[Second full-length album by Californian experimental rock duo of Sam France, 22 year old vocalist and songwriter, originally from Olympia, Washington, and Jonathan Rado, also 22, who is a songwriter, guitarist, and keyboard player, originally form NYC. Formed in 2005, the band self-released several EPs between 2007 and 2011. In 2012 the group was signed to Jagjaguwar Records. This album was produced by Richard Swift and recorded at his National Freedom studio.]

2. Cowboy Indian Bear – “Does Anybody See You Out?”

[First Single release download from their upcoming 2nd full-length album: “Live Old, Die Young” that will be released on White Vinyl in April! The download also includes the songs: “Sheets,” “Live Old, Die Old,” and “Crime & Feel” on The Record Machine’s Tumblr page. Joshua Browning served the band as producer and engineer. The songs were recorded over a three year period, where the band was also constantly touring, living on the road, keeping the van running. 4. Sleepy Kitty – “Don’t You Start”

[St. Louis based band via Chicago. Paige Brubeck on vocals/guitar/keys, and Evan Sult (formerly of Harvey Danger) on drums/vocals/tapes. In the past few years the band has opended for Neon Trees, Dresden Dolls, Deerhoof, and Chuck Berry. While at home, Sleepy Kitty runs a screenprinting studio out of a 19th century warehouse where they specialize in handprinted show posters for bands & venues in St. Lu, Chicago & NYC.]

5. Radkey – “We’re Going Down”

[The Deli KC announced on their blog last week that The Deli’s Best Emerging Kansas City Artist of 2012 is Radkey! The three-piece band swept the competition, with a landslide of votes from local music jurors. Taking second place was Making Movies, followed closely by Schwervon! The complete ranking of the list of 48 very fine Kansas City area bands is posted at kansascity.thedelimagazine.com. Radkey is a band made up of three teenage brothers Darrion, Isaiah, and Solomon. Their influences include The Who and Nirvana.]

Sean Starowitz is a 2010 graduate of the Interdisciplinary Arts program at the Kansas City Art Institute. Sean is also the co-founder of Bread! KC, with classmate Andrew Erdrich that since 2010 has fed over 1000 attendees and raised over $12,000 in grants for art and community projects. Last year Sean and Andrew created The Speakeasy a six-week temporary cultural center at the La Esquina Gallery, for the Charlotte Street Foundation. Currently Bread! KC is collaborating with the UMKC Theatre Department, for “Eat This! KC Chews on the Politics of Food,” written and directed by Stephanie Roberts. Sean Starowitz joined to discuss the launch of Byproduct: The Laundromat, a project he organized and received a Rocket Grant through the Andy Warhol Foundation to produce, that begins at 7:00 PM this Sat, February 9th, at Walnut Place Laundromat in KCMO.

Sean Starowitz talked about challenging the notion of traditional art spaces.

During the first wash cycle, the series will begin with a screening of Kentucky-based filmmaker Ron Schildknect’s “My Porcelain Past,” a short documentary about that chronicles the last day of operation for a Louisville, Kentucky landmark, a White Castle Restaurant. You are from Louisville.

During the dry cycle, the programming will continue with KCAI professor and poet Jordan Stempleman, who will host a Common Sense Reading.

Sean Starowitz and Bread! KC are collaborating with Stephanie Roberts and “Eat This! KC Chews on the Politics of Food.” Stephanie and company members will with us on WMM in three weeks on February 27.

“Starowitz creates opportunities for alternative economies and exchanges, such as Wheels for Meals, BREAD! KC , and The Burnt Ends Residency.”

[KC based Psychedelic post-punk trio featuring ex-Ad Astra Per Aspera member Mike Tuley, his wife Brooke Tuley and Anna St. Louis. The album will be available as a vinyl LP in April. Recorded at Junior’s Motel, with additional recording at the Worst Place in the World, and House Tuley. Rcorded by Kirk Kaufman and Mike Tuley. Mixed by Mike Tuley.

[2 piece rock band. Nan plays drums & Matt plays guitar and they both sing. They lived in NYC for 15 years and recently relocated to KC. Last year they opened for both The Vaselines and Belle & Sebastian. They recorded Courage with Memphis-based engineer Doug Easley who’s worked with Pavement, Sonic Youth, Cat Power.]

Middle of The Map Festival Announcement…

Now in its 3rd year, Ink’s Middle of the Map Fest, curated by The Record Machine, returns to Kansas City this spring with an expanded lineup. Ink’s Middle of the Map Fest is the brainchild of Nathan Reusch of The Record Machine. This year’s Music Fest will take place April 4th through 6th at the Record Bar, Riot Room, The Uptown Theater, Union, Gusto Lounge, and Westport Coffeehouse.

