Music from the 11th Annual Crossroads Music Festival
with Guest Co-Host Bill Sundahl + Connor Leimer Live!

We’ll feature music from 20 bands participating in the 11th annual Crossroads Music Fest, presented by Sprint, as a benefit for KKFI, on Saturday, September 12, from 6:00pm to 2:00am, featuring over 35 bands, in 7 venues, all within 2 blocks, in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District.

Mark will spin tracks from: The Free Years, The Phantastics, The Philistines, Katy Guillen & The Girls, Duncan Burnett & The Ministry, She’s A Keeper, Mountain Sprout, Light Music, Sara Morgan, Riala, Pink Royal, Lauren Anderson, Janet The Planet, Julian Davis, Westerners, Ruddy Swain, Connor Leimer, Slow Motion Commotion, Jessica Paige, and Instant Karma.

Bill Sundahl, founder of the Crossroads Music Festival and 90.1 FM KKFI’s Special Events Coordinator, joins us as co-host for the entire show! In our first hour, our friend Judy Mills, of Mills Record Company, returned to make her 7th appearance on Wednesday MidDay Medley, and again as “Guest Producer.”

Judy Mills has been a waitress, a student, a teacher, a poet, a corporate road warrior and a corporate retail slave, to name a few. She opened Mills Record Company, a new independent record store, at 314 Westport Rd, Kansas City, MO, about two and half years ago. A year later she expanded into the next door space to allow for used records and a new stage where bands play “in store” every week. Mills Record Company has hosted multiple bands for Record Store Day, and The Middle of The Map Fest.

2. Shamir – “Youth” (Vinyl)
from: Ratchet / XL / May 19, 2015
[Debut album from Shamir Bailey, born November 7, 1994, known by his stage name Shamir. An American singer and songwriter from Las Vegas, Nevada, his debut EP, Northtown, was released in June 2014 to positive reviews. In October 2014 Shamir signed to XL Recordings and released the single “On the Regular.” Shamir is known for his androgynous countertenor voice. Radio.com wrote that his singing voice, “like Joplin’s, stops you in your tracks.” Shamir has said that he does not mind having his voice described as androgynous, but notes that “countertenor” is the correct term: “It’s not feminine, it’s not masculine. It’s a happy medium … I feel like if the world was more like that, our problems would be gone.”]

3. Jim O’Rourke – “Friends with Benefits”
from: Simple Songs / Drag City / May 19, 2015
[6th solo studio album from Jim O’Rourke (born January 18, 1969) a musician and record producer, long associated with the Chicago experimental and improv scene. Around 2000, he relocated to New York before moving on to Tokyo, Japan, where he currently resides. He has released albums of jazz, noise, electronica and rock music. O’Rourke has collaborated with Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Derek Bailey, Mats Gustafsson, Mayo Thompson, Brigitte Fontaine, Loren Mazzacane Connors, Merzbow, Nurse with Wound, Phill Niblock, Fennesz, Organum, Phew, Henry Kaiser, Flying Saucer Attack, and in 2006 mixed Joanna Newsom’s album Ys. In 2009, he also mixed several tracks on Newsom’s follow up Have One On Me. He has produced albums by artists such as Sonic Youth, Wilco, Stereolab, Superchunk, Kahimi Karie, Quruli, John Fahey, Smog, Faust, Tony Conrad, The Red Krayola, Bobby Conn, Beth Orton, Joanna Newsom and U.S. Maple. He mixed Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album and produced their 2004 album, A Ghost Is Born, for which he won a Grammy Award for “Best Alternative Album”. During the recording of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, O’Rourke collaborated with Wilco member Jeff Tweedy and pre-Wilco Glenn Kotche under the name Loose Fur. Their self-titled debut was released in 2003 with a follow-up in 2006 entitled Born Again in the USA. He also mixed the unfinished recordings that made up a planned third album by the late American singer-songwriter Judee Sill, recorded in 1974 and mixed by O’Rourke for a 2005 release. His first three full-length albums for Drag City are named after three successive films by director Nicolas Roeg: Bad Timing: A Sensual Obsession, Eureka, and Insignificance. His fourth Drag City album, The Visitor, is named for an album that appears within Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth, recorded by the film’s protagonist Thomas Jerome Newton.]

