The eleven songs on the record are drawn from the World War II anti-Fascist Italian partisans, the U.S. civil rights movement, and Mexican protest ballads, as well as original compositions, and feature a wide range of guest vocalists, including Tom Waits, Steve Earle, Meshell Ndegeocello, Justin Vivian Bond, Fay Victor, Sam Amidon, and Ohene Cornelius. Ribot began working on the project at the end of 2016, responding not just to the American elections, but to the political trends he was seeing around the world. “I am alarmed by Trump and the movement he’s part of,” he says. “I’ve spent a good chunk of my life running around the world on tour—I’m kind of an accidental internationalist—and I see that he’s not an isolated phenomenon. And if we don’t deal with what is going on, it is going to deal with us.” Ribot was born in Newark,NJ in 1954. As a teen, he played guitar in garage bands while studying with his mentor, Haitian classical guitarist and composer Frantz Casseus. He moved to New York City in 1978. He was a member of the soul/punk Realtones, and John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards. Ribot also worked with Brother Jack McDuff, Wilson Pickett, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Chuck Berry, and many others. Fay Victor was born July 26, 1965. She is an American musician, composer, lyricist and educator. Originally a singer in the traditional jazz field, she has been working in jazz, blues, opera, free improvising, avant-garde, modern classical music, and occasional acting since re-settling in New York in 2003. 3. Dirty Projectors – “Break-Thru”

[8th studio album from Brooklyn based band, formed in 2002. The band currently consists of primary recording artist and core member David Longstreth (vocals, guitar), alongside longtime bass guitarist Nat Baldwin, Mike Daniel Johnson (drums), Maia Friedman (guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Felicia Douglass (percussion, keyboards, backing vocals) and Kristin Slipp (keyboards, backing vocals). Since its formation the band has released eight full-length studio albums, and has had numerous lineup changes, with major contributions from guitarist and vocalist Amber Coffman from 2006 to 2013. “If 2017’s Dirty Projectors was the band’s dark night of the soul, Lamp Lit Prose marks a vibrant rebirth. Bright, colorful, and bursting with hope, the music here splits the difference between pop instinct and avant-garde ambition, live-band rigor and super-synthetic production—think Talking Heads for the 2000s. And where lead Projector Dave Longstreth’s songs have, in the past, tended toward high concepts, here he dwells on the rush of simple things: optimism (“Right Now”), romance (“Break-Thru”), and pure, unfiltered excitement (“I Feel Energy”). [4th full-length album from Indie rock band duo from Madison, Wisconsin consisting of: Eve Wilczewski and Meg Golz who met while working in an Italian restaurant in Freeport, Illinois. They realized they had similar taste in music, and began playing together, at first as “BoboMosie,” a CocoRosie cover band and eventually composing originals as Seasaw. Seasaw’s album “Too Much Of A Good Thing” was selected as one of the top five underground albums of the month by The Nerdist in July 2016. The same month, they were named Top Emerging Artist at Wisconsin Summerfest. Their song “Into the White” was one of Daytrotter’s Best Songs of 2016.Seasaw has performed with Lucius, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, SOAK, Lissie, Mason Jennings, Har Mar Superstar and Shakey Graves.Golz holds a degree in audio engineering from the Madison Media Institute and Wilczewski was a painting major at University of Illinois.]

5. Other Americans – “Curtis Mayfield”

[Debut self-titled EP from Julie Berndsen on lead vocals, Adam Phillips on drums, Brandon Phillips on guitar, Zachary Phillips on bass. Hailing from the musical hotbeds of KCMO, and Lawrence, KS, and comprised of members of The Architects, Latenight Callers, Radar State and Brandon Phillips and The Condition, Other Americans is a virtual Midwestern supergroup of sorts. The cohorts first crossed paths in when a mutual friend and matchmaker introduced Brandon Phillips to vocalist Julie Berndsen “We were all looking for something new to do musically, recalls Brandon. “The way I remember it, a mutual friend (KC music producer Joel Nanos) told me that Julie was looking to start something new and I sent her a note about it. We had tacos to see if we liked each other.” The duo enlisted drummer Adam Phillips, bassist Zachary Phillips and late keyboardist Ehren Starks, who passed away suddenly in March 2018, and began writing the material that would become the EP. The band premiered their video for lead single, “Murdering Crows,” directed by artist Adrian Halperin, via The Spill Magazine in May 2018 Superlatively catchy and conjuring up well-intentioned comparisons to Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fiery Furnaces, and even a jauntier and more aggressive Passion Pit, the new EP captures the excitement and spontaneity that punctuates coastal indie rock while embracing elements of the electronic dance rock that populates midnight warehouse parties. “All the basic tracking [for the EP] was done at Element Recording and was mastered by Joel Nanos,” Brandon Phillips reported. “Then I took it to my spot and worked and reworked it all for a year until it sounded like something none of us had heard before.”. The band’s video for their song, “Make Me Afraid,” was directed by Todd Norris & Mitch Brian./. Illuminated with the knowledge that the journey is as important as the destination, Phillips admits to looking forward to the period of dues paying that their debut brings. “I’m looking forward to all the firsts;. first show. first record. first tour. Magical thinking could have me pining for a post-Grammys Maserati coke party by the sea, but if I’m all wrapped up in making that fantasy come true, I’ll miss the fun of being present for the firsts and the fifths and the tenths.” From there the plan becomes a bit more complicated, “ The ‘Plan” as I see it is to con some major label artist into taking us out as support, steal their identities on laundry day, have reconstructive surgery, then only tour in countries without U.S. extradition treaties,” Brandon jokes. ]

6. Danny McGaw – “You an Me”

[Manchester, England born Danny McGaw was a footballer, then a street musician, then a bar music, and then a husband and father living in Lawrence, Kansas, where he released one of our favorite recordings of 2012 – “Eccles Road.” After that he formed the band, Welles The Traveler with Jason Jones, Dan Hines, Chad Brothers, and Mike West, who produced the group’s debut recording. Eventually Danny and family relocated to California. He has made 10 records in 14 years and records his songs in his home studio. Danny is back in KC this week for multiple gigs and to be part of the 87th Annual Plaza Art Fair, Sept. 21-23.]

