4. Kevin Morby – “Aboard My Train”

[4th release from Kevin Robert Morby born April 2, 1988, and learned to play guitar when he was 10. In his teens he formed the band Creepy Aliens. 17-year-old Morby dropped out of Blue Valley Northwest High School, got his GED, and moved from his native Kansas City to Brooklyn in the mid-2000s, supporting himself by working bike delivery and café jobs. He later joined the noise-folk group Woods on bass. While living in Brooklyn, he became close friends and roommates with Cassie Ramone of the punk trio Vivian Girls, and the two formed a side project together called The Babies, who released albums in 2011 and 2012. He began a solo career in 2013 releasing his debut album Harlem River with positive reviews. His 2nd album Still Life was released in 2014. His last album Singing Saw was ione of our 116 Best Recordings of 2016]

Sarah Beth Mundy‘s writing is a blend of the intimate and the confessional. She is most known for the two years she devoted to KC’s Dear Diary series, where she performed for audiences her most cringe-inducing teenage diaries. Sarah Beth has also given spoken-word performance across multimedia collaborations, including the 2015 Art Sounds series event “As I See You,” and a multi-artist album currently in production titled “Muses and Mavericks,” curated by Kansas City musician Mark Lauer. Sarah Beth was also one of the writer/performers in our Wednesday MidDay Medley, live stage show at the recordBar, called: “A Story in A Song.” Sarah Beth is a part-time instructor in the English Department at UMKC, where she received her M.A. in English Literature in 2014.

Sarah Beth Mundy joins us to talk about her new monthly series, Hymen In Hysterics – Meditations on Mental Disorder, at The Outburst KC, 1715 Wyandotte, KCMO.

I first encountered Sarah Beth Mundy at Dear Diary, at The Fishtank Theatre space at 1715 Wyandotte, which is now called The Outburst KC and owned by Susanna Lee Lucky Deluxe. Sarah talked about feeling comfortable being back in the space where she first bravely shared her intimate and teenage diary entries to a room full of audience members. The intimacy of the space is often a good match for the intimacy of the material.

[Kansas City based 2 piece rock band, that tour all over the USA and Europe each year. Nan plays drums and Matt plays guitar and they both sing. They lived in NYC for 15 years before moving to the Kansas City area, where Matt originally came from. Their music and their live shows are exceptional. Generally at live shows, as an added bonus, Matt will read an original poem while Nan performs an interpretive dance inspired by the poem. Matt also performs and records as Major Matt Mason USA , Nan also performs in her collaborative piece, Nan and The One Nite Stands. Easily this is one of my all time favorite area bands!!!]

7. John Moreland – “Lies I Chose To Believe”

[Tulsa, Oklahoma based singer-songwriter John Moreland was born June 22, 1985 in Longview, Texas. The son of Robert Lloyd Moreland and Connie May, Moreland’s father worked for Sunoco as an electrical engineer, and because of this job the family moved a lot. When he was a baby they moved to Northern Kentucky, across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio. Moreland credits his love for Cincinnati Reds to this time in Kentucky. When Moreland was 10 years old Moreland’s family moved from Boone County, Kentucky to Tulsa, Oklahoma and with the help of his father, started playing the guitar. When he was 12 he played with a kid he went to church with who wrote songs and inspired him to start writing songs “that made sense.” John grew up in a conservative Southern Baptist family. “From the time I was born up until about age 16, my entire worldview and all my opinions were pretty much solely influenced by the evangelical church. All the years since then have sort of been this slow process of figuring out where I stand now that I’m not an impressionable kid anymore. I feel like I’m done with that at this point, but it keeps showing up in songs. I guess that stuff stays in your psyche forever.” His “High on Tulsa Heat” was in our 115 Best Recordings of 2015.]

[8th studio album release from the Portland Oregon based band that was originally formed in Wasilla, Alaska in 2004. The new album was produced by Mike D of The Beasty Boys. The group consists of John Gourley, Zach Carothers, Kyle O’Quin, Jason Sechrist and Eric Howk. Gourley and Carothers met and began playing music together at Wasilla High School.]

9. Making Movies – “Brave Enough (feat. Hurray for the Riff Raff & Alaina Moore)”

[3rd full length release: from Kansas City based 4-piece band and made up of two sets of brothers: Enrique Chi on guitar and lead vocals; Diego Chi on bass & vocals; Juan-Carlos Chaurand on percussion & keyboards; and Andres Chaurand on drums. The band draws their influences from the origins of their families: Santiago, Panama, and Kansas City, Missouri, and Guadalajara, Mexico. The band is also involved in a music camp they created as a service to the neighborhood that inspired songs. One of the band’s key collaborators on the camp is Clint Velasquez, a gifted music educator with a huge heart for the community. He created a non-profit in Kansas City called Base Academy of Music (B.A.M.) in order to provide quality music education in the inner city at a fraction of the cost of what it would be elsewhere. (B.A.M.) makes starting to learn a musical instrument accessible and affordable for urban youth. The organization believes music education is a reason and a means to succeed and collaborates with local schools and community centers to offer both private lessons and afterschool group programs.]