4. Carlton Melton – “Perdidle”
from: Out To Sea / Agitated Records / June 29, 2015
[CARLTON MELTON formed along the Mendocino County coastline in Northern California on the weekend of July 17th, 2008, by members: Andy Duvall, Clint Golden, Brian McDougall, Rich Millman, John Steuernagel The idea to play live, loud, improvised, experimental, instrumental, psychedelic music in a geodesic dome had been discussed for many years prior to this date. The opportunity came to fruition after the dome was completely rebuilt and the acoustic sounds inside were fully realized. The music is recorded live inside the dome to analog and digital sources using omni-directional microphones. All music is improvised in the sense that no one really knows who or what is going to be played at any given time. There are no rehearsals, practices, demonstration tapes, second takes… what you hear is the first take… ” Hit It And Quit It ” as Funkadelic would prescribe. There are no studios. We record in Brian’s house and Brian happens to live in a geodesic dome.]

5. Chelsea Wolfe – “Color of Blood”
from: Abyss / Sargent House / August 7, 2013
[5th studio album from American singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe who grew up in Sacramento, California. Her father was in a country band and had a home studio, where by the age of 9, she had written and recorded songs which she later described as “basically Casio-based gothy R&B songs.]

6. Suuns & Jerusalem In My Heart – “Metal”
from: Suuns and Jerusalem In My Heart / Secretly Canadian / April 14, 2015
[A collaborative studio album by Canadian rock band Suuns: Ben Shemie on vocals guitar, Joe Yarmush on guitar & bass, Max Henry on keyboards & bass, Liam O’Neill on drums, with Jerusalem in My Heart, musical project led by Radwan Ghazi Moumneh on vocals, instruments, production, and mixing.]

7. Talk Talk – “I Believe in You”
from: Spirit of Eden / Parlophone (EMI) / September 16, 1988
[4th album by the English band Talk Talk. The album did not find either critical acclaim or commercial success on release, however it has over the years gained cult-status and is considered highly influential. A number of popular music industry publications have retrospectively named it one of the better albums of the 1980s. The songs were written, predominantly, by Mark Hollis lead singer, and Tim Friese-Greene (the group’s producer during its active years). The album was developed from a lengthy recording process at Wessex Studios, London between 1987 and 1988. Often working in darkness, the band recorded many hours of improvised performances, edited them down heavily, then re-arranged the remaining collection of soundbites into an album in, mostly, digital format. The end product included elements of rock, jazz, classical, and ambient music. Critics often view Spirit of Eden as a departure from Talk Talk’s previous albums.]

8. Eleventh Day Dream – “Vanishing Point”
from: Works For Tomorrow / Thrill Jockey Records / July 24, 2015
[13th album from Chicago based band founded by guitarists Rick Rizzo and Janet Beveridge Bean, who met at 1069, a house/practice space/hang out in Louisville. After moving to Chicago, Bean and Rizzo joined with guitarist Baird Figi and bassist Doug McCombs; Bean soon switched over to drums. Their first self-titled EP in 1987 introduced the hallmarks of EDD’s sound: Neil Young-inspired electric guitar workouts mixed with punk energy. The band’s full-length follow-up, Prairie School Freakout (1988), won critical praise and the attention of major labels.The band signed with Atlantic Records. Follow-ups Beet (1989) and Lived to Tell (1991) won more strong reviews but did not sell many copies; Figi left during the Lived to Tell tour and was replaced by Matthew “Wink” O’Bannon. The band made a stab for commercial success with 1993’s El Moodio, but the effort was unsuccessful and Eleventh Dream Day was dropped from Atlantic’s roster. O’Bannon left after recording 1994’s “Ursa Major” and the band ceased to be a full-time entity; Rizzo went back to college to earn a degree in education, while Bean and McCombs concentrated on their other musical projects, Freakwater and Tortoise respectively. Eleventh Dream Day has since recorded new albums every few years, starting with 1997’s Eighth. Recent albums have balanced the band’s Young-influenced approach with an interest in ambient sound, likely influenced by McCombs’s work with Tortoise.[citation needed] EDD released Stalled Parade in 2000, playing a handful of shows after the album’s release with Mark Greenberg of (The Coctails) assisting on keyboards and other instruments. 9. Irma Thomas – “Wish Someone Would Care”
from: Wish Someone Would Care / (Imperial) Capitol Records / 1964
[10th single release, and first full length album from Irma Thomas (born February 18, 1941, Ponchatoula, Louisiana, United States) is an American singer from New Orleans. She is known as the “Soul Queen of New Orleans”. Thomas is a contemporary of Aretha Franklin and Etta James, but never experienced their level of commercial success. In 2007, she won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album for After the Rain, her first Grammy in a career spanning over 50 years.]