New York artist & musician Ted Riederer joins us to talk about Never Records a collaborative project exploring the potential of a record store and record label to unite, educate, and uplift a community through recorded sound. Never Records began in January 2010, in an abandoned Tower Records near Union Square in New York City. Soon the project expanded to become a mobile record-making lab with Riederer traveling from city to city, opening a vinyl record shop with recording equipment and a vinyl record lathe to cut two, four-minute records on the spot for people who visit the store. Never Records has traveled to: Liverpool, Derry, Ireland, London, Lisbon, New Orleans, Victoria Texas, Amman Jordan, and now Kansas City. A “one-time refugee from punk and sometime band member,” Ted Riederer has armed himself with painting supplies, electric guitars, amplifiers, old LPs, record players, drum kits, hard disk recorders, photography equipment, a vinyl record lathe, and long-stemmed roses as he’s ambled artistically from the Americas to the Antipodes. His work has been shown nationally and internationally including exhibitions at PS1, Prospect 1.5, Goff and Rosenthal Berlin, Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, Jack Hanley Gallery (San Francisco), Marianne Boesky Gallery, Context Gallery (Derry, Ireland), David Winton Bell Gallery (Brown University), The University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum, the Liverpool Biennial, and the Dhaka Arts Center, Bangladesh. His “Never Records” project has traveled from New York, to Liverpool, to Derry, to New Orleans, to Texas, and to London, which was sponsored by the Tate Modern.

Ted Riederer is the Founding Artistic Director of Howl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project, non-profit gallery/performance space in the East Village. The New York Times has described Howl! Happening as, “Instrumental to the history of the area.” Howl! Happening’s thriving publishing imprint A/P/E has included essays by: Ai Wei Wei, Dan Cameron, Anthony Haden-Guest, Robert Nickas, Michelle Grabner, Michael Musto, C. Carr, Nicole Rudick, John Lyons, and James Wolcott.

New York artist and musician Ted Riederer launched Never Records in 2010 as part of a collaborative project with curators No Longer Empty in the former sales floor of Tower Records’ fabled East Village flagship store. One year later, Never Records had expanded to become a mobile record-making lab, using recording equipment and a vinyl record lathe to cut two, four-minute records on the spot for whoever walks in the door (one copy stays behind in the fast-growing library).
Never Records opened August 25, 2018 as part of Open Spaces Kansas City, and runs through October 28th, 2018, in a storefront space in the Crossroads district of Kansas City. The space is located at 1611 Oak St., Kansas City, MO 64108.

The exhibition will be open from Wednesday – Sunday from 10am-6pm. There will be a series of workshops and special events. A calendar of events will be posted on the Never Records website http://www.neverrecords.net.

Never Records is a combination recording studio and record shop, all operating in one building. The sole proprietor, interior decorator, and engineer is New York-based artist Ted Riederer. Inspired by his own redemptive education at a young age inside the walls of a local record store in Rockville, Maryland as well as the field recording projects of Alan Lomax, Riederer devised his unique community art installation in the early part of this century and has been replicating it with regional variations throughout the world since 2010.

Performers from a locale sign up for recording sessions ahead of time, with no auditions necessary. Riederer usually offers three hour sessions, during which he mixes on the fly and cuts vinyl right in front of the artist’s eyes once both are satisfied with a particular take. The recordings are free to the artist, the sessions are open to the public, and you can’t buy anything you see. Ted hasn’t lowered prices by cutting out the middleman. He is the middleman. He is not a vertical operation; he is an elliptical one, a constant feedback loop supplying its own demand. Still, everyone takes something home, even if it’s the barest speck of record shop camaraderie inadvertently inhaled.

Within the walls of the Never Records shop, visitors can view a gallery of photographs and artwork from previous temporary establishments in the US and UK, as well as flip through stacks of vinyl representing the hundreds of solo folk artists, punk bands, storytellers, jazz groups, and noisicians who jumped at the chance for a free recording session. Black wooden bins hold a curated selection of records from the growing collection, but these aren’t for sale or even trade.

The artist or band is allowed to take their own copy home, and another is added to Riederer’s archives, as well as a digital copy. Riederer encourages bands to use the recording any way they want. There are no fees, royalties, or ownership issues.

“I walk them through the cutting process and show them their sound waves on a microscope. I consider this interaction the real performance of Never Records. The alchemy of cutting never fails to put a smile on participants’ faces. The machine is a new one made by these crazy but wonderful dudes in southern Germany. It is called a Vinyl Recorder and while it may not be able to compete with a $50,000 Neumann cabinet lathe, I can get pure, beautiful, hiss free recordings.”

Beyond the technical aspect of recording, his main job is to maintain the right conditions inside the shop for insecurity-free performances. The right conditions go beyond the gear and the Persian rugs covering the floors. The right conditions exist separately from the poster-covered walls or the fact that the distribution chain from studio to factory to anti-commercial outlet runs about twelve feet. The right conditions include Riederer’s ability to quickly ascertain a band’s influences and capabilities and the vast cross-genre knowledge that allows him to alter his recording methods for each artist. The right conditions have everything to do with musicians in eyesight of each other, no one isolated in a booth. Everyone experimenting without worry because the meter isn’t running on dead air, eating up the credit limit.

