1. David Bowie – “Dancing Out In Space”

[Bowie’s first new music in 10 years. In the works for over 2 years, Bowie is collaborated with longtime producer Tony Visconti who told the BBC that they worked on the new album at a very slow pace. “We never spent more than two to three weeks at a time recording,” Visconti said. “And then we’d take off as much as two months. We’d usually work on one or two songs in an afternoon and we’d whip them up to shape where they’d sound like great rock tracks. At that point there wouldn’t be any final vocals or lyrics. This is the same way I’d been working with him since The Man Who Sold the World. He hasn’t really changed in his approach.” Toward the end of Bowie’s 2004 tour in Europe the singer underwent emergency heart surgery for a blocked artery. There were rumors about Bowie’s health. Visconti told the BBC “He’s a very healthy man… I couldn’t explain how I know that, but I worked with a very healthy David Bowie in the studio and a very happy David Bowie in the studio.”]

Since 2009 Tommy Donoho has been a singer guitarist songwriter for the band Dollar Fox. In 2010 he also became the lead guitarist for The Hillary Watts Riot. In 2011 he co-founded Money Wolf Music a new Kansas City record label that has released music from alacartoona, The Rumblejetts, Hillary Watts Riot, The Peculiar Pretzelmen, and more. Tommy also performs as a solo artist.

Christian Hankel has been a guest on this radio show representing his early 1990s band Mongol Beach Party and his current bands alacartoona, and Hillary Watts Riot. Christian is a composer, singer, bassist, actor, playwright, producer, programmer, dad, and organizer. Christian has been a co-creator of original theatrical performance pieces “The Oil Boiler” staged at The Living Room, and the 2009 film “The Night is the Mirror.” Christian was seen in last year’s Fringe Festival in Sexing Hitler, and is a founder of the performance collective The Monocle.

On day 1 of The HomeGuard Festival, on Thursday, March 14, singer/songwriter Sam Baker will be playing a special intimate house concert. Christian discussed how it was his girlfriend Catherine Tronnes who introduced him to the music of Sam Baker. Catherine then called Sam Baker on the phone to ask him if he would come to KC.

Sam Baker is working on a new full-length recording to be released this year.

Tommy discussed how Money Wolf Music came to be, and how this year they will be releasing their 20th recording.

In the last 5 years we’ve seen the development of The Record Machine, Golden Sound Records, Money Wolf Music, Sharp County Records, Saunders Street Records, High Dive Records. Area bands are taking control of their own destiny. It is a whole new world.

Tommy discussed the upcoming Money Wolf Music MWR014 vinyl release series. The Peculiar Pretzelmen, Jason Beers, The Hillary Watts Riot, Kevin Seconds, Dead Ven. There will probably be less than 20 of any of these albums pressed and then they’re gone for good.

[Paul Draper makes his debut as a leader on this recording. He spent his life as a sideman on countless recordings and tours beginning in 1964 playing Farfisa keyboard with the show/review band the Shampells. This record was produced by his son, professional Kansas City-based musician, Brandon Draper. The two have been sharing the stage since Brandon was 9 years old. Paul has been stealing the spotlight for years with his Hammond Organ skills and stage presence, AKA “The Wildman” as he was aptly named years ago for his energy and spirit. This recording features a vast array of styles of funk, blues, R&B, soul, country, and jazz, all with uplifting lyrical content. The instruments used were all vintage and there was no cutting corners on getting the right sounds spending 5 years to complete.]

19. Denison Witmer – “Keep Moving Brother, Keep Moving Sister”

[Ninth release from the singwr songwriter who has been recording for 15 years now. Hoping to print a hundred or so copies of his first CD, Safe Away (1998), a teenaged Denison found himself stuck with ten times that many, and went on his first tour in an attempt to keep the extras from going to waste. He sold the whole thousand, including one copy that found its way into the hands of the Burnt Toast Vinyl label, and a recording project intended for a tiny audience turned into a full-fledged album release.]

