They began playing Madisen’s original songs along with the occassional cover of a classic track, reinterpreted in their own incredibly beautiful performace of two voices and two guitars in harmony and orchestration. He was the recipient of the 1999 Drama Desk award for best supporting actor for his performance as Candy in Of Mice And Men at The Coterie Theatre. He founded The Actor’s-Craft Studio in 1987 where he has been teaching multiple acting classes for over 30 years. Richard Alan Nichols, studied as a scholarship student for five years with Uta Hagen at the HB Studio in New York. He has just released a new book, To Act Is To Do, (39 West Press) a guide for both actors and teachers. Richard Alan Nichols will read selections from his new book, To Act Is To Do, at a special Book Release & Reception, Sunday, March 18, at 4:00 pm, at Just Off Broadway Theatre, 3051 Penn Valley Dr., KCMO.

Richard Alan Nichols, thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

I first Richard Alan Nichols in June of 1986, at the old Unicorn Theatre space at the building that was the Norman School just east of the SW Trafficway. He were directing a short one piece, from a collection of short pieces in the workshop production of playwright Frank Higgins’ “Heartland.” Richard Alan Nichols was wearing a sports watch around his neck, and was directing Laurie Larson in a piece that took place in a shopping mall. It was my favorite piece in the show.

Richard Alan Nichols was born on a farm in Kensington, Connecticut. At 11 years old his father died, and with his mother he moved away from the farm and into the town of Meriden, Connecticut. His Aunt Gertrude helped introduce him to the theatre. When he was 16 he saw Uta Hagen in the play “St. Joan,” by George Bernard Shaw, in a theatre in New Haven.

1953, when he was 18 years old, he found himself studying theatre at Boston University. He writes in his book about how the 1950s were all about emotion, “method” acting. At Boston University he met Olympia Dukakis. At Boston University he also met his wife Joanna.

In 1957 he and Joanna moved to New York City. In April 1958 his son Peter was born. In 1959 he was accepted into the HB Studios to study with Uta Hagen. The HB Studio was run by Uta Hagen and Herbert Berghof. In 1962 Uta Hagen won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Martha in Edward Albee’s play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”

In 1967 Richard Alan Nichols moved to St. Louis and worked with his wife Joanna teaching Viola Spolin’s Theatre Games and also creating their own performing theatre troupe that even included their 14 year old son.

In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association voted to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. This came as a relief to Alan, who decided to be open about his sexuality and “come out.” Alan had been hiding his sexual orientation all of his life, living in the closet, he now wanted to be honest about his life.

In 1978 Richard Alan Nichols found himself divorced, and tired of working in improvisation. A friend encouraged him to audition for The Missouri Repertory Theatre, now the KC Rep. This is what brought him to Kansas City. In 1980 he met visual artist and set and costume designer Atif Rome who became his life partner.

In 1985 he started Actors-Craft Studio, at first in the Westport Allen Center, then in a space on West 39th street that was being rented by The Unicorn Theatre that is now a parking lot for Missy B’s. Actor’s Craft then moved into a three story house on Warwick, where he not only held multiple classes but also produced several shows including Connections and Incidents, written by Eric Adler, The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me by David Drake, and two original plays he wrote called Land, and Detours with all characters played by students. In 2001 Actors Craft reopened in South Hyde Park. More info at: http://www.actorscraftstudio.com

Richard Alan Nichols is a professional actor, director, and teacher. Some acting credits include: The View From The Bridge, Qed, The Giver, Tuesdays With Morrie, Proof, Rainmaker, Small Craft Warnings, Slight Defect, A Desert Holiday, Light:Damage, Over The River And Through The Woods, Prelude To A Kiss, Desert Holiday, An American Daughter, Keely and Du, The Sum Of Us, A Walk In The Woods, Frankie & Johnny In The Clair De Lune, The Normal Heart, Breaking The Code, A Christmas Carol. Directing credits include: Spring Awakening, The Glass Menagerie, All My Sons, Ti Jean Blues, Excerpts, Al Dente, Kissing Marianne, Three X Romulus Linney, There Are More Things…, Eight Easy Pieces, Rocks Can Float, The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me, Potluck, Land, On The Verge, Reckless, Connections, and Incidents. Richard Alan Nichols understudied at The New Theatre for Joel Rooks in Say Goodnight Gracie; Jack Kllugman in Aspirin & Elephants; Gary Burghoff in Marvin and Mel; and Paul Michael in Over the River and Through the Woods.

To Act Is To Do by Richard Alan Nichols, who studied as a scholarship student for five years with Uta Hagen at the HB Studio in New York, is the ultimate guide for both actors and teachers. In six informative and interactive class sessions, Nichols details twenty exercises designed to solve most acting problems that arise while working on plays. Also included are eighteen evaluations of work (scenes, monologues, and Hagen exercises) presented by Nichols’ students, with each evaluation serving as a model for teachers to follow in order to assist actors in learning how to assess their own work in an honest way. This unique exploration—the personal journey of one actor’s lifelong quest to perfect his craft while in pursuit of becoming a player—will help all actors develop the discipline necessary to fine-tune their acting instruments and discover new behaviors in themselves.

Richard Alan Nichols will read selections from his new book, To Act Is To Do, at a special Book Release & Reception, Sunday, March 18, at 4:00 pm, at Just Off Broadway Theatre, 3051 Penn Valley Dr., KCMO. http://www.justoffbroadway.org, http://www.actorscraftstudio.com, http://www.39westpress.com

The songs that found their way to me knew they belonged and deserved to be included in this collection of unapologetically gay gems. 10:30 – Interview with Rev. Paul Smith

Paul Smith began serving several Southern Baptist churches in St. Louis while in high school and college, he completed his BA in psychology at Washington University in 1959 and after receiving a Masters degree in theology and biblical studies from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, he came to Broadway Baptist Church in midtown Kansas City in 1963 where he after 48 years he continues to pastor and teach. Paul Smith was given the GLAAD Leadership Award in 1995. In addition to hundreds of CDs, brochures, booklets, and published articles outlining his theological beliefs and practices, he contributed two chapters to the book Enabling the Dialogue About Homosexuality, and he has written several books, including: “Is It Okay To Call God Mother? Considering the feminine face of God” from Hendrickson Publishing and his newest book: “Integral Christianity: The Spirit’s Call to Evolve,” released March 3, 2011 from Paragon House Publishing. Paul Smith joins us to talk about his own evolution while serving for 48 years as Pastor at Broadway Church, and we’ll also talk about: Jesus, the Bible, the Pope and Hell.

In his soon to be half a century as pastor at Broadway, the church experienced significant and on-going change, becoming nationally recognized as a pioneer in small groups, contemporary worship, team leadership, justice issues, progressive theology, church renewal, and spiritual formation. It continues to evolve today.

In 1872 eighteen Swedes joined hands in prayer as they covenanted together to begin the First Swedish Baptist Church of Kansas City. They wanted to provide a welcoming place for others in Kansas City who did not always feel at home in other churches because of their different customs and language.

Paul’s new book “Integral Christianity: The Spirit’s Call to Evolve,” released March 3, 2011 from Paragon House Publishing is now available through your local bookstore and amazon.

Broadway Church is located at 3931 Washington in Kansas City, for more information you can call: 816.561.3274 or visit broadwaychurch-kc.org or revpaulsmith.com