Never Records has a slogan. It is YOU ARE NOT LISTENING. Riederer explains, “A lot of people say that certain movements just need a voice. But it doesn’t matter if you have a voice if no one is fucking listening! You can have the most articulate voice, but if no one’s listening, it’s like the voice doesn’t matter. You gotta listen. Someone has to listen, and this process I take very seriously.”

In a world where bands are judged on 30 second samples and MP3s are collected and traded like baseball cards with no thought to the hard work and personalities behind their creation, Never Records creates a physical reminder of what a virtual platform can never truly duplicate.

It was there where I communed with the spirit of Punk, Ska, Mod, and Rock and Roll. It was there where I learned about politics, sex, existentialism, style, and fashion. Yesterday and Today was more like a social library, a meeting place for musicians and artists, than a retail space. Never Records is my love letter to the record store. In the ruins of the one of the great retail giants of the end of the last century, a casualty of modernity and the Great Recession, we will reclaim the spirit of music and commune amongst the wreckage.

11. Lovergurl – “Rebel”

KC based 4-piece band, Lovergurl caught our ear with their synth pop sound and lyrics reflecting social and political messages with hip hop and punk elements. The trio released their EP, The President is a Sex Offender on May 19, 2017. Keyboardist and vocalist, Stephanie Bankston was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. She is a graduate of The University of Missouri. She moved abroad in her 20s, and lived in Seoul, Korea, where she played in a mostly female band called BaekMa (“White Horse”). Stephanie returned to Kansas City in the Fall 2015. Brook Worlledge, is 26 years old and is a Kansas City native. She is the band’s drummer and she sings and writes songs for the band. Brook is a defender of the proletariat. Brook’s influences range from The B-52s, The Velvet Underground, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Lovergurl guitarist and vocalist, Heather Andrews is also 26. She was born and raised in Rhode Island, and moved to Kansas City in 2011 and fell in love with the city.]

12. Anna Calvi – “Don’t Beat the Girl Out of My Boy”

[3rd album from London singer. Produced by Nick Launay (Nick Cave) at Konk Studios in London with some further production in LA, the album was recorded with Anna’s band – Mally Harpaz on various instruments and Alex Thomas on drums – with the addition of Adrian Utley from Portishead on keys and Martyn Casey from The Bad Seeds on bass. It has a new rawness, a primal energy into which Calvi pushes the limits of her guitar and voice beyond anything she’s recorded before. Hunter is the embodiment of the feeling of truly letting go. For the songwriter and virtuosic guitarist, it was a catharsis, an opportunity to be more truthful than ever. The first new music since 2014’s collaborative release with David Byrne, Strange Weather EP, her self-titled debut album and the 2013 follow-up One Breath, Hunter is a visceral album exploring sexuality and breaking the laws of gender conformity. A queer and a feminist record, it is galvanizing in its hunt for freedom. It was important to Calvi that it was as vulnerable as it is strong; as beautiful as it is harsh; as much about the hunted as it is about the hunter. But she’s careful not to characterize any of these traits as “masculine” or “feminine” – the whole point is that one person, of any gender, can be both. The power is in the contrast itself; in the way she oscillates between extremes, sounding freer than ever before. She wanted to express herself while being “free from the story that either gender is given, free from worrying how people would judge me on what I want to do with my body & myself. [Ivory Blue started writing music at the age of 14. An Indiana native, Ivory was given up for adoption at the age of 4, into a family that later caused them to run away at the age of 15. IVORY played coffee houses and small venues before landing in Kansas City in 2010. Ivory was one of the first artists to come-out as Non Binary Transgender, and gained respect from radio, television, and international magazines. In 2017 Ivory was among 1800 bands that competed in neXt2Rock. Ivory won local and regional challenges and advanced to the nationals in Los Angeles, where the top five bands played The Viper Room before judges that included: Scott Borchetta President & CEO of Big Machine Label Records; fashion designer John Varvatos; songwriter & producer Desmond Child; engineer Chris Lord-Alge; Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols; and Gavin Rossdale of Bush. Ivory won the entire competition and the opportunity to record “Ready Get Set” for Big Machine Records / John Varvatos Records. The single was released this summer on June 15, 2018.]

[Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear have garnered international acclaim, and new fans from all over the world. They signed with Glassnote Records and recorded their debut full length album in Nashville with acclaimed producer Jim Abiss. They performed their debut single “Silent Movies” on The Late Show with David Letterman, they’ve toured across the United States, and Europe, more than once. They were featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NBC’s The Today Show, and “Later With Jools Holland and played Bonnaroo, Pilgramage, and the Newport Folk Festival, and the Ryman Theatre, in Nashville. Ruth Ward has continually performed throughout her life, mostly in coffee shops and open mics, for over 30 years, even recording a solo record. In the midst of this she got married and became a mom, and was busy raising a family. Madisen Ward was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother, where Madisen grew up watching his mom perform at local coffee shops. Eventually he began to learn to play the guitar, and poured his talent for writing into the music to create original songs. They began playing Madisen’s original songs along with the occasional cover of a classic track, reinterpreted in their own incredibly beautiful performance of two voices and two guitars in harmony and orchestration. 19. Iron & Wine – “What Hurts Worse”

[This EP collects extra Iron & Wine tracks written for 2017’s Beast Epic release. Samuel “Sam” Ervin Beam was born July 26, 1974. He is better known by his stage and recording name Iron & Wine, is an American singer-songwriter. He has released six studio albums, several EPs and singles, as well as a few download-only releases, which include a live album (a recording of his 2005 Bonnaroo performance). He occasionally tours with a full band. Beam was raised in South Carolina before moving to Virginia and then Florida to attend school. He now resides in Durham, North Carolina.[ The name Iron & Wine is taken from a dietary supplement named “Beef, Iron & Wine” that he found in a general store while shooting a film.]

