My Oh My! + Cat Dail + Mikal Shapiro + Instant Karma

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / Universal / Dec. 20, 1979
[WMM’s theme]

2. Black Moth Super Rainbow – “Baby’s In The Void”
from: Panic Bloom / Rad Cult Records / May 4, 2018
[American experimental electronic band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They have released 6 albums, 7 EPs, and 4 singles. The project is currently composed of frontman, singer, and songwriter Tobacco whose vocals are altered via a vocoder; keyboardist The Seven Fields of Aphelion, who often performs with a classic monosynth; drummer Iffernaut; guitarist Ryan Graveface; and bassist Pony Driver. Former members include keyboardist Father Hummingbird, who typically recorded with a polysynth, and Power Pill Fist on bass. Black Moth Super Rainbow’s music contains elements of psychedelia, folk, electronica, pop, and rock. Their distinctive sound is characterized by analog electronic instruments including the vocoder, Rhodes piano and Novatron. A Graveface Records insert included inside the album Dandelion Gum describes them as such: “Deep in the woods of western Pennsylvania vocoders hum amongst the flowers and synths bubble under the leaf-strewn ground while flutes whistle in the wind and beats bounce to the soft drizzle of a warm acid rain. As the sun peeks out from between the clouds, the organic aural concoction of Black Moth Super Rainbow starts to glisten above the trees.”]

3. The Brian Jonestown Massacre – “Melodys Actual Echo Chamber”
from: Don’t Get Lost / ‘a’ Recordings / Februry 24, 2017
[Musical project and band led by frontman Anton Newcombe. It was formed in San Francisco in the early 1990s. The group was the subject of the 2004 documentary film Dig!, and have gained media notoriety for their tumultuous working relationships as well as the erratic behaviour of leader Newcombe. The Brian Jonestown Massacre have released seventeen albums, five compilation albums, five live albums, thirteen EPs, sixteen singles as well as two various-artist compilation albums to date. The band was invented by Anton Newcombe in San Francisco in the early 1990s, shortly after moving there from Newport Beach, CA, where he grew up playing in numerous bands. While there are many legends as to how Anton came up with the group’s name, it is undeniably a portmanteau on Brian Jones, the founder and guitarist of the popular English rock band The Rolling Stones, and the infamous mass cult suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. Anton’s reasoning behind this at the time is that there appeared to him to be a lot of overlap between cult leaders and rock stars, but since then the name has taken on a meaning of its own. The Brian Jonestown Massacre music spans multiple genres including psychedelia, electronica, folk music, blues, and experimental music. The group was founded by Newcombe, Matt Hollywood, Ricky Rene Maymi, Patrick Straczek and Travis Threlkel in the early 1990s in San Francisco. The BJM has famously undergone many personnel changes, with Anton Newcombe being the only consistent member. Current members: Joel Gion on tambourine (1994–1999, 2001, 2004–present). Ricky Maymi on guitar (formerly drums & bass) (1990–1993, 2003–present). Rob Campanella on keyboard, organ (and occasionally guitar). (2000–present). Dan Allaire on drums (2002–present. Collin Hegna on bass/guitar. (2004–present). Ryan Van Kriedt on guitar (2015–present).]

from: abner the pig (feat. nick strader) – Single / Sugo / April 30, 2017

5. Wye Oak – “Lifer”
from: The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs / Merge Records / April 6, 2018
[5th studio album from indie rock duo from Baltimore, Maryland, composed of Andy Stack (drums, keyboards, backup vocals) and Jenn Wasner (vocals, guitars and bass). Their sound has been described as “earnest folk-influenced indie rock with touches of noise and dream pop” as well as indie folk. Wasner sings lead vocals and plays electric or acoustic guitar, while Stack plays both drums and keyboards, playing the drums with his feet and right hand, and the bass line with his left hand. The band was formed as Monarch in mid-2006,[1] before changing their name to Wye Oak, a reference to the former state tree of their home state of Maryland. They released their first album, If Children, independently in 2007 and subsequently signed to Merge Records in 2008. The label re-released If Children that year; a second album, The Knot, followed in 2009. Their third album, Civilian, was released in March 2011 by Merge in the US and City Slang in Europe, followed by Shriek in April 2014.[7] In 2016, they released the mini-album Tween, consisting of leftover material recorded between Civilian and Shriek.]