Returning to the Fest for the second year, the Forum will feature speakers, technological and cultural panel dialogues, collaborative performances April 17th 18th and 19th at OfficePort in the Crossroads Arts District.

The Festival expands this year to include its first Film Fest taking place May 1 – 5 at the Alamo Drafthouse in downtown KC.

“Devotional Hymns From the Church of the Darwinian Snuff Film” was the 3rd full length release from KC based singer-songwriter, Folkicide, who has described his music as “despair-core” and writes that his vision of constructive pessimism, he hopes in time, will be recognized as a new acoustical genre, fully devoted to the documentation of the delightful futility of existence. Since 2010 Folkicide has released 4 full-length recordings and one EP, writing and arranging and recording over 60 tracks. Folkicide is also a visual artist. His works are currently on display at The Midwestern Musical Co. in the Crossroads. Folkicide plays Czar Sat. Feb. 9 with Ari Lehman the original Jason Voorhees. Folkicide translated is death of folk? Folkicide explained his transition from Punk and Rock and Roll to his solo work playing non-electric. The sounds of the acoustic guitar, the expression.

Folkicide would appear to be KC’s own Nihilist anti-hero, truly rejecting all religious and moral principles, in the belief that life is meaningless.

“Empire of The Ants” is one of Folkicide’s songs from a few years ago, that he is adding drums for a future Mikal Shapiro video involving the song.

The titles of Folkicide’s recordings reflect the darkness of his songs and lyrics: Let’s Worship Degenerates, Ultimate Decimation Blues, Devotional Hymns From the Church of the Darwinian Snuff Film, The Genocide is Mean.

Last year Folkicide released “The Genocide is Mean” EP in July 1, 2012. Most of the music was recorded on May 11, 2012, by Chubby Smith at his magical tractor shed in Perry, KS.

After four years of tinkering with the idea, Folkicide’s NATO was finally recorded during April through August 2012 by Jonathan Brokow (the Anti-Roy Thomas Baker) mostly in the Folkicide basement via 4 track cassette.

It was engineered and mastered mid-August by David Moore at Merriam Shoals Studio.

All songs were originally composed by the various Queen members and then strategically deconstructed by Folkicide Mercury without disrespect or irony intended because he truly loves Queen (well, pre-Hot Space Queen anyway) and NATO in particular.

Even though the songs were written by Queen, the lyrics, especially Bohemian Rhapsody seems perfect for Folkicide’s “pessimistic exploration into the decaying frame of Western Civilization.”

Folkicide discussed the challenges of covering an entire record.

Mike McCoy, Matt Kesler, Bernie Dugan, Mark Reynolds, and Lyle Wells on the October 17, 2012 edition of WMM.

Mike McCoy grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas. In the early 1990s his band Cher U.K. filled venues in Kansas City with their their music playing with popular themes in punk rock music. Mike McCoy, now lives in Austin Texas and fronts his band the Service Industry. Mike is the founder of The North vs. South Music Festival. This Saturday night, October 20, Cher UK play Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club on Sat, Oct. 20 w/ The Pedajets and Hot Dog Skeletons.

Mike McCoy, Mark Reynolds, talked about the early days of Cher UK and the local music scene.

The band was originally called Cher. Many of their first recordings were released on cassette, the band went through several line-up changes and the band’s name changed to Cher UK.

Mike McCoy talked about his love of metaphor in music and the inspirations Cher UK’s new songs for their new EP.

Mike McCoy talked about the contributions of Mike Stover on guitar for the new recordings and the musicianship of Kyle Dahlquist who contributed on horns.

In 2004 Mike McCoy founded the North vs. South Music Festival, as you call is a bi-annual, bi-polar music festival designed to showcase independent rock along the I-35 corridor. This festival has grown each year.

Matt Kessler discussed the new recordings of The Pedaljets and how the band will release a single in December and their new full length record on vinyl in 2013.

Sneaky Creeps were originally formed by Artists: Max Crutcher, Andy Erdrich and Andy Davis, who met while attending to KCAI. Andy Davis moved away, making the Sneaky Creeps a duo of Max Crutcher on Drums and Yell/Talk, and Andrew Erdrich on Guitar and Yell/Talk. Sneaky Creeps were last with us as Guest Produers / Co-Hosts, on WMM on June 13 when Max joined us live in the studio, and Andrew joined us by phone from Indianapolis, where he was working on an installation.

For today’s show Andrew Erdrich joined us live in the studio. Andrew is a graduate of The Kansas City Art Institute, who with Sean Starowitz, founded: BREAD! KC, an art project that celebrated their 2nd year of creating funding for local artists by hosting a dinner, where for a $10 donation, diners are served a bowl of fresh soup, fresh baked bread, and a ballot. Three different creative projects are presented, and diners vote for one to receive the money collected from the evening. In under a year, BREAD! KC has awarded over many thousands in micro-grants to area writers, gardeners, bands and artists. Andrew Erdrich has also been part of the Urban Culture Project and works at Vahalla Press.

