guitar solo.

The sonorous Missouri River bridge at Highway 291 in Sugar Creek is a magnificent traffic-activated instrument expressing a flow of people, materials, animals and plants. Its voice, animated by us humans and full of percussive and harmonic sound, is intimately heard by nestling an ear on its metal understructure (or attaching contact microphones as heard here to map the sound spatially to the performance space with the audience inside the bridge’s singing form.

Liberty Bend Bridge is actually two continuous truss bridges on Highway 291 over the Missouri River in Sugar Creek. It is the rare example of a bridge crossing the Missouri River, but not crossing a county line. The Missouri River was rerouted in 1949, leaving part of the county north of the river. The original Liberty Bend Bridge was located about two miles to the north, which then crossed over into Clay County. The main span length is 460.1 feet and the total length is 1,883.3 feet. Vertical clearance is 16.5 feet.

INTRODUCING LIBERTY BEND BRIDGE: Ron Achelpohl is the Director of Transportation and Environment at the Mid-America Regional Council, the council of governments and metropolitan planning organization for the bi-state Kansas City metropolitan area. Ron directs MARC’s transportation and environmental planning and policy work along with related implementation activities such as the Operation Green Light traffic signal coordination system, the RideShare program and public education initiatives for air quality, water quality, active transportation and transportation safety. Prior to serving in his current role, Ron was an Assistant Director of Transportation at MARC, and before that held positions with the Missouri Department of Transportation. Ron is a registered Professional Engineer with degrees in civil engineering from the University of Missouri and engineering management from the University of Kansas. He is an active member of the American Public Works Association and serves on the boards of several local non-profit organizations.

RON ACHAPOHL’S INTRODUCTION: “As alluded to, I think all bridges are poetic, but I’m not. So, I’m going to set the context for the bridge with a few facts and figures about how it fits into the transportation system in the greater Kansas City area, which is kind of my area of expertise. I’ll start by pointing out that this is one of 3599 bridges in the eight county area that we do transportation planning in. It’s one of only 10 bridges though – highway bridges – that cross the Missouri River. The farthest one in the metro area is up in Leavenworth at Route 92, and as you go down the river there are nine other crossings until you get to the Liberty Bend Bridge. The next crossing to the east is in Lexington, Missouri it’s on Route 13, which coincidentally, is about a 40 minute drive from this bridge – about as long as this piece will be this evening. The bridge, it’s purpose is carrying people and vehicles and goods across the river and it carries – the most recent stats we got about that are that it carries about 23,000 vehicles a day across the bridge and the occupancy rate for people in the Kansas City area, that translates to a little over 24,000 people a day that use the bridge. To put that perspective, there are over 100,000 vehicles that use the Kit-Bond Bridge on I-35 across the river, and about 40,000 vehicles a day on the Buck O’Neil Bridge, that is, the old Broadway Bridge across the Missouri River. The original crossing was built back in 1927, and it crossed at where the Clay County-Jackson Country line is now. The river channel was actually moved to the south, so the bridge that is there now is a twin-span, the northbound span was the first one that was constructed, and it was originally built back in 1949, it was rehabbed in 1986, and it was replaced in 2005. The southbound bridge was built new and added the pairing in 2001. It carries Missouri Route 291, which runs from the city of Liberty south to the city of Harrisonville, it crosses through three different counties and seven different cities. So, it’s an important regional connector; it doesn’t have the most traffic in the region, but it really serves an important purpose. I’m really excited to be a part of the piece this evening, I think it’s always helpful to draw attention to the invisible infrastructure that the community relies on.”

INTRODUCING TIBETAN SINGING BOWLS: Steve Donofrio has been a Free-lance Audio Engineer & Technical Consultant for the past 38 years. He is a founding member of the National Audio Theatre Festivals and served as Technical Coordinator for Midwest Radio Theatre Workshop for 10 years and its Executive Director for three. As a member of The Deli Llama Orchestra, Steve has played Tibetan Singing Bowls for over 30 years, as featured on numerous studio and live recordings from LA to Katmandu, Nepal. Steve is an avid collector of Tibetan Singing Bowls, using them as implements of music and for meditative and tonal healing. Steve has worked on many musical projects as a producer, recoding & mixing engineer, and audio artist. Currently he works at the Columbia Public Library as a technical support specialist and lives in rural Missouri with his wife, two dogs, and a charm of 1000 hummingbirds.

INTRODUCING THE BRIDGE SOUNDSCAPE: Dwight Frizzell is an internationally recognized artist/soundscape composer who began recording environments and playing with their acoustic imprints early on — a practice he calls Turtle Music — as heard on his 1976 LP Beyond the Black Crack. The complexities of place were fore-fronted in Dwight’s Peabody-awarded Center of the World (1997), which features his childhood neighbor Harry S. Truman at the shopping center that leveled the beloved Truman family farm in 1957. Recently, Frizzell was panel moderator for Sounding Sculptural Space at the International Sculpture Conference with composer Robert Carl and long-string instrumentalist Ellen Fullman. Dwight’s teachers included Sun Ra and Douglas Davis. He earned a terminal degree in Sound Design for Theatre at UMKC, and is currently Professor in Converging Media at KCAI.

He has been producing the “From Ark to Microchip” series with Jay Mandeville since 1984. Ark radio has been heard on KOPN, KCUR, KGNU, RESONANCE FM (London), RADIO NOVA (Paris), and WKCR (New York).

