About Mark Manning

For 19 years Mark Manning has served as Coordinator of the KCK Organic Teaching Gardens, an Initiative of The University of Kansas School of Medicine, Office of Cultural Enhancement and Diversity, Health Careers Pathways Program, K-12. Each year Mark works with 1000 to 2000 students, between K through 8th grades, with organic, "raised bed" gardens built directly on the school grounds of three Middle Schools and four Elementary Schools in the inner city of the Kansas City, Kansas school district. Mark conducts over 440 workshops annually in classrooms at these schools. He started the project under the guidance of Marcia Pomeroy, in 1999, after working in a literacy program. The KCK Organic Teaching Gardens has been financially supported through grants from The Kauffman Foundation, and The University of Kansas Medical Center. The project has been recognized locally and nationally by The National Gardening Association, The Kansas City Star, The Kansas City Community Gardens, The Green Bliss Festival, The Urban Farm & Garden Tour, and on the PBS television program America's Harvest. Mark learned about gardening from his grandmother Edna Jacobsen on the family's McCool Junction, Nebraska farm. His grandmother raised a huge garden, chickens, sheep and cattle. She preserved apples, wild berry jams, and beets and virtually everything she grew was canned for consumption in winter months. Edna raised seven children with no running water and as a child lived in a sod house. His passion for the school gardening program has been fueled by the fact that he doesn't see the lessons he learned from his grandmother passed down to kids today. Kids need to know where their food comes from, especially with the rise of diabetes, and over weight Americans. We can all learn from our gardens how to treat ourselves and the world better.

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / 1980 [WMM’s theme song]

2. Fantastic Negrito – “The Duffler”
from: Please Don’t Be Dead / Blackball Universe / June 15, 2018
[Fantastic Negrito was raised in an orthodox Muslim household. His father was a Somali-Caribbean immigrant who mostly played traditional African music. When, at the age of 12, Negrito’s family moved from Massachusetts to Oakland, California. Oakland in 1970s was a million miles from Negrito’s conservative childhood. He went from Arab chants to Funkadelic in one day. By the time he was 20, Negrito had taught himself to play every instrument he could get his hands on. He was recording music, and after some difficulties on the streets he packed his bags and headed to LA, armed with a demo on cassette. Negrito signed with a million dollar deal at Interscope. The record deal was a disaster. Gangsta rap was ruling the airwaves and Negrito was in the wrong place at the wrong era. Negrito came out of the deal with a failed album and his confidence gutted. In 2000, Negrito was in a near fatal car accident that put him in a coma. For four weeks it was touch and go. Because his muscles atrophied while bedridden, he had to go through months of frustrating physical therapy to regain use of his legs. Rods were placed throughout his body. And worst of all, his playing hand was mutilated. Back in Oakland, Negrito forgot about life as a musician. He got married, he planted vegetables, raised his own chickens, and made money growing weed. He also settled into being a man, on his own, clear of the distractions of wanting to be a star. And then his son Kyu was born. He began recording without the hindrances that come with chasing trends. Negrito turned to the original DNA of all American music, the Blues. The beating life had given him primed him to channel his literal and musical forefathers: the Blues musicians of the Delta]

[Fantastic Negrito plays Knuckleheads, Wednesday, July 11, at 8:00 PM, with Levee Town.]

3. Rooftop Vigilantes – “Oracle Cop”

They have now been signed to High Dive Records. For this new album, most of the songs were recorded in the basement of band member Seth Wiese. They finished the album on tour, and some of the parts were done in NYC, as was the mixing.]

[Rooftop Vigilantes are celebrating their 10 year anniversary with a reunion show of their original lineup and a full stack of their classic tunes, at Voltaire, Friday, June 29, at 11:00 with Drugs & Attics.]

14. Built To Spill – “The Plan”
from: Keep It Like A Secret / Warner Bros. / February 2, 1999
[Members include: Doug Martsch, Steve Gere, & Jason Albertini based in Boise, Idaho. The band has released 8 full-length albums. Guitarist/vocalist Doug Martsch formed Built to Spill in 1992 with Brett Netson and Ralf Youtz as original members. In an interview with Spin, Martsch stated that he intended to change the band’s lineup for every album, himself as the only permanent member. After their first album, Ultimate Alternative Wavers, was released in 1993, Netson & Youtz were replaced by Brett Nelson & Andy Capps for 1994’s There’s Nothing Wrong with Love. A compilation album called The Normal Years followed, which included recordings by both lineups. Built to Spill Caustic Resin, an EP that features Martsch with the members of Caustic Resin, was released in 1996. Between recording albums in 1995, the band gained exposure by playing the Lollapalooza tour. Also in 1995, the band collaborated on the song “Still Flat” for the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Bothered, produced by the Red Hot Organization. Martsch signed Built to Spill to Warner Bros. Records in 1995. The deal the band brokered with Warner Bros. allowed it to retain a large degree of creative control over future albums. Built to Spill produced its first major label release in 1997 with Perfect from Now On. By this time, the band consisted of Martsch, Nelson, Netson, and Scott Plouf. Perfect from Now On was met with critical success and caused Built to Spill to become one of the most recognizable indie rock bands. Before releasing another album, Martsch made Nelson and Plouf permanent members of the band. In 1999, the band released Keep It Like a Secret to continued critical success and for the first time, significant commercial success. Live was released in 2000, and the band’s 5th studio album, Ancient Melodies of the Future, was released in 2001. The band’s 8th album Untethered Moon was released on April 18, 2015. The album was recorded as a trio with Martsch, Albertini, and Gere and was co-produced by Martsch and frequent Built to Spill guest keyboardist Sam Coomes. On Sept. 14, 2017 Built to Spill announced on their Facebook page that they were moving on from Warner Brothers and taking over the management of builttospill.com.]

15. Nikki Lane – “Jackpot”
from: Highway Queen / New West Records / February 13, 2017
[Nikki Lane was born October 17, 1983, in Greenville, South Carolina, and dropped out of high school there. She then worked as a fashion designer for a time, before moving to Los Angeles in 2006 and later to New York City. After doing so, she broke up with a country musician, who left her to record an album in Alabama; this experience inspired her to begin writing country music songs. Lane, who now lives in Nashville, also owns and operates a clothing store called “High Class Hillbilly”. Nikki Lane is an American country music singer-songwriter and artist. She has released three albums: Walk of Shame, All or Nothin’, and Highway Queen. Highway Queen was recorded near Dallas, TX at The Echo Lab from February to June 2016 with Nikki’s boyfriend Jonathan Tyler, as well as the other members of her current touring band. Two music videos were released ahead of the album’s release; the title track, Highway Queen, in which Nikki and friends crush cars with a monster truck, and Jackpot, in which Nikki and Jonathan Tyler successfully try their luck in old Sin City, ultimately resulting in a Vegas chapel wedding..]

[The debut LP from three-piece band formed by vocalists and multi-instrumentalists John Davidson and Jacob Bryant, and drummer Trevor Davis, in Birmingham, Alabama. Their name is U.K. slang for a resident of Birmingham. Eternal Reach is a musician’s album, distinguished by inventive arrangements, lush melodies and straight-to-tape production. Perfectly suited for losing yourself beneath a pair of quality headphones, the record evokes the psych-rock vibe of the Sixties and the soft indie-folk of the Nineties, yet possesses a timeless sound all its own. The band is currently located in Nashville, Tennessee.]

Bill Sundahl & KKFI’s 30th Anniversary! + Out Here Now – Kansas City LGBT Film Festival
with: Jamie Rich, Austin Williams, Lea Hopkins, Stuart Hinds, Savannah Rodgers, & Philip blue owl Hooser
.

