[Produced with Grammy-winner Nathan Chapman at iconic Blackbird Studios in Nashville. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear have garnered international acclaim, and new fans from all over the world. They signed with Glassnote Records and recorded their debut full length album in Nashville with acclaimed producer Jim Abiss. They performed their debut single “Silent Movies” on The Late Show with David Letterman, they’ve toured across the United States, and Europe, more than once. They were featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NBC’s The Today Show, and “Later With Jools Holland and played Bonnaroo, Pilgramage, and the Newport Folk Festival, and the Ryman Theatre, in Nashville. Ruth Ward has continually performed throughout her life, mostly in coffee shops and open mics, for over 30 years, even recording a solo record. In the midst of this she got married and became a mom, and was busy raising a family. Madisen Ward was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother, where Madisen grew up watching his mom perform at local coffee shops. Eventually he began to learn to play the guitar, and poured his talent for writing into the music to create original songs. They began playing Madisen’s original songs along with the occassional cover of a classic track reinterpreted in their own incredibly beautiful performance of two voices and two guitars in harmony and orchestration. Their debut album, The Skeleton Crew, was released May 9, 2015 and was our most played record that year and was #1 on WMM’s The 115 Best Recordings of 2015. 4. Black Belt Eagle Scout – “Scorpio Moon”

[Released in September of 2018, Mother of My Children was the debut album from Black Belt Eagle Scout, the recording project of Katherine Paul. Heralded as a favorite new musician of 2018 by the likes of NPR Music, Stereogum, and Paste, the album was also named as a “Best Rock Album of 2018” by Pitchfork, and garnered further end-of-year praise from FADER, Under The Radar and more. // Arriving just a year after that debut record, At the Party With My Brown Friends is a brand new full-length recording from Black Belt Eagle Scout. Where that first record was a snapshot of loss and landscape and of KP’s standing as a radical indigenous queer feminist, this new chapter finds its power in love, desire and friendship. // At the Party With My Brown Friends is a profound and understated forward step. The squalling guitar anthems that shaped its predecessor are replaced by delicate vocals and soft keys, sentiments spoken and unspoken, presenting something shadowy and unsettling; a stirring of the waters. // The end result presents a captivating about-face that redefines KP’s beautifully singular artistic vision. At the Party With My Brown Friends is introduced in greater detail here via a new statement by the artist. // ARTIST’S STATEMENT: My name is Katherine Paul and I am Black Belt Eagle Scout. // I grew up on the Swinomish Indian Reservation in NW Washington state, learning to play piano, guitar and drums in my adolescent years. The very first form of music that I can remember experiencing was the sound of my dad singing native chants to coo me to sleep as a baby. I grew up around powwows and the songs my grandfather and grandmother sang with my family in their drum group. This is what shapes how I create music: with passion and from the heart. // After the release of Mother of My Children, I felt awake and desperately wanted to put new music out into the world. I had no real intent behind At the Party With My Brown Friends except creating songs around what was going on in my life. In the past few years, the reciprocal love I experienced within friendships is what has been keeping me going. A lot of what is in this album deals with love, desire and friendship. // The lead single, “At the Party,” starts off with a quintessential BBES guitar lick, heading into booming and abundant drums and vocals. The lines ‘How is it real? We will always sing’ came out of me one evening when I was crafting the song in my bedroom. Within my conscious self, there is always a sense of questioning the legitimacy of the world when you grow up on an Indian reservation. We are all at the party (the world), trying to navigate ourselves within a good or bad situation. I happen to be at the party with my brown friends- Indigenous, Black, POC who always have my back while we walk throughout this event called life. // I started writing “My Heart Dreams” the summer after I initially put out MOMC, writing the guitar chords in a friend’s apartment on Ohlone land. I had been in a transitional part of my life, leaving one love and wanting to find another so much so that I felt like my heart was dreaming about it along with my brain at night. I have an obsession with dreams, mainly because I cannot remember most of mine and often times that leaves me frustrated not knowing that part of myself. I would wake up and be overcome with anxiety about not knowing what had gone down in my brain so much so that I started feeling like my heart dreamt more than my mind, thus becoming the line, my heart dreams. // I wrote “Going To The Beach With Haley” one day when I was out on a coastal trip with my friend Haley Heynderickx. We loaded up her car with our blankets and instruments and drove straight to a beach where we sat and listened to the waves and young families with their babies on the beach. I had brought my mini casio keyboard that had an array of beats I used when writing songs. The beat that’s on the song just stuck there along with the main guitar part. Initially written on an old acoustic guitar my mom bought me, the song really transformed in the studio where I added drums and other melodies to create the song. // Throughout the course of my writing and playing around this record, most of these songs deal with relationships I have either with loved ones or friends. I think it low key has to do with my anthropology degree, but also the fact that writing and playing guitar in my bedroom just makes everything feel better for me. For the longest time, I wanted to convey my feelings around coming out to my family. It had been a good experience for me and while I know it is not always that way when kids decide to tell their family, I think that we can open our hearts more for that. I would watch youtube videos of moms being proud of their kids surrounding their sexuality and gender identity and I really wanted to raise my voice to say, ‘my family too!’ What started with trying to sound so literal in this song ended up turning into a song about how much I love my mom and how our connection is eternal. “You’re Me and I’m You” is about being one with your mother, since we all were a part of their bodies at one point. It’s me trying to explore who she is and who I am with my love for people.]

5. Hand Habits – “can’t calm down”

[Meg Duffy grew up in a small town in Upstate New York and they cut their teeth as a session guitarist and touring member of Kevin Morby’s band. The Hand Habits project emerged after Meg moved to Los Angeles; it started as a private songwriting outlet but soon evolved into a fully-fledged band with Meg at the helm. Hand Habits’ debut album, Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void), was released by Woodsist Records in 2017. The LP was entirely self-produced and recorded in Meg’s home during spare moments when they weren’t touring. Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void) is a lush, homespun collection of folk songs that found Meg in an exploratory state as an artist moving out on their own for the first time. Two years later, Hand Habits has returned with their sophomore album, placeholder. To make this album, Meg chose to work in a studio and bring in collaborators, entrusting them with what had previously been a very personal creative process. Over the course of 12 tracks, Meg emerges with new confidence as both a bandleader and singer. This album is as tender and immediate as anything Meg’s ever written, but it’s also intensely focused and refined, the work of a meticulous musician ready to share their singular vision with the world. The name placeholder stems from Meg’s fascination with the undefinable. Their songs serve as openings — carved-out spaces waiting to be endowed with meaning. As a lyricist, Meg is drawn to the in-between, and the songs on this new album primarily confront the ways in which certain experiences can serve as a stepping stone on the road to self-discovery. “A big aspect of my songwriting and the way I move through the world depends on my relationships with people. The songs on placeholder are about accountability and forgiveness,” Meg says. “These are all real stories. I don’t fictionalize much.” Meg describes these songs as their most direct to date, crafted with clear intention, and unlike Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void), placeholder doesn’t meander. “It’s less of a submerged landscape and more a concise series of thoughts,” Meg explains. Instrumentally, placeholder can be situated alongside some of Meg’s folk-adjacent contemporaries like Angel Olsen or Big Thief, and the guitar work on this album proves that Meg continues to be one of the finest young musicians working today. placeholder is another entry in the Hand Habits songbook, but it’s also a valuable testament of our time. While placeholder inspires a sense of ease, simple questions rarely beget easy answers and Meg honors the indescribable joy and profound sorrow that comes with figuring things out, one step at a time.]

