Bill Sundahl & KKFI’s 30th Anniversary! + Out Here Now – Kansas City LGBT Film Festival
with: Jamie Rich, Austin Williams, Lea Hopkins, Stuart Hinds, Savannah Rodgers, & Philip blue owl Hooser
.

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / 1980
[WMM’s theme song]

2. Sunflower Bean – “I Was a Fool”
from: Twentytwo in Blue / Mom + Pop / March 23, 2018
[3-piece rock band from Glen Head, New York and Brooklyn founded in 2013. The band consists of Nick Kivlen (lead guitar and vocals), Jacob Faber (drums), and Julia Cumming (bass and lead vocals). The group has released two albums, Human Ceremony (Fat Possum Records, 2016) and Twentytwo in Blue (Mom + Pop Music, 2018). The band’s appearance at the 2014 CMJ Music Marathon received good notices from All Songs Considered’s Bob Boilen and from The New York Times’s Jon Pareles, who wrote “New York is still home to bands as varied as Sunflower Bean, whose music suggests what might have happened if psychedelia had emerged after punk and the Police rather than before.” They released their first EP, ‘’Show Me Your Seven Secrets’’, initially through their Bandcamp page on January 5, 2015, and later via Fat Possum Records. The EP, which features the singles “Tame Impala” and “2013”, was called “astonishingly good” by the NME. (The band, fans of Tame Impala, had named a song after the Australian combo, noting that Tame Impala itself had named a song “Led Zeppelin”.) Cumming provided a good description of the band’s sound at the time to i-D: “We used to call it ‘neo-psychedelia for the digital age’, and now we’ve just been calling it ‘night music’, however someone may take that. It’s like if Black Sabbath mixed with The Smiths, maybe?” The band – then as now – toured relentlessly, gaining themselves the title of New York City’s “hardest-working band” in 2014); they still tour extensively today, both as headliners and as openers for bands like Pixies, Wolf Alice, DIIV, Foxygen, Best Coast, Cherry Glazerr and Sleigh Bells.]

[Sunflower Bean plays recordBar, Tuesday, June 26, with Public Access T.V., and Instant Karma.]

3. Shy Boys – “Take The Doggie”
from: Bell House / Polyvinyl Record Co. / August 3, 2018
[Shy Boys are an American indie-pop band from Kansas City, Missouri. The line-up consists of brothers Collin Rausch and Kyle Rausch, Konnor Ervin, Kyle Little and Ross Brown. The group formed shortly after the trio became roommates in 2012. Kyle Rausch and Konnor Ervin were already band mates in the indie-pop band The ACBs and Collin had been playing for years in the Kansas City area in various bands. The three shared a love for 1960s era pop rock and soon started writing their own music. In 2014 they released the self-titled Shy Boys on High Dive Records. The album received generally positive reviews and the single “Bully Fight” was featured on Spin.com. In June 2014 the band recorded and released two more singles and one of them, “Life Is Peachy,” was featured on Stereogum. On April 4th, 2018, it was announced that the band had signed to Polyvinyl Record Co. They will be releasing their sophomore album, Bell House on August 3rd, 2018. The first single from the album, “Take the Doggie” and an accompanying lyric video were released on June 5, 2018. In 2011 we started playing songs from The I’ms, a duo made of up Collin and Kyle, who posted 6 of their self recorded songs on their Facebook page. We included this informal release in our Top Ten of The 111 Best Recordings of 2011.]

[Shy Boys plays a Record Release Show, Sat, August 4, at 8:00 PM at recordBar, 1520 Grand, KCMO.]

4. Approach – “The Luv (Clean Edit)”
from: Elegant Knock / Datura Records / January 20, 2017
[Lawrence based Sean Hunt is Approach. Sequenced, Produced, Recorded, Mixed & Mastered By: Aikido Bray at Prosidio Gardens in Lawrence. Sean Hunt writes: “Elegant Knock” started out as a beat album named after a production night I throw in Lawrence. It turned into a 10 track album that pays respect to a sound & vibe that I loved in High School. It isn’t a throwback project, it’s a “why aren’t we still freaking these sounds now” thang. My original concept was flipped when I dug out my old Ensoniq EPS 16+ and started funking around. The next thing I knew I was making an album I wanted to rap on. I did all of the production on the EPS (everything and it’s was headache) and made a few mixing edits on the Ensoniq ASR-10 (mainly stereo pans). I pushed myself to use the tools of yesteryear to capture the feeling I was seeking out (it was a pain in the ass and I lost a ton of beats in the process). I loved every second of it though. I feel like it’s the perfect bridge between my Lincoln Marshall project with Milkdrop and my album “Antique Mall” (coming soon).]

[Approach plays the I Heart Local Music – The Magazine Launch Party, Friday, June 22 at 7:00 PM at Jackpot Music Hall, with The Bad Ideas and CS Luxem.]

5. Melody’s Echo Chamber – “Breathe in, Breathe Out”
from: Bon Voyage / Fat Possum Records / June 15, 2018
[Melody’s Echo Chamber is the main project of French musician Melody Prochet. When Prochet’s previous project My Bee’s Garden supported Tame Impala on their European tour in 2010, Prochet collaborated with Kevin Parker to produce her new solo material as Melody’s Echo Chamber. The material was recorded in Parker’s makeshift studio in Perth, Australia and Prochet’s grandmother’s seaside home in the south of France. The self-titled debut album was released on Fat Possum Records in the Fall of 2012. In 2013, the debut album peaked at 61 on the US Billboard Heatseekers Album Chart. Q Magazine gave the album 8/10 calling it an “intoxicating listen that’s well worth experiencing for yourself.” Drowned in Sound’s Dom Gourlay awarded the album 9/10 and stated: “Whatever happens next, she can rest assured safe in the knowledge that together with her beau they’ve conjured up one of 2012’s–or any other year in recent memory–finest debuts.” In October 2014, Melody’s Echo Chamber released “Shirim”, the first single from her upcoming second album. In December 2014, it was announced that Melody’s Echo Chamber would play at Levitation, the 2015 Austin Psych Fest in Austin, Texas but her appearance was later cancelled due to visa issues. In April 2017 Melody Prochet released a new track on YouTube called Cross My Heart and announced a new album called Bon Voyage which she is producing independently. Bon Voyage was set to release in spring of 2017. On Tuesday 27 June 2017, in a statement released by the family of Melody Prochet, it was revealed that Melody had suffered a “serious accident” earlier in June, adding that her upcoming tour would be cancelled. On 3 April 2018, Prochet released the single “Breathe in, Breathe out” accompanied by a music video. She announced via Instagram that Bon Voyage was scheduled to release on June 15, 2018.]

6. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear – “Everybody’s Got Problems”
from: The Radio Winners – EP / Glassnote Records / July 27, 2018
[Second single from their upcoming EP. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear have garnered international acclaim, and new fans from all over the world. They signed with Glassnote Records and recorded their debut full length album in Nashville with acclaimed producer Jim Abiss. They performed their debut single “Silent Movies” on The Late Show with David Letterman, they’ve toured across the United States, and Europe, more than once. They were featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NBC’s The Today Show, and “Later With Jools Holland and played Bonnaroo, Pilgramage, and the Newport Folk Festival, and the Ryman Theatre, in Nashville. Ruth Ward has continually performed throughout her life, mostly in coffee shops and open mics, for over 30 years, even recording a solo record. In the midst of this she got married and became a mom, and was busy raising a family. Madisen Ward was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother, where Madisen grew up watching his mom perform at local coffee shops. Eventually he began to learn to play the guitar, and poured his talent for writing into the music to create original songs. They began playing Madisen’s original songs along with the occasional cover of a classic track, reinterpreted in their own incredibly beautiful performance of two voices and two guitars in harmony and orchestration. Their debut, The Skeleton Crew, was released May 9, 2015 and was our most played record that year and was #1 on WMM’s The 115 Best Recordings of 2015.]

[Madisen Ward and The Mama Bear play Royal Oak Music Theatre in Detroit, Michigan opening for Lake Street Dive, Tuesday June 26, at 7:00 PM.]

7. Jessica Paige – “Night Train”
from: Night Train – Single / Independent / June 1, 2018
[29 year old Jessica Paige moved to Kansas City from Manhattan, Kansas, after caring for her ailing grandmother for several years. She told CJ Janovy of KCUR News. “After she passed away, I started doing music full time, recorded my album and started touring.” Jessica self-produced my first album “Sweet Nothings” with Nashville-based artists and producers. The album is a reflection of the life-cycle of a relationship; the exciting and insecure beginnings to the lamenting demise of something that was once beautiful. The single released from the album, “Beautiful Life,” is a soul-pop reflection of someone trying to reconcile the conflicting emotions of trying to rescue or walk away from a relationship, while still appreciating how beautiful it is to love, regardless of how things turnout. While working on “Sweet Nothings,” Jessica settled in to Kansas City to start working with a full band and laying the groundwork for her next album.]

[Jessica Paige plays a matinee show at Replay Lounge in Lawrence, Sunday, June 24, at 5:00 pm with Carswell and Hope.]

11. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – “Talking Straight”
from: Hope Downs / Sub Pop / June 15, 2018
[Debut full-length album from Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, an Australian indie rock band formed in Melbourne in 2013 by singer-guitarists Fran Keaney, Tom Russo & Joe White. The band’s five members are Keaney, his cousin Joe White, Tom Russo, his brother Joe Russo on bass guitar, and Marcel Tussie on drums. Their debut EP, Talk Tight, was released in 2016 on Ivy League Records. It was followed by their second EP, the French Press, which was mixed by Doug Boehm and released in 2017 on Sub Pop Records. Robert Christgau gave Talk Tight an A grade, writing that “If you like the [guitar] effect—and why not, it’s beautiful—you’ll gravitate to it on sound alone. But what I’m loving at least as much is lyrics that suit the bright white male culture the sound implies.” He also compared the band’s sound to that of the Go-Betweens, a comparison that has also been made by critics like Stephen Deusner.]

12. Laura Veirs – “Seven Falls”
from: The Lookout / Raven Marching Band / April 13, 2018
[Laura Pauline Veirs was born October 24, 1973. She was raised in Colorado. She studied geology and Mandarin Chinese at Carleton College, and worked as a translator for a geological expedition in China. While growing up, she heard folk-country, classical, and pop music at home. However, she didn’t “listen seriously,” she says, until her 20s. At Carleton, she joined an all-girl punk band called Rair Kx!. After graduation, her taste moved to older country and folk, and during her time in China she began writing lyrics. In 1999, Veirs released a self-titled album, which was recorded live and featuring just herself and guitar. 2003 saw the release of Troubled by the Fire, accompanied by veteran musicians such as Bill Frisell. She then signed to Nonesuch and released Carbon Glacier. She also signed to Bella Union for European distribution. Year of Meteors followed in August 2005, and was selected by the New York Times as a “critic’s choice”. Veirs released her last full-length for Nonesuch, Saltbreakers, in 2007. July Flame appeared in January 2010 on her own Raven Marching Band Records. The Washington Post praised it. In November 2011, Veirs released the album Tumble Bee: Laura Veirs Sings Folk Songs for Children. The album presents mostly traditional songs, and features an array of guest musicians, including Colin Meloy, Jim James and Bela Fleck. Tumble Bee won a Parents’ Choice Award in 2012. In September 2012, her first feature film soundtrack was released: Hello I Must Be Going. The exclusive soundtrack features eight instrumental versions of previously released songs, five catalog favorites and one new vocal track, “Spring Song”. In August 2013, she released Warp and Weft. In 2015, she worked on the album Carrie and Lowell by Sufjan Stevens. Veirs husband and long term collaborator Tucker Martine engineered some of the album. Veirs was lead songwriter for the 2016 album case/lang/veirs, a collaborative project between Veirs, k.d. lang and Neko Case. The album received positive reviews. Veirs currently lives in Portland, Oregon. Her husband, Portland-based producer Tucker Martine, has produced her last nine albums, and plays many instruments on the records as well. Their first son, Tennessee Veirs Martine, was born in April 2010. In May 2013 they had a second son, Oz Rhodes Martine. Veirs runs a record label, Raven Marching Band Records, that has released her own and other artists’ music. In 2016, the label released Introducing Karl Blau, which was crowdfunded. In 2007, Veirs said about her lyrics, “I like to be personal in my writing, but not overly confessional.”]

2018 Celebration of Courage Award – Documentary
THE ORDINANCE PROJECT
WORLD PREMIERE SCREENING THUR JUNE 21 | 7:00PM

Be here for the world premiere of a powerful, locally-produced new documentary about the most contested piece of legislation in Kansas City history.

Directed by historian and UMKC Doctoral Candidate, Austin Williams, THE ORDINANCE PROJECT commemorates the 25th anniversary of this landmark event through the voices and personal stories of those who were there. With insightful perspectives on the root of the local gay and lesbian civil rights movement, the film transports you back to the front lines of a life or death struggle within the context of the AIDS epidemic which fanned the flames of homophobia and forced issues of LGBT discrimination to the forefront.

On June 3, 1993, the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri added “sexual orientation” to its civil rights ordinance, capping an epic, three-year civic and political battle. While activists, organizers, politicians, and opponents spent years debating this particular issue, the fight for LGBT civil rights has a much deeper past in KC which continues today.

Austin Williams will offer an Audience Q&A following the screening. Keith Spare, one of the founding members of the KC Human Rights Commission, will also be honored with a Celebration of Courage Award for his many years of service to the LGBT community.

As Austin writes, “it was one of the most highly contested pieces of legislation in Kansas City history. It marked a turning point, after which discrimination against gays and lesbians could no longer be ignored, and it demonstrated how homophobia and the fear of AIDS were not only intertwined — they were inseparable.” More information at http://www.theordinanceproject.com

Austin Williams has been working on an oral history project, Responding to AIDS: Kansas City (1981-1995), and a documentary film, The Ordinance Project. His research focuses on the Kansas City activists and politicians who supported and opposed a series of ordinances introduced in the early 1990s designed to protect gays, lesbians, and people with HIV/AIDS from experiencing discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

Austin has spent the last two and a half years studying Kansas City’s efforts to pass anti-discrimination legislation for members of the LGBT community. With the help of Stuart Hinds and the staff at The Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America (GLAMA), Austin has pored through thousands of primary sources and digitized dozens of hours of VHS footage.

