[Second full-length album by Californian experimental rock duo of Sam France, 22 year old vocalist and songwriter, originally from Olympia, Washington, and Jonathan Rado, also 22, who is a songwriter, guitarist, and keyboard player, originally form NYC. Formed in 2005, the band self-released several EPs between 2007 and 2011. In 2012 the group was signed to Jagjaguwar Records. This album was produced by Richard Swift and recorded at his National Freedom studio.]

2. Cowboy Indian Bear – “Does Anybody See You Out?”
from: Single Track Release / The Record Machine / Jan. 2013
[First Single release download from their upcoming 2nd full-length album: “Live Old, Die Young” that will be released on White Vinyl in April! The download also includes the songs: “Sheets,” “Live Old, Die Old,” and “Crime & Feel” on The Record Machine’s Tumblr page. Joshua Browning served the band as producer and engineer. The songs were recorded over a three year period, where the band was also constantly touring, living on the road, keeping the van running. 4. Sleepy Kitty – “Don’t You Start”

[St. Louis based band via Chicago. Paige Brubeck on vocals/guitar/keys, and Evan Sult (formerly of Harvey Danger) on drums/vocals/tapes. In the past few years the band has opended for Neon Trees, Dresden Dolls, Deerhoof, and Chuck Berry. While at home, Sleepy Kitty runs a screenprinting studio out of a 19th century warehouse where they specialize in handprinted show posters for bands & venues in St. Lu, Chicago & NYC.]

5. Radkey – “We’re Going Down”

[The Deli KC announced on their blog last week that The Deli’s Best Emerging Kansas City Artist of 2012 is Radkey! The three-piece band swept the competition, with a landslide of votes from local music jurors. Taking second place was Making Movies, followed closely by Schwervon! The complete ranking of the list of 48 very fine Kansas City area bands is posted at kansascity.thedelimagazine.com. Radkey is a band made up of three teenage brothers Darrion, Isaiah, and Solomon. Their influences include The Who and Nirvana.]

Sean Starowitz is a 2010 graduate of the Interdisciplinary Arts program at the Kansas City Art Institute. Sean is also the co-founder of Bread! KC, with classmate Andrew Erdrich that since 2010 has fed over 1000 attendees and raised over $12,000 in grants for art and community projects. Last year Sean and Andrew created The Speakeasy a six-week temporary cultural center at the La Esquina Gallery, for the Charlotte Street Foundation. Currently Bread! KC is collaborating with the UMKC Theatre Department, for “Eat This! KC Chews on the Politics of Food,” written and directed by Stephanie Roberts. Sean Starowitz joined to discuss the launch of Byproduct: The Laundromat, a project he organized and received a Rocket Grant through the Andy Warhol Foundation to produce, that begins at 7:00 PM this Sat, February 9th, at Walnut Place Laundromat in KCMO.

Sean Starowitz talked about challenging the notion of traditional art spaces.

During the first wash cycle, the series will begin with a screening of Kentucky-based filmmaker Ron Schildknect’s “My Porcelain Past,” a short documentary about that chronicles the last day of operation for a Louisville, Kentucky landmark, a White Castle Restaurant. You are from Louisville.

During the dry cycle, the programming will continue with KCAI professor and poet Jordan Stempleman, who will host a Common Sense Reading.

Sean Starowitz talked about the Rocket Grant he received through the Andy Warhol Foundation.

Sean Starowitz and Bread! KC are collaborating with Stephanie Roberts and “Eat This! KC Chews on the Politics of Food.” Stephanie and company members will with us on WMM in three weeks on February 27.

“Starowitz creates opportunities for alternative economies and exchanges, such as Wheels for Meals, BREAD! KC , and The Burnt Ends Residency.”

6. Bloodbirds – “Radiation”

[KC based Psychedelic post-punk trio featuring ex-Ad Astra Per Aspera member Mike Tuley, his wife Brooke Tuley and Anna St. Louis. The album will be available as a vinyl LP in April. Recorded at Junior’s Motel, with additional recording at the Worst Place in the World, and House Tuley. Rcorded by Kirk Kaufman and Mike Tuley. Mixed by Mike Tuley.