6. Bon Iver – “Hey, Ma”

[Bon Iver is an American indie folk band founded in 2006 by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. Vernon released Bon Iver’s debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago, independently in July 2007. The majority of that album was recorded while Vernon spent three months isolated in a cabin in northwestern Wisconsin. The band later won in 2012 the Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album for their album Bon Iver, Bon Iver. They released their third album 22, A Million to critical acclaim in 2016, which was followed by their fourth album i,i in 2019.The name “Bon Iver” derives from the French phrase bon hiver (French pronunciation: ​[bɔn‿ivɛːʁ]) (“good winter”), taken from a greeting on Northern Exposure.]

7. Calvin Arsenia – “Back To You (Paul Brown Mix)”

[1st single from L.A. Sessions released August 16. Produced by Tony Braunagel (he also delivers exquisite percussion on LA Sessions) with Paul Brown on guitar, Mike Finnigan on keyboards, Freddie Washington on bass, and David Garfield on piano. Between them, the five musicians have worked with some of music’s most iconic names, including Jimi Hendrix, George Benson, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Leonard Cohen, Bonnie Raitt, Chuck Loeb, Rickie Lee Jones, Buddy Guy, The Neville Brothers From Center Cut Record Press Release: “It was a thrill for me to work with such legendary players,” says Calvin. “Not only were they incredibly talented, but I got off a plane straight from Australia, hit the studio, and they were more than ready to get to that place where you honor the songs, leaving their egos at the door and honoring what the muses tell them. It was one of the best recording experiences I ever had.” Calvin’s production M.O. on previous recordings was to piece together songs “like pieces of a puzzle” and “layer them over several sessions.” He believes the immediacy of the LA Sessions, and having the instrumentation all happening in the “same emotional space together as a band,” powerfully served the intimacy of the album, particularly on the reflective “Back To You.” “It’s one of the most vulnerable songs on the album, and it always plays that way in my live set, and the guys were able to help me capture that,” he says. “The song is a very heartfelt admission of guilt, I think. But it’s done in a way people usually don’t want to talk about. Breakup songs are usually angry and lashing out and this is a very sober-minded take on it. It’s not something we usually want to admit, surrendering or admitting defeat in a relationship, because everyone thinks you’re always going to make it through, and this is saying ‘no we didn’t…but it’s OK.’” Born in Orlando, Florida, his creative journey really began when he moved to the KC suburb of Olathe, teaching himself the guitar, and eventually the harp. He learned his signature instrument at the age of 20 after he couldn’t find a harpist as determined as him to meld folk, rock, classical, rap and R&B into the irresistible fusion which has become his calling card in the Kansas City music scene and beyond. His passion for stretching the boundaries of musical expression saw him transform a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland’s Fringe Festival early in his career into a life-changing music mission, with an Edinburgh church offering him a role as musical liaison between the church and the city that would change his life. Two years and 300 shows later, Calvin returned to Kansas City reborn as a humanistic songwriter/performer whose impassioned and conceptual stage shows (regularly sold-out in Kansas City, currently catching fire on the West Coast with a diverse following across Europe), are collaborative, costumed-culture-bridging spectacles which In KC Magazine has hailed as ‘equal parts opera, symphony, musical theatre, rock show, all built around its creator: a charismatic 6-foot-7-inch harpist with a natural stage command and knack for gilding gold and painting lilies.’ Calvin’s 2018 national debut, Cantaloupe (Center Cut Records), has been acclaimed for melding diverse textures into an alluring signature sound for the adventurous artist. Most recently, Calvin performed live at L.A.’s The Mint, showcasing the songs on LA Sessions with the musicians who collaborated with him on the album. Says Calvin: “It’s such a special experience to play with them. To be able to perform these songs in front of an audience and do this for a living – to have made a career out of something I love is so amazing – it is an honor that I never take for granted.” On September 15, 2018 Calvin released Cantaloupe on Center Cut Records. Calvin released Honeydew on June 28, an EP including a remix of three of the songs from Cantaloupe.]

Dwight Frizzell is a Professor at KCAI, and is an internationally recognized artist whose work combines video, performance, installation, music, audio art, and writing. Frizzell’s work about his boyhood neighbor, Harry S. Truman, was featured in the Peabody-awarded “Lost and Found Sound” series broadcast on National Public Radio. Frizzell has produced an opera based on the life of Charles Darwin. In addition to his B.F.A. degree from KCAI, he holds a terminal fine arts degree in Sound Design from the UMKC. Dwight Frizzell, is a founder of the “groovy polyphonic jazz/dance” band, Black Crack Revue, now in their 37th year. Dwight Frizzell is also a founding member of the newEar contemporary chamber ensemble, and is host & producer of “From Arc To Microchip” heard Wednesdays at 11:30 PM on 90.1 FM.

Also with us is Leo Wetherill, who has been supporting artists, creating venues, and producing performance and musical productions in Kansas City since the late 1980s. He is one of the founders of the Human Observation Lab, and early pioneer space in downtown Kansas City offering performance art space for the early concerts of The Cocktails, and early productions of Gorilla Theatre, Eyes Wide Open, nationally recognized visual artist and DJ Nick Cave, and many other area bands and and performance groups and DJs.

Last time Dwight & Leo were on the show was on June 12 just prior to their midday Solstice concert-June 21, at KC Art Institute’s Vanderslice Reception Patio (behind historically restored Vanderslice Hall), 4415 Warwick Blvd., KC, MO. Heliophonie (Sun Sound) was performed in-sync to the sun’s harmonic tones. The solar sphere oscillates like a bell ringing every 4 minutes 48 seconds (as heard on a large gong). Overtones pulse in quadra-pole rotation (realized by the instruments & electronics). Solar storms moving vigorously through the resonating convection-zone are performed by instrumental duets.

“Bridges are expressions of our social-spiritual evolution and impulse toward transcendence.” –Rev. Dwight Frizzell

Bridges are living, resonant beings activated by our crossing formidable passageways now made passé. Crossing Liberty Bend Bridge, our concert’s featured instrument, takes a mere 14 seconds. We invite you to hang with the bridge a moment longer, entertain its own perspective, listen inside its metal structure, and hear its rhythms and singing tones as recorded and mixed by Dwight Frizzell with live performance engineer Leo Wetherill. The bridge’s harmonic sound world is joined and orchestrated by an ensemble of Tibetan Singing Bowls directed by Steve Donofrio, Balinese gamelan instruments directed by Patrick Conway, long-hose zwoomists and Bill Dye’s lap steel guitar solo.

The sonorous Missouri River bridge at Highway 291 in Sugar Creek is a magnificent traffic-activated instrument expressing a flow of people, materials, animals and plants. Its voice, animated by us humans and full of percussive and harmonic sound, is intimately heard by nestling an ear on its metal understructure (or attaching contact microphones as heard here to map the sound spatially to the performance space with the audience inside the bridge’s singing form.