Dwight’s boyhood neighbor in Independence, Missouri was Harry S. Truman, who appears in Dwight’s work as a pianist, Atlantean King and time-traveler. Dwight released the “Beyond the Black Crack” LP in 1976, studied video art with Douglas Davis (1977), clarinet with Raymond Luedeke (1979) and metaphysics with Sun Ra (1980-1990). His work was exhibited at Biennale de Paris, World-Wide Video Festival (Amsterdam), and broadcast on NPR.

Dwight’s collaborative third-mind creations with writer Jay Mandeville includes plays, essays, and Ark scripts. Their work was published in “Semiotext(e) Radiotext(e)” and “Experimental Sound and Radio” (MIT Press). They edited The Pitch newspaper in the early ‘80s.

Dwight’s music is available on Paradigm discs (England). He plays Buffet clarinets and Yamaha saxophones and wind controllers. His collaborations with Michael Henry include “Sonic Force,” where AFR A10 Warthog Attack Planes were used as musical instruments. Frizzell is a founding member of the Black Crack Revue, the newEar contemporary chamber ensemble, and the National Audio Theatre Festivals. He performed recently with David Ossman and Phil Proctor of the Firesign Theatre.

How did this band come to be a band?

Last time the band was on the show was just prior the Fathers High Horses EP Release Party, Saturday, March 9, at 8:00 PM, at the 2016 Main Event Space at 2016 Main St, KCMO, with Eems and Belle & The Vertigo Waves.

Fathers released the 4 song EP High Horses on March 1, 2019 and now 6 months later has this new single out.

Bryce Veazey was recently on stage for the Crossroads Music Fest playing with Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear on Saturday night on the KC Crossroads stage.

Six months and many coffee-fueled discussions later, I’m so privileged to announce this performance. The creative process between Jen, Eddie Moore, Brian Steever and Jason Emmond has been absolutely mind blowing.”

This event includes the jazz accompaniment of “The Fellas,” renowned musicians Eddie Moore (keys), Jason Emmond (bass) and Brian Steever (drums), bringing Jen’s performance to sonic life.

Unconfirmed Certainties “is the intersection of suspicion and intuition” and follows Harris’ year-long exploration, documentation and in-process recovery from flashbacks, suicidal ideation and a significant mental breakdown following a devastating, unexpected public breakup and facing, head-on, a C-PTSD diagnosis.

An outspoken advocate for an accessible mental health system, Harris was relieved to finally put a name to symptoms she had experienced since her early teens. She fought for decades to overturn the misdiagnosis of Bipolar II disorder, which she was given around age 15 as a way to “medicate away her queerness and creative spirit.” Due to the limitations set upon her by the current health care system, this endeavor took Harris nearly 20 years to accomplish.

As the public has come to know from her career, Harris spares no one’s feelings or privacy in her searing truth-telling performance.

Formed in 2011 and hardly taking time to sit since then, the Ghost Wolves create, record and tour at a rapid clip. Blending rock n’ roll, punk rock, garage and blues with electronic elements, the duo has earned a reputation as one of the hardest working bands in the modern rock n’ roll underground, touring internationally for almost 8 years straight, with nearly 1000 shows between them in 23+ countries including most of western Europe, the USA, U.K. and Japan. The duo recorded these three new tracks in early 2019 with engineer/producer John Michael Schoepf (bassist for Ray Wylie Hubbard, Night Glitter) in his Austin living room studio. The recording took place during a very dark time for Carley and Jonny, who have been married for 7 years. Jonny’s father received a terminal cancer diagnosis in late 2018. These songs came together while Jonny was tending to his father in Connecticut, with Carley sending demo songs to him from Texas. When his father stabilized somewhat, Jonny returned to Austin to take a break and they both therapeutically recorded these songs. [Ivory Black was born in 1986 in Peoria Illinois, as Devin James Miclettet. Ivory’s birth mother put them up for adoption at the age of four. Ivory speaks about how it was difficult to find trust in people offering their home to someone denied of it for so long, Ivory had lived with eight different families, before running away at 15, moving from Indiana to Oklahoma and eventually ending up in Seattle. In 2011, after a friend sent a plane ticket, Ivory landed in the Kansas City area, and became a part of new family where they were able to have solid ground and over the past several years has been performing in singer-songwriter showcases and in June 2015 Ivory released their debut EP, Ready Get Set.]

[Originally from KC, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label, Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs: A Time You May Embrace” a recording from a 13-day session in Brooklyn, where she recorded 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections.]

Heliophonie (Sun Sound) – A midday Solstice concert–Friday June 21, from 11am to noon at Kansas City Art Institute’s Vanderslice Reception Patio (behind historically restored Vanderslice Hall), 4415 Warwick Blvd., KCMO.

Heliophonie (Sun Sound) will be performed in-sync to the sun’s harmonic tones. The solar sphere oscillates like a bell ringing every 4 minutes 48 seconds (as heard on a large gong). Overtones pulse in quadra-pole rotation (realized by the instruments & electronics). Solar storms moving vigorously through the resonating convection-zone are performed by instrumental duets.

Myth-Science Ensemble featuring Thomas Aber, Patrick Conway, Hannah Kelly, Allan Winkler, Dwight Frizzell and guests will be resonating with the sun.

Open-to-the-public event at an accessible outdoor vantage point.

In case of rain, the event will be held in Vanderslice Reception Room.

This is an artist-sponsored event with additional support from the Kansas City Art Institute, a four year undergraduate college of art and design, where Dwight is Professor in Sound and Converging Media.

