6. Ken Nordine – “Blue”
from: Colors / Ken Nordine / 1966
[Colors is a “word jazz” album by voice-over and recording artist Ken Nordine. It was commissioned by the Fuller Paint Company to write radio advertisement spots, but after a few commercials became popular, it evolved to become an album of 34 songs. Each track personifies a different color or hue. Ken Nordine (born April 13, 1920) is an American voice-over and recording artist, best known for his series of Word Jazz albums. His deep, resonant voice has also been featured in many commercial advertisements and movie trailers. One critic wrote that “you may not know Ken Nordine by name or face, but you’ll almost certainly recognize his voice.” The son of Theresia and Nore S. Nordine, a contractor, Ken Nordine was born in Cherokee, Iowa. The family later moved to Chicago, where he attended Lane Technical College Prep High School and the University of Chicago. He has three sons with his wife Beryl, whom he married in 1945. During the 1940s, he was heard on The World’s Great Novels and other radio programs broadcast from Chicago. One of which, Honore de Balzac’s short story “Une passion dans le désert”, was recorded for the 1955 album Passion in the Desert. In 1955 he provided the voiceover on Billy Vaughn’s version of Shifting Whispering Sands, which peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. He subsequently attracted wider attention when he recorded the aural vignettes on Word Jazz (Dot, 1957). Love Words, Son of Word Jazz (Dot, 1958) and his other albums in this vein feature Nordine’s narration over cool jazz by the Fred Katz Group featuring Chico Hamilton recording under an alias. Nordine began performing and recording such albums at the peak of the beat era and was associated with the poetry-and-jazz movement. However, it has been observed that some of Nordine’s writings “are more akin to Franz Kafka or Edgar Allan Poe” than to the beats. Many of his word jazz tracks feature critiques of societal norms. Some are lightweight and humorous, while others reveal dark, paranoid undercurrents and bizarre, dream-like scenarios. Nordine’s DVD, The Eye Is Never Filled, (2005) provides a flow of abstract visuals to accompany the audio tracks. In 1990 Nordine was approached by Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead to be the anchor for their New Year’s Eve radio broadcast from Oakland, California.[6] For the broadcast he recorded some improvisations with Garcia, drummer Mickey Hart and Egyptian musician Hamza El-Din. This subsequently lead to an album Devout Jazz, released on the Grateful Dead’s own label in 1991 and Upper Limbo in 1993[7] and appearances with the band such as their show at Rosemont, Illinois in March 1993.]

7. Tunde Olaniran – “Symbol”
from: Stranger / Magic Wheel / October 5, 2018
[Second full length album from Flint Michigan based Tunde Olaniran. In 2014, Olaniran released his first EP titled Yung Archetype (see: Jungian archetypes). Olaniran released his first full-length album in 2015 titled Transgressor. NPR’s Stephen Thompson notes, Olaniran, “presides over a bighearted sound and style that revolve around spirited statements of affirmation, a sprawling artistic palette and the pursuit of boldness in every sense of the word… It all adds up to a finely calibrated mix of purpose and playfulness, executed to stylish perfection.”]

Spinning Tree Theatre introduces Kansas City to The Nance

Spinning Tree Theatre proudly continues Season 8 November 2-18 with the Kansas City premiere of Douglas Carter Beane’s The Nance, the 2013 Lincoln Center-produced Broadway play featuring music by Glen Kelly.

Beane is also the writer of “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar,” As Bees in Honey Drown and The Little Dog Laughed.

The Nance tells the story of burlesque’s stereotypically camp character and master of comic double entendre, almost always played by a straight man (so to speak). Mayor LaGuardia wants to clean up the city before the 1937 World’s Fair, and one of his targets is burlesque. What happens when our nance is gay…and has fallen in love? The Nance – equal parts drama and comedy – includes generous splashes of outrageous song-and-dance burlesque sketches.

Spinning Tree Managing Director Andrew Grayman-Parkhurst: “The Nance suits our aesthetic beautifully: wildly entertaining while meaningful. We believe this will be an introduction to most of our patrons about the comic representation of gay men in burlesque. It’s a unique opportunity to step back in time with a highly theatrical cast of characters.”

Artistic Director Michael Grayman-Parkhurst and Nicole Marie Green co-direct, continuing their collaboration from 2017’s Casa Valentina.