7. Schwervon! – “Daydream Ration”

[2 piece rock band. Nan plays drums & Matt plays guitar and they both sing. They lived in NYC for 15 years and recently relocated to KC. Last year they opened for both The Vaselines and Belle & Sebastian. They recorded Courage with Memphis-based engineer Doug Easley who’s worked with Pavement, Sonic Youth, Cat Power.]

Middle of The Map Festival Announcement…

Now in its 3rd year, Ink’s Middle of the Map Fest, curated by The Record Machine, returns to Kansas City this spring with an expanded lineup. Ink’s Middle of the Map Fest is the brainchild of Nathan Reusch of The Record Machine. This year’s Music Fest will take place April 4th through 6th at the Record Bar, Riot Room, The Uptown Theater, Union, Gusto Lounge, and Westport Coffeehouse.

Returning to the Fest for the second year, the Forum will feature speakers, technological and cultural panel dialogues, collaborative performances April 17th 18th and 19th at OfficePort in the Crossroads Arts District.

The Festival expands this year to include its first Film Fest taking place May 1 – 5 at the Alamo Drafthouse in downtown KC.

10. Tennis – “Origins”

[Produced by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, 2nd album from Denver indie pop band of husband-and-wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley. The couple met each other while studying philosophy in college, and started the band after they got back from a 7-month sailing expedition down the Eastern Atlantic Seaboard.]

“Devotional Hymns From the Church of the Darwinian Snuff Film” was the 3rd full length release from KC based singer-songwriter, Folkicide, who has described his music as “despair-core” and writes that his vision of constructive pessimism, he hopes in time, will be recognized as a new acoustical genre, fully devoted to the documentation of the delightful futility of existence. Since 2010 Folkicide has released 4 full-length recordings and one EP, writing and arranging and recording over 60 tracks. Folkicide is also a visual artist. His works are currently on display at The Midwestern Musical Co. in the Crossroads. Folkicide plays Czar Sat. Feb. 9 with Ari Lehman the original Jason Voorhees. Folkicide translated is death of folk? Folkicide explained his transition from Punk and Rock and Roll to his solo work playing non-electric. The sounds of the acoustic guitar, the expression.

Folkicide would appear to be KC’s own Nihilist anti-hero, truly rejecting all religious and moral principles, in the belief that life is meaningless.

“Empire of The Ants” is one of Folkicide’s songs from a few years ago, that he is adding drums for a future Mikal Shapiro video involving the song.

The titles of Folkicide’s recordings reflect the darkness of his songs and lyrics: Let’s Worship Degenerates, Ultimate Decimation Blues, Devotional Hymns From the Church of the Darwinian Snuff Film, The Genocide is Mean.

Last year Folkicide released “The Genocide is Mean” EP in July 1, 2012. Most of the music was recorded on May 11, 2012, by Chubby Smith at his magical tractor shed in Perry, KS.

After four years of tinkering with the idea, Folkicide’s NATO was finally recorded during April through August 2012 by Jonathan Brokow (the Anti-Roy Thomas Baker) mostly in the Folkicide basement via 4 track cassette.

It was engineered and mastered mid-August by David Moore at Merriam Shoals Studio.

All songs were originally composed by the various Queen members and then strategically deconstructed by Folkicide Mercury without disrespect or irony intended because he truly loves Queen (well, pre-Hot Space Queen anyway) and NATO in particular.

Even though the songs were written by Queen, the lyrics, especially Bohemian Rhapsody seems perfect for Folkicide’s “pessimistic exploration into the decaying frame of Western Civilization.”

Folkicide discussed the challenges of covering an entire record.

Gavin Mac is the bassist and Nick Combs is the keyboardist for The Latenight Callers. The band is currently featured with a handsome photo in the latest INK magazine.

The band is recording at Weights and Measures Soundlab, with Producer and Engineer Duane Trower.

Michelle Bacon reported in The Deli KC that this was a very collaborative process for the band.

The Latenight Callers are also playing The Second Chance Dance with Grand Marquis Friday, February 15, 98 – 11, at Californos, 4124 Pennsylvania Ave, KCMO.

Josh Enyart, is the drummer, and Jason Nash is the bassist, for the Jorge Arana Trio. Josh has been a part of the bands: Maps For Travelers, Capture The Flags, and the wild and energetic, Pixel Panda.