6. The Sea and Cake – “Any Day”
from: Any Day / Thrill Jockey Records / May 11, 2018
[11th album from Chicago based indie rock band formed in the mid 1990s. This is also their first new release in 6 years. The group formed in the mid-1990s from members of The Coctails (Archer Prewitt), Shrimp Boat (Sam Prekop and Eric Claridge), and Tortoise (John McEntire); the group’s name came from a willful reinterpretation (as the result of an accidental miscomprehension) of “The C in Cake”, a song by Gastr del Sol. Starting with 1997’s The Fawn, the group has relied on electronic sound sources, such as drum machines and synthesizers, to color its music, but has retained its distinctive post-jazz combo style. The band has shied away from releasing singles, preferring the album format. Contrary to his multi-instrumentalist role in Tortoise, John McEntire almost exclusively plays drums in The Sea and Cake. Current members include: Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, and John McEntire and each have released solo albums. The cover art of The Sea And Cake’s releases are largely paintings by member Eric Claridge and photographs by Prekop. (Postcards of some of the One Bedroom-era photos were sold on the band’s 2003 tour.) Prewitt has been involved in publishing his own comic books and doing graphic design.]

3. Joon Moon – “Tiger (Radio Edit)”
from: Tiger [EP] / Le Plan Recordings – Kwaiden Records / June 16, 2017
[Formed in 2014 in Montmartre area of Paris. Joon Moon is the meeting of House producer Julien Decoret, drummer Raphael Chassin and American expat and singer/song writer extraordinaire Krystle Warren. The Tiger EP comes after the release of 2 critically acclaimed EP’s, “Chess” and “Call Me”, and serves as another foreshadowing into their upcoming album “Moonshine Corner”, which will be released in September. After ten years of touring the world playing double bass with Marc Collin’s Nouvelle Vague ensemble, alongside excursions into house music on the Yellow Productions Art of Disco compilations, not to mention co-producing Florent Marchet’s Bamby Galaxy album, it was time for songwriter/producer/renaissance man Julien Decoret to dedicate his heart and soul to a new challenge. With Raphaël Chassin, (Hugh Coltman, Vanessa Paradis, Pauline Croze) on drums, helping out with the production and arrangements, and Sébastien Trouvé as sound engineer, Decoret set out on his retro-modern Joon Moon mission, laying out the contours of a world where trip-hop, jazz, soul and electronic music live side by side, sharing their joys and sorrows. The only missing element was that one last bit of magic, a voice that could take the project to ever-loftier heights. Enter Krystle Warren. She had worked with Rufus Wainwright, and Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside, and had made forays into house music herself by providing vocals to two cuts off Hercules and Love Affair’s, The Feast of the Broken Heart. That’s not even mentioning her own band, Krystle Warren and The Faculty – and its three albums – which display her impressive grasp of soul music, folk, blues…With Tiger, the band’s social concerns are brought to the forefront. A timely piece from a Franco-American band about the need to question authority and the power structure of society. Tiger sees its tension build up like an ominmous populist, and turns into defiance. Art and love combining in a movement towards emancipation.]

Jen Appell joins us to share music and details about her show “Arc of Joan.” In the wake of 9/11, Jen Appell co-created the original rock musical Joan the Maid (now performed as Arc of Joan). Informed by the political and social climate, the production envisioned what Joan of Arc’s life would have looked like under the microscope of modern media, reality television and the national obsession with cult of personality. In this re-envisioned workshop/production of the song cycle enhanced with slick video elements, Jen Appell and The Saints perform a minimalistic version of the musical to examine the heroine’s path of discovery, power, loss and acceptance.