[Originally from Kansas City, Missouri and now based in Nashville, Tennessee. In his twenties Black began performing at Blayney’s, where he also worked as a bouncer. Soon Black began touring and eventually relocated to Nashville, Tennessee where he met, among others, Iris DeMent (Black lends some backing vocals on DeMent’s 1992 debut album, Infamous Angel). His writings have been described as “impressionistic songs that are smart without forgetting the emotional undercurrent.” His songs have been covered by Waylon Jennings, Sam Bush and BlackHawk. BlackHawk’s cover of Black’s song, “That’s Just About Right,” was a Top 10 Country single in 1994. Since then Black has released many of his own solo albums and tours widely. He also maintains his own free weekly podcast, Black Tuesdays.]

Guest Producer & Co-Host: Bill Belzer

Bill Belzer has been playing music in Kansas City since the late 1980s. Early bands include: Mongol Beach Party and Grumpy. Bill toured with Uncle Tupelo, Michelle Shocked, and many others. Bill has played drums with many of Matt Pryor’s projects including, The New Amsterdams. Bill also performs as a solo singer songwriter and recently released a solo EP of his own songs. Bill currently records and performs with the bands: LAZY, The Sleazebeats, and Ghosty.

1. Woods – “Pushing Onlys”

[American folk rock band from Brooklyn, which formed in 2005. The band’s membership now includes singer-guitarist Jeremy Earl, tape-effects technician G. Lucas Crane, bassist Kevin Morby, and multi-instrumentalist Jarvis Taveniere. Woods have released five albums, the latest being Bend Beyond.Pitchfork Media reviewed one of their previous albums, Songs of Shame, giving the band its “Best New Music” designation and described the sound as “a distinctive blend of spooky campfire folk, lo-fi rock, homemade tape collages, and other noisy interludes, all anchored by deceptively sturdy melodies.”Singer-guitarist and founder Jeremy Earl also runs the rising Brooklyn label Woodsist, for whom the band releases their work.]

2. Parquet Courts – “Borrowed Time”

[American punk rock band based in Brooklyn, New York, that formed in late 2010. The band consists of Andrew Savage (lead vocals, guitar), Austin Brown (guitar), Sean Yeaton (bass), and Andrew’s brother Max Savage (drums). The band released their debut album, American Specialties, on a limited cassette release (later released on LP by Play Pinball! Records). This was followed by the full length album, Light Up Gold, which was initially released on Savage’s Dull Tools label and later reissued on What’s Your Rupture? in 2013. Light Up Gold received acclaim in both the DIY underground and mainstream rock press.]

[Shawn Lee is an musician and multi-instrumentalist from Wichita, KS. AM is a songwriter, musician, composer and producer born in Tulsa, OK, raised in New Orleans, and currently residing in the LA’s Echo Park neighborhood in California. AM has had over 100 songs featured in TV shows and movies. AM & Shawn Lee’s debut album Celestial Electric was released to the world in 2012. Their 2nd album La Musique Numerique will be released in 2013.]

[Originally released riding a wave of global interest in Afrobeat at the turn of the decade, Strut’s original Nigeria 70 set broke the mould for African compilations when it first surfaced in September 2001. Digging deep into Nigeria’s archives, the collection showcased for the first time on CD the stunning variety of fusions recorded across the country during the ‘70s, from national icons like Fela Kuti and Sunny Ade to lesser known young bands like Monomono and Ofo The Black Company. Across 2CDs, the compilation touches on the many subtle regional variations of the time – from the East, the Igbo groove of The Funkees, from the Hausa North, the Arabic flow of Bala Miller and, from Lagos, the hard-hitting Yoruba soul of Segun Bucknor. The set also made available many rare cuts on CD for the first time including obscure soundtrack ‘The Quest’ by Afro Cult Foundation and one of the most requested DJ tracks on the album, Shina Williams’ hypnotic Afro disco classic, ‘Agboju Logun’.]

