Nan plays drums and Matt plays guitar and they both sing. They lived in NYC for 15 years before moving to KC. Their music and their live shows are exceptional. Generally at their live shows at one point in the show, Matt will read an original poem, written for the evening, while Nan steps out from behind the drums to performs an interpretive dance inspired, in the moment, by Matt’s poem. Matt also performs and records as Major Matt Mason USA , Nan also performs and records as, Nan and The One Nite Stands. Easily this is one of my all time favorite bands!!!]

3. Japanese Breakfast – “Road Head”

[Japanese Breakfast is the solo musical project of Michelle Zauner of Little Big League. Under the alias, Zauner has released two studio albums: Psychopomp (2016) and Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017). Prior to her solo project, Michelle Zauner fronted Post Post, an indie pop band with students from Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges, then started the Philadelphian emo band Little Big League. Zauner fronted the band between 2011 and 2014, before returning to her hometown of Eugene, Oregon in 2013. Zauner made the trek back home in the wake of her mother being diagnosed with cancer.While at home, tending her family in Oregon, Zauner began recording solo music. Zauner described the project as having much more to say following Tropical Jinx, the 2014 studio album by Little Big League. Originally, Zauner had begun to record early samples of music as a self-meditative and “instant-gratification” feeling.[3] Two years later, the solo project itself eventually became the work of Psychopomp the debut album by Japanese Breakfast. The name of the band, according to Zauner is a juxtaposition of Asian exoticism and American culture. Despite the name, Zauner is not of Japanese descent, but Korean descent.Zauner described the debut album as quite “dark and heavy-handed”, although she had a desire to make the music, urgent and “sonically upbeat.” On June 23, 2016, the Japanese Breakfast project was signed to the Dead Oceans label.]

[18 year old Kansas native, Keaton Conrad mixes indie rock, house, jazz, and hip-hop. Conrad spent two years as the lead singer & keyboardist in the cover band ChangeUp, performing around KC. In 2015 he released an original 5-song EP, Panic & Blame. In 2016 he recorded his first full-length LP entitled “Waves.” ]

Chase the Hoarseman plays Bottleneck in Lawrence on Friday, August 18, at 8:00 pm.

Recently Chase finished working on the debut album from Kwame Boateng.

KD Kuro is the musical project of Kwame Boateng, a Kansas City based rapper. He was born in Arlington, Virginia, and graduated from Olathe South High School in 2008. After attending Coffeyville Community College Kwame as KD Kuro started his rap career in 2012 and has been cultivating and refining his sound over the course of the last 5 years. Kwame grew up with musical influences like N.E.R.D and Missy Elliot that helped to mold the music he creates. His debut album is called “Good/Luck” and it was just released yesterday, August 1, and was co-produced by Chase the Horseman and Nathan “Geesace” Gisecke. “Good/Luck” was years in the making and Kwame is ready for Kansas City and hopefully the world to hear what he is all about.

Great Grandpa began in Seattle in 2014 when guitarist & vocalist Patrick Goodwin recruited bassist Carrie Miller, drummer Cam LaFlam, and vocalist Alex Menne to form a humble rock band. Inspired by the pop-sensible alternative rock of the 90’s, and offset by a mutual love for noise and math rock, the group set forth to write and record their first EP. During recording, guitarist Dylan Hanwright joined the group, solidifying the lineup. Great Grandpa began performing in the Seattle area in late 2014, frequenting the city’s DIY venues. In March of 2015, their debut EP Can Opener was released on Broken World Media. [Cracked Actor (Live Los Angeles ’74) is a live album by David Bowie. It was released posthumously as a Record Store Day release on 22 April 2017 through Parlophone record label. Produced by Bowie and mixed by Tony Visconti, it was recorded on the Diamond Dogs Tour in September 1974, some material from which appeared in the BBC documentary Cracked Actor.The full show spans across five sides of vinyl, with the sixth featuring an etching of Bowie. The album differs from the first Bowie live album, David Live, recorded on the same tour. It features a different and more R&B-oriented lineup, including long time collaborators Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar, as well as, backing singer Luther Vandross. The setlist also includes material recorded for The Gouster, an album which later would turn into Young Americans.] Pitchfork wrote: “This live album is culled from a show late in David’s Bowie’s 1974 tour. It’s heavy on material from Diamond Dogs and Aladdin Sane and finds a drug-addled Bowie in a moment of transition.”]

