Her Debut recording “Summerof” was one of our favorite recordings of 2010 and has received critical acclaim. She was the winner of the 2010 Pitch Music Award for Best Emerging Act.]

[Outside of the band, we were the first to hear the very new, debut EP release from Abigail Henderson and Christopher Lynn Meck with Matt Richey on Drums, & Cody Wyoming on guitar. In our opinion, Abigail Henderson’s voice remains one of the most honest and moving voices in KC music scene, Christopher Meck’s guitar sings too. the addition of Matt Richey who also plays drums for Dead Voices and The Grisly Hand, and Cody Wyoming help give this Tiny Horse galloping power.]

Their songs have been featured on MTV’s The Inbetweeners, and Daytrotter. The title “Little Leaves” is a nod to frontman Konnor Ervin’s landscaping day job. The lead single, “Ocean” was released as a free download in late 2012, prompting Popmatters to declare the ACBs as one of its “Best Hopes to Break Out in 2013.”]

Nathan Reusch is co-founder and manager of The Record Machine, an Independent KC based record label, founded in 2003. With Chris Haghirian, Nathan is the co-mastermind, of The Middle of The Map Festival, that includes over 130 Bands, in multiple venues, and Stages, in 3 Days, April 4-6. Nathan also DJs from time to time and is a passionate lover of music.

1.Youth Lagoon – “Mute”

[Based in Boise, Idaho, YL is Trevor Powers, who has been active as Youth Lagoon since 2010. His debut album The Year of Hibernation was released on Fat Possum Records on September 27, 2011. Powers’ music is a blend of Americana music and Experimental music with atmospheric and electronic elements. Powers’ sophomore album Wondrous Bughouse, was spawned from what he describes as “becoming more fascinated with the human psyche and where the spiritual meets the physical world.” During the time he wrote, Powers became intrigued with the metaphysical universe and blending those ideas with pop music]

2. Dan Deacon – “True Thrush”

[American composer and electronic musician based out of Baltimore, Maryland. Since 2003, Deacon has released eight albums under several different labels. Deacon is renowned for his live shows, where large-scale audience participation and interaction is often a major element of the performance.]

6. David Bowie – “The Next Day”
from: The Next Day / ISO Records – Columbia / March 12, 2013
[Bowie’s first new music in 10 years. In the works for over 2 years, Bowie is collaborated with longtime producer Tony Visconti who told the BBC that they worked on the new album at a very slow pace. “We never spent more than two to three weeks at a time recording,” Visconti said. “And then we’d take off as much as two months. We’d usually work on one or two songs in an afternoon and we’d whip them up to shape where they’d sound like great rock tracks. At that point there wouldn’t be any final vocals or lyrics. This is the same way I’d been working with him since The Man Who Sold the World. He hasn’t really changed in his approach.” Toward the end of Bowie’s 2004 tour in Europe the singer underwent emergency heart surgery for a blocked artery. There were rumors about Bowie’s health. Visconti told the BBC “He’s a very healthy man… I couldn’t explain how I know that, but I worked with a very healthy David Bowie in the studio and a very happy David Bowie in the studio.”]

10:22 – Interview with Valarie Vogel & Traci Williams

Anastasia WitbolsFeugen was killed on the night of October 22, 1997. Three years later, on June 11, 2001, Jackson County Sheriffs arrested Bryon Case and charged him with the murder of Anastasia. Byron Case was convicted by jury trial, on May 2, 2002 of Murder in the First Degree and of Armed Criminal Action. He received a sentence of Life in Prison Without Chance of Parole. He exhausted his last appeal in 2010, when the Supreme Court of the United States denied his petition to consider his habeas corpus appeal.

Valarie Vogel is originally from Pittsburgh, PA. She currently lives in LA, and works as a police dispatcher in Southern California. Valarie learned about Byron Case through a friend and began doing research in Byron Case’s Murder trial. Byron Case, is a Kansas City native who’s been in prison for 12 years. He was convicted of a murder that Byron and his family say did not commit. Through her research in the Byron Case trial Valerie became involved with the movement to Free Byron Case.

Traci Williams is Valarie’s friend. She was born and raised in Independence, and works at Larry’s Getaway, in Blue Springs, Missouri, as the Manager of Catering. Traci Williams heard about Byron Case through a West Memphis 3 support organization.

Valarie Vogel and Traci Williams, are part of a group that is planning a benefit for Byron Case, called: Break For Justice – Pool Tournament for Byron Case, at Larry’s Getaway, 1331 SW Highway, Blue Springs, Missouri.

Mark opened the conversation by discussing how, in his limited research of this case, he was stuck with how the characters of this tragedy: Anastasia, her boyfriend Justin Bruton, Justin’s friend Byron Case, and Byron’s young girlfriend Kelly Moffett, were all such lost kids, in their teenage years, struggling with their identities, drug use, and family issues. The mystery of how Anastasia was killed, and how her boyfriend Justin Brutin ended up dead from suicide, or how it took over three years to bring charges against Byron Case are confusing and difficult to sort through.

Valarie discussed how she became motivated to help in this case and how she came to the conclusion that Byron was innocent.