[5th album by Graham Central Station, a funk band named after founder Larry Graham (formerly of Sly & the Family Stone). The band’s origins date from when Santana guitarist Neal Schon formed the band Azteca along with Larry Graham (bass guitar) and Gregg Errico (drums), both from Sly & the Family Stone, and Pete Sears (keyboards), from Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. Santana bass guitar player Tom Rutley would move into the bass spot with Azteca. That band, like Santana with heavy Latin influences, would eventually morph into Graham Central Station, while Schon would form Journey. The invention of electric slap bass is attributed by many (including Victor Wooten) to Graham, which influenced many musical genres, such as funk, R&B and disco. GCS’s biggest hit was “Your Love”, which charted at number 9 in 1975. The group also integrated gospel music into their repertoire, and played with the dichotomy between the funk/rock star image and the “sanctified” gospel group image. Some of their recordings feature the Tower of Power horn section. In 2011, Graham Central Station opened for Prince on Prince’s “Welcome 2 America” tour.]

[Originally from LA he is the child of a former music business executive and a former Broadway actress. In 1991, he appeared in the Sonic Youth video “Cinderella’s Big Score” by Dave Markey. Cohen has been a contributing member of The Curtains, Cryptacize, Deerhoof, Natural Dreamers, and Park Detail’s Band. He has also toured as a member of White Magic, Cass McCombs, Haunted Graffiti and Danielson.]

8. The New Amsterdams – “Without a Second (Eleanor)”

[Lawrence based musician Matt Pryor is the singer songwriter for The Get Up Kids, formed in 1995, and The New Amsterdams formed in 2000. The band’s current lineup, includes: Bill Belzer on drums, Eric McCann on upright bass, and Dustin Kinsey on guitar. Matt’s “alter-ego” band The Terrible Twos, released the children’s album “If You Ever See an Owl” in 2006. Matt also releases music as a solo artist. His second solo full-length, “May Day” was released January 2012. [American jazz and pop vocal quartet of the 20th century who made more than 2,000 recordings that combined sold more than 50 million copies, and garnered at least three dozen gold records. The Mills Brothers were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998. The group was originally composed of four brothers born in Piqua, Ohio, 25 miles (40 km) north of Dayton: John Jr. (October 19, 1910[1] – January 23, 1936) bass vocalist and guitarist, Herbert (April 2, 1912 – April 12, 1989) tenor, Harry (August 9, 1913 – June 28, 1982) baritone, and Donald (April 29, 1915 – November 13, 1999) lead tenor. Their parents were John Hutchinson (February 11, 1882 – December 8, 1967) and Eathel Mills.]

11. Laura Nyro – “Sweet Blindness”

[Follow up to her 1967 debut More Than a New Discovery. Three Dog Night took “Eli’s Comin'” to No. 10, while The 5th Dimension went to No. 3 with “Stoned Soul Picnic” and No. 13 with “Sweet Blindness”. Six songs from Eli and the Thirteenth Confession are included in the ballet Quintet performed by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Laura Nyro was born Oct. 18, 1947 – and died April 8, 1997. A songwriter, singer, and pianist, her style was a hybrid of Brill Building-style NYC pop, jazz, gospel, R&B, show tunes, rock and soul. In 2012, Laura Nyro was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.]

12. Michael Jackson – “Workin’ Day and Night (Original Demo)”

[5th studio album, released on Epic Records, after Jackson’s critically well-received film performance in The Wiz Jackson and Quincy Jones had become friends, and Jones agreed to work with Jackson on his next studio album. Jackson collaborated with a number of other writers and performers such as Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Rod Temperton. Five singles were released from the album. Three of the singles had music videos released. Jackson wrote three of the songs himself, including the Platinum-certified lead single, “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough”. It was his first solo release under Epic Records, the label he would record on until his death in 2009. Several critics observed that Off the Wall was crafted from funk, disco-pop, soft rock, jazz and pop ballads. The record won the singer his first Grammy Award since the early 1970s. With Off the Wall, Jackson became the first solo artist to have four singles from the same album peak inside the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The album was a commercial success; to date it is certified for 8× Multi-Platinum in the US and has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best selling albums of all time.]