Liberty Bend Bridge is actually two continuous truss bridges on Highway 291 over the Missouri River in Sugar Creek. It is the rare example of a bridge crossing the Missouri River, but not crossing a county line. The Missouri River was rerouted in 1949, leaving part of the county north of the river. The original Liberty Bend Bridge was located about two miles to the north, which then crossed over into Clay County. The main span length is 460.1 feet and the total length is 1,883.3 feet. Vertical clearance is 16.5 feet.

INTRODUCING LIBERTY BEND BRIDGE: Ron Achelpohl is the Director of Transportation and Environment at the Mid-America Regional Council, the council of governments and metropolitan planning organization for the bi-state Kansas City metropolitan area. Ron directs MARC’s transportation and environmental planning and policy work along with related implementation activities such as the Operation Green Light traffic signal coordination system, the RideShare program and public education initiatives for air quality, water quality, active transportation and transportation safety. Prior to serving in his current role, Ron was an Assistant Director of Transportation at MARC, and before that held positions with the Missouri Department of Transportation. Ron is a registered Professional Engineer with degrees in civil engineering from the University of Missouri and engineering management from the University of Kansas. He is an active member of the American Public Works Association and serves on the boards of several local non-profit organizations.

RON ACHAPOHL’S INTRODUCTION: “As alluded to, I think all bridges are poetic, but I’m not. So, I’m going to set the context for the bridge with a few facts and figures about how it fits into the transportation system in the greater Kansas City area, which is kind of my area of expertise. I’ll start by pointing out that this is one of 3599 bridges in the eight county area that we do transportation planning in. It’s one of only 10 bridges though – highway bridges – that cross the Missouri River. The farthest one in the metro area is up in Leavenworth at Route 92, and as you go down the river there are nine other crossings until you get to the Liberty Bend Bridge. The next crossing to the east is in Lexington, Missouri it’s on Route 13, which coincidentally, is about a 40 minute drive from this bridge – about as long as this piece will be this evening. The bridge, it’s purpose is carrying people and vehicles and goods across the river and it carries – the most recent stats we got about that are that it carries about 23,000 vehicles a day across the bridge and the occupancy rate for people in the Kansas City area, that translates to a little over 24,000 people a day that use the bridge. To put that perspective, there are over 100,000 vehicles that use the Kit-Bond Bridge on I-35 across the river, and about 40,000 vehicles a day on the Buck O’Neil Bridge, that is, the old Broadway Bridge across the Missouri River. The original crossing was built back in 1927, and it crossed at where the Clay County-Jackson Country line is now. The river channel was actually moved to the south, so the bridge that is there now is a twin-span, the northbound span was the first one that was constructed, and it was originally built back in 1949, it was rehabbed in 1986, and it was replaced in 2005. The southbound bridge was built new and added the pairing in 2001. It carries Missouri Route 291, which runs from the city of Liberty south to the city of Harrisonville, it crosses through three different counties and seven different cities. So, it’s an important regional connector; it doesn’t have the most traffic in the region, but it really serves an important purpose. I’m really excited to be a part of the piece this evening, I think it’s always helpful to draw attention to the invisible infrastructure that the community relies on.”

INTRODUCING TIBETAN SINGING BOWLS: Steve Donofrio has been a Free-lance Audio Engineer & Technical Consultant for the past 38 years. He is a founding member of the National Audio Theatre Festivals and served as Technical Coordinator for Midwest Radio Theatre Workshop for 10 years and its Executive Director for three. As a member of The Deli Llama Orchestra, Steve has played Tibetan Singing Bowls for over 30 years, as featured on numerous studio and live recordings from LA to Katmandu, Nepal. Steve is an avid collector of Tibetan Singing Bowls, using them as implements of music and for meditative and tonal healing. Steve has worked on many musical projects as a producer, recoding & mixing engineer, and audio artist. Currently he works at the Columbia Public Library as a technical support specialist and lives in rural Missouri with his wife, two dogs, and a charm of 1000 hummingbirds.

INTRODUCING THE BRIDGE SOUNDSCAPE: Dwight Frizzell is an internationally recognized artist/soundscape composer who began recording environments and playing with their acoustic imprints early on — a practice he calls Turtle Music — as heard on his 1976 LP Beyond the Black Crack. The complexities of place were fore-fronted in Dwight’s Peabody-awarded Center of the World (1997), which features his childhood neighbor Harry S. Truman at the shopping center that leveled the beloved Truman family farm in 1957. Recently, Frizzell was panel moderator for Sounding Sculptural Space at the International Sculpture Conference with composer Robert Carl and long-string instrumentalist Ellen Fullman. Dwight’s teachers included Sun Ra and Douglas Davis. He earned a terminal degree in Sound Design for Theatre at UMKC, and is currently Professor in Converging Media at KCAI.

He has been producing the “From Ark to Microchip” series with Jay Mandeville since 1984. Ark radio has been heard on KOPN, KCUR, KGNU, RESONANCE FM (London), RADIO NOVA (Paris), and WKCR (New York).

Dwight’s boyhood neighbor in Independence, Missouri was Harry S. Truman, who appears in Dwight’s work as a pianist, Atlantean King and time-traveler. Dwight released the “Beyond the Black Crack” LP in 1976, studied video art with Douglas Davis (1977), clarinet with Raymond Luedeke (1979) and metaphysics with Sun Ra (1980-1990). His work was exhibited at Biennale de Paris, World-Wide Video Festival (Amsterdam), and broadcast on NPR.

Dwight’s collaborative third-mind creations with writer Jay Mandeville includes plays, essays, and Ark scripts. Their work was published in “Semiotext(e) Radiotext(e)” and “Experimental Sound and Radio” (MIT Press). They edited The Pitch newspaper in the early ‘80s.

Dwight’s music is available on Paradigm discs (England). He plays Buffet clarinets and Yamaha saxophones and wind controllers. His collaborations with Michael Henry include “Sonic Force,” where AFR A10 Warthog Attack Planes were used as musical instruments. Frizzell is a founding member of the Black Crack Revue, the newEar contemporary chamber ensemble, and the National Audio Theatre Festivals. He performed recently with David Ossman and Phil Proctor of the Firesign Theatre.

Fathers released the 4 song EP High Horses on March 1, 2019 and now 6 months later has this new single out.

Bryce Veazey was recently on stage for the Crossroads Music Fest playing with Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear on Saturday night on the KC Crossroads stage.

Six months and many coffee-fueled discussions later, I’m so privileged to announce this performance. The creative process between Jen, Eddie Moore, Brian Steever and Jason Emmond has been absolutely mind blowing.”

This event includes the jazz accompaniment of “The Fellas,” renowned musicians Eddie Moore (keys), Jason Emmond (bass) and Brian Steever (drums), bringing Jen’s performance to sonic life.

Unconfirmed Certainties “is the intersection of suspicion and intuition” and follows Harris’ year-long exploration, documentation and in-process recovery from flashbacks, suicidal ideation and a significant mental breakdown following a devastating, unexpected public breakup and facing, head-on, a C-PTSD diagnosis.