Jorge Arana Trio is a fusion group from Kansas City, MO. Formed early 2011, featuring members of numerous groups, including noise rock band Pixel Panda. The band incorporates elements of jazz, punk, noise, math rock, and a harmonic language reminiscent to contemporary classical.

Mark talked with Joel Friday the lead singer, and Jeremy Angotti the drummer of Six Percent.

Six Percent is a KC based punk rock band that was re-formed in 2010.

Six Percent has shared the stage with Smashing Pumpkins, 311, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Slipknot and Norma Jean.

The band features: Joel Friday on vocals, Jason Matthews on guitar & vocal, Jeremy Angotti on drums, Mike Mudry on guitar, Dustin Clements on trombone & vox, and Kenny Saunders on bass.

The band is currently working on a new recording.

The boxcar has operable doors that open up and create a proscenium stage. The public art project was funded by the City’s One Percent for Art program, which, by ordinance, sets-aside one percent of municipal building construction and renovation budgets for the inclusion of unique artwork enhancements. The One Percent for Art program is coordinated by the Municipal Art Commission.]

[Schwervon! is a two piece rock band. Nan plays drums and Matt plays guitar and they both sing. They lived in NYC for 15 years and have just relocated to Kansas City. Last year they opened for both The Vaselines and Belle & Sebastian. They recently recorded with Memphis-based engineer Doug Easley (Pavement, Sonic Youth, Cat Power).]

5. Daughn Gibson – “Reach Into The Fire”

[Carlisle, Pennsylvania based singer/songwriter, was formerly the drummer for the band Pearls and Brass. His debut solo album “All Hell” was released earlier this year on White Denim records and has received critical acclaim. Sub Pop records has signed Gibson where he is working on a full-length Sub Pop debut to be released next year. Gibson has recorded a new song called “Reach Into the Fire” that samples his new labelmates Shabazz Palaces and Tiny Vipers. He’s also added more dates to his U.S. tour.]

The Living Room Theatre’s 3rd season opened last week with Eric Bogosian’s “Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll”. starring resident artist, Forrest Attaway, who plays 12 different characters, in 12 different scenes, directed by 12 different directors. The show continues performances this week, Thursdays October 4 through Sunday October 7, at The Living Room, 1818 McGee, KCMO. Robert Trussell of The Kansas City Star wrote that “the rarefied universe of Eric Bogosian is full of truth-tellers. (Some of them — the homeless, the mentally ill, the guys serving time — tell the truth because they have nothing to lose. But others — fast-talking lawyers, rabid consumers — reveal the truth in spite of themselves. And some articulate the truth virtually by accident.)”

Forrest Attaway plays 12 characters, in 12 scenes, with 12 directors.

Robert Trussell’s review talked about… “the clear articulation of Bogosian’s principal theme: the human and planetary cost of mindless consumerism. (Each of these characters is obsessed to some degree with money.) ”

Trussell went on to write: “You might think that a 1990 piece filled with social commentary might be showing its age by now. (Maybe it does in small ways, but Bogosian’s themes remain remarkably — and depressingly — relevant. Yes, we really are poisoning the earth with chemicals. We really are poisoning ourselves at fast-food restaurants. We really do blind ourselves with drugs and alcohol. And increasingly we have consigned our fates to a global network of interactive computer systems.)”

11:13 – Interview with Dave Tanner & Albert Bickley

A Kansas City native, Albert Bickley has been writing, recording and performing original music for years. Dave Tanner, a Canadian who calls Parkville, MO, home, has played bass in numerous bands through the years from rock and heavy metal to folk and punk. He also currently plays in Liverpool: A Tribute to The Beatles. Together Albert Bickley and Dave Tanner formed The Depth and The Whisper in late 2010 as a vehicle to share new songs and ideas. In 2011 they released their debut EP of six songs, titled “One Steady Breath” that was created with musician, producer and recording engineer – John Velghe who captured the band’s sound at his at Guttersnipe Recording Co. during the spring of 2011. Since then, the band has performed in numerous KC venues and has collaborated with many of Kansas City’s finest musicians. The Depth and The Whisper play Record Bar, Oct. 17, with Frontier Ruckus.