13. Bobby Charles – “Grow Too Old”

[Born as Robert Charles Guidry in Abbeville, Louisiana and grew up listening to Cajun music. At the age of 15, he heard Fats Domino, and that “changed (his) life forever.” Charles helped to pioneer the south Louisiana musical genre known as swamp pop. His compositions include the hits “See You Later, Alligator”, which he initially recorded himself as “Later Alligator”, and “Walking to New Orleans”, written for Fats Domino. Because of his south Louisiana-influenced R&B vocal style, Charles has often been thought to be black, when in fact he is white. On November 26, 1976, Charles was invited to play with The Band at their farewell concert, The Last Waltz. Charles played “Down South in New Orleans”, with the help of Dr. John and The Band. He co-wrote the song “Small Town Talk” with Rick Danko of The Band. “Promises, Promises (The Truth Will Set You Free)” was co-written with Willie Nelson. Charles died on January 14, 2010.]

[English pop/rock band, formed in 1979 in Kirkby, near Liverpool, with a core of vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon. Their output was pop music similar in style to that of New Wave but with strong similarities to the post-punk movement of the early 1980s, namely inclusion of a broader range of musical influences and occasional flirtation with political commentary. Throughout their career, China Crisis had ten hit singles between August 1982 and January 1987 and six albums, as well as commercial success in Western Europe, Australia and the Americas.]

In the ‘70s, it wasn’t just James Brown who influenced the musicians playing in the nightspots of Lagos – the loose-structured and elongated jams that he was pioneering in America had been a part of Nigerian music much longer than that. This album is the sound of Cuban-heeled and Micro-minied Lagos youth soaking up the sound of the American discotheque and putting their own inimitable twist on the proceedings.]

Parker played guitar, featuring his distinctive spacey, phased guitar sound with Prochet’s dreamy vocals, and also produced the album.]

[Debut release from Rhye, a musical duo based in Los Angeles, California, made up of: Mike Milosh, from Canada, and Robin Hannibal, from Denmark. Milosh had previously released albums as Milosh, and Hannibal had previously recorded as Quadron. Recorded in Copenhagen and Los Angeles, their sound brings together elements of their modern cultural aesthetics mixed with an homage to classic sensibilities; lush strings and melodies intertwined with simple electronic production and soft and sultry vocals – a marriage between refined decadence and modern elegance.

[James Victor “Vic” Chesnutt (Nov. 12, 1964 – Dec. 25, 2009) a singer-songwriter from Athens, Georgia. His first album, Little, was released in 1990, but his breakthrough to commercial success didn’t come until 1996 with the release of Sweet Relief II: Gravity of the Situation, a tribute album of mainstream artists covering his songs. Chesnutt released 17 albums during his career, including two produced by Michael Stipe, and a 1996 release on Capitol Records, About to Choke. His musical style has been described as a “skewed, refracted version of Americana that is haunting, funny, poignant, and occasionally mystical, usually all at once”. Injuries from a 1983 car accident left him partially paralyzed; he used a wheelchair and had limited use of his hands.]

Bill Belzer has been playing music in Kansas City since the late 1980s. Early bands include: Mongol Beach Party and Grumpy. Bill toured with Uncle Tupelo and many others. Bill has played drums with many of Matt Pryor’s projects including, The New Amsterdams. Bill also performs as a solo singer songwriter and recently released a solo EP of his own songs. Bill currently records and performs with the bands: LAZY, The Sleazebeats, and Ghosty.

On Tuesday, February 19, a huge natural-gas explosion, in Kansas City’s west edge of the Country Club Plaza, destroyed the beloved restaurant JJ’s, reducing the area to a crater. 16 people were injured, including many JJ’s employees.

One JJ’s server, Megan Cramer, was killed in the blast. Megan Cramer had lived here in KC for over 26 years. She received her law degree from UMKC and started one of UMKC’s very first LGBT Student groups. As well as working with KC Human Rights Ordinance Project in the early 1990s, Megan was active in many other equality projects. Megan will be greatly missed by her Family from Springfield MO, and by her JJ’s Family, and all of us in the KC LGBT & Allied Communities, who have known and admired Megan for many years. A memorial service for Megan Cramer will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, March 4, at Community Christian Church, 4601 Main St., Kansas City, MO.