An outspoken advocate for an accessible mental health system, Harris was relieved to finally put a name to symptoms she had experienced since her early teens. She fought for decades to overturn the misdiagnosis of Bipolar II disorder, which she was given around age 15 as a way to “medicate away her queerness and creative spirit.” Due to the limitations set upon her by the current health care system, this endeavor took Harris nearly 20 years to accomplish.

As the public has come to know from her career, Harris spares no one’s feelings or privacy in her searing truth-telling performance.

Third Man Records is excited to release the newest songs from Austin, TX’s Ghost Wolves. Formed in 2011 and hardly taking time to sit since then, the Ghost Wolves create, record and tour at a rapid clip. Blending rock n’ roll, punk rock, garage and blues with electronic elements, the duo has earned a reputation as one of the hardest working bands in the modern rock n’ roll underground, touring internationally for almost 8 years straight, with nearly 1000 shows between them in 23+ countries including most of western Europe, the USA, U.K. and Japan. The duo recorded these three new tracks in early 2019 with engineer/producer John Michael Schoepf (bassist for Ray Wylie Hubbard, Night Glitter) in his Austin living room studio. The recording took place during a very dark time for Carley and Jonny, who have been married for 7 years. Jonny’s father received a terminal cancer diagnosis in late 2018. These songs came together while Jonny was tending to his father in Connecticut, with Carley sending demo songs to him from Texas. When his father stabilized somewhat, Jonny returned to Austin to take a break and they both therapeutically recorded these songs. As can be heard, these recordings are darker, more intimate and more pressing than previous material. Produced by John Michael Schoepf and The Ghost Wolves. Engineered by John Michael Schoepf. 3. The Bevis Frond – “Lead On

[26th studio album from The Bevis Frond, a British musical group whose range covers hard edge to melancholy vintage indie rock to poetic, “classic-rock” songcraft. Nick Saloman is the band’s frontman and songwriter. They have recorded many singles and albums on various independent labels since 1987. Saloman was originally in a band known as the Bevis Frond Museum in the late 1960s, and in the 1970s, whilst at college, he played guitar with a duo called Oddsocks. They released one album, Men of the Moment. In 1979 he formed a band called the Von Trap Family, who released the first single on his own Woronzow Records label. The early Von Trap Family recordings, comprising three sessions, were released on the Bevis Frond Bandcamp site for the first time in May 2010. The next release on Woronzow was in 1982, a 12″ single by Room 13 with Saloman on guitar and future Bevis Frond drummer Martin Crowley. After Room 13 reached the end of its natural life, Nick Saloman had a bad motorbike accident that left him with a constriction of movement in his left arm. True to form, he had the arm set so that he could continue playing guitar. With the proceeds from a damages claim he bought a 4 track recorder and recorded some music which he decided to press as a limited release of 250 albums, more for the sake of just releasing an album than anything else. He was very surprised when Funhouse records in Kent phoned him up and asked for a couple of hundred copies as they’d been selling the album quite briskly. Saloman’s desire was to “record the kind of music I’d like to listen to… I wanted a Hendrix/Wipers/Byrds sound but with a distinctly British feel.” Subsequent albums were also recorded in a home studio and released on Woronzow until 1988, when he signed a deal with Reckless Records for the UK and USA. All the early albums were finally re-released on CD and Reckless financed the recording and release of his sixth album, Any Gas Faster, using a professional studio for the first time, reuniting him with Drummer Martin Crowley. This is also the point that he began touring. Another 1990 album, Magic Eye, was a collaboration with Twink of the Pink Fairies. In 1990, he returned to the studio to record his next album, New River Head, which featured guest musicians including Barry Dransfield and David Tibet. The next year he recorded London Stone, but Reckless were less than happy with the album, and in the ensuing friction, Saloman decided to release the album on Woronzow again. All his subsequent albums have appeared on Woronzow.]

4. Baxter Dury, Delilah Holliday & Etienne de Crécy – “Walk Away”

[Debut recordings of collaborative trio of French producer Etienne de Crécy on electronic textures, with vocalist Baxter Dury’s and singer Delilah Holliday (of London band Skinny Girl Diet). Baxter Dury told the press, “Etienne has created a musical background for my confessional narrative and Delilah has encouraged it to be something more emotional. It’s an unlikely mix that works because its short, simple and honest.”]

5. Big Wild – “6’s to 9’s (feat. Rationale)”

[Debut album from Big Wild who is Jackson Stell, an electronic DJ, producer, composer, and engineer. Stell was born in Lancaster, Massachusetts. Stell set out on his own tour in Spring 2017, hitting 27 dates around America. Rational is Matthew Cameron Brotzel, a Canadian hip-hop artist from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. On March 30, 2010, RationaL released his debut single “Cocaine Cowboy” from his debut album, The BirthWrite LP. The song garnered a 2010 Sphere of Hip-Hop award for “Song of the Year”, co-winning the honor alongside 2011 Juno Award winner and fellow Canadian rapper, Shad (“Rose Garden”). July 17, 2012 the rapper released The BirthWrite LP under his own independent imprint, Ear RationaL Music. The album featured guest appearances from Quannum Projects recording artist Pigeon John, former Rawkus Records artist and member of The Procussions, Mr. J. Medeiros, Relic, Theory Hazit and Ohmega Watts. In the fall of 2007, RationaL began the writing and recording process for his debut album, The BirthWrite LP. The album charted as high as #2 on the !earshot hip-hop charts. Although The BirthWrite LP is officially considered RationaL’s debut album, there was a free promotional album released on July 20, 2010 entitled Hard Labor: The BirthWrite Prequel that circulated locally and was made available online. The BirthWrite LP is most notable for the award-winning lead single “Cocaine Cowboy”. On July 23, 2013, RationaL reached an exclusive agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays and Major League Baseball to release his new single, “A Swing and a Belt”, dedicated to the late Hall of Fame voice of the Blue Jays, Tom Cheek. Cheek called a Major League record 4,306 consecutive games for 28 straight seasons on the Toronto Blue Jays Radio Network from April 7, 1977 to June 2, 2004. Produced by Imperial, “A Swing and a Belt” received high-praise from former World Series hero Joe Carter. Former Jays manager and current Sportsnet play-by-play man Buck Martinez also raved about the song. Martinez stated, “RationaL has captured everything that Tom Cheek was in regards to baseball. He had his passion, he understood his love of the game, he understood all the great moments in Tom Cheek’s broadcasting career. He weaves them into “A Swing and a Belt” in such a way that it brings back so many memories for fans, baseball people and media people that really captures the essence of Tom Cheek’s career with the Blue Jays. I don’t think it could have been done any better.”[citation needed] In addition, Sportsnet aired a clip of the song during the Blue Jays game versus the Houston Astros on July 27, 2013. “A Swing and a Belt” is also the lead single from RationaL’s upcoming album entitled Hell or High Water, scheduled for release soon on Ear RationaL Music. Confirmed collaborators for the record thus far include Mr. J. Medeiros, Factor, Imperial, Josh Palmer and Juno Award-winning producer and emcee, Relic.]

