6. Ken Nordine – “Blue”

[Colors is a “word jazz” album by voice-over and recording artist Ken Nordine. It was commissioned by the Fuller Paint Company to write radio advertisement spots, but after a few commercials became popular, it evolved to become an album of 34 songs. Each track personifies a different color or hue. Ken Nordine (born April 13, 1920) is an American voice-over and recording artist, best known for his series of Word Jazz albums. His deep, resonant voice has also been featured in many commercial advertisements and movie trailers. One critic wrote that “you may not know Ken Nordine by name or face, but you’ll almost certainly recognize his voice.” The son of Theresia and Nore S. Nordine, a contractor, Ken Nordine was born in Cherokee, Iowa. The family later moved to Chicago, where he attended Lane Technical College Prep High School and the University of Chicago. He has three sons with his wife Beryl, whom he married in 1945. During the 1940s, he was heard on The World’s Great Novels and other radio programs broadcast from Chicago. One of which, Honore de Balzac’s short story “Une passion dans le désert”, was recorded for the 1955 album Passion in the Desert. In 1955 he provided the voiceover on Billy Vaughn’s version of Shifting Whispering Sands, which peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. He subsequently attracted wider attention when he recorded the aural vignettes on Word Jazz (Dot, 1957). Love Words, Son of Word Jazz (Dot, 1958) and his other albums in this vein feature Nordine’s narration over cool jazz by the Fred Katz Group featuring Chico Hamilton recording under an alias. Nordine began performing and recording such albums at the peak of the beat era and was associated with the poetry-and-jazz movement. However, it has been observed that some of Nordine’s writings “are more akin to Franz Kafka or Edgar Allan Poe” than to the beats. Many of his word jazz tracks feature critiques of societal norms. Some are lightweight and humorous, while others reveal dark, paranoid undercurrents and bizarre, dream-like scenarios. Nordine’s DVD, The Eye Is Never Filled, (2005) provides a flow of abstract visuals to accompany the audio tracks. In 1990 Nordine was approached by Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead to be the anchor for their New Year’s Eve radio broadcast from Oakland, California.[6] For the broadcast he recorded some improvisations with Garcia, drummer Mickey Hart and Egyptian musician Hamza El-Din. This subsequently lead to an album Devout Jazz, released on the Grateful Dead’s own label in 1991 and Upper Limbo in 1993[7] and appearances with the band such as their show at Rosemont, Illinois in March 1993.]

7. Tunde Olaniran – “Symbol”

[Second full length album from Flint Michigan based Tunde Olaniran. In 2014, Olaniran released his first EP titled Yung Archetype (see: Jungian archetypes). Olaniran released his first full-length album in 2015 titled Transgressor. NPR’s Stephen Thompson notes, Olaniran, “presides over a bighearted sound and style that revolve around spirited statements of affirmation, a sprawling artistic palette and the pursuit of boldness in every sense of the word… It all adds up to a finely calibrated mix of purpose and playfulness, executed to stylish perfection.”]

Spinning Tree Theatre introduces Kansas City to The Nance

Spinning Tree Theatre proudly continues Season 8 November 2-18 with the Kansas City premiere of Douglas Carter Beane’s The Nance, the 2013 Lincoln Center-produced Broadway play featuring music by Glen Kelly.

Beane is also the writer of “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar,” As Bees in Honey Drown and The Little Dog Laughed.

The Nance tells the story of burlesque’s stereotypically camp character and master of comic double entendre, almost always played by a straight man (so to speak). Mayor LaGuardia wants to clean up the city before the 1937 World’s Fair, and one of his targets is burlesque. What happens when our nance is gay…and has fallen in love? The Nance – equal parts drama and comedy – includes generous splashes of outrageous song-and-dance burlesque sketches.

Spinning Tree Managing Director Andrew Grayman-Parkhurst: “The Nance suits our aesthetic beautifully: wildly entertaining while meaningful. We believe this will be an introduction to most of our patrons about the comic representation of gay men in burlesque. It’s a unique opportunity to step back in time with a highly theatrical cast of characters.”

Artistic Director Michael Grayman-Parkhurst and Nicole Marie Green co-direct, continuing their collaboration from 2017’s Casa Valentina.

Perkins was featured in 2017’s Casa Valentina; Personett in 2016’s Nine. The rest of the cast are making their Spinning Tree debuts.

8. The Get Up Kids – “Better This Way”

On March 29, 2018, Polyvinyl Records announced on their Instagram account that they had signed the band and that new music will be coming soon. The Get Up Kids are an American rock band from Kansas City, Missouri. Formed in 1995, the band was a major player in the mid-1990s emo scene, otherwise known as the “second wave” of emo music. As they gained prominence, they began touring with bands such as Green Day and Weezer before becoming headliners themselves, eventually embarking on international tours of Japan and Europe. They founded Heroes & Villains Records, an imprint of the successful indie rock label Vagrant Records. While the imprint was started to release albums by The Get Up Kids, it served as a launching pad for several side-projects such as The New Amsterdams and Reggie and the Full Effect. The Get Up Kids were viewed throughout their existence as a prototypical emo band, having been major players in the Midwest emo movement of the mid-1990s. Their second album Something to Write Home About remains their most widely acclaimed album, and is considered to be one of the quintessential albums of the second-wave emo movement. However, like many early emo bands, The Get Up Kids sought to dissociate themselves with the term, as it was considered dismissive to be seen as an “emo band.”[8] The band departed heavily from their established style with the release of their 2002 album On a Wire, which saw the band take on a much more layered, alternative rock sound. Years later, guitarist Jim Suptic even apologized for having the influence they did on many of the modern third-wave emo bands, commenting that “[t]he punk scene we came out of and the punk scene now are completely different. It’s like glam rock now … If this is the world we helped create, then I apologize.” Due to internal conflicts, the band broke up in 2005. Three years later, the band reunited to support the tenth anniversary re-release of Something to Write Home About, and soon afterward entered the studio to write new material. In early 2010, the band released Simple Science, their first release in six years, followed in 2011 by the full-length There Are Rules. The Get Up Kids Members Rob Pope is also in the band Spoon; Jim Suptic is in the bands: Blackpool Lights, and Radar State; James Dewees is in the band Reggie and the Full Effect; and Matt Pryor performs often as a solo artists, and in the bands: Radar State, and The New Amsterdams.]

9. Amanda Fish – “Free”
from: Free / VizzTone / September 14, 2018
[Amanda Fish began as a singer songwriter in late 2012, refining her original material as a solo act for 2 years before she formed her band in early 2014, a Roots Rock and Soul project featuring Amanda’s signature ‘from-the-gut’ vocals locked into a sturdy groove. In 2015, she released her first LP, “Down In The Dirt”, on VizzTone Label Group, for which she was awarded the 2016 “Sean Costello Rising Star” Blues Blast Music Award. Amanda and her band set Beale Street on fire in the 2017 International Blues Challenge Semi Finals, playing new material slated for her next release.]

10. Julia Holter – “I Shall Love 2”

[Julia Shammas Holter was born December 18, 1984, in Holter was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At age six her family moved to Los Angeles, where she later attended the Alexander Hamilton High School. She studied music at The University of Michigan for four years, graduating with a degree in composition. After seeing Michael Pisaro perform an avant-garde composition in Michigan, she was inspired to study with him at CalArts, where she graduated from another composition program. Holter contributed songs to multiple compilation albums in 2008. In 2010, she began playing with Linda Perhacs’ band and released a CD-R titled Celebration and a collection of live recordings. Her debut studio album, Tragedy, was released in August 2011 on Leaving Records. Inspired by Euripides’ Greek play Hippolytus, the album received generally favorable reviews and was named one of NPR’s “Best Outer Sound Albums of 2011”. Holter released a second album, Ekstasis, in March 2012 on the RVNG Intl. label. The album drew comparisons to works by such artists as Laurie Anderson, Julianna Barwick, Kate Bush, Joanna Newsom, Grouper, and Stereolab, and received many positive reviews. Holter spent three years making the album, whose title comes from the Greek word meaning “outside of oneself.” The music video for album track “Moni Mon Amie”, directed by Yelena Zhelezov, was also released in March. In addition to collaborating with other California-based musicians like Nite Jewel (Ramona Gonzalez), Holter released her third album, Loud City Song, in August 2013 on Domino Records.[4] Unlike her first two albums, which were recorded mostly alone in her bedroom, Holter recorded Loud City Song with an ensemble of musicians. In 2015, Holter released her fourth album Have You in My Wilderness, which became her most successful charting release to date. She also contributed to Ducktails’ fifth studio album, St. Catherine, with her bandmates Chris Votek and Andrew Tholl. Holter collaborated with Jean-Michel Jarre on a song for the second part of the Electronica double album, released on July 18, 2016. In November 2016, she curated her own program during the tenth anniversary edition of Le Guess Who? Festival in Utrecht. This program included performances by Laurel Halo, Josephine Foster, Maya Dunietz, Jessica Moss and other artists. In September 2017, she performed a world premier of her scoring of the 1928 silent French film The Passion of Joan of Arc on September 29 at the FIGat7th in downtown Los Angeles. In September 2018, Holter announced her sixth commercially released album, Aviary, and released the lead single “I Shall Love 2”. She followed it with another single, “Words I Hear”, before the album’s release on October 26.]

[Indie synthpop from Kansas City based, 4-piece band that includes: Rachel Mallin on lead vocals & guitar, Justin Walker on bass, Austin Edmisten on drums & back-up vocals. “It Isn’t Love” the latest single from Rachel Mallin & the Wild Type. Mallin wrote, recorded and produced her first album, The Persistence of Vision, in 2014 — a solo effort that spoke to her synthpop sensibilities and landed her on Kansas City radio. That same year, she left the University of Missouri to pursue a music career, and enlisted bassist Justin Walker and drummer Austin Edmisten to form The Wild Type. By mid-2016, the act — with keyboardist Jesse Bartmess and former guitarist Matt Kosinski — released its debut EP, Degenerate Matters, recorded, produced, and mastered by Joel Nanos at Element Recording Studios. Musical Arrangements written and performed by Rachel Mallin, Justin Walker, Austin Edmisten, Jesse Bartmess, and Matt Kosinski. Lyrics written by Rachel Mallin. A set pf three releases that began with the May 2015 release, Part I. The Dead, and continued with the November 2015 release, Part II. The Wise. HighWesthus is a freelance multimedia artist living in Kansas City. He graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2012 with a BFA in Animation. He is one of four owners of Strange Paper Studio, based in Kansas City. HighWesthus specializes in illustration, animation, graphic design, video editing, sound editing, music producing, writing and storytelling.]

Erin Eades is a singer-songwriter in Kansas City, MO. Originally from the mountain state of West Virginia, Eades began making music at the age of 12, when out of boredom her father handed her a 1950’s Gibson that had been stored away, waiting for someone to play. It wasn’t long before she began writing songs, recording her first album at age 17 as part of the duo Special Guest. After a more than decade-long hiatus from music, Eades began playing music again after moving to Kansas City and began her solo career in 2015. She has since played dozens of venues in the Kansas City area, won the 2016 HRC Kansas City Battle of the Bands Acoustic Stage, and has started to play more regionally, sharing her heartfelt lyrics, classic melodies, and percussive guitar style with audiences in the Midwest. Her music is genuine, and shares bits of her story, drawing from experiences that many find relatable. Influenced by the strong female singer-songwriters she listened to growing up, including Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Jewel, she followed their lead and added her own tinges of twang, angst, and blues. [DeVotchKa is a four-piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble. They take their name from the Russian word devochka (девочка), meaning “girl”. Based in Denver, Colorado, the quartet is made up of Nick Urata, who sings and plays theremin, guitar, bouzouki, piano, and trumpet; Tom Hagerman, who plays violin, accordion, and piano; Jeanie Schroder, who sings and plays sousaphone, double bass, and flute; and Shawn King, who plays percussion and trumpet.]

[Frank Skinner was a composer & arranger born in Meredosia, Illinois on Dec. 31, 1897. He died in Beverly Hills, California, Oct. 9, 1968. A graduate of the Chicago Musical College (now the Chicago Conservatory of Music), 16-year-old Frank found employment in vaudeville and began playing in local areas with his brother Carl on drums billed as the Skinner Brothers dance band. He began writing and arranging music for dance bands in New York, from 1925 to 1935, arranging 2000 popular songs for Robbins Publishing. After a short period at MGM, working on musical settings for The Great Ziegfeld (1936), Skinner was hired by Universal Studios. Over the course of his 30 years there, he composed music for more than 200 films earning five Academy Award nominations (1938–43). His distinctive approach to scoring horror films, such as Son of Frankenstein (1939) and The Wolf Man (1941), has been characterized as a ‘passion for chromatic lines … mirrored contours … [and] restrained, yet ominously mythical orchestrations’ (Marcello). He gained new recognition in the 1950s for his lush romantic scores, including those for such Douglas Sirk films as Magnificent Obsession (1954) and Written on the Wind (1956). Despite many changes in the film industry, his book Underscore (1950) has survived as an excellent introduction to film music composition. The Wolf Man is a 1941 American drama horror film written by Curt Siodmak and produced and directed by George Waggner. The film stars Lon Chaney, Jr. as a werewolf named “The Wolf Man” and features Claude Rains, Evelyn Ankers, Ralph Bellamy, Patric Knowles, Béla Lugosi, and Maria Ouspenskaya in supporting roles. The title character has had a great deal of influence on Hollywood’s depictions of the legend of the werewolf. The film is the second Universal Pictures werewolf film, preceded six years earlier by the less commercially successful Werewolf of London (1935). Lon Chaney, Jr. would reprise his classic role as “The Wolf Man” in four sequels, beginning with Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man in 1943.]