After five years of being nominated, The ACB’s won the 2012 Pitch Music Award for Best Pop Band. Their songs have been featured on MTV’s The Inbetweeners, and on Daytrotter. Their lead single, “Ocean,” released in late 2012, moved Popmatters to declare The ACB’s as one of its “Best Hopes to Break Out in 2013.” The ACB’s play a Record Release Show, Fri, Mar. 1, 7:00 PM, at recordBar, 1020 Westport Rd, with Fourth Of July. The ACB’s formed in 2006 in KC. In 2007 they released their self titled solo debut, went on tour, and played with The Get Up Kids, Republic Tigers. Music Editor of The Pitch, David Hudnall wrote: ‘The ACBs began 2010 as a broken band, but closed out the year as a super -group of sorts. After half the band moved to L.A., frontman Konnor Ervin & bassist Bryan McGuire regrouped, adding Andrew Connor from Ghosty and Kyle Rausch from Abracadabras. They released their first album in 4 years. On Stona Rosa, the ACBs moved beyond the power pop sound they’d cultivated on their debut and settled into a stranger, stonier, lonelier space. Ervin’s couching his inventive melodies in more tender, artful compositions, and the band has the chops & confidence to sell it. It’s a good look on them.’

Andrew Connor’s band Ghosty recorded one of our favorite releases of 2012.
Even though they weren’t officially released, the demos of Kyle’s band The I’ms, now known as Shy Boys, were included in our top ten Best Recordings of 2011.

Little Leaves, The ACBs 3rd full-length was inspired by Connor Ervin’s landscaping job.

Mark read from biographical information on The ACB’s where it was written that the band is influenced by the music of Michael Jackson, early Beatles, Matthew Sweet, and modern bands: Wolfdeerhorse and Bear Eyes.

The information went on to talk about how the The ACB’s are also influenced by an inability to interact comfortably with the opposite sex, fear of hair loss, male friendships that have been described by outsiders as bordering on homoerotic, and the lingering effects of their deeply Midwestern religious upbringing.

Konnor talked about his process of song writing and how he records his ideas on a small dictaphone for reference later.

The band talked about how they balance the connections between The ACB’s, Ghosty, and Shy Boys with the shows, recording process, and rehearsals.

The ACB’s have a brand new video for your new single “Television.” The video was directed by Brook Linder (SSLYBY, Free Energy), the clip’s grainy look is inspired by the grind house cinema of the ’70s. There was a disembodied beauty to the performances.

10. Christopher Owens – “Here We Go”

[Best known as the frontman & songwriter for the band Girls, Owens was born in Miami, Florida in 1979. At the time of his birth, both his parents were members of the Children of God traveling religious community. Shortly before Owens’ birth his infant brother Steven died of pneumonia due to the reluctance of the church’s members to seek professional medical assistance. In 1981, Owens’ family left the United States to travel with the church and he lived “all over Asia” until he was ten, before traveling throughout Western Europe. Owens learned to play guitar in his early teens and would perform covers of Everly Brothers and Fleetwood Mac songs on the street. At the age of sixteen, while living in Slovenia, he left the church and followed his sister to Amarillo, Texas. Owens spent his first four years in Texas working as a nighttime shelf stocker in Albertson’s grocery store as well as in various restaurants. In 2001 he met artist and oil tycoon Stanley Marsh 3, who hired him first as a lawn mower and later as a personal assistant. After nine years in Texas, Owens moved to San Francisco, California with the intention of becoming a “famous painter”. There he met musicians Matt Fishbeck and Ariel Pink and joined their band as a touring guitarist. In 2007, Owens was inspired to form his own band and began writing songs for the first time. In September 2012, it was announced by Saint Laurent Paris (formerly Yves Saint Laurent) that Owens would be the face of their Spring/Summer campaign.]