6. Kristen Hersh – “Lax”

[The 11th solo album from Martha Kristin Hersh was born August 7, 1966, in Atlanta, Georgia. She moved to Newport, Rhode Island when she was six years old. Her father was a professor at Salve Regina University in Newport and her mother a special educational needs teacher. She was interested in music at an early age and wanted to learn guitar chords so her father gave her a guitar when she was nine. Her parents separated when Hersh was 11 and her mother married the father of her best friend Tanya Donelly. Hersh talked Donelly into starting a band, then called The Muses when they were 14. Throwing Muses was formed in 1981 when Hersh and Donelly were freshmen in high school. Friends from school, including Elaine Adamedes, Becca Blumen, Leslie Langston and David Narcizo, were part of the group with Narcizo becoming a long-term member. Hersh initially wrote and sang most of Throwing Muses’ songs, often in changing tempos. Donelly also contributed songs and lead vocals. Hersh attended Salve Regina University, majoring in archetypal psychology and philosophy, and the Rhode Island School of Design, but dropped out shortly before graduating to establish the band in Boston, Massachusetts, where they had been playing on weekends. While at Salve, Hersh befriended film actress Betty Hutton, who was attending the school in her 60s; Hutton also attended several early Throwing Muses shows in Newport. The Throwing Muses were signed to 4AD, the first American group to be signed on the British label, and released their first EP Chains Changed in 1986. Two releases followed, The Fat Skier and the album House Tornado. The 4AD Throwing Muses biography describes its sound at the time as “… joining the dots between elliptical post-punk, harmonious folk jangle and rockabilly thunder without ever settling into standard genre patterns.” For the Throwing Muses 1986 UK tour, the Boston-based Pixies, embarking on their first European tour, was the opening band. The band signed a U.S. deal with Sire/Reprise Records in 1987 and began touring the U.S. and Europe while recording albums, with Hersh writing most of the songs. The band became a trio when Donelly left the group after 1991’s The Real Ramona. In 1994, Hersh began a solo career on Sire/Reprise and 4AD as an acoustic performer, beginning with Hips and Makers, an album sparsely arranged around her vocals, guitar, and a cellist, in contrast to the volatile, electric sound of her band work. Michael Stipe of R.E.M. made an appearance on this first solo album. After receiving some airplay and major media coverage for the Throwing Muses album University in 1995, Hersh moved to Rykodisc for the band’s 1996 album, Limbo, and released her solo album, Strange Angels in 1998. To better control her career and the distribution of her recorded material, she created the ThrowingMusic label with then-husband and manager Billy O’Connell in 1996. This enabled her to co-release some of her projects, including an ongoing download-subscription service called Works in Progress (WIP) for releases available through the label’s website. Hersh continued to offer her solo releases online, releasing “Sky Motel” in 1999. By the mid-90s, David Narcizo became Throwing Muses’ permanent drummer, still playing in the band whenever they tour. Throwing Muses functions as a noncommercial musical enterprise, focusing on touring over record sales and airplay. In a 2014 interview, Hersh stated, “As far as I’m concerned, music is not a commodity. It’s something that people have earned by being human. They have a right to hear it, and a right to share it, as they always have in churches and parties. That’s how music happens. Hersh has said her parents’ album collections, featuring Patti Smith, the Carter Family, Stevie Wonder, Robert Johnson, Talking Heads, The Clash, Steve Miller, The Beatles, Philip Glass, and traditional music all influenced her when she was growing up. Among her early contemporary musical influences are The Raincoats, The Pretenders, Talking Heads, Violent Femmes, Meat Puppets, Dead Kennedys, Hüsker Dü, Velvet Underground, R.E.M., and X. Hersh was married to her former manager Billy O’Connell for 25 years until they divorced in 2013. She has four sons. Hersh has talked openly about her bouts with mental illness and its role in her musical process. A car accident at age 16 while she was riding her bicycle gave her a double concussion that affected the way she heard sounds. She described it as hearing ambient sounds continuously and “…the sounds would alter their sonic vocabulary until I was hearing syllables, and drums. And then all these words would come.” She’s stated that hearing “pieces of songs” in her mind compelled her to take the pieces apart and craft songs from them. She also claims that she doesn’t remember writing her early songs—that “they wrote her.” She’s had more than one diagnosis (and misdiagnoses) for her condition, including schizophrenic disorder, bipolar disorder, and most recently post-traumatic and dissociative disorders, which she says have been successfully treated with eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.]

[Boogarins are a Brazilian psychedelic rock band formed in 2013 by Dinho Almeida (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Benke Ferraz (solo guitar). Later they were joined by Hans Castro (drums) and Raphael Vaz (bass guitar), forming a four-piece. In 2014, Ynaiã Benthroldo replaced Hans as drummer. Boogarins was formed by Benke and Dinho, two childhood friends who got together and recorded an EP at home (As Plantas Que Curam) while they were still at school. After the release of the EP, Boogarins signed a contract with Other Music, the debut album As Plantas Que Curam was released in 2013. A second album followed in 2015. The band took their name from a jasmine flower in Brazil. On June 7, 2017, the band’s third album Lá Vem a Morte was released on YouTube as a surprise for the fans. [Meg Duffy grew up in a small town in Upstate New York and they cut their teeth as a session guitarist and touring member of Kevin Morby’s band. The Hand Habits project emerged after Meg moved to Los Angeles; it started as a private songwriting outlet but soon evolved into a fully-fledged band with Meg at the helm. Hand Habits’ debut album, Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void), was released by Woodsist Records in 2017. The LP was entirely self-produced and recorded in Meg’s home during spare moments when they weren’t touring. Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void) is a lush, homespun collection of folk songs that found Meg in an exploratory state as an artist moving out on their own for the first time. Two years later, Hand Habits has returned with their sophomore album, placeholder. To make this album, Meg chose to work in a studio and bring in collaborators, entrusting them with what had previously been a very personal creative process. Over the course of 12 tracks, Meg emerges with new confidence as both a bandleader and singer. This album is as tender and immediate as anything Meg’s ever written, but it’s also intensely focused and refined, the work of a meticulous musician ready to share their singular vision with the world. The name placeholder stems from Meg’s fascination with the undefinable. Their songs serve as openings — carved-out spaces waiting to be endowed with meaning. As a lyricist, Meg is drawn to the in-between, and the songs on this new album primarily confront the ways in which certain experiences can serve as a stepping stone on the road to self-discovery. “A big aspect of my songwriting and the way I move through the world depends on my relationships with people. The songs on placeholder are about accountability and forgiveness,” Meg says. “These are all real stories. I don’t fictionalize much.” Meg describes these songs as their most direct to date, crafted with clear intention, and unlike Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void), placeholder doesn’t meander. “It’s less of a submerged landscape and more a concise series of thoughts,” Meg explains. Bandwaggn’s mission “…is to create a youth-centered arts and social justice organization, creating a Kansas City chapter of a 6-day summer music program under the national umbrella “Girls Rock Camp Alliance.”

The camp will serve kids who identify as girls, gender nonconforming, and trans, ages 8-17. Bandwaggn’s goal is to host at least 20 kids at the camp June 2020.

Bandwaggn strives to be inclusive and reach as many deserving young folks who want to participate as possible. Outcomes they hope to see include community building and empowerment among our youth participants.