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / 1980
[WMM’s theme song]

2. Sunflower Bean – “I Was a Fool”
from: Twentytwo in Blue / Mom + Pop / March 23, 2018
[3-piece rock band from Glen Head, New York and Brooklyn founded in 2013. The band consists of Nick Kivlen (lead guitar and vocals), Jacob Faber (drums), and Julia Cumming (bass and lead vocals). The group has released two albums, Human Ceremony (Fat Possum Records, 2016) and Twentytwo in Blue (Mom + Pop Music, 2018). The band’s appearance at the 2014 CMJ Music Marathon received good notices from All Songs Considered’s Bob Boilen and from The New York Times’s Jon Pareles, who wrote “New York is still home to bands as varied as Sunflower Bean, whose music suggests what might have happened if psychedelia had emerged after punk and the Police rather than before.” They released their first EP, ‘’Show Me Your Seven Secrets’’, initially through their Bandcamp page on January 5, 2015, and later via Fat Possum Records. The EP, which features the singles “Tame Impala” and “2013”, was called “astonishingly good” by the NME. (The band, fans of Tame Impala, had named a song after the Australian combo, noting that Tame Impala itself had named a song “Led Zeppelin”.) Cumming provided a good description of the band’s sound at the time to i-D: “We used to call it ‘neo-psychedelia for the digital age’, and now we’ve just been calling it ‘night music’, however someone may take that. It’s like if Black Sabbath mixed with The Smiths, maybe?” The band – then as now – toured relentlessly, gaining themselves the title of New York City’s “hardest-working band” in 2014); they still tour extensively today, both as headliners and as openers for bands like Pixies, Wolf Alice, DIIV, Foxygen, Best Coast, Cherry Glazerr and Sleigh Bells.]

[Sunflower Bean plays recordBar, Tuesday, June 26, with Public Access T.V., and Instant Karma.]

3. Shy Boys – “Take The Doggie”
from: Bell House / Polyvinyl Record Co. / August 3, 2018
[Shy Boys are an American indie-pop band from Kansas City, Missouri. The line-up consists of brothers Collin Rausch and Kyle Rausch, Konnor Ervin, Kyle Little and Ross Brown. The group formed shortly after the trio became roommates in 2012. Kyle Rausch and Konnor Ervin were already band mates in the indie-pop band The ACBs and Collin had been playing for years in the Kansas City area in various bands. The three shared a love for 1960s era pop rock and soon started writing their own music. In 2014 they released the self-titled Shy Boys on High Dive Records. The album received generally positive reviews and the single “Bully Fight” was featured on Spin.com. In June 2014 the band recorded and released two more singles and one of them, “Life Is Peachy,” was featured on Stereogum. On April 4th, 2018, it was announced that the band had signed to Polyvinyl Record Co. They will be releasing their sophomore album, Bell House on August 3rd, 2018. The first single from the album, “Take the Doggie” and an accompanying lyric video were released on June 5, 2018. In 2011 we started playing songs from The I’ms, a duo made of up Collin and Kyle, who posted 6 of their self recorded songs on their Facebook page. We included this informal release in our Top Ten of The 111 Best Recordings of 2011.]

[Shy Boys plays a Record Release Show, Sat, August 4, at 8:00 PM at recordBar, 1520 Grand, KCMO.]

4. Approach – “The Luv (Clean Edit)”
from: Elegant Knock / Datura Records / January 20, 2017
[Lawrence based Sean Hunt is Approach. Sequenced, Produced, Recorded, Mixed & Mastered By: Aikido Bray at Prosidio Gardens in Lawrence. Sean Hunt writes: “Elegant Knock” started out as a beat album named after a production night I throw in Lawrence. It turned into a 10 track album that pays respect to a sound & vibe that I loved in High School. It isn’t a throwback project, it’s a “why aren’t we still freaking these sounds now” thang. My original concept was flipped when I dug out my old Ensoniq EPS 16+ and started funking around. The next thing I knew I was making an album I wanted to rap on. I did all of the production on the EPS (everything and it’s was headache) and made a few mixing edits on the Ensoniq ASR-10 (mainly stereo pans). I pushed myself to use the tools of yesteryear to capture the feeling I was seeking out (it was a pain in the ass and I lost a ton of beats in the process). I loved every second of it though. I feel like it’s the perfect bridge between my Lincoln Marshall project with Milkdrop and my album “Antique Mall” (coming soon).]

[Approach plays the I Heart Local Music – The Magazine Launch Party, Friday, June 22 at 7:00 PM at Jackpot Music Hall, with The Bad Ideas and CS Luxem.]

5. Melody’s Echo Chamber – “Breathe in, Breathe Out”
from: Bon Voyage / Fat Possum Records / June 15, 2018
[Melody’s Echo Chamber is the main project of French musician Melody Prochet. When Prochet’s previous project My Bee’s Garden supported Tame Impala on their European tour in 2010, Prochet collaborated with Kevin Parker to produce her new solo material as Melody’s Echo Chamber. The material was recorded in Parker’s makeshift studio in Perth, Australia and Prochet’s grandmother’s seaside home in the south of France. The self-titled debut album was released on Fat Possum Records in the Fall of 2012. In 2013, the debut album peaked at 61 on the US Billboard Heatseekers Album Chart. Q Magazine gave the album 8/10 calling it an “intoxicating listen that’s well worth experiencing for yourself.” Drowned in Sound’s Dom Gourlay awarded the album 9/10 and stated: “Whatever happens next, she can rest assured safe in the knowledge that together with her beau they’ve conjured up one of 2012’s–or any other year in recent memory–finest debuts.” In October 2014, Melody’s Echo Chamber released “Shirim”, the first single from her upcoming second album. In December 2014, it was announced that Melody’s Echo Chamber would play at Levitation, the 2015 Austin Psych Fest in Austin, Texas but her appearance was later cancelled due to visa issues. In April 2017 Melody Prochet released a new track on YouTube called Cross My Heart and announced a new album called Bon Voyage which she is producing independently. Bon Voyage was set to release in spring of 2017. On Tuesday 27 June 2017, in a statement released by the family of Melody Prochet, it was revealed that Melody had suffered a “serious accident” earlier in June, adding that her upcoming tour would be cancelled. On 3 April 2018, Prochet released the single “Breathe in, Breathe out” accompanied by a music video. She announced via Instagram that Bon Voyage was scheduled to release on June 15, 2018.]

6. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear – “Everybody’s Got Problems”
from: The Radio Winners – EP / Glassnote Records / July 27, 2018
[Second single from their upcoming EP. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear have garnered international acclaim, and new fans from all over the world. They signed with Glassnote Records and recorded their debut full length album in Nashville with acclaimed producer Jim Abiss. They performed their debut single “Silent Movies” on The Late Show with David Letterman, they’ve toured across the United States, and Europe, more than once. They were featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NBC’s The Today Show, and “Later With Jools Holland and played Bonnaroo, Pilgramage, and the Newport Folk Festival, and the Ryman Theatre, in Nashville. Ruth Ward has continually performed throughout her life, mostly in coffee shops and open mics, for over 30 years, even recording a solo record. In the midst of this she got married and became a mom, and was busy raising a family. Madisen Ward was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother, where Madisen grew up watching his mom perform at local coffee shops. Eventually he began to learn to play the guitar, and poured his talent for writing into the music to create original songs. They began playing Madisen’s original songs along with the occasional cover of a classic track, reinterpreted in their own incredibly beautiful performance of two voices and two guitars in harmony and orchestration. Their debut, The Skeleton Crew, was released May 9, 2015 and was our most played record that year and was #1 on WMM’s The 115 Best Recordings of 2015.]

[Madisen Ward and The Mama Bear play Royal Oak Music Theatre in Detroit, Michigan opening for Lake Street Dive, Tuesday June 26, at 7:00 PM.]

7. Jessica Paige – “Night Train”
from: Night Train – Single / Independent / June 1, 2018
[29 year old Jessica Paige moved to Kansas City from Manhattan, Kansas, after caring for her ailing grandmother for several years. She told CJ Janovy of KCUR News. “After she passed away, I started doing music full time, recorded my album and started touring.” Jessica self-produced my first album “Sweet Nothings” with Nashville-based artists and producers. The album is a reflection of the life-cycle of a relationship; the exciting and insecure beginnings to the lamenting demise of something that was once beautiful. The single released from the album, “Beautiful Life,” is a soul-pop reflection of someone trying to reconcile the conflicting emotions of trying to rescue or walk away from a relationship, while still appreciating how beautiful it is to love, regardless of how things turnout. While working on “Sweet Nothings,” Jessica settled in to Kansas City to start working with a full band and laying the groundwork for her next album.]

[Jessica Paige plays a matinee show at Replay Lounge in Lawrence, Sunday, June 24, at 5:00 pm with Carswell and Hope.]

11. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – “Talking Straight”
from: Hope Downs / Sub Pop / June 15, 2018
[Debut full-length album from Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, an Australian indie rock band formed in Melbourne in 2013 by singer-guitarists Fran Keaney, Tom Russo & Joe White. The band’s five members are Keaney, his cousin Joe White, Tom Russo, his brother Joe Russo on bass guitar, and Marcel Tussie on drums. Their debut EP, Talk Tight, was released in 2016 on Ivy League Records. It was followed by their second EP, the French Press, which was mixed by Doug Boehm and released in 2017 on Sub Pop Records. Robert Christgau gave Talk Tight an A grade, writing that “If you like the [guitar] effect—and why not, it’s beautiful—you’ll gravitate to it on sound alone. But what I’m loving at least as much is lyrics that suit the bright white male culture the sound implies.” He also compared the band’s sound to that of the Go-Betweens, a comparison that has also been made by critics like Stephen Deusner.]

12. Laura Veirs – “Seven Falls”
from: The Lookout / Raven Marching Band / April 13, 2018
[Laura Pauline Veirs was born October 24, 1973. She was raised in Colorado. She studied geology and Mandarin Chinese at Carleton College, and worked as a translator for a geological expedition in China. While growing up, she heard folk-country, classical, and pop music at home. However, she didn’t “listen seriously,” she says, until her 20s. At Carleton, she joined an all-girl punk band called Rair Kx!. After graduation, her taste moved to older country and folk, and during her time in China she began writing lyrics. In 1999, Veirs released a self-titled album, which was recorded live and featuring just herself and guitar. 2003 saw the release of Troubled by the Fire, accompanied by veteran musicians such as Bill Frisell. She then signed to Nonesuch and released Carbon Glacier. She also signed to Bella Union for European distribution. Year of Meteors followed in August 2005, and was selected by the New York Times as a “critic’s choice”. Veirs released her last full-length for Nonesuch, Saltbreakers, in 2007. July Flame appeared in January 2010 on her own Raven Marching Band Records. The Washington Post praised it. In November 2011, Veirs released the album Tumble Bee: Laura Veirs Sings Folk Songs for Children. The album presents mostly traditional songs, and features an array of guest musicians, including Colin Meloy, Jim James and Bela Fleck. Tumble Bee won a Parents’ Choice Award in 2012. In September 2012, her first feature film soundtrack was released: Hello I Must Be Going. The exclusive soundtrack features eight instrumental versions of previously released songs, five catalog favorites and one new vocal track, “Spring Song”. In August 2013, she released Warp and Weft. In 2015, she worked on the album Carrie and Lowell by Sufjan Stevens. Veirs husband and long term collaborator Tucker Martine engineered some of the album. Veirs was lead songwriter for the 2016 album case/lang/veirs, a collaborative project between Veirs, k.d. lang and Neko Case. The album received positive reviews. Veirs currently lives in Portland, Oregon. Her husband, Portland-based producer Tucker Martine, has produced her last nine albums, and plays many instruments on the records as well. Their first son, Tennessee Veirs Martine, was born in April 2010. In May 2013 they had a second son, Oz Rhodes Martine. Veirs runs a record label, Raven Marching Band Records, that has released her own and other artists’ music. In 2016, the label released Introducing Karl Blau, which was crowdfunded. In 2007, Veirs said about her lyrics, “I like to be personal in my writing, but not overly confessional.”]

2018 Celebration of Courage Award – Documentary
THE ORDINANCE PROJECT
WORLD PREMIERE SCREENING THUR JUNE 21 | 7:00PM

Be here for the world premiere of a powerful, locally-produced new documentary about the most contested piece of legislation in Kansas City history.

Directed by historian and UMKC Doctoral Candidate, Austin Williams, THE ORDINANCE PROJECT commemorates the 25th anniversary of this landmark event through the voices and personal stories of those who were there. With insightful perspectives on the root of the local gay and lesbian civil rights movement, the film transports you back to the front lines of a life or death struggle within the context of the AIDS epidemic which fanned the flames of homophobia and forced issues of LGBT discrimination to the forefront.

On June 3, 1993, the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri added “sexual orientation” to its civil rights ordinance, capping an epic, three-year civic and political battle. While activists, organizers, politicians, and opponents spent years debating this particular issue, the fight for LGBT civil rights has a much deeper past in KC which continues today.

Austin Williams will offer an Audience Q&A following the screening. Keith Spare, one of the founding members of the KC Human Rights Commission, will also be honored with a Celebration of Courage Award for his many years of service to the LGBT community.

As Austin writes, “it was one of the most highly contested pieces of legislation in Kansas City history. It marked a turning point, after which discrimination against gays and lesbians could no longer be ignored, and it demonstrated how homophobia and the fear of AIDS were not only intertwined — they were inseparable.” More information at http://www.theordinanceproject.com

Austin Williams has been working on an oral history project, Responding to AIDS: Kansas City (1981-1995), and a documentary film, The Ordinance Project. His research focuses on the Kansas City activists and politicians who supported and opposed a series of ordinances introduced in the early 1990s designed to protect gays, lesbians, and people with HIV/AIDS from experiencing discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

Austin has spent the last two and a half years studying Kansas City’s efforts to pass anti-discrimination legislation for members of the LGBT community. With the help of Stuart Hinds and the staff at The Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America (GLAMA), Austin has pored through thousands of primary sources and digitized dozens of hours of VHS footage.

Austin writes, “I have been blessed to meet many of the activists and politicians directly involved in Kansas City’s fight for civil rights. People have invited me into their homes and shared their stories over cups of coffee. THE ORDINANCE PROJECT is our collective effort to capture their memories on film.”

Austin collaborated with UMKC’s Gay & Lesbian Archive of Mid America (GLAMA) and the Kansas City LGBT Film Festival, he is currently working on an oral history project, Responding to AIDS: Kansas City (1981-1995), along with The Ordinance Project.

Austin’s research focuses on the Kansas City activists and politicians who supported and opposed a series of ordinances introduced in the early 1990s designed to protect gays, lesbians, and people with HIV/AIDS from experiencing discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

At the height of the AIDS crisis, the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri debated whether or not to amend its Civil Rights Ordinance to prevent discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and people with HIV/AIDS.

It quickly became the most highly contested piece of legislation in KC’s history, galvanizing both supporters and opponents while exposing a social divide that is still felt today.

The Ordinance Project features interviews with civic leaders such as:

Emanuel Cleaver: US Congressman, former Mayor, former Council Member

Katheryn Shields: City Council Member

14. Romanovsky & Phillips – “Homophobia”
from: Trouble In Paradise / Fresh Fruit Records / 1986
[Romanovsky & Phillips is a gay singing duo named after its members, Ron Romanovsky and Paul Phillips. They are best known for their original recordings and live performances featuring songs combining humor with poignant observations about the lives of gay men (and to a lesser extent, lesbian women) in contemporary American society. Romanovsky & Phillips began their career at San Francisco’s Valencia Rose Cafe in 1982, as the musical break for Gay Comedy Open Mike Night. They mounted their first national tour in the fall of 1983. They toured extensively in the United States, Canada and Australia. Over the years the duo released seven albums under the “Fresh Fruit” label. Sydney Daily Mirror described them as “delightful and entertaining Ambassadors of Homosexuality.” Originally a romantic couple, the two ended that aspect of their relationship in the early 1990s, but continued to record and perform together, describing themselves as “a gay Sonny and Cher” (who had also briefly continued their professional collaboration following their divorce). In 1998 they presented their full-length musical, Jayson, at the 45th Street theatre in New York. A year later the duo decided to take some time off the road. While Phillips put music on hold to pursue other interests, Romanovsky took up a new instrument: the accordion. In 2002 he released a solo album in French, Je m’appelle Dadou. In 2004, Ron was commissioned to write a “circus opera” for Nurses for the Rights of the Child, a group of labor and delivery nurses who are conscientious objectors to male circumcision. After two years of writing and several workshop performances, It’s A Boy! was premiered in August, 2006 at the 9th International Symposium on Circumcision, Genital Integrity and Human Rights at the University of Washington in Seattle. The opera featured music written for accordion, violin and five vocalists. A recording was released concurrently. Immediately following up It’s A Boy! came the release of Pittsburgh to Paris, marking Ron’s return to song writing. In December, 2006, Fresh Fruit Records re-released all of R&P’s recordings. In 2007 Ron returned to the concert stage, this time fronting a four-piece band and performing his newest material along with several updated R&P chestnuts. The year culminated in a sold-out show in Taos, New Mexico, where Ron shared the bill with comic Vicki Shaw. His newest recording, Turn Up the Fun!, released in January 2008, is a return to his queer music roots, offering 14 original tracks featuring the characteristic satire, off-beat observations and poignancy that fans have come to expect. Currently, Romanovsky performs frequently in and around his adopted hometown of Santa Fe with his quartet, “Welcome to Bohemia”.]