[Sonic Youth was based in New York City, formed in 1981. Founding members Thurston Moore (guitar, vocals), Kim Gordon (bass, vocals, guitar) and Lee Ranaldo (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while Steve Shelley (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, and rounded out the core line-up. Sonic Youth emerged from the experimental no wave art and music scene in New York before evolving into a more conventional rock band and becoming the most prominent of the American noise rock groups. Sonic Youth have been praised for having “redefined what rock guitar could do” using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings and preparing guitars with objects like drum sticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments’ timbre. The band is considered to be a pivotal influence on the alternative and indie rock movements. After gaining a large underground following and critical praise through releases with SST Records in the late 1980s, the band experienced mainstream success throughout the 1990s and 2000s after signing to major label DGC in 1990 and headlining the 1995 Lollapalooza festival. In 2011, Ranaldo announced that the band was “ending for a while” following the separation of married couple Gordon and Moore. Thurston Moore updated and clarified the position in May 2014: “Sonic Youth is on hiatus. The band is a democracy of sorts, and as long as Kim and I are working out our situation, the band can’t really function reasonably.” Gordon refers several times in her 2015 autobiography Girl in a Band to the band having “split up”. Dirty is the seventh studio album by American alternative rock band Sonic Youth. It was released on July 21, 1992 by record label DGC. The band recorded and produced the album with Butch Vig in early 1992 at the Magic Shop studios. The sound on Dirty was inspired by the grunge scene of the time, and was described as avant-rock. Some songs on the album mark the first appearance of three guitars in Sonic Youth songs. The album was remastered and released on quadruple vinyl and double CD in 2003. The album spawned four singles. The first single was “100%”; it charted well, but was not the crossover hit the label anticipated. The next was “Youth Against Fascism”, which did not chart well. The last two were “Sugar Kane” and “Drunken Butterfly”, released in 1993. “Sugar Kane” did better commercially than “Youth Against Fascism”. The album sold exceptionally well, reaching No. 6 in the UK Albums Chart (their highest charting album in the UK) and No. 83 in the US. In support of the album, the band embarked on the “Pretty Fucking Dirty” tour of 1992 and 1993, where most of Dirty was played. In late 1992, they toured North America, and in early 1993, they toured New Zealand and Australia.]

5. St. Vincent – “Fear The Future (Piano Version)”

[“MassEducation” a brand new acoustic rendition of her previous album Masseduction, Clark’s fifth studio album, was released in October 2017. Pitchfork writes: “Recorded over two days at Manhattan’s Reservoir Studios studios, MassEducation strips its hypersexual, neon-clad predecessor for parts, exposing its songs as tales of longing and nostalgia. Clark seemed to always know that her record contained two lives: “This needs to be something people can really dance to,” she said of a song on her last album, “until they listen to the words and then they’re crying.” Hiding melancholy behind pop production is nothing new, but on an album so saturated with sadness, these pared-down renderings give Clark a chance to indulge in their underlying sentiments.” Anne Erin Clark was born September 28, 1982, in Tulsa Oklahoma. She is known professionally as St. Vincent, a musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. After studying at Berklee College of Music for three years, she began her music career as a member of The Polyphonic Spree. Clark was also a member of Sufjan Stevens’s touring band before forming her own band in 2006. St. Vincent’s work has received consistent praise for its distinct musical style, which blends soft rock, experimental rock, electropop, and jazz influences. Her debut album was Marry Me (2007), followed by Actor (2009), Strange Mercy (2011), St. Vincent (2014), and Masseduction (2017). She released a collaborative album with David Byrne in 2012 titled Love This Giant. Clark also contributed backing vocals for Swans on their 2014 album, To Be Kind. Her fourth solo album, the eponymous St. Vincent, was named album of the year by The Guardian, Entertainment Weekly, NME, and Slant Magazine, as well as second best album of the year by Time magazine. The album won her a Grammy for Best Alternative Album, her first Grammy award. She was the first solo female performer in 20 years to win a Grammy in that category.]

3. Ed Wood – “Plan 9 From Outer Space (Trailer)”

[Plan 9 from Outer Space (originally titled Grave Robbers from Outer Space) is a 1959 American B & W science fiction horror film. The film was written, produced, directed and edited by Ed Wood, and stars Gregory Walcott, Mona McKinnon, Tor Johnson, Vampira and posthumously bills Bela Lugosi. Shortly after Lugosi’s death the story and screenplay for Grave Robbers from Outer Space were written and finalized, with Wood planning to use the unconnected, unrelated footage of Lugosi as a means of putting a credit for him on the picture. Wood used the Lugosi footage as a means of attracting actors to the picture, by saying to them that he was making “Bela Lugosi’s last movie.” Though Wood’s actions were driven in part by the desire to give his film a ‘star name’ and attract horror fans, the Lugosi cameo was also meant as a loving tribute and farewell to the actor, who had become fast friends with Wood in the last three years of Lugosi’s life. Wood hired his wife’s chiropractor, Tom Mason, as a stand-in for Lugosi, even though Mason was taller than Lugosi and bore no resemblance to him, making him one of the earliest “fake Shemps”. Narration from Criswell was also employed in an attempt to better link Lugosi’s footage with the rest of Plan 9. Every last scrap of material Wood had of Lugosi was utilized in the theatrical cut of the film, including what are minor sprocket discolorations, film trims that would in a normal film be discarded as unusable. Cuts of the film on VHS during the 80s and 90s, the vast majority unauthorized bootleg dupes, varied drastically not only in quality but also in the amount of Lugosi material retained.]

We have the grand pleasure of welcoming back to our radio show the star of “Plan 9 From Outer Space” his last film and his 108th film, from his 5 decades as an actor.

Béla Lugosi – Thanks for being with us again on Wednesday MidDay Medley!

Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskó (Oct. 20, 1882 – Aug 16, 1956), known as Bela Lugosi, a Hungarian-American actor. He’d been playing small parts in his native Hungary before making his first film in 1917, but left after the failed Hungarian Revolution. In 1927, he appeared as Count Dracula in a Broadway adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel. He later appeared in the classic 1931 film Dracula by Universal Pictures. He was often paired with Boris Karloff, who was able to demand top billing. To his frustration, Lugosi was increasingly restricted to minor parts, kept employed by the studio principally for the sake of his name on the posters. Among his pairings with Karloff, only in The Black Cat (1934), The Raven (1935), and Son of Frankenstein (1939) did he perform major roles again. Lugosi had been receiving regular medication for sciatic neuritis, and he became addicted to morphine and methadone. This drug dependence was noted by producers, and the offers eventually dwindled down to a few parts in Ed Wood’s low-budget movies, most notably Plan 9 from Outer Space. Lugosi was married five times, and had one son, Bela George Lugosi. Lugosi was buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.

Lugosi was also the subject of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”, the first single by the English band Bauhaus. Released in August 1979, it is often considered to be the first gothic rock record.

Andy Warhol’s 1963 silkscreen The Kiss depicts Lugosi from Dracula about to bite into the neck of co-star Helen Chandler, who played Mina Harker. A copy sold for $798,000 at Christie’s in May 2000.

7. The Velvet Underground– “Black Angel’s Death Song (Album Version-Stereo)”

[The Velvet Underground & Nico is the debut album by American rock band the Velvet Underground and vocal collaborator Nico, released in March 1967 by Verve Records. Recorded in 1966 during Andy Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia event tour, The Velvet Underground & Nico would gain attention for its experimental performance sensibilities, as well as the focus on controversial subject matter expressed in many of its songs including drug abuse, prostitution, sadism and masochism and sexual deviancy. In 1982, musician Brian Eno famously stated that while The Velvet Underground & Nico initially only sold 30,000 copies, “everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band.” Though it was a commercial failure upon release and was almost completely ignored by critics at the time, the record has since become one of the most influential and critically acclaimed rock albums in history, appearing at number thirteen on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time as well as being added to the 2006 National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress. “I’ll Be Your Mirror” is a song by The Velvet Underground. It appeared on their 1967 debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico. It also surfaced as a single a year earlier with “All Tomorrow’s Parties” in 1966. Lou Reed wrote the song for Nico, who provides lead vocals. Inspiration for the song apparently came about after Nico approached Reed after a show in 1965 saying, “Oh Lou, I’ll be your mirror.” The song was a favorite of Reed’s and The Velvet Underground & Nico engineer, Norman Dolph.]

8. Laurie Anderson – “Three Ghosts”

[The complete soundtrack recording of Laurie Anderson’s film, Heart of a Dog. Anderson was commissioned by the European TV network Arte to create a feature film — her first in 30 years. Her response was a personal essay entitled Heart of a Dog, a work encompassing joy and heartbreak and remembering and forgetting, at the heart of which is a lament for her late beloved piano-playing and finger-painting dog Lolabelle. Scenes range from realistic footage from the animal’s life to imagined scenes of Lolabelle’s passage through the bardo. It also includes other reflections on life and death including Anderson’s experiences in life in downtown New York after 9/11. The Nonesuch album is the full audio recording of the film, including all music and spoken text. Heart of a Dog has been shown at the Telluride, Venice, and Toronto Film Festivals to critical praise, with the New York Times calling it a “philosophically astute, emotionally charged meditation on death, love, art and dogs.” The movie was screened at the New York Film Festival on October 8, 2015, before opening theatrically at New York’s Film Forum October 21, 2015. It was also shown on HBO. ]

Nina Simone was a singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist who worked in a broad range of musical styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Born in North Carolina, the sixth child of a preacher, Simone aspired to be a concert pianist. With the help of the few supporters in her hometown of Tryon, North Carolina, she enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in NYC. Simone recorded more than 40 albums.”]

Béla Lugosi’s last film, “Plan 9 From Outer Space” featured Maila Nurmi (Dec. 11, 1922 – Jan. 10, 2008) a Finnish-American actress born in Petsamo, Finland, who created the campy character Vampira. She portrayed Vampira as TV’s first horror host. She is also billed as Vampira in the 1959 movie The Beat Generation where she plays a beatnik poet.

Bela Lugosi also starred in, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, a 1948 American horror comedy film directed by Charles Barton starring the comedy team of Abbott and Costello. The picture is the first of several films where the comedy duo meets classic characters from Universal’s horror film stable. In this film, they encounter Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi), Frankenstein’s monster (Glenn Strange), and the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney, Jr.), while subsequent films pair the duo with the Mummy, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and the Invisible Man. On a TV special in the early 1950s, the two did a sketch where they interacted with the latest original Universal Studios monster being promoted at the time, the Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954). The film is considered the swan song for the “Big Three” Universal horror monsters – Count Dracula, the Wolf Man and Frankenstein’s monster, none of whom had appeared in a Universal film since 1945’s House of Dracula.

Bela Lugosi (1882–1956), best known for the original screen portrayal of Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1931, was in a large number of movies during the course of his career.

In Tim Burton’s Ed Wood, Lugosi is portrayed by Martin Landau, who received the 1994 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the performance. According to Bela G. Lugosi (his son), Forrest Ackerman, Dolores Fuller and Richard Sheffield, the film’s portrayal of Lugosi is inaccurate: In real life, he never used profanity, owned small dogs, or slept in coffins. And contrary to this film, Bela did not struggle performing on The Red Skelton Show.

Lugosi was married five times, and had one son, Bela George Lugosi.
The Ellis Island Immigration Museum in NYC features a live 30-minute play that focuses on Lugosi’s illegal entry into the USA and then his arrival at Ellis Island to enter legally.

11. Kenneth Alwyn — “The Bride of Frankenstein (Main Title)”

[The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn. The Bride of Frankenstein is a 1935 horror film, sequel to Universal Pictures’ 1931 hit Frankenstein directed by James Whale with Boris Karloff as The Monster, Elsa Lanchester in the dual role of his mate and Mary Shelley, Colin Clive as Henry Frankenstein, and Ernest Thesiger as Doctor Septimus Pretorius. The film is rooted in a subplot of the original Mary Shelley novel, Frankenstein (1818). In the film, a chastened Henry Frankenstein abandons his plans to create life, only to be tempted and finally coerced by the Monster, encouraged by Henry’s old mentor Dr. Pretorius, into constructing a mate for him. Bride of Frankenstein was released to critical and popular acclaim, although it encountered difficulties with some state and national censorship boards. Since its release the film’s reputation has grown, and it has been hailed as Whale’s masterpiece. Director James Whale met Franz Waxman at a party and asked him to score the picture. “Nothing will be resolved in this picture except the end destruction scene. Would you write an unresolved score for it?” asked Whale. Waxman created three distinctive themes: one for the Monster; one for the Bride; and one for Pretorius. The score closes, at Whale’s suggestion, with a powerful dissonant chord, intended to convey the idea that the on-screen explosion was so powerful that the theater where the film was being screened was affected by it. Constantin Bakaleinikoff conducted 22 musicians to record the score in a single nine-hour session.]