Writer, Director, Performer, Stephanie Roberts, was the winner of the 2010 Charlotte Street Foundation’s Generative Performing Artist Award. She is Assistant Professor of Physical Theatre for the UMKC’s MFA Professional Actor Training Program. She has toured nationally and abroad, and taught and directed works for the Seattle Repertory Theatre as well Cornish College of the Arts. Her Ensemble-generated works include “Meanwhile” for UMKC’s Undergraduate Theatre Department, “Tallahassee” for KC Fringe Festival, and “Boom! An International Lost and Found Marching Band” for KC Fringe Festival, and The St. Mane in Lanesboro, MN. In 2010 she created a piece with graduate theater students called “Slammed! KC Speaks Out About the Recession,” based on interviews with Kansas Citians. She received an Inspiration Award from ArtsKC, to development of “The Mask of the Broken Heart,” a one-woman mask play which premiered at the Fishtank Performance Studio. She holds a BFA in Acting from Cornish, and an MFA in Ensemble Based Physical Theatre from Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre. Stephanie Roberts joins us today to discuss her work as writer and director of the new UMKC Theatre production, Eat This! “KC Chews on the Politics of Food,” with preview performances March 2 – 5, Opening on March 6, and continuing through March 10, in Studio 116, of the Olson Performing Arts Center, at UMKC.

Stephanie talked about how she believes that our society is in the middle of a food movement, and many people don’t realize that this movement is happening, but that this movement is very politicized.

Stephanie and other company members visited farms, elementary schools, slaughterhouses and processing plants. You interviewed urban farmers, and nutritionists who plan school lunch menus, teachers and students.

Stephanie told The KC Star that: “It’s important (to me) that it’s not journalism because we’re putting our own stamp on it,” she said. “Most of the interviews I do are at a coffee shop. A lot of the people we interview are more introverted and soft-spoken. We, as actors and theater-makers, need to bring that inner passion out.”

“And also, because it’s theater, there needs to be conflict. We used the audio recordings for inspiration for characters. So it’s not by any means an impersonation. But it’s important that we get it right so we don’t misrepresent the people we’re portraying.”

Stephanie told Bob Trussell, in the KC Star that, “We found that most people are not connected to where their food comes from, and we became curious about that,” she said. “What goes into our food? Not just the ingredients, but where did it come from? How do you eat it? Where do you buy it? Who brought it to you?”

At 10:15, Mark talks LIVE with Jimbo Mathus, who’ll be in KC on Friday, March 8, at Knuckleheads with Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. Over his 40-some years in the music business, Jimbo Mathus has played mandolin in his family band, participated in the South Memphis early punk scene with Jack Oblivion, co-founded the Squirrel Nut Zippers, and was nominated for two Grammy Awards. Jimbo also worked as a river barge deckhand and wandered the U.S. alone to get a feel for the music and people. His new album “White Buffalo” was recorded with producer Steve Earle.

Konnor Ervin, Bryan McGuire, Andrew Connor, and Kyle Rausch will talk with us about their new full length release: “Little Leaves,” from High Dive Records. Their songs have been featured on MTV’s The Inbetweeners, and on Daytrotter. The lead single, “Ocean” was released in late 2012, prompting Popmatters to declare The ACB’s as one of its “Best Hopes to Break Out in 2013.” The ACB’s play a Record Release Show, Friday, March 1, 7:00 PM, at the recordBar, 1020 Westport Rd, with Fourth Of July. The ACB’s also play Vinyl Renaissance, on West 39th Street, on Saturday, March 9, at 1:00 PM.

By day, Matt Beat is a middle school social studies teacher. By night, the multi-instrumentalist writes and records songs about Presidents. He recorded them chronologically. The final volume of recordings features: Franklin Roosevelt to George W. Bush. “The Presidents of the United States of America (Volume 3)” was just released appropriately on Feb. 18. It was produced by Matt Beat, with all music and lyrics by Matt Beat, and all recorded performances by Matt Beat.

Matt Beat formed The Electric Needle Room with his brother. The two of them have lived in separate cities for many years. They email their music back and forth in collaboration.

Matt uses his songs to help teach to 7th and 8th grade middle school students in his social studies classes.