TRANS YOUTH
WED JUNE 27 | 5:30PM
Young People 21 & Under Admitted Free
This brave new film follows a handful of young trans in Austin, Texas as they forge and fortify their adult identities. In an early scene, Elliot, a youth with choppy green hair, recounts how their father says trans people are ‘destroying the fabric of America.’ In the next scene, holding their phone in a shaking hand, they tell their mother, their father’s voice in the background, that they’re transgender. While trans identity is more visible than ever — the subject of television shows, talked about in the media, and tied up in controversial legislation — films that take us directly into the lives of trans youth are rare. TRANS YOUTH, by closely following seven different subjects as they navigate both the tumult and the ecstasy of growing up, lets us get to know them as individuals rather than stereotypes. Director Rebecca Adler will attend and offer a Q&A following.

WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY
WED JUNE 27 | 7:45PM
Hermit or sexpot? SNL great Molly Shannon stars as poet and fully lesbian Emily Dickinson in a brilliantly quirky comedy that challenges how history gets recorded. Writer/Director Madeline Olnek restores Dickinson’s true nature as an LGBTQ hero and model for new wave feminism. With the title taken from her raciest poem, WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY sheds new light on the life of famously reclusive poet, revealing her hidden romance with her brother’s wife, and the irreverent side of Dickinson that the world at large never saw. Exploring the fierce rivalry between her brother’s wife and his mistress—who published Dickinson’s poems after her death—the film is also about the struggle to bring to life the work of one of history’s most gifted poets.

15. Thelma Houston – “Don’t Leave Me This Way (Single Version)”
from: Any Way You Like It / Motown / December 2, 1976
[George Benson on guitar. Produced by Hal Davis. “Don’t Leave Me This Way” was covered by Motown in 1976. Originally assigned to Diana Ross, it was intended to be the follow-up to her hit “Love Hangover” but was reassigned and given to the upcoming Motown artist Thelma Houston instead.” Written by Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff and Cary Gilbert. First charting as a hit for Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergrass, an act on Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International label in 1975, “Don’t Leave Me This Way” was later a huge disco hit for Motown artist Thelma Houston in 1977. The song was also a major hit for British group the Communards in 1986. Thelma Houston was born May 7, 1946. She scored a number-one hit in 1977 with her recording of “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, which won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Houston was born in Leland, Mississippi. Her mother was a cotton picker. She and her three sisters grew up primarily in Long Beach, California. After marrying and having two children, she joined the Art Reynolds Singers gospel group and was subsequently signed as a recording artist with Dunhill Records. She is not related to Whitney Houston. In 1969, Houston released her debut album, entitled Sunshower, produced, arranged and composed by Jimmy Webb except for one track. In 1971 she signed with Motown Records but her early recordings with them were largely unsuccessful. Her most notable single during that period was “You’ve Been Doing Wrong for So Long” which peaked at #64 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart in 1974. However Houston’s vocal prowess on that track secured her a nomination for a Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. In 1973 Motown Productions announced a projected biopic of Dinah Washington which would star Houston; however the project was dropped due to difficulties in getting clearance from Washington’s relatives. In April 1974 Houston joined the cast of The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine, playing various characters during the show’s skits. The show was canceled in August and for the next several years her work was limited to demo recordings and performing at small venues. Houston took acting classes and received her first role in the 1975 made-for-television film Death Scream. In that same year Sheffield Lab released “I’ve Got the Music in Me” a Direct to disc recording by Thelma Houston and Pressure Cooker that went on to become a benchmark vinyl recording for audiophiles. The following year she recorded songs for the soundtrack of the film The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings starring Billy Dee Williams and James Earl Jones. In 1975 Houston appeared on the Golden Globe Award broadcast performing the nominated song “On & On” and also was featured in a tribute to Berry Gordy on that year’s American Music Award broadcast singing “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy”. That year Houston’s version of “Do You Know Where You’re Going To” was being set for single release when it was pulled and the song given to Diana Ross to serve as the theme song for the movie Mahogany. In 1976 Houston sang backing vocals for Motown label mate Jermaine Jackson on his album My Name Is Jermaine. Houston released her third album Any Way You Like It in 1976. The first single released was her version of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes’ 1975 song “Don’t Leave Me This Way”. In February 1977 the track hit Number 1 in the U.S. on the R&B and Club Play Singles charts, then in April 1977 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Don’t Leave Me This Way” won Houston the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the Grammys for 1977. Besides its US success “Don’t Leave Me This Way” became a hit in at least twelve countries, including the UK where it reached Number 13 despite the concurrent single release of the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes original, which reached Number 5. Also in 1977 Houston teamed up with Jerry Butler to record the album Thelma & Jerry and that November 1977 she co-starred in the film Game Show Models. It was announced in February 1977 that Houston would star as Bessie Smith in a filmation of the play Me and Bessie, to be produced by Motown; after an announcement that December that Houston was set to portray Bessie Smith in a biopic to be produced in 1978 by Columbia Pictures nothing more was heard of the project.]

3. Janelle Monáe — “Make Me Feel”
from: Dirty Computer / Wondaland Arts Sociaety – Bad Boy – Epic / April 27, 2018
[Janelle Monáe moved from Kansas City, Kansas to New York to study theatre at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Her original plan was to pursue a career on Broadway, but she soon changed her mind and returned to music. After moving to Atlanta, GA, where she met OutKast’s Big Boi, Monáe founded the Wondaland Arts Society with like-minded young artists and made appearances on Outcast’s Idlewild, where Janelle is featured on the songs “Call The Law” and “In Your Dreams”. In 2007, Monáe released her first solo work, titled Metropolis. A few months later she was signed to Sean “Diddy” Combs’ label, Bad Boy Records. Dirty Computer is the third studio album by Janelle Monáe. In October 2016, Monáe made her big screen acting debut in the critically acclaimed film Moonlight. Monáe also starred in the film Hidden Figures. While filming her two movie roles, Monáe remained active in music with features on Grimes’ “Venus Fly” from her Art Angels album and also the soundtrack for the Netflix series The Get Down with a song titled, “Hum Along and Dance (Gotta Get Down)”. She was also on the tracks “Isn’t This the World” and “Jalapeño” for the Hidden Figures soundtrack. In an interview with People, Monáe revealed that she was already working on her third studio album when she received the scripts for her two first acting roles; therefore, she put the album on hold. It was confirmed by Monae after “Make Me Feel” was released that Prince, with whom she collaborated on her preceding album, The Electric Lady, had worked on the single, as well as the entire album, before he passed away. This was confirmed after listeners noticed similarities between the single’s sound and the late musician’s work. Monae stated in an interview with BBC Radio 1: “Prince was actually working on the album with me before he passed on to another frequency, and helped me come up with some sounds. And I really miss him, you know, it’s hard for me to talk about him. But I do miss him, and his spirit will never leave me.”]