Andy Perkins in Spinning Tree Theatre’s “The Nance”

8. The Get Up Kids – “Better This Way”
from: Kicker EP / Polyvinyl Record Co / To Be Released June 8, 2018
[Matt Pryor on vocals & guitars, Jim Suptic on guitar, Rob Pope on bass, James Dewees on keyboards, Ryan Pope on drums. On March 29, 2018, Polyvinyl Records announced on their Instagram account that they had signed the band and that new music will be coming soon. The Get Up Kids are an American rock band from Kansas City, Missouri. Formed in 1995, the band was a major player in the mid-1990s emo scene, otherwise known as the “second wave” of emo music. As they gained prominence, they began touring with bands such as Green Day and Weezer before becoming headliners themselves, eventually embarking on international tours of Japan and Europe. They founded Heroes & Villains Records, an imprint of the successful indie rock label Vagrant Records. While the imprint was started to release albums by The Get Up Kids, it served as a launching pad for several side-projects such as The New Amsterdams and Reggie and the Full Effect. The Get Up Kids were viewed throughout their existence as a prototypical emo band, having been major players in the Midwest emo movement of the mid-1990s. Their second album Something to Write Home About remains their most widely acclaimed album, and is considered to be one of the quintessential albums of the second-wave emo movement. However, like many early emo bands, The Get Up Kids sought to dissociate themselves with the term, as it was considered dismissive to be seen as an “emo band.”[8] The band departed heavily from their established style with the release of their 2002 album On a Wire, which saw the band take on a much more layered, alternative rock sound. Years later, guitarist Jim Suptic even apologized for having the influence they did on many of the modern third-wave emo bands, commenting that “[t]he punk scene we came out of and the punk scene now are completely different. It’s like glam rock now … If this is the world we helped create, then I apologize.” Due to internal conflicts, the band broke up in 2005. Three years later, the band reunited to support the tenth anniversary re-release of Something to Write Home About, and soon afterward entered the studio to write new material. In early 2010, the band released Simple Science, their first release in six years, followed in 2011 by the full-length There Are Rules. The Get Up Kids Members Rob Pope is also in the band Spoon; Jim Suptic is in the bands: Blackpool Lights, and Radar State; James Dewees is in the band Reggie and the Full Effect; and Matt Pryor performs often as a solo artists, and in the bands: Radar State, and The New Amsterdams.]

In 2015, she released her first LP, “Down In The Dirt”, on VizzTone Label Group, for which she was awarded the 2016 “Sean Costello Rising Star” Blues Blast Music Award. Amanda and her band set Beale Street on fire in the 2017 International Blues Challenge Semi Finals, playing new material slated for her next release.]

10. Julia Holter – “I Shall Love 2”

She studied music at The University of Michigan for four years, graduating with a degree in composition. After seeing Michael Pisaro perform an avant-garde composition in Michigan, she was inspired to study with him at CalArts, where she graduated from another composition program. Holter contributed songs to multiple compilation albums in 2008. In 2010, she began playing with Linda Perhacs’ band and released a CD-R titled Celebration and a collection of live recordings. Her debut studio album, Tragedy, was released in August 2011 on Leaving Records. Inspired by Euripides’ Greek play Hippolytus, the album received generally favorable reviews and was named one of NPR’s “Best Outer Sound Albums of 2011”. Holter released a second album, Ekstasis, in March 2012 on the RVNG Intl. label. The album drew comparisons to works by such artists as Laurie Anderson, Julianna Barwick, Kate Bush, Joanna Newsom, Grouper, and Stereolab, and received many positive reviews. Holter spent three years making the album, whose title comes from the Greek word meaning “outside of oneself.” The music video for album track “Moni Mon Amie”, directed by Yelena Zhelezov, was also released in March. In addition to collaborating with other California-based musicians like Nite Jewel (Ramona Gonzalez), Holter released her third album, Loud City Song, in August 2013 on Domino Records.[4] Unlike her first two albums, which were recorded mostly alone in her bedroom, Holter recorded Loud City Song with an ensemble of musicians. In 2015, Holter released her fourth album Have You in My Wilderness, which became her most successful charting release to date. She also contributed to Ducktails’ fifth studio album, St. Catherine, with her bandmates Chris Votek and Andrew Tholl. Holter collaborated with Jean-Michel Jarre on a song for the second part of the Electronica double album, released on July 18, 2016. In November 2016, she curated her own program during the tenth anniversary edition of Le Guess Who? Festival in Utrecht. This program included performances by Laurel Halo, Josephine Foster, Maya Dunietz, Jessica Moss and other artists. In September 2017, she performed a world premier of her scoring of the 1928 silent French film The Passion of Joan of Arc on September 29 at the FIGat7th in downtown Los Angeles. In September 2018, Holter announced her sixth commercially released album, Aviary, and released the lead single “I Shall Love 2”. She followed it with another single, “Words I Hear”, before the album’s release on October 26.]