12. Bobby “Boris” Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers — “Monster Mash”

[“Monster Mash” is a 1962 novelty song and the best-known song by Bobby “Boris” Pickett. The song was released as a single on Gary S. Paxton’s Garpax Records label in August 1962 along with a full-length LP called The Original Monster Mash, which contained several other monster-themed tunes. The “Monster Mash” single was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on October 20–27 of that year, just before Halloween. It has been a perennial holiday favorite ever since. Pickett was an aspiring actor who sang with a band called the Cordials at night while going to auditions during the day. One night, while performing with his band, Pickett did a monologue in imitation of horror movie actor Boris Karloff while performing the Diamonds’ “Little Darlin'”. The audience loved it, and fellow band member Lenny Capizzi encouraged Pickett to do more with the Karloff imitation. Pickett and Capizzi composed “Monster Mash” and recorded it with Gary S. Paxton, pianist Leon Russell, Johnny MacRae, Rickie Page, and Terry Berg, credited as “The Crypt-Kickers”. (Mel Taylor, drummer for the Ventures, is sometimes credited with playing on the record as well, while Russell, who arrived late for the session, appears on the single’s B-side, “Monster Mash Party”.) The song was partially inspired by Paxton’s earlier novelty hit “Alley Oop”, as well as by the Mashed Potato dance craze of the era. A variation on the Mashed Potato was danced to “Monster Mash”, in which the footwork was the same but Frankenstein-style monster gestures were made with the arms and hands. The song is narrated by a mad scientist whose monster, late one evening, rises from his slab to perform a new dance. The dance becomes “the hit of the land” when the scientist throws a party for other monsters. The producers came up with several low-budget but effective sound effects for the recording. For example, the sound of a coffin opening was imitated by a rusty nail being pulled out of a board. The sound of a cauldron bubbling was actually water being bubbled through a straw, and the chains rattling were simply chains being dropped on a tile floor. In addition to narrating the song in the Karloff voice, Pickett also impersonated fellow horror film actor Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula with the line, “Whatever happened to my Transylvania Twist?” The song was re-released several times and appeared in the U.S. Billboard charts on two occasions after the original release: August 1970 and May 1973. The BBC had banned the record from airplay in 1962 on the grounds that the song was “too morbid”. It was re-released in the United Kingdom in 1973, where it peaked at #3 in early October. In the U.S. the record re-entered the Hot 100 on May 5, 1973, peaking at #10 on August 11. On the September 15, 1973 edition of American Top 40, Casey Kasem mistakenly said that the record had accumulated 40 weeks on the Hot 100, which then would have been the all-time record, only for a listener to inform Kasem later that the record’s three weeks on the Hot 100 in 1970 had been included in the 1973 run, thus reducing the total to 37 weeks. The record has not charted on the Hot 100 since then. To celebrate the 1973 release, Bobby and the Crypt-Kickers toured Dallas and St. Louis around the 1973 Halloween holiday. On this tour, the Crypt-Kickers were composed of Brian Ray (now guitarist with Paul McCartney), drummer Brian Englund, keyboardist Don Chambers, singer Jean Ray, and others. “Monster Mash” re-entered the British charts again on November 2, 2008 at #60. “Monsters’ Holiday”, a Christmas-themed follow up, was recorded by Pickett and released in December 1962, peaking at #30 on the Billboard chart. The tune was penned by the renowned novelty song composer Paul Harrison. In 1985, with American culture experiencing a growing awareness of rap music, Pickett released “Monster Rap”, which describes the mad scientist’s frustration at being unable to teach the dancing monster from “Monster Mash” how to talk. The problem is solved when he teaches the monster to rap. A movie musical based on the song starring Pickett was released in 1995. During the 2004 presidential election, Pickett turned the song into a campaign video and retitled it “Monster Slash,” with lyrics by environmental campaigner Peter Altman, which critiqued President George W. Bush’s environmental policies. The “Transylvania Twist,” mentioned in the lyrics of “Monster Mash,” was written into a full song for the film Spookley the Square Pumpkin (Pickett narrated) and performed by The Honeydoos, a Pointer Sisters-like girl group of singing melons. Joining us now, in our 90.1 FM Radio studios is a giant star of stage & screen, an english actor who had already acted in eighty films before being found by director James Whale and cast in his 81st role as Frankenstein’s monster in the classic 1931 film Frankenstein. The role propelled him to stardom. Boris Karloff went on star in Bride of Frankenstein in 1935, and Son of Frankenstein in 1939. He also appeared as Imhotep in The Mummy in 1932.

Boris Karloff was born William Henry Pratt on November 23, 1887, at 36 Forest Hill Road, Camberwell, Surrey (now London), England, but Pratt stated that he was born in nearby Dulwich. His parents were Edward John Pratt, Jr. and Eliza Sarah Millard. His brother, Sir John Thomas Pratt, was a British diplomat. His mother’s maternal aunt was Anna Leonowens, whose tales about life in the royal court of Siam (now Thailand) were the basis of the musical The King and I. Pratt was bow-legged, had a lisp, and stuttered as a young boy. He conquered his stutter, but not his lisp, which was noticeable throughout his career in the film industry.

Pratt spent his childhood years in Enfield, in the County of Middlesex. He was the youngest of nine children, and following his mother’s death was brought up by his elder siblings. He received his early education at Enfield Grammar School, and later at the private schools of Uppingham School and Merchant Taylors’ School. After this, he attended King’s College London where he took studies aimed at a career with the British Government’s Consular Service. However, in 1909, he left university without graduating and drifted, departing England for Canada, where he worked as a farm labourer and did various odd itinerant jobs until happening upon acting.

Karloff acted in eighty movies before being found by James Whale and cast in his eighty-first movie, Frankenstein. Karloff’s role as Frankenstein’s monster in Frankenstein propelled him to stardom. The bulky costume with four-inch platform boots made it an arduous role but the costume and extensive makeup produced the classic image.
The costume was a job in itself for Karloff with the shoes weighing 11 pounds each. Universal Studios was quick to acquire ownership of the copyright to the makeup format for the Frankenstein monster that Jack P. Pierce had designed. Karloff was soon cast as Imhotep who is revived in The Mummy, a mute butler in The Old Dark House (with Charles Laughton) and the starring role in The Mask of Fu Manchu, which were all released within a few months of each other in late 1932. These films confirmed Karloff’s stardom. 5′ 11″, brown-eyed Karloff still played roles in other genres besides horror, such as a religious World War I soldier in the John Ford epic The Lost Patrol (1934).

Horror, however, had now become Karloff’s primary genre, and he gave a string of lauded performances in Universal’s horror films, including several with Bela Lugosi, his main rival as heir to Lon Chaney’s status as the leading horror film star. While the long-standing, creative partnership between Karloff and Lugosi never led to a close friendship, it produced some of the actors’ most revered and enduring productions, beginning with The Black Cat (1934) and continuing with Gift of Gab (1934), The Raven (1935) and The Invisible Ray (1936). Karloff reprised the role of Frankenstein’s monster in two further films, Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Son of Frankenstein (1939), the latter also featuring Lugosi, with Basil Rathbone replacing Colin Clive as the scientist playing god. Rathbone appeared with Karloff again in Tower of London (1939) as the murderous henchman of King Richard III. Karloff revisited the Frankenstein mythos in several later films as well, taking the starring role of the villainous Dr. Niemann in House of Frankenstein (1944), in which the monster was played by Glenn Strange. He reprised the role of the “mad scientist” in 1958’s Frankenstein 1970 as Baron Victor von Frankenstein II, the grandson of the original creator. The finale reveals that the crippled Baron has given his own face (i.e., Karloff’s) to the monster.

Initially associated with the English punk rock scene, the band rapidly evolved to create “a form of post-punk discord full of daring rhythmic and sonic experimentation”. The Times cited Siouxsie and the Banshees as “one of the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of the post-punk era.” With the release of Juju the group became an important influence on the emerging gothic rock scene. They disbanded in 1996, with Siouxsie and drummer Budgie continuing to record music as The Creatures, a 2nd band they’d formed in the early 1980s. In 2004, Siouxsie began a solo career.]

The 1940s and 1950s – An enthusiastic performer, he returned to the Broadway stage in the original production of Arsenic and Old Lace in 1941, in which he played a homicidal gangster enraged to be frequently mistaken for Karloff. Frank Capra cast Raymond Massey in the 1944 film, which was shot in 1941, while Karloff was still appearing in the role on Broadway (the play’s producers allowed the film to be made under the condition that it not be released until the play closed). He reprised the role on television in the anthology series The Best of Broadway (1955), and with Tony Randall and Tom Bosley in a 1962 production on the Hallmark Hall of Fame.
In 1944, he underwent a spinal operation to relieve his chronic arthritic condition.

His connection with Bela Lugosi continued with Black Friday (1940), You’ll Find Out (also 1940) and The Body Snatcher (1945), the first of three films with RKO produced by Val Lewton. Isle of the Dead (also 1945) and Bedlam (1946) completed the trio.

He married 5 times and had 1 daughter Sara Karloff, by his 4th wife. One marriage was in 1946 right after his divorce. At the time of his daughter’s birth, he was filming Son of Frankenstein and reportedly rushed from the film set to the hospital while still in makeup.

For his contribution to film and television, Boris Karloff was awarded two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, at 1737 Vine Street for motion pictures, and 6664 Hollywood Boulevard for television. Karloff was featured by the U.S. Postal Service as Frankenstein’s Monster and the Mummy in its series “Classic Monster Movie Stamps” issued in September 1997. In 1998, an English Heritage blue plaque was unveiled in his hometown in London. The British film magazine Empire in 2016 ranked Karloff’s portrayal as Frankenstein’s monster the sixth-greatest horror movie character of all time.

15. Thom Yorke – “Voiceless Terror”

[Suspiria is a 2018 supernatural horror film directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by David Kajganich, based on the 1977 film directed by Dario Argento. Radiohead singer Thom Yorke composed the score, his first feature film soundtrack. It features the London Contemporary Orchestra and Choir and Yorke’s son Noah on drums. He initially refused the offer, but accepted after months of requests from Guadagnino. Much of the score was completed prior to the film shoot, which afforded Guadagnino the opportunity to play the musical score on set during filming. Yorke cited inspiration from the 1982 Blade Runner soundtrack, musique concrète artists such as Pierre Henry, modern electronic artists such as James Holden, and music from the film’s 1977 Berlin setting, such as krautrock. He said: “There’s a way of repeating in music that can hypnotise. I kept thinking to myself that it’s a form of making spells. So when I was working in my studio I was making spells. I know it sounds really stupid, but that’s how I was thinking about it.” Suspiria stars Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton in a triple role, Mia Goth, Angela Winkler, Ingrid Caven, Elena Fokina, Sylvie Testud, Renée Soutendijk, Christine LeBoutte, Fabrizia Sacchi, Małgosia Bela, Jessica Harper, and Chloë Grace Moretz. Harper, the lead in the original film, appears in a different role. Set in 1977 Berlin, the plot follows a young American dancer who enrolls at a prestigious dance academy controlled by a coven of witches. Unlike in Argento’s original film which utilized exaggerated color, Guadagnino conceived Suspiria as visually “winter-ish” and bleak, absent of any primary colors. The film also incorporates stylized dance sequences choreographed by Damien Jalet, which factor significantly in its representation of witchcraft. Concurrent to its plot surrounding the coven is a secondary plot involving a psychotherapist who lost his wife under the Nazi regime. Principal photography for Suspiria took place in late 2016 and early 2017 in Varese and Berlin. The score was composed by Radiohead singer Thom Yorke, who completed much of the arrangements prior to and during filming. Suspiria premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2018. In the United States, it was released in a limited release by Amazon Studios in Los Angeles and New York on October 26, 2018, followed by Halloween screenings in select cities before opening wide on November 2, 2018. It will be released in the United Kingdom by Mubi on November 16, 2018.]

It was released on singer Glenn Danzig’s label Plan 9 Records. 5,000 copies of the single were pressed on black 7″ vinyl, some of which included a lyrics sheet. This was the first Misfits release to use their Famous Monsters of Filmland-inspired logo, as well as the first to refer to the band as simply “Misfits”. American punk rock band recognized as the progenitors of the horror punk subgenre, blending punk and other musical influences with horror film themes. Founded in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey by singer & songwriter Glenn Danzig, the group had a fluctuating lineup during its first six years, with Danzig and bassist Jerry Only as the only consistent members. During this time they released several EPs and singles, and with Only’s brother Doyle as guitarist, the albums Walk Among Us (1982) and Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood (1983), both considered touchstones of the early-1980s hardcore punk movement. When Williams asked Davis what her new record sounded like, she used her fabulous sense of humor to compare it to Chubby Checker. Things really got good when Williams announced that Davis would be performing a little tune for the audience. Davis brought the awesome in a sparkly blue dress, with some sassy dance moves and a set of raspy vocal pipes that were clearly touched by years of constant chain-smoking. The best part is that Davis was happily aware of the camp and the silliness of her performance but she let it rip, regardless. “Bette” Davis was noted for playing unsympathetic, sardonic characters, and was famous for her performances in a range of film genres, from contemporary crime melodramas to historical and period films, suspense horror, and occasional comedies, although her greatest successes were her roles in romantic dramas.

After appearing in Broadway plays, Davis moved to Hollywood in the summer of 1930. However, her early films for Universal Studios (and as a loanout to other studios) were unsuccessful. She joined Warner Bros. in 1932, and established her career with several critically acclaimed performances. In 1937, she attempted to free herself from her contract. Although she lost the well-publicized legal case against the studio, it marked the beginning of the most successful period of her career. Until the late 1940s, she was one of American cinema’s most celebrated leading ladies, known for her forceful and intense style. Davis gained a reputation as a perfectionist who could be highly combative and confrontational. She clashed with studio executives and film directors, as well as many of her co-stars. Her forthright manner, idiosyncratic speech, and ubiquitous cigarette contributed to a public persona, which has often been imitated.