20. Shiner – “Sleep It Off”

[The group formed in 1992, and quickly found wide exposure, releasing a vinyl EP in 1993 and touring with acts such as Sunny Day Real Estate, Chore, Jawbox, Season to Risk, The Jesus Lizard, and Girls Against Boys. The group released their first LP, Splay (recorded at Steve Albini’s Chicago studio) in 1996, and a second album, Lula Divinia the next year. Sub Pop took notice, and released a 7″ single of the group’s songs “Sleep it Off” and “Half Empty”. Following this the band toured with Hum in 1998. A third full-length, Starless, was released on a label run by members of Descendents, Owned and Operated, in 2000. A fourth LP, The Egg, would follow before the group broke up in 2002. This was recorded and produced at Matt Talbott’s recording studio, Great Western Record Recorders in Tolono IL. Allen Epley is in The Life and Times. Shiner’s 3rd studio album, Starless, from 2000, is now available on vinyl.]

21. Todd Rundgren – “A Dream Goes On Forever”

[The 5th album and 2nd double album was an expansion of Rundgren’s experimentation on his previous album, A Wizard, a True Star. It showed his growing interest in the synthesizer, and its ability to expand the textures of rock music. Much of the album is intensely experimental. However, it is not without its share of pop songs. Todd also tinkers with the synth-heavy progressive sound he would take further with his later band Utopia. First issues of this LP included a large wall poster; all the lyrics appeared on one side, while the other was Todd’s cover portrait in shades of fine print, consisting of the names of 10,000 fans who had sent in the postcard included with A Wizard, a True Star. Todd Harry Rundgren (born June 22, 1948) is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and record producer who has performed a diverse range of styles as a solo artist and as a member of the band Utopia. He is characterized for his sophisticated and often-unorthodox music, flamboyant stage outfits, and his later experiments with interactive entertainment. He also produced innovative music videos, pioneered forms of multimedia, and was an early adopter and promoter of various computer technologies, such as using the Internet as a means of music distribution in the late 1990s. A native of Philadelphia, Rundgren began his professional career in the mid 1960s, forming the psychedelic band Nazz in 1967. Two years later, he left Nazz to pursue a solo career and immediately scored his first US top 40 hit with “We Gotta Get You a Woman” (1970). His best-known songs include “Hello It’s Me” and “I Saw the Light” from Something/Anything? (1972), which have heavy rotation on classic rock radio stations, and the 1983 single “Bang the Drum All Day”, which is featured in many sports arenas, commercials and movie trailers. Although lesser known, “Couldn’t I Just Tell You” (1972) was influential to many artists in the power pop genre. His 1973 album A Wizard, a True Star remains an influence on later generations of “bedroom” musicians. [4th studio album by American rock band LCD Soundsystem, released on September 1, 2017 through DFA and Columbia. It was first announced on January 5, 2016, the day after it was revealed that the band was reuniting after a disbandment lasting nearly five years. It is the band’s first album in seven years, following This Is Happening (2010). Prior to release, LCD Soundsystem performed at large music festivals as well as smaller shows to promote their reunion. “Call the Police” and “American Dream” were released together as the album’s lead single on May 5, 2017, and “Tonite” was released as the second single on August 16, 2017. The album received widespread acclaim from music critics. The album performed well commercially and became the band’s first number-one album in the United States.]

3. The Mynabirds – “Shouting at the Dark”

[4th release from The Mynabirds, indie pop band founded by singer-songwriter and pianist Laura Burhenn, who was previously one half of the Washington, D.C. indie duo Georgie James. Burhenn formed The Mynabirds in 2009, and shortly after signed to Saddle Creek Records and relocated to Omaha, Nebraska. The sound has been described by Pitchfork as “…openhearted, politically engaged, feminist pop that, miraculously, never veers into schmaltz.” After years of classical piano and stints singing and playing keyboards in rock bands and electronica projects in Washington, D.C., Burhenn founded her own record label, Laboratory Records, and began releasing solo work. Burhenn’s first solo record “Not Ashamed to Say” was released in 1999 and is a collection of thirteen songs written from 1994 to 1998. After releasing a split 7″ in 2003, Burhenn released the full length “Wanderlust” in 2004. In 2005, Burhenn teamed up with John Davis, drummer of defunct DC trio Q and Not U, to form Georgie James. Laura first worked with Saddle Creek in 2007 on Georgie James’ debut LP “Places.” The duo parted ways in late 2008.]

4. Kevin Morby – “Aboard My Train”

[4th release from Kevin Robert Morby born April 2, 1988, and learned to play guitar when he was 10. In his teens he formed the band Creepy Aliens. 17-year-old Morby dropped out of Blue Valley Northwest High School, got his GED, and moved from his native Kansas City to Brooklyn in the mid-2000s, supporting himself by working bike delivery and café jobs. He later joined the noise-folk group Woods on bass. While living in Brooklyn, he became close friends and roommates with Cassie Ramone of the punk trio Vivian Girls, and the two formed a side project together called The Babies, who released albums in 2011 and 2012. He began a solo career in 2013 releasing his debut album Harlem River with positive reviews. His 2nd album Still Life was released in 2014. 5. Sheer Mag – “Just Can’t Get Enough”

[Sheer Mag is an American rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, formed in 2014. Members include:Tina Halladay, Kyle Seely, Hart Seely, Matt Palmer, Ian Dykstra A combination of 1970s rock and punk ethos, the band continued to gather attention and has released three 7-inch EPs as of March 2016. In January 2015, Rolling Stone featured the band as one of “10 New Artists You Need To Know”, describing them as “a gang of punks with a not-so-secret love of Seventies classic rock.”Four of five band members attended the State University of New York at Purchase. In 2016, the band was part of the Coachella 2016 line-up and performed on Late Night with Seth Myers. On May 10, 2017, Sheer Mag released “Need To Feel Your Love,” the first track off their first full-length record, Need To Feel Your Love.]