It wasn’t long before she began writing songs, recording her first album at age 17 as part of the duo Special Guest. After a more than decade-long hiatus from music, Eades began playing music again after moving to Kansas City and began her solo career in 2015. She has since played dozens of venues in the Kansas City area, won the 2016 HRC Kansas City Battle of the Bands Acoustic Stage, and has started to play more regionally, sharing her heartfelt lyrics, classic melodies, and percussive guitar style with audiences in the Midwest. Influenced by the strong female singer-songwriters she listened to growing up, including Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Jewel, she followed their lead and added her own tinges of twang, angst, and blues. “Punishment” (lyrics)

only as told,
let all and nothing go beyond,
back into

the coffee-clogged drain the red, potted plant
a stranger in a cage
the coroner

could not recognize
her only son
as time leaves your body behind, how will you know?

unholy beach celebrated among
the dirt and scum of
all we won
all we won with patience

Punishment Part One is not Ethan’s first release, he has 25 songs on Soundcloud.

My Oh My! + Cat Dail + Mikal Shapiro + Instant Karma

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / Universal / Dec. 20, 1979
[WMM’s theme]

2. Black Moth Super Rainbow – “Baby’s In The Void”
from: Panic Bloom / Rad Cult Records / May 4, 2018
[American experimental electronic band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They have released 6 albums, 7 EPs, and 4 singles. The project is currently composed of frontman, singer, and songwriter Tobacco whose vocals are altered via a vocoder; keyboardist The Seven Fields of Aphelion, who often performs with a classic monosynth; drummer Iffernaut; guitarist Ryan Graveface; and bassist Pony Driver. Former members include keyboardist Father Hummingbird, who typically recorded with a polysynth, and Power Pill Fist on bass. Black Moth Super Rainbow’s music contains elements of psychedelia, folk, electronica, pop, and rock. Their distinctive sound is characterized by analog electronic instruments including the vocoder, Rhodes piano and Novatron. A Graveface Records insert included inside the album Dandelion Gum describes them as such: “Deep in the woods of western Pennsylvania vocoders hum amongst the flowers and synths bubble under the leaf-strewn ground while flutes whistle in the wind and beats bounce to the soft drizzle of a warm acid rain. As the sun peeks out from between the clouds, the organic aural concoction of Black Moth Super Rainbow starts to glisten above the trees.”]

3. The Brian Jonestown Massacre – “Melodys Actual Echo Chamber”
from: Don’t Get Lost / ‘a’ Recordings / Februry 24, 2017
[Musical project and band led by frontman Anton Newcombe. It was formed in San Francisco in the early 1990s. The group was the subject of the 2004 documentary film Dig!, and have gained media notoriety for their tumultuous working relationships as well as the erratic behaviour of leader Newcombe. The Brian Jonestown Massacre have released seventeen albums, five compilation albums, five live albums, thirteen EPs, sixteen singles as well as two various-artist compilation albums to date. The band was invented by Anton Newcombe in San Francisco in the early 1990s, shortly after moving there from Newport Beach, CA, where he grew up playing in numerous bands. While there are many legends as to how Anton came up with the group’s name, it is undeniably a portmanteau on Brian Jones, the founder and guitarist of the popular English rock band The Rolling Stones, and the infamous mass cult suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. Anton’s reasoning behind this at the time is that there appeared to him to be a lot of overlap between cult leaders and rock stars, but since then the name has taken on a meaning of its own. The Brian Jonestown Massacre music spans multiple genres including psychedelia, electronica, folk music, blues, and experimental music. The group was founded by Newcombe, Matt Hollywood, Ricky Rene Maymi, Patrick Straczek and Travis Threlkel in the early 1990s in San Francisco. The BJM has famously undergone many personnel changes, with Anton Newcombe being the only consistent member. Current members: Joel Gion on tambourine (1994–1999, 2001, 2004–present). Ricky Maymi on guitar (formerly drums & bass) (1990–1993, 2003–present). Rob Campanella on keyboard, organ (and occasionally guitar). (2000–present). Dan Allaire on drums (2002–present. Collin Hegna on bass/guitar. (2004–present). Ryan Van Kriedt on guitar (2015–present).]

