Geoff likes playing Super Mario Brothers music on his accordion. Mikołaj likes listening to Górecki’s Symphony No. 3 on his stereo. Geoff likes having loud sex with Dawn. Mikołaj doesn’t like listening to Geoff having loud sex with Dawn. One night, Mikołaj blasts his favorite record until Geoff comes up to silence the music. These housemates may soon discover that true communication occurs in the spaces between sounds.

Alicia Solombrino was born and raised in Kansas City and Alicia explained that moment when she knew that she wanted to be a performer. It was when she was in kindergarten. “I saw Madonna on the (1990) MTV (Video Music) Awards performing Vogue,” she said.

Along with being lead singer, Alicia is also known as a videographer, director, photographer, promotions manager, and web designer, she has been able to put her talents to use in many different ways and with many different venues working with many bands including The Republic Tigers and Alacartoona.

Guitarist Thomas Becker, is a Harvard Law graduate. he has been working representing victims of a Bolivian massacre in a civil lawsuit against the country’s former president.

Beautiful Bodies have been playing and touring since 2005, sharing the stage with bands such as Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Shiny Toy Guns, My Chemical Romance, Cake, Har Mar Superstar. What are your favorite experiences?

[Janelle Monáe moved from Kansas City, Kansas to New York to study theatre at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Her original plan was to pursue a career on Broadway, but she soon changed her mind and returned to music. After moving to Atlanta, GA, where she met OutKast’s Big Boi, Monáe founded the Wondaland Arts Society with like-minded young artists and made appearances on Outcast’s Idlewild, where Janelle is featured on the songs “Call The Law” and “In Your Dreams”. In 2007, Monáe released her first solo work, titled Metropolis. A few months later she was signed to Sean “Diddy” Combs’ label, Bad Boy Records.]

Poet, Writer, Teacher, Scholar, Crystal Boson, is a PhD student in American Studies at the University of Kansas. Crystal holds both a B.A and M.A in English Literature, from the University of Missouri and Texas A&M University. Crystal’s recent poetry collection: “The Queer Texas Prayerbook,” was released by Seven Kitchens Press, Her previous work has been published in Callaloo, Pank, the Black Bottom, and in an anthology of Queer Midwestern Writers. She also has a chapbook, “The Icarus Series’ , with Seven Kitchens Press. Crystal currently lives in Lawrence Kansas, with her macbook, a basil plant named Lazarus and her cat, Delphina Jenkins Boson-Lease III.

Crystal Boson is currently living in Lawrence, working on her PhD at the University of Kansas.

One of the subjects Crystal is researching and studying is Hoodoo.

(from wikipedia) “Also known as conjure, and “Voodoo” (which strictly speaking is different in many ways) is a traditional African-American folk spirituality that developed from a number of West African, Native American, and European spiritual traditions. Hoodoo has some spiritual principles and practices similar to spiritual folkways in Haitian, Cuban, Jamaican, and New Orleans traditions. Hoodoo seems to have evolved in the Mississippi Delta where the concentration of slaves had been dense. Hoodoo then spread throughout the Southeast as well as North along the Mississippi as African Americans left the Delta beginning in the 1930s.”

Prior to KU this Crystal received her Masters Degree from Texas A&M. Texas A&M is located in College Station, Texas. Crystal talked about how living in College Station, Texas, and the source material for her book of poetry, “The Queer Texas Prayerbook” published by Seven Kitchens Press.

While living there she was stopped for “driving while black” 98 times in four years.

Crystal is now working on new poems for a series called: Kansas Up South.

Crystal read several poems for her new collection.

In Missouri and Kansas, and perhaps in our entire country, our society doesn’t really like to discuss issue of race and our countries history of slavery and discrimination. Crystal never shys away from dealing with these themes in her original works.

This past Saturday evening the verdict came from the jury in Sanford, Florida, and George Zimmerman was found not guilty of charges, after he killed unarmed, 17 year-old Trayvon Martin, who was walking home to his dad’s house. The judge would not allow the issue of race to be part of the trial, but cases like these always seem to crack open the truth about where people really stand on issues of race. Crystal described her own observations about this trial and verdict.