[Produced by Krystle Warren and Ben Kane (D’Angelo, Emily King, PJ Morton). Recorded, engineered, and mixed by Ben Kane. Written & performed by Krystle Warre. Mixed at The Garden, Brooklyn. Mastered & cut by Alex DeTurk at Masterdisk. Last year in Krystle Warren premiered this song and her other new songs from this album at the Middle of the Map Fest in a packed room at Californos in Westport and later at The Polsky Theatre for the Performing Arts Series of Johnsons County Community College. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” On the radio show last year Krystle shared inspirations for this record, early gospel recordings, that crossed over into Jazz from Pharoah Sanders, Edwin Hawkins, and The Swan Silvertones. Originally from KC, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label, Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs: A Time You May Embrace” a recording from a 13-day session in Brooklyn, where she recorded 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections.]

7. Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals – “Shine”

[Benjamin Chase Harper (born October 28, 1969) is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Harper plays an eclectic mix of blues, folk, soul, reggae and rock music and is known for his guitar-playing skills, vocals, live performances, and activism. He has released twelve regular studio albums, mostly through Virgin Records and has toured internationally. Harper is a three-time Grammy Award winner, with awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album in 2005 and Best Blues Album in 2014. Harper was born in Pomona, California. His late father, Leonard, was of African-American and Cherokee ancestry, and his mother, Ellen Chase-Verdries, is Jewish. His maternal great-grandmother was a Russian-Lithuanian Jew. His parents divorced when he was five years old, and he grew up with his mother’s family. Harper has two brothers, Joel and Peter. Harper began playing guitar as a child. His maternal grandparents’ music store The Folk Music Center and Museum laid a foundation of folk and blues for the artist, complemented by regular patrons Leonard Cohen, Taj Mahal, John Darnielle, and David Lindley and quotes of William Shakespeare and Robert Frost made often by his grandfather. D. Rashaan Gilmore is a life-long resident of Kansas City. He is community connector, organizer and collaborator. He joins us to share information about his new radio show, ‘Unbossed and Unbothered w/ D. Rashaan’ that can be heard right here on 90.1 FM KKFI, on the 3rd Saturday of each month, at 1:00 pm, during The Tenth Voice. D. Rashaan Gilmore is passionate about making a difference in the LGBTQ community of color. His current project is BlaqOut, a newly formed organization which seeks to organize and mobilize the black, gay community in Kansas City and develop a leadership core. Gilmore has previously managed multiple significant HIV/ AIDS awareness and prevention grants for the Kansas City CARE Clinic. And also served as the Senior Field Organizer for PROMO, Missouri’s statewide LGBT equality and advocacy organization.

Last month D. Rashaan premiered his new radio program: ‘Unbossed and Unbothered w/ D. Rashaan’, on The Tenth Voice. During his first show he interviewed John Eligon, reporter for the New York Times AND featured a live musical performance from the St. Louis-based artist, MAVEN LEE aka Trent Omar Ramsey.

D. Rashaan Gilmore said in an interview (The Phoenix Newsletter / May 31, 2017 written by Joel Barrett) “I believe in living out loud.”

He also said, “I feel like I’m in a position to help others and I take that responsibility seriously, however, I can’t talk about what impact I have had in Kansas City without talking about the impact Kansas City has had on me.”

In the Phoenix Newsletter piece he said, “I don’t believe in practice what you preach. To me, that is too high a standard. I believe in preaching what you practice. I can tell you and show you what has worked for me and that alone. Everything else I’m aspiring to and we can work on that together.”

D, Rashaan Gilmore is particularly passionate about making a difference in the LGBTQ community of color. Recently, he’s found a home for his voice in service of marginalized and stigmatized communities where he brings his candor, intelligence and wit to empower individuals to assert their right to be visible and thrive.

His current project is BlaqOut, a newly formed organization which seeks to organize and mobilize the black, gay community in Kansas City and develop a leadership core.

BlaqOut has received funding for a major community needs assessment of Kansas City’s black, 18- to 34-year-old MSM community. MSM is a term used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that means men who have sex with men.

Gilmore has previously managed multiple significantly-sized SAMHSA and CDC-funded HIV/ AIDS awareness and prevention grants for the Kansas City CARE Clinic.

D. Rashaan Gilmore calls himself a “serial entrepreneur.” His first business was a bakery, that he started as a 14 year old teenager.

His newest company is ‘Nuts & Bolts’, a premier lifestyle brand for men, that will launch its debut collection of sustainably produced garments and accessories in 2018.

As an outspoken social justice advocate and passionate serial entrepreneur with deep roots in the business, civic and non-profit communities in Kansas City and beyond.

8. The War On Drugs – “Holding On”

[The 4th studio album from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, band formed in 2005. The band consists of Adam Granduciel (vocals, guitar), David Hartley (bass), Robbie Bennett (keyboards), Charlie Hall (drums), Jon Natchez (saxophone, keyboards) and Anthony LaMarca (guitar). Founded by close collaborators Granduciel and Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs released their debut studio album, Wagonwheel Blues, in 2008. Vile departed shortly after its release to focus on his solo career. The band’s second studio album Slave Ambient was released in 2011 to favorable reviews and extensive touring. Written and recorded following extensive touring and a period of loneliness and depression for primary songwriter Granduciel, the band’s third album, Lost in the Dream, was released in 2014 to widespread critical acclaim and increased exposure. Previous collaborator Charlie Hall joined the band as its full-time drummer during the recording process, with saxophonist Jon Natchez and additional guitarist Anthony LaMarca accompanying the band for its world tour.]