5. Wye Oak – “Lifer”
from: The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs / Merge Records / April 6, 2018
[5th studio album from indie rock duo from Baltimore, Maryland, composed of Andy Stack (drums, keyboards, backup vocals) and Jenn Wasner (vocals, guitars and bass). Their sound has been described as “earnest folk-influenced indie rock with touches of noise and dream pop” as well as indie folk. Wasner sings lead vocals and plays electric or acoustic guitar, while Stack plays both drums and keyboards, playing the drums with his feet and right hand, and the bass line with his left hand. The band was formed as Monarch in mid-2006,[1] before changing their name to Wye Oak, a reference to the former state tree of their home state of Maryland. They released their first album, If Children, independently in 2007 and subsequently signed to Merge Records in 2008. The label re-released If Children that year; a second album, The Knot, followed in 2009. Their third album, Civilian, was released in March 2011 by Merge in the US and City Slang in Europe, followed by Shriek in April 2014.[7] In 2016, they released the mini-album Tween, consisting of leftover material recorded between Civilian and Shriek.]

6. The Sea and Cake – “Any Day”
from: Any Day / Thrill Jockey Records / May 11, 2018
[11th album from Chicago based indie rock band formed in the mid 1990s. This is also their first new release in 6 years. The group formed in the mid-1990s from members of The Coctails (Archer Prewitt), Shrimp Boat (Sam Prekop and Eric Claridge), and Tortoise (John McEntire); the group’s name came from a willful reinterpretation (as the result of an accidental miscomprehension) of “The C in Cake”, a song by Gastr del Sol. Starting with 1997’s The Fawn, the group has relied on electronic sound sources, such as drum machines and synthesizers, to color its music, but has retained its distinctive post-jazz combo style. The band has shied away from releasing singles, preferring the album format. Contrary to his multi-instrumentalist role in Tortoise, John McEntire almost exclusively plays drums in The Sea and Cake. Current members include: Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, and John McEntire and each have released solo albums. The cover art of The Sea And Cake’s releases are largely paintings by member Eric Claridge and photographs by Prekop. (Postcards of some of the One Bedroom-era photos were sold on the band’s 2003 tour.) Prewitt has been involved in publishing his own comic books and doing graphic design.]

7. Cat Dail – “Wonder Love”

Rev Gusto, is a Kansas City based, 5-piece garage pop band made up of: Jerry Frederick on vocals & guitar, Shaun Crowley on guitar & trumpet, Sam Frederick on bass and vocals, Peter Beatty on guitar & keyboard, and Quinn Hernandez on drums. Their songs are written by lead singer Jerry Frederick who studied songwriting techniques in England with the Kinks’ Ray Davies. In May 2014 the band was signed to High Dive Records. Their debut full length release, “Burnt Out Friends” was recorded at Element Recording with Joel Nanos, and will be released, July 28, 2015.

Shaun Crowley and Quinn Hernandez joined us to talk. The band has been making music for 5 years now. Last week they hosted a house concert / festival at the Shawnee Manor where all of the band have lived together. Manor Fest featured 12 bands.

Rev Gusto have opened and shared the stage with: Matt & Kim, The Mowgli’s, and The Colourists. Rev Gusto played Sony and Midcoast Takeover showcases at SXSW in 2014.

Jerry Frederick graduated from St. James Academy in Lenexa in 2010, started Rev Gusto in 2010 with brother, Sam, who plays bass, and drummer Quinn Hernandez, a fellow St. James alum. The band regrouped in early 2012, with a different lineup. They added two more St. James alums: Shaun Crowley and Peter Beatty, who play guitar, keyboards and the occasional trumpet.

On the band’s name, Rev Gusto Jerry Frederick explained in an interview, “I used to know a priest who used to encourage people to sing with ‘reverent gusto.’ Eventually it got shortened to ‘rev,’”

The band released a self-titled EP in November 2012

In April of 2014 Rev Gusto put out their first physical release, a 7’ inch single, as part of The Too Much Rock Single Series.

9. Rev Gusto – “Surf City – Mind In A Cage”
from: Burnt Out Friends / High Dive Records / July 28, 2015
[Debut full length album, released on vinyl. Jerry Frederick on Vocals & Guitar, Sam Frederick on bass, Shaun Crowley on lead guitar and keys; Peter Beatty on guitar & back-up vocals; Quinn Hernandez on drums.]