Bandwaggn sees a need for this in Kansas City because most extracurricular opportunities often exclude the most marginalized children and most music camps require previous musical skill and experience.” It’s our goal to become a member of the national Girls Rock Camp Alliance https://www.girlsrockcampalliance.org/

[It slipped out of a Mississippi of hot biscuits, genteel table manners and working-class sense, suddenly overturned by a grave sinning and suicide. Carried on an evening breeze of strings and a supple, foreboding voice like sensually charged breath, “Ode to Bilie Joe”—Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 debut as a singer-songwriter and a Number One single for three weeks in the late Summer of Love—was the most psychedelic record of that year not from San Francisco or London, as if Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Brian Wilson had conspired to make a country-rock Pet Sounds. Except Gentry, just 23 when she wrote the song, got there first, in miniature. // Gentry’s hit was a revolutionary act, a quietly thorough feminism in vision, deed and success amid the strict, paternal order of the country-music industry. And it was her license to thrill again. In October, 1967, while “Billie Joe” was still in the Top Five, Gentry began recording The Delta Sweete, a connected set of a dozen songs that extended the narrative dynamics of that single with personal reflection and set her folk-siren charisma in a richer frame of dream-state orchestration, swamp-rock guitars and big-city-R&B horns. // In her eight original songs for the album, Gentry drew from her childhood and church life on her grandparents’ farm in Chickasaw County, Mississippi: the girl-ish craving for a beautiful dress in “Reunion”; the rise-and-shine of “Mornin’ Glory”; the stern Sunday lessons in “Sermon,” based on a traditional hymn also known as “Run On.” The covers were boldly chosen: Mose Allison’s chain-gang blues “Parchman Farm”; “Tobacco Road”’s litany of trial; the Cajun pride in Doug Kershaw’s “Louisiana Man”. Gentry also turned them to new purpose and even gender. “Gonna get myself a man, one gonna treat me right,” she sang in Jimmy Reed’s “Big Boss Man” with heated assurance. // But The Delta Sweete—released in March, 1968, only three months after Dylan’s John Wesley Harding and right as the Byrds came to Nashville to cut Sweetheart of the Rodeo—was too soon in its precedence. Gentry’s LP, the first country-rock opera, was ignored on arrival, not even cracking Billboard’s Top 100. It was as if Billie Joe had risen out of the Tallahatchie River and thrown that record off the bridge instead. // This Delta Sweete is her long-delayed justice—Mercury Rev’s committed and an affectionate resurrection of an album that anticipated by three decades their own pivotal expedition through transcendental America, 1998’s Deserter’s Songs. From their recording lair in New York’s Catskill Mountains, the founding core of Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper with Jesse Chandler (previously in the Texas group Midlake) honor Gentry’s foresight and creative triumph with spacious invention and hallucinatory air. And they are not alone. Gentry’s stories and original resolve are brought to new vocal life and empowerment by a vocal cast of women from across modern rock and its alternative paths: among them, Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval; Laetitia Sadier, formerly of Stereolab; Marissa Nadler; Margo Price, the fiery new country star with a punk-rock heart; and Norway’s Susanne Sundfør, who cuts through “Tobacco Road” with arctic-Nico poise. Phoebe Bridgers, whose first record was a softly stunning 2015 single for Ryan Adams’ PAX AM label, hovers through the acid- western suspense of Gentry’s “Jessye’ Lisabeth” with floating calm, like a comforting angel. // On the 1968 LP, Gentry opened with a call to jubilant order, “Okolona River Bottom Band,” like she was leading a barn-dance union of the early Rolling Stones and Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five. Norah Jones takes that entrance here with her own sultry command, like Sarah Vaughan at the head of a slow-blooming choir. In “Sermon,” Price—who has known real struggle up close—sings like a survivor through Mercury Rev’s explosion of color and groove: a specialty throughout the band’s history as recently as 2015’s The Light in You, going back through All Is Dream in 2001, the whirling iridescent soul of 1995’s See You on the Other Side and the sumptuous turbulence of the 1992 single “Car Wash Hair.” // Gentry is still very present in the changes. Her seesaw of pride and hurt in the melancholy blur of “Penduli Pendulum” (“When goodbye serves as/My one amusement”) is even more explicit with the seasoned intimacy of Vashti Bunyan—a once-elusive voice from Britain’s psychedelic-folk boom—set against the younger, brighter arc of Kaela Sinclair, now in the electronic project M83. And in “Courtyard,” a despairing finale of strings and guitar arpeggios on Gentry’s LP, Mercury Rev build a striking Delta Krautrock in which the English singer Beth Orton wanders, like Gentry, through a ruin of profound loss and treasured memory. // “Ode to Billie Joe” was not on the ‘68 Delta Sweete. But Mercury Rev go back to that dinner table with Lucinda Williams of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and it is an inspired bond, calling up the ghosts and questions of a South still very much with us. Indeed, Gentry—who retired from recording and performing in the Seventies—reportedly lives only a couple hours’ drive from the bridge that made her famous, while the spirits she set loose in The Delta Sweete are as restless and compelling as they were 50 years ago. This album is a loving tribute to that achievement, one of the greatest albums you have never heard. It is also a dozen new ways to walk that land. -David Fricke]

[Kamasi Washington was born in Los Angeles, California, on February 2, 1981 to musical parents and educators, and was raised in Inglewood, California. He is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, producer, and bandleader. Washington is known mainly for playing tenor saxophone. He is a graduate of the Academy of Music of Alexander Hamilton High School in Beverlywood, Los Angeles. Washington next enrolled in UCLA’s Department of Ethnomusicology, where he began playing with faculty members such as Kenny Burrell, Billy Higgins and band leader/trumpeter Gerald Wilson. Washington features in the album Young Jazz Giants in 2004. He has played along with a diverse group of musicians including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Horace Tapscott, Gerald Wilson, Lauryn Hill, Nas, Snoop Dogg, George Duke, Chaka Khan, Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Mike Muir, Francisco Aguabella, the Pan Afrikaan People’s Orchestra and Raphael Saadiq. Washington ventured into big band music when he joined the Gerald Wilson Orchestra for their 2006 album In My Time. Washington played saxophone on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. His debut solo recording, The Epic, was released in May 2015 to critical acclaim. His second studio album, Heaven and Earth, was released in June 2018, with a companion EP titled The Choice released a week later.]