[Born in the village of Toshka, in southern Egypt, he was originally trained to be an electrical engineer. [Chicago band consisting, for most of their career, of David Grubbs and Jim O’Rourke. Between 1993 and 1998 they put out seven albums. Grubbs, a former member of Squirrel Bait and Bastro, formed the band in Chicago in 1991. They released their first album, The Serpentine Similar, in 1993. This early lineup saw Grubbs joined by Bundy K. Brown and John McEntire, both members of Bastro’s final incarnation, on bass guitar and drums respectively. In 1994 Brown and McEntire left to join Tortoise and guitarist, composer and producer Jim O’Rourke joined.]

[Born February 28, 1939 – Died February 22, 2001. American fingerstyle guitarist and composer who played the steel-string acoustic guitar as a solo instrument. His style has been greatly influential and has been described as the foundation of American Primitivism, a term borrowed from painting and referring mainly to the self-taught nature of the music and its minimalist style. Fahey borrowed from the folk and blues traditions in American roots music, having compiled many forgotten early recordings in these genres. He would later incorporate classical, Portuguese, Brazilian, and Indian music into his sound. Fahey spent many of his later years in poverty and poor health, but enjoyed a minor career resurgence with a turn towards the more explicitly avant-garde, and created a series of abstract paintings during the last years of his life. He died in 2001 due to complications from heart surgery. In 2003, he was ranked 35th in the Rolling Stone “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list.]

1. Field Music – “Start The Day Right”
From: Plumb / Memphis Industries / Feb. 13, 2012
[4th full-length studio album from Sunderland, England band, recorded in their newly-built studio. The band’s core consists of brothers David & Peter Brewis, who played drums for fellow Sunderland band The Futureheads. Plumb was released on plum-colored vinyl. David Brewis told DIY magazine, “I love the fact that the English language has so many homophones. I think it’s one of those unique things about the language which really informs the English sense of humor. It tickles me that we can colour all of the album text and the vinyl plum.” The album’s cover art is a collage assembled by Peter Brewis and based on the painting “Standard Station” by American pop artist Ed Ruscha, a print of which hung in Peter’s bathroom.]

[6-piece band from Lawrence, Kansas, includes: lead singer Jesse Braswell Roberts, with Jim Barnes, Garrett Childers, Isaac Flynn, Matt Green, and Zach Mehla. The band mixes folk and pop elements with four-part harmonies, and electric guitars mixed with acoustic instruments. Quiet Corral is in concert tonight, Feb 29th @ Chaser’s in Scottsdale, AZ. Beautiful Bodies have been compared to Blondie, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the Runaways. Fronted by the playful and charismatic Alicia Solombrino on Lead Vocals; with Thomas Becker on Guitar & Back-up Vocals; Luis Arana on Bass; Aaron Crawford on Drums, Beautiful Bodies have been playing live since 2005 and have shared the stage with Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Chemical Romance, Cake.

Beautiful Bodies play Beaumont Club, March 12, at 7:00 PM in an all ages show, with Company of Thieves.

The band takes its name from one of Solombrino’s favorite books, the Beautiful Bodies by Laura Cunningham.

Alicia Solombrino was born and raised here in Kansas City and she explained the moment when she knew that she wanted to be a musician. It was when she was in kindergarten. “I saw Madonna on the (1990) MTV (Video Music) Awards performing Vogue,” she said.

Along with being Lead singer, Alicia is also known as a videographer, director, photographer, promotions manager, and web designer, she has been able to put her talents to use in many different ways and with many different venues. Alicia has created videos with many bands including The Republic Tigers and Alacartoona.

Guitarist Thomas Becker, is a Harvard Law graduate. (in Miami, representing victims of a Bolivian massacre in a civil lawsuit against the country’s former president.)

Beautiful Bodies have been playing and touring since 2005, sharing the stage with bands such as Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Chemical Romance, Cake. Har Mar Superstar, Shny Toy Guns, and others.

Beautiful Bodies released the single “You’re A Risk” Oct. 12, 2010?

Over the past few years the band has been writing new songs and now have the opportunity to record these songs with multi-platinum selling producer John Feldmann who has worked with The Used, Panic at the Disco, Good Charlotte, Neon Trees and Hilary Duff. How did you all meet up with John Feldman?

The band will be traveling to Los Angeles and recording for about a month. And have started a Kickstarter grant to help complete the recording of their new record. This past Saturday, February 25, Beautiful Bodies were in concert for their Album Kickstarter Party at the Riot Room, with Mute the Idol, Bears & Company, Last Nights Vice.