The Too Much Rock Singles Series is a collection of 45 rpm singles that marry great songs with great bands all for the love of vinyl. Each old-school two-song single features one unique song paired with one cover chosen by Too Much Rock who press 500 limited edition copies and then simply give them to the band. Schwervon!, Rev Gusto, Josh Berwanger Band, The Uncouth, Hipshot Killer, and Witch Jail have all recorded for the Too Much Rock Single Series. More info at: http://www.toomuchrock.com] [Red Kate is proud to announce the release of a new single on local label, Too Much Rock. As with all records in the Singles Series, this old-school, 45 rpm ripper contains one original track and one cover selected by the label. Side A, Iraqi Girl, is a grinding statement on American foreign policy, while side B follows suit with a cover of the TSOL song, American Zone. This frank indictment of how we treat those sent off to impose that foreign policy is as relevant today as it was in 1984. American Zone marks the first recording with the band’s newest member, rhythm guitarist Shaun Hamontree, whose contribution to the effort also includes his arresting, if not disturbing, cover art invoking the devastating reality of a war widow’s scrap book.] [Both tracks were recorded at Weight and Measures Soundlab where engineer Duane Trower and producer L. 3. David Byrne – “Gasoline and Dirty Sheets”
from: American Utopia / Todomundo – Nonesuch / March 9, 2018
[Co written with Brian Eno. David Byrne’s first solo studio album since 2004’s Grown Backwards. Even though since then he has released albums with Brian Eno, Fat Boy Slim, and St. Vincent. The album is his 11th outside of his work with Talking Heads. The new album is one part of a larger multimedia project entitled Reasons to Be Cheerful which aims to give reasons for being happy and optimistic in spite of political strife and environmental problems. The project was entitled after the Ian Dury song “Reasons to Be Cheerful (Part 3)”. David Byrne writes: “Is this meant ironically? Is it a joke? Do I mean this seriously? In what way? Am I referring to the past or the future? Is it personal or political? These songs don’t describe an imaginary or possibly impossible place but rather attempt to depict the world we live in now. Many of us, I suspect, are not satisfied with that world—the world we have made for ourselves. We look around and we ask ourselves—well, does it have to be like this? Is there another way? These songs are about that looking and that asking. This album is indirectly about those aspirational impulses. Sometimes to describe is to reveal, to see other possibilities. To ask a question is to begin the process of looking for an answer. To be descriptive is also to be prescriptive, in a way. The act of asking is a big step. The songs are sincere—the title is not ironic. The title refers not to a specific utopia, but rather to our longing, frustration, aspirations, fears, and hopes regarding what could be possible, what else is possible. The description, the discontent and the desire—I have a feeling that is what these songs touch on. I have no prescriptions or surefire answers, but I sense that I am not the only one looking and asking, wondering and still holding onto some tiny bit of hope, unwilling to succumb entirely to despair or cynicism.”]

[David Byrne plays the Muriel Kauffman Theatre at the Kauffman Center for The Performing Arts, Thursday, June 7, at 7:30 PM.]

Joe Stanziola on the June 6, 2018 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley on 90.1 FM.

Joe Stanziola performs and records as Second Hand King, the original Doo Wop Rapper. His name was derived from a 1966 Doo Wop song, “The Joker Went Wild” by Brian Hyland. Joe’s been exploring the connections between Doo Wop and Hip Hop since he released his The Santa Sangre EP in 2011. Joe followed that up with five more albums: All My Fears (2012), The Lower Depths (2013), Chuck (2014), Before The Bomb Drops (2015), and Almost Blue (2016). Joe is set to release his 6th full length album, Frankie when Second Hand King & The Lovers play a “FRANKIE” album release show, Saturday, June 9 at 7:00 PM, at recordBar, 1520 Grand, with Black Mariah Theater, Rockababyrock & Tyler Banks, along with Dj Peter Anthony.

Joe Stanziola thank you for being with us on WMM.

First off, a Doo-Wop Tutorial from Wikipedia.org:

Doo-Wop – origins: Rhythm and blues harmony vocal groups a cappella negro spirituals barbershop music gospel ballads blues jump blues swing

Doo Wop – Derivative forms: Beach music beat Brill Building pop rock power pop soul vocal surf

Doo-wop is a genre of rhythm and blues music that was developed in African-American communities in the East Coast of the United States in the 1940s, achieving mainstream popularity in the 1950s and early 1960s. Built upon vocal harmony, doo-wop was one of the most mainstream, pop-oriented styles of the time. Singer Bill Kenny is often called the “Godfather of Doo-wop” for his introducing the “top and bottom” format which featured a high tenor singing the lead and a bass singer reciting the lyrics in the middle of the song. Doo-wop features vocal group harmony, nonsense syllables, a simple beat, sometimes little or no instrumentation, and simple music and lyrics

From the outset, singers gathered on street corners, and in subways, generally in groups of three to six. They sang a cappella arrangements, and used wordless onomatopeia to mimic instruments since instruments were little used: the bass singing “bom-bom-bom”, a guitar rendered as “shang-a-lang” and brass riffs as “dooooo -wop-wop”. For instance, “Count Every Star” by The Ravens (1950), includes vocalizations imitating the “doomph, doomph” plucking of a double bass. This art dates to The Mills Brothers, who first came to fame in the 1930s with their mimicking of instrumental music. Radio, gramophone, and cinema inspired imitation in many U.S. cities.

The late 1940s and early 1950s brought the so-called “bird groups”; The Swallows, the Ravens, The Orioles, The Penguins, The Crows, The Flamingos, The Blue Jays, The Cardinals, and The Larks. A number of band names are also drawn from cars (The Edsels, The Cadillacs, The Fleetwoods, The Impalas, and Little Anthony and the Imperials). The Orioles helped develop the doo-wop sound with their hits “It’s Too Soon to Know” (1948) and “Crying in the Chapel” (1953). Doo-wop scored 1951 R&B chart hits such as “Sixty Minute Man” by Billy Ward and His Dominoes, “Where Are You?” by The Mello-Moods, “The Glory of Love” by The Five Keys, “Shouldn’t I Know” by The Cardinals, “I Will Wait” by the Four Buddies, and “Will You Be Mine”, by The Swallows.

The term “doo-wop” first appeared in print in 1961 in The Chicago Defender; fans of the music coined the term during the height of a vocal harmony resurgence. The phrase was attributed to radio disc jockey Gus Gossert but Gossert suggested “doo-wop(p) was already in use [before me] to categorize the music in California.”

The first record to use the syllables “doo-wop” in the refrain was the 1955 hit “When You Dance” by The Turbans (Herald Records H-458). Previously, the backing vocal “doo-wop” is heard in The Delta Rhythm Boys’ 1945 recording of “Just A-Sittin’ And A-Rockin”, The Clovers’ 1953 release “Good Lovin'” (Atlantic Records 1000) and in the chorus of Carlyle Dundee & The Dunde

1958 also saw the rise of Italian American doo-wop groups. Like African-Americans, the Italian Americans generally attended church, where they gained singing experience, and lived in urban neighborhoods, where they would sing on street corners. By the late 1950s, Italian American street corner doo-wop groups were seen in cities such as New York, especially the Bronx and Brooklyn. Some of the Italian American groups with national chart hits included: Dion and the Belmonts, in 1958, with “I Wonder Why”, and Top #5 hits “Teenager in Love” and “Where or When”; The Four Seasons; The Capris with “There’s a Moon Out Tonight”, in 1960; The Earls; The Chimes; The Demensions; The Elegants; The Mystics; The Duprees; Vito & the Salutations; The Gaylords; Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge; The Regents; Nino and the Ebb Tides; The Del-Satins; The Videls; most of the members of The Passions; and The Chaperones. Other Italian American groups included Randy & the Rainbows, who charted with their Top #10 1963 single “Denise”.

The contribution of Hispanics is often overlooked. Early, especially in U.S. East Coast cities, Puerto Ricans were lead singers in some groups with black and white members, including The Crests, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, the Five Discs and the Tune Weavers. “Racially integrated” groups with both black and white performers, included The Del-Vikings, who hit big in 1957 with “Come Go With Me” and “Whispering Bells”; The Crests, whose “16 Candles” appeared in 1958, and The Impalas, whose “Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home)” was a hit in 1959. All-white doo-wop groups were also appearing: The Mello-Kings’ 1956 “Tonight, Tonight” and The Diamonds’ chart-topping “Little Darlin'” in 1957, The Skyliners’ 1959 “Since I Don’t Have You” and 1960 “This I Swear”, The Tokens’ 1961 “Tonight I Fell In Love” and “I Love My Baby”, all saw success.

Female doo wop singers were unusual in the early days. Lillian Leach, lead singer of the Mellows from 1953 to 1958, helped pave the way for women and is often cited as an influence by later performers.