Austin writes, “I have been blessed to meet many of the activists and politicians directly involved in Kansas City’s fight for civil rights. People have invited me into their homes and shared their stories over cups of coffee. THE ORDINANCE PROJECT is our collective effort to capture their memories on film.”

Austin collaborated with UMKC’s Gay & Lesbian Archive of Mid America (GLAMA) and the Kansas City LGBT Film Festival, he is currently working on an oral history project, Responding to AIDS: Kansas City (1981-1995), along with The Ordinance Project.

Austin’s research focuses on the Kansas City activists and politicians who supported and opposed a series of ordinances introduced in the early 1990s designed to protect gays, lesbians, and people with HIV/AIDS from experiencing discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

At the height of the AIDS crisis, the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri debated whether or not to amend its Civil Rights Ordinance to prevent discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and people with HIV/AIDS.

It quickly became the most highly contested piece of legislation in KC’s history, galvanizing both supporters and opponents while exposing a social divide that is still felt today.

The Ordinance Project features interviews with civic leaders such as:

Emanuel Cleaver: US Congressman, former Mayor, former Council Member

Katheryn Shields: City Council Member

Dan Cofran: Former Kansas City Council Member

14. Romanovsky & Phillips – “Homophobia”
from: Trouble In Paradise / Fresh Fruit Records / 1986
[Romanovsky & Phillips is a gay singing duo named after its members, Ron Romanovsky and Paul Phillips. They are best known for their original recordings and live performances featuring songs combining humor with poignant observations about the lives of gay men (and to a lesser extent, lesbian women) in contemporary American society. Romanovsky & Phillips began their career at San Francisco’s Valencia Rose Cafe in 1982, as the musical break for Gay Comedy Open Mike Night. They mounted their first national tour in the fall of 1983. They toured extensively in the United States, Canada and Australia. Over the years the duo released seven albums under the “Fresh Fruit” label. Sydney Daily Mirror described them as “delightful and entertaining Ambassadors of Homosexuality.” Originally a romantic couple, the two ended that aspect of their relationship in the early 1990s, but continued to record and perform together, describing themselves as “a gay Sonny and Cher” (who had also briefly continued their professional collaboration following their divorce). In 1998 they presented their full-length musical, Jayson, at the 45th Street theatre in New York. A year later the duo decided to take some time off the road. While Phillips put music on hold to pursue other interests, Romanovsky took up a new instrument: the accordion. In 2002 he released a solo album in French, Je m’appelle Dadou. In 2004, Ron was commissioned to write a “circus opera” for Nurses for the Rights of the Child, a group of labor and delivery nurses who are conscientious objectors to male circumcision. After two years of writing and several workshop performances, It’s A Boy! was premiered in August, 2006 at the 9th International Symposium on Circumcision, Genital Integrity and Human Rights at the University of Washington in Seattle. The opera featured music written for accordion, violin and five vocalists. A recording was released concurrently. Immediately following up It’s A Boy! came the release of Pittsburgh to Paris, marking Ron’s return to song writing. In December, 2006, Fresh Fruit Records re-released all of R&P’s recordings. In 2007 Ron returned to the concert stage, this time fronting a four-piece band and performing his newest material along with several updated R&P chestnuts. The year culminated in a sold-out show in Taos, New Mexico, where Ron shared the bill with comic Vicki Shaw. His newest recording, Turn Up the Fun!, released in January 2008, is a return to his queer music roots, offering 14 original tracks featuring the characteristic satire, off-beat observations and poignancy that fans have come to expect. Currently, Romanovsky performs frequently in and around his adopted hometown of Santa Fe with his quartet, “Welcome to Bohemia”.]

Featuring interviews with civic leaders such as Emanuel Cleaver, Katheryn Shields, Joanne Collins, and Dan Cofran as well as community activists Keith Spare, Lea Hopkins, David Weeda, Linda May, Jon Barnett, Steve Pierce, Kay Madden, Mark Manning, Randy Hite, Stuart Hinds, Carl Hippensteel, and Jim Hull.

Austin Williams will offer an Audience Q&A following the screening. Keith Spare, one of the founding members of the KC Human Rights Commission, will also be honored with a Celebration of Courage Award for his many years of service to the LGBT community

NORTHERN COURAGE
FRI JUNE 22 | 1:30PM
You’re invited to open your mind (and your heart) and help select the winner from this year’s honored finalists. A black male burn-survivor and amputee, on a date with a regularly-abled man, faces his demons as he attempts to experience intimacy for the first time since his accident in THE THINGS YOU THINK I’M THINKING. A son struggles to honor the identity of his recently deceased parent while his mother tries to uphold the appearance of a conventional family in SILVIA IN THE WAVES. MAN MADE is a character-driven, intimate, and riveting verité-style competition film, but also a unique social justice narrative. We follow thier emotional and physical journeys as they navigate lives as the men they are, despite very real risks inherent in the current social and political climate. TRANS YOUTH
WED JUNE 27 | 5:30PM
Young People 21 & Under Admitted Free
This brave new film follows a handful of young trans in Austin, Texas as they forge and fortify their adult identities. In an early scene, Elliot, a youth with choppy green hair, recounts how their father says trans people are ‘destroying the fabric of America.’ In the next scene, holding their phone in a shaking hand, they tell their mother, their father’s voice in the background, that they’re transgender. While trans identity is more visible than ever — the subject of television shows, talked about in the media, and tied up in controversial legislation — films that take us directly into the lives of trans youth are rare. TRANS YOUTH, by closely following seven different subjects as they navigate both the tumult and the ecstasy of growing up, lets us get to know them as individuals rather than stereotypes. Director Rebecca Adler will attend and offer a Q&A following.

WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY
WED JUNE 27 | 7:45PM
Hermit or sexpot? SNL great Molly Shannon stars as poet and fully lesbian Emily Dickinson in a brilliantly quirky comedy that challenges how history gets recorded. Writer/Director Madeline Olnek restores Dickinson’s true nature as an LGBTQ hero and model for new wave feminism. With the title taken from her raciest poem, WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY sheds new light on the life of famously reclusive poet, revealing her hidden romance with her brother’s wife, and the irreverent side of Dickinson that the world at large never saw. Exploring the fierce rivalry between her brother’s wife and his mistress—who published Dickinson’s poems after her death—the film is also about the struggle to bring to life the work of one of history’s most gifted poets.