10. Samantha Fish – “Chills & Fever”

[Growing up in Kansas City, Samantha Fish switched from drums to guitar at the tender age of 15. She spent much of her time in local watering holes listening to visiting blues bands. Samantha caught the attention of Ruf Records who released her album, Girls with Guitars, which found her co-billed with Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde. That led to her forming her own trio and recording three more albums, Runaway (2011), Black Wind Howlin’ (2013) and Wild Heart (2015). She was awarded, Best Artist Debut at the 2012 Blues Music Awards in Memphis. For Chills & Fever, Fish traveled to Detroit to collaborate with members of the Detroit Cobras, a band popular in the Midwest punk/blues scene. The collaboration included Joe Mazzola on guitar, Steve Nawara on bass, Kenny Tudrick with Bob Mervak on keys, and Mark Levron and Travis Blotsky on trumpet and saxophone. The band covers songs from Jackie DeShannon, Jerry Ragavoy, Bert Berns and Allen Toussaint while also revisiting some earlier demos she cut along with producer Bobby Harlow.]

11. Big Freedia – “I Heard”

[Raised on Josephine Street in uptown New Orleans, Big Freedia, born Freddie Ross, was raised by his mother, a hairdresser, and stepfather, a truck driver for Coca-Cola. When Freddie was 15, the family moved to a more upscale neighborhood in New Orleans. Freddie, along with his brother Adam and sister Crystal Ross, were immersed in music at home by their mother, who often sang along to her Gladys Knight and Patty LaBelle records around the house. But it was the Baptist church choir where a young Freddie flourished. ”My mother made sure I never missed practice,” recalls Freedia. It’s no wonder that by the time he was 18, Freedia moved from member to director of the choir. Big Freedia is known as the Queen of Bounce, at the forefront of the Bounce rap movement (a subgenre of hip-hop born out of New Orleans and known for its call and response style and lightening speed booty-shaking dance). Though gay and proud, Big Freedia asserts that her (Freedia is a he but uses the feminine pronoun for her stage persona) sexuality has little to do with her music and rejects the term Sissy Bounce (the queer brand of Bounce). “All Bounce is Bounce,” he insists. “There’s no need to separate it out. All types of people—gay, straight, rich, poor, black, white come to my shows. People just wanna get out and shake their azzzz and have a good time!” And therein lies the beauty of Big Freedia: She can rock a pair of dangling gold earrings and light up a blunt and chop it up with the hardest rapper around. She’s not a gay artist, but rather an artist who happens to be gay. Big Freedia has gone from a local New Orleans phenomenon to a national one after appearing on the HBO series ‘Treme’ [as herself] and in 2010, she released her debut EP on Scion A/V Presents: Big Freedia, produced by NOLA producer BlaqNmilD. The EP featured notables “Excuse” and “Almost Famous; other fan-favorites include “Gin in my System” “Azz Everwhere” and “Y’all Get Back Now.” Shefollowed that up by releasing “Nah Who Mad” and “Booty Whop,” and she was featured on Spank Rock’s “Everything is Boring and Everyone is a Fucking Liar” LP, on the track “Nasty.” She was also featured on “Peanut Butter” with RuPaul. Freedia made her network television network debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! She appeared on “Last Call with Carson Daly,” FADERTV, PITCHFORK TV and has been lauded in press outlets such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Fader, RollingStone.com, SPIN, OffBeat, Chicago Tribune.]

The Kansas City based 4-piece band, Lovergurl caught our ear with their synth pop sound and lyrics reflecting social and political messages with hip hop and punk elements. Band members include: Stephanie Bankston on keyboards & vocals, Brook Worlledge on drums & vocals, Heather Andrews on guitar & vocals, and Adam Speer on bass.

Stephanie Bankston, Brook Worlledge, Heather Andrews, thanks for being on WMM

Lovergurl keyboardist and vocalist, Stephanie Bankston was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. She is a graduate of The University of Missouri. She moved abroad in her 20s, and lived in Seoul, Korea, where she played in a mostly female band called BaekMa (“White Horse”). Stephanie returned to Kansas City in the Fall 2015. She has been playing piano since she was 5 years old, and writing music since her teenge year. Stephanie has also been in various bands since college including” Stephanie’s musical influences include: M83, Passion Pit, Washed Out, LCD Soundsystem, and STRFKR.

