We’ll play music from Kansas City’s Gamelan Genta Kasturi, led by Patrick Alonzo Conway, and we’ll also hear from Black House Improvisors’ Collective led by Russell Thorpe. At 11:00 we welcome Mark Titus to Wednesday MidDay Medley as our Guest DJ for our second hour! Mark Titus will share music from the Pembroke Hill Glee Club from 1968, where he was a student from 1955 to 1967. Mark will play music from DMZ, the Boston based punk band that Mark was associated with with for 3 years in the mid 1970s. Mark will also play music from the KC Chorale in Kirkwood Hall. Mark will share stories of his journeys.

Kip Niven recently appeared in the Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s production of August: Osage County. He has appeared on Broadway, Off Broadway, in regional theatres,, features films, network television and comercials. In Kansas City he has appeared at Starlight Theatre, New Theatre Restaurant, The Coterie Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, Musical Theatre Heritage, and Kansas City Actor’s Theatre. Kip is projext coordinator for EARTh, Equity Actors Readers Theatre, and serves as vice president of Equity’s Kansas City Area Liasion Committee. Kip Niven plays Henry in Spinning Tree Theatre’s new production of “The Fantasticks.”

Julie Shaw is know for brinbging down the house in musical numbers performed at The Quality Hill Playhouse. She has worked on stage in productions at The Unicorn Theatre, Chestnut Fine Arts Center, Musical Theatre Heritage, The Coterie and The Folly. This summer Julie will star in The Coterie Theatre’s production of “Once Upon A Mattress.” Julie Shaw plays Hucklebee in Spinning Tree Theatre’s new production of “The Fantasticks” running May 10 thru 27, Thursdays, Friday, Saturdays at 8:00 PM, and Sundays at 2:00 PM, at Crown Center Off Center Theatre (Level 3) 2450 Grand Blvd. KCMO. The Fantasticks premiered at the Sullivan Street Playhouse, a small off-Broadway theatre in New York City’s Greenwich Village, on May 3, 1960. The production closed on January 13, 2002, after 17,162 performances. It is the world’s longest-running musical and the longest-running uninterrupted show of any kind in the United States. Does it feel like theatrical royalty being part of this little show. 42 years is a long run, to what do you credit to the long life of this show?

With music by Harvey Schmidt, lyrics by Tom Jones, The Spinning Tree Theatre’s production features Jakob Wozniak as the pianist and Associate Musical Director, Peggy Friesen on Harp, w/ Krista Lang Blackwood as Musical Director, Resident M.D. of Spinning Tree Theatre. Most know the song, “Try To Remember.”

The Fantasticks tells an allegorical story, loosely based on the play “The Romancers” (“Les Romanesques”) by Edmond Rostand, concerning two neighboring fathers who trick their children, Luisa and Matt, into falling in love by pretending to feud and erecting a wall between their houses. The fathers then hire traveling actors to stage a mock abduction, so that Matt can heroically seem to save Luisa, settling the supposed feud and securing their fathers’ blessings (which the young lovers have really had all along). When the children discover the deception, they reject the arranged love match and separate. Each then gains disillusioning experiences of the real world, seen in parallel fantasy sequences. They return to each other bruised but enlightened, and they renew their vows with more maturity.
Elements of the play are also drawn from the story of Pyramus and Thisbe, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore.

Jesse wrote in his blog that this “whole thing started in March, 2010, when you wrote “I Guess I’ll Never Know” while driving home from a show in Columbia, MO.

Jason Vivone is the former Kansas City Blues Society’s International Blues Challenge solo winner. His band the Billy Bats were crowned KINGS OF THE ROOTS at the showdown at the Blue Note in Columbia, Missouri. In an annual event held by the Missouri Lottery and the Roots and BBQ fest, the Billy Bats beat out three other bands with their soulful, energetic live show.

Jason was with us last November, not long after he had been in a car accident that injured his head, back, and neck. He was still recovering, then, and is still on the mend.

Sasha Banks in Overground Magazine wrote, “When The Clementines hit the stage, they pretty much set the benchmark for excellence. Classically trained guitarists, with an alternative folk style with strong, sultry vocals, this duo did nothing short of completely shaking The Brick to the ground.” Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer, are The Clementines, and they will play The Riot Room, tonight Wednesday, April 25, at 8:00 PM. They also play Jerry’s Bait Shop on Monday, April 30.

Tim & Nicole were introduced by a mutual friend, Craig, in late February of 2011.

The Clementines have been together since last February, when Springer put out a Craigslist ad seeking a musical collaborator. She received a number of responses but was most impressed by Jenkins. (“I’ve been playing for about 12 years but mostly just in garage bands that never left the garage,” Jenkins says.) They met and clicked, and in April they started gigging regularly at local open-mic nights. Since that time, they have written over 20 songs and have even recorded a demo.