Davis was the co-founder of the Hollywood Canteen, and was the first female president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, was the first person to accrue 10 Academy Award nominations for acting, and was the first woman to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. Her career went through several periods of eclipse, and she admitted that her success had often been at the expense of her personal relationships. Married four times, she was once widowed and three times divorced, and raised her children as a single parent. Her final years were marred by a long period of ill health, but she continued acting until shortly before her death from breast cancer, with more than 100 film, television, and theater roles to her credit during her six-decade-long career. In 1999, Davis was placed second behind Katharine Hepburn on the American Film Institute’s list of the greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema.

20. Madonna – “Frozen”

[7th studio album by Madonna. After giving birth to her first child, Madonna started working on the album with producers Babyface & Patrick Leonard. Following failed sessions, Madonna pursued a new musical direction with English producer William Orbit. The recording process was the longest of Madonna’s career and experienced problems with Orbit’s hardware arrangement, which would break down, and recording would be delayed until they could be repaired. A departure, Ray of Light is an electronica and dance album which incorporates multiple genres, including ambient, trip hop, and Middle Eastern music. Vocally, the album saw Madonna sing with greater breadth and a fuller tone. Mystical themes are also strongly present in both the music & lyrics, as a result of Madonna embracing Kabbalah, her study of Hinduism & Buddhism, as well as her daily practice of Ashtanga Yoga. The album received universal acclaim, with reviews commending the singer’s new musical direction. Called her “most adventurous” record, Ray of Light has been noted for its introspective, spiritual nature, with Madonna’s vocals also being praised. Ray of Light won four Grammy Awards from a total of six nominations. The album peaked at #1 in several countries including Australia, Canada, Germany, Poland, and the UK. The album debuted at #2 on the US Billboard 200, with the biggest first-week sales by a female artist at the time, and has sold over 16 million copies worldwide. Five singles were released from the album, including the international hits “Frozen” and “Ray of Light”. The album’s promotion was later supported by the Drowned World Tour in 2001. Academics have noted the album’s influence on popular music, and how it introduced electronica into mainstream pop culture. 21. Cesar Davila-Irizarry & Charlie Clouser – “American Horror Story Theme”

[The song was composed in 1998 by César Dávila-Irizarry. Today he’s a television sound editor in Los Angeles, but back then he was just a sophomore at the University of Puerto Rico, living at his mother’s house, futzing around with digital remixes on Windows ’95. “I started playing around with the software that other people were using then, which was Cool Edit 96,” he recalls. “I was just getting some demons out.” He grew attached to a particular sparse, haunting melody and added sounds of clattering metal hangers, dripping water and white noise—all distorted beyond recognition. To some ears, the hangers might sound like an electric guitar. He gave the song to his friend Gabriel Diaz and didn’t think much about it until Diaz—now an editor at Prologue Pictures—dusted off the track a decade later and slotted it in as a temp track for the American Horror Story title sequence. (A temp track is placeholder music that editors use while working on rough cuts.) Everyone at FX and Prologue grew so accustomed to Dávila-Irizarry’s song, they decided to keep it—even after hiring composer Charlie Clouser (formerly of Nine Inch Nails) to write entirely new music. Clouser submitted four of his own demos, but each time was told to make the music sound more like the temp track.

In 1930, 22-year-old Davis moved to Hollywood to screen test for Universal Studios. Davis and her mother traveled by train to Hollywood. She later recounted her surprise that nobody from the studio was there to meet her. In fact, a studio employee had waited for her, but left because he saw nobody who “looked like an actress”. She failed her first screen test, but was used in several screen tests for other actors. In a 1971 interview with Dick Cavett, she related the experience with the observation, “I was the most Yankee-est, most modest virgin who ever walked the earth. They laid me on a couch, and I tested fifteen men … They all had to lie on top of me and give me a passionate kiss. Oh, I thought I would die. Just thought I would die.” A second test was arranged for Davis, for the 1931 film A House Divided. Hastily dressed in an ill-fitting costume with a low neckline, she was rebuffed by the film director William Wyler, who loudly commented to the assembled crew, “What do you think of these dames who show their chests and think they can get jobs?”. Carl Laemmle, the head of Universal Studios, considered terminating Davis’ employment, but cinematographer Karl Freund told him she had “lovely eyes” and would be suitable for Bad Sister (1931), in which she subsequently made her film debut. Her nervousness was compounded when she overheard the chief of production, Carl Laemmle, Jr., comment to another executive that she had “about as much sex appeal as Slim Summerville”, one of the film’s co-stars. The film was not a success, and her next role in Seed (1931) was too brief to attract attention.

Universal Studios renewed her contract for three months, and she appeared in a small role in Waterloo Bridge (1931), before being lent to Columbia Pictures for The Menace, and to Capital Films for Hell’s House (all 1932). After one year, and six unsuccessful films, Laemmle elected not to renew her contract. Davis was preparing to return to New York when actor George Arliss chose Davis for the lead female role in the Warner Bros. picture The Man Who Played God (1932), and for the rest of her life, Davis credited him with helping her achieve her “break” in Hollywood. The Saturday Evening Post wrote, “She is not only beautiful, but she bubbles with charm”, and compared her to Constance Bennett and Olive Borden.

Warner Bros. signed her to a 5-year contract, and she remained with the studio for the next 18 years. Davis married Harmon Oscar Nelson on August 18, 1932, in Yuma, Arizona. Their marriage was scrutinized by the press; his $100 a week earnings compared unfavorably with Davis’ reported $1,000 a week income. Davis addressed the issue in an interview, pointing out that many Hollywood wives earned more than their husbands, but the situation proved difficult for Nelson, who refused to allow Davis to purchase a house until he could afford to pay for it himself. Davis had several abortions during the marriage. After more than 20 film roles, the role of the vicious and slatternly Mildred Rogers in the RKO Radio production of Of Human Bondage (1934), a film adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s novel, earned Davis her first major critical acclaim. Many actresses feared playing unsympathetic characters, and several had refused the role, but Davis viewed it as an opportunity to show the range of her acting skills. Her co-star, Leslie Howard, was initially dismissive of her, but as filming progressed, his attitude changed, and he subsequently spoke highly of her abilities. The director John Cromwell allowed her relative freedom: “I let Bette have her head. I trusted her instincts.” She insisted that she be portrayed realistically in her death scene, and said: “The last stages of consumption, poverty, and neglect are not pretty, and I intended to be convincing-looking.” The film was a success, and Davis’ characterization won praise from critics, with Life writing that she gave “probably the best performance ever recorded on the screen by a U.S. actress”. Davis anticipated that her reception would encourage Warner Bros. to cast her in more important roles, and was disappointed when Jack L. Warner refused to lend her to Columbia Studios to appear in It Happened One Night, and instead cast her in the melodrama Housewife. When Davis was not nominated for an Academy Award for Of Human Bondage, The Hollywood Citizen News questioned the omission, and Norma Shearer, herself a nominee, joined a campaign to have Davis nominated. This prompted an announcement from the Academy president, Howard Estabrook, who said that under the circumstances, “any voter … may write on the ballot his or her personal choice for the winners”, thus allowing, for the only time in the Academy’s history, the consideration of a candidate not officially nominated for an award. The uproar led, however, to a change in academy voting procedures the following year, wherein nominations were determined by votes from all eligible members of a particular branch, rather than by a smaller committee, with results independently tabulated by the accounting firm Price Waterhouse. Davis appeared in Dangerous (1935) as a troubled actress, and received very good reviews.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Davis spent the early months of 1942 selling war bonds. After Jack Warner criticized her tendency to cajole crowds into buying, she reminded him that her audiences responded most strongly to her “bitch” performances. She sold $2 million worth of bonds in two days, as well as a picture of herself in Jezebel for $250,000. She also performed for black regiments as the only white member of an acting troupe formed by Hattie McDaniel, which included Lena Horne and Ethel Waters.

In 1960, Davis, a registered Democrat, appeared at the 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, where she met future President John F. Kennedy, whom she greatly admired. Outside of acting and politics, Davis was an active and practicing Episcopalian.

1961-1970: Renewed success – Davis received her final Academy Award nomination for her role as demented Baby Jane Hudson in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) Davis and Joan Crawford played two aging sisters, former actresses forced by circumstance to share a decaying Hollywood mansion. The director, Robert Aldrich, explained that Davis and Crawford were each aware of how important the film was to their respective careers, and commented: “It’s proper to say that they really detested each other, but they behaved absolutely perfectly.” After filming was completed, their public comments against each other allowed the tension to develop into a life-long feud. When Davis was nominated for an Academy Award, Crawford contacted the other Best Actress nominees (who were unable to attend the ceremonies) and offered to accept the award on their behalf, should they win. When Anne Bancroft was announced as winner, Crawford accepted the award on Bancroft’s behalf.

Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964) was Robert Aldrich’s follow-up to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?. Aldrich planned to reunite Davis and Crawford, but Crawford withdrew allegedly due to illness soon after filming began. She was replaced by Olivia de Havilland. The film was a considerable success, and brought renewed attention to its veteran cast, which also included Joseph Cotten, Mary Astor, Agnes Moorehead, and Cecil Kellaway.

Davis’ name became well known to a younger audience when Kim Carnes’ song “Bette Davis Eyes” (written by Jackie DeShannon) became a worldwide hit and the best-selling record of 1981 in the U.S., where it stayed at #1 on the music charts for more than two months. Davis’ grandson was impressed that she was the subject of a hit song and Davis considered it a compliment, writing to both Carnes and the songwriters, and accepting the gift of gold and platinum records from Carnes, and hanging them on her wall.

25. Kraftwerk – “Intermission (2009 Remaster)”

[Origianally released in October 1975. The fifth studio album by German electronic band Kraftwerk. It is a concept album organized around the theme of radio communication. To cater to the band’s international audience, all releases of the album were bilingual with lyrics in both English and German, the only localised difference being the album and track titles. being about radioactivity and the other half about activity on the radio. More word plays are evident in the track listing: “Radio Stars”, which as a title could refer to pop stars, but upon listening is revealed to be about quasars and pulsars. This was the first Kraftwerk album to be entirely self-produced by Ralf Hütter and Schneider in their Kling Klang studio, and the first one to be performed by the “classic” Hütter, Florian Schneider, Karl Bartos and Wolfgang Flür line-up. All the music was written by Hütter and Schneider, with Emil Schult collaborating on lyrics. Schult also designed the artwork – a modified illustration of a late-1930s ‘Deutscher Kleinempfänger’ radio. It was the first Kraftwerk album to feature use of the distinctive Vako Orchestron keyboard (choir, string and organ sounds), which the group had purchased on their recent US Autobahn tour and the Moog Micromoog which was used extensively on this album. Notably, it provided the harsh sounds on the track “Antenna”. The band’s custom-built electronic percussion also featured heavily in the sound, and extensive use was made of the vocoder. The usual synthesizers were present (including Minimoog and ARP Odyssey), and Hütter’s Farfisa electronic piano made a return on “Transistor”. For the first time the group did not use flute, violin or guitars. By 1975, Hütter and Schneider’s previous publishing deals with Capriccio Music and Star Musik Studio of Hamburg had expired. The compositions on Radio-Activity were published by their own newly set up Kling Klang Verlag music publishing company, giving them greater financial control over the use of songwriting output. Also, the album was the first to bear the fruit of Kling Klang as an established vanity label under the group’s new licensing deal with EMI. The album reached #59 in Canada, in February 1976. The title track “Radioactivity” was released as a single, and became a hit in France after it was used as the theme to a popular music show. The song was later re-recorded by Kraftwerk for their 1991 album The Mix. It was further remixed, for subsequent single release, by William Orbit and François Kevorkian.]

Stage & screen actor, Michael McQuary was born and raised in Portland, Oregon in the 1960s. Michael tells us that he learned about the world “sideways,” and that as a child, “the movies took care of him.”

Michael remembers, at the age of 6, pointing to the television, spellbound by Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula, he said to his mother, “Look how he holds his cape!” From then on Michael’s childhood was focused on his own creative world.

Michael is a master impressionist, with a unique take on the legendary “Monsters of Filmland” and the brightest stars of Hollywood’s golden age. Michael is also a character actor and can be seen in multiple films and shorts.

Michael was the creator of the award winning one-man shows in New York City including: Matinee Idol, Man of 1001 Faces, Crystal Allan Strikes Back, Back Then They Had Faces, My Own Space and most recently, for KC Fringe Festival “I’m Hollywood.”

He is also a visual stylist and original “Party Monster – Club Kid” from downtown NYC.

Sondra Freeman is Director of Promotions and Artist Relations for Midwest Music Foundation, a nonprofit created to support music and musicians in Kansas City and the surrounding areas, founded in 2008 by a collective of musicians and music lovers. The Midwest Music Foundation (MMF) unites and empowers the greater Kansas City music community by providing programs and resources to area musicians through outreach, support, education, and health care opportunities. [5th studio album from the six-piece band from Brighton, England. They combine indie rock and garage rock with a mixture of blaxploitation and Bollywood soundtracks, double Dutch chants, old school hip hop and distorted guitars. Their songs are a mix of live instrumentation and samples from various sources. The band’s vocals vary between performances: while live vocals are handled mostly by Ninja (with Angela Won-Yin Mak also singing some solos), vocals on record also feature sampled and guest voices. Ian Parton conceived the project after wanting to create music incorporating Sonic Youth-style guitars, double Dutch chants, Bollywood soundtracks, old school hip hop and electro. These ideas led towards the recording of Thunder, Lightning, Strike in his parents’ kitchen. Their debut album was released September 13, 2004.]