Much of the case rested on the testimony of Byron Case’s ex-girlfriend Kelly Moffett who had started dating the 18 year old Case when she was still in Middle School and 14 years of age. Kelly changed her story from what she reported to the investigating Sheriff immediately after the Anastasia was found dead. Kelly ended up testifying against Byron. She received immunity for her testimony.

Valarie, talked about how after she became aware of Byron Case, she contacted Byron’s mother, and also started corresponding with Byron Case and they have become friends. Valarie talked about what it mean to Byron to know people working to prove that he innocent.

Obviously, the family of Anastasia are not please with the efforts to support Byron Case. Mark asked about how they balance the mission for the truth without offending the loved ones of those victimized?

10:44 – Interview with Jamie Searle

Jamie Searle won critical acclaim as lead vocalist and songwriter for the band It’s Over who won a Pitch Music Award for Best Live Act. He left It’s Over to concentrate on his music education as a student of UMKC’s Conservatoiry of Music where he has immersed himself in mucical theory, compostion, harmonic structure, melody. Now out of school, Jamie is in the process of recording a full length release of material he has composed for a large ensemble of musicians. The result is: My Brothers & Sisters, a collective of at times up to 18 musicians, including a strings, horns, percussionists, bass, keyboards, vocalists, and back-up vocalists, and Jamie on vocals and guitar and conducting.

Jamie recently turned 30, but he looks so very much younger. Mark asked Jamie if people underestimate him because of his perceived age and youth.

We played music from Jamie’s new recordings, where he is collaborating with many musicians and vocalists. Jamie talked about the process.

My Brothers & Sisters, a collective of at times up to 18 musicians, including a strings, horns, percussionists, bass, keyboards, vocalists, and back-up vocalists, and Jamie on vocals and guitar and conducting.

Jamie has recently been playing for several Church services, leaning more about the song structure of gospel music.

Jamie discussed his recording collaboration with Andy Oxman in the studio, and mentioned that they hope to get the new music release sometime in April, but cannot commit to an exact date as of this moment.

8. Jeff Black – “True Love Never Let Me Down”
from: B-Sides and Confessions, Vol. 2 / Lotos Nile Music / January 15, 2013
[Originally from KC and now based in Nashville, Tennessee. In his twenties Black began performing at Blayney’s, where he also worked as a bouncer. Soon Black began touring and eventually relocated to Nashville, Tennessee where he met, among others, Iris DeMent (Black lends some backing vocals on DeMent’s 1992 debut album, Infamous Angel). His writings have been described as “impressionistic songs that are smart without forgetting the emotional undercurrent.” His songs have been covered by: Waylon Jennings, Sam Bush and BlackHawk. BlackHawk’s cover of Black’s song, “That’s Just About Right,” was a Top 10 Country single in 1994. Since then Black has released four of his own albums and tours widely. He also maintains his own free weekly podcast, Black Tuesdays.]

9. Jimi Hendrix – “Earth Blues”

[12 never before released Hendrix studio recordings, showcasing his work outside of the original Jimi Hendrix Experience trio. Beginning in 1968, Hendrix grew restless, eager to develop new material with old friends and new ensembles. Outside the view of a massive audience that had established the Experience as rock’s largest grossing concert act . Singer, songwriter, bassist, drummer, mistress of ceremonies, producer, organizer, trail blazer, Amy Farrand, has been a part of many influential KC bands including Sister mary Rotten Croth, EIO, Atlantic Fadeout. For three years she produced and hosted The Weirdo Wednesday Supper Club at Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club, but last November Amy announced on our show that she would be taking a hiatus from The Weirdo Wednesday Supper Club, and that possibly it could return as a quarterly show. The Weirdo Wednesday Supper Club – Spring Edition will be presented TONIGHT at Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club, from 7:30 to 10:30 featuring: Kristopher Bruders, Jay Cady, Cosmic Tady Brothers, Daisy Buckët, and Violet Vendetta.

Amy Farrand just returned from the SXSW Music festival in Austin, Texas, where she emceed the Midcoast Takeover stage, 4 days in a row.

Last November Amy announced on our show that she would be taking a hiatus from The Weirdo Wednesday Supper Club, and that possibly it could return as a quarterly show.

He left It’s Over to concentrate on his music education as a student of UMKC’s Conservatory of Music where he has immersed himself in musical theory, composition, harmonic structure, melody. Now out of school, Jamie is in the process of recording a full length release of material he has composed for a large ensemble of musicians. The result is: My Brothers and Sisters, a collective of at times up to 18 musicians, including a strings, horns, percussionists, bass, keyboards, vocalists, and back-up vocalists, and Jamie on vocals and guitar and conducting.

Bill Belzer has been playing music in Kansas City since the late 1980s. Early bands include: Mongol Beach Party and Grumpy. Bill toured with Uncle Tupelo and many others. Bill has played drums with many of Matt Pryor’s projects including, The New Amsterdams. Bill also performs as a solo singer songwriter and recently released a solo EP of his own songs. Bill currently records and performs with the bands: LAZY, The Sleazebeats, and Ghosty.