Dwight Frizzell is host & producer of “From Arc To Microchip” airing Wednesday 11:30 PM – 90.1 FM KKFI – Kansas City Community Radio.

Dwight Frizzell is an internationally recognized artist whose interdisciplinary work combines video, performance, installation, music, audio art and writing. He has been producing the “From Ark to Microchip” series with Jay Mandeville since 1984. Ark radio has been heard on KOPN, KCUR, KGNU, RESONANCE FM (London), RADIO NOVA (Paris), and WKCR (New York).

Dwight’s boyhood neighbor in Independence, Missouri was Harry S. Truman, who appears in Dwight’s work as a pianist, Atlantean King and time-traveler. Dwight released the “Beyond the Black Crack” LP in 1976, studied video art with Douglas Davis (1977), clarinet with Raymond Luedeke (1979) and metaphysics with Sun Ra (1980-1990). His work was exhibited at Biennale de Paris, World-Wide Video Festival (Amsterdam), and broadcast on NPR.

Dwight’s collaborative third-mind creations with writer Jay Mandeville includes plays, essays, and Ark scripts. Their work was published in “Semiotext(e) Radiotext(e)” and “Experimental Sound and Radio” (MIT Press). They edited The Pitch newspaper in the early ‘80s.

Dwight’s music is available on Paradigm discs (England). He plays Buffet clarinets and Yamaha saxophones and wind controllers. His collaborations with Michael Henry include “Sonic Force,” where AFR A10 Warthog Attack Planes were used as musical instruments. Frizzell is a founding member of the Black Crack Revue, the newEar contemporary chamber ensemble, and the National Audio Theatre Festivals. He performed recently with David Ossman and Phil Proctor of the Firesign Theatre.

“Party’s Just Begun” is one half of a two song single – debut release from the Kansas City / Lawrence band, Jesus Loves The Atom Bomb, who were formed in July 2017 and started out as a four piece with guitar, bass, vocals, and drums and have expanded to a seven piece to include a horn section of trumpet, sax, and trombone. Earlier this year the band played The MidCoast Takeover in Austin, Texas sponsored by Midwest Music Foundation. The band returned the favor by donating all proceeds from their new release to the Midwest Music Foundation, a non-profit organization that Strengthen musicians’ health through wellness services and health care grants. Jesus Loves The Atom Bomb was formed in July 2017.

The Band started out as a four piece with guitar, bass, vocals, and drums and have expanded to a seven piece to include a horn section of trumpet, sax, and trombone.

Their debut release, Merriam Shoals Sessions Vol. 1. was recorded & mixed from Dec. 2018 through Jan. 2019 by David Moore, Merriam Shoals Studio. The songs were produced by Brad Growcock. with special guest: Tim Hoggard—tenor saxophone.

The band is: Miles Bassett on sax, Jay Bernard Beatty on vocals, Shmoo Bigus on trombone, Steve Eddy on drums, Sean Lange on trumpet, Brad Growcock on lead guitar & backing vocals, and Bill Rogers on bass.

Brad Growcock, who writes most of the songs for the band, was also a member of the veteran band Mahoots

Steve Eddy was in The Micronotz, with Jay Hauptli, John Harper, and in later years Matt Kesler. Also known as the Mortal Micronotz, this American punk rock/alternative rock quartet was formed in 1980 in Lawrence, Kansas, and along with bands like The Embarrassment and Get Smart!, were prominent on the local music scene in Lawrence in the early 80s.

JLtAB creates its righteous, explosive horn blasting retro garage power pop punk from an undisclosed bunker in flyover LFK for the greater peoples of the world to rejoice in, gyrate & libate and generally have gobs of fun.

Kansas City based musician, composer, and teacher Johnny Hamil joins us to share new music from his upcoming third GAV7D release, PunkFunkPolka. Johnny plays in the band Pamper The Madman, and his band Mr. Marco’s V7 plays the first Thursday of the month at The Ship. Johnny Hamil also plays bass with Mikal Shapiro, and can be heard on the recordings o many Kansas City and Lawrence based artists including Stephonne Singleton. Johnny Hamil collaborates with jazz combos, theatre productions, and is also known for his works with The Malachy Papers. As a teacher of the bass, Johnny Hamil was recently featured in the latest season of Queer Eye on Netflix. Johnny Hamil’s annual KC BASS Workshop is June 25 through June 29 at Shawnee Mission North High School in the music department (park in West parking lot). Johnny is one of the founding members of the band Mr. Marco’s V7, a band that has reinvented themselves with each new release, and changed and evolved with different line-ups. Known for their experimental, instrumental music, Johnny told us that for ALL of the music he has composed for the band came to him in his dreams.

In 2011, the classically trained bassist Johnny Hamil, who dreams his musical compositions in his sleep, noticed something revolutionary for his creative process when Johnny’s dream compositions included lyrics for the first time, and this set him on a new path to create, the GAWD project, which is not Mr. Marco’s V7 proper, but it is members of the Mr.Marco’s V7 from throughout the long history of the the band. The concept was to collaborate a vocal version of a composition with musical friends and then have various lineups of the V7 family interpret the material in different ways: Cartoonnoirjazz, PunkFunkPolka, and Free Exotica Middle Eastern. Selections from the GAWD project premiered at the Folk Alliance International.