10. Wanda Jackson – “My First Day Without You”
from: Sings Country Songs / Capitol Records / December 1966
[8th studio album from Wanda Lavonne Jackson (born October 20, 1937) singer, songwriter, pianist, guitarist who had success in the mid-1950s and 1960s as one of the first popular female rockabilly singers and a pioneering rock and roll artist. She is known to many as the “Queen of Rockabilly.” Wanda Jackson has released 45 studio albums, one international studio album, 7 tribute and cover albums, 4 live albums, 21 compilation albums, and two box sets. Born in Maud, Oklahoma, in 1937, but has lived much of her life in Oklahoma City. Her father, a musician, moved the family to Bakersfield, California, during the 1940s in hopes of a better life. Two years later, he bought Jackson a guitar and encouraged her to play. He also took her to see performances by Spade Cooley, Tex Williams and Bob Wills, which left a lasting impression. In 1948, when she was 11, the family moved back to Oklahoma.]

[Electronic rock / psychedelic-pop / euro-house. Last played on our show on April 15. Debut album recording of Milwaukee, Wisconsin based band, founded in June 2012, with: Brendan Benham, Shae Lappen, Dan Mena, Ed Zuehlke. The band members have played together in various forms for the past decade. Written over the course of two years, Ocean’s Daughter was recorded and mixed in 2014 by acclaimed producer and engineer Beau Sorenson (Death Cab for Cutie, Bob Mould). The album is a tonal and emotional exploration into the depths of love, worship, and forgiveness. The loosely conceptual album follows the oceanic heroine Aphrodite as she travels through a saga of love in modernity, exploring from different angles the strength, power, beauty and independence she embodies unequivocally through her manifestations of love. Light Music played The Middle of The Map Fest, Friday, April 24 at Ernie Biggs.]

3. The Mynabirds – “Shake Your Head Yes”

[3rd album from singer and multi-instrumentalist Laura Burhenn who named her band The Mynabirds partly as a nod to James Joyce, and partly a tribute to Neil Young’s Motown period (The Mynah Birds, with band mate Rick James). Nearly a year in the making. Laura Burhenn drove across the US twice and toured South Africa solo while writing, then spent 8 months in studios in LA, Nashville and Joshua Tree working out the songs. In addition to The Mynabirds, Burhenn has toured as a member of Bright Eyes and The Postal Service.]

4. Sunday Heroine –“Leech”

[Lawrence, KS based 3-piece band formed in the Spring of 2015 by: Chris Maddox on bass & backing vocals, Max Allsbrooks on drums, and the incredible 17 year old Max Lock, who is currently a Senior, at Topeka High School, in Topeka, Kansas. Thee Oh Sees play a wide range of rock genres, such as 1960s garage rock and psychedelic rock, punk rock, noise rock, art punk, and 1980s post-punk. The band became noted for their prolific discography, energetic live shows, and whimsical visual aesthetic. [6th studio album from Grammy nominated Iris DeMent who NPR said was considered ”one of the great voices in contemporary popular music.” The Trackless Woods sets 18 poems by acclaimed 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova to life. Hailed as one of Russia’s finest poets, Akhmatova survived the Bolshevik Revolution, both World Wars and Stalin. She lost family, friends and fellow writers to political killings and labor in the gulags. When Iris randomly stumbled upon Akhmatova’s work in a book of poetry a friend sent as a gift, she was immediately taken by the sorrow and burden of the poems, juxtaposed with Akhmatova’s lightness and transcendence in the face of inhumanity. ”Anna’s gift of song is so strong, about alI I had to do was get really quiet and listen,” says Iris. After reading that first poem the melodies began pouring out of her, and before she even fully understood what was driving her, Iris was gathering musicians and friends, including co-producer Richard Bennett (Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Steve Earle), to record ‘The Trackless Woods’ in her living room over a five-day period. The result is a breathtaking pairing of piano and voice in Iris’ style with timeless melodies that are deeply rooted in the American South. The project also fulfilled a long yearned-for desire to connect with her adopted daughter’s culture and history. Iris and her husband Greg Brown adopted their daughter from Siberia in 2005, when she was 6, and she says “I’d never have made this record were it not for her.”]