The medication-addled musician relives lost love, his experience of the Vietnam War, years of political activism, and adventures into the American wilderness in this haunting, heartfelt hootenanny. The Orlando weekly describes it as “A poetic celebration of America’s original art form that is simultaneously ancient and avant-garde.”

Developed in a collaboration with award-winning “Ozark renaissance folklorist” Willi Carlisle and director Joseph Fletcher, the play is the product of five years of research, down-home poetry, field recordings, music-mentorship, and folklore amidst the misty mountains of the Arkansas Ozarks.

The son of Robert Lloyd Moreland and Connie May, Moreland’s father worked for Sunoco as an electrical engineer, and because of this job the family moved a lot. When he was a baby they moved to Northern Kentucky, across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio. Moreland credits his love for Cincinnati Reds to this time in Kentucky. When Moreland was 10 years old Moreland’s family moved from Boone County, Kentucky to Tulsa, Oklahoma and, with the help of his father, started playing the guitar. When he was 12 he started playing with a kid he went to church with who wrote songs and inspired him to start writing songs “that made sense.” Moreland grew up in a conservative Southern Baptist family. “From the time I was born up until about age 16, my entire worldview and all my opinions were pretty much solely influenced by the evangelical church. All the years since then have sort of been this slow process of figuring out where I stand now that I’m not an impressionable kid anymore. I feel like I’m done with that at this point, but it keeps showing up in songs. I guess that stuff stays in your psyche forever.”]

10:31 – Interview with Michael McQuary

Maria Vasquez Boyd & Michael McQuary

Maria Vasquez Boyd & Michael McQuary

“Michael McQuary is more than a pretty face, and he’s got a thousand, anyway. His is a talent today’s entertainment world needs more of. From Fu Manchu to Phantoms to Dietrich, Michael carries them all off to perfection, and I knew the originals. This talented entertainer perfects his transformations while allowing the audience a glimpse of the artist beneath the mask.” – Rex Reed

Stage & screen actor, Michael McQuary a master impressionist, joined us to share his unique take on the legendary monsters of film and the brightest stars of Hollywood’s golden age. Michael is the creator of the award winning one-man shows in New York City including: Matinee Idol, Man of 1001 Faces, Crystal Allan Strikes Back, My Own Space and most recently, for last year’s KC Fringe Festival “I’m Hollywood.” Michael McQuary is also a visual artist of personal portraits and life captures done with china ink that are collected internationally and he is the founder and designer for YourPowerSign.com where he creates art works of metal. Currently Michael is seen in multiple film shorts promoting the OM Film Festival and he is the star of the upcoming Mile Deep Films short film, “Corvalo.”

Michael McQuary was born and raised in Portland, Oregon in the 1960s.

Michael told us that, as a child, he had to “learn the world sideways.” “Movies took care of him, as a child.”

Michael remembers, at the age of 4, spellbound by Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula. “Look how he holds his cape!” he told his mother, and from then on, Michael’s childhood was focused on his own creative world.

Michael would do imitations of, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Katherine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, and Cab Calloway

Arriving in New York at the age of 18, Michael was enrolled in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Michael found himself drawn to the burgeoning downtown and nightclub scene, performing at the legendary Boy Bar, Bon Soir and Trocadero.

It was there that he conceived and developed Matinee Idol, a one-man cinematic collage of classic films ranging from Sunset Boulevard to Clash of the Titans.

Veteran New York cabaret impresario Erv Raible invited McQuary to bring his show to Eighty-Eights, where Michael worked his magic for five years, Playing dozens of characters and earning two 1988 Back Stage Bistro Awards for Outstanding Cabaret Debut and Best Characterization Show. This was followed by four consecutive MAC nominations.

Access cable icon Miss Sybil Bruncheon (a/k/a John Burke) invited McQuary to perform in his stage show Café Berlin, where Michael’s roles ranged from Marlene Dietrich to Cab Calloway and Bela Lugosi.

Michael’s cabaret shows also played at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theatre, the Duplex, and Judy’s Chelsea.