Chad Meise is a master of sound and the studio and stage producing and engineering records for Mr. Marco’s V7, Hearts of Darkness, Expassionates, Rex Hobart, Mike Dillon, The Gaslights, Atlantic Fadeout, and The Country Duo, to name a few.

As a teacher of the bass Johnny Hamil was recently featured in the latest season of Queer Eye on Netflix.

Johnny plays in the band Pamper The Madman.

Mr. Marco’s V7 plays the first Thursday of the month at The Ship.

The GAV7D project of recordings feature various members of Mr. Marco’s V7 from their 20 year history. Davey’s Uptown Rambler’s Club, 3402 Main St, KCMO, was where the band first performed live in the early 90s. Marco Pascolini, Johnny Hamil, Chris Fugitt, and Clark Wyatt formed the original band.

Dwight Frizzell is a Professor at KCAI, and is an internationally recognized artist whose work combines video, performance, installation, music, audio art, and writing. His projects emphasize research and a commonality between the fine and performing arts. Frizzell’s work about his boyhood neighbor, Harry S. Truman, was featured in the Peabody-awarded “Lost and Found Sound” series broadcast on National Public Radio. Frizzell has produced an opera based on the life of Charles Darwin. In addition to his B.F.A. degree from KCAI, he holds a terminal fine arts degree in Sound Design from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

[The Kansas City based 4-piece band, Lovergurl caught our ear with their synth pop sound and lyrics reflecting social and political messages with hip hop and punk elements. Keyboardist and vocalist, Stephanie Bankston was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. She is a graduate of The University of Missouri. She moved abroad in her 20s, and lived in Seoul, Korea, where she played in a mostly female band called BaekMa (“White Horse”). Stephanie returned to Kansas City in the Fall 2015. Brook Worlledge, is 25 years old and is a Kansas City native. She is the band’s drummer and she sings and writes songs for the band. Brook is a defender of the proletariat. Brook’s influences range from the B52s, The Velvet Underground, The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Lovergurl guitarist and vocalist, Heather Andrews is also 25. She was born and raised in Rhode Island, and moved to Kansas City in 2011 and fell in love with the city.]

7. Pageant Boys – “Ease Me”
from: Shadowboxing EP / The Record Machine / May 19, 2017
[On what was originally slated to be a short trip to Istanbul, Alex Sheppard started recording music with his girlfriend’s laptop and a bluetooth headphone mic. None of Sheppard’s previous musical efforts incorporated electronics in a major way; “It was born of necessity,” says Sheppard. The songs on his new EP, Shadowboxing, came out of those original sessions. The songs are a sensual and almost effervescent approach that combine R&B elements with electronic and processed instrumentation. While in Istanbul, Sheppard established a routine in collaborating with a close friend and poet. He said they developed a fairly specific daily routine for working on music, with the intent of finishing songs, regardless of their quality. “I would wake up at 8 in the morning and start the song and get the chord structure. And then at 10, he would wake up and I would show him what I had. I’d make breakfast, and then I’d show him the melody I wanted for the vocal line. He’d go down and start writing the lyrics, we’d eat breakfast, and he’d have the lyrics written after we got done with breakfast. At 1, I’d start recording the vocals. It was a good schedule.” Sheppard has been writing and recording for the last decade even though he is just in 20’s. Before Sheppard started performing and recording as Pageant Boys he released several albums as Alexandre. Shadowboxing is the maturation of Sheppard’s artistic vision and introduction to a larger audience.]