3. Yo La Tengo – “Shades of Blue”

[15th album from band formed in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1984. Since 1992, the lineup has consisted of Ira Kaplan (guitars, piano, vocals), Georgia Hubley (drums, piano, vocals), and James McNew (bass, vocals). In 2015, original guitarist Dave Schramm rejoined the band and appears on their f14th album, Stuff Like That There. Despite achieving limited mainstream success, Yo La Tengo has been called “the quintessential critics’ band” and maintains a strong cult following. They chose the name “Yo La Tengo” (Spanish for “I have it”; or referring to a female-gender object or person, also “I’ve Got Her”) in an effort to avoid any connotations in English. The name came from a baseball anecdote. During the 1962 season, New York Mets center fielder Richie Ashburn and Venezuelan shortstop Elio Chacón found themselves colliding in the outfield. When Ashburn went for a catch, he would scream, “I got it! I got it!” only to run into Chacón, who spoke only Spanish. Ashburn learned to yell, “¡Yo la tengo! ¡Yo la tengo!” instead. In a later game, Ashburn happily saw Chacón backing off. He relaxed, positioned himself to catch the ball, and was instead run over by left fielder Frank Thomas, who understood no Spanish and had missed a team meeting that proposed using the words “¡Yo la tengo!” as a way to avoid outfield collisions. After getting up, Thomas asked Ashburn, “What the hell is a Yellow Tango?”]

[20th studio album from band formed in 1982 by John Flansburgh & John Linnell. During TMBG’s early years, Flansburgh & Linnell frequently performed as a duo, often accompanied by a drum machine. In the early 1990s, TMBG expanded to include a backing band. The duo’s current backing band consists of Marty Beller, Dan Miller, and Danny Weinkauf. The group is best known for an unconventional and experimental style of alternative music. Over their career, they have found success on the modern rock and CMJ charts. More recently they have also found success in children’s music, and in theme music for several television programs and films. TMBG have released 19 studio albums. Flood has been certified platinum and their children’s music albums Here Come the ABCs, Here Come the 123s, and Here Comes Science have all been certified gold. The band has won two Grammy Awards, one in 2002 for their song “Boss of Me”, which is most known as the theme song of the television series Malcolm in the Middle. They won their second in 2009 for Here Come the 123s. The band has sold over 4 million records. Linnell and Flansburgh first met as teenagers growing up in Lincoln, Massachusetts. They began writing songs together while attending Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School but did not form a band at that time. The two attended separate colleges after high school and Linnell joined The Mundanes, a new wave group from Rhode Island. The two reunited in 1981 after moving to Brooklyn (to the same apartment building on the same day) to continue their career.]

[4th album from the music project of New England native Merrill Garbus (born March 4, 1979). Garbus’s music draws from an eclectic variety of sources and utilizes elements such as loop pedals, ukulele, vocals, and lo-fi percussion, in addition to electric bass played by Nate Brenner. Tune-Yards’ 2011 album Whokill was ranked the number one album of that year in The Village Voice’s annual Pazz and Jop critic’s poll. Garbus was raised in New York City and in New Canaan, Connecticut. She attended Smith College. She was a puppeteer for the Sandglass Theater in Vermont and lived in Montreal where she played ukulele in the band Sister Suvi with guitarist Patrick Gregoire & drummer Nico Dann. Merrill’s sister Ruth Garbus is also a musician who has played solo and in the band Happy Birthday. After releasing her first Tune-Yards album in 2006, she moved to Oakland, California, where her partner in Tune-Yards, Nate Brenner, also lives. The first Tune-Yards album, BiRd-BrAiNs was originally self-released by Garbus on recycled cassette tape. It was recorded using only a handheld voice recorder. A limited edition vinyl was released in June 2009, via the Portland-based imprint Marriage Records. In July 2009, it was announced that Tune-Yards had signed to 4AD, and a limited edition pressing of Bird-Brains was released on August 17, 2009. A full worldwide release followed on November 16, 2009 (and November 17 in North America). The autumn 2009 pressing was remastered at Abbey Road Studios by Christian Wright, and includes two new bonus tracks: “Want Me To” and “Real Live Flesh.”]

6. Betty Davis – “Nasty Gal”

[3rd studio album from Betty Davis (born Betty Mabry, July 26, 1945) who also produced this record. Betty davis is an American funk and soul singer. She is known as one of the most influential voices of the funk era and a performer who was known for her memorable live shows. Betty Mabry grew up in Durham, North Carolina, and just outside Pittsburgh. On her grandmother’s farm in Reidsville, North Carolina, she listened to B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, and Elmore James and other blues musicians. One of the first songs she wrote, at the age of twelve, was called “I’m Going to Bake That Cake of Love.” Aged 16, she left Pittsburgh for New York City, enrolling at the Fashion Institute of Technology while living with her aunt. She soaked up the Greenwich Village culture and folk music of the early 1960s. She associated herself with frequenters of the Cellar, a hip uptown club where young and stylish people congregated. It was a multiracial, artsy crowd of models, design students, actors, and singers. At the Cellar she played records and chatted people up. She also worked as a model, appearing in photo spreads in Seventeen, Ebony and Glamour. In her time in New York, she met several musicians including Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. The seeds of her musical career were planted through her friendship with soul singer Lou Courtney, who produced her first single, “The Cellar” with simple, catchy lyrics like, “Where you going fellas, so fly? / I’m going to the Cellar, my oh my / What you going to do there / We’re going to boogaloo there.” The single was a local jam for the Cellar. Yet her first professional gig was not until she wrote “Uptown (to Harlem)” for the Chambers Brothers. Their 1967 album was a major success, but Betty Mabry was focusing on her modeling career. She was successful as a model but felt bored by the work. According to Oliver Wang’s They Say I’m Different liner notes, she said, “I didn’t like modeling because you didn’t need brains to do it. It’s only going to last as long as you look good.” She met Miles Davis in 1967 and married him in September 1968. In just one year of marriage, she influenced him greatly by introducing him to the fashions and the new popular music trends of the era. In his autobiography, Miles credited Betty with helping to plant the seeds of his future musical explorations by introducing the trumpeter to psychedelic rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix and funk innovator Sly Stone. The Miles Davis album Filles de Kilimanjaro (1968) includes a song named after her and her photo on the front cover. Miles believed that Hendrix and Betty had an affair which supposedly hastened the end of their marriage, but Betty denies this. Hendrix and Miles stayed close after the divorce, planning to record, until Hendrix’s death. The influence of Hendrix and especially Sly Stone on Miles Davis was obvious on the album Bitches Brew (1970), which ushered in the era of jazz fusion. The origin of the album’s title is unknown, but some believe Miles was subtly paying tribute to Betty and her girlfriends. In fact, it is said that he originally wanted to call the album Witches Brew—it was Betty who convinced him to change it. After the end of her marriage with Davis, Betty moved to London, probably around 1971, to pursue her modeling career. She wrote music while in the UK and returned to the US around 1972 with the intention of recording songs with Santana. Instead, she recorded her own songs with a group of West Coast funk musicians. Her first record, Betty Davis, was released in 1973. She had two minor hits on the Billboard R&B chart: “If I’m in Luck I Might Get Picked Up”, which reached no. 66 in 1973, and “Shut Off the Lights”, which reached no. 97 in 1975. Davis released two more studio albums, They Say I’m Different (1974) and her major label debut on Island Records Nasty Gal (1975). None of the three albums was a commercial success. Davis remained a cult figure as a singer, due in part to her open sexual attitude, which was controversial for the time. Some of her shows were boycotted, and her songs were not played on the radio due to pressure by religious groups and the NAACP. Both Betty Davis (1973) and They Say I’m Different (1974) were re-released by Light in the Attic Records on May 1, 2007. In September 2009, Light in the Attic Records reissued Nasty Gal and her unreleased fourth studio album recorded in 1976, re-titled as Is It Love or Desire?. Both reissues contained extensive liner notes and shed some light on the mystery of why her fourth album, considered possibly to be her best work by many members of her last band (Herbie Hancock, Chuck Rainey, Alphonse Mouzon), was shelved by the record label and remained unreleased for 33 years. After some final recording sessions in 1979 (Crashin’ from Passion), Davis eventually stopped making music and returned to Pennsylvania. Material from the 1979 recording sessions was eventually used for two bootleg albums, Hangin’ Out in Hollywood (1995) and Crashin’ from Passion (1996). A greatest hits album, Anti Love: The Best of Betty Davis, was released in 2000.]

Andrew Grayman-Parkhurst, is Managing Director of Spinning Tree Theatre, and a co-founder of the theatre with partner Michael Grayman-Parkhurst. Andrew grew up in Kansas City and received his Bachelors in Fine Arts from Texas Christian University. He has been a member of Actor Equity Association since 1996. As a dancer he has worked with Roman Polanski, he was chosen and directed by Alvin Ailey at age 16 to dance Memoria. Andrew sang and danced on 2009 Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall. He has been a part of five international productions of West Side Story. He has worked all over the world as an actor and dancer in shows such as: Call Me Madam, La Cage aux Folles, and Evita. He was an original cast member and dance captain of the Broadway touring production of Mamma Mia! for over 2,000 performances. He was in the touring company of Chicago. He has worked as a choreographer on Broadway, and in New York City, across the country, and in Kansas City for The Coterie, Starlight Theatre, New Theatre, and The Midland. FULL GALLOP is based on the life of fashion doyenne Diana Vreeland, who stood at the center of American style for five decades. As editor of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue magazines, and as a member of the International Café Society, she chronicled the extraordinary people and events of her time.

FULL GALLOP is a portrait of this remarkable woman at a turning point in her life. Vreeland has just returned home to New York after four months in Europe—a trip she took after being fired from Vogue magazine. She throws an impromptu dinner party in the hope that a wealthy friend who is invited will bankroll her in starting a magazine of her own. Other friends, however, attempt to persuade her to take a job at the famed Metropolitan Museum of Art. In her distinctive style, once she decides in which direction her life will move, she goes at it “full gallop.”

8. The Sea and Cake – “Any Day”

[11th album and first new album in 6 years from indie rock band with a jazz influence, based in Chicago. The group formed in the mid-1990s from members of The Coctails (Archer Prewitt), Shrimp Boat (Sam Prekop and Eric Claridge), and Tortoise (John McEntire); the group’s name came from a willful reinterpretation (as the result of an accidental miscomprehension) of “The C in Cake”, a song by Gastr del Sol. Starting with 1997’s The Fawn, the group has relied on electronic sound sources, such as drum machines and synthesizers, to color its music, but has retained its distinctive post-jazz combo style. The band has shied away from releasing singles, preferring the album format. Contrary to his multi-instrumentalist role in Tortoise, John McEntire almost exclusively plays drums in The Sea and Cake. Members Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, and John McEntire each have released solo albums. The cover art of The Sea And Cake’s releases are largely paintings by member Eric Claridge and photographs by Prekop. (Postcards of some of the One Bedroom-era photos were sold on the band’s 2003 tour.) Prewitt has been involved in publishing his own comic books and doing graphic design. The band was on hiatus from 2004 to 2007, returning with Everybody. Their eighth studio album, Car Alarm, was released in October 2008. Their album, “Runner” was released in 2012.]

[Produced by Stevie Wonder under the name “El Toro Negro” to circumvent Motown’s refusal to allow him to produce the record for Epic. Minnie Julia Riperton-Rudolph (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979), known professionally as Minnie Riperton, was an American singer-songwriter best known for her 1975 single “Lovin’ You” and her five-octave coloratura soprano. She is also widely known for her use of the whistle register and has been referred to by the media as the “Queen of the whistle register”. Born in 1947, Riperton grew up in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side. As a child, she studied music, drama, and dance at Chicago’s Lincoln Center. In her teen years, she sang lead vocals for the Chicago-based girl group, The Gems. Her early affiliation with the legendary Chicago-based Chess Records afforded her the opportunity to sing backup for various established artists such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters. While at Chess, Riperton also sang lead for the experimental rock/soul group Rotary Connection, from 1967 to 1971. On April 5, 1975, Riperton reached the apex of her career with her no. 1 single, “Lovin’ You”. The single was the last release from her 1974 gold album entitled Perfect Angel. In January 1976, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a radical mastectomy. By the time of diagnosis, the cancer had metastasized and she was given about six months to live. Despite the grim prognosis, she continued recording and touring. She was one of the first celebrities to go public with her breast cancer diagnosis, but did not disclose she was terminally ill. In 1977, she became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. In 1978, she received the American Cancer Society’s Courage Award which was presented to her at the White House by President Jimmy Carter. Riperton died of cancer on July 12, 1979 at age 31.]

13. Stevie Wonder – “You Haven’t Done Nothing”
from: Fullfillingness First Finale / Motown / 1974
[Stevie Wonder; widely considered one of the albums from his “classic period”. Released on July 22, 1974 on the Tamla label, it is Wonder’s nineteenth album overall, and seventeenth studio album. According to Billboard magazine, it was Wonder’s first studio album to top the Pop Albums chart where it remained for two weeks, while it was his third album to top the R&B/Black Albums chart where it spent nine non-consecutive weeks. Subsequent to the epic sweep and social consciousness of Innervisions, this set projected a reflective, decidedly somber tone. The musical arrangements used in several songs while masterly could be considered sparse in comparison to others among his 1970s masterworks, especially in the bleak “They Won’t Go When I Go” and understated “Creepin'”. While largely a stripped down, more personal sounding record, Wonder had not completely foregone social commentary on the world around him. The No. 1 hit “You Haven’t Done Nothin'” launched a pointed criticism of the Nixon administration bolstered by clavinet, drum machine, and a Jackson 5 cameo. The album received three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, in 1974.]