Vice’s debut EP, Christflow, contains the hurried flows and slick production made popular by artists like Skepta and Jme.” Aron also wrote in Shuttlecock Muaic Magazine: “Iddy Vice is a problem. We first met The Clementines as a duo Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer when they played LIVE on our show last year on April 25. Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO, and studied Special Education with Music at Metropolitan MO CC, in KCMO. Tim Jenkins grew up in KC. Studied at UMKC. He has been playing music for over 10 years. Last year veteran drummer Stephanie Williams joined the band onDrums, along with Travis Earnshaw who joined the band on Bass.

Sasha Banks in Overground Magazine wrote, “When The Clementines hit the stage, they pretty much set the benchmark for excellence. Classically trained guitarists, with an alternative folk style with strong, sultry vocals, this duo did nothing short of completely shaking The Brick to the ground.” Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer, are The Clementines, and they will play The Riot Room, tonight Wednesday, April 25, at 8:00 PM. They also play Jerry’s Bait Shop on Monday, April 30.

Tim & Nicole were introduced by a mutual friend, Craig, in late February of 2011.

The Clementines have been together since last February, when Springer put out a Craigslist ad seeking a musical collaborator. She received a number of responses but was most impressed by Jenkins. (“I’ve been playing for about 12 years but mostly just in garage bands that never left the garage,” Jenkins says.) They met and clicked, and in April they started gigging regularly at local open-mic nights. Since that time, they have written over 20 songs and have even recorded a demo.

The Clementines, music is labeled: acoustic alt. rock, blues, jazz, & folk-pop.

The Clementines, get their name from the main character in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, Missouri, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, Missouri, and studied Special Education with Music at Metropolitan MO CC, in KCMO.

Nicole told The Pitch (in a Jan. 10, 2012 article): “I grew up singing in gospel choirs, in Oak Grove,” she says. “And I still love gospel music, though I’m not religious or anything. I did musicals throughout high school, and I went to school for a year at Missouri State for music education. But I’ve never been in a committed band before this one.”

Nicole told David Hudnall of The Pitch: (her) vision for the Clementines was initially inspired by the Irish folk duo the Swell Season. “I had just seen them in concert before I put up that ad,” Springer says. “They’re just so passionate, and I wanted to do something that had that much soul in it. It’s the same reason I like Aretha or the Gossip.”

Tim Jenkins grew up in KC. Studied at UMKC. He has been playing music for over 12 years.

From David Hudnall’s article in The Pitch: Jenkins, a fan of “geek rock, like ’70s prog stuff,” brought a different sensibility to the table.

“I usually bring in a song,” Springer says, “and Tim will tweak it and add solos and sometimes a riff ― he helps complete it.” “I think we know what our strong suits are,” Jenkins says. “Nicole’s voice is the main draw. And we try to mix that with a blues-folk sound that has a little pop sensibility.”

Chris Haghirian is a 12 year veteran of The Kansas City Star. Chris helped launch INK in 2008. Chris is one of the primary organizers of The Middle of The Map Festival, Midcoast cares: A Benefit for Joplin, and the past three years of MidCoast Takeover SXSW. Chris is also a regular contributor to The Mailbox, a weekly podcast radio show produced and hosted by Michael Byars that is available Midwest Music Foundation’s website: midwestmusicfound.org where you’ll also find links to MidCoast Takeover.

The third annual MidCoast Takeover, March 16th and 17th, at Shangri-La in Austin, TX.