The peak of doo-wop might have been in the early 1960s with the most notable hits being Dion’s “Runaround Sue”, “The Wanderer”, “Lovers Who Wander” and “Ruby Baby” and The Marcels’ “Blue Moon”. There was a revival of the nonsense-syllable form of doo-wop in the early 1960s, with popular records by The Marcels, The Rivingtons, and Vito & the Salutations. A few years later, the genre reached the self-referential stage, with songs about the singers (“Mr. Bass Man” by Johnny Cymbal) and the songwriters (“Who Put the Bomp?” by Barry Mann), in 1961. Other important groups, including The Coasters, The Drifters, The Midnighters, and The Platters, helped link the doo-wop style to the mainstream, and to the future sound of soul music. The style is heard in the music of The Miracles, particularly in their early hits such as “Got A Job” (an answer song to “Get a Job”), “Bad Girl”, “Who’s Loving You”, “(You Can) Depend on Me”, and “Ooo Baby Baby”. The style is also heard in the early days of The Famous Flames, led by James Brown; the group recorded several doo-wop hits, including “Please, Please, Please”, “Bewildered”, “I Don’t Mind”, and their hit cover of The “5” Royales’ “Think all entering the Top#10, as well as R&B Number #1 Try Me

Doo-wop’s influence continued in soul, pop, and rock groups of the 1960s, including The Four Seasons, girl groups, and vocal surf music performers such as Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys. In the Beach Boys’ case, the doo-wop influence is evident in early hits such as “Surfin'” and “Surfer Girl”, and in albums recorded within their psychedelic era, during which the group experimented and innovated with the human voice as an instrument[15] in a self-described effort to “expand modern vocal harmony”.

As with most American popular music genres of the time, doo-wop’s mainstream popularity was decimated by the British Invasion of the mid-1960s

Joe Stanziola grew up in Kansas.

At the Age of 16 he first heard Tupac, it changed his life.

Born December 19, 1989 his parents wrote him a rap upon his birth.

Joe says that “At my core, I am a rapper.”

Joe confesses to be “a little bit of a loner.”

Joe didn’t like school.

In his search to find himself Joe discovered doo-wop with the Gene Chandler song “Duke of Earl”

Joe has listened to so much doo-wop it is now just part of him, he has no choice. Doo-wop is his “guiding light.”

Joe is now working with a band.

Frankie is a “coming out” moment.

8. Joni Mitchell – “You Turn Me On I’m A Radio”
from: For The Roses / Asylum / November 1972
[Joni Mitchell originally wrote the song in response to her record label’s desire for her to write a hit song. Mitchell reveals her purpose on lines such as, “And I’m sending you out this signal here, I hope you can pick it up loud and clear”. She believed that including words in the song about radio themes would convince stations to play the recording. The song was recorded in preparation for Mitchell’s upcoming fifth studio album in Hollywood, California, United States at A&M Studios. Although Graham Nash, David Crosby, and Neil Young all contributed to the recording session for the song, only the harmonica piece performed by Graham Nash was included on the official release. “You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio” was released as a single in November 1972 via Asylum Records. The song became Mitchell’s first top-ten hit in Canada, reaching the tenth position on the RPM Top Singles chart. Additionally, the single became her first top-forty hit in the United States, reaching number twenty-five on the Billboard Hot 100. Outside North America, “You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio” peaked within the top-forty on the Australian Kent Music Report chart. The single was included on Mitchell’s fifth studio effort For the Roses, which was issued in November 1972. Released between her 2 biggest commercial and critical successes – “Blue” and “Court & Spark”. In 2007 it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. “For the Roses” was Mitchell’s farewell to the business; she took an extended break for a year after. The album was critically acclaimed with The New York Times saying “Each of Mitchell’s songs on For the Roses is a gem glistening with her elegant way with language, her pointed splashes of irony & her perfect shaping of images. Never does Mitchell voice a thought or feeling commonly. She’s a songwriter and singer of genius who can’t help but make us feel we are not alone.”]

12. Belle Plaine – “Golden Ring (feat. Megan Nash) – Single”
from: Malice, Mercy, Grief and Wrath / Belle Plaine / To Be Peleased Soon
[Belle Plaine is a singer, a songwriter and an inventive musician who was raised on the Canadian prairies near the hamlet of Fosston, Saskatchewan – population: 54. Belle’s reverence for artists who defy categorization has led her to create a brand of roots music that combines vintage blues and swing tones of the 1940s with classic country styles made popular in the heyday of the Grand Ole Opry. In 2015 she appeared as a guest vocalist on Colter Wall’s breakthrough debut album, Imaginary Appalachia. In 2016 she performed her work with the Regina Symphony Orchestra. She comtributed as a songwriter and harmony-vocalist on Blake Berglund’s 2017 album, Realms.]

11:17 – Interview with Belle Plaine, Blake Berglund & Nadia Piotrowsky

Blake Berglund, Belle Plaine, and Nadia Piotrowsky on the June 6, 2018 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley on KKFI 90.1 FM.

Kansas raised, Oklahoma based, Nadia Piotrowsky who performs as summerland, joins us today and she has brought along her singer-songwriter friends from Saskatchewan, Canada, Belle Plaine and Blake Berglund who have been embraced by the Red Dirt and Americana communities as evidenced by a slot at this year’s Tumbleweed Festival in La Cygne, KS, and an eight date tour along side summerland that includes Kansas City. American Media Gig Spot presents: An Evening with summerland, Blake Berglund & Belle Plaine, at SqueezeBox Theatre, 1519 Oak St, KCMO, on Friday, June 8, at 8:00 pm.

Belle Plaine, Blake Berglund & Nadia Piotrowsky, Thanks for being with us on WMM.

Belle Plaine is a singer, a songwriter and an inventive musician who was raised on the Canadian prairies near the hamlet of Fosston, Saskatchewan – population: 54.

We just heard “Golden Ring,” the first single from her upcoming LP Malice, Mercy, Grief and Wrath and is in collaboration with fellow Saskatchewanian, Megan Nash. True to Plaine’s genre-bending style, the song pairs a surf-era baritone guitar to an Everly Brothers inspired harmony.

Belle Plaine, Blake Berglund have split their time in the last year between Canada and the Appalachians promoting Berglund’s 2017 release, Realms, and have been direct support for Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, The Dead South, Jason Eady and Dwight Yoakam.

Plaine appeared on Colter Wall’s Imaginary Appalachia (2015) and serves up a hybrid of American music: her mix of folk, country, jazz and blues was showcased at Folk Alliance International in February 2017 and at Americana Fest in September 2017 to a full house at Nashville’s 12th and Porter.

13. summerland (Nadia Piotrowsky) – “Kentucky”
from: Fourth Street Session / Nadia Piotrowsky /
[Oklahoma based singer songwriter Nadia Piotrowsky performs as summerland. Post-college adventures in Nashville, bumps and bruises from jobs and relationships, and a move to Los Angeles in the last couple of years have inspired the melodies and lyrics that now pour out of her. Her folk-rock tales are accompanied by the sounds and rhythms of the guitar that she learned to play while sitting on the porch of her college home in Manhattan, Kansas. Various music projects with friends have led to her current project “Summerland,” which is Nadia’s first official lead role in her own musical story. Standing on the stage with her own band, made up of various talented friends from L.A.]

Berglund’s album, Realms, has carved out its place among critics. Beatroute Magazine called it “the most ambitious Canadian country record of 2017 and should certainly be regarded as one of the best,” where popular online blog, Bandsintown says “Berglund’s psychedelic country is changing the game.” Realms applies the story arc of the hero’s journey to a good ol’ boy character – the listener follows the Everyman from ignorance to enlightenment, and eventually to reincarnation. Berglund has released four videos that compliment this storyline, the latest being the stunning “Moose Mountain” where Berglund appears amidst his homeland’s eautiful scenery on horseback enjoying a tightly rolled doobie.