Ryan Lee Toms is a Kansas City based multi-instumentalist, composer and artist who has recorded original experimental dance electronic music as RLT with John Besuch. Ryan also plays guitar with the math rock band HMPH! and he plays drums for the Kansas City based, 5-piece post-punk deathrock band Beelzebabes. All the while Ryan has also been nurturing a fourth collaboration called FACEFACE, an experimental electronic hiphop musical collaboration with Paul S Nyakatura.

[4th full length album from Swedish folk duo of sisters: Klara (vocals/guitar) and Johanna Söderberg (vocals/keyboards/Autoharp/bass guitar). When performing live, the duo are accompanied by a drummer, a pedal steel guitarist and recently a keyboard player. They have now released four albums, two EPs and a handful of singles. In 2015 they were nominated for a Brit Award as one of the 5 best international groups. Sisters Johanna & Klara Söderberg are from Enskede, in the outskirts of Stockholm. Johanna was born Oct 31, 1990 and Klara on Jan 8, 1993. Their father was a member of the Swedish rock band Lolita Pop but he quit before Johanna was born and later became a teacher of history & religion. Their mother is a teacher of cinematography. From childhood, Klara & Johanna were eager singers by giving concerts using a jump rope as a pretend microphone. Klara’s first favorite songs were Judy Garland’s songs from The Wizard of Oz and Billie Holiday’s version of Gloomy Sunday, that she sang without much understanding of the English lyrics. Klara wrote her first song “Femton mil i min Barbiebil” when she was six. They both attended the International English school of Enskede. Klara applied for admission to a music school but she was not accepted. In 2005 when Klara was 12, a friend introduced her to the band Bright Eyes. This led her to country music stars such as Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Carter family, Louvin Brothers, Townes Van Zandt, Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. The same year she received a guitar as a Christmas present and quickly learned to play it. Johanna enjoyed a wide range of music from Britney Spears to German Techno. However, it wasn’t until watching the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? and listening to the film’s soundtrack that she was inspired to sing “Down to the River to Pray” with sister, Klara. Fascinated by the result they started to sing together at home and then as street singers, in the Stockholm metro and in front of liquor stores. They came up with the name for their band simply by randomly opening a dictionary.Klara and Johanna also started to write and compose their own country-folk songs inspired by Devendra Banhart and CocoRosie, among others, without much influence from their parents who were more fond of Patti Smith, Velvet Underground and Pixies. Their father confessed later in a Swedish radio program that he was astonished and actually a little jealous of the ease his daughters had in producing top-notch music. The most important advice their father gave to them was to sing so loud that even somebody behind the wall could hear it.]

KC’s community Balinese gamelan orchestra, Gamelan Genta Kasturi, is celebrating 10 Years, with a special concert, Sat May 18, 4:00 pm, in the Truman Forum of the Plaza Branch of the KC Public Library, 4801 Main St, showcasing material from 10 years.

Director Patrick Alonso Conway joined us to share information on this special concert from Gamelan Genta Kasturi.

“Angels and Demons at Play” was composed by Patrick Alonso Conway for Charlotte Street Foundation’s Urban Culture Project, in partnership with ArtSounds (a collaboration between the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance and the Kansas City Art Institute.)

Gamelan Genta Kasturi, is celebrating 10 Years, in a special Concert, Saturday May 18, 4:00 pm, in the Truman Forum of the Plaza Branch of the KC Public Library, 4801 Main St, KCMO, showcasing material from 10 years, including traditional Balinese and original compositions by founder I Ketút Gedé Asnawa and current director Patrick Alonzo Conway, with visual images by artist Jennifer Lynn Williams and shadow imagery by artist Nihan Yesil.

A gamelan is a traditional musical ensemble from Indonesia, typically from the islands of Java and Bali, featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, kendang (drums) & gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed & plucked strings. Vocalists may also be included. For most Indonesians, gamelan music is an integral part of Indonesian culture.

The term refers more to the set of instruments than to the players of those instruments. A gamelan is a set of instruments, as a distinctentity, built and tuned to stay together – instruments from different gamelan are generally not interchangeable.

Bali is a province of Indonesia. The province covers a few small neighboring islands as well as the isle of Bali. The main island is located in the western most end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Javato the west and Lombok to the east. It is one of the country’s 34 provinces with the provincial capital at Denpasar towards the S. of the island.

Patrick Alonzo Conway went to Bali.

With a population recorded as 3,891,428 in the 2010 census, and currently 4.22 million, the island is home to most of Indonesia’s Hindu minority. In the 2000 census about 92.29% of Bali’s population adhered to Balinese Hinduism while most of the remainder, follow Islam. It is also the largest tourist destination in the country and is renowned for its highly developed arts, including traditional and modern dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metal working, and music. A tourist haven for decades, Bali has seen a further surge in tourist numbers in recent years.

“Hello Again” Co-Director and Spinning Tree Theatre Managing Director, Andy Parkhurst and Kansas City based professional actor, Charles Fugate who plays the role of The Senator in Hello Again, joinedus on Wednesday MidDay Medley.

“Hello Again” is the 6th show of Spinning Tree Theatre. Andy founded this new professional theatre company with partner Michael Grayson and have produced several shows and musicals that have made their Kansas City debuts. Andy talked about what moved the company to produce “Hello Again” here in Kansas City.

Produced 20 years ago, this show featured John Cameron Mitchell who later went on to create a little show called “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and “Short Bus,” along with Broadway queen, Donna Murphey, and Malcolm Gets.

“Hello Again” is billed as an “Adult Musical”

Charles most recently performed in Spinning Tree Theatre’s Kansas City Premiere of “Shipwrecked! last February. Charles has worked at almost every theatre in Kansas City. Charles talked about his experience with Spinning Tree Threatre.

Charles Fugate plays the role of The Senator. The characters in the show all have names like: the Young Thing, the soldier, the whore

Mike Webber is an encyclopedic musical jukebox, a music lover, you met at that record store, that helped you find that special song, that you could only hum a few bars for him to hear. His faith in music and truth guided him as he grew up in KC, spent childhood Summers in the Mississippi Delta, “came of age” working in area record stores, of the 70s and 80s, including: Caper’s Corner Records & Tapes at 47th & Mission, PennyLane, and Music Exchange. Mike went to college at KU and TulaneUniversity. He has chronicled and sometimes photographed many musical greats. Mike got married, raised a family, served time in Iraq, and has continued lifelong friendships with many local and national musicians. Mike and his wife Marta are moving to Austin, Texas in June.

Mike Webber grew up in KC but talked about his summer childhood experiences in the Mississippi Delta (Cleveland) as part of the Memphis media market listening to WHBQ in Memphis. In the late 1960’s to early 1970’s, the radio informed his musical tastes, but also influenced social/political outlook. Mixed in with some great childhood memories were many moments that made us wince even then.

Mike returned to live in Mississippi (Jackson) again in the early 90’s and had the chance to see BB King, the Staple Singers & others perform hometown gigs.

Mike Webber told us the story about photographing Pops Staples in Drew, MS and giving the photograph to Mavis Staples at the Kaufman Center last year.

“P.S. I Love You” – The Beatles – The Big Bang!

Mike Webber was born in March 1964, one month after the Beatles arrived in America. He discovered that the first albums in the house that weren’t children’s records were his brother’s copies of “Meet The Beatles” and “The Early Beatles.” The first record he ever asked for was the 45″ of “Hey Jude” when he was 4. Mike started asking for nothing but Beatles records for every birthday and Christmas. He had a check-list provided by Capitol Records, which is how he learned of things like non-LP B-sides. While he thought he had all of the Beatles records “inexistence,” he discovered bootlegs at a flea market in Memphis and then imports at Capers Corner! He realized that he’ll never have EVERYTHING. Everybody who knew Mike, his family, teachers & classmates – identified him with his fanaticism for The Beatles. All these years later, they still do.

6. The Beatles –”P.S. I Love You”

[In February 1963, the Beatles recorded 10 songs during asingle marathon studio session for their debut LP, Please Please Me. The album was supplemented by the 4 tracks already released on their first 2 singles. Parlophone rush-released the album in the United Kingdom to capitalize on thesuccess of singles “Please, Please, Me” and “Love Me Do.” Of the album’s 14 songs, 8 were written by Lennon–McCartney.]

“I’ll Take You There – Conversations with Mike Webber”

Mike talked about a story specific to “PS I Love You”, related to a skating rink in Mission, where a 10-year old Mike Webber decided to himself that if the skate parlor deejay played a good song, he would ask a girl to skate with him. The Deejay then played the Beatles,”P.S. I Love You,” Mike took the sign and headed toward the young lady to propose, but he slipped and took a header on the concrete bench.

Capers Corner provided a spontaneous meeting place for grieving Elvis & John Lennon fans who needed some kind of communal feeling and didn’t know where to go but knew they wouldn’t be judged in a place like that.

“Go Now” from Wings, but sung by Denny Laine, formerly of the Moody Blues, on Wings Over America, the live recording of Wings 1976 concert. This concert is still Mike’s all-time favorite live music event and certainly among the most memorable in Kansas City concert history. McCartney & Wings played the Kemper Arena in 1976. Mike’s first and third concerts were Elvis Presley at Kemper Arena. He was so glad to have seen the King, but he was always first and foremost a Beatles fan, so seeing McCartney – the first Beatle in KC in 12 years at that point – was earth shaking. McCartney was riding a wave of success with “Silly Love Songs” and “Let ‘Em In” both in the charts and in those pre-internet days, we didn’t need “spoiler alerts”. McCartney hadn’t toured America as a solo act before, and in his earlier European tours he hadn’t played any of his Beatles era compositions, so when he played that familiar piano intro to “Lady Madonna”, Kemper shook. In a long set-list full of solo and Wings hits, he only played four Beatles songs total but that was enough. Former Moody Blue Denny Laine was a member of Wings, so it was a huge bonus to also get to hear “Go Now” one of Mike’s favorite songs – live as well.

7. Wings – “Go Now”

[A song composed by Larry Banks and Milton Bennett. It was first recorded in 1964 by Bessie Banks, and then most successfully by The Moody Blues. Wings over America is a live album by the band Wings, in its initial release, it was a triple album and included a poster of the band, which peaked at number 1 in the US. The album was a collection of recordings gathered from Wings’ Wings Over America part of their world tour. A re-mastered recording, is set to be released, in May 2013. Denny Laine sang this song with The Moody Blues and also on tour as a member of Wings.]

That Wings show was atypical in that instead of the usual ticket outlets, the initial ticket sales were entirely at Kemper Arena. Mike’s brother & his friend Keith Copaken’s father, Paul Copaken, went to wait for tickets but the show sold out. They were crushed. Later, the Copakens were able to get “limited view” tickets behind the stage. Mike was already a customer at Capers Corner, barely 12 years old, but he used to spend all of his lunch money there, and they knew how badly he wanted to see Wings. A couple of weeks before the show, the guy who always helped Mike buy import EPs there (locked in an under bin) called Mike’s home to say he’d found a couple of great lower level tickets at face value. So Mike and his friend Keith wound up in Section 120, Lower Level and Corky Carrel became a lifelong friend with whom Mike is still in weekly contact.

Mike’s other memorable Kansas City concerts of the period:

1) Rolling Stones’ “Tattoo You” shows, in 1981, with the Mick Taylor appearance, which Mike and his friends had been told, might happen by Mick Taylor, himself, whose autograph they sought, at an Alvin Lee concert at the Uptown.

2) Elton John’s “Jump Up” show at Starlight Theater that was broadcast worldwide on Westwood One Radio Network.

3) The Kinks’ “Low Budget” shows at Memorial Hall- twice on the same tour’s beginning and end.

4) The Jacksons’ “Victory Tour” – which was really more memorable as Michael Jackson’s Thriller tour.

“Cynical Girl” – Marshall Crenshaw – While Mike was working at Capers, Marshall Crenshaw released what many still consider one of the best debut albums that anyone ever made in any genre. That song – and the album on which it appeared – still puts Mike’s head back in high school. Mike took some photos of Crenshaw playing the old Parody Hall a few years laterand last year when he played a solo show at Knuckleheads, Mike gave him copies. Crenshaw was genuinely moved by the images and appreciative of the set Mike gave him. Mike also had one that he’d taken with Crenshaw when he did an in-store at Capers Corner that had been so poorly attended that Mike had tocall his high school classmates and tell them to come in and act like fans.

8. Marshall Crenshaw – “Cynical Girl”

[Born in Detroit, November 11, 1953, singer, songwriter andguitarist best known for his song “Someday, Someway.” Crenshaw’s music has roots in classic soul music, British Invasion song craft, Burt Bacharach and Buddy Holly — the latter to whom Crenshaw was often compared inthe early days of his career, and whom he portrayed in the 1987 film La Bamba. Crenshaw is also a noted guitarist who uses off beat chord progressions (almost verging towards jazz) and concise solos.]

Capers Corner was the best job any kid could have had during that period in this town. Mike would go hang out at his job on his off-days. Reliable access to concert tickets improved his high school dating average. Bars would let them in without ID, albeit you could drink at 18 then, so Mike was only cheating by two years. Mike got jobs for a couple of his best friends from high school and was hanging out with the older guys who worked at Capers. Being over in Wyandotte County, you met a different group of people than over in Shawnee Mission East, so it just had everything going for it. When Mike gets nostalgic for those years, it’s really less about high school than about working at this really great record store where he got to hang out with his friends, meet touring artists, had the best possible influences for budding tastes in any genre of music, and then all the intangibles.