[A new Belle and Sebastian release is always something to cheer. So three new releases leads to the inevitable conclusion: three cheers! Here is the latest installment in a career that has always pursued a singular and delightful vision of what pop represents and what it can achieve, a career that has seen them triumph against the odds to win a Brit award, be one of the first bands to curate their own festival, and play at the official London residence of the US ambassador (the last president’s ambassador, not the current one’s). Murdoch, as ever, is not the only writer. [Los Angeles based band with: Syd Bennett, Matthew Martin, Patrick Paige II, Christopher Allan Smith and Steve Lacy. THE INTERNET began as two people – Syd and Matt. Syd taught herself how to record, engineer, and produce at age 15. She also sings, imbuing every song with a sultry, mellifluous, quiet power. Matt produces and plays synths. She’s now 23; he’s now 26. Like all post-modern relationships, the duo initially met on Myspace in 2008, only to meet in-person three years later. THE INTERNET have released two albums previously – 2011’s Purple Naked Ladies, and 2012’s Feel Good. THE INTERNET branched off from the Odd Future collective and started their own band in 2011. Syd had been writing music since she was small; she put this on hold to become OF’s DJ and producer, and picked her songs back up in 2011 to make her first full-length album with Matt. When they play live, THE INTERNET is a band – a six-person outfit whose youngest member is 17. 8. Fantastic Negrito – “A Letter To Fear”

[Fantastic Negrito was raised in an orthodox Muslim household. His father was a Somali-Caribbean immigrant who mostly played traditional African music. When, at the age of 12, Negrito’s family moved from Massachusetts to Oakland, California. Oakland in 1970s was a million miles from Negrito’s conservative childhood. He went from Arab chants to Funkadelic in one day. By the time he was 20, Negrito had taught himself to play every instrument he could get his hands on. He was recording music, and after some difficulties on the streets he packed his bags and headed to LA, armed with a demo on cassette. Negrito signed with a million dollar deal at Interscope. The record deal was a disaster. Gangsta rap was ruling the airwaves and Negrito was in the wrong place at the wrong era. Negrito came out of the deal with a failed album and his confidence gutted. In 2000, Negrito was in a near fatal car accident that put him in a coma. For four weeks it was touch and go. Because his muscles atrophied while bedridden, he had to go through months of frustrating physical therapy to regain use of his legs. Rods were placed throughout his body. And worst of all, his playing hand was mutilated. Back in Oakland, Negrito forgot about life as a musician. He got married, he planted vegetables, raised his own chickens, and made money growing weed. He also settled into being a man, on his own, clear of the distractions of wanting to be a star. And then his son Kyu was born. He began recording without the hindrances that come with chasing trends. Negrito turned to the original DNA of all American music, the Blues. The beating life had given him primed him to channel his literal and musical forefathers: the Blues musicians of the Delta]

9. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – “Haunt”

[Rock band from San Francisco, California with: Peter Hayes (on vocals, guitar, harmonica; Robert Levon Been on vocals, bass, guitar; and Leah Shapiro on drums. Former drummer Nick Jago left the band in 2008 to focus on his solo project. They have released eight studio albums: B.R.M.C. (2001), Take Them On, On Your Own (2003), Howl (2005), Baby 81 (2007), The Effects of 333 (2008), Beat the Devil’s Tattoo (2010), Specter at the Feast (2013) and Wrong Creatures (2018), as well as several EPs, and live albums. The band was formed in 1998, originally called The Elements. After discovering that another band had the same name, the members changed the name to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, after Marlon Brando’s motorcycle gang in the 1953 film The Wild One.]

11. Super Elcados – “Tambourine Party”

[Official Mr Bongo reissue of the ultra-rare album by ‘Super Elcados’. A fusion of heavyweight Nigerian funk, soul & disco, originally released by EMI Nigeria in 1976. The ‘Super Elcados’ (and ’Elcados’ on other recordings) recorded three albums in the mid and late-70’s, this is their first. It was followed by ‘This World Is Full Of Injustice’ and ‘What Ever You Need’.]

12. The Souljazz Orchestra – “Lufunki”

[The Souljazz Orchestra is a Canadian musical group based in Ottawa that has toured Canada, the United States and Europe. Their music is a fusion of soul, jazz, funk, Afrobeat and Latin styles. The band has six members: Pierre Chrétien on electric piano, clavinet, organ, guitar, bass, percussion, vocals; Marielle Rivard on percussion, vocals; Steve Patterson on tenor sax, percussion, vocals; Ray Murray on baritone sax, percussion, vocals; Zakari Frantz on alto sax, flute, percussion, vocals; Philippe Lafrenière on drums, percussion, vocals. The band signed to London-based Strut Records, a UK record label that focuses on dance music and afrobeat. Other musicians signed to Strut include “Ethio-Jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke, Motown guitarist Dennis Coffey and Ghanaian highlife singer Ebo Taylor, to name a few.” According to AllMusic, the band’s “overtly political 2006 single “Mista President,” off second album Freedom No Go Die (Do Right!), really increased their audience, [as it was] voted to the number nine spot in the 2006 Top 30 of BBC DJ Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide programme. In 2012, the band completed two US tours that included stops in cities such as Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Chicago. Their Resistance album release tour of Europe, all October/November 2015, sees them among others in London, Liverpool, Zurich, Paris, Lyon, Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Cologne, Vienna, Prague, Athens, Marseille.]

13. Hand Habits – “Actress”

[“Meg Duffy, aka Hand Habits, is a singer, songwriter and guitarist from Upstate New York. She has been putting her time in on the road and in the studio over the past two years with pacific northwest band Mega Bog, and the Kevin Morby Band, making an impression on everyone she comes across with her natural charisma and uncharted talent as a multi-instrumentalist. But let Wildly Idle (Humble Before The Void) be her open invitation to the world to step inside and take a much deeper look into who Duffy actually is. Tracked in an Upstate New York living room, then finished in her current home in Los Angeles – it is appropriate that this album was recorded by Meg herself – for Meg, who has an acute ear for detail, has touched every corner, has seen every vision ’til its end. Because of this, Wildly Idle feels incredibly intimate, like a secret between her and the listener. 14. Vive la Void – “Red Rider”

[Vive la Void is the new solo project of Sanae Yamada, co-founder and keyboard player of Moon Duo. Yamada wrote and recorded the self-titled debut album over roughly a two-year period, during windows of downtime in Moon Duo’s substantial touring and recording schedule. The dense, shape-shifting atmospheres of the seven songs grew out of late-night basement experiments in the layering of synthesizer tracks, a process that also led to meditations on the changeable nature of memory and perception. The result is an undulating blend of ethereal swirl, low end thrumming, and electric crackle, buoyed by Yamada’s understated but captivating vocal melodies and her striking lyrics. “The lyrics were a way of reckoning with my own memories and also of trying to process my reactions to the human situation,” Yamada explains. “I wanted the voice to have a kind of ghostly quality, to emerge from and recede back into the song, or to pass over it like weather. It’s one of many layers of sound, which are meant to blend together in such a way that on one listen you might hear one thing, and on another listen you might hear something else, so the music seems to change even as it stays the same.” Yamada has spent the last decade as a working musician, moving between semi-permanent home bases whenever she isn’t living in a tour van. In some ways, then, it feels inevitable that Vive la Void became a meditation on the strange rhythms of long-term touring, constant relocation, and the accompanying stream of brief but compelling encounters. It’s a testament to her empathy and creativity that these songs feel both specific and universal, familiar yet tantalizingly unknowable. “I feel like the movement of life in the sphere of consciousness is this process of trace-leaving,” Yamada reflects. “Wherever we go, whomever we interact with, whatever we touch, we leave and absorb these invisible traces, this residue of memory that lingers. I wanted the sonic textures of this record to explore that state of being there and not there, of something being with you but not tangible.”]