15. Thelma Houston – “Don’t Leave Me This Way (Single Version)”
from: Any Way You Like It / Motown / December 2, 1976
[George Benson on guitar. Produced by Hal Davis. “Don’t Leave Me This Way” was covered by Motown in 1976. Originally assigned to Diana Ross, it was intended to be the follow-up to her hit “Love Hangover” but was reassigned and given to the upcoming Motown artist Thelma Houston instead.” Written by Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff and Cary Gilbert. First charting as a hit for Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergrass, an act on Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International label in 1975, “Don’t Leave Me This Way” was later a huge disco hit for Motown artist Thelma Houston in 1977. The song was also a major hit for British group the Communards in 1986. Thelma Houston was born May 7, 1946. She scored a number-one hit in 1977 with her recording of “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, which won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Houston was born in Leland, Mississippi. Her mother was a cotton picker. She and her three sisters grew up primarily in Long Beach, California. After marrying and having two children, she joined the Art Reynolds Singers gospel group and was subsequently signed as a recording artist with Dunhill Records. She is not related to Whitney Houston. In 1969, Houston released her debut album, entitled Sunshower, produced, arranged and composed by Jimmy Webb except for one track. In 1971 she signed with Motown Records but her early recordings with them were largely unsuccessful. Her most notable single during that period was “You’ve Been Doing Wrong for So Long” which peaked at #64 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart in 1974. However Houston’s vocal prowess on that track secured her a nomination for a Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. In 1973 Motown Productions announced a projected biopic of Dinah Washington which would star Houston; however the project was dropped due to difficulties in getting clearance from Washington’s relatives. In April 1974 Houston joined the cast of The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine, playing various characters during the show’s skits. The show was canceled in August and for the next several years her work was limited to demo recordings and performing at small venues. Houston took acting classes and received her first role in the 1975 made-for-television film Death Scream. In that same year Sheffield Lab released “I’ve Got the Music in Me” a Direct to disc recording by Thelma Houston and Pressure Cooker that went on to become a benchmark vinyl recording for audiophiles. The following year she recorded songs for the soundtrack of the film The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings starring Billy Dee Williams and James Earl Jones. In 1975 Houston appeared on the Golden Globe Award broadcast performing the nominated song “On & On” and also was featured in a tribute to Berry Gordy on that year’s American Music Award broadcast singing “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy”. That year Houston’s version of “Do You Know Where You’re Going To” was being set for single release when it was pulled and the song given to Diana Ross to serve as the theme song for the movie Mahogany. In 1976 Houston sang backing vocals for Motown label mate Jermaine Jackson on his album My Name Is Jermaine. Houston released her third album Any Way You Like It in 1976. The first single released was her version of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes’ 1975 song “Don’t Leave Me This Way”. In February 1977 the track hit Number 1 in the U.S. on the R&B and Club Play Singles charts, then in April 1977 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Don’t Leave Me This Way” won Houston the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the Grammys for 1977. Besides its US success “Don’t Leave Me This Way” became a hit in at least twelve countries, including the UK where it reached Number 13 despite the concurrent single release of the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes original, which reached Number 5. Also in 1977 Houston teamed up with Jerry Butler to record the album Thelma & Jerry and that November 1977 she co-starred in the film Game Show Models. It was announced in February 1977 that Houston would star as Bessie Smith in a filmation of the play Me and Bessie, to be produced by Motown; after an announcement that December that Houston was set to portray Bessie Smith in a biopic to be produced in 1978 by Columbia Pictures nothing more was heard of the project.]

[Thelma Houston played KC Pride Fest, Sun, June 3, at 6:00 at The Richard L Berkley Riverfront Park.]

An urban legend maintains that Nabors married Rock Hudson in the early ’70s, shortly before Nabors began his relationship with Cadwallader. At least publicly, the two were never more than friends. According to Hudson, the legend originated with a group of “middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach” who sent out joke invitations for their annual get-together. One year, the group invited its members to witness “the marriage of Rock Hudson & Jim Nabors,” at which Hudson would take the surname of Nabors’ most famous character, Gomer Pyle, becoming “Rock Pyle.” Those who failed to get the joke spread the rumor. Hudson was also gay but closeted, and because of the fear that one or both of them might be outed, Nabors & Hudson never spoke to each other again. 18.

10:45 – “Just say the lines and don’t bump into the furniture.”

I think my parents had a tougher time hearing that I wanted to become a Theatre Major than when I told them I was Gay. Please know, that I believe the theatre is full of all sexual orientations, straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender…just like the rest of the world. The theatre, however, is Queer friendly, accepting of LGBTQIA, it has always been a place where so many gay kids found their freedom and identity. The theatre gave gay kids their first glimpse into a world not found in their sheltered, small towns. Here in this next set is a song from Noel Coward from a album I found in my college library my freshman year. The plays of Noel Coward were captivating to me, the lyrics, wit, and diction of Noel Coward in action, is a treat.

After Noel we’ll hear Paul Lynde from the Original Broadway Cast Recording of “Bye Bye Birdie,” followed by Charles Nelson Reilly talking about his experience in “Bye Bye Birdie” while auditioning for “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”
Charles Nelson Reilly was playing three parts in Bye Bye Birdie winner of The Tony Award for Best Musical of 1960. How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying won the Tony for Best Musical in 1961 and Reilly won The Tony for his portrayal of Bud Frump.

10:47 – Songs about “Tots,” “Kids” and “Coffee”

19. Noel Coward – “What’s Going To Happen To the Tots”
from: Noel Coward in New York / drg / 2003 [orig. 1957] [Born Dec. 16, 1899 / died Mar. 26, 1973. English playwright, composer, director, actor and singer, known for his wit, flamboyance, and what Time magazine called “a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise”. Coward did not publicly acknowledge his homosexuality, but it was discussed candidly after his death by biographers including Graham Payn, his long-time partner, and in Coward’s diaries & letters, published posthumously.]

20. Paul Lynde & Marijane Maricle -“Kids”
from: Bye Bye Birdie! (Original Broadway Cast) / / 1960
[Paul Lynde’s sexual orientation was an open secret in Hollywood, although, in keeping with the prejudices of the time, it was not acknowledged or discussed in public. In a 2013 radio interview, Dick Van Dyke recalled the wrap party for Bye Bye Birdie. A series of men gave short speeches, each one praising Ann-Margret and predicting success and stardom for the young actress. When it was Paul Lynde’s turn to speak, he began, “Well, I guess I’m the only one here who doesn’t want to fuck Ann-Margret.” In 1965, Lynde was involved in an accident in which a young actor, reputed to be his lover, fell to his death from the window of their hotel room in San Francisco’s Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The two had been drinking for hours before 24-year-old James “Bing” Davidson slipped and fell eight stories, an event witnessed by two policemen, yet the event was largely kept out of the press, thus saving Lynde’s career. Despite his campy television persona, Lynde never publicly came out as gay and the press generally refrained from commenting about it. In 1976, a People magazine article on Lynde featured him and Stan Finesmith; the latter was dubbed Lynde’s “suite mate” and “chauffeur-bodyguard.” In the 1970s, this was as close as the press would come to hinting at his sexuality.]

Vibralux
Wick & The Tricks
Calvin Arsenia
Cuee
Yanna the supa flowa

There will be performances from drag queens (including MsAmanda Love!) & queer DJs.