The band writes, “With the election of an authoritarian narcissist to the White House and white supremacy again on the rise, this hard, fast and angry polemic on the current state of affairs has turned out to be unfortunately prescient.” The KC based Punk Rock and Roll band, Red Kate has been rocking venues since 2007. In the review of their debut EP, The Pitch wrote, “Bassist and lead vocalist L. Ron Drunkard, (aka Shawn Saving) is a socialist activist by day, bellows like an Appalachian Roger Daltrey.”The band’s first full-length album, “When the Troubles Come” was released on Replay Records in 2013. Last year the band released their follow up full – length record, “unamerican activities,” on Kansas City’s coop record label, Black Site. [Krystle Warren was born June 13, 1981 in Kansas City, Missouri. She now lives in Paris. Krystle released the first single “Thanks and Praise” from her new album on May 22. She shared with us a few other tracks we could play. Last year in Krystle Warren premiered this song and her other new songs from this album at the Middle of the Map Fest in a packed room at Californos in Westport and later at The Polsky Theatre for the Performing arts Series of Johnsons County Community College. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and do all of the vocals and back up vocals. Krystle was on the show several times last year where she shared the inspirations for this record, early gospel recordings, that crossed over into Jazz fro Pharoah Sanders, Edwin Hawkins, The Swan Silvertones and more. Krystle Warren is originally from Kansas City. Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to The Beatles albums Rubber Soul and Revolver. Krystle Warren graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in Kansas City and collaborating with local jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and New York City, Krystle was signed to a French recording label, Because Music, and moved to Paris and released her album “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played numerous French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world, touring with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs: A Time you May Embrace” a recording from a 13 day session in Brooklyn, where she recorded 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections. [Produced, mixed and mastered by Kemet the Phantom who wrote about this recording, “Two years ago my uncle was turned up missing from his home in Chicago. My family would have never believed the news we received on April 11, 2017, the day before his birthday. We were informed that his DNA matched that of a body that was found shortly after he was reported missing. This is my attempt to grapple with the reality that I will never see my beloved and genius uncle again. Released just a month after the release of, The Invisible Man. Kemet The Phantom’s other full length release on Center of Attention Records. Kemet Coleman is Kemet the Phantom, a Kansas City based musicians who calls himself a rap Artist, actor, and Urbanist. Kemet is a member of the Hip-Hop duo COA (Center of Attention) and is the lead singer of the 8-member Funk/Rap/Soul band The Phantastics. Kemet, shines as a complete showman embracing a James Brown-esque persona via syncopated vocals, rhythmic dance moves and dapper costume style. Kemet the Phantom is a two time Pitch Music Award nominee for “Best Hip-Hop Act.” Kemet created the first ever Kansas City mayoral candidate rap song for the Sly James for Mayor campaign in 2010. A University of Missouri – Kansas City alumnus, Kemet, created “Gold and Blue” for UMKC’s sports teams, which has garnered thousands of plays on YouTube and has been featured on prime-time television commercials for the university. Lee on drums, and a guest appearance by Kevin M. Johnson on vocals. Hermon Mehari grew up in Jefferson City, Missouri, home of Lincoln University. He is a 2010 graduate of the University of Missouri – Kansas City Music Conservatory. In 2015 he finished first, at the prestigious Carmine Carusa International Jazz Trumpet Competition at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville Texas. Hermon was a semifinalist in the 2014 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. In 2014 he released the CD “Our Journey” with Diverse, which was recorded in Paris featuring Logan Richardson on alto saxophone. Hermon was also the winner of the 2008 National Trumpet Competiton and placed second in the International Trumpet Guild competition in Sydney, Australia. He splits his time between touring and playing all over the world and creative projects in Kansas City. Hermon has collaborated with Cat Mahari on BAM! the Workshop, he is also a founding member of Diverse Jazz, Diverse Trio, and The Buhs. During the 1950s–1970s he was the highest-paid entertainer in the world and embraced a lifestyle of flamboyant excess both on and off stage. [Jan. 29, 2013, Hawaii News Now reported that Jim Nabors married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, at Seattle, Washington’s Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Jan. 15, a month after same-sex marriage became legal in Washington. An urban legend maintains that Nabors married Rock Hudson in the early ’70s, shortly before Nabors began his relationship with Cadwallader. At least publicly, the two were never more than friends. According to Hudson, the legend originated with a group of “middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach” who sent out joke invitations for their annual get-together. One year, the group invited its members to witness “the marriage of Rock Hudson & Jim Nabors,” at which Hudson would take the surname of Nabors’ most famous character, Gomer Pyle, becoming “Rock Pyle.” Those who failed to get the joke spread the rumor. Hudson was also gay but closeted, and because of the fear that one or both of them might be outed, Nabors & Hudson never spoke to each other again.]

I think my parents had a tougher time hearing that I wanted to become a Theatre Major than when I told them I was Gay. Please know, that I believe the theatre is full of all sexual orientations, straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender…just like the rest of the world. The theatre, however, is Queer friendly, accepting of LGBTQIA, it has always been a place where so many gay kids found their freedom and identity. The theatre gave gay kids their first glimpse into a world not found in their sheltered, small towns. Here in this next set is a song from Noel Coward from a album I found in my college library my freshman year. The plays of Noel Coward were captivating to me, the lyrics, wit, and diction of Noel Coward in action, is a treat.

[Paul Lynde’s sexual orientation was an open secret in Hollywood, although, in keeping with the prejudices of the time, it was not acknowledged or discussed in public. In a 2013 radio interview, Dick Van Dyke recalled the wrap party for Bye Bye Birdie. A series of men gave short speeches, each one praising Ann-Margret and predicting success and stardom for the young actress. When it was Paul Lynde’s turn to speak, he began, “Well, I guess I’m the only one here who doesn’t want to fuck Ann-Margret.” In 1965, Lynde was involved in an accident in which a young actor, reputed to be his lover, fell to his death from the window of their hotel room in San Francisco’s Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The two had been drinking for hours before 24-year-old James “Bing” Davidson slipped and fell eight stories, an event witnessed by two policemen, yet the event was largely kept out of the press, thus saving Lynde’s career. Despite his campy television persona, Lynde never publicly came out as gay and the press generally refrained from commenting about it. In 1976, a People magazine article on Lynde featured him and Stan Finesmith; the latter was dubbed Lynde’s “suite mate” and “chauffeur-bodyguard.” In the 1970s, this was as close as the press would come to hinting at his sexuality.]

10:59 – 71th Annual Tony Awards

We heard Charles Nelson Reilly talking about his audition for “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” winner of The Tony Award for Best Musical in 1961. Charles Nelson Reilly would go on to star in the 1964, world premiere of “Hello Dolly,” written by gay composer Jerry Herman, who has won several Tony Awards for his musicals “Mame” and “La Cage Aux Folles.” This year “Hello Dolly” has been produced on Broadway, for the fifth time and starring Bette Midler in the title role.

One of the most diverse awards shows on television, has always been, The Annual Tony Awards, to recognize achievement in Broadway Theatre. The 71st Annual Tony Awards will take place on June 11. Hosted by Kevin Spacey, the ceremony will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York, and will be televised live on CBS.

For many Queer kids growing up in rural areas, this broadcast was the biggest night of LGBT programming. Shows like “Torch Song Trilogy,” “A Chorus Line,” “Avenue Q,” “La Cage Aux Folles,” “The Normal Heart,” “Rent,” “Angels in America,” “Kinky Boots,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” and “Hairspray,” are just some of the Broadway plays and musicals that tell the stories of LGBT people. The live television broadcast gave queer, theatre-nerds like me, a glimsp into the world where we could find ourselves.