9:20 – Interview with Patrick Alexander

Patrick Alexander is a multidisciplinary artist who incorporates collage, painting and drawing with original sound compositions, developed organically, and often exhibited as a site-specific installations. His work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, and locally at The Telephone Booth Gallery, Next Space, Fahrenheit, H&R Block Artspace, Leedy-Voulkos, to name a few. As a curator he was owner operator of Locus Solis Art Gallery, and served as Art Gallery and Theatre Director the YWCA of Greater Kansas City Kansas. Since 1997 he has operated a mobile sound system for special events and clubs and has DJ’d (under the alias Fat Sal) locally and nationally. He specializes in rare vinyl recordings of soul, funk, Dub, reggae, latin, jazz, early hip hop and dance music.

As Facilities Manager for the Charlotte Street Foundation, Pat is responsible for the day to day management, operation, and maintenance of Urban Culture Project exhibition and performance spaces and Studio Residency Program facilities. Patrick Alexander joined us by phone to discuss Urban Culture Project – Studio Residency Open Studios Weekend, March 8-9.

The Foundation through the Urban Culture Project operates 3 different gallery spaces, and also offers studios, in downtown office buildings, for visual and performing artists.

14. Alfonso Lovo – “Firebird Feathers”

[Alfonso Noel Lovo (Born August 12, 1951 in León, Nicaragua) Nicaraguan composer and guitarist. He started playing with Ricardo Palma founder of Los Rockets in 1963 and then co-founded Los Juniors, with Emilio Ortega, in 1965. Both were among the top guitar players of the Nicaragua rock movement in the 60’s. He also played with Edmundo Guerrero, a local guitar master of the Bossa Nova Brazilian jazz style. Lovo was hijacked on a Lanica airline flight out of Miami, where he almost lost his left hand due to bullet wounds. Lovo survived and later regained the use of his hand. He was one of the original exponents of Nicaraguan Latin Rock. He recorded an album, Terremoto Richter 6.3 in 1973, in New Orleans. It is a fusion of Nicaraguan-style classic Spanish guitar with New Orleans Jazz and Gospel. He collaborated in his home town with Chepito Areas, the original percussionist with Santana Band. This connected him with that band. Together they produced the Managua Earthequake Relief concert featuring Mario Moreno and ‘Cantinflas’ in October 1972. After the Nicaraguan Revolution, Lovo moved to the USA. In New Orleans, he got deeper into the Blues Guitar, influenced by New Orleans musicians and Louisiana bluesmen. In Miami, in the late 80’s he recorded the song Freedom Fighters with his band “Wolf and The Pack”. This song, is a mixture of rock and politics, earned him an invitation to perform at the White House. The Miami Herald front-paged the band, then known as Alfonso Lobo and Wolf and The Pack, which led to TV interviews with CBS, NBC, ABC and Univision. The Miami PBS channel dedicated a documentary program directed by Don Webb, to a Lovo interview and featured clips from the network coverage. In Patrick Carr’s book Sunshine States, the author titled chapter 7 ‘The King of Contra Rock’ and dedicated it to Lovo. Lovo recorded La Gigantona, originally in 1976, featuring acid Latin jazz music, with an all-star Nicaraguan band, including percussion by Areas. The Chicago-based record label The Numero Group reissued Lovo’s La Gigantona album in the fall of 2012. The reissue was sourced from a rare acetate and includes extensive liner notes on Alfonso Lovo, including historical photos of his musical background. Since its re-release, La Gigantona has been a success and Lovo has been the subject of many reviews and interviews worldwide, including praises from BBC music critic Gilles Peterson, radio, Relix Magazine, Dusted Magazine, and many more international stations, and several TV shows. La Gigantona has become a well known name, and in November 14 , it reached # 4 in Billboard, Tropical music category. A new version of Wolf and The Pack has been formed in Miami, with Latin jazz players, and new performances have been seen up to the end of 2012, of La Gigantona, considered a dormant hit record, that has been awakened by Numero Group, the reissue label from Chicago.]