15. Blake Berglund – “Crooked Old Earth”
from: Realms / Oceanman Records / September 1, 2017
[Blake Berglund’s fresh style of country music is unpredictable, intelligent, genuine, and a pleasant surprise, given his hard-rock/pseudo metal background. His grassroots approach has earned him a reputation as ‘the guy who sold 10,000 CDs door-to-door.” Raised in the Moose Mountains deep in Saskatchewan’s south east corner, Berglund took his early childhood responsibilities of tending to 200 head of horses as the education needed to base his music career around hard work and cultivating relationships. Berglund’s album was released through his independently owned and operated, Oceanman Records. Described as an allegorical concept record about the ‘breadth of the human experience’, the ten track album explores spiritual based themes, alternative beliefs, and universal truths. Inspired by the teachings, observations and research of Thomas P. Fusco, Dr. Rick Strassman, and authors Joseph Campbell and C.S. Lewis, Realms follows an ancient story-telling archetype and is riddled with patterns, puzzles and nuances. Berglund is self-managed and booked. He’s gained supporters world-wide based on his work ethic, out of the box marketing and unique musical style.]

16. Jim Nabors – “It Takes All Kinds To Make The World Go Round”

An urban legend maintains that Nabors married Rock Hudson in the early ’70s, shortly before Nabors began his relationship with Cadwallader. At least publicly, the two were never more than friends. According to Hudson, the legend originated with a group of “middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach” who sent out joke invitations for their annual get-together. One year, the group invited its members to witness “the marriage of Rock Hudson & Jim Nabors,” at which Hudson would take the surname of Nabors’ most famous character, Gomer Pyle, becoming “Rock Pyle.” Those who failed to get the joke spread the rumor. Hudson was also gay but closeted, and because of the fear that one or both of them might be outed, Nabors & Hudson never spoke to each other again. Jim Nabors passed away on November 30, 2017 at 87.]

10:45 – “Just say the lines and don’t bump into the furniture.”

I think my parents had a tougher time hearing that I wanted to become a Theatre Major than when I told them I was Gay. Please know, that I believe the theatre is full of all sexual orientations, straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender…just like the rest of the world. The theatre, however, is Queer friendly, accepting of LGBTQIA, it has always been a place where so many gay kids found their freedom and identity. The theatre gave gay kids their first glimpse into a world not found in their sheltered, small towns. Here in this next set is a song from Noel Coward from a album I found in my college library my freshman year. The plays of Noel Coward were captivating to me, the lyrics, wit, and diction of Noel Coward in action, is a treat.

After Noel we’ll hear Paul Lynde from the Original Broadway Cast Recording of “Bye Bye Birdie,” followed by Charles Nelson Reilly talking about his experience in “Bye Bye Birdie” while auditioning for “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”
Charles Nelson Reilly was playing three parts in Bye Bye Birdie winner of The Tony Award for Best Musical of 1960. How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying won the Tony for Best Musical in 1961 and Reilly won The Tony for his portrayal of Bud Frump.

19. Noel Coward – “What’s Going To Happen To the Tots”
from: Noel Coward in New York / drg / 2003 [orig. 1957] [Born Dec. 16, 1899 / died Mar. 26, 1973. English playwright, composer, director, actor and singer, known for his wit, flamboyance, and what Time magazine called “a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise”. Coward did not publicly acknowledge his homosexuality, but it was discussed candidly after his death by biographers including Graham Payn, his long-time partner, and in Coward’s diaries & letters, published posthumously.]

20. Paul Lynde & Marijane Maricle -“Kids”
from: Bye Bye Birdie! (Original Broadway Cast) / / 1960
[Paul Lynde’s sexual orientation was an open secret in Hollywood, although, in keeping with the prejudices of the time, it was not acknowledged or discussed in public. In a 2013 radio interview, Dick Van Dyke recalled the wrap party for Bye Bye Birdie. A series of men gave short speeches, each one praising Ann-Margret and predicting success and stardom for the young actress. When it was Paul Lynde’s turn to speak, he began, “Well, I guess I’m the only one here who doesn’t want to fuck Ann-Margret.” In 1965, Lynde was involved in an accident in which a young actor, reputed to be his lover, fell to his death from the window of their hotel room in San Francisco’s Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The two had been drinking for hours before 24-year-old James “Bing” Davidson slipped and fell eight stories, an event witnessed by two policemen, yet the event was largely kept out of the press, thus saving Lynde’s career. Despite his campy television persona, Lynde never publicly came out as gay and the press generally refrained from commenting about it. In 1976, a People magazine article on Lynde featured him and Stan Finesmith; the latter was dubbed Lynde’s “suite mate” and “chauffeur-bodyguard.” In the 1970s, this was as close as the press would come to hinting at his sexuality.]

I heart Local Music is throwing an event during PRIDE month to celebrate the queer musicians in our community. This is open to ALL AGES.

FEATURING PERFORMANCES FROM:

Vibralux
Wick & The Tricks
Calvin Arsenia
Cuee
Yanna the supa flowa

There will be performances from drag queens (including MsAmanda Love!) & queer DJs.

I Heart Local Music notes: “As a straight entity, WE WILL NOT BE PROFITING FROM THIS EVENT. The only people who will be making money are the QUEER PERFORMERS and QUEER STAFF (The Jackpot will hire queer audio engineers and bar staff). This event is FOR queer members of our community, and they will be the only ones who turn a profit as a result. We feel this is an important aspect to maintain in Pride events, as many queer readers have messaged us and expressed concern that too many straight entities turn a profit from queer-targeted events. So we curated this festival to rectify that. Because we love you.”

Many thanks to Ladybird Diner, Salon Blush, and Jackpot Music Hall for helping sponsor this event to make sure our queer performers are paid.

[Supa Flowa, also known as Yanna, is a multi-media artist and rapper currently based out of Kansas City. The Supa Flowa Ep is a very vulnerable, yet an uplifting play on Yanna’s experience in dealing with anxiety, self doubt, and becoming comfortable with the androgynous, “sunflower dyke” that she is. Her goal is to reach out to queer and LGBTQIA youth; who have endured similar experiences to hers, in finding and cultivating self love and peace of mind.]

from: “Honey”- Single / Cuee / November 27, 2017
[Cuee is a Chicago rap artist currently in Lawrence. Fally Afani writes in I Heart Local Music: Your 2017 local queer anthem is here, and we are screaming. Cuee’s “Honey” features local trans songstress Micha Anne, and it’s blasting confidence all over our speakers. LISTEN TO US. This is the track you put on when you’re gussying up for a night of raging on the Replay dance floor. In the song, Micha encourages us to “work it out,” “get sexy now,” and just “slay.” Then, Cuee (always the charmer) pops in, proudly proclaims “I’m brown skinned, I like action” and that she could “pull your girl without askin’.” We’re already a hot mess. 2017 has been such a shit year and we need this unapologetic happiness right now. Together, Cuee and Micha Anne are looking good and slaying. They are our guiding lights in dark times, and we are going to sissy that walk when we follow them into the new frontier. If this is the future of music, sign us up. We are here for it.]

[“Comeback” is the first single from SSION’s forthcoming LP, O. SSION (pronounced “shun”) is a multifaceted creative project spearheaded by Cody Critcheloe. An art-punk act fronted by flamboyant vocalist/artist Cody Critcheloe, Ssion recorded a series of underground releases during the 2000s, yet were perhaps best recognized for their extravagant live show. Ssion (pronounced “shun”) were founded in Kansas City, MO, by Critcheloe, who studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, and draw from a range of influences, including the punk spectacle of Iggy Pop and the dance-party new wave of the B-52’s as well as performance art and gay culture. Critcheloe’s artwork graces the cover of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Fever to Tell (2003) and the video for Liars’ “There’s Always Room on the Broom” (2004). Besides Critcheloe, Ssion’s membership includes, among others, backup vocalists Taylor Painter-Wolfe and Shannon Michaels, who respectively create costumes and stage props for the act’s live shows. Philip Blue owl Hooser and Chris McCoy Thanks for being with us on WMM.

Torch Song Trilogy — Written by Harvey Fierstein — Presented by The Barn Players,
at The Arts Asylum, 1000 East 9th Street, KCMO, May 31 through June 10.