On June 1982, on my 19th birthday, I remember watching television with my father as Harvey Fierstein won the Tony for Best Actor in a Play that he wrote called Torch Song Trilogy, about a gay drag-performer and his quest for true love and family. The play also won for Best Play, and I watched as producer John Glines as he made his historic Tony speech acknowledging his lover and co-producer, Larry Lane. It was a new world.

This year the 71st Annual Tony Awards will be honor nominees for Best Play: “A Doll’s House, Part 2,” starring Laurie Metcalf, Chris Cooper (who was born in Kansas City), and Jayne Houdyshell (who was born and raised in Topeka) all are nominated for Tony Awards; “Indecent,” written by Paula Vogel; “Oslo,” and the play “Sweat” which is also the winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. For Best Musical, the nominees are: “Come from Away,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Groundhog Day The Musical,” and “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812.”

For Best Revival of a Play, the nominees are: “August Wilson’s Jitney,” “Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes,” “Six Degrees of Separation,” and “Present Laughter” written by Noel Coward. And for Best Revival of a Musical, the nominees are: “Miss Saigon,” “Hello Dolly.” and “Falsettos” starring openly gay actor Andrew Rannells who was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and originated the role of Elder Price, in the musical “The Book of Morman,” and is nominated again this year, and is in the same category as another “Book Of Morman” veteran, openly gay actor Gavin Creel, for his role as Cornelius Hackl in Hello Dolly, a role originated by gay actor Charles Nelson Reilley, 52 years ago.

In celebration of the 2017 Tony Awards, we present a scene from Present Laughter, but not from the the 2017 production starring Kevin Kline, instead from the playwright himself Noel Coward, who wrote 38 plays, more than 300 songs, and multiple musicals, revues, and operettas. Present Laughter has been produced on Broadway four times and we’ll hear a scene from the play from a recording called, “Duologues” featuring actress Margaret Leighton, from 1957. From there, we will hear Christian Borle & Andrew Rannells, singing, “What Would I Do?” from “Falsettos,” followed by Kate Baldwin, Gavin Creel & 2017 Broadway Cast of “Hello, Dolly!” performing “It Only Takes a Moment.” All nominated for 2017 Tony Awards.

24. Noel Coward – “Present Laughter” [3 minute excerpt]

[Present Laughter is a comic play by Noël Coward in 1939, first staged in 1942. The plot follows a few days in the life of the successful and self-obsessed light comedy actor Garry Essendine as he prepares to travel for a touring commitment in Africa. Amid a series of events bordering on farce, Garry has to deal with women who want to seduce him, placate both his long-suffering secretary and his estranged wife, cope with a crazed young playwright, and overcome his impending mid-life crisis (since he has recently turned forty). The story was described by Coward as “a series of semi-autobiographical pyrotechnics.” In the 1970s Peter Hall wrote “what a wonderful play it would be if – as Coward must have wanted – all those love affairs were about homosexuals”. Whether or not Coward would have agreed, in the 1940s the transformation of real-life gay relationships into onstage straight ones was essential. The play nevertheless contains many references to Coward’s own life. Monica is “unmistakably Lorn Loraine”, Coward’s long-serving and much-loved secretary. Morris has been seen as Coward’s agent and sometime lover Jack Wilson, and Henry as Binkie Beaumont. Liz, played originally by Joyce Carey, is thought to be based partly on the actress herself, who was a member of Coward’s inner circle. During 1956, Coward abandoned Great Britain for tax reasons, becoming a permanent resident of Bermuda. He bought a chalet in Les Avants, Switzerland, in 1959, and that became his primary residence as of 1964, although he continued to live much of the time in Jamaica. Meanwhile, he returned to playwriting with two of his works, both billed as light comedies, playing in London: South Sea Bubble (April 25, 1956) and Nude with Violin (November 7, 1956). The latter also had a production on Broadway that Coward directed and starred in, his final appearance as an actor in New York. It opened November 14, 1957, and ran 80 performances, followed by a West Coast tour in 1958, during which it alternated with Present Laughter. Prior to that, however, Coward also had been “in New York,” as the title for a follow-up for Noel Coward at Las Vegas put it, recording the studio LP Noel Coward in New York in the fall of 1956 for release on Columbia in 1957. The same season, he and actress Margaret Leighton made spoken word recordings for Caedmon Records of scenes from his plays, plus the second act of The Apple Cart, in which they had appeared together in London in 1953. The LP Noël Coward & Margaret Leighton in Noël Coward Duologues, and after a 2nd recording session of Coward’s poetry in January 1958 came The Apple Cart & Poems by Noël Coward. In 2005, these recordings, along with other recordings of Coward’s writings performed by Simon Jones, were gathered together by Caedmon into the 5-CD set The Noel Coward Audio Collection.]