9. Hurray For The Riff Raff – “Living In The City”

[Hurray for the Riff Raff is an American folk-blues and Americana band from New Orleans, Louisiana formed by lead singer and songwriter Alynda Segarra. Segarra was raised by her aunt Nereida in the Bronx where she developed an early appreciation for doo-wop and Motown. She is of Puerto Rican descent. Her mother was former New York City Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra. Segarra became a regular attendee of hardcore punk shows at ABC No Rio when she was young. She left her home in the Bronx at age 17, spending time crossing North America, hopping freight trains. During this time, around 2007, Segarra became a part of the Dead Man Street Orchestra, a band that was documented in a photo essay by Time Magazine in 2007. After two self-released albums, 2008’s It Don’t Mean I Don’t Love You and 2010’s Young Blood Blues, Hurray for the Riff Raff released a self-titled CD composed of Segarra’s favorite songs from those records on Loose Music in Europe on March 21, 2011. Tracks from the band’s debut release received airplay on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music. In February 2011, the band were featured in an article in The Times, based around the HBO TV series, Treme, with their track “Daniella” being listed in their selection of New Orleans’ essential songs. In May 2012, Hurray for the Riff Raff released Look Out Mama on their own label, Born to Win Records. Loose Music released Look Out Mama in Europe on August 20, 2012. The album was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee at The Bomb Shelter Studios and produced by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes).In February 2014, Hurray for the Riff Raff had their ATO Records debut, Small Town Heroes. The record features original songs written or co-written by Segarra, and features fiddler Yosi Perlstein, keyboard player Casey McAllister, and two members of The Deslondes: Sam Doores on guitar and Dan Cutler on bass.]

[Recorded May 2017 at Weights & Measures Soundlab, Kansas City, Missouri. Engineered and produced by Duane Trower. Kansas City based. Giant’s Chair was a band from fall of 1993 to the summer of 1997. Singer-songwriter / guitarist Scott Hobart and bassist Byron Collum met at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1989. Eventually, they moved to Collum’s hometown of Green Bay, WI to play with drummer, Paul Ackerman and form the ‘post-hardcore power-trio’ GIANTS CHAIR in 1993. The band moved back to Kansas City soon thereafter to be a part of the burgeoning, mid-90’s KC rock scene – sharing bills with Germbox, Season To Risk, Molly McGuire and Shiner. After being signed to Caulfield Records out of Lincoln NE. on the strength of their debut 7″ single, GIANTS CHAIR recorded 2 critically-acclaimed full-length albums and toured the U.S. twice. Though Hobart would shift styles to front the honky-tonk country band, Rex Hobart & The Misery Boys (Bloodshot Records) while Collum and Ackerman continued with other rock projects, GIANTS CHAIR has continued to play the occasional show in Kansas City over the years and has recently released two new songs and a video – as well as letting it be known that they are working on material for their 3rd studio album. Hobart says GIANTS CHAIR’s best-known earliest influences would probably be bands like Fugazi, Swervedriver, Drive Like Jehu and Jawbox.]

The album’s title makes a direct and heartfelt reference to a real-life L.A. musician, long presumed dead, who resurfaced online in 2007 after 35 reclusive years to pen his autobiography and tragic life story in a series of blogs and YouTube tirades. “His book and life resonated with me to such a degree,” Pink states, “that I felt a need to dedicate my latest record to him.” Dedicated to Bobby Jameson begins at the end and ends at the beginning. “We follow the protagonist through a battery of tests and milestones, the first of which sees him reborn into life out of death,” Pink explains, referencing the opening track “Time To Meet Your God.” “From there, he seesaws his way between the innocent love and the rock-solid edifice of childhood-worn trauma that together constitute his lifelong initiation into the realm of artifice and theatrical disposability.” Ariel Pink started as a visual artist before becoming a recording artist in the late ‘90s while attending Cal Arts. Drawing on iconoclasts and trailblazers like the Shaggs, the Cure, the Velvet Underground, Destroy All Monsters, Cabaret Voltaire, and R. [Foxygen is an American indie rock duo from Westlake Village, California, formed in 2005. The band consists of Jonathan Rado and Sam France. They have released four albums and a number of self-released EPs. Rado and France started their band in high school when both were fifteen. After their formation in 2005, the band played experimental music; influenced by psychedelia and avant-garde. They self-released four EPs between 2007 and 2011. In early 2011, they were ‘discovered’ by producer Richard Swift after handing him one of their EPs at a Mynabird’s show in New York. The group were later signed on to Jagjaguwar Records and their first studio album, Take the Kids Off Broadway, was released by Jagjaguwar on July 24, 2012. On January 22, 2013, Jagjaguwar released Foxygen’s second album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic. This album was produced by Richard Swift and recorded at his National Freedom studio. The record was preceded by the single “Shuggie,” released on October 4, 2012. In March 2013, Foxygen was named one of Fuse TV’s 30 must-see artists at SXSW. The band has gained a reputation for its unhinged live shows and maniacal behavior of lead singer France. In 2014, for their tours promoting the sprawling double album …And Star Power, the group expanded to a nine-piece including three back-up singer/dancers. The band released their fourth LP, the theatrical Hang, on January 20, 2017, via Jagjaguwar. The album features collaborations with The Lemon Twigs, the Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd and a 40+ piece orchestra arranged by Trey Pollard and Matthew E White. The Irish Times described the album as “Theatrical is an apt description of this collection as a whole,” while noting that the album “edges perilously close to pastiche”.]