Torch Song Trilogy is constructed of three moving plays told over three acts: International Stud, Fugue in a Nursery, and Widows and Children First! The life of Arnold Beckoff, a torch song-singing, Jewish drag queen living in New York City is dramatized over the span of the late 1970s and 1980s, through Stonewall, the AIDS crisis, and other ground-breaking milestones for the LGBT community. Told with a likable, human voice, Arnold struggles through love, disease, and the challenges of child-rearing. In the tradition of The Normal Heart and The Pride, and one of the pre-cursors for the seminal Angels in America, this award-winning and popular work broke new ground in the theatre: “At the height of the post-Stonewall clone era, Harvey challenged both gay and straight audiences to champion an effeminate gay man’s longings for love and family.”

CAST
Arnold – Philip blue own Hooser
Ed – Derrick Freeman
Laurel – Jennifer Loumiet
Alan – Brent Custer
Ma – Elle DeShon
David – Alex Leondedis
Lady Blues – Shelby Bessette & Lynn McCutchen
Ensemble – Sam Hoffman

The award-winning and popular work broke new ground in the theatre: “At the height of the post-Stonewall clone era, Harvey challenged both gay and straight audiences to champion an effeminate gay man’s longings for love and family.”

The first act derives its name (International Stud) from an actual gay bar of the same name at 117 Perry Street in Greenwich Village in the 1960s and 1970s. The bar had a backroom where men engaged in anonymous sex. The backroom plays a central role in the act.

Plot 1971: Arnold (Harvey Fierstein), a New York City female impersonator, meets Ed (Brian Kerwin), a bisexual schoolteacher, and they fall in love. Ed, however, is uncomfortable with his sexuality and he leaves Arnold for a girlfriend, Laurel.

1973-79: During Christmas, Arnold meets the love of his life, a male model named Alan. They settle down together, later spending a weekend with Ed and Laurel in the country, where their relationship is tested but endures. Eventually, they apply to foster a child together with a view to adoption, and their application is eventually successful and so they move to a bigger apartment. However, on their first night at their new home, Alan is killed in a homophobic attack.

1980: Months later, in the spring of 1980, Arnold’s mother comes to visit from Florida, but her visit leads to a long-overdue confrontation. Arnold’s mother disapproves of Arnold’s homosexuality and his planned adoption of a gay teenage son, David (Eddie Castrodad), as well as Arnold’s use of their family burial plot for Alan. They have a series of arguments where Arnold demands that she accept him for who he is, insisting that if she can’t then she has no place in his life. The following morning, before she returns to Florida, they have a conversation where, for the first time, they seem to understand each other. With both David and Ed (who is now more mature and settled) in his life, and a successful new career creating his own stage revue, Arnold’s life is finally complete.

Date premiered – January 15, 1982

1983 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play
1983 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play (Harvey Fierstein)
1983 Tony Award for Best Play (Harvey Fierstein)
1983 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play (Harvey Fierstein)

The central character of this play, Arnold, is a sharp-tongued, nurturing, compassionate, vulnerable, and he is someone who is unable to act normal around his mother, his lovers, and his adopted son because he loves each so dearly. This play allows readers to look beyond the invisible cultural assumptions and make it a comfortable experience. A teacher from a high school in Texas decided to add Torch Song Trilogy in his curriculum. This play was particularly important to teach due to the comfort that society feels in being silent about subjects relating to sexuality. The teacher is convinced that silence can only hurt chances of young adults who are emerging whole during their school years. This play was chosen to educate the students that love comes in all forms. Not only did this play help expand conservative minds, but the play is magically structured so that the audience is invited to build a dialogue with the onstage characters. The writing of this play is innovative and the structure of the play itself is unique that it offers ideas for students to explore and expand their ideas on how to creatively write.

The theme of this play is love, which is a universal language. Although the teacher in Houston, thought that conventional parents would be opposed to the idea that their children are learning about homosexuality, most were open to the idea and spoke about real-life experiences their friends have lived through or they have seen. The student’s parents helped their children to try to understand a world where the heterosexuals were the ones being treated the way the homosexuals were. Some students spoke about their friend’s experiences about various sexual preferences and how this play helped them understand that homosexuality is not something to be afraid of. The risk of teaching this type of story was much less than expected. This play provides a forum to explore the differences between the taboo topics of sexual orientation and gender. The difference between sexism and homophobia is distinguished as well as identifying gender roles and the society’s preconceived notion of what a “drag”, “trans”, “gay”, “lesbian” “questioning”, “a-sexual” might be. Most of these students were a group of twenty-one-year-olds, who are politically correct, but there was concern that arose about teaching this type of literature in a public high school setting.

Fierstein adapted his play for a feature film, released in 1988. It was directed by Paul Bogart and starred Fierstein (Arnold), Anne Bancroft (Ma Beckoff), Matthew Broderick (Alan), Brian Kerwin (Ed), and Eddie Castrodad (David).

29. David Bowie – “Rebel Rebel”
from: A Reality Tour / ISO – Columbia – Legacy / January 25, 2010
[Recorded November 22-23, 2003, Point Theatre, Dublin, Ireland. Originally written for a mooted Ziggy Stardust musical in late 1973, “Rebel Rebel” was Bowie’s last single in the glam rock style that had been his trademark. The song is notable for its gender-bending lyrics (“You got your mother in a whirl / She’s not sure if you’re a boy or a girl”) as well as its distinctive riff, which rock journalist Kris Needs has described as “a classic stick-in-the-head like the Stones’ ‘Satisfaction'”.Transsexual rock artist and former Bowie associate Jayne County claims that “Rebel Rebel” was based in part on County’s own song “Queenage Baby”, which was recorded in January 1974 by Bowie’s Mainman Records, but not released at the time. The song later surfaced on the independent 2006 release Wayne County at the Trucks, and some critics, upon hearing the track, echoed County’s claims. The 2004, live version features David Bowie – vocals, guitars, stylophone, harmonica; Earl Slick – guitar; Gerry Leonard – guitar; Gail Ann Dorsey – bass guitar, backing vocals, lead vocals on “Under Pressure”; Sterling Campbell – drums; Mike Garson – keyboards, piano; Catherine Russell – keyboards, percussion, acoustic guitar, backing vocals. A Reality Tour was a worldwide concert tour by David Bowie in support of the Reality album. The tour commenced on 7 October 7, 2003 at the Forum, Copenhagen, Denmark continuing through Europe, North America, Asia, including a return to New Zealand and Australia for the first time since the 1987 Glass Spider Tour. The tour grossed $46,000,000, making it the ninth-highest grossing tour of 2004. At over 110 shows, the tour was the longest tour of Bowie’s career. Bowie played Kansas City, May 10, 2004, at Starlight Theatre. I was there, seven rows from the stage.]

from: Songs For Drella / Sire – Warner Bros. / 1990
[Dedicated to the memory of Andy Warhol, their mentor, who had died unexpectedly in 1987. Drella was a nickname for Warhol coined by Warhol Superstar Ondine, a contraction of Dracula and Cinderella, used by Warhol’s crowd. The song cycle focuses on Warhol’s interpersonal relations and experiences, with songs falling roughly into three categories: Warhol’s first-person perspective (which makes up the vast majority of the album), third-person narratives chronicling events and affairs, and first-person commentaries on Warhol by Reed and Cale themselves. The songs on the album are, to some extent, in chronological order.]

[“These Things Take Time” (12 “b-side of “What Difference Does It Make?”)Included in Hatful of Hollow. The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. The band consisted of vocalist Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce. Critics have called them one of the most important bands to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s. NME named the Smiths the “most influential artist ever” in a 2002 poll. In 2003, four of the band’s albums appeared on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Based on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Marr, the group signed to the independent record label Rough Trade Records, on which they released four studio albums: The Smiths (1984), Meat Is Murder (1985), The Queen Is Dead (1986) and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987). They have also released several compilations, and numerous non-album singles. They had several singles reach the top twenty of the UK Singles Chart and all four of their studio albums reached the top five of the UK Albums Chart, including Meat Is Murder which hit number one. They won a significant following and remain cult favourites. The band broke up in 1987 due to internal tensions and have turned down several offers to reunite. The band’s focus on a guitar, bass, and drum sound, and their fusion of 1960s rock and post-punk, were a rejection of the then-popular, synthesiser-based dance-pop. Marr’s guitar work, using a Rickenbacker, had a jangle pop sound reminiscent of Roger McGuinn of the Byrds. Morrissey’s complex, literate lyrics combined themes about ordinary people with mordant humour.]