“The Midcoast Takeover Benefit shows are created to raise funds specifically for the expense of two full days (and night) of the showcase in Austin, Texas, at The SXSW Music Festival. Renting a venue in a prime area is expensive. Unlike a lot of other showcases, the Kansas City organizers invest in top notch production for sound and lights, which are transported to Austin and back home. In addition, there are advertising costs, website design and maintenance, printing costs for posters and handbills. The showcase in Austin is free to the public, so organisers raise all the funds in advance. Everyone involved works to ensure that our Kansas City bands have the best production and best support that organisers can manage.”

MidCoast Takeover was born from The Midwest Music Foundation a not-for-profit organization that has the amazing mission of supporting and helping to create a safety net for our amazing, hard working, local musical artists. The Midwest Music Foundation has given birth to many annual events to raise funds and awareness for the Kansas City Music Scene. MidCoast Takeover is rooted this amazing objective.

Chris and Mark talked about some of the other principle organizers of MidCoast Takeover: Rhonda Lyne, Christopher Meck, Abigail Henderson, Sondra Freeman, and Amy Farrand. These people have donated hours and hours of time and work, to help make our Kansas City music community stronger.

Ross Brown grew up in West rural Olathe. His band Fullbloods will be in concert this Sat, Feb 18, at 10:00 PM at The Brick, 1727 MCGEE, w/ Richard the Lionhearted from Columbia and Millions of Boys from Omaha, w/ an acoustic set by Jerad Tomasino.

Jerad Tomasino moved around a lot growing up but spent some of his high school years living in Omaha. Jerad has released solo recordings and his also a member of the critically acclaimed band, Everyday/Everynight. Jerad and Ross join us today to talk about Golden Sound Records, their involvement in the Midcoast Takeover 2012, The Middle of The Map Festival and the Kansas City Music Scene.

Ross grew up in west rural Olathe.

Jerad came from a Military family, and moved around alot, but claims Omaha as a hometown.

Ross Brown started playing trumpet in junior high school band and continued through high school playing euphonium, guitar and bass in jazz band, and singing in choir. Music classes were all he took from “public school” during high school. He started writing music when he picked up guitar around 12 years old. He picked up bass and drums shortly afterwards to accompany myself on recordings. Singing wasn’t really his thing until after high school.

Jerad told us that he was one of those kids who always sang along to the radio in the car. He picked up the guitar around 7 years old. He took up acting for most of his childhood, but spent countless hours with his ears full of radio and his eyes glued to MTV. He was addicted to studying pop music. Singing was his primary form of music making until Christmas of 2000 when he got his first electric guitar. He wrote his first riff/song, “Stuff” when he was 11 and played around until he moved to Omaha. At 13 he performed his first original song, “Chocolate Warfare”, at a local talent show and got hooked. He ditched acting and set his sights on music.

Ross Brown went to DeSoto high school for a year and home-schooled the rest. After that he took a two-year audio engineering course at BRC Audio Productions, where he met Jerad and everyone in his band Fullbloods.

Jerad Tomasino went to Bellevue West, in Bellevue, Nebraska for 2 years, then he attended Lee’s Summit West for 2 years. After high school Jerad started attending classes at BRC Audio Productions where he double majored in Music Ed. and Music Therapy at The Conservatory. He had a mental breakdown, changed majors and started EverydayEverynight. Jerad will graduate from the University of Missouri at Kansas City this year majoring in Music Composition with a minor in Entrepreneurship.

Jerad met Ross at BRC, and connected with Mat Shoare and Evan Ashby while in choir at The Conservatory at UMKC. Mat Shoare is also a founding member of Everyday/Everynight and a founding partner in Golden Sound Records.

Why start a record label?

Ross Brown told us about how he and Jerad and Mat, wanted a platform for their own music and an organized body to support and encourage others to continue making music. Golden Sound Records keeps them involved in, and accountable to their craft.

Jerad told us about how music is always about more than yourself. Even the music that we personally create (as a necessity) must bounce off of other people to truly resonate. So, for Jerad, the idea of a label is an extension of his artistic output; fostering ideas and projects into realization. It makes him a stronger musician and more fulfilled person to touch and be touched by the records and artists he works with. On a logistical front, this label centralizes their efforts, and gives context to the art that is deemed as cool and lets Golden Sound Records present it in a specific way.