I Heart Local Music notes: “As a straight entity, WE WILL NOT BE PROFITING FROM THIS EVENT. The only people who will be making money are the QUEER PERFORMERS and QUEER STAFF (The Jackpot will hire queer audio engineers and bar staff). This event is FOR queer members of our community, and they will be the only ones who turn a profit as a result. We feel this is an important aspect to maintain in Pride events, as many queer readers have messaged us and expressed concern that too many straight entities turn a profit from queer-targeted events. So we curated this festival to rectify that. Because we love you.”

Many thanks to Ladybird Diner, Salon Blush, and Jackpot Music Hall for helping sponsor this event to make sure our queer performers are paid.

25. Supa Flowa – “Supa Flowa”
from: The Supa Flowa EP / R.I.O.T. LLC / May 4, 2018
[Supa Flowa, also known as Yanna, is a multi-media artist and rapper currently based out of Kansas City. The Supa Flowa Ep is a very vulnerable, yet an uplifting play on Yanna’s experience in dealing with anxiety, self doubt, and becoming comfortable with the androgynous, “sunflower dyke” that she is. Her goal is to reach out to queer and LGBTQIA youth; who have endured similar experiences to hers, in finding and cultivating self love and peace of mind.]

from: “Honey”- Single / Cuee / November 27, 2017
[Cuee is a Chicago rap artist currently in Lawrence. Fally Afani writes in I Heart Local Music: Your 2017 local queer anthem is here, and we are screaming. Cuee’s “Honey” features local trans songstress Micha Anne, and it’s blasting confidence all over our speakers. LISTEN TO US. This is the track you put on when you’re gussying up for a night of raging on the Replay dance floor. In the song, Micha encourages us to “work it out,” “get sexy now,” and just “slay.” Then, Cuee (always the charmer) pops in, proudly proclaims “I’m brown skinned, I like action” and that she could “pull your girl without askin’.” We’re already a hot mess. 2017 has been such a shit year and we need this unapologetic happiness right now. Together, Cuee and Micha Anne are looking good and slaying. They are our guiding lights in dark times, and we are going to sissy that walk when we follow them into the new frontier. If this is the future of music, sign us up. We are here for it.]

[“Comeback” is the first single from SSION’s forthcoming LP, O. SSION (pronounced “shun”) is a multifaceted creative project spearheaded by Cody Critcheloe. An art-punk act fronted by flamboyant vocalist/artist Cody Critcheloe, Ssion recorded a series of underground releases during the 2000s, yet were perhaps best recognized for their extravagant live show. Ssion (pronounced “shun”) were founded in Kansas City, MO, by Critcheloe, who studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, and draw from a range of influences, including the punk spectacle of Iggy Pop and the dance-party new wave of the B-52’s as well as performance art and gay culture. Critcheloe’s artwork graces the cover of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Fever to Tell (2003) and the video for Liars’ “There’s Always Room on the Broom” (2004). Besides Critcheloe, Ssion’s membership includes, among others, backup vocalists Taylor Painter-Wolfe and Shannon Michaels, who respectively create costumes and stage props for the act’s live shows. Critcheloe made his recording debut as Ssion in 1999 with Fucked into Oblivion, a self-released cassette/CD-R. I Don’t Want New Wave & I Don’t Want the Truth, another self-released CD-R, followed in 2001. In 2003 Ssion made their label debut, releasing the Minor Treat EP and the Opportunity Bless My Soul album on Version City Records. Next, following a self-released album, Glory Hound (2005), and EP, Street Jizz (2006), Ssion signed to Sleazetone Records. Torch Song Trilogy — Written by Harvey Fierstein — Presented by The Barn Players,
at The Arts Asylum, 1000 East 9th Street, KCMO, May 31 through June 10.

Torch Song Trilogy is constructed of three moving plays told over three acts: International Stud, Fugue in a Nursery, and Widows and Children First! The life of Arnold Beckoff, a torch song-singing, Jewish drag queen living in New York City is dramatized over the span of the late 1970s and 1980s, through Stonewall, the AIDS crisis, and other ground-breaking milestones for the LGBT community. Told with a likable, human voice, Arnold struggles through love, disease, and the challenges of child-rearing. In the tradition of The Normal Heart and The Pride, and one of the pre-cursors for the seminal Angels in America, this award-winning and popular work broke new ground in the theatre: “At the height of the post-Stonewall clone era, Harvey challenged both gay and straight audiences to champion an effeminate gay man’s longings for love and family.”

CAST
Arnold – Philip blue own Hooser
Ed – Derrick Freeman
Laurel – Jennifer Loumiet
Alan – Brent Custer
Ma – Elle DeShon
David – Alex Leondedis
Lady Blues – Shelby Bessette & Lynn McCutchen
Ensemble – Sam Hoffman

The award-winning and popular work broke new ground in the theatre: “At the height of the post-Stonewall clone era, Harvey challenged both gay and straight audiences to champion an effeminate gay man’s longings for love and family.”

The first act derives its name (International Stud) from an actual gay bar of the same name at 117 Perry Street in Greenwich Village in the 1960s and 1970s. The bar had a backroom where men engaged in anonymous sex. The backroom plays a central role in the act.

Plot 1971: Arnold (Harvey Fierstein), a New York City female impersonator, meets Ed (Brian Kerwin), a bisexual schoolteacher, and they fall in love. Ed, however, is uncomfortable with his sexuality and he leaves Arnold for a girlfriend, Laurel.

1973-79: During Christmas, Arnold meets the love of his life, a male model named Alan. They settle down together, later spending a weekend with Ed and Laurel in the country, where their relationship is tested but endures. Eventually, they apply to foster a child together with a view to adoption, and their application is eventually successful and so they move to a bigger apartment. However, on their first night at their new home, Alan is killed in a homophobic attack.

1980: Months later, in the spring of 1980, Arnold’s mother comes to visit from Florida, but her visit leads to a long-overdue confrontation. Arnold’s mother disapproves of Arnold’s homosexuality and his planned adoption of a gay teenage son, David (Eddie Castrodad), as well as Arnold’s use of their family burial plot for Alan. They have a series of arguments where Arnold demands that she accept him for who he is, insisting that if she can’t then she has no place in his life. The following morning, before she returns to Florida, they have a conversation where, for the first time, they seem to understand each other. With both David and Ed (who is now more mature and settled) in his life, and a successful new career creating his own stage revue, Arnold’s life is finally complete.

Date premiered – January 15, 1982

1983 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play
1983 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play (Harvey Fierstein)
1983 Tony Award for Best Play (Harvey Fierstein)
1983 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play (Harvey Fierstein)

The central character of this play, Arnold, is a sharp-tongued, nurturing, compassionate, vulnerable, and he is someone who is unable to act normal around his mother, his lovers, and his adopted son because he loves each so dearly. This play allows readers to look beyond the invisible cultural assumptions and make it a comfortable experience. A teacher from a high school in Texas decided to add Torch Song Trilogy in his curriculum. This play was particularly important to teach due to the comfort that society feels in being silent about subjects relating to sexuality. The teacher is convinced that silence can only hurt chances of young adults who are emerging whole during their school years. This play was chosen to educate the students that love comes in all forms. Not only did this play help expand conservative minds, but the play is magically structured so that the audience is invited to build a dialogue with the onstage characters. The writing of this play is innovative and the structure of the play itself is unique that it offers ideas for students to explore and expand their ideas on how to creatively write.