Erica Joy was Born April 8, 1991. She is 26 years old. She grew up in Springfield Missouri went to Kickapoo High, class of 2009. She came to nKansas City on a cross-country / track scholarship. She spent a few years running in Kansas City before discovering the music community. Erica Joy graduated from UMKC in 2013.

Short bio: In 2015 her first single “Fun to Hold You” was released and remained in Homegrown Buzz’s rotation for over a year. EJ then released a full EP titled “Introduction” on February 3rd 2017 at Record Bar in Kansas City. After the release of the EP, Joy gained much love from critics and fans wanting to see what she will do next and also “leaving the tracks on repeat in the car.”

There has never been a time where Erica has started singing and the room didn’t stop, even if for a few seconds to admire her voice. It doesn’t matter what genre or style she sings in, she’s going to tell you a story and she’s going to make you feel things. It has perhaps never been described better than “she’ll turn you into a puddle of melted butter” reviewed by “I Heart Local Music’s” take of Ej’s performance at Middle of the Map. Her voice is dreamy and haunting. It’s a calling, it’s Erica Joy.

17. Jack Johnson – “My Mind Is For Sale”

[7th studio album by musician Jack Johnson (born May 18, 1975) singer-songwriter, musician, actor, record producer, documentary filmmaker and a former professional surfer. The album’s lead single, titled “My Mind Is for Sale”, was released on July 14, 2017. It is the first of Jack’s releases since his 2013 album From Here to Now to You. The album was produced by a friend of Jack Johnson, Robbie Lackritz, and recorded at Mango Tree Studio, just as many of his others were. The album was mostly inspired by the sayings of Donald Trump, surfing, and camping. Also, Johnson had just recently worked on the short documentary, “Smog of the Sea”, and released his song “Fragments”. The documentary took a one-week journey through the sea to study animals, and sea creatures. This got Johnson thinking about what Trump has said about pollution and global warming, and has also included this in his album. Johnson’s songs were mostly written while he was camping in the wilderness, or on boats. This was because his home studio is too quiet and you can hear your thoughts when you are trying to write, which makes it not such a productive writing place. “I wrote these songs when I was out of [cellular] reception and phones can’t ring, there’s not a lot else to do, so we play a lot of guitar,” Johnson says. On these trips, Johnson brought his backpack with a ukulele in it and with an acoustic guitar.]

18. Iron & Wine – “Call It Dreaming”

[6th full-length studio album by Iron & Wine which is the musical project of Samuel “Sam” Ervin Beam (born July 26, 1974). He has released five studio albums, several EPs and singles, as well as a few download-only releases, which include a live album (a recording of his 2005 Bonnaroo performance). He occasionally tours with a full band. Beam was raised in South Carolina before moving to Virginia and then Florida to attend school. He now resides in Durham, North Carolina. The name Iron & Wine is taken from a dietary supplement named “Beef, Iron & Wine” that he found in a general store while shooting a film. Beam was raised in Chapin, South Carolina, where his father worked in land management and his mother was a schoolteacher. When he was a child, his family took regular trips to the country, where his grandfather ran a farm. He attended Seven Oaks Elementary School, Chapin Middle School, and Chapin High School. While home from college, he was a waiter at California Dreaming restaurant in Columbia. Beam earned a bachelor’s degree in art from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He specialized in painting before graduating from the Florida State University Film School with an MFA degree. Before the release of the first Iron & Wine album, Beam’s main source of income was as a professor of film and cinematography at the University of Miami and Miami International University of Art & Design. He had been writing songs for over seven years before a friend lent him a four-track recorder. He began making demos and gave one to his friend Michael Bridwell, brother of Band of Horses lead singer, Ben Bridwell. Michael handed it to Mike McGonigal, editor of Yeti magazine, who chose “Dead Man’s Will”, later released on In the Reins, for inclusion on one of his magazine’s compilation CDs. Beam later came to the attention of Sub Pop Records co-owner, Jonathan Poneman, who contacted Beam to propose a deal.Beam released his first Iron & Wine album, The Creek Drank the Cradle, on the Sub Pop label in 2002. Beam wrote, performed, recorded and produced the album in his home studio. Featuring acoustic guitars, banjo, and slide guitar, the album’s music has been compared to that of Nick Drake, Simon and Garfunkel, Elliott Smith, Neil Young and John Fahey. Also in 2002, Beam recorded a cover of The Postal Service’s then-unreleased song “Such Great Heights”. Rather than being included on an Iron & Wine release, the track was initially included as a b-side of the original version by The Postal Service. It was later included on the B-sides and rarities album, Around the Well. He followed up his debut album in 2003 with The Sea & The Rhythm, an EP containing other home-recorded tracks with a similar style to this debut.]

Originally the lead singer of drone-folk band Gowns, she released her debut album Little Sketches on Tape in 2010 on Night People, an independent music label founded by former Raccoo-oo-oon member Shawn Reed. In 2011 EMA released her second album Past Life Martyred Saints, which received positive reviews from Pitchfork Media, Drowned in Sound, and the NME. After releasing her debut album, EMA was named “New Band of the Day” by The Guardian and “Artist to Watch” by Rolling Stone. In 2011 she performed “Endless, Nameless” for Spin’s twentieth anniversary tribute to Nirvana’s album Nevermind. Her song “The Grey Ship” was used on an episode of Adult Swim’s Off the Air, and in the 2014 Carter Smith film Jamie Marks Is Dead. She made her network television debut performing on Late Show with David Letterman on August 26, 2014.]

These are some of the hardest working musicians in Kansas City. Their self-titled, full-length, debut release, Molly Picture Club, was one of our Best Recordings of 2012. The blog talks about how the band went back to the blackboard, to assess what the next phase of Molly Picture Club was going to look like.