[Ethiopian pianist who was introduced to Real World through his work with Ethio-fusion collective Dub Colossus. Influenced by Keith Jarrett & Herbie Hancock, he nonetheless creates his own highly unique style, experimenting with the music of his ethnic roots, American jazz, soul & r&b, Latin & classical music. Despite being in his early 20s and a recent alumnus of Addis Ababa’s Yared School of Music, he’s developed at a remarkable pace as both player and composer, and is already being heralded as one of his country’s most promising young musicians. GUZO, means “journey” in Sam’s native Amharic. Recorded partly in Addis and partly at England’s Real World Studios. Produced by Dubulah — aka Nick Page, the UK musician/producer behind TransGlobal Underground, Dub Colossus and Temple of Sound — it explores both the traditional musical history of Ethiopia and the modern Ethiojazz that has brought the country’s music to international attention. The album also ventures into bigband brass ensembles, soul and funk, and simmers with deeply impassioned piano solos that clearly mark Samuel Yirga as a major emerging talent.]

Laurel Morgan grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. A classically trained, she has been playing the violin for 25 years. Laurel graduated from the UMKC Conservatory of Music in 2005. She has also performed with the Des Moines Symphony, Quixotic fusion ensemble, Musical Theatre Heritage at the Off-Center Theatre and as a member of folk-rock band, ‘In the Pines” that won several Pitch music awards. As a composer, arranger, and musician Laurel Morgan has traveled to Germany, Austria, and throughout the United States, but is based here in Kansas City. Laurel Morgan is currently on faculty at the Cottey College department of music.

Sascha Groschang graduated from Paseo Academy of Performing Arts in 2000, UMKC Conservatory of Music in 2004, and Mannes College – The New School For Music in 2008. She had her solo recital debut at Carnegie Hall’s recital hall, Weill Hall in February 2009. Sascha has recorded or performed with Peter Gabriel, Joanna Newsom, Ashanti, Adina Menzel, Clay Walker, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. She has also worked for NBC and Rhino Records. She is currently working with Juniper String Ensemble, Saint Joesph Symphony, and is part of the faculty at Missouri Western State University. She also teaches out of her Midtown KC home studio. [NYC’s Blonde Redhead developed a reputation as Sonic Youth imitators, because their sound originally depended on the same discordant guitar points and sexless machinelike rhythms. But over the course of five albums, they’ve grown out of that heady shadow. Incorporating sinister keyboards, conventional melodic guitar lines, and a stronger grasp of songwriting (“Melody of Certain Three,” among others, is hummable), Blonde Redhead is emerging from the underground rock world with a sound that mixes dissonant alt-rock (“For the Damaged”) with space-age pop grace (“Ballad of Lemons”) and orchestral ambitions (“Loved Despite Great Faults”). Mixed louder than the usual indie release, the atmospheric lead vocals of Kazu Makino bring the imagistic lyrics to the fore. “Hated Because of Great Qualities” builds into a teetering seesaw of notes while Makino admits, “It never meant a thing. So be it,” with Godardian detachment. Definitely one of the more noteworthy bands that have slowly been growing into a diverse and formidable act. –Rob O’Connor]

Mat Shoare is a Kansas City based singer, guitarist, songwriter, record label founder. His brand new solo record,”Domestic Partnership” was officially released December 11, 2012, on Golden Sound Records. This is Mat’s second full length solo release. He also released a solo EP. Mat has released two EPs with his band The Empty Spaces, and was a member of the band Everyday/Everynight. All of the music is available at Golden Sound Records, and independent, Kansas City based record label Mat founded with his friends Jerad Tomasino and Ross Brown.

90.1 FM is a grassroots movement, a radio station created by the people in the village. 35 years ago those people created a not-for-profit, 501 (c) 3 organization called, The MidCoast Radio Project and for ten years volunteers worked to raise the funds to buy a signal, a tower, and create a physical station with studios and offices, to serve the community. In February of 1988, KKFI began broadcasting over the airwaves…

Those first radio shows were prerecorded on reel to reel tape in the basement of Tom Crane’s house on Pennsylvania Ave, and then delivered to the tower site and transmitter, where they were played. Tom Crane was there in the beginning and has played a vital role in KKFI’s development over the years. Anne Winter aka Little Orphan Annie Kansas City’s first Punk show on the airwaves.