25. Christian Borle & Andrew Rannells – “What Would I Do?”

[Falsettos is a musical with a book by James Lapine and William Finn, and music and lyrics by Finn. The musical consists of March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland, the last two installments in one trio of one-act Off-Broadway musicals (the first was In Trousers). The story involves Marvin, his ex-wife Trina, his psychiatrist Mendel, his son Jason, his gay lover Whizzer Brown, and his neighbors Cordelia and Dr. Charlotte. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1992 and was nominated for seven Tony Awards, of which it won Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. It was revived briefly on Broadway in 2016, and this revival performance has been nominated for five Tony Awards. The 2016 production opened on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre on September 29, 2016 in previews, and officially on October 27, directed by Lapine. Christian Borle, Andrew Rannells, Stephanie J. Block and Brandon Uranowitz play Marvin, Whizzer, Trina, and Mendel respectively. Other cast includes Tracie Thoms as Dr. Charlotte, Betsy Wolfe as Cordelia, and Anthony Rosenthal as Jason. The production shuttered on January 8, 2017. Two performances were filmed on January 3 and 4, 2017, to be repackaged into a presentation for the PBS program Live from Lincoln Center series to be aired at a later date.]

26. Kate Baldwin, Gavin Creel & 2017 Broadway Cast of Hello, Dolly! – “It Only Takes a Moment”

[Hello, Dolly! is a 1964 musical with lyrics and music by Jerry Herman and a book by Michael Stewart, based on Thornton Wilder’s 1938 farce The Merchant of Yonkers, which Wilder revised and retitled The Matchmaker in 1955. Hello, Dolly! was first produced on Broadway by David Merrick in 1964, winning a record 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, a record held for 37 years. The show album Hello, Dolly! An Original Cast Recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002. The album reached number one on the Billboard album chart on June 6, 1964 and was replaced the next week by Louis Armstrong’s album Hello, Dolly! The show has become one of the most enduring musical theatre hits, with four Broadway revivals and international success. It was also made into the 1969 film Hello Dolly! that was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and won three. The role of Dolly Levi in the musical was originally written for Ethel Merman, but Merman turned it down, as did Mary Martin (although each eventually played it). Merrick then auditioned Nancy Walker. Eventually, he hired Carol Channing, who then created in Dolly her signature role. Director Gower Champion was not the producer’s first choice, as Hal Prince and others (among them Jerome Robbins and Joe Layton) all turned down the job of directing the musical. The musical, directed and choreographed by Gower Champion and produced by David Merrick, opened on January 16, 1964, at the St. James Theatre and closed on December 27, 1970, after 2,844 performances. Carol Channing starred as Dolly, with a supporting cast that included David Burns as Horace, Charles Nelson Reilly as Cornelius, Eileen Brennan as Irene, Jerry Dodge as Barnaby, Sondra Lee as Minnie Fay, Alice Playten as Ermengarde, and Igors Gavon as Ambrose. Although facing competition from Funny Girl with Barbra Streisand, Hello, Dolly! swept the Tony Awards that year, winning awards in ten categories (out of eleven nominations) that tied the musical with the previous record keeper South Pacific, a record that remained unbroken for 37 years until The Producers won twelve Tonys in 2001. After Channing left the show, Merrick employed a string of prominent actresses to play Dolly, including Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey (in an all-black version with Cab Calloway, Mabel King, Clifton Davis, Ernestine Jackson and a young Morgan Freeman), Phyllis Diller, and Ethel Merman after having turned down the lead at the show’s inception. Two songs cut prior to the opening — typical Mermanesque belt style songs “World, Take Me Back” and “Love, Look in My Window” — were restored for her run. On January 19, 2016, it was announced that Bette Midler would play the title role in a Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!. Previews began March 15, 2017, with an opening date of April 20, 2017, at the Shubert Theatre.[23][24] This production is scheduled for a ten month run with the final performance to be that of 14 January 2018. The production is produced by Scott Rudin, directed by Jerry Zaks and choreographed by Warren Carlyle. David Hyde Pierce plays Horace Vandergelder. Other principal casting for this revival includes: Kate Baldwin as Irene Molloy, Gavin Creel as Cornelius Hackl, Jennifer Simard as Ernestina Money, Taylor Trensch as Barnaby Tucker, Will Burton as Ambrose Kemper, Melanie Moore as Ermengarde, and[27] Beanie Feldstein as Minnie Fay. Donna Murphy will play the role of Dolly at the Tuesday evening performances beginning in June 2017.]

[ANOHNI is formerly known as Antony Hegarty or Antony, an English-born American singer, composer, and visual artist. She is best known as the lead singer of the band Antony and the Johnsons. Anohni was born in 1970 in the city of Chichester, England. Her family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1981. In 1990, she moved to Manhattan, to study at New York University, where she founded the performance art collective Blacklips with Johanna Constantine. Entering a musical career, she began performing with an ensemble of NYC musicians as Antony and the Johnsons. Their 1st album, Antony and the Johnsons, was released in 2000 on David Tibet’s label Durtro. Their 2nd album, I Am a Bird Now (2005), was a commercial and critical success, earning Anohni the Mercury Music Prize. In 2016, Anohni became the 2nd openly transgender person nominated for an Academy Award; she was nominated for Best Original Song, along with J. Ralph, for the song “Manta Ray” in the film Racing Extinction. HOPELESSNESS, is a dance record with soulful vocals & lyrics addressing surveillance, drone warfare, and ecocide. A radical departure from the singer’s symphonic collaborations, the album seeks to disrupt assumptions about popular music through the collision of electronic sound and highly politicized lyrics. 31. David Bowie – “Rebel Rebel”