Full disclosure. Mark first met Rev Gusto at the Youth Volunteer Corps 4th Annual KC Metro Youth Battle of the Bands on March 27, 2010. Jerry, Sam and Quinn were in the band with, at that time, Mitch Hecht and Taylor Mc Henry. All of the members of Rev Gusto were in high school at the time. There were 13 bands in the competition. Mark was a judge with Skid Roadie from the 101 The Fox. Rev Gusto won first place! Mark invited Rev Gusto to opportunity to play on the radio. The band came on as guests of Wednesday MidDay Medley later that summer and played live on the show.

There have been a lot of comparisons of Rev Gusto’s sound to that of the sounds of mid to late sixties British invasion bands, including The Kinks. In a Sept. 4, 2013 Interview for Ink KC, Jerry Frederick told music writer Tim Finn, “Ray Davies does this songwriting class every couple of years over in England,” he said “He picks 12 people from all over the world, and for two weeks he teaches you about songwriting. I’m a big Kinks fan, so I entered some of my songs and got accepted.” “He was really encouraging,” Frederick said. “He said he really liked my songs and told me to keep working at it. So I was like, ‘OK, if you say so, Ray Davies.’”

Jerry Frederick also told music writer Tim Finn, “Instead of going out on weekends, I like to sit in my room and listen to all kinds of music,” he said. “I really like that era of music, sunshine pop and old soul.” He was also influenced, he said, by a grandmother who wrote musicals, performed on Broadway and toured Europe. “She loved Cole Porter, so I heard a lot of that growing up, too,” he said.

Bummer on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Bummer is a 3-piece band is made up of: Matt Perrin on vocals & guitar; Mike Gustafson on bass; and Sam Hutchinson on drums. The band is based in Kansas City and members grew up in Olathe, KS. Bummer likes loud rock n’ roll music and that is how they play. Formed in July 2012, Bummer has previously released two EP’s: “Young Ben Franklin” and “Milk.” Their new release, “Spank” was recorded at Westend Recording Studios by Justin Mantooth, who also mixed and co-produced the recordings with the band. “Spank” is being released digitally and on cassette, and also 10″ vinyl from High Dive Records.

Bummer plays a series of record release shows: Thursday, July 16, at recordBar, with Sharp Weapons. Saturday, July 18, Love Garden, in Lawrence, with Gnarly Davidson, and
August 8 at Mills Record Company w/ CHASM. Bummer also plays The Riot Room, July 24, with Coliseum, and Valkyrie.

Bummer’s influences are in hard rock. Heavy. Raw.

We like to keep it primitive,” guitarist/singer Matt Perrin told The Pitch. “It’s all 4/4 (time), sometimes 3/4, maybe some 7/4. But it’s all boneheaded.”

“Spank” was recorded at Westend Recording Studios by Justin Mantooth, who also mixed and co-produced the recordings with the band.

Jeff McCoy signed the band to High Dive Records

“Spank” is being released digitally and on cassette, and 10″ vinyl from High Dive Records.

Bummer has had a couple years, releasing two EPs, In 2014 the band opened for Yuck at The Riot Room, recorded their own version of Gary Numan’s “Cars” playing Middle of The Map Fest and The Center of The City Fest, playing Record Store Day at Mills Record Company, as well as in stores and touring.

Origins of Bummer: The trio of Perrin, bassist Mike Gustafson and drummer Thomas Williams first came together under the name Vestibule. When Williams left the band in summer 2012, Gustafson and Perrin found another drummer, Sam Hunter, and changed the band’s name to Bummer. In April, they released “Young Ben Franklin,” a three-song EP. In July, Hunter left the band and Williams rejoined it. In October, 2012 they released “Milk,” a four-song EP. These were only averrable on digital download. In 2014 the released Milk EP on CD.

Members of Bummer told Tim Finn in an Ink Magazine article from February 18, 2014, about their influences. Mike Gustafson, 21, likes Queens of the Stone Age. “I love stuff that’s heavy & dark,” he said. “I like pop-song structures, stuff that gets stuck in your head. But it has to be heavy.” Matt Perrin, 19, admits he had a Nirvana/Kurt Cobain dependency as a young teen but has since moved on to bands like the Melvins, Unsane, Young Widows and Pissed Jeans. “Those were all turning points,” he said. “It’s all really raw, aggressive stuff.”