The theme of this play is love, which is a universal language. Although the teacher in Houston, thought that conventional parents would be opposed to the idea that their children are learning about homosexuality, most were open to the idea and spoke about real-life experiences their friends have lived through or they have seen. The student’s parents helped their children to try to understand a world where the heterosexuals were the ones being treated the way the homosexuals were. Some students spoke about their friend’s experiences about various sexual preferences and how this play helped them understand that homosexuality is not something to be afraid of. The risk of teaching this type of story was much less than expected. This play provides a forum to explore the differences between the taboo topics of sexual orientation and gender. The difference between sexism and homophobia is distinguished as well as identifying gender roles and the society’s preconceived notion of what a “drag”, “trans”, “gay”, “lesbian” “questioning”, “a-sexual” might be. Most of these students were a group of twenty-one-year-olds, who are politically correct, but there was concern that arose about teaching this type of literature in a public high school setting.

Fierstein adapted his play for a feature film, released in 1988. It was directed by Paul Bogart and starred Fierstein (Arnold), Anne Bancroft (Ma Beckoff), Matthew Broderick (Alan), Brian Kerwin (Ed), and Eddie Castrodad (David).

Torch Song Trilogy, written by Harvey Fierstein, and presented by The Barn Players, at The Arts Asylum, 1000 East 9th Street, KCMO, May 31 through June 10. More info at http://www.thebarnplayers.org

29. David Bowie – “Rebel Rebel”
from: A Reality Tour / ISO – Columbia – Legacy / January 25, 2010
[Recorded November 22-23, 2003, Point Theatre, Dublin, Ireland. Originally written for a mooted Ziggy Stardust musical in late 1973, “Rebel Rebel” was Bowie’s last single in the glam rock style that had been his trademark. The song is notable for its gender-bending lyrics (“You got your mother in a whirl / She’s not sure if you’re a boy or a girl”) as well as its distinctive riff, which rock journalist Kris Needs has described as “a classic stick-in-the-head like the Stones’ ‘Satisfaction'”.Transsexual rock artist and former Bowie associate Jayne County claims that “Rebel Rebel” was based in part on County’s own song “Queenage Baby”, which was recorded in January 1974 by Bowie’s Mainman Records, but not released at the time. The song later surfaced on the independent 2006 release Wayne County at the Trucks, and some critics, upon hearing the track, echoed County’s claims. The 2004, live version features David Bowie – vocals, guitars, stylophone, harmonica; Earl Slick – guitar; Gerry Leonard – guitar; Gail Ann Dorsey – bass guitar, backing vocals, lead vocals on “Under Pressure”; Sterling Campbell – drums; Mike Garson – keyboards, piano; Catherine Russell – keyboards, percussion, acoustic guitar, backing vocals. A Reality Tour was a worldwide concert tour by David Bowie in support of the Reality album. The tour commenced on 7 October 7, 2003 at the Forum, Copenhagen, Denmark continuing through Europe, North America, Asia, including a return to New Zealand and Australia for the first time since the 1987 Glass Spider Tour. The tour grossed $46,000,000, making it the ninth-highest grossing tour of 2004. At over 110 shows, the tour was the longest tour of Bowie’s career. Bowie played Kansas City, May 10, 2004, at Starlight Theatre. I was there, seven rows from the stage.]

30. Lou Reed and John Cale – “Small Town”
from: Songs For Drella / Sire – Warner Bros. / 1990
[Dedicated to the memory of Andy Warhol, their mentor, who had died unexpectedly in 1987. Drella was a nickname for Warhol coined by Warhol Superstar Ondine, a contraction of Dracula and Cinderella, used by Warhol’s crowd. The song cycle focuses on Warhol’s interpersonal relations and experiences, with songs falling roughly into three categories: Warhol’s first-person perspective (which makes up the vast majority of the album), third-person narratives chronicling events and affairs, and first-person commentaries on Warhol by Reed and Cale themselves. The songs on the album are, to some extent, in chronological order.]

31. The Smiths – “These Things Take Time”
from: The Sound Of The Smiths [Disc 2] / Rhino UK / November 10, 2008
[“These Things Take Time” (12 “b-side of “What Difference Does It Make?”)Included in Hatful of Hollow. The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. The band consisted of vocalist Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce. Critics have called them one of the most important bands to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s. NME named the Smiths the “most influential artist ever” in a 2002 poll. In 2003, four of the band’s albums appeared on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Based on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Marr, the group signed to the independent record label Rough Trade Records, on which they released four studio albums: The Smiths (1984), Meat Is Murder (1985), The Queen Is Dead (1986) and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987). They have also released several compilations, and numerous non-album singles. They had several singles reach the top twenty of the UK Singles Chart and all four of their studio albums reached the top five of the UK Albums Chart, including Meat Is Murder which hit number one. They won a significant following and remain cult favourites. The band broke up in 1987 due to internal tensions and have turned down several offers to reunite. The band’s focus on a guitar, bass, and drum sound, and their fusion of 1960s rock and post-punk, were a rejection of the then-popular, synthesiser-based dance-pop. Marr’s guitar work, using a Rickenbacker, had a jangle pop sound reminiscent of Roger McGuinn of the Byrds. Morrissey’s complex, literate lyrics combined themes about ordinary people with mordant humour.]

let all and nothing go beyond,
back into

the coffee-clogged drain the red, potted plant

could not recognize
her only son
as time leaves your body behind, how will you know?

unholy beach celebrated among
the dirt and scum of
all we won
all we won with patience

4. Ify Jerry Crusade – “Everybody Like Something Good”
from: Nigeria 70 – Lagos Jump / Strut / May 13, 2008
[Originally released riding a wave of global interest in Afrobeat at the turn of the decade, Strut’s original Nigeria 70 set broke the mould for African compilations when it first surfaced in September 2001. Digging deep into Nigeria’s archives, the collection showcased for the first time on CD the stunning variety of fusions recorded across the country during the ‘70s, from national icons like Fela Kuti and Sunny Ade to lesser known young bands like Monomono and Ofo The Black Company. Across 2CDs, the compilation touches on the many subtle regional variations of the time – from the East, the Igbo groove of The Funkees, from the Hausa North, the Arabic flow of Bala Miller and, from Lagos, the hard-hitting Yoruba soul of Segun Bucknor. The set also made available many rare cuts on CD for the first time including obscure soundtrack ‘The Quest’ by Afro Cult Foundation and one of the most requested DJ tracks on the album, Shina Williams’ hypnotic Afro disco classic, ‘Agboju Logun’.]