Mike Webber shared a few stories about the Kansas Bureau of Investigation undercover agents trying to bust the head shop inside Capers. Mike also talked about his high school counselor wanting Kenny Rogers tickets.

We didn’t have time to hear Mike’s stories of partying with the Grateful Dead and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

11:20 – “So Blue About You” – True Believers

Mike stopped working at Capers when he started college at KU and he wanted a job where he could work in Lawrence during the school year and in KC during the summers, so he started working at PennyLane. Mike worked for and with a lot of great characters: LeRoi, Saul Tucker, April Fletcher, and Mike Soden who now lives in Austin. Capers always held a unique place in Mike’s heart, but PennyLane was great and had so many different locations. It was never boring. Working in downtown Lawrence wasn’t much like working at the Broadway store. They had in-store appearances by bands like Camper VanBeethoven, but then Mike also learned that the first time David George ever played an in-store, it was our Broadway location.

While Mike was working at PennyLane on Broadway, He heard about this great band that was playing around the corner at the Lone Star. He had actually met one of the guys – Alejandro Escovedo – when he was in Rank & File but hell, he had barely been old enough to drive at that time. So by now, Mike was in college and after that poorly-attended show at the Lone Star, what seemed like all of the coolest people he knew from here, and the guys in True Believers, started this friendship that continues through to today. They’d come through town pretty regularly until about 1987 and Mike would get together with them every time. They had some incredibly memorable moments – not least being an occasion when they hung out with Martha Reeves, Mary Wells, David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations – who happened to be staying at the same hotel. Like Marshall Crenshaw, True Believers seemed like a “can’t miss” act that somehow just couldn’t get over the hump at the time. Now, they’re playing together again in Austin and Mike is still in touch with them, so the last page on all this hasn’t been written yet.

After PennyLane (and KU), Mike worked at Music Exchange for a year while not planning his next move. On a whim, Mike took the GMAT and did well enough that Tulane University in New Orleans offered him a full academic scholarship, so Mike moved to New Orleans and never again drew a paycheck from the music business, but remained an ardent music fan.

“Message to Michael” – Dionne Warwick – was co-written by Kansas City-born Burt Bacharach. Mike’s habit of championing all things Kansas City really was pronounced whenever he lived away from KC. At Tulane, Mike had a fellow student ask, “what in the hell is wrong with you?” that he was such a partisan of his hometown. Mike was born and mostly raised in KC and although he had left before and is now leaving again, Mike has never regretted having grown up here. Unfortunately, Kansas City happens to straddle two dysfunctional states, but the impression left by when and where Mike grew up is what caused his wife & he to move back to KC about 9 years ago to finish raising their kids. Oh yeah, the wife and kids …Tying back to that Dionne Warwick recording, the first line of that song is “spread your wings for New Orleans” and that’s really what Mike did.

10. Dionne Warwick – “Message to Michael”

[1966 “Top Ten” hit by Dionne Warwick, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The song’s lyrics, are addressed to a bluebird, by a woman, in Kentucky, whose sweetheart is vainly pursuing musical stardom in New Orleans. The woman asks the blue bird to take a message to Michael, asking him to return to her.]

Coincidentally, the two gender-specific versions of that song are “Message to Michael” and “Message to Martha” and New Orleans is where Mike would meet his wife, Marta, and where their first-born arrived. Their second child was born in Jackson, Mississippi. Both finished high school at Shawnee Mission East where Mike had graduated in 1982. New Orleans was transformative. Mike really went down there still a kid in very many ways, but he left with a wife and daughter. That city and the woman he married there, turned the boy into a man.

“Rosalie” – Alejandro Escovedo – Mike’s wife is Mexican and this song is one of Marta’s favorites, written by Austin, Texaslocal legend Alejandro Escovedo – previously discussed as a True Believer – whore mains a friend of theirs. Austin is the city where Mike most wanted to live but hadn’t until now.

Austin is also near where Marta was raised in San Antonio, so they’ll be near some of her family. They’ll be straight down I-35 and will still see a lot of their KC friends when they play in Austin – many during the MidCoast takeover at SXSW. That means a lot to Mike because particularly during this last 9-year stint in KC, they’ve made so many very dear friends, including a lot of KC’s music scene. Mike has been watching the KC music scene for over 30 years and it is his considered opinion that KC has not had a comparable level of local talent, like it currently possesses, since he’s been aware. Itis the one thing that he feels is so much better than when he was working in the record stores here. Mike is comforted by the knowledge that their couches and spare rooms will be a destination for many touring KC acts in years to come.

11:39 – I’ll Take You There – Conversations with Mike Webber

We’ve been playing songs to help move the conversation along but while all of them are favorites, several songs that automatically feature in any list Mike makes have not been played, so perhaps we could wind up with three that usually go 1-2-3 in my all-time list of favorites (which bars Beatles songs as part of my own personal Fairness Doctrine).

All three of these songs have always had a hold on Mike, even before he was experienced to know what they really meant. A couple of notes from any of them and he is back in his dad’s car in the 60’s, hearing music on a single speaker in the dashboard and probably waiting for burgers and onion rings at Sydney’s on the Plaza. Mike loved these songs as a toddler but only when he got a little older and your heart gets broken, a parent dies, other loved ones die, you talk to a doctor about a tumor … those are the experiences that will cause you to get in a car, happen to catch one of these songs on the radio and just melt in a way that is crushing yet reminds you that you’re alive as well.

Formed in 1964, the three unrelated musicians adopted the ‘Walker Brothers’ name as a show business touch—”simply because we liked it.” They provided a unique counterpoint to the British Invasion in that they were a group from the United States that achieved much more success in the United Kingdom than in their home country, during the period when the popularity of British bands such as The Beatles dominated the US.]

[All-woman, African-American a cappella ensemble. A Grammy Award-winning (and many times nominated) troupe who express their history as women of color. They have together worked from four women, to the difficult five-part harmony, with a sixth member translating with sign language. Founded in 1973 by Bernice Johnson Reagon, who was teaching a vocal workshop with the Washington, D.C. Black Repertory Company. Dr. Reagon retired from the group in 2004. Their name was derived from a song, based on Psalm 81:16, which tells of a land so rich that when rocks were cracked open, honey flowed from them. Sweet Honey in the Rock has been producing music for more than 30 years. Although the members of the group have changed over 3 decades, their music has consistently combined contemporary rhythms and narratives with a musical style rooted in the Gospel music, spirituals and hymns of the African-American Church. They’ve addressed topics including motherhood, spirituality, freedom, civil rights, domestic violence, immigration issues, and racism.]

[In 2008 Sweet Honey In The Rock joined forces with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for an historic collaboration, “Go In Grace.” Choreographed by Ailey dancer Hope Boykin, the work featured new music by Sweet Honey, who performed on stage with members of the Ailey troupe. Through song and dance he audience was taken on a journey into the challenges and joys of one special family. “Go with Grace” was part of the 35th anniversary celebration for Sweet Honey In The Rock, and the 50th anniversary celebration for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Lowrey told INK that they, “We’re trying to cross over into the realm of modern jazz by writing arrangements of songs that aren’t staples in jazz repertoire.” The album title comes from the lyrics of “Under the Milky Way,” originally by new wave band The Church. That track was the first arrangement Estes and Lowrey worked on together five years ago, and features guest vocals from Jeff Harshbarger.]

Jennie Greenberry received her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from Stephens College in 2008, she is a member of Actors Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers. Jennie has appeared on stage at the Kansas City Rep, The Coterie, New Theatre Restaurant, American Heartland Theatre, and in New York City at the New Victory Theatre, playing roles in Hairspray, Pippin, The Wiz, Little Shop of Horrors, Lucky Duck, A Christmas Carol, A Chorus Line and many others.

Bob Linebarger graduated from Baker University May 2010. He has worked at Theater for Young America, The Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre, Chatterbox Audio Theatre and The Living Room Theatre, playing roles in Carousel, At The End of Apathy, and Tommy. You can also see him in a web series that he and his friend Matt McAndrews put together called “Between Bob and Matt.” Inspired by their deep love of comedian Zach Galifinakis and his “Between Two Ferns” web series, they interview actors and review shows from the Kansas City area in the worst way.

Kansas City native Deanna Hurst, performed in The Rocky Horrow Show at The Unicorn and Forbidden Broadway for Theatre League before moving to Los Angeles in 1990 where she who has worked as a professional actor, singer, and voice over artist. In 2011 Deanna formed the band Wildwood Highway with her friends Periel, and Bradford Lee Stanfield. In 2012 they recorded their self titled debut EP in Nashville.

Deanna Hurst co-wrote the song “Leap of Faith” with Roz Esposito, Deanna talked about the inspiration for the song.

Even though Kansas City is Deanna’s hometown, she worked professionally in Los Angeles and Dallas in the 1980s, and after returning to Kansas City to be on stage in productions at the American Heartland Theatre, The Unicorn, and Theatre League she traveled with the Forbidden Broadway show to Arizona and then permanently moved to LA in the 1990.

Deanna described Her early years in LA working at Aspen Optical, as “living a Bohemian lifestyle.” She worked for several years with The Circle X Theatre Company, (the LA home of our playwriting friend Jeff Goode.)

Deanna worked at the San Diego Repertory Theatre and the Northcoast Repertory Theatre.

Along with theatre Deanna has worked as a vocalist, singer, and voice-over artist, for commercials on radio and television. Deanna has also done several books on tape, including books by Ann Coulter, Teri Hatcher.

Deanna talked about how she ended up getting the same voice over agent as that of the late great “Voice of God” – Don LaFontaine who passed away in 2008, and was an American voice actor famous for recording more than 5,000 film trailers and hundreds of thousands of television advertisements, network promotions, and video game trailers.

Deanna talked about her work in a car commercial that will be air during this weekend’s big Super Bowl broadcast on CBS Television.

Throughout all of this Deanna also got married and became a step-mom.

Deanna met her good friend Periel in the early 1990s at Genghis Cohen, an asian restaurant and bar and one of LA’s hip musical venues.

Deanna met Bradford Lee Stanfield at The Alley several years later.

The three singers helped each other out as solo artists, and in 2011 they decided to form a band.

The band is unique because there are three lead singers, three separate, songwriters, who take turns singing lead vocals.

Bradford Lee Stanfield produced the new recordings for Wildwood Highway. The songs were recorded in Nashville.

The songs were mixed back in LA, it was there that Bill Payne of the famous band, Little Feat, brought his hammond B3 and Piano skills to your songs.

The band is working on releasing a full length recording this year.

Case #1 – 90.1 FM is a grassroots movement, a radio station created by the people in the village. 35 years ago those people created a not-for-profit, 501 (c) 3 organization called, The MidCoast Radio Project and for ten years volunteers worked to raise the funds to buy a signal, a tower, and create a physical station with studios and offices, to serve the community. In February of 1988, KKFI began broadcasting over the airwaves…

Those first radio shows were prerecorded on reel to reel tape in the basement of Tom Crane’s house on Pennsylvania Ave, and then delivered to the tower site and transmitter, where they were played. Tom Crane was there in the beginning and has played a vital role in KKFI’s development over the years.

Tom Crane talked about the early years, charity bingo, the reel to reel recordings.

Tom also talked about Anne Winter who hosted a KKFI show as “Little Orphan Annie” and produced Kansas City’s very first Punk show on the airwaves.

Grammy Nominated Iris DeMent has performed at all over the world, at Carnegie Hall, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Late Show with David Letterman, and the Grand Ole Opry. She was born in rural Paragould, AR, the youngest of 14 children. At the age of three, her family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music. Upon graduating high school, she relocated to KC to attend college. After a series of jobs waitressing and typing, she first began composing songs at the age of 25. Honing her skills at open-mic nights. In 1988 she moved to Nashville, where she contacted producer Jim Rooney, who helped her land a record contract. She made her recording debut in 1991 /1992, with her release: “Infamous Angel.” Iris has collaborated w/ John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith, John McCutcheon, Randy Scruggs, Tom Russell and Kansas City bus driver Gary Kirkland. Iris married singer-songwriter Greg Brown on November 21, 2002, while she still lived in KC. They now live together in Iowa. Last week Iris DeMent released her new recording “Sing The Delta” on Flariella Records, that includes 12 new songs. It is her first album of all new material in 16 years, since her fantastic 1996 release, “The Way I Should.” Iris’ new release “Sing The Delta” is already receiving great critical acclaim, and she is currently on the road singing her new songs.

Last year on 11-11-11 Iris and Greg Brown performed together here in Kansas City in a benefit for St. Mark Early Childhood and Family Development Center, That night she surprised me when she only performed one or two songs that I had heard before. Instead she shared with the packed crowd at the Folly, many of her new songs that ended up on this record. Iris discussed the process of writing the songs and getting them recorded and produced in the studio.

I read where Iris has said that she “learned about music from people who didn’t use music as entertainment.” That her “parents lived very on the edge. They had a gazillion kids and came from an area where people live on the edge. They used music as a life source. That music had to come through for them and make them feel like they could get up on Monday and keep going.” She said that “You think that’s one of the reasons why you didn’t write for so long. I learned about music as a life line. I feel like that’s the kind of task I’m trying to take on every time I try and write something. I’ve got to make somebody want to keep going. That’s what music was about.”

Iris DeMent has a long history of doing benefit shows for groups like 90.1 FM. In 2004 she and Greg Brown opened for Amy Goodman at Community Christian Church. In the 2002 she did a benefit concert for The Friends of Community Radio and invited Greg Brown to open the concert at Unity Temple, then several months later she and Greg were married in a private ceremony in the offices of Rev. Sam Mann of St. Mark Church here in KC.