15. Ty Segall & White Fence – “Room Connector”
from: Joy / Drag City / July 20, 2018
[From Paste Magazine (July 18, 2018): Another month, another Ty Segall album. As noted in Paste earlier this year, the king of California psych/garage/punk-rock is arguably THEE most prolific major musician working right now, and the level of quality he achieves across his releases is incredibly high. The guy is quickly putting together an all-timer of a catalog. The newest entry in said catalog is Segall’s second collaborative album with veteran Los Angeles psych-pop experimenter White Fence, aka Tim Presley, formerly of The Nerve Agents and Darker My Love, and more recently Cate Le Bon’s partner in DRINKS. The two men joined forces in 2012 to produce a fun and fuzzed-out collection of songs called Hair, a “glorious mess of an album” we said way back when. Joy is a little more messy but almost as glorious. With track times mostly clocking in under 120 seconds, it’s a series of quick hits that are warped but relentlessly tuneful, like a Beatles LP that’s spent a blazing hot afternoon lying on a busy freeway. As songwriters, Segall and Presley complement each other nicely: Segall certainly knows his way around a catchy tune, but Presley’s a more natural melodicist, and while Presley definitely has his own rough edge, Segall’s a prodigious shredder. Wonder Twin Powers, activate! Form of…a fucked-up pop song! Highlights on Joy include “Body Behavior,” a pulsing acoustic rocker that snakes in the verses and sparkles in the chorus; “Other Way,” a dead-eyed noise excavation that feels like it fell off the Incesticide tree of influence; and “A Nod,” another rhythmic strummer that may just boast the prettiest melody on the album. There are other great songs here: the occasionally jazzy “Good Boy,” the beautiful and Neil Young-ish “My Friend,” and the propulsive “Do Your Hair,” which is powered by a bouncy bass line and uses its 95 seconds with impressive efficiency. The opposite is true for a couple of tracks that show up near the end of the album, “She Is Gold” and “Tommy’s Place,” two silly and/or stoney studio experiments that go nowhere, really. Joy would’ve been a tighter overall package if they’d been cut. With Segall, though, it’s worth hearing a couple of clunkers if it means he’ll keep making music at his preferred dizzying pace, because his hit-to-miss ratio is so high. And collaborating with Presley doesn’t dent that ratio. In fact, it brings out good things in both men. Here’s hoping their next album isn’t another six years away.

[For fans of boogie in its Stateside form—think Kashif, Mtume, and the sprawling SOLAR Records oeuvre of producer Leon Sylvers III–Chébran Volume 2 offers both the comfort of the familiar and the thrill of the exotic. The brassy synthesizer tone on songs like “Heidi Bled Noum,” originally released by Shams Dinn in 1987, could just as easily have come out of Minneapolis circa 1983; and the Francophone flows on rap tracks like Phil Barney’s “Funk Rap,” JM Black’s “Lipstick,” and Alfio Scandurra’s “Qu’est Ce Qui Ne Va Pas?” demonstrate that even if the South Bronx was far away, the fruits of its culture had reached as far as Paris and Marseilles. But the songs collected here are more than just novel variations on American sounds; at their most intriguing, they reflect the unique cultural makeup of post-colonial France. Boogie, of course, grew out of the cross-pollinations between African American funk and European synthpop; the Gallic variety, with its roots in French immigrant communities, incorporated even further-flung influences from Africa and the Middle East. The aforementioned Dinn, born Mohammed Ben Bouchta, performs in Arabic, as do many of the other artists on the compilation; “Propriété Privée” singer Sammy Massamba hails from the Congo; the proto-electro “Ettika” was recorded by a group of Franco-Arab women of the same name. Chébran is rife with such intercontinental couplings and fascinating stylistic mutations, and the later chronological focus of this second volume opens up even more possibilities, with frequent forays into hip-hop and pure electronic music. It’s easy to picture Afro-French B-boys popping and locking to “Porquoi Tant de Haine,” the 1988 closing track by MC Joel Ferrati; or to Ethnie’s 1986 “De Chagrin en Chagrin,” which pairs a funky live hip-hop arrangement with an Arabic call-and-response chorus. Like most compilations of its ilk, Chébran’s sampling of international dance obscurities holds immediate appeal for DJs and other crate-digging connoisseurs of rare grooves. But there’s also an intrinsic value to hearing post-disco sounds defamiliarized and recontextualized in this way. A nebulous, short-lived genre even in its American form, boogie is often overlooked as a stopgap between disco proper and its sleeker, more mechanized offshoots, such as electro, house and techno. The hybrid formulations on Chébran Volume 2 offer a glimpse of the style’s unexploited possibilities, its adaptability into alternative cultures and contexts. Una Walkenhorst has lived in New Orleans, and Brooklyn, New York

After her 2014 debut release “Scars” Una Walkenhorst quit her job, got in her two-door Honda Civic and traveled across North America for a year and a half.

Una wanted to make it as a musician, on her own terms without help from her father.

Una Walkenhorst is the youngest daughter to dad Bob Walkenhorst, a founding member of The Rainmakers, which had a string of national and international hits in the 1980s and 90s.

Una told KCUR FM that her father was one of the people who made her love music. But having a famous father was sometimes challenging: “I knew that if I started my music career here I would have a lot of opportunities, but not all of them would be because of my music. They would be because I am someone’s daughter,” Walkenhorst says.

Una has a new album, recorded with her father, (Bob Walkenhorst of The Rainmakers) called, For Tomorrow, that will be released on October 12.

Una Walkenhorst plays Songs For Justice: A Benefit for the Midwest Innocence Project, Monday, August 20, at 7:00 PM at recordBar.

The Midwest Innocence Project (MIP) is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the investigation, litigation, and exoneration of wrongfully convicted men and women in our five-state region. Recent studies conservatively estimate that between 2% and 5% of all inmates in America are innocent of the crimes for which they were convicted, with some estimates reaching up to 7%. This means that somewhere between 2,000 and 7,000 moms, dads, sons, and daughters in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Arkansas are locked behind bars this very moment for crimes they did not commit.

After a conviction, it takes roughly seven to ten years for an innocent person to be exonerated, and the process is very expensive. As of May 2017, the 349 men and women across the country who have been exonerated through DNA served an average of 14 years in prison. The MIP staff, along with our Board of Directors, Advisory Board, Next Gen Board, and volunteers, works diligently to give freedom back to those whom the legal system has failed. Thanks to our partnerships with law schools at the University of Missouri in Kansas City and Columbia and the University of Kansas, our presence in the classroom gives us the opportunity to teach the next generation of lawyers and investigators how to identify and prevent these injustices.

The Midwest Innocence Project was founded in 2001 through the UMKC School of Law and is part of the national Innocence Network. In addition to our university partnerships, we also work in conjunction with the Nebraska Innocence Project, and Iowa Public Defender’s Wrongful Conviction Division. Una tells us the Blue False Indigo will have their own Album Release Show on September 8.

Una Walkenhorst is working on her second solo album to follow up on Scars (released in 2014). She says that her previous album was lighter, but for her second album she is older, and in a different place, and plans to focus on heavier topics including mental illness and depression.

Una told KCUR FM, “It can be very stigmatizing and people don’t want to talk about it a lot, but I feel that it’s very important thing to talk about. So quite few songs in my next album will touch upon mental illness, and what it’s like to live with anxiety and depression.”