5. Graham Central Station – “Happ-E-2-C-U-A-Ginn”
from: Now Do U Wanta Dance / Warner Bros. – Rhino / 1977

6. Graham Central Station – “Now Do U Wanta Dance”
from: Now Do U Wanta Dance / Warner Bros. – Rhino / 1977
[5th album by Graham Central Station, a funk band named after founder Larry Graham (formerly of Sly & the Family Stone). The band’s origins date from when Santana guitarist Neal Schon formed the band Azteca along with Larry Graham (bass guitar) and Gregg Errico (drums), both from Sly & the Family Stone, and Pete Sears (keyboards), from Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. Santana bass guitar player Tom Rutley would move into the bass spot with Azteca. That band, like Santana with heavy Latin influences, would eventually morph into Graham Central Station, while Schon would form Journey. The invention of electric slap bass is attributed by many (including Victor Wooten) to Graham, which influenced many musical genres, such as funk, R&B and disco. GCS’s biggest hit was “Your Love”, which charted at number 9 in 1975. The group also integrated gospel music into their repertoire, and played with the dichotomy between the funk/rock star image and the “sanctified” gospel group image. Some of their recordings feature the Tower of Power horn section. In 2011, Graham Central Station opened for Prince on Prince’s “Welcome 2 America” tour.]

from: Nigeria Disco Funk Special: The Sound of the Underground Lagos Dancefloor 1974-1979 / Soundway Records / Dec. 5, 2008
[Nigeria Disco Funk Special is an amazing collection of heavy dancefloor grooves from urban Lagos in the ‘70s – hot and driving slices of Funk, Disco and Boogie that show just how vibrant the music scene was in one of West Africa’s most populous and culturally diverse cities. In the ‘70s, it wasn’t just James Brown who influenced the musicians playing in the nightspots of Lagos – the loose-structured and elongated jams that he was pioneering in America had been a part of Nigerian music much longer than that. This album is the sound of Cuban-heeled and Micro-minied Lagos youth soaking up the sound of the American discotheque and putting their own inimitable twist on the proceedings.]

About three-fourths of the current Egypt 80 line-up consists of musicians that not only played with Fela Kuti, but often were arrested and harassed alongside the founder of the Afrobeat movement. Music writer Bill Brownlee, a contributing reviewer to The Kansas City Star wrote on his blog “Plastic Sax”: “Far from a musty academic exercise, the Hearts of Darkness convey the spirit, if not the sound, of Kansas City’s heyday. The Hearts of Darkness deserve recognition from the jazz audience because their visceral big band power is the soundtrack to the same exuberant scenes that undoubtedly accompanied the bands of Benny Moten, Harlan Leonard and Count Basie.”

11:00 – Guest Host & Producer Philip blue owl Hooser

6. Hugh Jackman – “Everything Old Is New Again”
from: The Boy From Oz Original Cast Recording / Decca / 2003

Philip explained that he intended to be like a stripper for our listening audience. Peeling away layers so we can see all that can legally be seen… over the radio. Philip is involved in a project called “The New Century Follies,” which will premiere April 6th in this still-new Century… at the Folly Theatre. When Philip first moved to Kansas City, there was a large-scale effort to restore and reopen the Folly. The Folly become a kind of symbol of Kansas City for him, in a way, his mental folly.

BUT WHAT IS this word “Folly”? It can mean the state or quality of being foolish, of lacking understanding or sense. It can be a costly undertaking, or a whimsical building. In the world of the theatre, it is also a theatrical revue. For those of us in Kansas City, of course, it is all those things in a different order– a theatrical building that proved a costly undertaking to restore in order to bring some very foolish goings-on to the stage.

But it wasn’t always that way. I mean, of course, it wasn’t always known as The Folly. It used to be something … more Standard. Maestro, a little traveling music, if you please….

7. Scott Joplin – “The Entertainer”
from: The Entertainer / Shout Factory Records / Jan. 10, 2003

The Folly Theatre

Philip talked about the Architect, of the Folly Theatre, Louis Curtiss, who was described as “the Frank Lloyd Wright of Kansas City” who was born in Canada, studied architecture at the University of Toronto and in Paris before coming to Kansas City. There are still about 30 buildings he designed in the area, including the Boley Building, at the corner of 12th and Grand — “one of the first glass curtain-wall structures in the world.”

Philip welcomed special guests: Felicia Hardison Londre of UMKC, Gale Tallis the Executive Director of the Folly, and Steve Irwin the Folly’s Development Director.

Felicia Hardison Londre is the Curators’ Professor of Theatre at the UMKC and Honorary Co-Founder of the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. Dr. Londré has taught at UMKC since 1978, with visiting professorships at Hosei University, Tokyo; Marquette University, Milwaukee; and lecture tours to universities in Hungary and France, including the Sorbonne. She often lectures on the Shakespeare authorship question and on Kansas City theatre history, and can be seen this summer at the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. Among Felicia Londré’s fourteen books are Words at Play: Creative Writing and Dramaturgy, as well as books on playwrights: Tennessee Williams and Tom Stoppard. Her most important book is “The Enchanted Years of the Stage: Kansas City at the Crossroads of American Theater,” 1870-1929 (University of Missouri Press, 2007, 83 illustrations), which every Kansas Citian needs to read. It was awarded the Theatre Library Association’s George Freedley Memorial Award at Lincoln Center in New York and Jackson County Historical Society’s Education Award.

The Folly wasn’t always known as the Folly.

Throughout the years (1900-1932) The Folly was known as: The Standard, The Century, The Lyric, The Century again, and Shubert’s Missouri.

The Folly offered, “Refined Musical Extravaganza, Musical Novelties, and Polite Farce,” and also… boxing. But no smoking, originally.

Colonel Edward Butler of St. Louis, MO built The Folly at a cost of $250,000 for his son to present shows on the Empire vaudeville circuit.

A 1901 fire at the nearby Coates Opera House caused opera and comic opera performances to be moved to the Standard, featuring such performers as Sarah Bernhardt, Richard Mansfield and Maude Adams.

The theater’s name changed to the “Century” in 1902. The Century featured acts from the Empire burlesque circuit, including Al Jolson, Fannie Brice and Eddie Foy. In addition to theater acts, the Century featured prizefighting and wrestling, with appearances by Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey.

Felicia discussed Kansas City’s place in US entertainment during this period.

Philip and guests talked about vaudeville, where each performance was made up of a series of separate, unrelated acts grouped together on a common bill. Types of acts included popular and classical musicians, dancers, comedians, trained animals, magicians, female and male impersonators, acrobats, illustrated songs, jugglers, one-act plays or scenes from plays, athletes, lecturing celebrities, minstrels, and movies.

Philip and guests talked about vaudeville fading, legit theatre and light opera, and the Depression.

The Shubert brothers bought the Century in 1923 and renamed it “Shubert’s Missouri” after extensive renovations by Shubert architect Herbert J. Krapp. The Shuberts booked dramatic productions including Shakespeare and O’Neill plays.

The Marx Brothers performed “I’ll Say She Is” for three weeks in 1923-24, the long run convinced the Shuberts to continue operating the theater. “I’ll Say She Is” led to the Marx Brothers’ rise out of vaudeville into stardom in the Broadway theatre and later in motion pictures, and came at a time when they had gotten themselves effectively banned from the major vaudeville circuits.