Being identified as Lesbian, Queer, African American, Female, these identities have historically been used to hold a person back, to deny them equality, even offer that person violence and hate. Crystal has been writing about her own experiences, and her own first hand racial profiling experiences.

Claire grew up in a small farming town in Kansas, went to High School in Topeka, went to college in Nashville. You lived in Nashville for 7 years before coming to KC.

Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, performed LIVE in our 90.1 FM studios. Madisen Ward & the Mama Bear are Madisen Ward and Ruth Ward. They are a modern soulful/folk music duo. Performing mostly all original music.

Madisen Ward was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother. Last year Madisen Ward and “The Mama Bear” (his mom) – Ruth Ward recorded and released their EP, “We Burned The Cane Field.”

Madisen wrote about the release “We Burned the Cabe Field” saying, “My Mother and I play music together; not because of the relation, but because it’s what works best. This is the sound that naturally emerges when we play together, so we went with it.”

Ruth and Madisen talked about how they ended up recording with Joel Nanos at Element Recording Studios.

The cover of “We Burned The Cane Field,” is a black and white photograph of a woman and three small children, each holding a box of cracker jacks, in the narrow street of an Japanese neighborhood market area. The photo is of Madisen’s paternal grandmother, his father, aunt and uncle.

[Debut album by Canadian band. Original drummer John Rutsey performed all drum parts on the album, but was unable to go on extended tours because of diabetes and left the band after the album was released. Rutsey wrote some lyrics for the debut, but never submitted them to the band and some new lyrics had to be thrown together. He was soon replaced by Neil Peart. Rush was inducted into the rock and roll Hall of fame this year.]

13. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble – “The Sky is Crying”
from: The Sky is Crying / Epic / November 5, 1991
[Released about one year after Vaughan’s death in 1990, the album features ten previously unreleased tracks, originally recorded between 1984 and 1989. Only one title, “Empty Arms” (complete reprisal), appeared on any of the group’s previous albums. The tracks were compiled by Vaughan’s brother, Jimmie Vaughan, in an effort to release the title track. The Sky Is Crying illustrates many of Vaughan’s musical influences, including songs in the style of traditional Delta blues, Chicago blues, jump blues, jazz blues, and Jimi Hendrix. The album’s tone alternates primarily between uptempo pieces and gritty, slow blues. The album includes a Grammy-winning extended instrumental cover version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing.”]

It included the hit single “Smooth”, which featured Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas on vocals, and was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks.]

[1st single from Jackson’s 8th studio album. Dangerous sold over 35 million albums worldwide, and has been cited as one of the best-selling albums of all time that produced 4 top ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100. To prepare the audience for the TV premiere of the “Black or White” video, Epic records released the song (without the accompanying images) to radio stations just two days in advance. In a period of 24 hours, “Black or White”, described by the record company as “a rock ‘n’ roll dance song about racial harmony”, had been added to the playlists of 96 percent of 237 of the USA’s top 40 radio stations the first day of release. “Black or White” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 35. A week later it shot up to number three and in its third week, December 7, 1991, it ascended to #1, making it the fastest chart topper since The Beatles’ “Get Back” also won the Hot 100 in just three weeks in 1969. It remained at the top of the singles chart into 1992 for a total of seven weeks, making Michael Jackson the first artist to have #1 popular hits in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. In the UK, the single became the first single by an American to go into the singles chart at #1 since 1960, when “It’s Now or Never” by Elvis Presley did in the same manner. “Black or White” hit #1 in 19 countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Zimbabwe, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Israel, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. The single was certified platinum in the US, selling over one million copies and became the second best selling single of the year. Reviews of the song varied. Rolling Stone’s Allan Light in his Dangerous review, compares the song unfavorably to “Beat It”: “Neither this slow-burn solo nor the Stones-derived riff on ‘Black or White’ offers the catharsis of Eddie Van Halen’s blazing break on ‘Beat It'”.]