Kansas City is where Iris started her musical career, singing in coffeehouses. Iris talked about how she loves that we claim her as one of our own, here in Kansas City.

The liner notes of Iris DeMent’s new record talks about St. Mark Church and how the Church took her in during a dark time of her life. She found inspiration at St. Mark, inspiration from the people of the church and also from the pastor of the church, Rev. Sam Mann who she originally heard over the airwaves of 90.1 FM KKFI, and met at an anti-war rally at the fountains near 47th and Broadway near the Country Club Plaza.

The photographs for Iris DeMent’s new album were taken by her stepdaughter Pieta Brown, all except for one photograph that is in many ways a symbol of this recording, that was photographed by her daughter, Dasha Brown. Iris talked about the photo and it’s special meaning.

The new recording contains many songs about her family, and especially her mother, who died last year at age 93. Iris DeMent’s mother sings on her debut “Infamous Angel” and we definitely feel her presence on “Sing The Delta.” Iris writes that her mother dreamed of being a professional singer, and how she asked Iris one day, “Ain’t you got tard yet of trapesin’ All over the country?”

I read a review of “Sing The Delta” that starts off by referencing Iris DeMent’s song, “Let the Mystery Be” from her debut “Infamous Angel.” The reviewer connected that song to her new 5th release, 20 years later, with new lyrics and stories that continue to examine the “religious doctrine on life and death.” The reviewer also references Iris DeMent’s 2004 release “Life Line” which was a collection of traditional protestant hymns.

In reading many of the reviews of Iris DeMent’s new recording, I was struck by the personal relationship Iris has with her fans, who fell in love with “Infamous Angel” and have followed her through these past 20 years, and this period where she has recorded with so many other artists, toured consistently, but also was busy with her family, husband, and daughter. That because her songs were so honest and heartfelt, and special, her fans accepted and understood why it might have taken some time for this new recording of 12 new songs.

We are in the middle of our Fall Fund Drive here at 90.1 KKFI. Iris has had many connections to this radio station. We mentioned Sam Mann, who at one time hosted a radio program on 90.1 FM. Another person who helped build this station was our mutual friend Anne Winter. Iris talked about how she met Anne Winter.

Iris is currently on the road doing shows in Toronto Canada, along the East Coast and Florida and also on the west coast in California.

Iris & Greg currently are living in Iowa City, Iowa.

Leonard Bernstein called her “The Bible of Opera.” In 2006, Opera News wrote of her: “Nearly thirty years after her death, she’s still the definition of the diva as artist—and still one of classical music’s best-selling vocalists.” She was born in New York City on December 2, 1923 and she on September 16, 1977, at 53. Maria Callas was an American-born Greek soprano and one of the most renowned and versatile opera singers of the 20th century. Her remarkable musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.

Tony and Emmy Award winning Playwright Terrence McNally, who has written about Maria Callas in several of his plays including The Lisbon Traviata, put his muse, Maria Callas center stage, for his play of 1995, “Master Class,” that focuses on Maria Callas after she has headlined every major opera house, and accepts an invitation from The Juilliard School to conduct a series of sold-out master classes for a select group of young professionals. Master Class won both the 1996 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play and the 1996 Tony Award for Best Play.

Spinning Tree Theatre has created it’s own new identity through the musicals and plays it has produced of these past two years.

In “Master Class” Maria Callas, is glamorous, commanding, larger-than-life, caustic, and surprisingly drop-dead funny. Alternately dismayed and impressed by the students who parade before her, she retreats into recollections about the glories of her own life and career. Included in her musings are her younger years as an ugly duckling, her fierce hatred of her rivals, the unforgiving press that savaged her early performances, her triumphs at La Scala, and her affair with Aristotle Onassis. It culminates into a monologue about sacrifice taken in the name of art.

Kip Niven recently appeared in the Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s production of August: Osage County. In Kansas City he has appeared at Starlight Theatre, New Theatre Restaurant, The Coterie Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, Musical Theatre Heritage, and Kansas City Actor’s Theatre. Kip is projext coordinator for EARTh, Equity Actors Readers Theatre, and serves as vice president of Equity’s Kansas City Area Liasion Committee. Kip Niven plays Henry in Spinning Tree Theatre’s new production of “The Fantasticks.”

Julie Shaw is know for brinbging down the house in musical numbers performed at The Quality Hill Playhouse. She has worked on stage in productions at The Unicorn Theatre, Chestnut Fine Arts Center, Musical Theatre Heritage, The Coterie and The Folly. The Fantasticks premiered at the Sullivan Street Playhouse, a small off-Broadway theatre in New York City’s Greenwich Village, on May 3, 1960. The production closed on January 13, 2002, after 17,162 performances. It is the world’s longest-running musical and the longest-running uninterrupted show of any kind in the United States. Does it feel like theatrical royalty being part of this little show. 42 years is a long run, to what do you credit to the long life of this show?

With music by Harvey Schmidt, lyrics by Tom Jones, The Spinning Tree Theatre’s production features Jakob Wozniak as the pianist and Associate Musical Director, Peggy Friesen on Harp, w/ Krista Lang Blackwood as Musical Director, Resident M.D. of Spinning Tree Theatre. Most know the song, “Try To Remember.”

The Fantasticks tells an allegorical story, loosely based on the play “The Romancers” (“Les Romanesques”) by Edmond Rostand, concerning two neighboring fathers who trick their children, Luisa and Matt, into falling in love by pretending to feud and erecting a wall between their houses. The fathers then hire traveling actors to stage a mock abduction, so that Matt can heroically seem to save Luisa, settling the supposed feud and securing their fathers’ blessings (which the young lovers have really had all along). When the children discover the deception, they reject the arranged love match and separate. Each then gains disillusioning experiences of the real world, seen in parallel fantasy sequences. They return to each other bruised but enlightened, and they renew their vows with more maturity.
Elements of the play are also drawn from the story of Pyramus and Thisbe, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore.

Bess Wallerstein joined us from the Kauffman Center for The Performing Arts. Bess has worked in the KC Theatre as an artist, administrator, producer & teacher. She has worked for The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival and for Theatre League. In 2005, she founded One Time Productions with KC visual artist, Johnny Naugahyde. In 2008, she directed True West by Sam Shepard in an airstream trailer outside in a backyard in Brookside. In 2009 she directed the KC Premiere of Arts or Crafts, at the Bloch Art Center, in collaboration with The Kansas City Art Institute. She is the founder of CounterClockwise Comedy, an experimental comedy group which performs comedy shows and live comedy movie roasts at Screenland Theatre. Last winter Bess also was a performer in “A White Nose Christmas” a show she created with David Wayne Reed and Heidi Van for The Fishtank Performance Space. The trio will be creating a new show this fall called Anchor Baby. Bess made our interview with Laurie Anderson possible. Thank you Bess!

Laurie Anderson is an American experimental performance artist, composer and musician. She began studying classical violin at five and performed with the Chicago Youth Symphony. In 1966 she moved to New York City, where she received her B.A at Barnard College in 1969 and her Masters in Fine Arts from Columbia University in 1972. For two years she taught art history at the City University of New York. One of her early performance art pieces was titled: Automotive (1972), for which she orchestrated car horns. In Duets on Ice, another early piece, she wore ice skates frozen in blocks of ice; and then proceeded to play a duet with herself on an altered violin. Laurie Anderson became widely known outside the art world in 1981 when her single “O Superman” reached number two on the UK pop charts. The success of O Superman, led to Laurie Anderson’s long and critically acclaimed recording career that has produced 8 studio albums, several live albums including the amazing 4 cd set of United States and her 2002 release Live in New York, her retrospective compilation: “Talk Normal,” several soundtrack albums, and musical collaborations with Brian Eno, William S. Burroughs, Peter Gabriel, John Zorn, Antony Hegarty and Lou Reed who she married in 2008. We talked with Laurie Anderson, on the phone, LIVE from Montreal where she was in rehearsals for a performance she would be doing in Montreal with Rufus Wainwright.

In the liner notes to “Talk Normal” the 2-CD retrospective collection of 35 songs from Laurie’s first seven studio albums, Laurie is quoted as saying: “I’m not really a professional anything,” “Well, maybe a professional storyteller. But all the music and the pictures are just ways to tell the stories.”

Laurie has called “Transitory Life” a survey of themes from her life, a mental movie that includes stories and characters from her adventures. Some of the stories in Transitory Life are inspired by Laurie Anderson’s “Happiness Project” where she worked on an Amish farm, at a McDonald’s in Chinatown in NYC, and when she hitch-hiked from her neighborhood in NYC to the North Pole.

“Transitory Life” is the opening track from Laurie’s critically acclaimed 2010 release: “Homeland” which she produced with Lou Reed and Roma Baran, and which was created over several years from improvisations on tour.

The themes explored in Homeland include: US foreign policy, torture, economic collapse, the erosion of personal freedom, medical malpractice, religion and cynicism. You approach these themes as journeys, asking where we are going, what we are doing, translating the headlines of today into perspectives that are haunting, but also demonstrate her great sense of humor.

Laurie Anderson is currently touring North America, performing her piece “Delusion” in Montreal and presenting your exhibition “Forty-Nine Days in The Bardo” in Philadelphia.

Laurie Anderson has described the violin as an alter ego of herself, where she does the talking and the violin does the crying. Another of her alter ego characters is achieved by her use of filters that alter her own voice to create what her husband, Lou Reed, has named: Fenway Bergamot. Fenway Bergamot appears on the cover of her critically acclaimed 2010 release HOMELAND. This character also played a role in the television series she did for PBS in the 1980s and he has made appearances in many of her live shows and recordings over the years. Peggy Friesen & Michael Grayman joined us to discuss the KC premiere of Joan Didion’s “The Year of Magical Thinking,” produced by Spinning Tree Theatre, and running October 12-23, at The Living Room, 1818 McGee in KC.

Peggy Friesen has been a professional actress in the Kansas City for over 25 years. She received her masters of Fine Arts from Ohio State University and has performed in over 50 productions at Kansas City Repertory Theatre, and dozens of productions at the Unicorn Theatre where she won Best Actress Award from The Pitch in 2000 for the play “Wit.” On film, Peggy Friesen has appeared in many films and has worked with Directors: Robert Altman, Steven Soderbergh, and Ang Lee. Peggy is also a professional harpist, playing both concert and Celtic instruments. She shares an old house with her husband, musician, photographer, and T’ai Chi instructor, Royal Scanlon.

Michael Grayman is the Artistic Director at Spinning Tree Theatre. Michael most recently directed Spinning Tree Theatre’s inaugural production of “Make Me a Song: The Music of William Finn” at Kansas City Crown Center’s Off Center Theatre. As a resident director at The Barnstormers Theatre in New Hampshire he Directed A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Brigadoon and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. In the Fall of 2010 he was represented as Associate Director of Sylvia at The New Theatre in Kansas City. He is a teaching artist for Coterie Theatre and Accelerated School Overland Park. As a member of Actors’ Equity Association, he made his national tour debut at age 14 with The King and I. Other Broadway national tours include Mamma Mia! and the 40th anniversary production of West Side Story. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Michael is a graduate of the Cincinnati School for Creative and Performing Arts. Michael holds a BFA from The Boston Conservatory and is also a member of Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

Michael Grayman, after many years working in New York City and in Delaware, started Spinning Tree Theatre, with his partner Andy Parkhurst, here in Kansas City. Michael told us that the name Spinning Tree after a long brainstorming session to find a name that evoked the spirit of their theatre vision.

Michael talked about seeing the Broadway production of Joan Didion’s “The Year of Magical Thinking” starring Vanessa Redgrave.

The last time Peggy Friesen was a guest on Wednesday MidDay Medley was when she visited us to discuss “Nickel and Dimed” a show produced by The Unicorn Theatre, another play, based on a popular book, written by another fierce female author/journalist. Peggy Friesen has been able to bring to life on the stage, many amazing female characters. Michael talked about how this play seemed to be perfect for Peggy Friesen. Peggy Discussed the challenges of a one-woman-show and how she uses the audience, as a character, she plays to, in her performances.

The Year of Magical Thinking is written in a stream-of-consciousness style, in which ideas are introduced and repeated, images and memories get triggered unexpectedly, and information is processed in real time and then integrated into the overall narrative. In this book, Didion doesn’t simply tell us how she thinks: she shows us.

The Year of Magical Thinking documents Didion’s experience of grief after losing her husband John, and also serves as a memorial to their relationship and forty-year marriage. At the same time, she is dealing with her daughter Quintana Roo Dunne, who spends most of the book in either a coma or a state of slow recovery. Her daughter Quintana also eventually dies, in a tragic postscript.

In the 2005 NY Times review of this book, critic Robert Pinsky wrote, “”The Year of Magical Thinking” is not a downer. On the contrary. Though the material is literally terrible, the writing is exhilarating and what unfolds resembles an adventure narrative: a forced expedition. As in Didion’s previous writing, her sense of timing, sentence by sentence and in the arrangement of scenes, draws the reader forward. Her manner is deadpan funny, slicing away banality with an air that is ruthless yet meticulous.”

The Book won the National Book Award in November 2005 and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Biography/Autobiography.

On March 29, 2007, Didion’s adaptation of her book for Broadway, directed by David Hare, opened with Vanessa Redgrave as the sole cast member. The play expands upon the memoir by dealing with Quintana’s death. Redgrave reprised her role to largely positive reviews at London’s National Theatre.