After 1928 business fell off and the theater was used for touring shows on an intermittent basis until it closed in 1932.

11:21 – Part two of Philip’s interview with Felicia Londre, Gale Tallis, and Steve Irwin

Philip and guests talked about how The Folly was reborn as the Folly!

Philip and guests talked about the theatrical definition of “burlesque” and its relationship to burlesque dance. Felicia discussed how burlesque was originally a parody or comically exaggerated imitation of something, especially in a literary or dramatic work. Burlesque overlaps in meaning with caricature, parody and travesty, and, in its theatrical sense, with extravaganza, as presented during the Victorian era.

While burlesque went out of fashion in England towards the end of the 19th century, to be replaced by Edwardian musical comedy, the American style of burlesque flourished, but with increasing focus on female nudity. Exotic “cooch” dances were brought in, ostensibly Syrian in origin. The entertainments were given in clubs and cabarets, as well as music halls and theatres. By the early 20th century, there were two national circuits of burlesque shows competing with the vaudeville circuit, as well as resident companies in NYC, such as Minsky’s at Winter Garden.

Philip and guests talked about how burlesque was a sensation and brought to America from Britain in the late 1860s by Lydia Thompson and her British Blondes, a troupe who spoofed traditional theatrical productions and featured ladies performing men’s roles, in costumes considered revealing for the time period.

American burlesque soon assimilated music hall, minstrel shows, striptease, comedy and cabaret style to evolve from the follies of the twenties and thirties to the girlie shows of the 40s and 50s, which eventually gave way to the modern strip club. The striptease element of burlesque became subject to extensive local legislation, leading to a theatrical form that titillated without falling foul of censors.

By the late 1930s, a social crackdown on burlesque shows began their gradual decline. The shows had slowly changed from ensemble ribald variety performances, to simple performances focusing mostly on the striptease.

In New York, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia clamped down on burlesque, effectively putting it out of business by the early 1940s. Burlesque lingered on elsewhere in the U.S., increasingly neglected, and by the 1970s, with nudity commonplace in theatres, American burlesque reached “its final shabby demise.”

Philip and guests talked about how audiences generally preferred their local talent, including: the World’s Tallest Exotic, Miss Perpetual Motion, Marie Antoinette, Russian Girl Cossack

Other theaters converted to movies, but the Folly specialized.

Gale talked about the Ghosts that haunt the Folly. After the theatre was restored to it’s original state, employees and visitors alike report strange happenings in and around the theater. Many have seen a mysterious male figure in a bowler hat, who is believed to be the ghost of Joe Donegan. Others have also seen a woman in a long, flowing gown rushing toward the stage.

Philip and guests talked about the decline of downtown and once again, the Folly was forced to close.

Following the Folly’s listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, a “Strip the Folly” fundraiser was held featuring Sally Rand, who had performed at the Folly. After seven years a full renovation was completed in 1981, including the construction of an annex on the site of the former Edward Hotel.

A new lobby, restrooms and second-floor Shareholders’ Room were added. The auditorium’s original color scheme was restored. Plans are now under way, and approval has been granted by the Kansas City Landmarks Commission, to install a marquee sign that closely mimics the original Folly signage.

The Folly Theater is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation whose mission is “to preserve Kansas City’s oldest historic theater as a premier performance venue by presenting, producing and hosting a wide range of quality events for the community”. The Folly produces a Jazz Series, a Kids Series, and Cyprus Avenue Live! performances by artists ranging from blues to rock and country. It hosts the Harriman-Jewell Series of classical performers, the Friends of Chamber Music series, and the Heartland Men’s Chorus.

11:38 – Interview with Annie Cherry, Damian Blake, Daisy Bucket

Damian Blake and Annie Cherry

At the age of six, Annie Cherry mortified her mother in a high-end department store by belting, at the top of her lungs, Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” That’s surely the kind of chutzpah that got Annie Cherry into the Kansas City Middle School of the Arts and high school at Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. She is an actress, vocalist, burlesque and belly dancer, vaudeville performer, and pin-up vixen. Annie can most often be seen performing with the Kansas City Society of Burlesque.

Damian Blake, is a man of a thousand faces… or at least a good dozen. At the tender age of three, his fate was set when he saw the Charlie Chaplin movie “The Gold Rush” and became obsessed with clowning and silent film, and most importantly, Chaplin himself. Using the skills he honed as a sideshow/variety performer, Damian has appeared on stage, in print, on film, as a variety entertain, a character actor, and celebrity impersonator. He also appears regularly and quite successfully at the Fishtank Performance Space with Arty Vulgaris.

Spencer Brown aka Daisy Bucket

Daisy Buckët aka Spencer Brown took to the spotlight in The Girly Show at Bar Natasha in 2006. Since then, she has been a force to be reckoned wit, with awards including the Pitch’s “Best Cabaret Show 2007”, “Best Vocalist 2008” Zoey Award), she was crowned Queen of Kansas City Gay Pride 2008, and ran a year-long drag variety show at Sidekicks Saloon known as Daisy’s Twilight Madness. When she’s not supporting local charities like the AIDS Service Foundation of Greater Kansas City, and Passages LGBT Youth Center, she is touring the country disguised as Trampolina in the Kinsey Sicks, America’s Favorite Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet. Spencer brown also wrote and starred in the “The Rose: A Rock Tragedy” produced at La Esquina here in Kansas City.

Philip and guests talked about how like the Folly, Burlesque has re-invented itself. The “New Burlesque” movement, is the revival and updating of the traditional burlesque performance. Though based on the traditional Burlesque art, the new form encompasses a wider range of performance styles; anything from classic striptease to modern dance to theatrical mini-dramas to comedic mayhem. As with the earlier burlesque, neo-burlesque is more focused on the “tease” in “striptease” than the “strip”. Audiences for neo-burlesque shows tend to be mixed gender, age, race, and class.

Modern burlesque has taken many on forms, but it has the common trait of honoring one or more of burlesque’s previous incarnations. The acts tend to put emphasis on style and are sexy rather than sexual. A typical burlesque act may include striptease, expensive or garish costumes, bawdy humor, cabaret and more. Unlike strippers who dance in strip clubs to make a living, burlesque performers often perform for fun and spend more money on costumes, rehearsal, and props than they are compensated.

The New Century Follies

The New Century Follies begins April 6th and continues every month. Bandleader Brad Cox provides the soundtrack with The People’s Liberation Big Band, with a FULL BAR, and the rotating lineup includes performers such as Annie Cherry, Damian Blake, Alex Espy, Jason Divad, Violet Vendetta, Opal Malone, Phillip Hoosier, Voler Aerial Acrobats, Sweet Louise, Daisy Bucket, Ruby von Blush, Vlad Fortuna, and many, many more!

Expect jugglers, hoopers, aerial acrobats, burlesque gals and guys, big musical numbers, authentic vaudeville style skits, comics, special out-of-town guests, magic, and other bits of business!

No advance tickets, no fuss, just come as you are, pay a modest cover charge, and enjoy with your friends. Celebrate the New Century!