Brook Worlledge, is 25 years old and is a Kansas City native. She is the band’s drummer and she sings and writes songs for the band. Brook is a defender of the proletariat. (The workers, working-class people, wage earners, the working classes, the common people, the lower classes, the masses, the rank and file, the third estate, the plebeians.) Brook’s influences range from the B52s, The Velvet Underground, The Brian Jonestown Massacre

Lovergurl guitarist and vocalist, Heather Andrews is also 25. She was born and raised in Rhode Island, and moved to Kansas City in 2011 and fell in love with the city. Heather Andrews influences include: Le Tigre, Best Coast, and Wolf Alice.

The band formed in 2016

Ron Knox of The Pitch wrote about the band in the August 16, 2016 edition saying, “Lovergurl takes aim at institutions, social structures and music scenes built by and seemingly for those who undeservedly wield power and privilege — men, rich people, white folks. It’s not rare subject matter; songs laser-focused on real-world issues are commonplace in hip-hop and punk. What’s unusual here is that Lovergurl leans on a sound that borders on straight-ahead pop. “Colorado Springs” couches its call for women’s safety, in the wake of the Planned Parenthood shootings in that city, within moody synths and a crooning vocal line. Another song, the yet-to-be-recorded “Prospect,” points out the irony in the name of the thoroughfare that runs through KC’s marginalized East Side, doing so with ease rather than by brute force.”

Last year we fell in love with their song. “Colorado Springs” that the band put out as a single track, with three other songs, on the band’s Bandcamp page: http://www.lovergurl.bandcamp.com. This song was inspired by the real life event shooting and 6-hour siege at a Planned Parenthood Clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado, that left 3 people dead including a 44 year old policeman, and on Friday, November 27, 2015. [Laurel Morgan grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. Classically trained, she has been playing the violin for nearly 30 years. Laurel graduated from the UMKC Conservatory of Music in 2005. She has also performed with the Des Moines Symphony, Quixotic fusion ensemble, Musical Theatre Heritage at the Off-Center Theatre and as a member of folk-rock band, ‘In the Pines” that won several Pitch music awards. As a composer, arranger, and musician Laurel Morgan has traveled to Germany, Austria, and throughout the United States, but is based here in KC. Sascha Groschang graduated from Paseo Academy of Performing Arts in 2000, UMKC Conservatory of Music in 2004, and Mannes College – The New School For Music in 2008. She had her solo recital debut at Carnegie Hall’s recital hall, Weill Hall in February 2009. Sascha has recorded or performed with Peter Gabriel, Joanna Newsom, Ashanti, Adina Menzel, Clay Walker, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. She has also worked for NBC and Rhino Records. She is currently working with Juniper String Ensemble, Saint Joesph Symphony, and is part of the faculty at Missouri Western State University. She also teaches out of her Midtown KC home studio. 19. Mac DeMarco – “This Old Dog”

[3rd full-length album by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mac DeMarco. Following the release of Another One, DeMarco moved from his isolated Queens home to a house in Los Angeles to create the album. The album spawned two singles in January, “My Old Man” and “This Old Dog”, which are the two first tracks on the album. The singles “On The Level” and “One More Love Song” were released in April 2017. The album leaked on April 13, 2017. DeMarco recorded This Old Dog while moving to Los Angeles, he describes the experiences and time it took to develop and make the album: “I demoed a full album, and as I was moving to the West Coast I thought I’d get to finishing it quick. But then I realized that moving to a new city and starting a new life takes time. And it was weird, because usually I just write, record, and put it out; no problem. But this time, I wrote them and they sat. When that happens, you really get to know the songs. It was a different vibe.” McBriare Samuel Lanyon “Mac” DeMarco (born Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith IV, April 30, 1990) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. He has released three full-length studio albums, 2 (2012), Salad Days (2014), and This Old Dog (2017) and two mini-LPs, his debut record Rock and Roll Night Club (2012) and Another One (2015). His style of music has been creatively described as “blue wave”, “slacker rock”, or self-described by DeMarco as “jizz jazz”.]

The band is based in Portland, Oregon.The band was formed by Mercer as a side project to Flake Music, who were active from 1992 to 1999. The band released two 7″ singles and a full-length album When You Land Here It’s Time to Return on Omnibus Records and were touring with Modest Mouse when they were signed to Sub Pop Records. The band’s first two records, Oh, Inverted World (2001) and Chutes Too Narrow (2003) performed well commercially and received critical acclaim. The single “New Slang” brought the band mainstream attention when it was featured in the 2004 film Garden State.