Their debut EP was recorded in Kansas City’s Element Recording by Joel Nanos. Wednesday MidDay Medley was the first radio show to play Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear. They have played live on our show in 2013 and 2014, and were featured in 90.1 FM’s Tribute to Pete Seeger at Unity Temple, and The Crossroads Music Fest. They played the Americana Music Fest in Nashville, in the fall of 2014, where the national music press fell in love with their music. They were signed to Glassnote Records and after spending several months recording their new album in Nashville, they made their network television debut, Feb. 11, 2015 on The Late Show With David Letterman. In the last year and a half, David George has toured with John Fogerty, playing The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show, The View; he met Paul McCartney. David also performed a solo acoustic set in front of nearly 9,000 people at Starlight Theatre opening for Styx, REO Speedwagon and Ted Nugent. In his career, David George has played in the bands Moaning Lisa and Culture Killers. After a move to the West Coast, in 2010 he released his solo album, Love/Life, a collection of 12 songs recorded in Burbank, California. A family emergency brought David back to KC, from LA where he continued his solo work and released an EP, several singles, and appeared in The Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s production of the new musical “Stillwater.”

Lauren Anderson is originally from Chicago. She first started performing solo gigs around Kansas City after completing her masters in music therapy, from The University of Kansas in 2012. Lauren then formed her own band and released her debut EP “Do & Hope” in August 2014. Lauren Anderson is the 2015 Female Vocalist of the Year from Midwest Music Awards. Lauren Anderson will play 90.1 FM’s Crossroads Music Festival, presented by Sprint, September 12. The Lauren Anderson Release Party for her debut full length record, “Truly Me” is at Knuckleheads Saloon, Thursday, August 27, at 8:30 pm.

Lauren was classically trained throughout most of her early life. She began classical piano lessons at the age of 8, was an active member of several choirs and began taking classical voice lessons when she began high school. She obtained a bachelors degree in music with an emphasis on voice at Augustana College. She planned on becoming an opera singer, but realized that pop & soul music were more in her wheelhouse.

Having listened to those around her, telling her that music and the arts were difficult fields to have a career in, Lauren followed the safe path in life, making sure she had a “back-up” plan while working on her music and performing.

Having had a passion for psychology in addition to music, Lauren decided to continue onto The University of Kansas to complete her masters in music therapy.

After receiving her masters in music therapy, in 2012, she began working on the pediatric unit and pediatric intensive care unit at The University of Kansas Hospital, as well as at Gillis Center as a music therapist. Despite her love of working as a music therapist, Lauren found that passions don’t die easily, she was ready to take on the challenge of making music performance her career. Lauren began performing solo gigs at Bar Louie, Jerry’s Bait Shop and Main Street Cafe.

She quickly realized that she could only go so far in the business while playing solo gigs, so she began attending jam sessions at venues such as Freddy T’s, Llewelyn’s Pub and Westport Saloon. At the these jams Lauren met Kristopher Schnebelen (of Trampled Under Foot, first place winners of the 2008 International Blues Challenge, and winners of the 2014 Blues Music Awards Album of the Year, and Blues Blast Band of The Year in 2011 and 2012.

Kristopher Schnebelen and Dylan Reiter (from Brandon Miller Band) and Adam Stuber, helped her complete her first first official EP, “Do & Hope”, released in August 2014. The EP was named after the unofficial motto of Lauren’s mother’s side of the family, who often remarked, “Just do it and hope it turns out okay.”

Satyagraha, is loosely translated as “insistence on truth” or “holding on to truth” (satya “truth”; agraha “insistence”), a particular philosophy and practice within the nonviolent resistance or civil resistance. The term satyagraha was coined and developed by Mahatma Gandhi. He deployed satyagraha in the Indian independence movement. Satyagraha theory influenced Nelson Mandela’s struggle in South Africa under apartheid, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s campaigns during the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, and many other social justice and similar movements.

We just played “Perception Deception.” For this song Sterling created a new music video in collaboration with Robin Rosenberger and Moondrop Circus. The video will be part of the Pledge Music Campaign.

Britt Adair with us one year ago, talking about Summer Kamp Camp Fest I. Last year, the entire event was held at 3740 Broadway Blvd, KCMO a bar formally known as Vandals. After Vandals was sold Britt needed to find a new home for Summer Kamp Fest.

Ryan Lee Toms & Jonathan Thatch, are members of KC based, HMPH! a two-piece math-rock band infusing drums, guitar, looping pedal and effects, to create a huge booming beautiful, complex sound of patterns and riffs and melody. Ryan Lee Toms is also known for his musical recordings as RLT, an experimental / Dance / Electronic Band consisting of Ryan Lee Toms and John Bersuch, recording on RUSTY RECORDS with: Loop heavy electronic psych-rock with intense rhythmic backgrounds. RLT relies heavily on spastic electronic loops and intense drum rhythm. At times it can sound swirly and fun and others dark and gritty, all while driving a complex under rhythm that can change frantically. RLT is a long ever changing project.

One of Ryan’s earlier videos for RLT was filmed by our earlier guest, Britt Adair.