“We talked about Madonna. We talked about how some bands seem to stay the same and some continually evolve. We talked a lot, but everyone agreeing what direction we wanted to truly go was another thing. This isn’t really a negative thing and in fact, from what I hear, is pretty common in all relationships. So we played in a space for awhile that had no direction, no end goal, no purpose other than to jam.”

“We talked about adding a bass player, since our bass tracks were pre-recorded and pumped through Matt’s Mac top. To some degree, it was nice because there wasn’t an additional schedule in the mix (we are all pretty busy the way it is), and no 150 lb. bass amp to lug around. Outside of playing live, it was also convenient to just plug in at the studio and record a bass part and then pick up a guitar and start playing to it.”

“Not having a bassist also came with it’s limitations. We are basically unable to change the song format on a whim, or go on a tangent during live performances.”

“In a way, this EP is a testimony of MPC finding its borders with the set of tools we had been working with for the past three years. Things change inevitably and the transition between seasons is undefinable and often relieving, and I think that’s the place this album comes from. But as Andre 3000 once said, “Ya’ll don’t wanna listen to me, you just wanna dance.”

11. Efterklang – “Dreams Today”

[Copenhagen, Denmark, based indie rock band, formed in December 2000. The band has recorded four studio albums. Piramida is an abandoned mining town located deep within the Arctic Circle. In August 2010, French filmmaker Vincent Moon and Efterklang’s 8 piece-live band met up on this island off the Danish coast. The objective was to shoot a film the same length as an album. The result was: EFTERKLANG: THE GHOST OF PIRAMIDA where the group goes on an audio treasure hunt in the empty buildings of the abandoned town, while the narrator, former Piramida citizen Alexander, takes us back to a bygone era, when Piramida flourished and the immigrant Russian miners and their families lived in a Soviet parallel society far from the brutal reality of their homeland. The film makes it’s KC debut at the Middle of The Map Film Festival.]

Chris Haghirian has worked for The KC Star for 13 years and helped launch INK in April of 2008. Chris works on the marketing side of INK and puts together all of the music promotions. Chris has been instrumental in the organization of The Middle of The Map Fest. In addition he has helped organize The MidCoast Takeover of SXSW Music Festival featuring KC and Lawrence area bands. Chris also is a regular co-host and contributor to The Mailbox, a weekly podcast radio show produced and hosted by Michael Byars that is available the the Midwest Music Foundation’s website: midwestmusicfound.org.

Nathan Ruesch is co-founder and manager of The Record Machine, an Independent KC based record label, founded in 2003. With Chris Haghirian, Nathan is the co-mastermind, of The Middle of The Map Festival. Nathan also DJs in clubs from time to time and like Chris is a Passionate lover of music.

“Greetings from Tim Buckley” follows the story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s eminent 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he learns to embrace all of his feelings toward the father who abandoned him – longing, anger, forgiveness, and love. Culminating a cathartic performance of his father’s most famous songs, Jeff’s debut stuns the audience and launches his career as one of the greatest young musicians of his time.

12. Jeff Buckley – “Hallelujah”

[American singer-songwriter and guitarist. His biological father, Tim Buckley, was a singer-songwriter who released a series of highly acclaimed folk and jazz albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Jeff Buckley said he only met his father once at the age of eight. After his father died of a drug overdose in 1975, he took on his father’s name Buckley and his real first name, which he found on his birth certificate. After a decade as a session guitarist in Los Angeles, Buckley made his public singing debut at a tribute concert for his father called “Greetings from Tim Buckley”. The event was held at St. Ann’s Church in Brooklyn on April 26, 1991. Buckley rejected the idea of the concert as a springboard to his career. Buckley gained a following in the early 1990s for his live performances of Dylan and Cohen songs at venues in Manhattan’s East Village. After rebuffing much interest from record labels he signed with Columbia, recruited a band, and recorded what would be his only studio album, Grace. Over the following two years, the band toured widely to promote the album. In 1997, Buckley moved to Memphis, Tennessee, to resume work on the album, to be titled My Sweetheart the Drunk. While awaiting the arrival of his band from New York, he drowned during a spontaneous evening swim, fully clothed, in the Wolf River when he was caught in the wake of a passing boat. His body was found on June 4, 1997.]

13. Connie Dover & Bob Walkenhorst – “The Streets of Laredo ” (Live)

The Boston Globe called Connie Dover “the finest folk ballad singer America has produced since Joan Baez.” An Emmy Award-winning producer and composer, she has released four critically acclaimed albums, and can be heard on many soundtracks and recordings of folk and world music. Her acclaimed vocal arrangements of Scottish, Irish and early American music have been featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition, A Prairie Home Companion, and Thistle and Shamrock. Connie Dover released her first book of poetry, Winter Count, in 2010 and is a recipient of the Speakeasy Prize in Poetry as well as the Yellowstone and Teton Song Contest Grand Prize.

Bob Walkenhorst is best known for his recording and live performances with The Rainmakers. He has released 6 successful albums. Popular author, Stephen King twice quoted lyrics from Rainmakers songs in his best seller The Tommyknockers and again in his 1991 novel Gerald’s Game. The song “Let My People Go-Go” gave Walkenhorst and the Rainmakers their first Top-20 single on the British charts. Bob Walkenhorst is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, drummer, producer, host, organizer and painter. Always making it look so easy when he plays and sings for annual benefits for 90.1 FM and other community service organizations. Bob hosts a weekly live show every Wednesday Night at 7:00 pm at the record Bar, and The Rainmakers continue to sell out local venues like Knuckleheads when the reunite for special shows.