The Clementines, music is labeled: acoustic alt. rock, blues, jazz, & folk-pop.

The Clementines, get their name from the main character in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, Missouri, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, Missouri, and studied Special Education with Music at Metropolitan MO CC, in KCMO.

Nicole told The Pitch (in a Jan. 10, 2012 article): “I grew up singing in gospel choirs, in Oak Grove,” she says. “And I still love gospel music, though I’m not religious or anything. I did musicals throughout high school, and I went to school for a year at Missouri State for music education. But I’ve never been in a committed band before this one.”

Nicole told David Hudnall of The Pitch: (her) vision for the Clementines was initially inspired by the Irish folk duo the Swell Season. “I had just seen them in concert before I put up that ad,” Springer says. “They’re just so passionate, and I wanted to do something that had that much soul in it. It’s the same reason I like Aretha or the Gossip.”

Tim Jenkins grew up in KC. Studied at UMKC. He has been playing music for over 12 years.

From David Hudnall’s article in The Pitch: Jenkins, a fan of “geek rock, like ’70s prog stuff,” brought a different sensibility to the table.

“I usually bring in a song,” Springer says, “and Tim will tweak it and add solos and sometimes a riff ― he helps complete it.” “I think we know what our strong suits are,” Jenkins says. “Nicole’s voice is the main draw. And we try to mix that with a blues-folk sound that has a little pop sensibility.”

The highest bidder at the end of each segment received a 2-hour concert for their upcoming birthday, anniversary, block party, Quinceanera, company picnic, or bar mitzvah. The LIKEME Lighthouse will serve as a voice for the LGBT community in the Midwest.

Lighthouse comes fully equipped with resources, staff, counselors and a sense of community and safety. Within the Lighthouse, the Community Center provides resources on such topics as the coming out process, gender identity, bullying and other issues the LGBT community faces.

Char and Mark discussed the Grand Opening Weekend of the LikeMe Lighthouse that included sold out events featuring a documentary premiere and a concert featuring Kristie Stremel, Jennifer Knapp, Tracy Ryerson, Stamie Karakasidis, Hal Sparks, Chely Wright, Alan Cumming, Jeff Parshley, Adam Bouska and Thomas Roberts who all came to Kansas City to support the LIKEME Lighthouse.

Char discussed the facilities of The LikeMe Lighthouse that include a Gallery, Library, a Cyber Center, Meeting rooms, a Welcome Center, with more to come.

LikeMe offers scholarships for area LGBT graduating seniors, who are heading off to college this fall. Applications are due May 31.

LikeMe Lighthouse is currently training new volunteers.

The 5th annual Record Store Day will take place on Sat, April 21. Record Store Day is an internationally celebrated day observed the 3rd Saturday of April each year. Its purpose is to celebrate the art of music. The day brings together fans, artists, and nearly 1000 independently owned record stores in the United States, along with hundreds of independent record stores across the world.

Joining us to talk about Record Store day are : Nathan Reusch of The Record Machine, Jerad Tomasino & Ross Brown of Golden Sound Records, & Coleen Shaw-Voeks of Vinyl Renaissance. We’ll play new music from: Akkilles, La Guerre, The Empty Spaces, Spirit Is The Spirit, Fullbloods, Millions of Boys, Baseball Project, The Sexy Accident, and Kimbra.

Coleen Shaw-Voeks has been working in record stores for over 15 years. She was formerly the owner of Need More Discs with her husband, musician Erik Voeks. Needmore Discs operated for 6 years in Shawnee, Kansas for 6 years before closing in August of 2009. Coleen is currently the manager at Vinyl Renaissance on West 39th Street in Kansas City. Coleen is also a distance runner and a running coach and prefer to spend my free time running through the woods.

Record Store Day was created for places just like Vinyl Renaissance.

Coleen brought in new music that will be released for Record Store Day.

Ross Brown & Jerad Tomasino are two of the founders (w/ Mat Shoare) of Golden Sound Records. Ross grew up in West rural Olathe. Jerad Tomasino moved around a lot growing up but spent some of his high school years living in Omaha. Jerad and Ross talked about their new Golden Sound Records, 12″ vinyl split release with The Record Machine, It is called “Secret Handshakes” and includes 6 tracks featuring Golden Sound Records artists and 6 tracks featuring The Record Machine artists, all created especially for Record Store Day!

Jerad Tomasino & Ross Brown brought in new music from Ross’s band Fullbloods, for us to feature.

Nathan Reusch is co-founder and manager of The Record Machine, an Independent KC based record label, founded in 2003. With Chris Haghirian, Nathan is the co-mastermind, of The Middle of The Map Festival, held last weekend that included over 100 Bands, in 8 Venues, on 10 Stages, in 3 Days.

Nathan, reported that over 6000 people attended The Middle of The Map Festival this year.