[Recorded November 22-23, 2003, Point Theatre, Dublin, Ireland. Originally written for a mooted Ziggy Stardust musical in late 1973, “Rebel Rebel” was Bowie’s last single in the glam rock style that had been his trademark. The song is notable for its gender-bending lyrics (“You got your mother in a whirl / She’s not sure if you’re a boy or a girl”) as well as its distinctive riff, which rock journalist Kris Needs has described as “a classic stick-in-the-head like the Stones’ ‘Satisfaction'”.Transsexual rock artist and former Bowie associate Jayne County claims that “Rebel Rebel” was based in part on County’s own song “Queenage Baby”, which was recorded in January 1974 by Bowie’s Mainman Records, but not released at the time. The song later surfaced on the independent 2006 release Wayne County at the Trucks, and some critics, upon hearing the track, echoed County’s claims. The 2004, live version features David Bowie – vocals, guitars, stylophone, harmonica; Earl Slick – guitar; Gerry Leonard – guitar; Gail Ann Dorsey – bass guitar, backing vocals, lead vocals on “Under Pressure”; Sterling Campbell – drums; Mike Garson – keyboards, piano; Catherine Russell – keyboards, percussion, acoustic guitar, backing vocals. The tour grossed $46,000,000, making it the ninth-highest grossing tour of 2004. At over 110 shows, the tour was the longest tour of Bowie’s career. [Dedicated to the memory of Andy Warhol, their mentor, who had died unexpectedly in 1987. Drella was a nickname for Warhol coined by Warhol Superstar Ondine, a contraction of Dracula and Cinderella, used by Warhol’s crowd. The song cycle focuses on Warhol’s interpersonal relations and experiences, with songs falling roughly into three categories: Warhol’s first-person perspective (which makes up the vast majority of the album), third-person narratives chronicling events and affairs, and first-person commentaries on Warhol by Reed and Cale themselves. The songs on the album are, to some extent, in chronological order.]

Last May, Mark joined us to share music from the Pembroke Hill Glee Club from 1968, music from DMZ, the Boston based punk band, and music from the KC Chorale in Kirkwood Hall. Mark Titus joined us to share stories for his journeys, and musical performances from the past 25 years.

Mark Titus has been involved in the video industry for more than 20 years. What started as videotaping family events led to the creation of Titus Video in 1985. Gradually Mark has expanded his focus to include performance art archiving, training videos, coach and highlight DVDs for high school, college, and professional sports. [We first met The Clementines as a duo Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer when they played LIVE on our April 25 show. Since then they’ve added Stephanie Williams on Drums, and Travis Earndshaw on Bass. Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO, and studied Special Education with Music at Metropolitan MO CC, in KCMO. Nicole told The Pitch (Jan. 10, 2012 article): “I grew up singing in gospel choirs,” she says. “And I still love gospel music, though I’m not religious or anything. I did musicals throughout high school, and I went to school for a year at Missouri State for music education. But I’ve never been in a committed band before this one.” Nicole told David Hudnall of The Pitch: that her vision for the Clementines was initially inspired by the Irish folk duo the Swell Season. “I had just seen them in concert before I put up that ad,” Springer says. “They’re just so passionate, and I wanted to do something that had that much soul in it. It’s the same reason I like Aretha or the Gossip.” Tim Jenkins grew up in KC. Studied at UMKC. He has been playing music for over 10 years. An array of floaty textures and chanty vocal harmonies combine with a set of elctronic inspired tribal percussion, to create a synth driven psychadelic soudscape written with pop sensability. Their debut LP ‘In Limbo’ (set for release Aug 28 on Carpark Records) was mixed/produced by Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3), and recorded in Teeny’s childhood friend/former bandmate Maia Ibar’s family barn in rural Connecticut.]

The KC acoustic indie rock trio, Clover Noir are the second band we’ve presented this year that was formed with the help of Craigslist. Ben who writes the bands songs decided to post an ad for collaborating musicians on Craiglist where he met Shylette who brought her improvisational violin playing to compliment Ben’s tunes. With Ben’s encouragement, Shylette brought in a Natasha and the trio was formed. Clover Noir join us to play LIVE in our 90.1 FM Studios. Fresh from their KC Fringe Theatre performances the band is currently getting ready to release their debut full length recording. Clover Noir includes: Ben Rekittke on guitar and lead vocal; Shylette Carson on violin and backup vocals; and Natasha Derakhshanian on violin and backup vocals.

Natasha discussed the orchestra and the new scholarship/mentoring program she has created that will give instruments to students who actively participate in the orchestra. On Monday, August 27, we lost a good friend, and writer, Tom Ryan, who reached out to so many of us through his kind and thoughtful words, and keen observations. Tom was one of those special people who took the time to connect with so many and offer collaboration and guidance. A veteran of the US Military, Tom lived all over the United States and all over the world, including: Australia, Japan, Nigeria, Ireland.

In Kansas City Tom was the creator o Words For Art, where he wrote about artists and art. Tom also wrote two other blogs, he was working on a play, he was a poet, essayist, he wrote screenplays, columns, and stories. Tom was full of ideas and through the last three years, he identified with so many with his amazing brain and sensitive demeanor.

We closed the show with a new song that musician Jason Beers was saving for his new banjo CD. Jason wrote that it was, “Kind of a dream to have Tom Ryan and Betse Ellis record with me.”

We also played a track from Elaine McMilian’s 2011 release, “The Messenger” which includes a song she co-wrote with Tom Ryan called “Lullaby (For Girls).”

Tom always took the time to connect, and we feel his absence, and we will give extra love and attention to our dear friend Elaine McMilian, who we hold in our hearts at this difficult time. Love and peace to you all.