Dave Tanner & Albert Bickley talked about how they met and eventually recorded with John Velghe.

Go-Go Ray (drums), Troy Van Horn (lead guitar), John Velghe (keyboard/Rhodes) and Elaine McMilian (backing vocals) round out the band’s sound in the studio and on stage.

Songs on the debut release are framed with openness and honestly that draw the listener to be part of the story. From their first collaborations and all the way through the recording process, it was clear that the songs would come together quickly and maintain an organic feel. Each track aims big and bright just like the opening track, “New York” encourages.

“We do what we feel is right for the song. Nothing more, nothing less,” Albert said during production. That has since become a mantra of sorts for the players on stage and in the studio.

The song “Be Together” will be used in a short film being produced by people at Hallmark, They have heard that Sara Swenson is also on the soundtrack.

Dave Tanner & Albert Bickley are currently laying groundwork for a new recording to follow last year’s EP “One Steady Breath” – you plan to hit the studio this fall for what could be an early 2013 release.

With a growing batch of follow-up songs being considered for the next recording, they want to keep the organic feel captured intuitively by producer John Velghe.

Bill Sundahl is the founder of Spice of Life Productions, “The Donkey Show,” and The Crossroads Music Festival. Bill Sundahl a musician and singer and songwriter who was part of the Pitch Music Award winning band It’s Over, that ended in 2009., and now the new KC supergroup: The Starhaven Rounders, in concert at the recordBar February 26.

Maria Vasquz Boyd is a regular contributor to Wednesday MidDay Medley where she has produced and hosted special programs. Maria is also an accomplished artist and poet and is a founding member of the Latino Writers Collective.

Philip ‘blue owl’ Hooser is an Actor, playwright, director, and dramaturgical speaker, A published poet, columnist, and sometimes theatrical reviewer. He has worked as a Teaching Artist for Coterie Theatre, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, and Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. Philip ‘blue owl’ Hooser is also creator of “Eat Their Words,” a series that is presented regularly at The Fishtank Performance Space and Prospero’s Books.

Ginny Tadlock Went to Bishop Miege High School and lives in Edgerton, Kansas. Ginny is a listener of 90.1 FM and has participated in KKFI’s Online Auction, and now she’s helping with our on-air fund drive. Ginny is also a big supportet of the arts and Kansas City’s Theatre scene.

Two of Kansas City’s favorite bands: The Hearts of Darkness and The Good Foot have teamed up for the release of their first collaborative project, a split single 7” record titled “Numeration / Bad Way”. This single grew out of a discussion between the two bands about ways to cooperate on a release, share expenses and to grow the spirit of friendly competition. The record jacket features two “front covers”, so it’s up to the bands are leaving it up to their fans and listeners to determine which song is the “A” side and which is the “B” side. The single features The Good Foot’s first released original tune: “Bad Way” on one side and Hearts of Darkness’ first single “Numeration” off the forthcoming album on the other side.

The 7″ vinyl record w/ digital download will be released Sat, Feb 18, at The inaugural Carnivàle du Soul, at the Uptown Theater, 3700 Broadway. Carnivàle du Soul was created as the gala event, of the 11 year tradition of Mardi Gras carnival season in KC. Hearts of Darkness and The Good Foot will headline the main stage. Opening the show will be DJ Fat Sal w/ Voler Aerial Fabrics. Also featured will be DJ sets by Superwolf & Joc Max. These DJs specialize in rare funk, soul, R&B, Afro-Caribbean, & reggae on vinyl. Ladysmith Black Mambazo

South Africa’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo, was formed by Joseph Shabalala, in the early 1960s. In the mid-1980s, Paul Simon visited South Africa and incorporated Black Mambazo’s harmonies into his 1986 album “Graceland” and introduced World music to mainstream audiences. “Graceland” won the Grammy Award for Best Album of the Year. In 1987, Paul Simon produced Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s first U.S. release, “Shaka Zulu,” which won the Grammy Award, for Best Traditional Folk Album in 1988. Since then, the group has received 15 Grammy Award Nominations and three Grammy Award wins, and have recorded 40 albums and sold more than 6 million records. The 10-member ensemble will be in concert at The Kauffman Center for The Performing Arts on Tues, Jan 24, at 7:30 PM. (Info at kauffmancenter.org.)