Michael was an acting student at the famous HB Studio in NYC, founded by Herbert Berghof in 1945 and located in Greenwich Village, New York City. In 1948, Uta Hagen joined the Studio as Berghof’s artistic partner, and the two wed ten years later. Her master classes led to the writing of her books Respect for Acting and A Challenge for the Actor.

It was at the HB Studio where Michael was discovered and cast in the revival of “The Royal Hunt of The Sun.”

After spending much of his career bringing movies to life on stage, Michael began working in film bringing his theatrical style to film.

Director Marc Briatack of Dynamarc Films saw Michael perform at the Public and began photographing him in many of his elaborate disguises. They were excited with the results and began to plan an internet serial: Fu Manchu’s Weapon of Evil.

Michael’s life in NYC gave him the opportunity to meet many people in show business including: Fred Schneider of the B-52s, Catherine Deneuve, Sonny Bono, Rachel Welch.

Michael’s NYC apartment was filmed by CNN and was styled like a mysterious residence in a forbidden city. Part living space part movie set.

Michael moved to Kansas City a couple of Halloweens ago. Last year he brought his one man show, “I’m Hollywood” to the KC Fringe Festival.

Michael has been embraced by the area film community, appearing in multiple short promotional pieces to the OM film festival.

Michael has been part of photographic shoots with Ron Megee, and Philip Hooser.

Michael is also the star of the upcoming Mile Deep Films short film, “Corvalo,” directed by Anthony Ladeish.

Michael McQuary is also a visual artist of personal portraits and life captures done with china ink that are collected internationally.

Michael is also and the founder and designer for YourPowerSign.com where he creates real jewelry from precious metals that are one of a kind works of art.

Brenton Cook and Dedric Moore on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Brenton Cook and Dedric Moore on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Dedric Moore is a musician, songwriter, producer, organizer, member of the bands Monta At Odds, and Mysterious Clouds. Dedric Moore is also the founder KC Psych Fest.

KC Psych Fest kicks off its fourth year with a night of adventurous music on Aug. 1 at The Riot Room in Kansas City, MO. Co-sponsored by Haymaker Records, Mills Record Company, It’s a Beautiful Day, and Summer Moon Promotions, the show will feature performances by Ancient River, Mysterious Clouds, HMPH!, Psychotic Reaction, Drugs & Attics, and have a special DJ set by Mod Professor.

The 2015 KC Psych Fest will be spread across multiple dates in Kansas City in the late summer and fall with an emphasis on acts that excitingly venture outside of conventional music. More dates and appearances will be announced later. The mission of the festival is to present mind-expanding music from different music genres and provide a platform for Kansas City artists pushing the boundaries of music. This year’s festival continues to build on the positive experiences of the previous three years.

The August 1 show is headlined by psychedelic rock band Ancient River. Based out of the UK and Austin, TX, their wall-of-sound barrage has been honed by extensive touring across the United States and beyond – including appearances at Austin Psych Fest (2010-2012), Los Angeles’ Psycho De Mayo (2014), Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia (2012) and Milwaukee Psych Festival (2015).

Psychotic Reaction joins the show from rural Oklahoma. Showcasing high energy rock & roll, they draw comparisons to The MC5, Stooges, Roky Erickson, and Skip James.

Three Kansas City acts are featured at the event too. Mysterious Clouds is a new band that explores aspects of cosmic space music and is comprised of members of Monta at Odds, Expo ’70, and HMPH! Their first release, Vibrations Shake the Path on Haymaker Records, explores the classic 60’s mono mix approach. HMPH! is the two-piece math-rock outfit of Ryan Lee Toms (RLT) and Jonathan Thatch. With just drums, guitar, looping pedal, and effects, the concept is simple but the music is not. Their debut full-length vinyl release comes out in August on Haymaker Records. Drugs & Attics are a garage punk trio and have been quickly building a name in the Kansas City music scene. The night closes with the psych / mod / garage groove stylings of DJ act Mod Professor, the alias of legendary Kansas City / New York DJ Ray Velasquez. The event starts at 8:30PM and is a full night of entertainment.