17. The Prodigy – “Firestarter”

[1st single from their 3rd album The Fat of the Land, and their 10th single. It featured Kieth Flint’s punky vocals which showcased him as the group’s frontman. Band members Liam Howlett & Keith Flint share songwriting credits with Kim Deal of The Breeders. The looped wah-wah guitar riff in “Firestarter” was sampled from The Breeders’ track “S.O.S.” from Last Splash. Because of the use of a sample from the 1984 single “Close (to the Edit)” songwriting credits also list Art of Noise’s then-members: Anne Dudley, Trevor Horn, J.J. Jeczalik, Gary Langan & Paul Morley. The album title comes from the old English phrase ‘living off the fat of the land.’ The album has sold over 10 million copies worldwide as of 2012. The album debuted at #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. The album has since gone double platinum, selling over 2 million copies.]

[American rock band from Isla Vista, California, formed in 1990. The band’s name spoofs that of another band, Pretty Boy Floyd. Ugly Kid Joe’s sound includes a range of styles, including rock, hard rock, funk metal and heavy metal. To date, Ugly Kid Joe have released three full-length albums, two compilation albums and two EPs. Their best selling records are As Ugly as They Wanna Be and America’s Least Wanted, were both certified double platinum by the RIAA. The band broke up in 1997, but announced a reunion in 2010.]

At 10:15, Mark talks with singer/songwriter, Madisen Ward who was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother. Madisen recorded his debut EP, “We Burned The Cane Field” with his Mother, “Mama Bear”, (Ruth Whitlock-Ward). Both played guitar, with Mama Bear harmonizing. Their debut EP was recorded in Kansas City’s Element Recording Studios by Joel Nanos.

At 11:00 Mark welcomes one of KKFI’s incredible volunteers, Phillip Bauer, who donates hundreds of hours each year helping 90.1 FM Community Radio. Phillip Bauer brings his rich, deep voice to our airwaves to play some of his favorite recordings from: Rush, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Michael Jackson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Santana, No Doubt, Ugly Kid Joe, Red Elvises, and Prodigy.

Akkilles includes David Bennett on lead vocals, guitar; Isaac Anderson, on drums; Rachel Pollock on violin, piano, percussion, and vocals; Nick Pick on Bass and vocals; and Jeff Larison on lead guitar and dobro. The band played The Middle of the Map Fest and the Crossroads Block Party.

In April, David Bennett told David Hudnall of The Pitch:

“When I play by myself, I do a lot of loops and effects and play with microphones that accentuate vocals,” Bennett says. “With the band, it’s a little more like straightforward experimental pop. I’m drawn toward what I guess you’d call ambiguous writing, and I like jacking the sound of pop music a little, both musically and lyrically.”

“I’ve spent a lot of time the past few years trying to really learn how to write and record,” Bennett says. “Now it’s getting to the point where I’m recording a lot more and getting a lot of material down. I think there’ll be another Akkilles EP in the fall and maybe another album sometime in 2014. I like doing crummy demos by myself, but it’s also cool to go into a studio with a real band.”

Major Matt Mason USA is Matthew Roth. Matt’s 1998 solo release “Me Me Me” is celebrate its 15th anniversary and Matt will travel to NYC to perform the songs live on Sunday, August 4, at Sidewalk Cafe as part of the Classic Albums Live series during the Welcome to Boog City Festival.

Matthew Roth was a large part of the New York City music community, founding Olive Juice Music; recording, mixing, and mastering music for himself and others, including Kimya Dawson, Daniel Johnston, Jeffrey Lewis, Adam Green, The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, and Toby Goodshank; and performing live as part of Schwervon! and Kansas State Flower, and solo artist as Major Matt Mason USA.

Rabbit Killer is Mark Smeltzer who has been playing and making music in Kansas City for over 20 years. Mark has collaborated with Betse Ellis, Amy Farrand, Howard Iceberg, The Wilders, Metatone and many many others. Mark is known for the creation of his own instruments from found objects. He was one of the original members of the band Trouble in Mind, and performs as a solo artist, as Rabbit Killer, The Rural Grit All Stars E.I.O., and is a cofounder of Rural Grit Music Hour every Monday Night at The Brick and also Rural Grit Records a music label that captured many of the early recordings of the Wilders, live performances at the Tic Fest and many area bands. Mark is also an actor and appeared in the film “Two Sisters.”

Mark Smeltzer, told the story of how he came to create the alter ego, Rabbit Killer.

The Rural Grit Happy Hour is one of the longest running shows in Kansas City, this weekly show has been a place for musicians to collaborate for many years, originally starting at The Grand Emporium in the 1990s.