Albert Mazibuko talked about how “Diamonds on The Soles of Her Shoes” a song wriiten by his cousin Joseph Shabalala and Paul Simon, originally released on “Graceland” in 1986, (and later re-recorded for their 2006 release “Long Walk To Freedom” w/ guest Melissa Etheridge) introduced Black Mambazo to the U.S.

The band traveled to London to record “Graceland” w/ Paul Simon. Many people forget that The Apartheid system was still in place during this time, however the Apartheid government allowed the group to tour to parts of Europe. Albert Mazibuko discussed how it was difficult in those years. He talked about how when the band left the country to play ion parotids of Europe they were never sure if they would be allowed back home.

The Apartheid system was abolished in 1994. The after the release of Nelson Mandela, after 27 years imprisonment, Ladysmith Black Mambazo celebrated the end of Apartheid with their song “Isikifil’ Inkululeko” (“Freedom Has Arrived”). Nelson Mandela (shortly after his release from prison) publicly stated that the members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo were “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors”. In 1993 The band accompanied Mandela to the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, Norway at his request. Mambazo sang again at President Mandela’s inauguration in May 1994, after he became the first democratically elected President of South Africa. Albert told us how this period felt to him as a citizen of South Africa, seeing these changes in his life.

We asked Albert Mazibuko about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how his life affected Albert and his family in South Africa. Albert told us that he viewed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as an angel sent from heaven.

The name Ladysmith Black Mambazo represent the hometown of Shabalala’s family, Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal; the black ox, considered to be the strongest farm animal; and Mambazo, which means axe in the Zulu language, and is symbolic of the choir’s ability to “chop down” the competition? I read that, by the early 1970s, the group was forbidden to compete in the competitions because of their continual success.

Albert Mazibuko told us about the style of music of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, how this music evolved out of working in the mines, where workers were separated from there families for long periods.

We told Albert about how 90.1 FM KKFI – Kansas City Community Radio plays the music of Ladysmith Black Mamboza every week on our program World Sound, produced and hosted by Tom Crane, on Sundays from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.

It is reported that the group has had over 30 different members at one point or another over the past forty-five years. However it seems that the core of the group has been the families of Joseph Shabalala; his brothers (Headman and Enoch,) and currently his sons (Thamsanqa, Msizi, Thulani, and Sibongiseni and his cousins (Albert) and Albert’s brother (Abednego Mazibuko currently); (and his brothers Milton, Funokwakhe, and Joseph Mazibuko) (as well as close friends Matovoti Msimanga and Walter Malinga) and close friends Russel Mthembu and Ngane Dlamini, currently with the band. Albert discussed how it’s easier traveling with family, his brothers and cousins, because they are from the same family their voices blend in together in positive ways.

We interviewed Albert Mazibuko live on the phone from Brownsville, Texas, where the band has a show. It’s the 3rd show of their current tour that is taking them to 59 cities over the next 4 months. The group tours 8 months of the year and has traveled all over the world performing for Queens and Presidents, for Olympics. We asked Albert where his favorite places to tour & perform are and he replied his favorite place is “on the stage,” sharing their music with the audiences all over the world.

The members of the group currently reside in or near Pinetown, just outside of the coastal city of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. We asked Albert what he misses most about being away from home, and he told us that it was a food served in South Africa that is not available here: sour milk.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo has been nominated for a Grammy for their recent release, “Songs From a Zulu Farm.” This recording is important to the group because the older members were born and raised on the farms outside of Ladysmith. It is a collection of original and traditional songs that sing of life on the farm.

20. The Pedaljets – “Tangled Up”

[Formed in Lawrence, in 1984 they toured all over the country, opening for Hüsker Dü, The Flaming Lips, The Replacements. In 1988 they released their debut, “Today, Today.” Their 2nd album, “Pedaljets,” was released in 1989. And In 1990 the band went their separate ways. 20 years later The Pedaljets find themselves back in the studio. Bassist Matt Kessler passed on this track, from the band’s new sessions. The PedalJets will be in concert at the recordBar Sat, Jan 28, for Michael Byers’ B-day Party. Matt said they’ll be playing all new songs and he told us the band has been recording a lot, and are not sure about a release date, but are hoping for sometime this spring.
